- 0:06hello Jessica here with crochet at
- 0:08creations calm and today I am gonna be
- 0:11working the on a beanie
- 0:12which comes in child and adult sizes
- 0:16this has been a huge request for me to
- 0:19make a video for this pattern so we are
- 0:21gonna start out today with our H 5.0
- 0:24millimeter hook and some medium weight
- 0:28yarn and I chose I love this yarn by
- 0:31Hobby Lobby so to get started the
- 0:35pattern says to chain 9 and single
- 0:39crochet in the second chain from hook in
- 0:42the back bump so we are going to single
- 0:53crochet in the back bump so this if you
- 0:55flip the chain over this is considered
- 0:59the back bump right there so this is
- 1:00what we were working and now we flip it
- 1:03over and you don't have to do this just
- 1:06a suggestion that I prefer so eat
- 1:34all right and then the next row there's
- 1:38eight single crochet across hopefully
- 1:41you couldn't see that okay just kind of
- 1:44some sad foreshadows um so the next
- 1:47rubber in chain 1 and single crochet in
- 1:52the back loop only so you have two loops
- 1:54here or a single crochet in the back of
- 2:04each stitch across
- 2:17and chain one turn and then keep going
- 2:30so we complete this sequence until 458
- 2:42rows or until it reaches about 17 inches
- 2:44and I say that because most adult heads
- 2:49are around 21 22 inches and with it
- 2:52being in a back loop only of single
- 2:54crochet it's gonna have quite a bit of
- 2:57stretch so that 17 inches is unstretched
- 3:01so you want to make sure that it's nice
- 3:06and snug some brims can get really
- 3:10stretched out and they won't fit any
- 3:14longer so you want this brim to be
- 3:15pretty snug around that way it has room
- 3:19to stretch so continue working the brim
- 3:51and of course I chose a scheme that had
- 3:54the tail wasn't sticking out inside of
- 3:57pull the center to find it and it got
- 4:00all tangled up so hopefully we don't
- 4:03have issues with it
- 4:39okay so I have finished my Bren I
- 4:43actually had to go to 60 rows to get the
- 4:4717 inches and this is 17 inches on
- 4:51stretch so do not stretch it out check
- 4:54to see how many it's exactly 17 inches
- 5:03okay so now the pattern tells us to
- 5:06close the brim by slip stitching across
- 5:09row 58 to the first row in the back loop
- 5:13only of both so the back loop only of
- 5:16this one and then the back loop only of
- 5:19the chain row
- 5:38so that is how you close the brim up
- 5:49so then we flip it inside out and now
- 5:54we're going to be working along the ends
- 5:57of these rows so this is going to be the
- 6:00brim that's turned vertically and we're
- 6:03gonna work horizontally along there so
- 6:05typically I take some stitch markers so
- 6:17I've got four stitch markers now I put
- 6:19one here's the first row okay some of it
- 6:31stitch markers every quarter of the brim
- 6:47so basically I just put it on half and
- 6:50then I flipped it in half and then put
- 6:52it on another half that makes sense okay
- 6:57so now that I have my stitch markers in
- 6:59I'm in a place twenty-one single
- 7:02crochets between the stitch markers so
- 7:05twenty-one here and twenty-one here and
- 7:07so on and that will get the even
- 7:09eighty-four for the large size I mean
- 7:12for the adult size so run place in the
- 7:14first row one I'm crocheting over this
- 7:17tail to
- 7:47so I finished the tail so I'm on 12 so I
- 7:50should be halfway there
- 7:51for more than halfway 16 17 18 so I'm
- 8:07cutting them anywhere on the ends there
- 8:09they can 1920 here 20 21 I made count to
- 8:18make sure that's correct so we got 21
- 8:30there and we'll place 21 along the next
- 8:39that's 20 23
- 9:13take four three five seven 38 39 40 41
- 9:3042 and squeeze a couple more stitches in
- 9:35there at the end but we got it
- 9:37so there's 42 so we are halfway to 84
- 9:40see how it looks it's gonna start
- 9:43increasing so this brim right here look
- 9:45how much stretch it has it's very
- 9:47stretchy so that's why we measure it 17
