  11. 0:19story this is the first part of a series
  12. 0:21of amazing stories of people surviving
  13. 0:23in extreme situations
  14. 0:25against all odds let's get to it welcome
  15. 0:28to story time
  16. 0:37on january 23 2006 ricky mcgee
  17. 0:41who was 35 years old was driving through
  18. 0:45the australian outback
  19. 0:46on his way to a new job in western
  20. 0:48australia
  21. 0:49when something happened now we don't
  22. 0:53really know
  23. 0:53exactly what it was that happened to him
  24. 0:56because he has given different stories
  25. 0:58over the years
  26. 0:59one was that he picked up a group of
  27. 1:01hitchhikers and the next thing he
  28. 1:03remembers
  29. 1:04uh was waking up in a shallow grave in
  30. 1:07the
  31. 1:07outback with dingo scratching that
  32. 1:10plastic wrapped over him
  33. 1:12in another version he said that he
  34. 1:14picked up
  35. 1:15only one aboriginal hitchhiker who he
  36. 1:19thinks must have drugged him drugged his
  37. 1:21drink at some point
  38. 1:22ended up again with him in a shallow
  39. 1:24grave and dingo scratching at him
  40. 1:26and yet another story he gave he said
  41. 1:29that uh his car broke down
  42. 1:31and finally there was another about him
  43. 1:33having been carjacked by an armed game
  44. 1:36but the police never found evidence of
  45. 1:39any crimes whatever the reason for what
  46. 1:42happened
  47. 1:42uh the reality is is that he found
  48. 1:45himself in a most
  49. 1:46uh dire situation he woke up in the
  50. 1:49middle of nowhere
  51. 1:50he was unable to locate his car and
  52. 1:52clueless about his exact whereabouts
  53. 1:54but one thing was sure he was out in
  54. 1:57rugged perilous terrain
  55. 1:58the tanami desert which is where he was
  56. 2:00can reach up to 40 degrees fahrenheit
  57. 2:02during the day
  58. 2:03and get very very cold at night and not
  59. 2:05only that there are all sorts of
  60. 2:07dangerous animals so at the beginning he
  61. 2:10started to walk
  62. 2:11and he managed to walk for 10 days
  63. 2:14or so through the desert thinking
  64. 2:16erroneously
  65. 2:17that the further he walked the less time
  66. 2:19it would take for rescuers to find him
  67. 2:21so he kept on walking often losing
  68. 2:24consciousness because of heat exhaustion
  69. 2:26he claims to have made temporary
  70. 2:28shelters using branches and leaves
  71. 2:30and says he mainly lived off of eating
  72. 2:33frogs
  73. 2:34leeches snakes and drinking water from
  74. 2:37dams and water holes
  75. 2:38when he couldn't find water he drank his
  76. 2:40own urine at night he barricaded his
  77. 2:42shelter with rocks
  78. 2:43to prevent the dingoes from trying to
  79. 2:45eat him as he slept
  80. 2:46luckily he had some things going for him
  81. 2:49one that even though
  82. 2:50temperatures were high it was the middle
  83. 2:52of wet season
  84. 2:53and two there was an abundance of small
  85. 2:56animals
  86. 2:56he could eat and uh finally he was
  87. 3:00lucky enough to find an old windmill
  88. 3:02which although decrepit provided him
  89. 3:04protection
  90. 3:05and shelter but even with this sort of
  91. 3:07good luck after
  92. 3:08some time being exposed to elements he
  93. 3:10was extremely
  94. 3:12weak to the extent that he was unable to
  95. 3:14travel
  96. 3:15as far on his daily foraging expeditions
  97. 3:18he also said
  98. 3:18that at one point he had like an abscess
  99. 3:21on one of his teeth which could have
  100. 3:23been fatal for
  101. 3:24the for him in that weak state of his so
  102. 3:26he pried it out with his car keys
  103. 3:28all in all he would survive like this
  104. 3:30for 71 days
  105. 3:32but still authorities were baffled maybe
  106. 3:35are baffled by his case
  107. 3:36eventually workers on a remote cattle
  108. 3:39ranch
  109. 3:39stumbled upon mcgee uh he had become
  110. 3:43skeletally thin having lost more than
  111. 3:45100 pounds
  112. 3:47he was starving sunburned and suffering
  113. 3:49from malnutrition
  114. 3:50and exposure birndudu station manager
  115. 3:53mark clifford
  116. 3:54described mcgee as a walking skeleton
