- 1:02hello can everybody hear us
- 1:06hello let me know if you can hear us
- 1:20well we're just gonna hope that you can
- 1:22all hear us because
- 1:25i don't see
- 1:27anyone in the chat
- 1:33hello
- 1:35how is everybody
- 1:36oh excellent you can hear me
- 1:39yeah is there a video now
- 1:42the video should have started
- 1:44we uh and i'm actually checking the chat
- 1:47today
- 1:52all right
- 1:58oh hi i'm
- 2:00oh awesome i just got a message from joe
- 2:03that
- 2:04uh you all can see us too
- 2:07so welcome to science story time with
- 2:10astra and special guest nova
- 2:14uh where we talk about horrible
- 2:17accidents which occurred during
- 2:19science experiments or
- 2:22just other just bad science choices
- 2:26earlier today
- 2:28on savvy's live stream i learned that
- 2:30there was a positive correlation
- 2:32between hair length and subscriber
- 2:35counts so just just so you all know the
- 2:37subscribers should be should be
- 2:39trickling in any any day now
- 2:42um
- 2:43so for anyone who is new to the channel
- 2:47or
- 2:47just coming in from the stream because
- 2:50you heard about me on savvy's stream
- 2:53this is bad astra where we learn about
- 2:56science with more costume changes than
- 2:58math
- 2:59i'm astra and i have a ba in physics and
- 3:03theater and a master's in mechanical
- 3:05engineering
- 3:06my wife is the smart one and she is in
- 3:09the home stretch of her phd
- 3:12in astrophysics the cute one cece is
- 3:15currently
- 3:16asleep uh
- 3:18oh hi
- 3:20this is the cute one she's cece
- 3:23uh so nova double checks a lot of my
- 3:26physics in astronomy but quote cannot be
- 3:29held accountable for anything squishy
- 3:31like chemistry or biology correct
- 3:35our main content is written by eris
- 3:38sarcastic which with occasional bouts of
- 3:41productivity
- 3:42if you like makeup tutorials
- 3:45this is completely different but you
- 3:46should subscribe anyways
- 3:50so
- 3:52uh coming up we have videos about uh the
- 3:55standard model where i answer important
- 3:58questions like which star trek character
- 4:00is which elementary particle you know
- 4:02the important parts of quantum mechanics
- 4:07and we're also going to have a video
- 4:09about evolution specifically how
- 4:11fearsome wolves became precious golden
- 4:14doodles
- 4:15hey
- 4:16hey cece you want to show off how wolfy
- 4:19you are
- 4:20yeah yeah hi
- 4:23hi everybody
- 4:26okay let's say hello
- 4:29before we get into it let's say hi to
- 4:32everybody in the chat
- 4:34okay oh paige is here hi paige pluto
- 4:38patron marcia remai is here
- 4:41hi marcia
- 4:43uh hp nick
- 4:45hi
- 4:46nice to see you in the chat i think is
- 4:48this your first time in the chat i
- 4:49haven't seen you before joe hello as
- 4:52always very good to see you patron joe
- 4:55emily chambers hi
- 4:57welcome to the chat
- 4:59uh you missed
- 5:00you missed a lot of fun this am
- 5:04um and it looks like cat benson couldn't
- 5:07stay but wanted to bring the aggressive
- 5:09by energy you
- 5:10i asked for yes i am very here for more
- 5:14aggressive buy energy thank you all
- 5:18so much for coming oh
- 5:21paige is our number one fan thank you
- 5:23paige
- 5:26oh number one fan at joe yes joe is
- 5:29definitely our number one fan that yes
- 5:31that is completely accurate
- 5:35okay
- 5:36so before we get into the story i feel
- 5:39like we should set the stage by learning
- 5:42what a particle accelerator is because
- 5:45today we are going to be talking about
- 5:49anatoly
- 5:50berkowski who stuck his head inside of a
- 5:54particle beam
- 5:56but what is a particle beam what's a
- 5:58particle accelerator what are particles
- 6:01you know how it is yes it's time to eat
- 6:03our eater science vegetables before we
- 6:05get into the fun stuff
- 6:07um
- 6:08so this is my favorite part so
- 6:11uh in order to understand fundamental
- 6:14laws of physics
- 6:15uh
- 6:17we especially particle physicists like
- 6:19to smash things together
- 6:21um so there's a joke that if you were to
- 6:24give a particle physicist a rolex
- 6:27and asked her how it worked she would
- 6:29take the rolex hurl it at the wall as
- 6:31hard as she could
- 6:33very carefully watch how it broke into
- 6:34pieces and then ask you for another one
- 6:37so
- 6:38joe asked if straight energy was okay
- 6:41straight energy is okay but only if it
- 6:45is chaotic enough to throw a rolex at a
- 6:47wall
- 6:49is that good we good
- 6:52and don't worry paige uh if
- 6:55paige the puppet if you have any uh
- 6:58questions for nova put them in the chat
- 6:59i am watching the chat and i will ask
- 7:01her for you
- 7:02great
- 7:03um
- 7:04no i love questions uh so yeah so the
- 7:07basic idea is
- 7:09we want to understand
- 7:12what we're made of the fundamental
- 7:14components of
- 7:17us of the universe and so that means
- 7:19that you basically take
- 7:21sub-atomic particles or atoms as a whole
- 7:24and you smash them into each other and
- 7:26then you see what comes out and you can
- 7:29basically
- 7:30follow the tracks of particles that come
- 7:32out of these collisions and learn things
- 7:34about how particles interact
- 7:36about what particles exist and so on you
- 7:40are basically trying to reverse engineer
- 7:44a car
- 7:46by watching a ton of car crashes
- 7:50essentially yeah
- 7:52um so how do
- 7:54uh part of
- 7:56by recreating the the circumstances or
- 7:59the conditions that were available
- 8:01around shortly after the big bang so
- 8:04early universe when things were hot
- 8:07lots of things were colliding like that
- 8:08car crash that astra mentioned
- 8:11um and so yeah in order to do that um
- 8:13you basically need to find a way to make
- 8:15particles go very very fast
- 8:18that means you need to accelerate
- 8:19particles
- 8:20uh now i actually study accelerated
- 8:22particles from space it does turn out
- 8:24that
- 8:25nature accelerates particles quite
- 8:27nicely and even more effectively than we
- 8:29can do so here on earth
- 8:31um thanks to the fact that we have big
- 8:33explosions in space like supernovae
- 8:35however the the issue with those
- 8:37particles is when they come and then
- 8:40collide
- 8:41uh with other particles in our
- 8:42atmosphere we can't just surround that
- 8:45collision point with detectors we can't
- 8:47see everything that comes out very
- 8:49effectively and so if we really want to
- 8:51do a controlled experiment and we want
- 8:53to see everything that's produced
- 8:55we need to accelerate these particles
- 8:56ourselves smash them together and then
- 8:59surround that collision point with every
- 9:02particle detector we can think of
- 9:05and that is basically where accelerators
- 9:08come into play
- 9:09so
- 9:10uh paige the puppet said that her mom
- 9:13failed physics because of a boy
- 9:15as you can probably guess i passed
- 9:18physics because of a girl
- 9:21she's very good at explaining things
- 9:23also uh s-t-s-t hello it's good to see
- 9:27you in the chat i think this is your
- 9:28first time in the chat welcome uh stst
- 9:32says such a cute doggie i assume she is
- 9:34the cutest she is she is the absolute
- 9:37cutest i assume that s-t-s-t has perfect
- 9:40taste yes because they are right about
- 9:42cece being the cutest yes
- 9:44oh we love her yes we love you
- 9:47oh and they said we're explaining things
- 9:48very well excellent
- 9:50thank you so how do you make particles
- 9:52go fast um so the basic idea is you use
- 9:55magnets um so if you have charged
- 9:58particles uh so think protons electrons
- 10:02etc
- 10:03uh in order to make them go fast
- 10:07uh you can use magnetic fields so it
- 10:09turns out that if you take a particle
- 10:12that's moving along and you place it in
- 10:14a magnetic field so basically between
- 10:16the north and south poles of a big
- 10:18magnet
- 10:19uh that particle's trajectory will curve
- 10:22and so
- 10:24there are a few different ways you can
- 10:26you know use magnetic field
- 10:27configurations to make a particle
- 10:30accelerate to change its direction but
- 10:31also to go faster
- 10:33um
- 10:34the kind of
- 10:36there are a few different
- 10:38applications or designs you can use
- 10:39depending on what
- 10:41science you want to do
- 10:43uh the simplest well not necessarily the
- 10:45simplest but the kind of easiest one to
- 10:48picture is called a linear accelerator
- 10:51or a linac um and so that's one where
- 10:53you basically put a bunch of magnets in
- 10:54a row and you accelerate particles in a
- 10:58straight line so you use a weird
- 11:00configuration of magnets to make the
- 11:01particles go like this
- 11:03and they get faster and faster and then
- 11:06you make them crash into something at
- 11:07the end of the line
- 11:09that's a fun way to do things you're
- 11:11driving a car at a wall
- 11:12yes a bunch yes a large amount of very
- 11:16small cars and uh pluto patron marcia
- 11:19rima actually asked why doesn't the
- 11:22smashing of the particles change the
- 11:25particles in such a way that you're
- 11:27looking at something different in fact
- 11:28it does so when you take a particle that
- 11:31has a lot of energy and you smash it
- 11:33into something you get different
- 11:35particles out um they're not even really
- 11:37the pieces of that particle they can be
- 11:40completely new things however
- 11:43you can learn about what particles
- 11:45you're getting out and that does tell
- 11:46you something
- 11:48about what fundamental particles exist
- 11:51how they behave how long they last
- 11:53and you can even see them forming into
- 11:55new particles so if you form some quarks
- 11:58those quarks will come together very
- 12:00very very quickly and form say a proton
- 12:04uh and so
- 12:05the way that you kind of keep track of
- 12:08everything and do all of your accounting
- 12:09to see you know what are these new
- 12:11particles how massive are they is you
- 12:14use two fundamental laws of physics
- 12:17conservation of momentum and
- 12:18conservation of energy and so the idea
- 12:21is the energy that goes in which you
- 12:23know because you built this thing is the
- 12:25energy that has to come out just
- 12:27distributed among a bunch of different
- 12:28particles and also the momentum that
- 12:31goes in so that's basically
- 12:33uh the particle mass broadly speaking
- 12:36particle mass times its velocity it's a
- 12:37little bit different when you're
- 12:39near the speed of light but broadly
- 12:41speaking
- 12:42how fast something is going
- 12:44how much mass it has so it has a
- 12:46direction to it that has to be conserved
- 12:48as well what goes in must come out and
- 12:50so you can basically use that to figure
- 12:53out
- 12:54what is coming out um and what kind of
- 12:57when you see these you know particles
- 12:58interacting with your detector you can
- 13:00use those equations to figure out what's
- 13:02missing so that's another thing is you
- 13:04can look for like missing matter
- 13:06um or something that doesn't interact in
- 13:08your detector you can use that to figure
- 13:10out
- 13:11um
- 13:13basically does all of my energy
- 13:15accounting make sense and also how
- 13:16massive are some of the particles that
- 13:18i'm getting out here yeah and
- 13:20when you think hmm this doesn't sound
- 13:24like a super accurate like you'd get a
- 13:26perfectly accurate picture every time
- 13:29that's actually correct uh for example