- 9:50inches unstretched because it'll stretch
- 9:53quite a bit and this we're increasing so
- 9:55it's gonna be a little bit bigger all
- 9:59right so let's keep going 42
- 10:06[Music]
- 10:14what do you hate
- 10:4058 960 61 to 63 oh yeah 21 left to get
- 10:57to our 84
- 11:13250 4 5 6 67 68 69 70 71 72 23 24 25 26
- 11:3527 28 29 80 just four switches left
- 11:48anyone 283
- 12:02eighty-four okay you can see that I mean
- 12:07look at what the video looks like okay
- 12:09so we have got 84 stitches all the way
- 12:12around and I am going to recount to make
- 12:16sure I've got it correct so one two
- 12:18three four five six seven eight nine ten
- 12:52perfect so now what we're going to do we
- 12:57are going to join to this first stitch
- 12:59so join and I always recommend to pull
- 13:04tight so look we just reduce the size of
- 13:07that now we're gonna work the camel
- 13:10stitch so what that means is browny
- 13:13working behind these top loops so see
- 13:17there's like a little bump there so we
- 13:20would normally work on these top loops
- 13:22up here but we're not actually work
- 13:23behind it so one little tip I have just
- 13:29start out the camel stitch is to remove
- 13:31your hook and pull this loop to the back
- 13:39okay so see that that is kind of like me
- 13:42that little join look a little prettier
- 13:44so we're in chain one that's okay we're
- 13:50going to chain one and we're on a half
- 13:52double crochet and these little back
- 13:53bumps do you see those so hopefully
- 13:57they're portraying it on those little
- 13:59back bumps back there we're gonna
- 14:01crochet into those on a half double
- 14:04crochet stitch it's gonna be much easier
- 14:05fine on a single crochet it's not as
- 14:08easy half double crochet into there and
- 14:14I recommend okay grabs more recommend to
- 14:18use your finger to get in there so I put
- 14:20my middle finger up against it and I
- 14:24slide the hook on to see what that looks
- 14:29like now if this is hard for you this is
- 14:34hard for you to see this is hard for you
- 14:36to get your hook into I know that we all
- 14:38crochet at different tensions so I will
- 14:41recommend if you have a hard time with
- 14:43getting into this in the single crochet
- 14:45to replace that Row one with half double
- 14:49crochet row so instead of doing a single
- 14:51crochet on row one you can do a half
- 14:55double crochet now I will tell you the
- 14:59reason why sorry my voice is breaking it
- 15:02oh geez so I will tell you why the
- 15:05reason why the pattern is not written
- 15:07for half double crochet and it's simply
- 15:10just my preference I've worked it up
- 15:12with half double crochet and you just
- 15:16can now to sit a little bit more then
- 15:18you could with the doing it a single
- 15:20crochet so it was just how I liked it so
- 15:22so it is your beanie you make it how you
- 15:25want that's T so it kind of looks a
- 15:29little knitted because it's a nice
- 15:32little texture so want to keep working
- 15:37this around and these little back bumps
- 15:39here I know I get lots of questions
- 15:41about this row here everybody hates it
- 15:44not really hates it but I get questions
- 15:48of where do you probably Shea into how
- 15:50do I get my hook in there and you can
- 15:52see I'm just using my middle finger and
- 15:57pushing my hook pushing the loop onto my
- 16:01hook I should say
- 16:09in this pattern I released this December
- 16:12of 2017 here we are October of 2018 and
- 16:17this has been my most popular pattern by
- 16:21far ever every single day it gets the
- 16:26most views it gets the most purchases on
- 16:28my Ravelry store on my Etsy shop it and
- 16:32I get the most comments and tags and
- 16:36emails and everything about this pattern
- 16:38so I don't normally get a chance to make
- 16:42videos and I will just tell you that's
- 16:44because I work full-time and I have
- 16:47three busy kids so it's just videos are
- 16:50very time-consuming you have to setup
