- 0:09>> Yeah,
- 0:15>> there we are. There we are.
- 0:16>> Welcome back everyone. Thanks a million
- 0:17for rejoining us here at Croak Park. Can
- 0:20we get a big warm welcome once again for
- 0:22Kieran McGini, everyone?
- 0:25[applause]
- 0:28A big welcome back to Patty Andrews.
- 0:30[applause]
- 0:33>> And a big hello once again to James
- 0:35Adonah who
- 0:39[laughter]
- 0:39Carrie Crowder in. Baby,
- 0:41>> should we move off the hand passing the
- 0:43ball over the bar subject or do you have
- 0:45any final thoughts, James?
- 0:47>> Ah, come on, James. You're up on stage
- 0:48now, buddy.
- 0:51>> Are we actually going back there again?
- 0:56>> [laughter]
- 0:57>> Okay. My point on the fisted point is
- 0:59that
- 1:02not necessarily that you should go for
- 1:04goal every time.
- 1:06>> It's some are allowed.
- 1:07>> What's that?
- 1:08>> So, some are allowed.
- 1:10>> No, we b them all.
- 1:11>> You said not every time.
- 1:13>> All not everyone is a goal, but it would
- 1:15make you shoot as a corner forward from
- 1:17tighter angles. And I think the crowd
- 1:19would appreciate those scores a lot
- 1:21more.
- 1:22>> Okay. If I asked you, did the crowd
- 1:23always appreciate it when you missed?
- 1:26>> If you missed
- 1:27>> when you missed.
- 1:28>> Yeah, but that's the challenge then to
- 1:30get good enough
- 1:31>> to not miss.
- 1:32>> So why did you take a fisting point that
- 1:33time?
- 1:35>> Three of them by the way.
- 1:36>> Three in one match.
- 1:37>> He fisted three points in the moment.
- 1:39>> Because I It's in the
- 1:41>> Yeah. No, [laughter]
- 1:43>> it's okay when David does it, isn't it?
- 1:45>> It's in It's in the rules, so I can do
- 1:48it. But I would change it.
- 1:50>> That's [laughter] fair.
- 1:51>> That's fair. You're It's a game of
- 1:53opinions.
- 1:53>> Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:55>> It is. But look, it's not in the next
- 1:58list of rule changes, is it?
- 1:59>> I don't think so. Not what the next
- 2:01committee is working on anyway.
- 2:03>> But Patty, our 12-part series is coming
- 2:05out later this autumn. You can tune.
- 2:07>> But as well, Kieran made a good point
- 2:08where you look at old games and if you
- 2:10ever see um reeling in the ears and
- 2:13things and you see the goals being
- 2:15fisted in and you're like, "Fuck, they
- 2:17don't it doesn't look great." Like I
- 2:19reckon 20 years time if we were to get
- 2:20rid of the fist of point and we look
- 2:22back at it you'll be saying Jesus that
- 2:25looks good.
- 2:26>> I know but we do that with everything.
- 2:27>> Huh?
- 2:28>> We do that with everything. [laughter]
- 2:30>> I know. I know we do.
- 2:31>> Patty that point he fisted with the
- 2:33Legion was from about 30 yards.
- 2:34>> I know. Yeah. Well, that happens when
- 2:36you get old and you've no pace anymore
- 2:37as well.
- 2:39>> Play that clip again. There was loads of
- 2:41pace in that. [laughter]
- 2:43>> It's nice to be back up actually, isn't
- 2:45it? Because
- 2:46>> honestly,
- 2:46>> we were sent into the ball corner there
- 2:47for 45 minutes.
- 2:49>> [ __ ] security was showing us out of
- 2:51our own show. [laughter] Like Jesus
- 2:52Christ.
- 2:53>> You can blame Donah for that one from
- 2:54last year.
- 2:55>> Can we come back in?
- 2:57>> No, it's great to be back up.
- 2:59>> It is. It is.
- 3:00>> Kieran, what's it like or what was it
- 3:01like having Kieran Donahe with you for
- 3:04those couple of years? He brought
- 3:05obviously plenty to the table.
- 3:07>> Yeah. Well, as we were speaking earlier
- 3:09on, the only thing is you just didn't
- 3:10want to go in the beer with him.
- 3:12[laughter]
- 3:15He he definitely he beat us all hands
- 3:17down on that one. No, Kieran was great
- 3:20having in like a brilliant coach, but
- 3:21he's a brilliant person to have around
- 3:22the place. Like I would have felt like
- 3:23we we would a good setup there with uh
- 3:26Kier McKver and Colin Gilligan Bug
- 3:30Dennis you know Kier McKenna like Julian
- 3:32we had a really good group and like it
- 3:34was good crack. The only thing he always
- 3:35sort of said was that like um he put on
- 3:38a bit three stone on it like management
- 3:40meetings all bring in biscuits and cake
- 3:41cuz they know why I love sugar. I think
- 3:43I'm a we bit softer but like you know um
- 3:46so Dan reckon he put on a bit but three
- 3:48stone in the the the four or five years
- 3:49he was coming up the road. No, he was he
- 3:52was a brilliant character. He was like
- 3:53in his coaching abilities top class.
- 3:55brings a different perspective to us and
- 3:57uh I I do think like half what he brings
- 4:00is his character and his ability to to
- 4:02sort of mingle in and you the first you
- 4:04had a tough opening week with us like
- 4:06but
- 4:07>> Oh yeah.
- 4:08>> Yeah. Like um just sort of an acquired
- 4:10taste. So on one of the nights we were
- 4:13training like one of the things
- 4:14happened. It was a bit of backwards and
- 4:15forwards and we were biting a bit at
- 4:16each other and it was probably the first
- 4:18time he'd seen that outside of football
- 4:20like you know cuz as you seen a of
- 4:23strong opinion so you have to be able to
- 4:24argue your point and Ken just wasn't
- 4:26used to that like in his first time. So
- 4:28but he rang Brookie on the way down the
- 4:30road and he says [ __ ] me. He says like
- 4:32McKini is going to get rid of me here.
- 4:33He think I'm going to jump in the lake.
- 4:35So we keep rang me and he goes ring that
- 4:38bell. He's just not used to you. So I
- 4:39rang him and I says you're all right. He
- 4:40says, "Ah, listen. I'm sorry about
- 4:41that." I go, "Sorry, but what?" I just
- 4:43to say, "That's what you're there for."
- 4:45He says, "If I wanted people to say
- 4:46yes," I said, "Just keep myself here."
- 4:48Like, so that's all right. He says,
- 4:50"Yeah, that's what you're here for." Oh,
- 4:52great. So, [laughter]
- 4:55[gasps] so like he he stuck to his word
- 4:57in plenty of arguments over the years
- 4:58like, but uh no, I was say it was it was
- 5:01a rough week.
- 5:01>> You never had the brain wave of using
- 5:03him as a water boy.
- 5:05>> In what regard now? Like as in
- 5:07>> Well, he's the official water boy now,
- 5:08isn't he? Technically speaking. Oh, is
- 5:11that is that a bad one? Like I like
- 5:12listen Ken can be heard. That's another
- 5:15thing. Like when he's on the sideline,
- 5:16he can um like he
- 5:17>> But it's effective.
