  1. 0:00Hey guys, this is Jeff here and welcome
  2. 0:01back to Runner G. I have the Altra Torin
  3. 0:049 here. This shoe's got a lot of updates
  4. 0:06here including this Vibram outsole here
  5. 0:09first on a road shoe. Needless to say
  6. 0:12that the traction on here, you know, is
  7. 0:14most likely going to be very, very good.
  8. 0:16And they're making sure they let you
  9. 0:18know cuz it's right here on the front of
  10. 0:19the shoe. On both the left and the right
  11. 0:22one right there. There you can't miss
  12. 0:23it. Vibram makes very good outsoles and
  13. 0:25it's going to be obviously it's going to
  14. 0:27be good on here. So moving on to the mid
  15. 0:28sole here, you have a two density P 35X
  16. 0:32mid sole here material. Good cushioning,
  17. 0:35soft but bouncy, not over springy but
  18. 0:38kind of fleshy cushy. Again, this is a
  19. 0:40daily trainer and get mileage in
  20. 0:42everyday training. And so what's nice
  21. 0:45though is you got a two density foam
  22. 0:47here. So as opposed to on the previous
  23. 0:49Torin, you just had a single density
  24. 0:51foam here. Now you have a dual density,
  25. 0:53you have a softer foam down the middle
  26. 0:54and a more stable foam around the edges.
  27. 0:57So really great design. I believe it's
  28. 0:59been around for a long time. I believe
  29. 1:00New Balance did it years ago on shoes
  30. 1:02called Encap and so they you had like a
  31. 1:04softer foam down the middle and then it
  32. 1:06encapsulated around a firmer foam around
  33. 1:08the perimeter. It's a great design. It
  34. 1:10works really well. A lot of shoe brands
  35. 1:11do it. Because of this great design on
  36. 1:14here on that mid sole, they were
  37. 1:15actually able to lower the mid sole here
  38. 1:17and still give you very good cushioning.
  39. 1:19So they actually lowered it down from a
  40. 1:2130 mm stack height on here. This is the
  41. 1:24Torin 8, you had a 30 and 30. They were
  42. 1:27actually able to lower the this down to
  43. 1:30a 28. So you got a little bit lower
  44. 1:32profile. A lot of people been asking for
  45. 1:34that. Shoes getting too big and thick
  46. 1:35and fluffy. You got a lower profile
  47. 1:37design here. So really nice on there.
  48. 1:39Cushioning felt feels very good. That's
  49. 1:41the mid sole on here. So nice update on
  50. 1:44that as well. Moving on to the upper, I
  51. 1:46think this is where there's the least
  52. 1:47amount of change. It seems to be very
  53. 1:49similar to the Torin 8, but I will have
  54. 1:51to say the Torin 8 had a little bit of
  55. 1:53thing of this kind of pucker. I I know
  56. 1:55if you can see it. The light right in
  57. 1:56here it kind of puckered. You can kind
  58. 1:58of see it in here. So, this looks a lot
  59. 2:00more plush a flush. This is look much
  60. 2:03more fitted in here. I don't know if
  61. 2:04it's going to be tight on some people on
  62. 2:06the upper here or not, but it definitely
  63. 2:08looks much more fitted and less kind of
  64. 2:10blousy up in here. Some shoes have been
  65. 2:12coming up blousy. This looks very good.
  66. 2:14Now, what is missing on here is there's
  67. 2:16no pull tab on the back. I kind of like
  68. 2:18my shark fin pull tab on the back. Makes
  69. 2:20it a lot easier to get the shoes on and
  70. 2:22off. So, that's kind of missing, but it
  71. 2:23does look kind of cleaner. Some people
  72. 2:25don't like the look of that. So, it does
  73. 2:26look kind of a little more classic and
  74. 2:28clean in the back. But, other than that,
  75. 2:30it's got a nice padded tongue here, not
  76. 2:32overly padded, certainly not thick. Nice
  77. 2:34about the same feeling as the previous
  78. 2:36one here. Comes out under 10 oz, about
  79. 2:39the same weight than the previous one.
