0:00Hi, History Recap here. Today, I'm going
0:03to explain a horror film called The
0:05Witch: Revenge. Spoilers ahead. Watch
0:09out and take care. The movie opens with
0:11a bloodied woman named Olena running in
0:13fear through a snowy forest. She
0:15stumbles several times but keeps getting
0:18back up only to be caught by a
0:19terrifying figure dressed in a black
0:22[music] robe. The figure strangles her
0:24while calling out the name Andriy.
0:26Fortunately, it turns out to be nothing
0:28more than a nightmare. However, the name
0:30the mysterious figure called out belongs
0:32to Olena's fiance, Andriy. Olena and
0:35Andriy are about to get married soon and
0:37they live happily ever after with their
0:39dog Ozzy. After Andriy heads to work,
0:41Olena calls her aunt Yevdokiya. She
0:44describes the dark force that appeared
0:45[music] in her dream and seemed
0:47determined to take Andriy's life.
0:49Yevdokiya becomes [music] deeply worried
0:51and says that they need to send Andriy
0:53far away for his safety. That night,
0:56Andriy returns home to a warm welcome
0:58from Olena and the two get intimate. We
1:00then learn [music] that the couple lives
1:01in Konotop, a small town in Ukraine.
1:04However, the situation is becoming
1:06increasingly dangerous as Russian troops
1:08launch their invasion of the country.
1:11Reports emerge that Russian forces have
1:13crossed the border near the Chernihiv
1:14region and are advancing toward Eastern
1:17Ukraine, putting towns like Konotop at
1:19risk. Sensing that Russian troops are
1:21closing in, Andriy secretly decides to
1:24take Olena and Ozzy to a safer city. It
1:26is then revealed that Andriy is no
1:28ordinary citizen but an active Ukrainian
1:31soldier. His plan is to escort Olena to
1:33safety before returning to his military
1:36base. Unfortunately, Russian troops have
1:38already taken up positions at various
1:40border points. As the couple prepares to
1:42take another route, Olena asks Andriy to
1:44stop at her aunt's house believing she
1:46will be safer there. However, their
1:48journey proves far more dangerous than
1:49expected. The forest they travel through
1:52is also guarded by enemy soldiers. Soon,
1:54a large group of Russian troops appears
1:56leaving the [music] couple trapped with
1:58no way to turn back. While being
2:00questioned, Andriy tries to pass himself
2:02off as an ordinary civilian who simply
2:04wants to get through. However, one of
2:06the Russian soldiers suggests to his
2:08commander that they take the couple's
2:09car because their own vehicle has broken
2:12down. The soldiers also become lustful
2:14after noticing Olena's [music] beauty
2:16and decide to have their way with her.
2:18The commander shows no moral conscience
2:20and readily agrees to the suggestion.
2:22The Russian soldiers order the couple to
2:24get out of the car and one of them even
2:25touches Olena inappropriately. [music]
2:27Furious, Andriy quickly draws his weapon
2:30and shoots at the soldiers, which leads
2:32to an exchange of gunfire. Despite the
2:34danger, the couple manages to get away
2:36from the scene. Several soldiers die
2:38while some survive because their
2:39bulletproof vests protect them. After a
2:42while, Andriy and Olena finally arrive
2:44at Aunt Yevdokiya's [music]
2:45house. A bullet apparently hit Ozzy
2:47during the chase, so Olena asks her aunt
2:50to treat him. Olena then notices Andriy
2:52and is shocked to see that he had been
2:54enduring the pain of being shot in the
2:56chest throughout the journey. [music]
2:58Olena and her aunt desperately try to
3:00treat him, but the wound turns out to be
3:02fatal. Despite attempts to help him, his
3:04life cannot be saved and he passes away.