- 5:18>> Yeah. Listen, there's so many rules
- 5:20around the stuff when you do in the
- 5:22sideline. We can't see the stuff on the
- 5:23bloody pitch, but we can see when the
- 5:25manager steps over that bloody box. Like
- 5:26what is the in my life? Three edges over
- 5:28the box. Hey, you're not allowed outside
- 5:30that. What's the bridge? You know, so
- 5:33it's [laughter]
- 5:37or square ball is it? [laughter]
- 5:41So like honestly people have no idea the
- 5:44amount of arguments get in on the
- 5:45sideline and it has nothing to do with
- 5:47the game you know like you know like
- 5:50what boys can't have earpieces in like
- 5:52cuz be sending really secret messages to
- 5:54the players like telling them how to
- 5:55play you know like the coach behind you
- 5:57has to sit down cuz he can't talk to you
- 6:00either and just so many different rules
- 6:02like that doesn't seem really that sort
- 6:04of important like to what's going on in
- 6:06the pitch. What do you think his actual
- 6:08contribution is to Kerry this year?
- 6:10Because people jump to the conclusion
- 6:11that because he was a player who got on
- 6:13the end of direct ball, he would be
- 6:15encouraging that as a coach. Is is that
- 6:17the truth or what's he actually
- 6:18bringing?
- 6:19>> Much more like the coaching has changed
- 6:21dramatically, you know, in terms of what
- 6:23you do. It's it's more about the
- 6:24management skills like and that's
- 6:26probably where he's at his best. Um, but
- 6:29Kane's not afraid to call stuff out like
- 6:30he he sees things. He's very meticulous
- 6:32in his video work. um you know like
- 6:36there's no parts of it now that like I
- 6:38don't think coaches really aren't up to
- 6:40speed in like everything that he would
- 6:41see like on his huddle like he'd be
- 6:43transferring it to the players who' be
- 6:44calling players out for watching this uh
- 6:46like where they stand like on the press
- 6:48what they're doing when they give the
- 6:49ball like getting the ball inside like
- 6:51is is an easy thing to do like if you
- 6:54have somebody can win it. It's like the
- 6:5695 other things that like he would be
- 6:58watching out for as well. So he's
- 6:59meticulous in what he does and he puts a
- 7:01[snorts] lot of effort into it. Like you
- 7:03know the coaching nowadays like the
- 7:05amount of hours those fellas put into
- 7:06video work even when they get a tag like
- 7:08it's phenomenal. Like I would imagine
- 7:10most like know most coaches are like s
- 7:13hitting probably 15 16 hours a week
- 7:16video work like because they keep going
- 7:17over it like in the be with the players
- 7:19doing all that sort of stuff.
- 7:21>> It would that be year specification or
- 7:24would other counties generally have a
- 7:25somebody who would go through all the
- 7:26video work? you like to do it yourselves
- 7:28like
- 7:28>> yeah the tagging part's the easy part
- 7:29like it's then like it's you
- 7:31transferring that to the players like
- 7:32you don't even maybe have two 15 two 20
- 7:34minute sessions maybe a video probably a
- 7:36week with the players but there'll be a
- 7:37lot of individual stuff and coaches you
- 7:40have to give them the space to go and do
- 7:41their own thing as well
- 7:43>> Patty that that point on regenerating a
- 7:45backroom team is such an interesting one
- 7:48like Jack Oconor last year brought in
- 7:50Keen O'Neal and then he added Kieran
- 7:51Donahe this year it's slightly
- 7:53reminiscent of the the dubs in 2023 in
- 7:55terms of bringing Gil Roy back into the
- 7:57mix and and that had as much of an
- 7:59impact on the pitch as some of the
- 8:00players coming back in 23 as well.
- 8:02>> Yeah, I think any group you need to have
- 8:05a freshness and an edge to it as well.
- 8:07Particularly if a team has been it work
- 8:10both ways, but a team has been
- 8:11successful, you need to find a way to
- 8:14and particularly in that Dublin group
- 8:16where guys won five, six, seven, all
- 8:18Ireland
- 8:19winning an eight even though it might
- 8:21sound mightn't rock their boat as much.
- 8:23You need something else to kind of go
- 8:24well why are we doing this? cuz it to
- 8:26reach the the top of the mountain, you
- 8:28have to sacrifice everything. You know,
- 8:30it has to be your be all and end all and
- 8:32that mental side of freshness and that
- 8:34edge that you need to have. It might be
- 8:36new players. It might be younger players
- 8:37coming in and all of a sudden the the
- 8:40sacred kills who've been guaranteed
- 8:41starters, they're under pressure and
- 8:43that brings an extra training or it
- 8:44might be in the back room team and we've
- 8:45seen it with Kerry, someone like Donnie
- 8:47and his personality that just gives a
- 8:50little boost to everyone and the
- 8:52margins, believe it or not, between the
- 8:54the top teams at this level. There's not
- 8:56a whole pile between. They're usually
- 8:57going to be pretty fit as Kieran has
- 8:59said, like a lot of the tactical work is
- 9:01going to be done, the video analysis,
- 9:03all that type of thing. It might just be
- 9:04that little bit of freshness that keeps
- 9:08things creates that little bit of edge
- 9:10that something different. And someone
- 9:12like Giller for Dublin in 2023, anyone
- 9:14who knows him, his personality um
- 9:19Mindon I was beginning about like he'd
- 9:21pull no punches like and he would he
- 9:23would have made it his business to go
- 9:24after the so-called stars of that team
- 9:26as well and really like are you happy
- 9:29enough with what you've won to date
- 9:30because I wouldn't be that type of
- 9:32thing. Um, and
- 9:33>> does that still work? You know, Kieran's
- 9:35talking about the 90s there's doing
- 9:37that.
- 9:37>> Well, you seen Michael Jordan, you know,
- 9:39I took that personally. You can't all
- 9:41the
- 9:43uh sports science and Caroline Curr last
- 9:46week and a lot of credit with with the
- 9:48the Limick hurlers and things like that.
- 9:49All the advancements in nutrition and
- 9:52training and all that type of thing.
- 9:54It's hard to just beat an ill chip on
- 9:56the shoulder. No matter how what level
- 9:58of sport you're in or how talented a
- 10:00player might be, there's no harm in
- 10:02giving someone a little kick in the hole
- 10:03and saying, "Well, they're actually not
- 10:04that good." It makes such a huge
- 10:06difference. And maybe Andy Morton might
- 10:09be dipping into that side of things as
- 10:11well on Sunday going, "These lads, no
- 10:13one [ __ ] thinks you're going to win
- 10:14this thing. Everyone thinks Kerry are
- 10:15better than you." Like, we're all human.
- 10:17like that is someone tells you you can't
- 10:19do something if you're an elite sports
- 10:22person which these guys are and which
- 10:23that Dublin team in 2023 was like that's
- 10:26a red rag to a bull. So it can't be the
- 10:29only thing you can't just rely on it
- 10:31might get you over the line once or
- 10:32twice but you can't have consistent
- 10:34success by just everyone thinking I'm
- 10:36going to prove people wrong but it is a
- 10:38powerful tool that freshness and that
- 10:40edge and yeah we'll see on Sunday maybe
- 10:42that's being used in down in Castlebar.
