An ACTUALLY Simple Trans Voice Tutorial: Pitch — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01Backseater, what does the scouter say of
- 0:03Pitch's power level?
- 0:04>> It's over 9,000.
- 0:06What? 9,000? There's no way that can be
- 0:09right. That's not sustainable. Pitch,
- 0:11you got to stop. [snorts]
- 0:15Are you tired of trans voice tutorials
- 0:17that require either a linguistics degree
- 0:19or a sound engineering degree to even
- 0:21understand it? Would you like a tutorial
- 0:23that could be comprehended by literal
- 0:255-year-olds? Well, here it is. Learn to
- 0:28change the voice from this [music] to
- 0:30this. How to trans voice pitch. The most
- 0:34requested video. I'm finally doing it.
- 0:36So, you might be wondering, why did it
- 0:38take me so long to make a video about
- 0:39pitch if it was so in demand? Well,
- 0:41truth be told, compared to other trans
- 0:43voice techniques, pitch is not really as
- 0:45interesting or in depth as a topic.
- 0:48But, it's still important. So, as a
- 0:51result, we're going to cover it today.
- 0:52Because while you can't only do pitch,
- 0:55you still got to do pitch in conjunction
- 0:57with the other techniques. So, I repeat,
- 1:00after you enjoy this voice tutorial,
- 1:03please don't only do this technique. Do
- 1:05it in conjunction with the other
- 1:07techniques. But don't skip this
- 1:09technique either. Unlike my other
- 1:10tutorials, how about I teach you the
- 1:12technique we're going to do first, then
- 1:14I'll explain the theory around it. Sound
- 1:16good? Cool. Let's go.
- 1:17>> [music]
- 1:18>> So, the best way I found to teach pitch
- 1:20is similar to the way Undead Voice
- 1:22teaches pitch in her video, which is
- 1:24also great, by the way. The only real
- 1:25difference between my technique and
- 1:26Undead Voice's technique is just the
- 1:28sound we make. So, just keep that in
- 1:30mind. I've just found greater success of
- 1:31changing the sound slightly. We love
- 1:33trial and error here. So, humor me and
- 1:35imagine a bunch of warriors behind me
- 1:37about to charge into battle and then I
- 1:39make like a da da da sound, right? When
- 1:43you make this da da da, it gives you a
- 1:45good indicator of how much higher your
- 1:47pitch should go. Now, if it still feels
- 1:50like it could go higher but a bit more
- 1:51comfortably, you just got to stack it.
- 1:53Da da da da da da da da. That kind of
- 1:57thing, right? But do it in those little
- 1:59intervals to find a comfortable
- 2:01position. If you feel any strain in your
- 2:03throat, stop.
- 2:05Since we're already making this sound,
- 2:07we can then tag it with a sentence. In
- 2:10this case, I'm making it did you know?
- 2:12So you can go da da da da, you know,
- 2:14doesn't feel high enough. All right,
- 2:15we'll just go a couple of times. D,
- 2:21you know, that kind of thing. You get
- 2:23into a general ballpark. So if you
- 2:25master resonance in this video, for
- 2:27example, not that one. Get that out of
- 2:30here. That one, if you don't do pitch
- 2:33alongside it, it'll probably sound like
- 2:35a stereotypical bad Spongebob
- 2:37impression, which isn't really the
- 2:39ballpark we're going for, now is it?
- 2:40Even when you're learning, you should
- 2:42not feel tension or stress in your
- 2:45throat. Okay? This is a YouTube video,
- 2:47not professional speech pathology. I
- 2:49can't make you sign a waiver. Okay?
- 2:51Please don't hurt yourself. Increasing
- 2:53the pitch is all well and good and all,
- 2:54but if you go too high, you won't be
- 2:56able to sustain the voice and you'll
- 2:57probably pass out.
- 3:00I'm okay. If we increase our pitch too
- 3:03much, no one's going to hear us at the
- 3:05party. And if no one around us can hear
- 3:08us speak, then what's the point of voice
- 3:10training? Now's the part of the video
- 3:12where we talk about the app Voice Tools.