- 13:32when the higgs boson was discovered it
- 13:35was actually two years of data that was
- 13:39analyzed
- 13:41and there was a statistically
- 13:43significant
- 13:44likelihood
- 13:46that the higgs boson was there
- 13:48so
- 13:50this is kind of like you're smashing a
- 13:52car at a wall
- 13:53and you're taking a video of it
- 13:56but some say some of the energy gets
- 13:59turned into heat
- 14:00and you don't have an infrared camera
- 14:02that would be that missing matter
- 14:05um
- 14:06let me check the chat and then we can
- 14:08talk about the circle accelerators
- 14:10exactly uh
- 14:12so paige says mama's eldest son did a
- 14:15science fair project on electromagnets
- 14:17in grade one that's awesome awesome that
- 14:20sounds like an awesome experiment yeah
- 14:22uh stst says i used to believe the earth
- 14:25is flat i now fight conspiracy i'm
- 14:27trying to learn proper science i'd love
- 14:29to have you guys on for a chat sometime
- 14:32that sounds like a lot of fun uh we are
- 14:34to
- 14:35uh i think rachel oates called me an
- 14:37official science person and just made my
- 14:40week one time uh so we are two official
- 14:43science people we would love to come on
- 14:46and talk science uh we love science and
- 14:49we try to uh make it accessible for
- 14:51everyone because i think that's a thing
- 14:53that scientists need to do better
- 14:56um
- 14:58okay
- 15:02it was a huge misunderstanding of
- 15:04science mixed with thinking i was more
- 15:06intelligent than i am
- 15:08uh thinking you were more intelligent
- 15:09than you am than you are is
- 15:12actually um an effect of science it's
- 15:14called the dunning-kruger effect um so
- 15:17it is actually completely natural for
- 15:20humans without a huge amount of
- 15:22expertise on a topic to think uh they
- 15:25know more about it than they do everyone
- 15:27does it like it's a mess less you know
- 15:29about something the more you'll think
- 15:31you know about it that is not your fault
- 15:34uh it's not anyone's fault it's just a
- 15:36thing that exists uh and stst i'm really
- 15:39glad
- 15:40you are doing the work to learn i think
- 15:44that's awesome yeah it's also why
- 15:46getting a phd can be very demoralizing
- 15:49yeah uh because there is the reverse of
- 15:51the dunning-kruger effect called
- 15:53imposter syndrome which is basically the
- 15:55more you know about something the more
- 15:56you realize how little you know and then
- 15:59you just panic because you don't know
- 16:00anything
- 16:02and uh
- 16:03yeah getting a phd is is that process
- 16:07um
- 16:08yes so
- 16:10let's talk about
- 16:12uh this is a picture of fermilab i did
- 16:15want to mention one more thing you did
- 16:16make a very good point earlier on though
- 16:18when you were talking about
- 16:19uh multiple collisions and how you crash
- 16:22the car multiple times or again the the
- 16:24joke with the rolex it would take a
- 16:26whole lot of rolexes
- 16:28like billions of rolexes
- 16:30um before we would actually find out how
- 16:32it works so the idea is you get slightly
- 16:34different things out of each collision
- 16:36every time but you can see
- 16:38what happens most of the time so
- 16:41statistically most of the time you seem
- 16:43to get
- 16:44kind of a lot of particles in this one
- 16:47mass range you get this like bump at you
- 16:49know
- 16:50this this many giga electron volts
- 16:53um
- 16:54and so
- 16:56if that's the case
- 16:58uh
- 16:58then maybe you have a particle at that
- 17:01mass i should also mention gig electron
- 17:03volt is a is a unit of energy but mass
- 17:05and energy are kind of the same thing
- 17:07ish they're very closely related because
- 17:09mass can be converted to energy by e
- 17:10equals m c squared side note anyway
- 17:14did you just say
- 17:16mass and energy being the same will come
- 17:18up a lot in
- 17:20uh
- 17:21our quantum mechanics video which is
- 17:23coming out very soon if you want to
- 17:25learn more about particle physics that
- 17:27video is coming out um eris is writing
- 17:30it and eris has never studied particle
- 17:32physics uh so the science will be
- 17:35accurate but it will definitely be
- 17:37accessible
- 17:38to
- 17:39like someone without a science
- 17:41background and there will be a lot of
- 17:42star trek in it so yeah
- 17:44um no that'll be exciting anyway uh so
- 17:49uh astra has very kindly brought up this
- 17:52picture of the tevatron at cern
- 17:56uh so so far i've mentioned linux or
- 17:58linear accelerators so this kind of
- 18:00simple idea where you accelerate
- 18:01particles in a straight line and then
- 18:03you basically take that beam of
- 18:06particles and you dump it into a fixed
- 18:08target
- 18:09now if you want to get to even higher
- 18:10energies
- 18:12you can instead of accelerating
- 18:14particles in a straight line where you
- 18:15only get one shot to accelerate them
- 18:18accelerate them in a ring so here
- 18:20instead of having that one opportunity
- 18:23to get them up to speed you can have
- 18:26them go around and around and around and
- 18:29around and again you just confine them
- 18:31to that rim using magnets so the
- 18:34stronger your magnets
- 18:36the easier it is to confine particles or
- 18:39equivalently the faster the particles
- 18:41can go before they just fly off the
- 18:44track
- 18:45so
- 18:45if you want to get to really really high
- 18:47energies you want strong magnets the
- 18:49other thing you can do is you can make
- 18:51your ring bigger so the bigger the ring
- 18:54the less you need to make those
- 18:56particles curve
- 18:57and so that means that you can actually
- 19:00use weaker magnets but keep going around
- 19:03and around and around and they'll
- 19:05eventually get up to just as high of an
- 19:07energy
- 19:08um that is why uh bigger rings like
- 19:12bigger
- 19:13uh
- 19:14super colliders tend to have more energy
- 19:18because there's only so strong we can
- 19:19make magnets and keep them effective
- 19:21yeah and so yeah this uh what jordan is
- 19:24showing this is called the tevatron
- 19:26um it was used for many years at
- 19:30fermilab um it was responsible f for
- 19:33discovering i believe you the top or the
- 19:35bottom cork um possibly both
- 19:38uh so it has found some particles that
- 19:41are part of our standard model of
- 19:43particle physics kind of the fundamental
- 19:46um understanding of how
- 19:48of what we're made up of uh jordan will
- 19:50have a lovely video coming up on this
- 19:53soon
- 19:54astra
- 19:55astra sorry
- 19:57she is my wife
- 19:59i don't call her astra we use our online
- 20:02names here we do we do yeah um
- 20:06yeah i don't know who jordan is um
- 20:11we play caricatures of ourselves uh so i
- 20:14like to use fake names to remind people
- 20:16that this is not my actual personality
- 20:19it's okay it's a live stream it is kind
- 20:20of your personality um
- 20:22it's a caricature anyway
- 20:25um
- 20:26my bad
- 20:28uh so you send these particles around
- 20:31and around and around you basically
- 20:33try to build the biggest ring you can
- 20:35with the strongest magnets you can get
- 20:37your hands on uh which nowadays means uh
- 20:41super conducting magnets electromagnets
- 20:44and the idea is you can make a magnet
- 20:46using an electric current
- 20:48um and if the material that your
- 20:51electric current is in happens to be a
- 20:53superconductor that means that there's
- 20:55like no resistance like actually no
- 20:58resistance whatsoever in that material
- 21:00so you can get a really really high
- 21:02current lots of electricity in this
- 21:04thing that makes a really strong
- 21:05magnetic field and that is a really
- 21:07really good guide to force that beam of
- 21:10particles around your circle and to keep
- 21:12accelerating
- 21:15so with all of that
- 21:17the cool thing about the tevatron and
- 21:19other synchrotrons that's what we call
- 21:21these circular particle accelerators is
- 21:24you can also
- 21:25while you have
- 21:26one proton going around this way you can
- 21:30send an anti-proton going around the
- 21:32other way
- 21:33let's do it let's let's collide
- 21:37we tried
- 21:39and that way you get even more energy
- 21:42out of your collision because you want
- 21:43to you want a big big collision because
- 21:45now you have a head-on collision as
- 21:47opposed to just hitting a wall
- 21:49and so you know it's it's worse to hit a
- 21:51car head-on like it's worse to hit
- 21:53oncoming traffic than a wall
- 21:55um more energy
- 21:57not a good thing in a car crash great
- 21:58thing if you want to do particle vision
- 22:00please do not try this at home i promise
- 22:03we aren't lying to you please do not
- 22:06test by ramming your car into oncoming
- 22:09traffic or walls so the tevatron so this
- 22:12is at fermilab which is located in
- 22:14batavia illinois near-ish to chicago um
- 22:17but west uh this was the
- 22:19state-of-the-art
- 22:20biggest particle accelerator in the
- 22:22world for many years
- 22:24until it was overtaken
- 22:26uh
- 22:27by the large hadron collider at cern so
- 22:30this is a picture
- 22:32not of the whole accelerator you can't
- 22:33actually see
- 22:35any of the rings from above ground
- 22:38because everything is below ground but
- 22:39this is one of the detectors so this is
- 22:42a collision point and so particles would
- 22:46when this thing is all closed down
- 22:48be shooting through like toward you or
- 22:51away from you in that little circle part
- 22:53in the center and that's where the
- 22:55collision would happen and then all of
- 22:57that crap around it those are all
- 22:59detectors to the
- 23:01measure yeah take pictures of the
- 23:03particles coming out
- 23:05um so this is even bigger than the
- 23:08tavatron the large pattern collider lhc
- 23:11and it is still to this day the state of
- 23:13the art this is what found the higgs
- 23:16it's very famous
- 23:18and you can go sometimes see
- 23:22the detectors if you're lucky
- 23:25uh and they're not actually running
- 23:27experiments uh but unfortunately when i
- 23:29was there i didn't i only got to get to
- 23:32the opposite side of a six foot thick
- 23:34cement wall
- 23:36on the other side of one of those
- 23:38detectors
- 23:40this brings us to a little humble brag
- 23:43of novas she has actually interned at
- 23:46both fermilab
- 23:48and at the large hadron collider at cern
- 23:52um oh and beach eight uh says they live
- 23:5620 minutes from rhic
- 23:59um
- 24:00do you know where that is
- 24:01no where is that
- 24:04i don't know
- 24:05but that's awesome
- 24:07yeah that
- 24:09that's awesome
- 24:10uh so
- 24:11i thought it might be fun to take a
- 24:13little break from science
- 24:16uh because
- 24:18while nova was interning at cern
- 24:21uh i came and visited her as her friend
- 24:25this was
- 24:26months before we started dating uh but
- 24:28we had already been living together for
- 24:30one of her favorite stories to tell so
- 24:32now the whole internet gets the
- 24:34privilege
- 24:35i
- 24:36uh so fun thing about being a theater
- 24:38major there are often assignments where
- 24:40you have to perform
- 24:42sections of like
- 24:44work you've written and i am lazy so i
- 24:47would just take pieces of my diary clean
- 24:50it up a little and turn it into a
- 24:52performance piece because i am chaotic
- 24:55enough to not have any boundaries