- 10:45I think that was a good thing that Kerry
- 10:46did this year. Obviously, there's no
- 10:48transfer market with players or, you
- 10:50know, it's hard to freshen up the squad
- 10:53and get new energy into to a team unless
- 10:56obviously with the 20s coming in is is
- 10:59something, but they're still maybe a
- 11:00year or two off. But Kerry brought
- 11:02Donnie in straight away and he was by
- 11:05far the best teammate that I ever had.
- 11:08And I could see what he could give to a
- 11:11team because he's positive, he's
- 11:13energetic. if you were if you were maybe
- 11:16dropped or pushed aside, he'd somehow
- 11:18spin it positively and make you still
- 11:20feel good about your role. And I I think
- 11:24that was a very powerful addition by by
- 11:26Kerry to get him in just for that fresh
- 11:28voice.
- 11:29>> When did when did Carie come into the
- 11:31setup?
- 11:32>> Huh?
- 11:32>> When did when did they get the
- 11:33reflection? [laughter]
- 11:36>> The year after Goff went in with G, I
- 11:37think. Oh.
- 11:42>> [applause]
- 11:45>> Guys, you're going to have to tell me
- 11:46the secret about getting referees on
- 11:48your side. [laughter]
- 11:51>> What about umpires? Huh?
- 11:56>> Am I joking? Uh the um the the point on
- 12:00Donahe like you were talking about the
- 12:02fact that you know you put a rocket up a
- 12:04lad the the threat of losing their place
- 12:06and all that is is an important one but
- 12:07but it feels that maybe Kerry might be
- 12:10motivating themselves with the positive
- 12:11angle of potentially going back to back
- 12:13this year. James I'm not sure if the
- 12:14stick has been used too much. It's more
- 12:16of a a carrot situation this year.
- 12:17>> No I I I do think the backto-back thing
- 12:20is really really powerful. Um I remember
- 12:23in in 15 we got back to the final and I
- 12:27it's like a validation he obviously got
- 12:29back to the back to final as well. It's
- 12:30like a validation of a really brilliant
- 12:32team if you were to go back to back. We
- 12:34obviously didn't but like it's such a
- 12:37rubber stamp of being a great team if
- 12:39you do manage to go back to back. I
- 12:40think it's an incredible achievement. Um
- 12:42because obviously there's so much
- 12:45hysteria and you know pats on the back
- 12:47and Jesus he won it whatever to come
- 12:49back again straight away and do it again
- 12:51is a great sign of a team. So I think
- 12:53they have tapped into that. Um and I
- 12:55think that Jack the fact that Jack never
- 12:57did it even though he had a couple of
- 12:59great teams in the naughties. I think
- 13:00that was is a big motivating factor for
- 13:02him.
- 13:02>> Kieran you real stats earlier about how
- 13:05many all Irelands Dublin and Kerry have
- 13:06won in history and and it is stark. Does
- 13:09it great on you that you didn't go back
- 13:10to back as a player and as a manager?
- 13:13>> Yeah. Yeah, it does. Like and that's I
- 13:16think that's the secret in Kerry like
- 13:18you know like I look at Paul Guiny this
- 13:20year with 36 coming
- 13:21>> 36
- 13:22>> taped together like and he's coming back
- 13:23looking for a fourth
- 13:25>> car are obsessed about the next one the
- 13:26next one like it becomes a part of their
- 13:28psyche you know even like in joking you
- 13:31know like you're in the company like and
- 13:33so I remember being watching one of the
- 13:34the club games with D bomber was there
- 13:37and a few other boys and the slagging
- 13:39was going like where you could sit in
- 13:40the steps like cuz know if you nine
- 13:41others you could sit up here and if you
- 13:42had four you could sit down there and I
- 13:44said like it is a big thing like it's so
- 13:47when you have your superstars that
- 13:49aren't happy with three and four like
- 13:51whereas you know like myself were
- 13:54talking there know small county syndrome
- 13:55and like even talking like that like and
- 13:57that doesn't exist in those counties
- 14:00like they want four they want five and I
- 14:02know people here would find this hard to
- 14:04believe but most players don't want to
- 14:06win
- 14:08they would like to win
- 14:09>> what you mean
- 14:11>> wanting to win means everything goes in
- 14:14the line.
- 14:16There is no they fans or buts. Like you
- 14:18make decisions solely to get that. And I
- 14:21see that with different players and I
- 14:23can see it like cuz it's like sort of
- 14:24saying like everybody that turns up to
- 14:26work wants to do a good job. Like
- 14:29[laughter]
- 14:31>> I think the room has answered you there.
- 14:33Yeah.
- 14:33>> Yeah. So it's the same sort of thing
- 14:35like you know people are very good at
- 14:36what they do. They wouldn't get the job
- 14:37otherwise. That's the same in sport like
- 14:39and you know what I know people will
- 14:41push back and say of course they do but
- 14:43like once a funny thing like it's you
- 14:46make decisions like it it eats at you
- 14:48like it's you know when you have that
- 14:50type of talent and you're still coming
- 14:51back at 36 and like you're broke like in
- 14:54terms of physically like with Paul like
- 14:56has been like even for his club all year
- 14:57like to me that sends a message that you
- 15:00just you can't you can't see anything
- 15:03stronger than that like you cannot you
- 15:05can't put that into words. Tommy Tommy
- 15:08reckons an all-star nomination is
- 15:09winning.
- 15:10>> What?
- 15:11>> Tommy reckons once you get an All-Star
- 15:12nomination, you've won. He's been on
- 15:14about Allstar nominations all year and
- 15:16last year with me. [laughter] But there
- 15:18is there is I'm just I'm going to let
- 15:19that one go cuz there is a
- 15:23there there is a psychological thing
- 15:25with Kerry, too. And and it's not just
- 15:27the numbers, James. Like I love the
- 15:30story you tell of Johnny Cardy. He's a
- 15:33Legion club man, a legend who who's
- 15:34passed away recently. and I carry great
- 15:36back in the day, but when you were a
- 15:38young fellow breaking into that Kerry
- 15:39team
- 15:40like can you tell it because I don't
- 15:42know if you actually said it publicly. I
- 15:44know you said it one or two shows you've
- 15:45done elsewhere.
- 15:46>> Um well yeah Johnny Culty was obviously
- 15:49a legion a legion hero and a Kerry hero
- 15:51played in goals um played corner forward
- 15:54before that and managed Kerry um and he
- 15:58was our club so he was massive and I got
- 16:01on to the the Kerry panel because of
- 16:03him. He just said, "Will he take this
- 16:05fell in?" basically to Jack Oconor
- 16:07because he had Jack O'Connor's ear.
- 16:08>> Not so sure. You just
- 16:10>> I promise you that was actually how it
- 16:11went. And uh I was in there for a while
- 16:14and I wasn't making any inroads. And he
- 16:16goes, "Uh,
- 16:17>> sure. Who who who's a helio? Who's a
- 16:19helio?"
- 16:20>> And I said, "Gu, Don, Darren Sullivan,
- 16:24Declan Sullivan, and Donica Walsh."
- 16:26>> Galvin
- 16:27>> Galvin. And he goes, "Right, you're
- 16:30better than all them."