3:06It is then that Olena realizes that her
3:09nightmare has finally come true. Soon,
3:11death itself arrives to claim Andriy,
3:14leaving Olena devastated by the loss of
3:16the man she loves. Meanwhile, the
3:18Russian soldiers gather to wrap up the
3:20bodies of their fallen comrades. The
3:22following day, Olena cleans Andriy's
3:24body overwhelmed with grief. Despite
3:26having witnessed hundreds of wars and
3:28thousands of deaths, she admits that
3:30none of them has ever hurt her as much
3:31as losing the man she loves. Consumed by
3:34grief and rage, Olena vows that every
3:37soldier responsible for taking away her
3:39happiness will pay, even if their deaths
3:41are neither quick nor peaceful. We then
3:43learn that Olena is an ancient witch who
3:45had renounced her magical powers after
3:47falling in love with Andriy and chose to
3:49live an ordinary life with him. After
3:52ordering her aunt to cremate the body,
3:54Olena takes an axe and breaks through a
3:56wall to reach a hidden chamber filled
3:58with dark magical artifacts. John Wick,
4:01uh, before a magical mirror, she breaks
4:03the mystical restraints that have kept
4:05her powers sealed. With her ancient
4:07witchcraft restored, Olena prepares to
4:09unleash her fury on the soldiers who
4:11killed Andrey. Meanwhile, the Russian
4:14commander Rovny informs his men that
4:16their food supplies have been destroyed
4:18in a Ukrainian attack, leaving them
4:20without provisions. However, he also
4:22permits them to act independently,
4:24allowing them to loot nearby civilians.
4:26The soldiers wasted no time raiding
4:28local homes and threatening res idents.
4:30When one man insists he has nothing of
4:32value, the soldiers notice his young
4:34daughter Katya and turn their attention
4:36toward her. A soldier named Bandos
4:38immediately moves to assault her, but
4:40another soldier Rusik refuses to join
4:42in, choosing to remain faithful to his
4:44wife. It has nothing to do with morals.
4:46That's just how scary Russian wives are.
4:49Outside, an old woman on a bicycle
4:51confronts the Russian soldiers guarding
4:52the area, condemning their brutal
4:54actions and warning them that they will
4:56face punishment. Enraged by her
4:58defiance, a soldier named Kalash shoots
5:00her in the head without a second
5:02thought. Moments later, the soldiers who
5:04had been inside the house return
5:05carrying piles of stolen goods and food.
5:08Katya is dragged along with them so she
5:10can be treated as a plaything for the
5:12Russian soldiers. At the same time,
5:13Olena is now ready to use her witchcraft
5:16powers to exact revenge. She takes a
5:18sample of the soldier's blood from the
5:20bumper of Andrey's car to use as a
5:22medium for black magic. That night, one
5:24of the Russian soldiers suddenly feels
5:26extremely nauseous and begins vomiting
5:28hair and a black liquid. A piece of
5:31paper also comes out of his throat
5:32carrying a chilling threat. This forest
5:35will become your grave. The torment
5:37[music] doesn't end there. He feels as
5:39though his legs are being cut apart from
5:40the inside and suffers until he finally
5:43dies. His fellow soldiers are horrified
5:45by what just happened, but they assume
5:47he has died of a heart attack.
5:49Meanwhile, Bandos, unaware of what has
5:51happened, finishes his heinous act with
5:52Katya and challenges the other soldiers
5:55to take their turn. However, commander
5:56Rovny begins to suspect that something
5:59is wrong and orders Bandos to release
6:01Katya. Bandos reluctantly takes Katya
6:04away from the camp and abandons her in
6:06the middle of the road. Soon after a car
6:08pulls up and Olena steps out to see
6:10Katya in horrible condition. Devastated
6:12by this, she approaches Katya and asks
6:15if she wants revenge. Later, Commander
6:17Ravny has a strange dream in which he
6:19finds himself inside on Yevdokiya's
6:22house where the witch warns that they
6:23will all die in the forest. He suddenly
6:26wakes up feeling uneasy. In the
6:28distance, he spots Bandos asking
6:30permission to relieve himself and lets
6:32him go. However, Bandos' urine has
6:34turned blood red and seems to dissolve
6:36into smoke reflecting the evil of his
6:39actions. At another guard [music] post,
6:41Rusyk, who misses his family, hears a
6:43strange whisper nearby. When Olena
6:45approaches, she notices a photograph of
6:47his family and decides not to kill him
6:49right away. Instead, she takes the photo
6:51and leaves. At the second guard post,
6:53another soldier is on duty. Olena tempts
6:56him by scattering money on the ground
6:58and he follows her whispers while
6:59collecting the money. The next day, the
7:01entire army receives the same text
7:03message, "This forest will be your
7:05grave." Rogers provides unlimited
7:08international texting to evil creatures.