- 24:58uh so this is
- 25:00a slightly modified version of a diary
- 25:04entry i made
- 25:07that i have not looked at since senior
- 25:09year of college
- 25:10so i'm just gonna read it and see what
- 25:12happens okay i'm just gonna i'm just
- 25:14gonna
- 25:15you're just gonna crack down and cringe
- 25:19i'm going to marry my best friend my
- 25:22future wife says she's straight but hear
- 25:23me out hear me out
- 25:25she's already my roommate but i'm in
- 25:27love with her and she's brilliant like
- 25:29interning at cern brilliant i'm
- 25:31researching in munich right now but i'm
- 25:33visiting her this weekend and i'm
- 25:35touring cern
- 25:36my future wife's lazy not with school
- 25:39work but with little things like getting
- 25:40wine for herself or filling out
- 25:42paperwork so i always pour her wine and
- 25:45break into international research
- 25:46facilities when she doesn't fill out the
- 25:48visitor form
- 25:50okay i'm gonna take a break from my
- 25:51diary and as someone who now has to deal
- 25:54with those visitor forms
- 25:56i hate who i was
- 25:59she gets me in through the side entrance
- 26:01on a sunday since security apparently
- 26:03takes sunday off she asks if i want to
- 26:05see the off-limits underground tunnels
- 26:08the off-limits underground tunnels of
- 26:09the large hadron collider that
- 26:11represents the forefront of particle
- 26:12physics research
- 26:14wedding bells
- 26:17so we find an unlocked door into the
- 26:19maintenance tunnels and explore
- 26:21around us is the history of particle
- 26:24physicists engineers and interns past as
- 26:28well as an array of empty beer bottles
- 26:30and physics-related graffiti i feel like
- 26:32i could get lost in all of this science
- 26:34and
- 26:36we are very lost
- 26:39stairs we find an exit unfortunately
- 26:42after climbing out of the tunnels my
- 26:44bestie realizes where we are
- 26:47the main entrance the one with the
- 26:49guards
- 26:50even on sunday
- 26:52we get calm
- 26:54prep our story and
- 26:58pull
- 27:01locked
- 27:02tunnel entrance
- 27:05locked behind us
- 27:07who locks a building from the inside
- 27:09we are trapped inside the main building
- 27:12of an international research facility
- 27:14that we illegally broke into
- 27:20so my future wife is hyperventilating
- 27:22and i know i'm supposed to be supportive
- 27:25and all but i can't stand i'm laughing
- 27:27so hard because now
- 27:29we have to get the guard's attention and
- 27:31explain why and how we got trapped
- 27:34inside this secure facility
- 27:37which frankly is more embarrassing for
- 27:40them than for us
- 27:42my future wife's worried she'll lose her
- 27:44job and be sent home
- 27:45really
- 27:46they'll probably throw both of us in
- 27:48prison
- 27:49that's what he said to me in retrospect
- 27:52was not the supportive wifey thing to
- 27:55say
- 27:58so i start banging on the front door and
- 28:00calling out hello
- 28:03anyone
- 28:04maybe they'll deport me that's a good
- 28:06backup plan in case i miss my train back
- 28:08to munich
- 28:14five minutes wow these are some
- 28:16incompetent guards
- 28:18they still haven't noticed us
- 28:21our terrorist asses could have wreaked
- 28:24all kinds of havoc if we were so
- 28:26inclined
- 28:27in the visitor center hey hey wanna
- 28:30reset all the computers to play the
- 28:32northwestern fight song when people log
- 28:34in
- 28:36we need to get out of here right right
- 28:38okay
- 28:40half an hour until my train
- 28:42can't you just call someone
- 28:45my brilliant bestie finally realizes she
- 28:49can group message all 600 summer interns
- 28:52they have a group chat
- 28:54way to perform under pressure
- 28:56i'm gonna miss my train
- 28:58i was panicking
- 29:00within minutes of this message there is
- 29:03someone on his way to let us back into
- 29:06the tunnels
- 29:09he arrives our night in shining michigan
- 29:12t-shirt
- 29:13and my totally straight bestie
- 29:16offers to buy him his choice of
- 29:18alcoholic beverage for rescuing her
- 29:21he's more in a dinner mood
- 29:24he's tall cute saving us her age and one
- 29:28of the smartest physicists in the world
- 29:32it's wifey's time to shine
- 29:34holding hands kissing in the rain
- 29:36offering him ten pranks and telling him
- 29:38to buy whatever he wants and keep the
- 29:41change
- 29:43he had a girlfriend and i didn't have
- 29:45time on another continent i did not have
- 29:48time for dinner and he had a girlfriend
- 29:52on another continent i'm not a
- 29:54homewrecker
- 29:56we just got broken out of being tried as
- 29:59international spies and or terrorists
- 30:01and she can't even get a date out of it
- 30:05so much for competition i'm gonna marry
- 30:07my best friend
- 30:10that by the way was completely like
- 30:13edited and performed to my acting class
- 30:15and no one else
- 30:18months before we started dating
- 30:23joe h commented fermi was here yeah it's
- 30:25it's pretty much that level like there
- 30:28are there were a lot of acronyms
- 30:30a lot of like
- 30:32loss we never made well i made it but
- 30:35you never actually got to make it to the
- 30:36summer student shrine
- 30:38we got lost yes the stuff well the
- 30:40summer student try and you had to go
- 30:42aways uh
- 30:44you had to you know cross well into
- 30:45france before you got there
- 30:47uh and go down a few floors yeah okay
- 30:50but there was a
- 30:54bunch of yeah physics equations graffiti
- 30:57down the walls in the shrine so than
- 31:00everywhere else nerds and
- 31:02it had since been drunk by the time i
- 31:04got there but
- 31:06um a little
- 31:07buried box
- 31:09that had a bottle of champagne that was
- 31:12only to be opened once the higgs was
- 31:14discovered by the time i got there the
- 31:16things had been discovered the bottle
- 31:18was empty
- 31:25eris commented and i'm the chaotic
- 31:27criminal sure jan
- 31:29yeah this
- 31:31we definitely do some chaotic crimes
- 31:33yeah i i spent a lot of my undergrad on
- 31:37roofs of various buildings i just do a
- 31:39lot of chaotic crimes this was my one
- 31:41yeah i brought you along to some roofs
- 31:43yeah i didn't really like it
- 31:46i was more there out of a sense of
- 31:47obligation
- 31:49emily chambers i can't with y'all yep
- 31:52yep this is the chaotic bi energy you
- 31:54came for
- 31:56uh
- 31:59didn't know about the diary entry
- 32:02but i think i've told you that story
- 32:06um okay
- 32:09so we should probably get back to
- 32:10science at some point well i can
- 32:12transition um by mentioning that through
- 32:16all of this while we were in maintenance
- 32:17tunnels we were never in i should show
- 32:21you by the tunnel i mean the tunnel that
- 32:23actually has
- 32:25the accelerator that thing um so that's
- 32:28where the particle beam actually is
- 32:30those
- 32:31um sections that you're seeing many of
- 32:33them are actual superconducting magnets
- 32:36electromagnets
- 32:38uh
- 32:39going into that tunnel is very off
- 32:41limits
- 32:43no undergraduate is going to sneak into
- 32:45that tunnel
- 32:46uh
- 32:47when diplomats
- 32:49arrive at cern they get to see the
- 32:51detectors they do not get to see
- 32:54the tunnel the tunnel is
- 32:56for
- 32:57maintenance crews only
- 33:00and only when
- 33:01nothing is up and running so
- 33:04uh it seems like the reason they might
- 33:07make this off limits is one because it's
- 33:09fragile and you don't want to break it
- 33:10but two because it's very dangerous now
- 33:13why would a particle beam be dangerous
- 33:17nova
- 33:18radiation
- 33:20so
- 33:21energetic particles
- 33:23when you are exposed to them
- 33:25can blast teeny tiny holes in your body
- 33:29that's not good
- 33:30that leads to
- 33:32acute radiation sickness which is very
- 33:34ugly it leads to cancer all sorts of
- 33:37things you do not want to be exposed to
- 33:38this fortunately
- 33:40once you shut down an accelerator it
- 33:44takes very little time for the radiation
- 33:46to clear and pretty soon after people
- 33:50can actually go into the tunnels and
- 33:52it's totally safe people do wear
- 33:54dissimitors to keep track of their
- 33:56exposure just in case something goes
- 33:58wrong but it is a very safe environment
- 34:02however
- 34:03while the particle beam is on you do not
- 34:05want to be near it you do not want to be
- 34:07in those tunnels certainly at a facility
- 34:09like this you do not want to be around
- 34:10the detectors and that is why the
- 34:12closest that i ever got to get
- 34:15to
- 34:16the cms detector which is one of these
- 34:18big detectors that we showed you at cern
- 34:22was the opposite side of a six foot
- 34:23thick cement wall because when i was at
- 34:26cern the lhc was actually running so
- 34:30remember that
- 34:32nova is just talking about the radiation
- 34:34you can get from being
- 34:36near the particle beam now
- 34:39pre on our previous live stream when we
- 34:41talked about the demon core
- 34:43nova mentioned that radiation is like
- 34:46tiny bullets well a particle beam
- 34:49is a whole bunch
- 34:51of those tiny bullets going very
- 34:53very
- 34:55fast
- 34:57so
- 35:00that brings us
- 35:03to our main story
- 35:15it's the 1970s the soviet union and the
- 35:18united states have a
- 35:20tense relationship one might even say
- 35:23cold
- 35:25uh science is super secretive since
- 35:28scientific research isn't shared a ton
- 35:31of scientific breakthroughs are actually
- 35:33happening in parallel like one paper
- 35:36gets cited from the west and another
- 35:38from the east for the exact same finding
- 35:41for a lot of these things like
- 35:44scientists were not collaborating they
- 35:46were hiding their work from
- 35:48like the other side publishing in
- 35:50separate journals
- 35:52it was like
- 35:54it
- 35:56with basically humanity discovered a
- 35:58bunch of things twice because of this
- 36:02however
- 36:03like that was the downside for science
- 36:05now the upside physics is funded all
- 36:09day
- 36:11both sides in the cold war uh the soviet
- 36:14union and the west want an edge the us
- 36:18and soviet governments are pumping an
- 36:20incredible
- 36:22amount of money into new research
- 36:25yes we should say goodbye to eris by the
- 36:27way oh bye bye eris thank you
- 36:30so much for coming it was good
- 36:33uh to see you thank you i'll see you
- 36:36again probably tomorrow
- 36:37we work together
- 36:39um
- 36:40so back to the cold war yes
- 36:43we are all living in fear of nuclear
- 36:45annihilation
- 36:47but
- 36:48it's a great time for grant money and
- 36:50all as we all know the four fundamental
- 36:53forces are dwarfed
- 36:55by the one true force of academia which
- 36:58is grant approvals
- 37:01it's true
- 37:03so there were very
- 37:05very few downsides to the cold war
- 37:08ending like the cold war ending
- 37:10overall good thing
- 37:13but one of the downsides was that
- 37:16funding dried up for a lot of these uh
- 37:19cool experiments and loads of ambitious
- 37:22science projects were cancelled or put
- 37:25on hold and uh side note
- 37:27uh i've just got to say this like as an
- 37:30american science person
- 37:33uh one of those projects that was put on
- 37:35hold
- 37:36was a super collider
- 37:39far bigger than the lhc or cern and it
- 37:43was going to be in texas it was called
- 37:46the super conducting super collider
