- 1:13so where was ancient greece located
- 1:15exactly and what was life like there
- 1:19ancient greece was found in what is now
- 1:22called south eastern europe along the
- 1:24coast of the mediterranean
- 1:26sea on the west and the aegean sea on
- 1:29the east
- 1:31right across from modern day turkey
- 1:34about eighty percent of the land was
- 1:36full of mountains which provided the
- 1:39people with natural barriers of
- 1:41protection from potential enemies
- 1:44unlike modern kingdoms or countries
- 1:46today ancient greece was not one large
- 1:49empire
- 1:50instead it was made up of various
- 1:53independent city-states including athens
- 1:58sparta
- 1:59and thebes
- 2:01even though these city-states were
- 2:03separate from each other
- 2:05and often fought or competed against
- 2:08each other
- 2:09they all spoke the same language and had
- 2:12similar cultures and customs
- 2:15much like other great civilizations
- 2:18ancient greece was divided up into time
- 2:20periods each one with its own unique
- 2:23events and contributions
- 2:26first is the archaic period which
- 2:29happened between 800 and 480 bc
- 2:33the first olympics was held during this
- 2:36time and the philosopher and writer
- 2:39homer wrote two of the most famous poems
- 2:42in the world's history
- 2:45iliad
- 2:46and
- 2:47odyssey
- 2:48and a famous mathematician and scientist
- 2:51named pythagoras was born
- 2:54we still use his pythagorean theorem in
- 2:58geometry today
- 3:00next is the classical period which
- 3:03lasted from 480 bc to
- 3:06323 bc
- 3:08the famous philosophers socrates and
- 3:12aristotle lived during this time
- 3:15alexander the great ancient greece's
- 3:18most famous leader was also born and
- 3:21eventually conquered many lands
- 3:23surrounding the greek empire after he
- 3:26became king
- 3:28and the parthenon
- 3:30which is a temple in honor of the
- 3:32goddess athena
- 3:33was built in the city-state of athens
- 3:37the parthenon still stands today and is
- 3:40the oldest ancient greek building to
- 3:42survive in modern times
- 3:45last is the hellenistic period which
- 3:48spanned from 323 bc to 146 bc
- 3:54this era marked the death of alexander
- 3:57the great and the decline of the ancient
- 4:00greek civilization
- 4:02after alexander the great died the
- 4:04ancient romans began to conquer greek
- 4:07lands
- 4:08eventually making all of ancient greece
- 4:11a part of the roman empire
- 4:14now let's explore a little bit about
- 4:16what daily life was like
- 4:19the rooms of greek homes were built
- 4:22around an open space called a courtyard
- 4:25the courtyard was the center of activity
- 4:28for most ancient greeks and included a
- 4:30well for water and an altar for
- 4:33religious worship
- 4:35children were treated differently based
- 4:37on their gender
- 4:38depending on the city-state boys were
- 4:41formally educated starting at age seven
- 4:44either at school or at home
- 4:47girls on the other hand learned
- 4:49homemaking skills like cooking or sewing
- 4:52though some were also taught to read and
- 4:54write girls in the city-state of sparta

- 5:34women typically stayed home as
- 5:37homemakers caring for children
- 5:40cooking
- 5:40sewing and doing other work inside the
- 5:43home
- 5:45unfortunately most citizens of ancient
- 5:48greece enslaved other people
- 5:50usually from lands that the empire had
- 5:53conquered
- 5:54even the poorest of greek families
- 5:57typically relied on the labor of at
- 5:59least one enslaved person
- 6:02in fact there were about as many
- 6:05enslaved people in greece as there were
- 6:08free people
- 6:10so even though the ancient greeks were
- 6:13advanced in many ways
- 6:15their practice of enslavement was not
- 6:18one of them
- 6:20now that you know all about ancient
- 6:22greece let's test your knowledge with a
- 6:24few review questions
- 6:28how many different time periods was
- 6:30ancient greece divided into
- 6:33can you name at least one of them
- 6:37three
- 6:38archaic
- 6:40classical
- 6:42hellenistic
- 6:44true or false in ancient greece only
- 6:47boys received a formal education

- 6:59the independent blank states
- 7:02found in ancient greece
- 7:06city
- 7:08fantastic work everybody
- 7:11even though ancient greece was
- 7:13eventually conquered most of western