  117. 3:57when he was brought to the station he
  118. 4:00said that the area in which he was found
  119. 4:02was one of the most isolated places in
  120. 4:05australia
  121. 4:05he was taken to a local hospital and
  122. 4:07treated for severe dehydration and
  123. 4:09malnutrition but besides that
  124. 4:11he seemed to be all right and he
  125. 4:13recovered quite quickly
  126. 4:14what exactly had happened to him remains
  127. 4:16a mystery authorities
  128. 4:18originally expressed skepticism about
  129. 4:20his story
  130. 4:21and his vehicle has never been found
  131. 4:24this
  132. 4:24is how mcgee described his ordeal in his
  133. 4:272010 autobiography
  134. 4:29left for dead he said that there had
  135. 4:31been three men
  136. 4:32sitting on the roadside who had run out
  137. 4:34of gas and that he had offered to give
  138. 4:36one of them
  139. 4:37a lift to a gas station mcgee posited
  140. 4:40that possibly uh he could have been
  141. 4:43stabbed
  142. 4:44with a drug syringe during struggle
  143. 4:46either way mcgee later recalled feeling
  144. 4:48increasingly dazed and confused and then
  145. 4:51he blacked out
  146. 4:52before he recovered consciousness hours
  147. 4:54later he also said that his attackers
  148. 4:56did not leave him immediately
  149. 4:58they overpowered and stunned him he
  150. 5:01later awoke in their camp
  151. 5:02they had a gun he said but they never
  152. 5:04used it they
  153. 5:05brought him water after an unknown
  154. 5:07period these carjackers
  155. 5:09lifted camp and they disappeared but
  156. 5:11before they left they stole his shoes
  157. 5:13and left him with uh the 12 and 30 cents
  158. 5:17which had been in his pocket the sydney
  159. 5:19morning herald suggested
  160. 5:20uh that there were some doubts over
  161. 5:22elements of the account
  162. 5:24and reported that mcgee was attempting
  163. 5:27to sell his story
  164. 5:28to a commercial television station it
  165. 5:30was also reported that the police too
  166. 5:32initially had doubts about the story
  167. 5:34because of mcgee's
  168. 5:35previous minor drug convictions
  169. 5:38mcgee denied allegations that his
  170. 5:40account was in any way misleading and
  171. 5:42even offered to appear live on
  172. 5:44television and
  173. 5:44eat frogs to prove he was telling the
  174. 5:46truth abc radio reported that
  175. 5:49mcgee had told his story to them for
  176. 5:51free
  177. 5:52although only after trying
  178. 5:53unsuccessfully to
  179. 5:55to persuade the station to match a
  180. 5:57fifteen thousand dollar offer
  181. 5:59he said he had received from elsewhere
  182. 6:01the doctor who treated mcgee and darwin
  183. 6:03commented that it was very difficult to
  184. 6:05either deny or validate his story
  185. 6:08as he said he he was a mess when he came
  186. 6:11in but he had also responded so well to
  187. 6:13the treatment provided by dietitians
  188. 6:15nutritionists and
  189. 6:16physicians an expert on outback survival
  190. 6:20acknowledged that mcgee's survival was
  191. 6:22not as surprising as
  192. 6:23one might think it was possible he said
  193. 6:26to survive in the bush for up to three
  194. 6:27years
  195. 6:28and that there are some areas where it's
  196. 6:30difficult to survive and
  197. 6:31others where you can for example the
  198. 6:33area where mcgee was he described as dry
  199. 6:36country which
  200. 6:37is you know pretty severe country there
  201. 6:40other survival experts credit mcgee's
  202. 6:42survival on his instinct for solving the
  203. 6:45basic requirements of water
  204. 6:46food and shelter and also adopting a
  205. 6:48survival mindset that helped pull him
  206. 6:51through
  207. 6:51although it is a very interesting story
  208. 6:53and the condition
  209. 6:54uh he was in when he was found seems to
  210. 6:57point to him having really survived an
  211. 6:59extreme situation
  212. 7:00i guess we will never know in his book
  213. 7:02he describes how he
  214. 7:05says he managed to survive in such
  215. 7:06conditions
  216. 7:08well that's it for today uh leave us a