- 16:52you have to edit you have to I spend
- 16:55time in private camera making it to make
- 16:57sure the lighting looks good and they're
- 17:00just very very time consuming and so
- 17:02pattern writing and stuff I can kind of
- 17:05do on my own time my own pace videos I
- 17:08have to set aside hours out of my crazy
- 17:11schedule to do it so at this point my
- 17:15life I just am NOT able to do a video on
- 17:17every pattern so yes so we're gonna work
- 17:21on that but right now
- 17:24we're making them on a video so in this
- 17:29pattern also has a little bit more in
- 17:31the series it has an ear warmer there's
- 17:35them Finny scarf there's a messy bun
- 17:38beanie and there's a top down beanie
- 17:42version so if you're looking for
- 17:43something just really quick to work up
- 17:44that's got some texture stitches to it
- 17:46you can make the one that's top down it
- 17:49works really fast
- 18:21so we're almost finished
- 18:37[Music]
- 19:06okay so I will tell you this last stitch
- 19:09is kind of hard to see um I've had a
- 19:12couple times I've missed it so right
- 19:16here is the last one so there's the last
- 19:21stitch here and you flip it over there's
- 19:23the last on the back so I always suggest
- 19:30to count your rows count rows every
- 19:32single time kind of rows as you're going
- 19:35I count the entire time crocheting
- 19:38because if not I'll miss something so I
- 19:41joined I pulled it tight move the hook
- 19:55I could do this correctly twisted
- 20:07episode so let's see what that looks
- 20:11like so you might notice it'll start to
- 20:14kind of curve alright so I'm gonna stop
- 20:22I Thamer and I move on to row three okay
- 20:26so we are ready for Row three chain one
- 20:31and on these half double crochet
- 20:35stitches it's much easier to see the
- 20:37third loop see it's right there so you
- 20:42just fold the top loops that you would
- 20:45normally crochet into fold those down
- 20:48and work behind it
- 21:13so you continue this in the third loop
- 21:17of the half double crochet all the way
- 21:20around
- 22:16okay so we were at the end I'm going to
- 22:21slip stitch to join
- 22:24pull it tight move the hook insert it to
- 22:30the back alright so now for Round four
- 22:39chain two double crochet in the third
- 22:43loop all the way around
- 24:25okay so on that one I just joined as
- 24:28normal and I went ahead and chain two so
- 24:31we're moving on to row five and we're
- 24:35gonna front post double crochet around
- 24:38this first DC and then back post around
- 24:42the next
- 25:15so you're just alternating the front
- 25:17post and back post double crochets all
- 25:19the way around and then we will repeat
- 25:27rows 1 through 5 and then it looks like
- 25:34for role 11 will start decreasing and
- 25:46row 12 we decrease
- 27:15all right so then we join here and now
- 27:21for row six without a single crochet and
- 27:26the normal top loops all the way around
- 30:41okay so we're gonna continue on row
- 30:47eight and I will meet you for row eleven
- 30:54okay so now I have worked all the way
- 30:57through round eleven and I am ready for
- 31:01round 12 so you can see there's three
- 31:04rows of the camel stitch two rows of
- 31:07front post back post three more rows of
- 31:10chemo stitch two rows of front post back
- 31:13post and then I did my single crochet
- 31:15row for round 11 so round 12 we start to
- 31:21decrease so the pattern says ever I
- 31:23brought my loop to the back pattern says
- 31:25chain one and half double crochet and
- 31:28the third loop of five stitches
- 31:49and so now we need to decrease half
- 31:54double crochet in the third loop so
- 31:57that's gonna be instead of completing
- 32:01that half double crochet you loop over
- 32:04yarn over and then go into the next
- 32:07stitch and that puts four loops on the
- 32:10hook and you go through all so we've got
- 32:14five stitches and then a decrease so do
- 32:20that again
- 32:39and then there's five half double
- 32:41crochets and decrease in the next