- 16:31>> [laughter]
- 16:32>> I was about half a stone overweight and
- 16:34just absolutely diabolical at the time.
- 16:36But like he just gave you that he gave
- 16:38you that confidence and then like I was
- 16:40so young and impressionable that not
- 16:42that I believe that at all but it was
- 16:45like someone maybe does think I'm
- 16:47actually decent and even those few words
- 16:49actually do make make a lot. But Don is
- 16:52a really really similar character.
- 16:54Honestly, if he said something to you
- 16:56that that lifted you up a bit, you you'd
- 16:58kind of believe it. Even if it was only
- 17:00>> Fugazi or it was to suit him.
- 17:02>> They actually have a word for Carrie.
- 17:04Like
- 17:04>> that was what
- 17:05>> have a word for that. Go on.
- 17:06>> Like it's plumbing. Like I learned that.
- 17:08So it is like they actually have a word
- 17:09for butter and yappa and make you feel
- 17:11better than you should do. Like
- 17:13>> that they're that good at it. Like
- 17:14[laughter]
- 17:15>> nobody ever feels bad and Curry were
- 17:17just plumsing each other constantly.
- 17:18Constantly one one up on each other. But
- 17:21when I look at David and you mentioned
- 17:23David Clifford earlier on and his best
- 17:25quality Kieran and I just look at
- 17:28Clifford now and whatever about what
- 17:30happens on the pitch and and the things
- 17:32he's doing are incredible and maybe we
- 17:33underestimate them
- 17:34>> but he understands the power of what
- 17:36he's doing too. The way he celebrates
- 17:38the way he doesn't let him even if he
- 17:40takes the worst penalty of all time that
- 17:41gets 10 million views on Twitter because
- 17:43soccer took it over. He celebrates that
- 17:46>> bloody goal as if he had scored a
- 17:48worldy. Well, I I think that is
- 17:50intentional.
- 17:51>> The he his leadership role
- 17:54>> even last season. Remember they were
- 17:55being well written off after that famous
- 17:57me victory. Tommy, which you dined out
- 17:59on,
- 18:00>> but after they beat Calvin,
- 18:02>> stand over what I said.
- 18:03>> They were playing the lads in the
- 18:04quarterfinal and everyone was tipping
- 18:05our mad around like the OAS were tipping
- 18:07our M at that time. Um and he called out
- 18:10the Kerry supporters. you know, if
- 18:11you're he's not the oldest guy in the
- 18:13team, but he's the most influential. And
- 18:15even for someone like Guini looking at
- 18:16him, he is the leader of that team and
- 18:19his when he's fronting up and against
- 18:21Dublin the other day and the Dublin
- 18:23supporters were a bit pissed off that he
- 18:24was maybe giving it the big one, but
- 18:26that's intentional as well. It was like
- 18:28I'm going to take this on my back and
- 18:29the best players technically he's
- 18:31incredible as we've alluded to.
- 18:34Physically, he's a beast as well. you
- 18:36know, he can take it both ways, but he's
- 18:40he's shown I'm going to take this all at
- 18:42on my stride. Like
- 18:43>> he's going to leave in front. So that's
- 18:45the celebration thing is
- 18:46>> how do you make him uncomfortable?
- 18:48>> I think every team has has played like
- 18:50maybe not you know to the same degree
- 18:52because they won't be noticed but like
- 18:53everybody needs those people to stand up
- 18:55and and push like like you know the like
- 18:58every team has their shepherds the ones
- 19:00that drive. We were lucky like we had
- 19:01Aiden Fork and Rory Grugan and Steven
- 19:03Sheron at the time and then like some of
- 19:04the younger fellas but now the new
- 19:06generation like you're trying to get
- 19:07them in the same way but like David has
- 19:11like I I've never you know been in like
- 19:14from a coaching capacity but you can see
- 19:16his one but Michael Murphy you see
- 19:17players Conor Kalin has it like you know
- 19:19you see them like James Mccarthy had it
- 19:21like you know you see those players that
- 19:23like they just they take the game and
- 19:25they drive like they they take their
- 19:27team over the line. Paul Flynn like you
- 19:29go through all of the great teams like
- 19:31to have them Galvin was the same like
- 19:32you know like they impose their will on
- 19:35the game like and it's it's a powerful
- 19:38>> it it gives huge confidence the rest of
- 19:40>> as a player
- 19:41>> to the other like with Dylan Gany as
- 19:43brilliant as a player would he be having
- 19:44the season he has if he hasn't got clear
- 19:46for him not to be Dylan Gene is a
- 19:48brilliant player but it
- 19:51>> it gives confidence to your teammates
- 19:52and the best players make their team
- 19:54>> I don't know who does it for me like
- 19:56he's half a size
- 19:58>> like But he he wants the ball. Like you
- 19:59don't see him shying away.
- 20:01>> Yeah.
- 20:01>> You know, like you looked at the first
- 20:02goal he hit against Loud like you know
- 20:04he didn't fest the point. [laughter]
- 20:06>> But hey, what that we forget there's an
- 20:09unbelievable there's a great kick pass,
- 20:10unbelievable flick by Kobe, but the
- 20:12finish is texture legs. Yeah, it's very
- 20:14>> but what I'm saying is like they're the
- 20:15sorts of players, you know, like they
- 20:17can and they come like in all different
- 20:19positions like on the pitch,
- 20:21>> but they're the players that I like cuz
- 20:23doesn't matter when it is, they just
- 20:24continue to impose their will on the
- 20:26game. I'm glad you brought up Mayo
- 20:28because we've done a lot of talking
- 20:29about Kerry tonight on
- 20:30>> Yeah. Like loads of Mayo jerseys in the
- 20:32crowd. How many Mayo people did we even
- 20:34ask to be on the show, Tommy?
- 20:35>> Oh, we asked Kieran McDonald.
- 20:38>> Said no.
- 20:40>> We asked Mickey Conroy. He's playing
- 20:42golf. [laughter]
- 20:43>> We asked James Horn.
- 20:45>> James Horn, what did he say?
- 20:46>> Didn't get back.
- 20:47>> Didn't get back.
- 20:50>> One of sent off and I think if anyone is
- 20:52a follower of John Cena or it was a
- 20:54close hanger from Waggara. Um,
- 20:56absolutely actors, man.
- 20:58>> I'm going to lose all my life.
- 20:59>> Oh my god.
- 21:02[laughter]
- 21:03I die happy, man.
- 21:05>> Who let David Brady in? That's David
- 21:07Brady's music.
- 21:09>> Say it. Steven Rogers has never spoken
- 21:10to me in his life.
- 21:13[laughter]
- 21:17>> Oh, look at this.
- 21:22[laughter]
- 21:23>> David, how's it going?
- 21:26Now he
- 21:28>> put on his mic. [laughter] If If you
- 21:30want to box, say you want to box.
- 21:36>> If you want to do punditry, say you want
- 21:37to do punditry. [laughter]
- 21:40>> David,
- 21:40>> I'm there for the last 55 minutes.
- 21:42Listen to the greatest load of
- 21:46one-sided. Hi Mike. Mike Frank Ros of
- 21:50bone to pick with Dubai. [laughter]
- 21:54>> You never text me back. [laughter]
- 21:57Anyway,
- 21:59Jesus, boys.