- 3:14Don't worry, this isn't a sponsor. I can
- 3:16dig on it all I want. So this app's
- 3:18popular, really popular. Okay, so
- 3:22essentially it shows your pitch on this
- 3:24graph [music] here, but represents each
- 3:26bit of pitch in these colorcoded boxes,
- 3:29which you know lowers the barrier of
- 3:31entry of knowing what rough pitch range
- 3:33is considered masculine, feminine, or
- 3:36androgynous, which just means in
- 3:38between. The issue comes where if you
- 3:39rely on this too much to determine your
- 3:41progress, um, one, you'll stagnate a
- 3:44bit. B, you're probably going to talk so
- 3:45high you are going to hurt your throat.
- 3:47Just because the pink box goes all the
- 3:49way up there does not mean you have to
- 3:51go to the very top of the pink box.
- 3:53Okay? Most sis women talk in like the
- 3:56lower section of this pink box. And
- 3:58some, believe it or not, are even in the
- 4:00androgynous zone. Talking in the
- 4:02androgynous zone will not make you sound
- 4:04masculine. That's not how androgyny
- 4:07works. There's a lot of factors in trans
- 4:09voice that shape the gender perception.
- 4:11If your voice is in the blue box, don't
- 4:13view that as a be all end all of how
- 4:15your voice is going to be gendered.
- 4:17There's no objective way to view how
- 4:19masculine or feminine you or I sound. It
- 4:22depends heavily on who you're talking
- 4:23to, the culture they're in, the social
- 4:25experience they have, that sort of
- 4:26thing. So, just keep that in mind when
- 4:28you know accounting for what you see in
- 4:31this app. I'd say in the past there was
- 4:33a misconception that trans voice is
- 4:34purely only pitch. That's why older
- 4:37transvoice tutorials hyper emphasize how
- 4:40much pitch is not needed, but we've
- 4:42accidentally caused a thing where now we
- 4:44think pitch is completely unimportant.
- 4:47Think of pitch is that really overrated
- 4:49movie that your friends say or absolute
- 4:51cinema, but they're ignoring all these
- 4:52other movies that you like that are a
- 4:54[music] bit underrated. View trans voice
- 4:56techniques is all-encompassing. They're
- 4:58all important. They all work together.
- 5:00We just want all the techniques to be
- 5:02acknowledged. And so we talk about pitch
- 5:04in a bit of a strange way. So just keep
- 5:06that in mind.
- 5:08>> I take it you don't have a ticket.
- 5:12There's also other ways pitch can help
- 5:14us, but this is technically procity.
- 5:15>> Frost one.
- 5:16>> So for anyone that was raised with the
- 5:18expectation they would become a man.
- 5:20There's a couple of little social habits
- 5:23that have intertwined into our speech.
- 5:25If we want to speak more fem, we have to
- 5:28undo these. For example, observe how I
- 5:31say this sentence in a masculine and
- 5:32feminine voice. And pay attention
- 5:34specifically to the end of the sentence.
- 5:36>> This is a sentence.
- 5:38>> This is a sentence. This is a sentence.
- 5:41So, that third one is considerably more
- 5:43fem. The second one is pretty fem, but
- 5:44then there's a bit of a dip at the end,
- 5:46which is an overexaggeration of what's
- 5:48going on in that first one. Essentially,
- 5:50when you do voice training, you're going
- 5:51to notice your voice will probably do
- 5:53this at least once. You'll feel like a
- 5:55sudden drop, like you're on a roller
- 5:57coaster, right? We have to undo this.
- 5:59And there's a couple of ways we can do
- 6:00that. And this is my favorite way.
- 6:02[music] Essentially, when you do a
- 6:03sentence, try to extend it a little
- 6:05longer to make the sentence well longer.
- 6:08This sounds like this. This is a
- 6:09sentence. Yeah, that's super
- 6:12exaggerated. No one talks like that. But
- 6:14every time you do that sentence, try to
- 6:15then slowly chop it down until it sounds
- 6:18more natural. This is a sentence. This
- 6:20is a sentence. This is a sentence. Like
- 6:23that. Right? This way, you'll avoid that
- 6:25dip at the end, and you'll find the
- 6:27sweet spot of where it sounds natural
- 6:29inonation wise. Feminine pitches tend to
- 6:31flick up a little bit at the end of a
- 6:33sentence. That's what we're trying to
- 6:34replicate here. You know, when you ask a
- 6:36question like, "Is that good?" and our
- 6:38pitch like bounces up. We're replicating
- 6:40that, but slightly less exaggerated. You
- 6:42can do a similar thing like we did
- 6:44before, but with this rising inonation.
