Altra Experience Wild 3 Review | A Versatile Trail Running Shoe — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00So, I have been rocking the Experience
- 0:02Wild 2 for probably about a year now. I
- 0:05[music] do wear trail runners on a
- 0:06day-to-day basis myself. That's kind of
- 0:08just my footwear of choice, but I don't
- 0:11want [music] to destroy the lugs here on
- 0:13something like my Olympus or my Lone
- 0:15Peak because I want to utilize those on
- 0:17the trail. [music]
- 0:19And I'm I'm not as afraid to do that
- 0:21with the Experience Wild just because it
- 0:23isn't really my like hiker, but [music]
- 0:25it still performs. So, it's just for me
- 0:28been a really nice comfortable
- 0:30>> [music]
- 0:30>> daily driver. So, the Experience Wild 3
- 0:32is for the runner or hiker that wants to
- 0:36use a shoe in mixed terrain. You know,
- 0:38you can utilize this at some trails in
- 0:40national parks, some mountain trails,
- 0:42but fairly well-maintained trails. This
- 0:45is not going to be something that you're
- 0:46going to take out on a, you know, big
- 0:48rock high like high mountain pursuit.
- 0:51[music] It's not like the Olympus 275.
- 0:54It's not like any of the Arc'teryx Sylan
- 0:57or any of those reviews that we've done.
- 0:59If you want a shoe that's like a
- 1:00>> [music]
- 1:01>> heavy performance shoe, definitely check
- 1:03some of those other videos that we've
- 1:05put out in the recent past. This is not
- 1:07that shoe, but it does handle trail
- 1:10really well. So, right away something
- 1:12that I've noticed about this shoe is
- 1:14that it feels like pretty balanced,
- 1:16pretty roomy, pretty good [music]
- 1:18cushion under foot. It's not that full
- 1:21zero drop that you get in something like
- 1:23the Lone Peak or the Olympus. [music]
- 1:25It is that 4-mm drop from the back to
- 1:28the front. So, it's kind of like a
- 1:30training shoe to get you into a zero
- 1:33drop shoe. Um you know, that zero drop
- 1:35keeps you flat on the ground, lets you
- 1:36feel everything under your foot. This is
- 1:38not that, but it is pretty dang close.
- 1:41Uh this also has Altra's ultra-wide
- 1:44roomy toe box here, which is nice to
- 1:46allow your toes to splay out and kind of
- 1:48do their thing. You know, our feet
- 1:49aren't supposed to be locked up like
- 1:51this. They're supposed to be all spread
- 1:52out. And that's the whole philosophy
- 1:54behind what Altra is doing. With that,
- 1:56you know, we talked a little bit about
- 1:58this is a trail running shoe, but kind
- 2:00of a soft comfortable cushioning trail
- 2:02running shoe. So, you can see here it
- 2:03comes with that Ego P35 foam, which is
- 2:07just like a nice upgrade and over
- 2:09[music] the last model, the two. It's a
- 2:11little bit soft and cushiony. It feels
- 2:13pretty nice under your foot, but it does
- 2:15provide a lot of support, too. So, like
- 2:17this shoe is not going to like really
- 2:19give out super [music] fast on you. So,
- 2:21it is a good bang for your buck because
- 2:23of that. The rubber will last you a
- 2:24while. And then you do have that MaxTrac
- 2:26Max Track [music] rubber underfoot with
- 2:29some pretty solid lugs. So, again, this
- 2:31can handle a lot of trail miles for
- 2:33sure. This shoe is a 4-mm drop shoe, so
- 2:37it has a 32-mm stack height in the back
- 2:39and a 28-mm stack height right here in
- 2:41the front. So, it does a good job of
- 2:44keeping your heel a little bit elevated
- 2:46to [music] do that thing that
- 2:48propels you forward. Again, so it is
- 2:50going to take a little bit of that work
- 2:51off of your posterior chain, which is
- 2:53pretty nice. So, the upper on this shoe
- 2:56has also been updated. So, it comes with
- 2:58a stronger mesh and a really nice toe
- 3:00box here. You can kind of see it
- 3:02outlined with that stiffer rubber in the
- 3:04front. And that does a good job of
- 3:06stopping blowouts from occurring and
- 3:08gives you a nice bit of protection if
- 3:10you do bump your foot on any rocks or
- 3:12trees. Um so, yeah, those are some of
- 3:13the specs that make this shoe so
- 3:15comfortable. I mean, those are some nice
- 3:17updates that we've seen since the two.
- 3:19If you like what we're doing on this
- 3:20channel, make sure you subscribe.
- 3:23Thank you. Now, let's talk about some of
- 3:25the tradeoffs. You know, maybe not
- 3:27really cons, but what does this shoe
- 3:29give away? [music] So, it is a good
- 3:30price point shoe, but that's because
- 3:32it's not really a shoe with any sort of
- 3:34specialization. Like I've said several
- 3:36times throughout this video, [music]
- 3:37it's just kind of a middle of the line
- 3:39shoe that's not really great at any one
- 3:41thing. Um it's [music] not like it's not
- 3:44a big mountain trail runner. It's not
- 3:46meant for playing around in the water
- 3:48too much. It's not meant for road
- 3:49running, for gravel running.
- 3:51>> [music]
- 3:51>> But, it does all of those things very
- 3:54good, just not [music] very great. So,
- 3:57you're giving up specialization for a
- 4:00shoe that just does a little bit of
- 4:02[music] everything. And then, obviously,
- 4:04if you are a long-time Altra shoe fan,
- 4:07just remember this is not a zero drop
- 4:10shoe. So, if you're looking for that,
- 4:13this ain't it. A good comparison for
- 4:15this Experience [music]
- 4:16Wild 3 is something like the Hoka
- 4:18Challenger. You know, some major
- 4:20differences between this shoe and the
- 4:23Challenger is, of course, that, you
- 4:25know, ultra-wide toe box that we've got
- 4:28right here. That's probably the most
- 4:29important thing. It's got a more natural
- 4:32platform, [music] you know, not with
- 4:33that zero drop, but with the 4-mil drop,
- 4:36so a lot less. I would say if you have a
- 4:40>> [music]
- 4:40>> narrower foot and want something with a
- 4:43larger stack height to kind of
- 4:45>> [music]
- 4:45>> give you that propulsion forward, maybe
- 4:48check out the Challenger. But, if you
- 4:49just want something a little bit easier
- 4:51[music] underfoot that makes you feel
- 4:53closer to the ground with a roomier toe
- 4:55box,
- 4:56maybe check out the Experience Wild.
- 4:58[music] And then, again, compared to the
- 4:59Experience Wild 2, there's not any
- 5:01design changes at all. It's just all
- 5:04about materials, materials, materials.
- 5:06It's [music] just better rubber, better
- 5:08upper. Everything about it is just
- 5:11giving you more protection, so it's more
- 5:13useful [music] for a longer period of
- 5:14time. So, just a beefier Experience Wild
- 5:172. [music]
- 5:18So, if you like that shoe, it fit well,
- 5:20this is a safe choice for you. So, all
- 5:22in all, great shoe, great all-around
- 5:24shoe. Does a really good job in a
- 5:26variety of situations, but does not
- 5:28>> [music]
- 5:28>> handle one specific type of terrain
- 5:31better than anything else. So, if you're
- 5:33just looking for a shoe that's good at
- 5:35everything, definitely check out this