- 22:02>> Oh, that's [laughter]
- 22:03the car is a different story.
- 22:06>> Do Do you remember that, Kieran?
- 22:08>> Well, we road throwing coppers and he
- 22:09lost the car. He couldn't find it for
- 22:10two days after.
- 22:11>> I remember that night. All [laughter]
- 22:12right,
- 22:12>> that can happen.
- 22:13>> I I found it, but I just forgot where I
- 22:15parked it.
- 22:16>> Hop hop up on up on stage there, DB. Uh,
- 22:18question for you.
- 22:20>> Go on.
- 22:20>> May our courier are playing Mongolia on
- 22:22Sunday. Is it?
- 22:23>> That's it. [laughter]
- 22:26>> Jesus, boys.
- 22:28>> Get up here. Go, man.
- 22:29>> Have we Oh, we have Jesus. We have a
- 22:32lot.
- 22:33>> Can we get a big cheer for David Brady,
- 22:34please? [cheering and applause]
- 22:38Good.
- 22:40[applause]
- 22:41>> David, what's story? Good to see you.
- 22:44>> All right.
- 22:44>> All good. Yourself?
- 22:45>> Good to see you.
- 22:47>> How are you?
- 22:48Sit down now. I was wor jacket.
- 22:50[laughter]
- 22:51>> Where'd you get that jacket? Walk it
- 22:52down.
- 22:53>> This is This is a Louis Copeland special
- 22:56jacket that I never seen in my life and
- 22:58that man handed to me. What's your name?
- 23:00[laughter]
- 23:02>> Ah, County Mayor
- 23:05County Mayor
- 23:07by Jay's. You know what?
- 23:09>> That's some jacket.
- 23:10>> It's class.
- 23:11>> Sheen was it or was it T- move
- 23:15up the office? Huh?
- 23:17>> [laughter]
- 23:18>> Can I ask a question?
- 23:19>> Yeah.
- 23:21>> Does anyone of you think we're going to
- 23:23win?
- 23:27>> Have to give it back to him. [laughter]
- 23:29Come on.
- 23:30>> Well, I'll put it to you this way,
- 23:32David. When Andy Mour asked the room of
- 23:35journalists, "Do any one of you think
- 23:37we'll beat Kerry or Dublin in the
- 23:39final?" There was one journalist who
- 23:40actually put his head above the carpet
- 23:42and said, "No." Like actually spoke for
- 23:44the whole room and said no. So that does
- 23:45seem to be representative of the whole
- 23:46country.
- 23:46>> Wasn't me.
- 23:47>> Perfect for Mayo. No,
- 23:48>> I I reckon they need to lose one to win
- 23:50one.
- 23:53[laughter]
- 23:55>> We've dined out on that.
- 23:57>> Hey, Mike Frank, let me tell you this
- 23:59now. [laughter]
- 24:03>> Where did you come out with that one?
- 24:05>> Wait.
- 24:06>> Win one to lose one or lose one to win
- 24:08one.
- 24:08>> Yeah. You've never won it on Ireland
- 24:10when your your captain didn't start.
- 24:13Oh, we're getting the pitch hogs here,
- 24:16are we?
- 24:16>> Well, we have to grasp on something to
- 24:18be honest.
- 24:18>> Well, [laughter]
- 24:20to be fair, they have. No, that that's
- 24:21actually a fact that Kerry haven't won
- 24:23either with
- 24:24>> number 13 as captain in a long time.
- 24:26>> Yeah.
- 24:26>> And Clifford's changed to 14 again.
- 24:28>> Hold on. Paul Gayy told us last week
- 24:30that he's fit and he's ready to start.
- 24:32>> Yeah, he is.
- 24:33>> He's wearing 21 or something like that.
- 24:35>> Is he?
- 24:35>> The team's out and Clifford's wearing
- 24:3714.
- 24:38>> Yeah.
- 24:38>> So, they change it. They Clifford wear
- 24:4013.
- 24:41>> Yeah. And they say Mayo are cursed.
- 24:44[laughter]
- 24:46>> David, is there genuine belief in Mayo
- 24:48this week that that it's actually going
- 24:50to happen this Sunday?
- 24:52>> No, [laughter]
- 24:54but but
- 24:57let me tell you the belief is and the
- 24:59guys will need a performance of a
- 25:01lifetime. Um but you it's 89 days and it
- 25:06was it was a hard Monday morning let me
- 25:08tell you after we got bet after Russ
- 25:09common
- 25:11>> [clears throat]
- 25:11>> And
- 25:13it for me and Karen, you know more than
- 25:15anyone in this room, it's about your
- 25:18timing. It's about getting a collective
- 25:22squad right that we we've seen the
- 25:24timing has gone wrong for some teams.
- 25:26>> Some teams that were guaranteed to be in
- 25:29the allre final. I think the timing from
- 25:33a Mio collective, SNC, trainers,
- 25:36management, they've got it right. Now
- 25:38the we've made mistakes but I think I
- 25:42have never and I have always said it. I
- 25:44have never gone into an honor final and
- 25:47I have played in five or six. I've never
- 25:50gone into a final
- 25:52with three
- 25:54absolutely top class forwards and no one
- 25:58in this room can say they're not. No
- 26:00one. And they don't give a [ __ ] They're
- 26:04playing and credit to Andy. Absolutely.
- 26:07Now I give him credit but I go I'll be
- 26:10hardening him like this young fell Darra
- 26:12Burn trust me he's one of the finest
- 26:15footballers and he's been finest
- 26:17footballers he didn't play a millisecond
- 26:18against Russ common not a millisecond
- 26:21>> was that not the 20s around the corner
- 26:23no
- 26:23>> no that wasn't the agreement um
- 26:26>> who ripped the agreement
- 26:28>> I did [laughter]
- 26:30I didn't get the job in the first place
- 26:32but no Darra Burn and again you're not
- 26:35going to hold back a young fellow that
- 26:36per from performing in a conic
- 26:38semi-final just because you have a 20's
- 26:41game on the Wednesday.
- 26:42But we've unfortunately unfortunately in
- 26:46every final we've been in and I'm being
- 26:48disrespectful
- 26:49maybe to a lot of
- 26:52we've always relied on one
- 26:55>> one Killian one Kieran Mack
- 26:59you know we one Andy but now we have and
- 27:03they are Rhino Dunn who's in in pole
- 27:06position now a lot of m players have
- 27:08been in pole positions coming into all
- 27:10finals looking for player of of the year
- 27:12and the hard all-star if you know what I
- 27:14mean. But I do think that Joe Devie
- 27:17that's that just go at it express
- 27:20yourself and the new rules um has has
- 27:23really given us something that we've
- 27:25never had before in an Ireland final.
- 27:28Do you agree Mike Frank?
- 27:34>> I do. I do. [laughter]
- 27:36That's a compliment. So I'll take that.
- 27:38Uh, I do. The only thing I always
- 27:42compare
- 27:44the Mayo team now to the brilliant Mayo
- 27:47team with Keegan and Higgins and Boil
- 27:49and the boys breaking up from the back.