- 37:49and
- 37:50it was it okay it was over budget it did
- 37:55initially have a budget of 2 billion
- 37:57that then ballooned to 11 billion and
- 38:00other countries were going to come help
- 38:02fund it but then after the cold war
- 38:04ended and the budget ballooned they were
- 38:07like
- 38:08nah maybe don't want to put a ton of
- 38:10money into this like really ambitious
- 38:12basic science experiment
- 38:14um
- 38:15so that was messy they broke ground and
- 38:17everything yeah no they were 20
- 38:20done with construction this uh photo in
- 38:22the background is actually of
- 38:26construction on the super conducting
- 38:28super collider
- 38:29like this the tunnels are still there
- 38:32like
- 38:34construction equipment was brought in
- 38:35they spent two billion dollars on this
- 38:38before like and they flew in a bunch of
- 38:40scientists like dozens of top of their
- 38:43game top field scientists moved to
- 38:47like
- 38:49this uh
- 38:51waxahachie
- 38:53texas
- 38:54that might be how it's pronounced who
- 38:56knows i would know it if funding hadn't
- 38:58dried up because there'd be a super
- 39:00collider there bigger than cern
- 39:02um and all of those
- 39:04and all of those physicists moved down
- 39:06there many did move away once the
- 39:08project was canceled years later now i'm
- 39:10not actually sure that they would have
- 39:12gotten energies much higher than what
- 39:15they got at cern because while it was
- 39:16bigger
- 39:17magnet technology did improve between
- 39:20the design of the superconducting super
- 39:22collider you can always replace magnets
- 39:25yeah but it can be tricky
- 39:27they're expensive
- 39:29okay the head physicist was of this
- 39:32project the superconducting super
- 39:33collider was talking all kinds of shade
- 39:36in a couple of the articles i read uh
- 39:38specifically one for dallas news
- 39:41where he was all like we would have
- 39:43discovered the higgs boson first
- 39:46but con
- 39:47but congress cut our funding
- 39:50he's messy he's so messy but he's trying
- 39:52to the nobel goes to the theorists
- 39:54anyways so hey
- 39:57she's a theorist there's just a little
- 39:59in humor for the theorists here
- 40:02so
- 40:03uh possibly oh and i have to admit um i
- 40:07always admit when i am wrong
- 40:10uh
- 40:11and
- 40:12i have said that there was nothing good
- 40:15about president reagan i have said that
- 40:17before
- 40:18and unfortunately while researching for
- 40:19this video i did find one good thing
- 40:22about ronald reagan
- 40:25uh and that was that he
- 40:28was just guns hoe balls gung-ho balls to
- 40:32the wall for funding this project no
- 40:34matter how much money the scientists
- 40:36spent
- 40:37um and when clinton was elected he
- 40:40showed very little interest and as other
- 40:43countries were also less motivated there
- 40:44was no longer this like big exciting
- 40:47push uh that the scientists had under
- 40:49reagan and congress voted to end the
- 40:52project
- 40:53after already spending 2 billion of the
- 40:56initial 4 billion
- 40:58um
- 40:59anyway we should fund science like we
- 41:01did in the cold war i don't want to go
- 41:03back to war
- 41:04like i really don't like i'm actually
- 41:06very very terrified right now as we kind
- 41:10of all are
- 41:11um
- 41:12like the situation is really
- 41:14really bad
- 41:16um
- 41:17but i wrote the outline for this before
- 41:19that situation arose and i just want
- 41:21more funding for science please thank
- 41:23you really we just need to fund things
- 41:25on longer time horizons yeah the the
- 41:28issue is that
- 41:31turnover
- 41:32within the organizations that fund so
- 41:36congress is
- 41:37at best every six years yeah so what
- 41:41that means
- 41:42is a lot of these projects which take
- 41:45decades to kind of conceptualize and
- 41:48build
- 41:49are very hard to fund and to keep being
- 41:51funded what will happen is money gets
- 41:54allocated and then budgets get cut or
- 41:57money that was allocated is not
- 42:00allocated through a long enough term and
- 42:02then it can get removed you end up with
- 42:04these half-finished projects
- 42:06like assuming conducting superflare um
- 42:09and it just means that we need a longer
- 42:11time horizon the europe actually does
- 42:12this a lot yeah beach eight
- 42:15asked a question for nova
- 42:18can the strength of the magnetic field
- 42:21while the lhc is running mess with you
- 42:25so
- 42:26when you say if you were standing right
- 42:28next to it
- 42:29yes
- 42:30but you would have bigger problems
- 42:32specifically
- 42:34the bigger problem that is the radiation
- 42:36um
- 42:37it's probably not going to mess with you
- 42:41if you are at you know minimum safe
- 42:43distance um while this thing is running
- 42:46uh it's not like you have to you know
- 42:48take off all metal to be on the opposite
- 42:50side of the six foot
- 42:52thick wall um it's not like getting you
- 42:54know going into the same room as an mri
- 42:56if you were in there absolutely that's
- 42:58those are very very strong magnets
- 43:01um the a fun thing that can happen with
- 43:03these magnets um and i love talking
- 43:06about quenching um there's this thing
- 43:08that can happen called a quench and so
- 43:10this is the quenchiest it's the
- 43:12quenchiest this is not an issue for mris
- 43:16or anything like that mris don't rely on
- 43:19superconductors to get the magnetic
- 43:20field strength that they need let's go
- 43:22back to cern
- 43:24yeah we're talking about cern yeah um
- 43:26this is true for fermilab too though um
- 43:29so anytime you have super conducting
- 43:31magnets though this is a concern
- 43:33um and basically what this is is
- 43:37well how does a superconductor work it's
- 43:39a material
- 43:41that has zero resistance to electrical
- 43:44current so that means that
- 43:47current can just go around and around
- 43:49and
- 43:50no energy gets dissipated as heat
- 43:53which is really cool
- 43:55however
- 43:56the issue with superconducting is that
- 44:00materials do not superconduct at room
- 44:02temperature
- 44:03they tend to superconduct at very very
- 44:05cold temperatures like very close to
- 44:07absolute zero
- 44:09and so
- 44:10fun fact cern is actually one of the
- 44:14biggest users of helium in the world
- 44:17and that is because
- 44:19they use liquid helium to cool their
- 44:22magnets
- 44:24that's great so you use liquid helium
- 44:27which is even colder than liquid
- 44:28nitrogen
- 44:29get these things really cold and then
- 44:32you can put
- 44:33massive amounts of electrical current
- 44:36through these magnets that creates
- 44:38really strong magnetic fields
- 44:39accelerates your particles nice and nice
- 44:41and good
- 44:42uh so what happens when it goes wrong
- 44:44what can go wrong is say something goes
- 44:47wrong with your cooling
- 44:48say you know you have a leak of in one
- 44:51of your cooling tubes somehow your
- 44:53temperature is starting to rise
- 44:56this happens sometimes things go wrong
- 44:59well if that happens
- 45:01now
- 45:03suddenly
- 45:04you get to this threshold temperature
- 45:06where your superconducting magnet is no
- 45:09longer superconducting it's just regular
- 45:11old conducting
- 45:13and regular old conducting means that
- 45:15that current that used to be able to go
- 45:17through without dissipating any energy
- 45:19as heat well now it is dissipating
- 45:22energy as heat and there is a lot of
- 45:24energy to be dissipated as heat and so
- 45:27that means that suddenly your very very
- 45:29cold magnet gets very very hot
- 45:34very very quickly
- 45:35liquid helium tanks can explode
- 45:38uh you can have all sorts of crazy
- 45:41problems because basically all of your
- 45:42cooling stuff immediately gets heated up
- 45:44boils and kapoor
- 45:47and so in order to
- 45:50deal with quenches
- 45:52uh modern colliders all have some sort
- 45:55of system where they basically can take
- 45:57that current and in case of an emergency
- 46:00take all that current and offload it as
- 46:03quickly as possible so if you go and you
- 46:05visit
- 46:06um for example the lhc you will see that
- 46:09they have these
- 46:11giants so i'm talking
- 46:13uh you know yay big around
- 46:17and then maybe 50 of them all put
- 46:20together copper
- 46:22pipe things they're rectangular which is
- 46:24why i made this shape
- 46:26now the thicker your your wire is the
- 46:30more current it can take so like a
- 46:32heavier gauge of wire can handle more
- 46:34current
- 46:35that's why like the plug on your
- 46:37air conditioner is usually has a thicker
- 46:39cord than the the plug on your iphone
- 46:43yeah or just small electrical appliances
- 46:45so
- 46:46you have now you know this is your wire
- 46:48size and you have about 50 of them
- 46:52all designed to carry that current out
- 46:56and dump it
- 46:57outside the building
- 46:59and so it gets dumped outside the
- 47:00building and apparently if a quench
- 47:02happens and you are standing
- 47:04in this uh region which is probably
- 47:07about the size of a living room outside
- 47:10where they dump all that heat you can
- 47:13feel the ambient temperature rise by a
- 47:15few degrees immediately
- 47:17it gets that hot
- 47:19so that's what happens in a quench
- 47:21the other thing is again you can
- 47:22sometimes if you aren't able to get all
- 47:24the current out fast enough get these uh
- 47:26steam explosions uh which is not good to
- 47:29have near your detectors yes usually
- 47:32it's not going to blow out your detector
- 47:33usually it happens somewhere along the
- 47:35ring
- 47:36uh it's still not good
- 47:38um
- 47:40but what it does is it will destroy the
- 47:43magnet typically that was at fault but
- 47:46you're usually able to isolate it to
- 47:49that one system because of
- 47:52this
- 47:53um
- 47:55capability to get rid of that extra
- 47:56currency you end up with like an
- 47:58explosion that destroys one very
- 48:00expensive magnet as opposed to
- 48:02triggering this cascade effect that
- 48:05destroys destroys the whole thing yeah
- 48:08um so this happens this has happened at
- 48:10fermilab apparently i talked to people
- 48:13um who worked there back when it was
- 48:15running and once in a while a quench
- 48:17would happen and you could hear it all
- 48:19across the lab this big boom and when i
- 48:21say all across the lab i mean
- 48:24all across
- 48:26this uh nine square mile prairie land
- 48:29which is what fermilab is
- 48:31they haven't heard of bison
- 48:32they do formula is a weird place it's
- 48:34very cool i highly recommend a visit if
- 48:37you are in the area yeah totally worth
- 48:38it okay and it's open to the public
- 48:40shall we get back to science yeah or to
- 48:42the story yes um the only thing i was
- 48:45gonna say about the other famous quench
- 48:47was the one that happened at cern
- 48:49uh
- 48:50not too many years ago
- 48:52it was the frenchest thing to ever
- 48:54french uh the they had a quench
- 48:57it knocked out the lhc for some time
- 48:59because they destroyed a magnet
- 49:01i think they might have even destroyed a
- 49:03few magnets the thing that caused it
- 49:05was they lost power to part of their
- 49:07cooling system because a bird dropped a
- 49:10baguette on a power line
- 49:13there are stories about this in
- 49:14reputable newspapers
- 49:16that's the frenchish thing to ever