7:10The soldiers immediately recall their
7:12friend vomiting this sentence before his
7:14death. However, Commander Ravny insists
7:16that it is merely a cyber attack by the
7:18Ukrainian army intended as a
7:20psychological operation to weaken their
7:22morale. However, a soldier reports
7:24discovering something strange in the
7:26forest. The group heads out to
7:27investigate and finds wooden dolls
7:29hanging from a tree. Commander Ravny
7:31asks who was on guard the previous night
7:33[music] and that is when they realize
7:35the guard is missing from his post. A
7:37search party immediately sets out and
7:38discovers footprints leading to the
7:40missing guard. They eventually find him
7:42tied to a tree with his mouth sewn shut
7:44and hair ripped out. His stomach is also
7:47injured and as his fellow soldiers
7:49approach, his body suddenly explodes.
7:51Everyone is horrified, but Commander
7:53Ravny suspects that the entire incident
7:56is a trap and believes the Ukrainian
7:57military is behind these strange events.
8:00Meanwhile, Olena performs a ritual to
8:02summon evil spirits and strengthen her
8:04shamanic powers. Outside the house,
8:06Yevdokiya is hanging clothes when a
8:08flock of crows suddenly falls from the
8:10sky, startling her. She hurries inside
8:12and finds Olena preparing to unleash
8:14black magic on Rusyk's family. Worried
8:16about the consequences, Yevdokiya urges
8:19her to stop. She knows that using such
8:21dark powers could make Olena lose her
8:23life as well. However, Olena refuses to
8:26listen and reminds Yevdokiya that she is
8:28hundreds of years older than her. In
8:30fact, Yevdokiya is not her biological
8:32relative, but someone Olena saved during
8:35World War II. Despite Yevdokiya's
8:37desperate pleas, Olena remains
8:39determined to carry out her plan,
8:41unwilling to consider the terrible
8:43consequences that await her. Elsewhere,
8:45Rusyk receives a photograph showing the
8:47dead and bloodied bodies of his wife and
8:50son on his cell [music] phone. He asks
8:52Commander Rovny for permission to go
8:53into town to make a call and check on
8:55the situation by phone. However, just as
8:57he is about to show the photograph, his
8:59phone suddenly loses its signal. This
9:01makes the commander [music] suspicious,
9:03and he accuses Rusyk of making excuses
9:06before ordering him back to his post.
9:08Soon afterward, the signal returns and
9:10Rusyk receives several more photos of
9:12his wife and son, leaving him even more
9:14horrified. Desperate to escape, he
9:16steals the military tank and drives away
9:18from there. However, Olena's shadow
9:20suddenly startles him, causing him to
9:22lose control of [music] the vehicle. The
9:24tank swerves wildly, crashing into
9:26everything in its path and accidentally
9:28running over a soldier, crushing him to
9:30death. In the aftermath, Rusyk is seized
9:32by the commander and the other soldiers,
9:34who brutally beat him despite [music]
9:35his desperate attempts to explain what
9:37happened. The next morning, the camp is
9:39rocked by explosions as Olena takes
9:41control of the soldiers' weapons.
9:43Meanwhile, Kelash, who has been
9:45separated from the others, encounters
9:47the apparition of the old woman on a
9:48bicycle whom he previously shot in the
9:51head. The panicked man fires at her
9:52repeatedly, only to realize that she's
9:54an illusion. He then comes across his
9:56commander, who marks his forehead and
9:58tells him, "Your time to leave has
10:00come." It turns out to be the witch in
10:03the form of the commander, and she kills
10:05Kelash before taking his heart. When the
10:07other soldiers discover their comrade's
10:09dead body, they are left in disbelief.