- 27:52Like I I always felt that was pure Mayo
- 27:54football where there was threats from
- 27:56everywhere and Higgins would go from
- 27:58cornerback. Keegan would he kick one two
- 28:01whereas the only reservation I would
- 28:04have about Mayo at the moment is that
- 28:05they're very reliant on the three boys
- 28:08mostly Ryan obviously and then Kobe and
- 28:10Burn. Three super players. Honestly, I
- 28:13love watching Kobe and Burn especially
- 28:15uh being so young. But their threats
- 28:17don't necessarily come from all angles
- 28:19of the field like other top teams like
- 28:21the Arma wing backs McQuillin and
- 28:23Charlie Og Kerry's halfback line with
- 28:25Gavin White and Brien Begley. Like I
- 28:29think that if you put some of those
- 28:31attacking halfback threats into this
- 28:33Mayo team,
- 28:34>> they'd be a a big step above where they
- 28:37are at the moment.
- 28:37>> Kieran, I'd asked you back in February
- 28:39when I think Mayo got away with maybe
- 28:41beating you in the league. I think there
- 28:42was a big win that day and they just
- 28:43about held you off. I asked you, had the
- 28:45Mayo we saw under Kevin McDeade last
- 28:47year to the Mayo you saw this year under
- 28:49anymore changed and you just said no.
- 28:52>> No, but they
- 28:53>> have they changed though. Have they is
- 28:55there is there [snorts] a difference in
- 28:56Mayo this year?
- 28:57>> Well, there's a couple of new players in
- 28:58since that like on the 20s. Um so
- 29:01[cough and clears throat] and the
- 29:02younger players all like they've done
- 29:04the same to us like like younger players
- 29:05will rejuvenate the team.
- 29:07>> Um
- 29:09it's hard to really say. I do think they
- 29:11have a chance but Kerry always seemed to
- 29:14raise their game for Mio because I don't
- 29:16think Kerry had been firing in all
- 29:18cylinders. David has been playing
- 29:19exceptionally well in some of the games.
- 29:20I thought they played well against us
- 29:22like Cork, you know, like I'd say the
- 29:24last couple of minutes give them a tough
- 29:25game. Throw did Dublin. It's very
- 29:27unusual for Kerry to go into an all
- 29:29final not firing on all cylinders. But
- 29:33[clears throat] you know, I suppose the
- 29:35big thing is is the amount of forwards
- 29:37they have like know nearly always
- 29:40marking the fourth worst defender and
- 29:42he's not a player you want having the
- 29:43fourth worst defender on you know
- 29:45because they're marking Dylan you know
- 29:47marking David like so you have all of
- 29:49those things and like this year Sean
- 29:51Yoshi hasn't kicked in like he's had a
- 29:52long injury as well.
- 29:54>> Yeah was even mentioned him tonight like
- 29:56he's capable of putting up like seven or
- 29:57eight points very easily.
- 29:58>> What did he kick on you last year? Did
- 30:00he kick 11 or 12?
- 30:01>> 12. Well,
- 30:02>> so it's but that's that's
- 30:04>> he for worst defender on Py Clifford. He
- 30:06put your second.
- 30:06>> Yeah, but that's that's the reality
- 30:08because
- 30:10>> Kerry play that type of football like
- 30:11like it's a big thing in Kerry to be
- 30:13able to score that. That's they put a
- 30:15lot of emphasis on that there like where
- 30:16other maybe counties don't which is
- 30:18unusual like you might add but they can
- 30:21score like their six forwards are all
- 30:23capable of winning games. So, it's going
- 30:25to be tight, but I'm hoping that Mio
- 30:27will just throw sort of caution to the
- 30:29win and not try to contain Kerry just to
- 30:31try and score them because as I said, I
- 30:32do believe that nearly every team will
- 30:34score 18 or 19 points in a game
- 30:36regardless of how they're playing. And
- 30:38what they then have to do is to manage
- 30:39to get that five or six extra points to
- 30:42stay in the game to be carry. So, um I
- 30:45do think they have a chance, but then
- 30:47knowing my luck, they're going to be out
- 30:49by 20 minutes. So,
- 30:54>> [laughter]
- 30:56>> Go on.
- 30:58>> You're right. But [laughter]
- 31:01let me tell you, and it is Karen, the
- 31:03first 10 minutes
- 31:05now, you're ne and you never tell a
- 31:08team, but you may need to take from the
- 31:11very first second, that 10-minute period
- 31:15is, and we've seen it last year in the
- 31:16All Ireland final, seven points up in 11
- 31:19minutes. M
- 31:20>> K do put a lot of emphasis on that. I
- 31:22don't know.
- 31:22>> Massive.
- 31:23>> From you being in the change rooms, is
- 31:24it something you do on purpose, you
- 31:28know, like at the at the start of a game
- 31:29like you like
- 31:31>> go after it or
- 31:34>> I suppose depending on depending on the
- 31:35opport going like this and rocking in
- 31:38the chair, he's
- 31:39>> he's about to tell a lie.
- 31:40>> Yeah. [laughter]
- 31:42>> Now, James, and I love the podcast. When
- 31:45you're on the chair rocking [laughter]
- 31:48>> and Patty is Yeah. Go on.
- 31:49>> We we we do speak about it. I remember
- 31:51but actually going back to a Mayo game.
- 31:53I think it might have been the replay
- 31:55that we lost.
- 31:56>> Mayo had a had a thing where they got
- 31:59really physical with you as the ball was
- 32:01being thrown in.
- 32:02>> Yeah.
- 32:02>> And they wanted to lay down a marker. So
- 32:05our thing at the time was stand up and
- 32:08go at them as well. So I remember there
- 32:10was 30 fellas just well 28
- 32:12>> that was down clarony was it?
- 32:13>> No that was in park in semiinal. It was
- 32:15just like 28 fell on the ground for beat
- 32:18of them. go on.
- 32:19>> It was just stand up and and
- 32:22you know try and match him in terms of
- 32:24actually on the field then when the ball
- 32:26>> I was actually sitting in the stand the
- 32:28same like that [laughter]
- 32:31>> you started fighting in the stands
- 32:33[laughter]
- 32:35>> but I think that do you remember Dublin
- 32:37used to focus on the championship
- 32:39quarter in the the first 15 maybe after
- 32:41halftime it's always been a carry thing
- 32:43to maybe go after from the throw in for
- 32:45that 15
- 32:46>> um
- 32:46>> their 15 last year against Dunn ball was
- 32:48it was frightening. Gavin Gavin White
- 32:50set the tone right from the getgo.
- 32:52>> Throw up.
- 32:52>> But but Kieran, you you've obviously
- 32:54coached against him recently and it was
- 32:55a week after Lou.
- 32:57>> We watched Potty Clifford that day
- 32:58together and it felt like Py
- 33:02didn't back himself to go buy a man. He
- 33:05he felt like he wasn't ready and I feel
- 33:07like some of the Car boys have been like
- 33:09that. But Py Clifford is in the groove
- 33:10now after the dubs give him the the run
- 33:12of Crow Park the last day. Do you think
- 33:13Kerry are a little bit off where they
- 33:15were last year?