- 6:47This is good. This is good.
- 6:49The first one sounds way more unsure
- 6:51because we're doing that rising
- 6:52inonation as if we're asking a question.
- 6:55We need to cut it down a little bit so
- 6:57we sound more sure of ourselves.
- 6:58Otherwise, that speech at school will be
- 7:01pretty rough. In this speech, I'll
- 7:02explain why dinosaurs are cool. I think
- 7:06another thing to note, the voice kind of
- 7:07jumps up and down a little bit with some
- 7:09voices as opposed to a masculine voice
- 7:11being a bit monotone. So, if I like had
- 7:14the like little bit of jumping up and
- 7:15down with the mask voice, it would sound
- 7:17a bit like well all over the place.
- 7:19That's kind of what we're doing with the
- 7:20fan voice. We're kind of going up and
- 7:22down and then up and then down and up
- 7:23and then down and up and then down. So,
- 7:26when I speak, you'll hear the slight
- 7:28little jumps and jumps and jumps and
- 7:30that kind of thing. The best way to
- 7:32learn this specifically is mostly to
- 7:34copy and shadow other people speaking.
- 7:36When doing this, copy someone that has
- 7:39an accent similar to you or an accent
- 7:41that you would like. I did this of trans
- 7:43voice lessons when I started out and it
- 7:46Americanized my accent.
- 7:50How many Australia themed videos do I
- 7:51have to make before people believe me?
- 7:53To recap everything in this video in a
- 7:55couple of seconds. When we want to raise
- 7:56our pitch, we want to d, you know, like
- 7:59that to get to a comfortable pitch.
- 8:01Don't go too high or you'll hurt
- 8:02yourself. Be wary of the little dip that
- 8:04will happen at the end of a sentence.
- 8:06You can circumvent this by making the
- 8:08sentence a little longer then slowly cut
- 8:10it down. like this is a sentence, this
- 8:13is a sentence, this is a sentence like
- 8:15that. Also, you can try to have a slight
- 8:17rise in ination to make it sound more
- 8:19fem. In addition, you can try to copy
- 8:21voices to get that slight little
- 8:22bounciness to it. And that was the long
- 8:24awaited pitch voice tutorial. I know it
- 8:27took me quite a while, a very long time.
- 8:29And then this is a highly requested one.
- 8:32Truth be told, there's not that much
- 8:33source that I could put in this one as
- 8:35it's not the most interesting topic. So,
- 8:38I decided to tag on some extra little
- 8:39inonation stuff to hopefully make the
- 8:42tutorial more fun and enjoyable and give
- 8:43you more to work with and tinker with. I
- 8:45hope this tutorial is helpful. I know
- 8:47this will probably be one of the more
- 8:48popular voice tutorials I do just
- 8:50because of the topic. But I encourage
- 8:52you to check out voice tutorials of all
- 8:54sorts of techniques throughout the
- 8:56journey. Though, do it one by one. Don't
- 8:58rush into too many at once. Whether
- 8:59[music] that videos from me or other
- 9:01people, just bear in mind that I also do
- 9:04trans voice lessons on Patreon. If you
- 9:07are interested in joining that and
- 9:09getting one-on-one lessons with me and
- 9:11maybe group lessons, if I ever open
- 9:12those back up again by the time you're
- 9:14seeing this video, check the Patreon and
- 9:16see. Just note, my slots are usually
- 9:18full. Um, it's actually pretty rare for
- 9:21a slot to be open. I won't lie to you.
- 9:24Once I get a student, they stay for
- 9:26quite a while. And that warms my heart
- 9:28that I've done lessons good enough that
- 9:30people want to stay. That makes me
- 9:31[music] happy. Just bear in mind, I'm
- 9:32not a company like Seattle Voice Lab or
- 9:35Trans Voice Lessons. I'm just one little
- 9:37goober in Australia that's just doing
- 9:40their best. I'm just a YouTuber that has
- 9:42a Patreon where you can learn trans
- 9:43voice with the techniques I used in my
- 9:45journey. [music] Simply put, because my
- 9:47income is not as directly tied to voice
- 9:49lessons, per se, I can kind of put all
- 9:52the information in the videos and not
- 9:53need to withhold anything. So, I hope as
- 9:56a result it makes the voice tutorials
- 9:57more helpful and easy to learn. So, I
- 9:59won't sugarcoat it. Voice training is
- 10:01hard and it's okay if when you do this
- 10:04it doesn't work straight away. It's okay
- 10:06if it takes a week and it's still not
- 10:07working. It's okay if you've done voice
- 10:08training for a couple of years and
- 10:10you're not really getting anywhere
- 10:12right. Voice training progress [music]
- 10:13is not linear and different people will
- 10:15get it at different speeds. Don't view
- 10:17that as an indication of your skill or
- 10:21worthiness to have a girl voice if that
- 10:23makes sense. The rough thing is like if
- 10:26you play an instrument poorly, you know,
- 10:28you don't view that as a reflection of
- 10:30you because it's not really your body.