- 49:18friends yeah yeah
- 49:19anyway that's it that's crunches
- 49:22okay
- 49:24so
- 49:27let's talk about
- 49:33sorry okay let's talk about uh
- 49:36our
- 49:37main character
- 49:39anatoly petrovich berkowski
- 49:42so
- 49:43we're back in the middle of the cold war
- 49:45it's 1978 in the soviet union meet
- 49:49anatoly petrovich burkowski uh he's the
- 49:53guy leaning over that's not really him i
- 49:56couldn't find any pictures of this young
- 49:59man
- 49:59so uh just
- 50:01but that's like it's that is where he
- 50:04worked and that's what he was doing
- 50:06uh
- 50:08so he was born in 1942
- 50:11at the time he is a 36 year old
- 50:14researcher working on his phd at the
- 50:17institute for high energy physics in
- 50:19protovino russia
- 50:22our friend anatoly has a really exciting
- 50:25job he's working for the u70
- 50:29synchrotron the largest particle
- 50:31accelerator in the soviet union um so it
- 50:35was the competitor to fermilab
- 50:38um
- 50:39and
- 50:40did pretty well it was named the u70
- 50:44because its final energy was 70
- 50:49uh giga electron volts which is 10
- 50:51billion electron volts it's just a lot a
- 50:54lot of energy at the time it was the
- 50:57world revolution electron yes sorry
- 51:0070 billion electron volts right
- 51:0470 gigabytes
- 51:06uh
- 51:06electron volts that's smaller than a
- 51:08okay anyway
- 51:1070 billion electron volts
- 51:14you don't need to know what that's a
- 51:15single particle it's measure of energy
- 51:17you just need to know that that was the
- 51:19world record in beam energy
- 51:22when it was built it's small potatoes
- 51:24now based on like cern but at the time
- 51:28it was huge but i can i can interrupt to
- 51:30give you a slight sense of scale so that
- 51:32was 70 giga electron volts was the
- 51:34energy in that collision
- 51:36um now
- 51:38the tevatron which was
- 51:40uh fermilabs
- 51:42well it was able to accelerate particles
- 51:44up to a tev
- 51:46hence the name tevatron
- 51:49that is a terra electron volt so that is
- 51:51a trillion electron volts as opposed to
- 51:5370 billion
- 51:57bigger is better
- 52:01you're just coming in with the fermi lab
- 52:03and cern pride here yeah yeah yeah well
- 52:06cern is 14 ted freaking 14 trillion
- 52:09electron volts yeah
- 52:14west
- 52:16um and so like anyway at the time
- 52:20the u-70 synchrotron was the biggest and
- 52:23best
- 52:24um in the world um and it was a big big
- 52:29deal in the soviet union actually in
- 52:311970 uh the u-70 scientists team was
- 52:35awarded the lenin prize which was one of
- 52:38the most prestigious awards of the
- 52:39soviet union for accomplishments in
- 52:41science literature arts architecture
- 52:43technology think like the soviet nobel
- 52:47um they won this for the development and
- 52:50commissioning of the centro tron
- 52:52and the u-70 is still the highest energy
- 52:57accelerator in
- 52:58russia uh
- 53:00we have fermilab
- 53:02just saying
- 53:03uh
- 53:04now the temp trend doesn't operate
- 53:06anymore because
- 53:08the lhc is bigger yeah we have cern yeah
- 53:11china we're not really in we're not part
- 53:14of concern so
- 53:16yeah so unfortunately for
- 53:19bogorski our main character uh our
- 53:22friend
- 53:23he is the main character in one of these
- 53:25live streams so things really can't end
- 53:28well for him
- 53:29there's kind of a rule
- 53:31uh on the 13th of july 1978
- 53:35uh burgorski was checking a
- 53:38malfunctioning piece of equipment and
- 53:41he's leaning over the equipment when the
- 53:44safety mechanisms failed
- 53:48and suddenly
- 53:50the particle beam is turned on
- 53:53he has been leaning into the particle
- 53:55beam to fix stuff
- 53:57all of a sudden that turns on remember
- 54:00all of those like tiny bullets going
- 54:02really really really fast like
- 54:05record-breaking really fast
- 54:10go right through his face
- 54:16yeah he just stuck his head in the path
- 54:18of a 70
- 54:20giga electron volt proton beam
- 54:24reportedly
- 54:25he saw a flash brighter than a thousand
- 54:29suns
- 54:30but did not immediately feel any pain
- 54:34now this is consistent with our
- 54:36knowledge of radiation poisoning uh
- 54:39generally when you are irradiated you
- 54:42don't know it's happened
- 54:44um it's not until later that the effects
- 54:47are felt
- 54:48um because it doesn't like hit your
- 54:50nerves it just destroys your cells
- 54:54um
- 54:56so
- 54:57what does this guy do
- 55:00he's a physicist he's working on his phd
- 55:03he is rebecca levels
- 55:05or he is nova levels
- 55:07god i'm worse than you uh he
- 55:12so what does
- 55:13this nova level scientist
- 55:16uh do he completely understands the
- 55:19severity of what's just happened
- 55:22and when faced with the knowledge that
- 55:24he's probably about to die very very
- 55:27painfully over the next few days
- 55:30what does he do
- 55:33he continues working on the
- 55:34malfunctioning equipment and just
- 55:37doesn't tell anyone what happened
- 55:40because if you don't acknowledge the
- 55:42problem it goes away right exactly you
- 55:45said to check out the chat what's
- 55:46happening in the chat uh just a few
- 55:48comments i can't really read it from
- 55:50here i know you and you didn't want me
- 55:51on my phone so
- 55:54not a good
- 55:55vince asked how late
- 55:57uh is he uh you're about an hour late
- 56:00but we're just getting to the good bit
- 56:03there goes my joke is largest in soviet
- 56:06union powered by three hugos
- 56:09he forgot to lock out tag out
- 56:12yeah
- 56:13yeah this is this is very
- 56:15very very oof
- 56:19uh
- 56:20so
- 56:22unfortunately
- 56:24a particle beam through the face
- 56:27doesn't work like cartoon gravity
- 56:30and
- 56:32remember when
- 56:35i talked about how
- 56:39uh one gray like when we unless live
- 56:42stream one gray of radiation that's just
- 56:44a unit of radiation it's a thousand rads
- 56:47um is
- 56:49likely death
- 56:50um i'm actually gonna look it up because
- 56:52i forgot to write it down
- 56:54but
- 56:56uh this guy got
- 56:58quite a bit more
- 57:02than one gray
- 57:04let me just
- 57:05very quickly
- 57:06[Music]
- 57:09yeah
- 57:10okay
- 57:12so
- 57:13he received a dose
- 57:16of
- 57:17200 to
- 57:19200
- 57:20to 300
- 57:23gray
- 57:25uh a gray's about a thousand road
- 57:27kittens that's is that correct about
- 57:29okay they're this is all estimated
- 57:31because they didn't measure it yeah but
- 57:35so he's also weird radiation because
- 57:38it's protons which is not what you
- 57:40normally get radiated with yeah like
- 57:43but they are bigger and heavier and like
- 57:46but easier to stop yeah it's a mix a
- 57:48mixed bag
- 57:49it's weird it's a bad bag it's a very
- 57:52bad mixed bag
- 57:56so
- 57:57let's give a little diagram just so you
- 57:59all know what's happening so he sticks
- 58:01his head in and it basically passes
- 58:04through the left side of his face like
- 58:06right up through there can you yeah you
- 58:10all have
- 58:11a diagram here i will move
- 58:15i will move myself
- 58:18so you can your breath stinks it's very
- 58:21stinky i will move myself so you can see
- 58:25come on
- 58:29nope
- 58:30also welcome back paige
- 58:32oh paige is back
- 58:34hi well i can't move this
- 58:38display within a display because i'm
- 58:40still learning how to use streamlabs but
- 58:42basically
- 58:43up through the left side of his face
- 58:46uh
- 58:48two to three hundred d you're deads of
- 58:51radiation
- 58:52uh which is more than anyone ever had
- 58:56received and anyone has since received
- 58:58the guy who died like who extra bonus
- 59:02died got
- 59:03in the last video got six gray
- 59:08so like
- 59:12officially
- 59:14five grays is like
- 59:17definitely deadly
- 59:19but
- 59:20a single gray is like probably dead
- 59:24so
- 59:27unfortunately uh after he just ignores
- 59:30it for a few hours um
- 59:33the left half of his face
- 59:35swells up beyond recognition
- 59:40and
- 59:41everybody noticed
- 59:44it was hard to hide it at that point
- 59:47um so people figured out like people
- 59:49found out what happened
- 59:51uh his skin started to peel revealing
- 59:54the path that the proton beam had burned
- 59:58through parts of his face through his
- 1:00:00bone and
- 1:00:01brain tissue underneath
- 1:00:03um yeah he could not hide this from his
- 1:00:05colleagues i'll i'll stop with the
- 1:00:07description i'm sorry i'm not sorry you
- 1:00:10all came here for gross science gruesome
- 1:00:13i said this was science history mixed
- 1:00:15with true crime i'm trying to be like a
- 1:00:17true crime podcast
- 1:00:19just k ridiculously chipper which is not
- 1:00:22not appropriate for this story
- 1:00:26so
- 1:00:27everyone believes that burkowski was
- 1:00:30extra bonus dead
- 1:00:32um he's taken to a clinic in moscow
- 1:00:35where the doctors could observe his
- 1:00:37expected demise they don't even pretend
- 1:00:40that they're gonna try to care for him
- 1:00:42they're just like we want to watch
- 1:00:44because like
- 1:00:45this is insane
- 1:00:47we like
- 1:00:48let's see what happens like why waste
- 1:00:50the science you know
- 1:00:53uh but
- 1:00:54then there's another wild
- 1:00:58twist
- 1:01:01burkowski
- 1:01:03survives
- 1:01:06here hold on
- 1:01:10uh this is him
- 1:01:12oh uh this is him a bit later this is
- 1:01:15like a more modern image
- 1:01:17uh decades later decades later
- 1:01:20not only did this guy live he completed
- 1:01:23his phd and continued working as a
- 1:01:27particle physicist
- 1:01:28there was virtually no damage to his
- 1:01:31intellectual abilities although mental
- 1:01:34work was much more tiring than before as
- 1:01:37he reported
- 1:01:38uh
- 1:01:39burgoys
- 1:01:41bogorski also lost hearing in his left
- 1:01:44ear
- 1:01:45and uh
- 1:01:47got tinnitus uh that's uh ringing in
- 1:01:50that year and the entire left half of
- 1:01:54his face was paralyzed
- 1:01:56um so if you're looking at the picture
- 1:02:00the side of his face you can mostly see
- 1:02:02is the right half the left half
- 1:02:05looks like it's a lot younger like it
- 1:02:07hasn't aged there are no wrinkles that's
- 1:02:10because as a young man
- 1:02:13his left hat the left half of his face
- 1:02:15what i'm showing the right the left half
- 1:02:16of his face was paralyzed
- 1:02:19so
- 1:02:21like the normal movement of your face
- 1:02:24that leads to wrinkles just didn't
- 1:02:26happen for half his face
- 1:02:28um
- 1:02:29so only half of his face aged
- 1:02:33um
- 1:02:36and
- 1:02:37so
- 1:02:38uh it's
- 1:02:40not actually
- 1:02:42a like it's not all bad in this in this
- 1:02:44story everybody lives uh burgorski
- 1:02:47continued to work as a physicist at the
- 1:02:50institute for high energy physics and
- 1:02:53actually achieved the post of
- 1:02:54coordinator of physics experiments so
- 1:02:57like this guy did really well as a
- 1:03:00scientist
- 1:03:01um in russia
- 1:03:03uh now
- 1:03:04because of the soviet union's policy of
- 1:03:07maintaining secrecy
- 1:03:09on
- 1:03:11nuclear power related issues burgorski
- 1:03:14wasn't actually allowed to speak
- 1:03:16publicly about the accident for over a
- 1:03:19decade
- 1:03:21he continued going to the moscow
- 1:03:23radiation clinic twice a year for
- 1:03:25examinations and to meet with and
- 1:03:27support other nuclear accident victims
- 1:03:30um and