10:11Meanwhile, Olena returns home and
10:13savagely devours the heart to absorb its
10:15power. Yevdokiya tries to reason with
10:17her, but Olena lashes out at her,
10:19insisting that she needs more power. As
10:21Olena grows increasingly brutal, she
10:23even accidentally injures Yevdokiya. She
10:25then warns Yevdokiya to stay away from
10:28her until her revenge is complete and
10:30promises she will leave after that. That
10:32night, the soldiers discuss the strange
10:34events they have witnessed, [music] and
10:35one of them suggests that everything is
10:37connected to the legend of the Konotop
10:39Witch. However, Commander Ravnyi refuses
10:42to believe in the supernatural, and he
10:44orders his men to stay awake throughout
10:46the night and capture the enemy by any
10:48means necessary. The next day, the
10:50fallen soldier's bodies mysteriously
10:52disappear. Soon, the soldiers arrive at
10:54a horrifying sight where human body
10:56parts are displayed as if in an
10:58exhibition. Unable to bear the
10:59terrifying sight, one soldier takes his
11:01own life rather than face what awaits
11:04him. Meanwhile, Bandos suffers from a
11:06strange illness. As he attempts to
11:07urinate, blood comes out, followed by an
11:10insect emerging from his private parts.
11:12Desperate for help, Bandos heads into
11:15town where he encounters Katya, who is
11:17seeking revenge against him. He
11:18immediately begins pleading for his
11:20life, and Katya feels pity for him.
11:22However, Bandos takes advantage of her
11:24mercy and reaches for his gun to shoot
11:26her. But before he can do so, Katya
11:28reacts quickly and finishes him off with
11:30an axe. Elsewhere, the soldiers spot
11:32Olena and immediately open fire on her.
11:34Amid the chaos, two soldiers turn
11:36against each other and end up killing
11:38one another. While the remaining men
11:39continue shooting at Olena, leaving her
11:41severely wounded. Despite this, Olena
11:44manages to make it back home where
11:45Yevdokiya helps remove the bullets from
11:47her body. During the process, Yevdokiya
11:49warns Olena that once she kills the
11:51commander, she will die, too, as that is
11:54the price of the deal she has made.
11:56Yevdokiya desperately begs her to stop
11:58before it is too late, but Olena refuses
12:01to abandon her [music] revenge. While
12:02the four remaining Russian soldiers
12:04arrive at Olena's house, they split into
12:06two groups. Outside, two soldiers
12:08guarding the area get into an argument,
12:10mocking each other's parents until the
12:12fight ends with one of them dead. Inside
12:14the house, Commander Rovny notices fresh
12:16blood stains. The soldier accompanying
12:18him falls under Olena's spell and sees
12:20blisters spreading across his face. As
12:22his skin begins to burn, he screams in
12:24pain and suffers a horrible death.
12:27Meanwhile, the commander finally
12:28captures Olena and knocks her out before
12:31proceeding to assault her. However, his
12:33illusion soon shatters, revealing that
12:35the person he's assaulting is actually
12:37one of his own soldiers. Olena then
12:39easily slaughters the remaining
12:41soldiers, leaving only her and Commander
12:43Rovny alive. Just as she prepares to
12:45kill him, Yevdokiya compassionately begs
12:48her to stop because she doesn't want
12:49Olena to die as well. Yevdokiya reveals
12:52shocking news that Olena is pregnant,
12:54something her overwhelming rage had kept
12:57her from realizing. The revelation gives
12:59Olena a glimmer of hope as it means she
13:01still carries a part of Andrey with her.
13:03Although Olena begins to calm down, her
13:05desire to kill the commander remains
13:07strong. But, seeing her dog brings her a
13:10sense of peace, reminding her that she
13:12still has someone to live for. Olena
13:14still refuses to let the commander go
13:16free as he will hurt more people and
13:18cause suffering. So, Yevdokiya comes up
13:20with another idea to get revenge. Later,
13:22we see Commander Rovny, whom Yevdokiya
13:24has driven completely insane. When other
13:27Russian soldiers arrive, he tells them
13:28about the witch he encountered, but they
13:30refuse to believe his story. They accuse
13:33him of being responsible for the deaths
13:35of their comrades before taking him to
13:37prison. Yevdokiya's plan succeeds,
13:39allowing Olena to achieve her revenge
13:41without sacrificing her remaining life.
13:43Nine months later, Olena is seen
13:46lovingly cuddling her dog [music] and
13:48her newborn son, whom she has named
13:50Andrey in memory of her beloved fiance.