- 10:32You're just using a guitar, for example,
- 10:34as an extension of your body. But if you
- 10:36do a transv voice technique wrong, then
- 10:39you can feel really bad about yourself
- 10:41because that's the voice is part of your
- 10:43body. All these little muscles and bones
- 10:46are part of our body. So, it's okay if
- 10:49you feel really upset when this stuff
- 10:52doesn't work straight away. I know
- 10:54personally, and I've shared this
- 10:56anecdote a few times, when I was
- 10:58starting my voice training journey, I
- 10:59remember staring at a brick wall for a
- 11:01couple of hours, saying heat from fire,
- 11:03fire from heat repetitively. I did it
- 11:06until I cried. You just got to practice
- 11:08in tiny little chunks rather than a
- 11:10really long gauntlet in front of a brick
- 11:12wall. If it means anything, I had a lot
- 11:14of trouble early on. It was kind of the
- 11:16thing that I did last really with my
- 11:18transition. It was always the part I was
- 11:20bad at, if that makes sense. I got
- 11:22invalidated quite a lot because I
- 11:25couldn't do it. I could, you know, dress
- 11:27fam, go to the shops, that kind of
- 11:28thing. But then my voice was this,
- 11:30right? I was told constantly, "Oh, you
- 11:33can't do a trans voice. You can't sound
- 11:36like a girl ever." That kind of [music]
- 11:37nonsense, right? If you're able to
- 11:39articulate sentences in any capacity,
- 11:41you can do trans voice. You know, it's
- 11:45not a thing locked off to certain
- 11:47people. So, if you have those moments
- 11:49where you feel like you can't do it or
- 11:50you feel like it's not worth it, you
- 11:52can't get out of bed to voice train,
- 11:55just know that so many of us feel that
- 11:58way. And videos like these can't
- 12:03instantly fix that, but it can give you
- 12:07the tools in order to do that. I'm
- 12:09trying my best. [laughter]
- 12:11I'll admit that I was given this
- 12:14position in the trans voice space very
- 12:16abruptly. I'm still adapting to it and
- 12:19I'm still [music] learning lots. There's
- 12:20a couple of mistakes in some of the
- 12:21older videos, for example, that I've
- 12:22since corrected and even the newer
- 12:24updated ones have some things I'd like
- 12:26to correct someday. So, I acknowledge
- 12:27these voice tutorials are not perfect in
- 12:29any capacity and they don't substitute
- 12:31seeing a professional speech ofologist,
- 12:34but I hope it makes this information
- 12:36more accessible and I hope it gives you
- 12:38like a good starting point or even a
- 12:41good end point. If this video helps you
- 12:43get started, let me know. [music] If you
- 12:45voice train and get to a spot you feel
- 12:47good at and use the videos, feel free to
- 12:49come back and let me know. It really
- 12:51warms my heart when some of the older
- 12:52videos I get comments saying that it
- 12:54helped people a lot.
- 12:56I have um
- 12:59a giant manifestation of pitch going
- 13:01Super Saiyan that is going to
- 13:04cause a lot of damage if I don't do
- 13:07anything about that. So, um I'm I'm
- 13:09going to go sort that. But but you get
- 13:10practicing, okay? Tiny little sessions
- 13:13throughout the day. and um and like
- 13:15being hydrated and believing in
- 13:17yourself. Believe in yourself. You can
- 13:20do it. Okay. Okay. As always, stay
- 13:23hydrated and know that you are valid.
- 13:26I'll see you next week.
- 13:30>> 3 hours later.
- 13:31>> Well, Pitch, I finally made the pitch
- 13:33tutorial as I promised. Now there's no
- 13:35more loose ends and I can make whatever
- 13:37videos I want.
- 13:41What?