- 1:03:32in the soviet union he was described as
- 1:03:35a poster boy for soviet and russian
- 1:03:38radiation medicine
- 1:03:40so like the people who knew
- 1:03:42thought he thought this was the coolest
- 1:03:44thing ever but the general public and
- 1:03:46the
- 1:03:47like scientific community of the world
- 1:03:49outside of the soviet union did not know
- 1:03:52there's been some action in the chat
- 1:03:53okay i will
- 1:03:54check
- 1:03:55the chat
- 1:03:56hold on
- 1:03:59uh from the same people that brought you
- 1:04:00chernobyl yes
- 1:04:02lots of secrets in the oh yep
- 1:04:07robert uh patron robert williams is just
- 1:04:10listing uh various grievances we have
- 1:04:13with cold war
- 1:04:15soviet union yay paige is back hello
- 1:04:18paige
- 1:04:19uh lisa
- 1:04:22oh no vince the track alignments chart
- 1:04:25is coming in about 5-10 minutes
- 1:04:28oh it's not a captain's alignment chart
- 1:04:30it is a show's alignment chart
- 1:04:35joe has an accurate reaction
- 1:04:38you don't
- 1:04:40it's just the face you don't need the
- 1:04:42face that's amazing
- 1:04:46yep joe that was pretty much the
- 1:04:47conversation why is your face uh blowing
- 1:04:50up and peeling from the inside out well
- 1:04:54boss
- 1:04:55i f'ed up
- 1:04:57yeah joe he lived
- 1:05:01ooh
- 1:05:02paige i'm
- 1:05:04i'm very happy uh that
- 1:05:07uh your mom's friend or acquaintance
- 1:05:10survived i'm really really sorry
- 1:05:13about the self-inflicted gun to the head
- 1:05:15that's
- 1:05:16really sad and i hope this person got
- 1:05:18the help they need like both physical
- 1:05:20and mental help uh phd candidate zombie
- 1:05:26huh
- 1:05:27yep
- 1:05:29uh
- 1:05:31tinnitus is
- 1:05:33the worst i am
- 1:05:35very sorry to everyone who has to
- 1:05:37experience that
- 1:05:39um
- 1:05:40so update
- 1:05:42on bregorski
- 1:05:44uh he's still alive today actually and
- 1:05:47according uh and apparently except for
- 1:05:49occasional seizures he's apparently
- 1:05:52functioning well he's a retired particle
- 1:05:55physicist he's married to
- 1:05:58vera nicolovina
- 1:06:00uh no vera
- 1:06:03nikolavna
- 1:06:05and they have a son peter
- 1:06:07uh in 1996
- 1:06:09uh he applied unsuccessfully for
- 1:06:11disability status to receive free
- 1:06:14epilepsy medication
- 1:06:16um so
- 1:06:17this is kind of transition to a slightly
- 1:06:19more sad topic
- 1:06:21um he was
- 1:06:23top of his field physicist like the
- 1:06:25director of physics experiments at the
- 1:06:29u70 synchrotron the most um
- 1:06:33the high highest energy synchrotron in
- 1:06:36all of russia
- 1:06:38and he wasn't even granted disability
- 1:06:41benefits to get his epilepsy medication
- 1:06:46covered uh he also
- 1:06:48showed interest in making himself
- 1:06:50available for
- 1:06:52studies to western researchers
- 1:06:54but could not afford to leave
- 1:06:57protvino
- 1:06:59so
- 1:07:00he can't he's
- 1:07:03he's this like really famous scientist
- 1:07:06who served his country really well
- 1:07:08but he can't afford to leave his
- 1:07:10hometown
- 1:07:11or epilepsy meds basically and that's
- 1:07:15uh nova and i were actually talking
- 1:07:17about this because uh it reminded me of
- 1:07:21both how lucky we are to live in a
- 1:07:24country where academic the academic
- 1:07:26elite is treated very well
- 1:07:29but
- 1:07:31i can't pretend that america treats
- 1:07:33veterans as well no
- 1:07:35like
- 1:07:36i definitely a mixed bag yeah we can
- 1:07:39critique
- 1:07:40like the soviet russian
- 1:07:42health care system or i guess we can
- 1:07:44critique the current russian health care
- 1:07:46system
- 1:07:47um for failing this guy
- 1:07:51but we also have to like reflect on our
- 1:07:54own country
- 1:07:56that
- 1:07:57like
- 1:07:58we have a separate stat for homelessness
- 1:08:00among veterans because our homeless
- 1:08:03population is so
- 1:08:05disproportionately
- 1:08:07veterans
- 1:08:08which is kind of shameful anyway anyway
- 1:08:11um
- 1:08:12i guess it's good that the academic
- 1:08:14elite are well cared for health
- 1:08:16insurance wise at least for us yeah
- 1:08:18especially in stem yeah
- 1:08:20uh yes in in stem definitely so
- 1:08:24uh
- 1:08:26i guess
- 1:08:29now you might be asking uh because last
- 1:08:32time on the live stream we talked about
- 1:08:34how
- 1:08:35um news every time there was a demon car
- 1:08:38accident new safety measures were put in
- 1:08:42place they weren't always followed but
- 1:08:43they were put in place
- 1:08:46so
- 1:08:47what new safety measures were employed
- 1:08:49to ensure that this uh terrible thing
- 1:08:53never happened again
- 1:08:57i'm not sure there were any officially
- 1:09:00like i couldn't find any uh remember due
- 1:09:03to the prioritization of secrecy in the
- 1:09:06ussr
- 1:09:08no one was told
- 1:09:11about the accident like it remained
- 1:09:13unofficial for
- 1:09:15over a decade
- 1:09:17um so i hope this
- 1:09:20hasn't already happened again
- 1:09:23like it's quite possible that this kind
- 1:09:25of thing happened more than once
- 1:09:28and only one person lived like
- 1:09:31we don't actually know that much like i
- 1:09:35looking around i couldn't tell that it
- 1:09:37happened again but yeah probably not
- 1:09:39yeah lately it's not in the same way
- 1:09:41wild speculation but
- 1:09:45i don't know
- 1:09:46so what can we learn
- 1:09:49from this story
- 1:09:52don't stick your head
- 1:09:53inside a particle beam
- 1:09:56even if it's off uh it's basically the
- 1:09:58same rule as
- 1:10:00uh don't stick your face in front of a
- 1:10:02loaded gun
- 1:10:03or any gun
- 1:10:05fortunately
- 1:10:06uh most modern accelerators the place
- 1:10:10where the beam is is also evacuated so
- 1:10:12it's vacuum and so it's you can't just
- 1:10:14stick your head through that it's not
- 1:10:16open it's a continuous tube that they
- 1:10:19evacuate
- 1:10:20so
- 1:10:22that's not harder to do yeah and that
- 1:10:24by the way
- 1:10:26startup scenes associated with modern
- 1:10:28particle accelerators yeah that is for
- 1:10:30science
- 1:10:32not yeah that's never safety that's just
- 1:10:33because yeah none of these decisions
- 1:10:35were made for safety it's just particles
- 1:10:38in a vacuum
- 1:10:39are
- 1:10:40easier to work with having a startup
- 1:10:42sequence uh is one of the ways like one
- 1:10:45of the necessary components of getting
- 1:10:47up to higher energy is that kind of
- 1:10:48thing
- 1:10:49okay
- 1:10:51i'm gonna check the chat and now
- 1:10:58oh my god there's so much
- 1:11:05wow
- 1:11:08okay
- 1:11:10paige apparently this guy
- 1:11:12uh had way bigger problems okay than his
- 1:11:15own mental health uh superconductors how
- 1:11:18how do you make different wavelengths of
- 1:11:20light come from those fast electrons
- 1:11:23uh
- 1:11:24something called the wiggled at
- 1:11:27jabs
- 1:11:30i
- 1:11:30[Music]
- 1:11:33don't know
- 1:11:34um
- 1:11:36so
- 1:11:37these detectors
- 1:11:39aren't always detecting photons they
- 1:11:42also can detect particles
- 1:11:45um
- 1:11:46yeah i guess i i'm not quite sure what
- 1:11:48the question is um i think it's how do
- 1:11:51we see the
- 1:11:52collisions how do the detectors work
- 1:11:54yeah so the detectors usually don't
- 1:11:56detect photons once in a while
- 1:11:59um they do but usually what the
- 1:12:01detectors do
- 1:12:03is they take the particles that come out
- 1:12:06and they stop them in some way and so
- 1:12:09sometimes there is there are photons
- 1:12:11eventually but the photons aren't coming
- 1:12:12directly out of the collision
- 1:12:14or at least say you want to detect
- 1:12:17um
- 1:12:18a certain type of particle that particle
- 1:12:20like an electron might go flying out
- 1:12:24um
- 1:12:25through
- 1:12:26some other
- 1:12:27detector material
- 1:12:29and sometimes it produces light as it
- 1:12:32passes through
- 1:12:33sometimes and sometimes that's through
- 1:12:35things like you can have a cherenkov
- 1:12:36detector this is an example um so how
- 1:12:39that works
- 1:12:40um is you have
- 1:12:44a big section full of
- 1:12:47uh some material often um i don't know
- 1:12:50if they use it in colliders but
- 1:12:52cherenkov detectors for
- 1:12:55um
- 1:12:56cosmic rays uh we'll use like water
- 1:12:58tanks but like ultra pure water
- 1:13:01and it turns out um that when you have
- 1:13:05these really energetic particles
- 1:13:07and probably going off on too much of a
- 1:13:09tangent but too bad um
- 1:13:12we did
- 1:13:13vince did come and start you although uh
- 1:13:16someone uh vince also recommended that
- 1:13:19we should put up a poster of an
- 1:13:21inspirational kitten with the slogan
- 1:13:24please do not put head in particle
- 1:13:26accelerator
- 1:13:28which i think is like a good that's
- 1:13:30that's probably that's good safety
- 1:13:31advice yeah right up there with your
- 1:13:32wearing your safety goggles yes um
- 1:13:35karen didn't wear her safety goggles
- 1:13:38no she doesn't need them
- 1:13:40but no so that one way that you can
- 1:13:42detect uh certain types of particles is
- 1:13:45um you have this material and
- 1:13:48when a really really energetic particle
- 1:13:50flies through it
- 1:13:52it actually is moving faster than the
- 1:13:55speed of light in that medium now you've
- 1:13:58probably heard before that nothing
- 1:13:59travels faster than the speed of light
- 1:14:01that's true for the speed of light in a
- 1:14:03vacuum
- 1:14:04but
- 1:14:05in air and water and other media the
- 1:14:08speed of light or specifically light
- 1:14:10itself slows down
- 1:14:12and it slows down enough that is
- 1:14:14actually possible for an energetic
- 1:14:16particle to move faster
- 1:14:18and so when that energetic particle is
- 1:14:20moving faster than light can in that
- 1:14:22same medium it produces like the the
- 1:14:25light version of a sonic boom it's just
- 1:14:27like when you move faster than the speed
- 1:14:28of sound you make a boom
- 1:14:30in this case when you move faster than
- 1:14:32the speed of light you produce a flash
- 1:14:34and so that's one way to detect and
- 1:14:36depending on how that flash is shaped it
- 1:14:37tells you things about the particle or
- 1:14:39how that flash looks
- 1:14:40um other detection
- 1:14:43techniques involve basically something
- 1:14:46that stops the particle and when the
- 1:14:48particle gets stopped its energy gets
- 1:14:51converted into heat light something else
- 1:14:54which you then detect there are a bunch
- 1:14:55of different ways
- 1:14:57to mess with particles and in further
- 1:15:00presence it is not an exact
- 1:15:03like
- 1:15:04it is an exact same it's an exact
- 1:15:06science but it is not
- 1:15:08a you use a lot of different techniques
- 1:15:11to detect different particles that are
- 1:15:12go that have different masses different
- 1:15:14energies and that's why these detectors
- 1:15:16are so big is they basically have layers
- 1:15:18yeah it's an exact so like the inner
- 1:15:20layer is actually i think it's not a
- 1:15:23one of these
- 1:15:24detectors in
- 1:15:25accelerators i'm so used to cosmic rays
- 1:15:27they use scintillators
- 1:15:29um which is something different it's
- 1:15:30like plastic okay and lights produced
- 1:15:33lots of ways to make particles produced
- 1:15:35okay
- 1:15:36so is the short version uh
- 1:15:38german coupling is cool though that is
- 1:15:41that's why