- 33:16>> [snorts]
- 33:16>> Um,
- 33:19probably a wee bit, but I I think you
- 33:22know in fairness to Clifford, he's a
- 33:24game changer. Like you when you play,
- 33:25you score one five and you have a bad
- 33:27day, you're told like it is he is one of
- 33:30the best players, but the fact his
- 33:32physical size is such a a commanding
- 33:35factor in in that, you know, you can't
- 33:38block him out like you can like other
- 33:39sort of corner forwards that tend to be
- 33:40smaller. Um, so I think that's probably
- 33:43the the biggest differential. David's
- 33:46playing extremely well, but I still like
- 33:48it's if it was a manager, you'd still be
- 33:50worried about like Shaunie coming in
- 33:52looking doing his business like your
- 33:53body there like the orchestra and
- 33:55things. So, like we all play tend to
- 33:57play a man-to-man game anyway. You know,
- 33:58they bring a lot of energy. They bring a
- 34:00lot of physicality to it and
- 34:02>> um it's definitely going to be
- 34:03interesting to see that. But the first
- 34:0520 minutes I always find interesting
- 34:07with Kerry, but I think Kerry's biggest
- 34:09attribute is that in their golden
- 34:11period, their purple patch they score
- 34:13more than any other teams. Yeah,
- 34:14>> that's their biggest asset because like
- 34:16the four game we played them recently
- 34:18and [clears throat] I can you could
- 34:20argue that like you know the first half
- 34:22against them it's the same then like you
- 34:24know like for the last 15 minutes maybe
- 34:25game was over but same in the
- 34:27championship last year they hit a
- 34:2815-minute period and they'll score maybe
- 34:3012 13 points and that especially with
- 34:32the new rules in the space and the
- 34:33two-pointers they can generate that type
- 34:35of scoring progress because of where
- 34:36they can score from. And so that's my
- 34:38thing about not trying to contain them.
- 34:40You have to try and go after the scores.
- 34:41They have to try and stay like they're
- 34:43going to score 25 to 27 points. So, you
- 34:46have to be within that 22 to 23 points
- 34:48to stay in the game, which Theron and
- 34:50like Dublin did like was around the 20
- 34:52point mark.
- 34:53>> We're close.
- 34:54>> But but that's the the reality of the
- 34:55modern game. Get to that 19 or 20 point
- 34:58mark that you have to which you you
- 35:00normally will get to. Those five or six
- 35:02extra points will keep you in the game
- 35:03against Kerry. But if depending like you
- 35:06know um James's point about like
- 35:09me not adding the same from different
- 35:11parts might come to
- 35:14haunt them but it's unusual that the two
- 35:17teams are the best inside line at
- 35:19scoring they have like you know and the
- 35:21two of them have got to the champ they
- 35:22got to the final like wherever team and
- 35:25the Dublin team and stuff like it's it's
- 35:26far more spread out so it's funny maybe
- 35:28it's going back to the old days where
- 35:30the inside line actually are doing most
- 35:31of the scoring but this year like the
- 35:33two the two teams have had the most most
- 35:34of the inside scores getting it in the
- 35:37final.
- 35:37>> The we spoke about it on the pot earlier
- 35:41in the week. The start is important but
- 35:43>> I get that there'll be a period in this
- 35:46game and this is where maybe loud got
- 35:48caught out in the semi-final where Mayo
- 35:49get momentum and they bring that furious
- 35:52chaos and intensity and Mayo for that
- 35:54third quarter were exceptional. It was
- 35:55the best 15 20 minutes of football. They
- 35:57blew loud away. There's going to be a
- 35:59period on Sunday where Kerry are hot and
- 36:03that's where you find out if the
- 36:05experience of the biggest day for a lot
- 36:07of these players in their career. It's
- 36:09how can you wrestle back momentum and
- 36:11how can you limit the damage of that
- 36:12carry team in that 10-minute period and
- 36:15you're talking about the championship
- 36:16quarter with Dublin. Our biggest thing
- 36:18when we were successful is opposition
- 36:20kickouts. You get a steal and opposition
- 36:22kick out, you go for goal. last resort
- 36:24is turning back or passing it off
- 36:25because we knew momentum is essential
- 36:28and you can kill the game in that period
- 36:30and particularly now with the
- 36:31two-pointers. I think there'll be a
- 36:33period on Sunday. Kerry are too good.
- 36:35Even if they're not playing well,
- 36:37they'll have a period in this game for
- 36:3810, maybe even five minutes where
- 36:41they're on top. And I think how Mayo
- 36:44manage that momentum and to secure their
- 36:46own kick out, slow the game down, create
- 36:50us, get the ball into Rhino Dunu's hand
- 36:52so you don't let them score four or five
- 36:54two-pointers in a row because if they
- 36:55don't manage that momentum and the
- 36:57occasion gets to the younger players and
- 36:59they reinforce mistakes, Kerry can score
- 37:01110 in five minutes.
- 37:02>> The kickouts is going to be key. K be
- 37:04the masters of long kick outs because of
- 37:06the size across the back.
- 37:07>> Four lands across the top.
- 37:08>> So like for me able to be able to smash
- 37:10those and get the the scraps off them is
- 37:13going to be key. So Pigory they'll come
- 37:15into it.
- 37:16>> But that's the they're the two boys to
- 37:18be fair to Carney and Jordan Flynn.
- 37:20>> They need four and then it's it's coming
- 37:22under brakes. And the other side of that
- 37:24there is that Kerry are the best team at
- 37:26not giving scores after kickouts even
- 37:29the ones that they lose.
- 37:30>> Slow it down. To me, they're the two
- 37:32points that like Mayo have to chase down
- 37:34because I I do think if they get the
- 37:35ball to their inside line, they will get
- 37:37scores. But the thing is, if you're
- 37:39going to like what are we having now in
- 37:41the game, we're averaging if we're
- 37:42hitting 25 30 scores, putting six or
- 37:44seven wides, you're adding 65 to 70
- 37:46kickouts a game. And if you're the best
- 37:48at getting those, you're going to get
- 37:50more possessions. And so, like, that's
- 37:52where Kerry really dominate in those
- 37:5450-minute periods against ourselves.
- 37:56They they're really able to dominate the
- 37:57kick out and keep possession. And like
- 38:00when you can compound those points one
- 38:03after the other,
- 38:05>> it is it is that that kick out and like
- 38:08from a retention perspective, Curry have
- 38:10been phenomenal.
- 38:11>> Keeper has been exceptional this year.
- 38:12>> Yeah, Murphy.
- 38:13>> Yeah, he's been really really good like
- 38:15like not just from a kickout point of
- 38:16view like his saves like he pulled off
- 38:18like bad he pulled off four unbelievable
- 38:20saves against us. So he's, you know, he
- 38:23slotted in there and like he's he's
- 38:25finding his players like, you know,
- 38:26people would have said that he wouldn't
- 38:27have went for those short, but he's able
- 38:29to mix them as well.
- 38:30>> Like Mo tend to go for a lot of long. So
- 38:32it's going to be interesting to see like
- 38:34who's going to win the scraps on that
- 38:35one.