- 32:50okay so continue that all the way around
- 34:49alright go ahead and join into that
- 34:53first stitch okay we brought the loop to
- 35:02the back so we are ready for Row 13 so
- 35:07it looks like we just half double
- 35:09crochet in the third loop of each stitch
- 35:12around to get 72 stitches
- 37:56all right so now we are ready for a row
- 38:0114 and we are going to single crochet
- 38:05and the third loop the four stitches and
- 38:09then decrease single crochet so from
- 38:12here on out you will be working single
- 38:14crochets to get to the top of the beanie
- 38:17so for single crochets in the third loop
- 38:24and then decrease
- 38:33ring or and then decrease the next and
- 38:41continue that all the way around
- 40:34all right so now we joined that first
- 40:38stitch and then there is no need to pull
- 40:41the loop to the back because we're
- 40:42working and then normal the normal top
- 40:47loops of that so row 15 single crochets
- 40:55all the way around
- 42:40okay
- 42:42so mu for ro16 you're going to single
- 42:46crochet in the first three stitches and
- 42:50then decrease single crochet in the next
- 42:54so single crochet in three stitches
- 42:58three decrease in the next and continue
- 43:04that all the way around looks like for
- 43:0648 stitches
- 44:34all right so now we are on row 17 ruined
- 44:39a single crochet all the way around
- 46:00all right yeah row 18s single crochet in
- 46:06two stitches decrease in the next
- 47:28okay row 19 single crochet all the way
- 47:31around for 36 stitches
- 48:35okay and row 20 says to single crochet
- 48:40in one stitch and decrease to get 24
- 48:44stitches around
- 49:43and then row 21 says to single crochet
- 49:47all around
- 50:33all right and then the last round is 22
- 50:37that's a decrease crochet single crochet
- 50:40all the way around that gives us 12
- 50:46stitches to end with
- 51:22okay and then join we're gonna finish
- 51:25off
- 51:44all right so now we're going to close
- 51:48the top
- 51:57and you can either leave it closed or
- 52:00you can attach a pompom to the top
- 52:03there's some post on crochet at
- 52:06creations comm for how to do it how to
- 52:10make a faux fur pom-pom and there's also
- 52:13one how to make a yarn pom pom by your
- 52:16hand without using a tool and we're just
- 52:20gonna weave in and out of these single
- 52:21crochet stitches to close the top there
- 52:29is also a messy bun version of this
- 52:32pattern so one with a hole at the top
- 52:34for your ponytail or messy bun to stick
- 52:37through it is called the Gracie messy
- 52:40bun beanie and it is on crochet it
- 52:45creates calm and Ravelry I'm gonna go
- 52:48ahead and turn this inside out so pull
- 53:00pull tight to close that hole at the top
- 53:03so here's the hole right there pull this
- 53:06tight and then we're gonna weave in and
- 53:09out a couple of times through the center
- 53:11to get it to stay and you can leave this
- 53:19without a pom pom on top I've had a
- 53:22couple of people who I've seen photos of
- 53:25that has made one without the pom pom on
- 53:28top and still looks really cute so I'm
- 53:38gonna take and tie a knot that way just
- 53:43in case these ends come through and this
- 53:45is the inside of the beanie so you will
- 53:47not see it just a small knot and then
- 53:50I'm gonna weave through again here you
- 54:04go so there is the top it's nice and
- 54:08closed and then there's the beanie so
- 54:17there you have it you can find this
- 54:20pattern on crochet creations comm for
- 54:23free there is a pdf version on Ravelry
- 54:26and Etsy to download that includes the
- 54:28Gracie messy bun beanie so it includes
- 54:31the on a beanie and child and adult size
- 54:34and in the Gracie messy bun beanie and
- 54:37child and adult size as well so you can
- 54:38find all four of those patterns together
- 54:40on Etsy and Ravelry for a small fee so
- 54:45thank you very much for watching and
- 54:46please let me know if you have any
- 54:47questions thanks
- 54:56you