- 1:15:42reactive fluid is blue and like glows
- 1:15:45anyway
- 1:15:46okay uh
- 1:15:47david
- 1:15:52apparently in world war ii the us navy
- 1:15:54put air conditioners on all their ships
- 1:15:56not for the crew but because the
- 1:15:58electronics shouldn't have condensation
- 1:16:00yep
- 1:16:02we don't prioritize people but in fact
- 1:16:05at cern most of the buildings don't have
- 1:16:06ac either unless
- 1:16:09you work in the computing building
- 1:16:13uh
- 1:16:14ah okay commander 401 is using speech to
- 1:16:18text
- 1:16:19ah that's why yeah okay
- 1:16:22uh
- 1:16:24we
- 1:16:25joe wearing a tin foil hat will not help
- 1:16:27you
- 1:16:28uh please
- 1:16:30it won't work they'll still they'll
- 1:16:32still get your brain waves so
- 1:16:35now that we are done with today's
- 1:16:36planned rant
- 1:16:38uh let's go off script and talk about
- 1:16:42star trek lower decks star trek picard
- 1:16:45and star trek prodigy
- 1:16:47i'm gonna make a three-way venn diagram
- 1:16:51and you are all in the chat going to
- 1:16:53help me analyze
- 1:16:55just why
- 1:16:56lower dex is so much better than the
- 1:16:58other two like i don't think that's a
- 1:16:59controversial statement i think everyone
- 1:17:01agrees that lower decks is superior i
- 1:17:05need to figure out why and i need you
- 1:17:07all to help me how many people in this
- 1:17:10chat have seen all of these tracks
- 1:17:12particularly prodigy though that's the
- 1:17:14one thing you have to i am now
- 1:17:16putting
- 1:17:17i am now putting nova in charge of the
- 1:17:19chat
- 1:17:21oh okay but i have the dog okay
- 1:17:24i need to screen share
- 1:17:27sorry
- 1:17:28about that
- 1:17:30and we are
- 1:17:33gonna pull up
- 1:17:34okay
- 1:17:36so
- 1:17:37uh can can you see me i i don't actually
- 1:17:40see the stream lab so i'm just hoping
- 1:17:41this works
- 1:17:43um
- 1:17:45so we have so far but it's not up yet oh
- 1:17:48so we have picard
- 1:17:51we have lowered x and we have prodigy
- 1:17:54and i've i've started
- 1:17:56a little bit uh
- 1:17:59now the reason i'm comparing these three
- 1:18:02is because they are all
- 1:18:03in universe spin-offs of 90s trek
- 1:18:08uh i'm not gonna talk about disco i'm
- 1:18:10not gonna talk about anything that isn't
- 1:18:12currently coming out
- 1:18:13um
- 1:18:14no original tracks
- 1:18:16uh
- 1:18:18and they're all similar
- 1:18:20in many ways so for example picard and
- 1:18:22prodigy
- 1:18:24an old captain returns
- 1:18:26that's their gimmick
- 1:18:28uh in lower decks
- 1:18:29and picard they're the same because
- 1:18:31they're both in the federation while
- 1:18:32prodigy exists outside of the federation
- 1:18:35but still in the same universe and lower
- 1:18:37decks and prodigy are both animated
- 1:18:41uh
- 1:18:42let's see i'm gonna i know that
- 1:18:45prodigy has janeway it's also
- 1:18:51for kids
- 1:18:53uh it's on nickelodeon
- 1:18:55uh and oh man are the advertisements for
- 1:18:58kids shows uh lower decks is
- 1:19:01a satire of star trek
- 1:19:04um
- 1:19:06and it is
- 1:19:12it is definitely
- 1:19:13not for kids
- 1:19:16um
- 1:19:18no i'm breaking the venn diagram i'm
- 1:19:20sorry this is my first time using this
- 1:19:22software
- 1:19:24okay
- 1:19:25uh picard has
- 1:19:27uh recurring characters of picard and
- 1:19:30seven of nine also heads up
- 1:19:32i can see
- 1:19:34the venn diagram um it just showed up
- 1:19:37however
- 1:19:38uh
- 1:19:39we are covering like oh no
- 1:19:43okay
- 1:19:44here
- 1:19:46i can oh wait i need to fix that on
- 1:19:51see this is why
- 1:19:54i'm just gonna
- 1:20:01okay
- 1:20:04that hopefully will help
- 1:20:07i'll let you know in like five minutes
- 1:20:09there's a pretty big lag can you refresh
- 1:20:12the page that might fix the lag
- 1:20:14okay
- 1:20:16so
- 1:20:19we have picardon seven of nine
- 1:20:22uh riker and troy come back in both
- 1:20:24lower decks and picards or anne picard
- 1:20:28um i guess
- 1:20:30oh
- 1:20:31these two are both
- 1:20:33comedies
- 1:20:40is the chat suggesting anything it would
- 1:20:42be really hell yeah so so a lot of
- 1:20:44people haven't seen stuff um
- 1:20:46but you do not have to have seen all of
- 1:20:48these yeah
- 1:20:50says he only saw the
- 1:20:52pilot of prodigy
- 1:20:53um what did you think of the pilot of
- 1:20:56prodigy because
- 1:20:57oh yeah i can see
- 1:21:00uh says
- 1:21:02uh that
- 1:21:03he hasn't seen any trek since voyager
- 1:21:05but likes venn diagrams
- 1:21:07i like this
- 1:21:10uh i am glad that vince is just here for
- 1:21:13the venn diagrams uh vince since you are
- 1:21:16paying attention uh i would definitely
- 1:21:18recommend watching lower decks if you
- 1:21:21haven't seen any trucks since voyager i
- 1:21:24assume that means uh he has seen deep
- 1:21:26space nine uh if you've seen
- 1:21:29next gen
- 1:21:30voyager deep space nine and the original
- 1:21:32series you will find lower decks
- 1:21:34hilarious
- 1:21:36if you've only seen one of them you will
- 1:21:38also find lower decks hilarious but
- 1:21:40you'll miss some of the in-jokes if
- 1:21:42you've seen none of them
- 1:21:44you'll still probably like lower decks
- 1:21:47but like you you will miss a lot of the
- 1:21:49in-jokes but like i wouldn't say lower
- 1:21:52decks would be like a star trek to start
- 1:21:54with but it is very fun robert williams
- 1:21:57also says that we need an episode where
- 1:21:58they meet harry kim known as ensign
- 1:22:00greybeard
- 1:22:02uh
- 1:22:04would that be uh which one would that be
- 1:22:06prodigy or lower dex
- 1:22:09or picard
- 1:22:12i'm gonna we'll see what there's enough
- 1:22:15of a lag that we have to wait a little
- 1:22:16bit for i'm gonna make uh boxes in the
- 1:22:18chat
- 1:22:22i'm gonna add a beard with an e
- 1:22:26like gray within e not a
- 1:22:30like that yeah yeah i can't spell
- 1:22:33i mean both are technically correct a
- 1:22:36um ensign graybeard will be placed on
- 1:22:38the venn diagram as soon as the chat
- 1:22:40loads and i'm told which series uh
- 1:22:42robert williams would want it in
- 1:22:45so
- 1:22:46we watched prodigy
- 1:22:48uh
- 1:22:50we had some thoughts
- 1:22:52um
- 1:22:54i think
- 1:23:01it was
- 1:23:02okay
- 1:23:03characters are literal children
- 1:23:06um
- 1:23:08and
- 1:23:09i think in lower decks
- 1:23:17yeah vince you're right ds9 is the best
- 1:23:19track
- 1:23:22voyager is our favorite but we will
- 1:23:24admit ds9 is better
- 1:23:30yeah in lower decks although i actually
- 1:23:33like lower decks better than ds9 but
- 1:23:36you only like lower decks better than s9
- 1:23:38probably suddenly okay
- 1:23:40because i saw what because you saw ds9
- 1:23:43first and then i would have liked it
- 1:23:44either way oh yeah but lower decks
- 1:23:45parodies ds9 as well yes but it
- 1:23:48priorities all of them oh yeah but i'm
- 1:23:50i'm basically saying that
- 1:23:52lower decks is funnier because you've
- 1:23:54seen ds9 than it would be if you hadn't
- 1:23:56seen ds9 but i also really like the
- 1:23:58characters oh yeah because i like
- 1:24:01characters are phenomenal in
- 1:24:03uh ds9 and also
- 1:24:05the ending of ds9 which yes was just
- 1:24:08like the last episode but still
- 1:24:10left such a sour taste in my mouth that
- 1:24:13i cannot re-watch diaz yeah did you know
- 1:24:15that initially avery brooks wasn't even
- 1:24:17gonna come like
- 1:24:19uh ben cisco wasn't like he was supposed
- 1:24:21to go off and live with the prophets
- 1:24:23forever um avery brooks demanded that
- 1:24:27cisco say he was coming back soon
- 1:24:29because he's like
- 1:24:31i'm not gonna play this perfect father
- 1:24:34who then leaves his pregnant wife like
- 1:24:37that's so bad and it's still really red
- 1:24:40as though cisco was leaving his pregnant
- 1:24:41wife i'm glad avery brooks fought it as
- 1:24:44much as he could but like oh man
- 1:24:47that yeah if that show was very nice
- 1:24:51it looks like some support from robert
- 1:24:52williams for lower decks also
- 1:24:54uh
- 1:24:55i like that uh vince has not seen lower
- 1:24:58decks vince you need to see lowercase
- 1:25:01he says he'll get to it soon so
- 1:25:03he's heard good things all right
- 1:25:06uh has have you have they both seen
- 1:25:08picard uh because they can tell me
- 1:25:10things about picard and i can put them
- 1:25:12in different parts of the
- 1:25:15has robert williams seen picard
- 1:25:18we will wait
- 1:25:20find out
- 1:25:21okay
- 1:25:22until
- 1:25:23uh robert williams shows up i'm gonna
- 1:25:25say
- 1:25:29it's the lag it's nobody's fault yeah
- 1:25:31hashtag
- 1:25:35gritty reboot
- 1:25:37all right commander 401 uh says they
- 1:25:39stopped paying attention to star trek
- 1:25:41after they killed data
- 1:25:43which fair fair uh picard does bring
- 1:25:46back brett sminer
- 1:25:50that is all i will say you might want to
- 1:25:53watch picard if you really like data as
- 1:25:56a character
- 1:25:58watch picard i think you would like it
- 1:26:01uh oh
- 1:26:04yeah i'm not gonna
- 1:26:06do they show in the promos that data
- 1:26:08yeah they show on the promos so
- 1:26:09commander one also likes enterprise
- 1:26:16okay
- 1:26:17enterprise is not in this venn diagram
- 1:26:19and nova has not seen enterprise
- 1:26:24island says yeah they did bend dirty
- 1:26:26yes they didn't bend dirty they also did
- 1:26:29cassidy dirty and they did good zia the
- 1:26:31dirtiest yeah oh my god that was yeah
- 1:26:34that also ruined it for me i happened
- 1:26:36before season seven i didn't tell nova
- 1:26:39it was coming
- 1:26:40and she was just confused when the
- 1:26:43episode ended and they didn't bring
- 1:26:45jadziah back to life she's like wait
- 1:26:48that was
- 1:26:49stupid that was narratively
- 1:26:52stupid
- 1:26:53like it did not work in the narrative
- 1:26:56why it didn't
- 1:26:58she was also mad that like there was no
- 1:27:00scene of her and war like of worf
- 1:27:02grieving his wife
- 1:27:04yeah
- 1:27:06ds9 every time rick berman laid his
- 1:27:08hands on it it became
- 1:27:11less good
- 1:27:13less gay
- 1:27:15and like
- 1:27:17yeah less wholesome
- 1:27:19like
- 1:27:21can we talk about like
- 1:27:23the enemies to lovers story we never got
- 1:27:26with odo and quark
- 1:27:27actually no enemies with benefits to
- 1:27:30lovers arc that we should have gotten
- 1:27:32with odo and quark
- 1:27:34vince says apparently there's a ds9
- 1:27:36documentary where the writers got
- 1:27:38together and storyboarded the first
- 1:27:39episode of season 8. okay
- 1:27:41yeah yes you've seen it i have not i i
- 1:27:43need to show it to you because i've only
- 1:27:44seen parts i've only seen clips uh in
- 1:27:47that the writers acknowledge
- 1:27:49that garrick and bashir were supposed to
- 1:27:51be a couple initially but that got
- 1:27:53kybosh they also said there was going to
- 1:27:55be more quark odo things but that got
- 1:27:57kibash basically rick berman showed up
- 1:28:02this is over simplification rick berman
- 1:28:04shows up as like this show is too gay
- 1:28:05make it less gay
- 1:28:07and i am very here for chaotic bisexual
- 1:28:10julian beshear
- 1:28:13who just wants to be a bond girl
- 1:28:17truly
- 1:28:19like
- 1:28:21i
- 1:28:22i just love how
- 1:28:24chaotic everyone in ds9 is and that like
- 1:28:28just buy energy that flows through it
- 1:28:31anyway
- 1:28:32so we basically covered prodigy not many