  80. 2:41Still stays at 160 on the price, at
  81. 2:43least for right now. Looks like it to be
  82. 2:45a nice update from Altra, the the Torin
  83. 2:479 here. So, now a couple of things. Now,
  84. 2:49if you want a you don't want a zero
  85. 2:52drop, you want a a little bit of a heel
  86. 2:54lift, or you just want a more responsive
  87. 2:55shoe, a little I think a little more
  88. 2:57responsive feeling shoe is the Variance
  89. 2:59Flow from Altra. This is going to have a
  90. 3:014-mm drop. It's also going to have a
  91. 3:03nitrogen mid-sole here. So, a little
  92. 3:04more springy, a little more energy
  93. 3:06feeling, and and a little bit more of a
  94. 3:08snug fit in here. But, I think really
  95. 3:10the big thing is if you just don't
  96. 3:11really want a a zero drop shoe like on
  97. 3:13the Torin here, you do have that option
  98. 3:15of this shoe from Altra, which has got
  99. 3:17that 4-mm and a little I think a little
  100. 3:19more of a energetic type shoe for doing
  101. 3:21more tempo type runs. Now, on the flip
  102. 3:23side, if you're doing more of like
  103. 3:25walking or jogging, slower pace, you
  104. 3:27maybe want a little more stability, you
  105. 3:29also have a 4-mm drop on this Via
  106. 3:32Forward 2 from Altra, but you get this
  107. 3:34much wider platform. You can see big old
  108. 3:37wide platform in here compared to like
  109. 3:39on the Torin here or on that uh
  110. 3:41Experience Flow. This is great for
  111. 3:43walking. I really I really prefer this
  112. 3:45wider platform on here. Also, it's got
  113. 3:48really good traction on here. It doesn't
  114. 3:49have that Vibram out-sole uh on the
  115. 3:52Torin, but this has been really good on
  116. 3:54some light trails. So, if you wanted a
  117. 3:57shoe that you can use on the road and
  118. 3:58the trail a little bit, that's been
  119. 3:59really good. That's the Via Forward 2
  120. 4:01from Altra. A little bit more expensive,
  121. 4:04I think, but not much. This again, I
  122. 4:05think will be fine on trail, depending
  123. 4:07on the trail, as long as it's more of a
  124. 4:08fire road, you know, again, it's not a
  125. 4:10trail shoe, it's a road shoe, but it
  126. 4:12does have that Vibram Vibram written on
  127. 4:14here, right here on the toe, in case you
  128. 4:16forgot, it's right there. It'll be on
  129. 4:18both shoes, left and the right one, by
  130. 4:20the way. Anyway, uh another good shoe
  131. 4:22from a different brand is this Phantom 4
  132. 4:25from Topo. This has been out for a
  133. 4:26little while now, but it's still really
  134. 4:29great. Has that nice natural shape toe
  135. 4:31box. You do get a 5 mm heel drop.
  136. 4:34Cushioning is very similar, maybe a
  137. 4:36little bit softer feeling, and you got a
  138. 4:38very similar platform on here.
  139. 4:42I got to say, I really like the the look
  140. 4:44of the platform on this shoe. It's just
  141. 4:45a little bit wider, but not too bad.
  142. 4:47Comes in around that 150 price range,
  143. 4:49but it's a great shoe from Topo, as
  144. 4:51well. One of the best fitting shoes I've
  145. 4:53ever tried on. It's really nice. Uh so,
  146. 4:55definitely keep that in mind. Anyway,
  147. 4:57this is the Altra Torin 9 from Altra, uh
  148. 5:00and it's a nice update. I think this is
  149. 5:02going to do very, very well for them.
  150. 5:04Definitely something to keep at it. I
  151. 5:06think my least favorite thing on this
  152. 5:07shoe, and I keep kind of poking fun at
  153. 5:09it.
  154. 5:10I have to say,
  155. 5:13you got to get rid of that. No one wants
  156. 5:15Vibram written on the front of their
  157. 5:16toe. So, again, I'm poking fun out of
  158. 5:19it, but seriously, I don't know who
  159. 5:21thought of it. I would not have done
  160. 5:22that. I think that's going to actually
  161. 5:23hurt the shoe for some people. I already
  162. 5:25get complaints from people who, if the
  163. 5:27shoe is orange and comes up in the
  164. 5:29front, or color, they don't want that
  165. 5:32they don't like seeing this, and this is
  166. 5:35like, you know, sticking out in the
  167. 5:36front in some yellow color, or orange,
  168. 5:39or something. Having this written on
  169. 5:40here, I know I'm joking around, but it's
  170. 5:43not going to do well. I can tell you
  171. 5:45there's going to be people who don't
  172. 5:46want to walk around with this written on
  173. 5:48the front. So, anyway, that's really
  174. 5:49probably my only real gripe with this
  175. 5:51shoe. Otherwise, I think it's going to
  176. 5:53be a great shoe and I don't think this
  177. 5:54would be tough to fix. They could easily
  178. 5:56just change the color of this to black.
  179. 5:58I think this is more than enough, but I
  180. 6:00think I would change this thing to black
  181. 6:03or color match it. People are not going
  182. 6:05to want this. So, anyway, enough on
  183. 6:06that. Thanks for watching. This has been
  184. 6:09Jeff here at Runner G and I'll see you
  185. 6:11on the next video. In the meantime, keep
  186. 6:13on moving. See you in the next video.
  187. 6:15Thanks for watching. Bye-bye.
