- 0:00this is Karla Hinton I'm here with Rabbi
- 0:03Ovadia Goldman spiritual leader of the
- 0:05Habad Community Center for Jewish life
- 0:08and learning we're going to talk about
- 0:10the coming visit of Evis loss she is a
- 0:13Holocaust survivor and the stepsister of
- 0:15Anne Frank she will be at a special
- 0:18presentation on Thursday November 21st
- 0:21at Oklahoma City Community College thank
- 0:24you for coming in rabbi thank you so
- 0:25much for having me here today you have
- 0:27been talking about this for months and I
- 0:29know that a lot of people in the
- 0:30community are anticipating Eva's visit
- 0:33as as we all as we all are they should
- 0:35be with this has been for years in the
- 0:38making
- 0:38we've tried for four years to put
- 0:40Oklahoma City on her tour list so yeah
- 0:44we're very excited about that okay okay
- 0:46you kind of helped a segue into my first
- 0:49question why did you think that you want
- 0:52it to bring ever sloth's to Oklahoma
- 0:54City so as we know there's quite a bit
- 1:00of turmoil in the world today also we
- 1:02know that the pool of holocaust
- 1:06survivors is diminishing everyday and
- 1:10especially those who can speak and speak
- 1:14well and have a message and a good
- 1:16message and we felt that especially for
- 1:20people that are a little bit younger
- 1:21this would probably be or might be from
- 1:24their only opportunity that they're ever
- 1:26gonna have to be able to hear directly
- 1:28from a Holocaust survivor now I know
- 1:33that ever has been around the world
- 1:35sharing her particular message do you
- 1:40think that her message is going to
- 1:41resonate with Oklahomans so one of the
- 1:44reasons I personally and the
- 1:45organization talk about community sent
- 1:47was excited about bringing her is
- 1:49because she doesn't just tell the story
- 1:52of the dark moments in her history the
- 1:56challenge and the hardship and the evil
- 1:58and the dark the darkness that she had
- 2:00to face looking like when she passed by
- 2:03dr. mengele and all
- 2:05at Auschwitz in the face but she has an
- 2:08amazing amazing powerful message in her
- 2:10life story of how she not only survived
- 2:14the Holocaust but with a lot of optimism
- 2:17and courage and faith and hope in the
- 2:20future she built an amazing life and she
- 2:24has an amazingly encouraging message in
- 2:27this way so especially that Oklahomans
- 2:30like we are today I felt this was
- 2:34important there on a more statewide
- 2:38level this state goes through sometimes
- 2:40with weather
- 2:41we had the Oklahoma City bombing people
- 2:46that had to survive some horrible
- 2:48moments but even individuals here in the
- 2:51community that I meet as a rabbi with
- 2:53over the last 20 years we go through our
- 2:56own small more micro issues in life and
- 3:00at the time that we're going through
- 3:02those challenges they feel very dark
- 3:03they can feel very overwhelming and I
- 3:06think that she's gonna have an amazing
- 3:07message both to those who had already
- 3:09gone through such things and to our
- 3:11youth who in their life will be facing
- 3:13moments like that I had the great
- 3:18opportunity to do a phone interview with
- 3:21her maybe a month ago and I was struck
- 3:23by her optimism but I was struck by her
- 3:26her optimism do you think that is
- 3:28something that the world needs now it
- 3:32always needs it todays days you know
- 3:35just reading the news watching the news
- 3:37every day don't know we can use it even
- 3:39more I mean for to have somebody who in
- 3:41her lifetime she was a witness to
- 3:44darkness evil she knows what that
- 3:47darkness and evil and that hate could
- 3:49lead to what hate leads to and she
- 3:52carries a message that resonates and
- 3:55very close to my heart the leader of
- 3:58world Jewry the lubavitcher rebbe of
- 4:00blessed memory he would often repeat the
- 4:02old age Jewish adage that a little bit
- 4:05of light dispels a lot of darkness and
- 4:07to her it is about spreading peace and
- 4:10love and light and coming from somebody
- 4:12who looked darkness in the face like
- 4:14that it's powerful
- 4:16okay great great great okay so I
- 4:18anticipate there will be people who will
- 4:20hear us talking and they will want to
- 4:23come to that presentation so surely the
- 4:31the presentation is an Oklahoma
- 4:33Community College right now there's just
- 4:35a few tickets left I believe in the
- 4:38regular sales there are some an also
- 4:41limited amount of sponsorship VIP
- 4:43tickets with a VIP event at which
- 4:46they'll be able to meet ever personally
- 4:49that's at ewa sponsor comm if they want
- 4:53to e VA SPO and sor comm if they want to
- 4:56go and be sponsors and get tickets that
- 4:58way another thing that i think is
- 5:02important to say here is that evil
- 5:05represents and embodies I mean she came
- 5:08from a area in the world and from a
- 5:10country that was from the most advanced
- 5:13if not the most advanced in science and
- 5:16technology in medicine and music and
- 5:20culture and every way and you do you
- 5:22would imagine that in a place like that
- 5:23there wouldn't be evil and hate and she
- 5:27saw and she saw that if there's no faith
- 5:29in God and there's no optimism and
- 5:31there's no hope for the future it would
- 5:33be very be very difficult to overcome
- 5:36the challenges she faced but you're
- 5:39speaking about people want tickets yes
- 5:41there's a limited amount left and there
- 5:43are some sponsorship tickets left as
- 5:45well okay well thank you for coming in
- 5:48today we just have a few days left
- 5:50before she'll be here yes we're excited
- 5:52she's gonna wait waiting to welcome her
- 5:54good good good all right well this is
- 5:56Carla Hanson reporting for The Oklahoman
- 5:58and Oklahoman comm for more information