- 1:28:34people have seen it and yeah it's just a
- 1:28:35it's a kids show and it's like very much
- 1:28:37a kid's show yeah the characters are
- 1:28:42if you can't get enough of track watch
- 1:28:44it i actually i will say
- 1:28:52yeah berman did do terry farrell dirty
- 1:28:55and
- 1:28:56i had mixed feelings about esri
- 1:28:59um
- 1:29:01i thought
- 1:29:02um
- 1:29:04i think i would have liked her except
- 1:29:06for what she represented which was
- 1:29:09like a a more innocent version of ginza
- 1:29:15yeah i i thought they basically
- 1:29:17did what rick berman said
- 1:29:19yeah
- 1:29:21no why
- 1:29:25yeah
- 1:29:27um
- 1:29:28i definitely think
- 1:29:30they were ready for
- 1:29:33the character replacing judzia to be
- 1:29:35hated
- 1:29:37so they made her this helpless small
- 1:29:39beam
- 1:29:41which was basically
- 1:29:43one you cannot hate esri
- 1:29:45because
- 1:29:46everything she is and does just makes
- 1:29:49you want to protect her she is helpless
- 1:29:51and thrown into this situation it's not
- 1:29:54her fault and she is doing her best
- 1:29:56just like the actress we love the
- 1:29:58actress she did her best with a terrible
- 1:30:00situation
- 1:30:02however
- 1:30:03it also very clearly set the message of
- 1:30:06you need to be meek and mild-mannered
- 1:30:09and more delicately feminine for you to
- 1:30:12be okay with us ds9 is i agree but ds9
- 1:30:16is not part of our venue
- 1:30:18you're right and commander 401 has very
- 1:30:20kindly uh moved us back over to picard
- 1:30:23okay prodigy um
- 1:30:25saying apparently red letter media did a
- 1:30:27wonderful thing
- 1:30:29um
- 1:30:30a review of some sort and
- 1:30:32uh yeah i agree they lost the message of
- 1:30:35nextgen and created a depressing
- 1:30:37depressing version of star trek
- 1:30:41okay i had gritty reboot but i'm also
- 1:30:43gonna put
- 1:30:46depressing
- 1:30:48um yeah i think
- 1:30:51everyone's getting on the gritty reboot
- 1:30:53trend and i have mixed feelings about it
- 1:31:02um
- 1:31:07but yeah
- 1:31:08okay all told i would say picard was
- 1:31:12fine yeah
- 1:31:14oh however
- 1:31:18one
- 1:31:19strong positive
- 1:31:26seven gets close that is true
- 1:31:29like just yeah i think that's a positive
- 1:31:31or a unitard
- 1:31:33yeah
- 1:31:34no more cat suit i
- 1:31:36i think seven looks well i think jerry
- 1:31:38ryan looks amazing in anything but uh i
- 1:31:41think the leather jacket and guns
- 1:31:44yeah also they let's settle
- 1:31:46and no more awkward heels that she can't
- 1:31:48run in oh yeah and she just gets to be
- 1:31:52chaotic good
- 1:31:54like
- 1:31:55they
- 1:31:56they have her
- 1:31:57get to the federation realize it's not
- 1:31:59all it's cracked up to be
- 1:32:01and she fights for
- 1:32:04good and justice and can't do that
- 1:32:06inside the federation which
- 1:32:08for the world i do think it really
- 1:32:12picard really really damages
- 1:32:15the world of the federation
- 1:32:18in terms of like its ideals
- 1:32:21but i think it does a great job with the
- 1:32:23character of seven of nine yeah oh i
- 1:32:26should also add i am specifically mad at
- 1:32:30this
- 1:32:33also saint vince we love garrick
- 1:32:45you're doing great with those text boxes
- 1:32:48the this is not um is new to the
- 1:32:50software so
- 1:32:53uh garrick
- 1:32:55was possibly
- 1:32:58the just
- 1:33:00most
- 1:33:01overtly
- 1:33:04queer character in star trek
- 1:33:07up until
- 1:33:08uh we got of course discovery but it was
- 1:33:11modern traffic yeah but discovery is not
- 1:33:13in this
- 1:33:14uh venn diagram
- 1:33:16one thing i really
- 1:33:18really really did not like about picard
- 1:33:23was the queerbaiting uh specifically
- 1:33:26queer catching
- 1:33:28um
- 1:33:29with seven and rafi before season one
- 1:33:33they announced like or during season one
- 1:33:35they announced that seven and rafi would
- 1:33:37be a couple
- 1:33:38seven and rafi get very few scenes
- 1:33:40together and like
- 1:33:42the straight couple the like doctor and
- 1:33:44the pilot
- 1:33:46not the doctor doctor the uh scientist
- 1:33:48and the pilot they get like all of these
- 1:33:51scenes they get all of this development
- 1:33:53i was ready for like rafi and seven to
- 1:33:55have
- 1:33:56any moments
- 1:33:58they start not trusting each other i'm
- 1:34:00like great this is gonna be like an
- 1:34:01enemies to lovers thing we know the
- 1:34:03trope we love the trope
- 1:34:04um
- 1:34:06and then they just don't have any scenes
- 1:34:08together until the end where they're
- 1:34:09holding hands
- 1:34:11look at me ha you don't see how they got
- 1:34:14there and you assume it happened off
- 1:34:16screen because they are all sharing the
- 1:34:18ship
- 1:34:18but not for very long because seven's
- 1:34:21off doing her own thing for most of the
- 1:34:22season and rafi's got like her own
- 1:34:25problems with her old family and like
- 1:34:29if ins i hope that in season two we get
- 1:34:32some seven raffy stuff but
- 1:34:36if we don't like
- 1:34:38even if we do
- 1:34:40it is not okay
- 1:34:43to basically say hey we have these two
- 1:34:46queer characters
- 1:34:48and then not show them until the very
- 1:34:51very closing scene of the season
- 1:34:54where they're just like
- 1:34:56sort of holding hands in a blink and you
- 1:34:58miss it or they're just good friends now
- 1:35:01i guess because it's the final episode
- 1:35:04like
- 1:35:05if it hadn't been announced i wouldn't
- 1:35:06have seen it and i am in that way
- 1:35:08thank you for your rant
- 1:35:10um we have a little bit in the chat so
- 1:35:11first of all robert williams is by the
- 1:35:13sounds of it a very impressive array of
- 1:35:15track cast autographs oh boy um i do not
- 1:35:19doubt it more comments like yeah just
- 1:35:21the the gritty reboot capitalizes on the
- 1:35:23fact that
- 1:35:24the world's kind of hopeless
- 1:35:26uh which it is yep
- 1:35:29and apparently
- 1:35:31already had a kid uh when she started a
- 1:35:33voyager
- 1:35:36good for her
- 1:35:37truly the goat yeah
- 1:35:40jerry ryan's amazing i think she's
- 1:35:42awesome
- 1:35:43anyway i think we should
- 1:35:46do lower dicks and figure out why it's
- 1:35:49great and then we might want to wrap
- 1:35:51things up because our crock pot is
- 1:35:53almost done making us dinner
- 1:35:55okay
- 1:35:56so i think
- 1:35:58now here is my
- 1:36:00thought
- 1:36:02um prodigy
- 1:36:05and picard
- 1:36:07are both
- 1:36:12actually i don't need a new text box for
- 1:36:14this i'm just going to drag one
- 1:36:18they are both super depressing
- 1:36:21like
- 1:36:23prodigy opens
- 1:36:25in a prison far from the federation
- 1:36:28where it's very cl where the prisoners
- 1:36:30are denied universal translators so they
- 1:36:32can't talk to each other so they're
- 1:36:34basically all in solitary confinement
- 1:36:36while doing hard labor many of the
- 1:36:38prisoners are literal children
- 1:36:41and none of the prisoners actually did
- 1:36:43anything like it is made very clear
- 1:36:46that like it's just slaves which is a
- 1:36:49lot for a kid's show and it is amazing
- 1:36:51so
- 1:36:52good job getting your steps today yay
- 1:36:54good job robert getting your steps uh
- 1:36:56the way they make it clear that these
- 1:36:58are just literal slaves and nobody
- 1:37:00actually committed any crimes like this
- 1:37:02isn't like we can talk about the prison
- 1:37:04industrial complex they're like taking
- 1:37:05it to the extreme
- 1:37:07in the first episode
- 1:37:09um this prison buys
- 1:37:12a toddler
- 1:37:15like it's a it's like one of those it's
- 1:37:17a cat person
- 1:37:19who doesn't speak like who's an alien
- 1:37:22but it is toddler coded like the child
- 1:37:25who is making the purchase because of
- 1:37:27course like even children like there's
- 1:37:29even a child running
- 1:37:30we've established so they're both
- 1:37:32depressed depressing as hell now why do
- 1:37:34we like lower decks it is i believe and
- 1:37:37feel free
- 1:37:39to like
- 1:37:41give your own theories because i really
- 1:37:42do want to hear other people's theories
- 1:37:46i think
- 1:37:48that the reason lower dex is the best
- 1:37:52is because
- 1:37:54it is earnest
- 1:37:57it is a
- 1:37:59just
- 1:38:00beautiful
- 1:38:02love letter to everything that is silly
- 1:38:05about trek like every parody it does
- 1:38:09it does with genuine love for the thing
- 1:38:12it's parodying
- 1:38:14um all of
- 1:38:16the
- 1:38:18uh
- 1:38:20mains like
- 1:38:21mariner tendy
- 1:38:24boimler and um
- 1:38:27what's his name
- 1:38:30shoot cyborg uh
- 1:38:33oh no
- 1:38:36i'm having a moment you were supposed to
- 1:38:38have this this is this is your venn
- 1:38:39diagram all four of the mains are huge
- 1:38:43nerdy fans like
- 1:38:47it is
- 1:38:49oh god
- 1:38:51i i broke it
- 1:38:53uh
- 1:38:54it is fan
- 1:38:58it is fan inclusive
- 1:39:01like
- 1:39:01i think
- 1:39:03prodigy is
- 1:39:05it's not a family show it's very clearly
- 1:39:07a kids show like prodigy does a lot of
- 1:39:10explaining what is happening rather than
- 1:39:12just letting it happen sam rutherford
- 1:39:16wright rutherford
- 1:39:18right rutherford
- 1:39:19rutherford tendy mariner and boymore
- 1:39:22those are our mans they are all
- 1:39:26amazing i love them all for different
- 1:39:28reasons
- 1:39:30like they are all so
- 1:39:32earnest and lovely i feel like i know
- 1:39:34all of them in real life like i know
- 1:39:36versions of them in real life
- 1:39:38and it's not making fun of track it's a
- 1:39:40stand-up of trap yeah
- 1:39:43it is making fun with track
- 1:39:45and it
- 1:39:47it is a satire but it is with love
- 1:39:50and
- 1:39:52every time i watch the lower decks it is
- 1:39:54an escape
- 1:39:55and i would say the gritty reality not
- 1:39:57only is it fan inclusive with an eye
- 1:40:00um
- 1:40:01but it is oh
- 1:40:05um also
- 1:40:07i can't very inclusive
- 1:40:09of
- 1:40:10people who've seen very little truck so
- 1:40:13[Music]
- 1:40:14maybe casual fans or
- 1:40:16not even fans people who are new to the
- 1:40:19series who maybe are familiar with you
- 1:40:22know tos because just part of the
- 1:40:23cultural lexicon
- 1:40:25i would venture that prodigy is also
- 1:40:27very newbie inclusive it is they are
- 1:40:29both newbie inclusive
- 1:40:31um
- 1:40:32but lower dex manages to be that well
- 1:40:34also being really exciting
- 1:40:38for
- 1:40:39old timers which i think is an
- 1:40:41impressive
- 1:40:42uh line to walk
- 1:40:47um
- 1:40:51i mean fan service in the good way
- 1:40:54like
- 1:40:55but yeah those are both fan services car
- 1:40:57picard and lower decks are both there
- 1:41:01to serve people who have seen all of
- 1:41:04track
- 1:41:06prodigy
- 1:41:08and lower decks are newbie inclusive but
- 1:41:10i think that might be another thing that
- 1:41:12lower dex has going for it
- 1:41:14there is no thanks robert
- 1:41:16uh what did robert say uh told us that
- 1:41:19that that's rough preferred because we'd
- 1:41:21forgotten rutherford but
- 1:41:23but the lag is so bad that yeah yeah
- 1:41:27yeah
- 1:41:28also yeah picard took the utopia out of
- 1:41:30utopia
- 1:41:31how do you say it planacia
- 1:41:33yeah
- 1:41:34yep yeah
- 1:41:37it was
- 1:41:38i thought
- 1:41:40so
- 1:41:41lower dex
- 1:41:44um is
- 1:41:47a happy escapist show
- 1:41:51that
- 1:41:53embraces
- 1:41:55the o.g ideals of
