- 0:00Hey guys, welcome to the video. Thanks
- 0:02for joining. Today I'm going to do my
- 0:04full review after a little over 50 miles
- 0:07on the Ultra Touring 9. I've been trying
- 0:10to get in my 50 miles in these pretty
- 0:12quickly because there's a lot of people
- 0:14that want comparisons to other shoes.
- 0:17I've just gone a little over 50 miles. I
- 0:19wanted to do my general overall review
- 0:21on today's and then I'll make follow-up
- 0:24videos with specific comparisons to
- 0:26other shoes. The Ultra Torren 9 I think
- 0:30was a major upgrade for Altra on the
- 0:34Torin series. I've been a Torin wearer
- 0:37for several years. I think I ran in
- 0:39version 1.5. Then I ran in the four, the
- 0:424.5 Plush, the Torren five, the one that
- 0:46cut into your ankle, the six where they
- 0:50softened it a little bit, the seven, the
- 0:53eight, and now the nine.
- 0:57The original Torren I think had like a
- 0:5926 millimeter stack height in the heel.
- 1:0226 millimeters throughout. They went in
- 1:05up to a 28 mm stack height around
- 1:08version five. I believe it's either four
- 1:11or five
- 1:14and a half or five. And then they also
- 1:18transitioned
- 1:19from
- 1:21they had a regular EVA midsole through
- 1:23four 4.5. They had a Quantic midsole
- 1:27which was still an EVA based foam. I
- 1:30guess they've all been EVA based until
- 1:34throughout. But in version five, they
- 1:37had their Ego Max,
- 1:39which is really version six, seven is
- 1:45where they went with the Ego Max. And
- 1:48but then they
- 1:51upped the stack height from 28 to 30 I
- 1:54think in version 7 with the Ego Max and
- 1:57that became a little bit too soft and
- 1:59squishy for me. But now the nine I'm
- 2:03sorry I may be off a little bit on my
- 2:05history but in the nine they have gone
- 2:08from that 30 mm stack height that was in
- 2:11the eight. They dropped it to 28, which
- 2:14was something I really like because it
- 2:17doesn't give you so much foam. And
- 2:19they've gone to their P35, their
- 2:21polyolifan elastimemer foam, which
- 2:24definitely has more rebound.
- 2:28The testing I have on most
- 2:32EVA foams is that they have like a 30%
- 2:36rebound whereas the POE, the poly olifan
- 2:38elastimemer, the P35 is more like in the
- 2:4260% rebound, 60s something% rebound
- 2:45categories from the research I've done.
- 2:48So it definitely feels more bouncy
- 2:50whereas the eight I felt like I was
- 2:52squishing down and didn't get enough
- 2:54rebound back. That is not the case. Now
- 2:56you got a little less stack height so
- 2:59you don't squeeze down as far. Plus this
- 3:01foam just bounces back further. Um
- 3:05they've gone to a dual density foam
- 3:08of this. So they're actually calling
- 3:10this the P35X which the dual density. It
- 3:13is a and you can feel it on foot. It is
- 3:17a little bit firmer foam along the
- 3:20outside of the shoe
- 3:23and then the inner core is softer and
- 3:26you can feel the softness.
- 3:29It still does give you some pretty good
- 3:30bounce. I like it.
- 3:33It's a vast improvement over the ride of
- 3:35the Torren 8. They retoled the upper
- 3:40some. It was a nice breathable upper in
- 3:42the eight. It still is in the nine. They
- 3:45definitely widened the lace
- 3:50the laces in the nine, which I think
- 3:54probably gives a little bit more
- 3:55adjustability.
- 3:57I'm not exactly sure why they made that
- 3:59change, but I've had no problems with it
- 4:01at all. The tongue is
- 4:04medium cushion tongue, but what they've
- 4:06done to it is they've made it really
- 4:09soft on the underside. So, I think if
- 4:11you wear these barefoot, it's going to
- 4:12be very comfortable.
- 4:15The cushion around the heel collar is
- 4:19nice and I'd say medium to high
- 4:22thickness. Probably medium. You still
- 4:25got some good structure to the heel
- 4:28counter.
- 4:31And then the huge upgrade that I think
- 4:33they made was they went to a V-bum
- 4:38excess Dura outsole. It's one of the
- 4:40first ever road outs soles from Vbram,
- 4:44but I have run I used to run in my old
- 4:47Merrill bare access that had a V-bum
- 4:50outsole. I guess they were meant for the
- 4:51trail, but it was a very light amount of
- 4:54cushion and I ran on them the roads. So,
- 4:57I do know that this is going to last
- 5:01longer and the grip is really good. Even
- 5:04walking around the running store, I
- 5:06could hear these shoes still are
- 5:07squeaking and I'm 50 miles in into these
- 5:11shoes. And I've run I have not really
- 5:14run in the rain yet in these, but I have
- 5:16run through some puddles and things like
- 5:19that. And it the grip is phenomenal. I'm
- 5:22really impressed by that. One of my
- 5:25things that I have not liked a lot about
- 5:28some of the Ultra outsoles is I felt
- 5:29like the rubber wore a little too
- 5:31quickly. Wasn't horrible. You're still
- 5:33going to get 300 350 miles in them, but
- 5:36you weren't going to go beyond that.
- 5:37These I think your outsole will not be
- 5:39the problem in going to 450 500 miles
- 5:44anyway. So,
- 5:46as far as the look goes, I do think they
- 5:49might have narrowed the heel a little
- 5:51bit, but I for my foot, it actually fits
- 5:54a little bit better through the midfoot.
- 5:58Some people with a really wide foot that
- 6:00go to Altra because of the wide foot may
- 6:02not like that. But for me, it feels
- 6:05really good.
- 6:07Anyway, I am impressed with the updates.
- 6:09Of all the things that I was starting
- 6:11not to like about the Torin series, this
- 6:13seemed to correct it. I really enjoy
- 6:16them on the run and I'm looking forward
- 6:18to doing more comparisons to some of the
- 6:20other shoes in my rotation. These will
- 6:23not be my only shoe because I like
- 6:26running between zero and six millimeter
- 6:27drop, but I do like doing some spending
- 6:31some time every week in some zero drop
- 6:33shoes. So, right now, my primary zero
- 6:36drop shoes will be these and the Magnify
- 6:386 from Topo. But anyway, those are my
- 6:41thoughts. Really enjoying the shoes so
- 6:44far.
- 6:46If you want to follow along and see some

- 7:02thoughts for today.