- 38:35>> James had mentioned it before the
- 38:36semi-finals like the heat is different
- 38:38in an allreland final. Surely they can
- 38:40spoil a bit like surely they can put a
- 38:42bit more extra heat on Shane Murphy. And
- 38:44the flip side obviously Young Livingston
- 38:45in goals 24 he's not that young but
- 38:48first season.
- 38:48>> Yeah. And it's it's it's upstairs really
- 38:50for from from that perspective like from
- 38:54a kick out you know Livingston had
- 38:56didn't play against Russ common
- 38:58>> you know and now he's
- 39:00>> but I wouldn't compare the games because
- 39:02sometimes teams can get runny like RC
- 39:03common had serious pace this year. Oh,
- 39:05massive
- 39:06>> curious pace like and they've added like
- 39:07a lot of youth in but people are saying
- 39:08with this type of space pace is king you
- 39:11know and like again Kerry had that sort
- 39:13of pace but so do Mayo like you know
- 39:15they are missing like you know one or
- 39:17two of the older fellas that had that
- 39:18pace too but I I think that you know if
- 39:22they can break evens if they can change
- 39:23that stat on the carry line kickouts and
- 39:25win the scraps I do think they have
- 39:27players that can score and I agree with
- 39:28you in that
- 39:29>> but if you don't have if you're going to
- 39:31give Kerry like so I say like out of the
- 39:3490 possessions in game. If you're going
- 39:35to give them 60,
- 39:37>> you're going to find
- 39:38>> the one thing Mayo do have and always
- 39:41have and the one thing there's not a
- 39:42question mark over is that fight and
- 39:45that intense. That's not derogatory
- 39:46thing. It's not it's a we've just spoke
- 39:48about earlier show it's a massive plus
- 39:50and that's where the likes of Carney and
- 39:52Flynn are not the biggest guys but
- 39:53they're not going to let Marco Shay
- 39:54dominate the sky. They're onetoone
- 39:56matchups. You back Kerry to maybe win
- 39:59them but they're telling me Kalan and
- 40:01Hessan and these guys are not going to
- 40:02be absolute [ __ ] dogs. that brilliant
- 40:04Mayo team who pushed us and probably
- 40:06could have beaten us in some of those
- 40:07games. It was a fight.
- 40:09>> So they bring that and the one thing and
- 40:12and like James, you broke our hearts at
- 40:14times, right? But the pressure
- 40:18as a player, the expectation
- 40:22I broke out into a rash in 2021.
- 40:25>> Is that coppers? Oh, [laughter]
- 40:28after was after coppers
- 40:33the pressure the expectation in 21 it
- 40:36wasn't a curry. It wasn't a Dublin like
- 40:39it was just we couldn't like 60%
- 40:42capacity trying to get tickets.
- 40:44>> Hey
- 40:46>> well two there for you.
- 40:47>> Well I'm only here for tonight on one
- 40:50but you said to me DB two tickets if you
- 40:52come in I'll get you two. Sorry to tell
- 40:55you buddy. They're in this hole.
- 40:56>> He meant he meant for the show tonight.
- 40:58[laughter]
- 41:01>> It is it is time DB. Sorry to cut across
- 41:03you for our raffle which will then lead
- 41:06to our penalty shootout quiz. So what
- 41:07we're going to do is we're going to pick
- 41:08two tickets out of Tommy's bowl of
- 41:10tickets here and we're going to
- 41:12determine which two of you are going to
- 41:13be playing the penalty shootout quiz
- 41:15tonight. So DB, why don't you put your
- 41:16hand into the
- 41:17>> Everyone should have a raffle ticket.
- 41:19>> If your raffle ticket is called up,
- 41:20please join us here at the front of the
- 41:22stage.
- 41:24>> If your raffle ticket is called, this is
- 41:26really important. Owen, if your raffle
- 41:28ticket is called, it does not mean that
- 41:30you have won the tickets. It means that
- 41:32you've won the opportunity to win the
- 41:34tickets. You're going to be going to
- 41:35headtohead with another listener in uh
- 41:38our penalty shootout quiz. So, I'm going
- 41:40to let Kier McGini pick the first
- 41:42>> and he's now K. Don't look cuz are up
- 41:44there. So,
- 41:45>> it's a sign.
- 41:45>> Have a little fish around there. Only
- 41:46pick one. Just one number. You have it.
- 41:49>> M person. I guarantee it's a mu person.
- 41:52>> 285.
- 41:53>> It's a blue 285.
- 41:55>> Dope.
- 41:57>> Well done. There you go. A blue 285.
- 42:00Okay. And he he's from Mayo as well.
- 42:02>> You can stay here. It's okay. Stay here.
- 42:04I'll come down to you in a second. And
- 42:05DB, have a little fish around. Don't be
- 42:07looking at numbers. You're looking for a
- 42:08mayo tint.
- 42:09>> I have four.
- 42:10>> Let's see what we got.
- 42:11>> It's your man with the jacket.
- 42:13>> Oops.
- 42:15Don't crack if it's your man with the
- 42:16jacket.
- 42:16>> One or two?
- 42:17>> One.
- 42:17>> It's one.
- 42:18>> Blue. 53.
- 42:21>> 53.
- 42:21>> 53. Number 53.
- 42:23>> Was that the last time you
- 42:26>> 53? I know. It was 51.
- 42:27>> 51. Tommy, don't be doing that to me.
- 42:30>> Right. While Tommy's going down there.
- 42:32>> Where's number 53? We got you here. How
- 42:34are you? How you doing? [applause]
- 42:36>> So,
- 42:39>> who who have we got?
- 42:41>> Owen, where are you from?
- 42:43>> Me. Good man.
- 42:44>> I hear her.
- 42:44>> What's your name?
- 42:45>> Cheers.
- 42:46>> Harry, where are you from?
- 42:47>> Wakeo. Lovely.
- 42:48>> Ah, well done.
- 42:48>> Delighted.
- 42:49>> Come here, soul lads. All right, for one
- 42:51second. Face the boys and come here. You
- 42:53have a big decision to make. All right.
- 42:55Uh you were called first. So you've got
- 42:57first choice.
- 42:59>> You've got second pick and you've got
- 43:01third pick, right? You've got fourth
- 43:03pick. This is like in school when you
- 43:06get to pick your five aside team. You've
- 43:08got to pick two boys in front of you now
- 43:10to represent you in the off the ball or
- 43:12I learn special with AIB penalty
- 43:15shootout quiz. So you pick your first
- 43:17captain.
- 43:18>> So they're going to go headtohead.
- 43:20>> Pick me first. Question for you.
- 43:22>> I'll go for McGini. Number one, who's
- 43:24your first pick?
- 43:25for
- 43:28>> Oh, interesting. Who's your second pick?
- 43:30>> Uh, Jake.
- 43:32>> Okay, you're left with David Brady. No,
- 43:34I don't I don't mean it like that.
- 43:35[laughter] I don't mean it like that.
- 43:38>> Now, Owen, I'm going to hand over to the
- 43:39quiz master on team. Your face is in
- 43:41your teammates's hands. Okay, best luck,
- 43:43lads. You should have been from Mayo and
- 43:44Kerry.
- 43:45>> Right here in Mcini, you're first up.
- 43:49The question, the 2024 All Ireland final
- 43:53was one of the greatest moments of your
- 43:55coaching career to date, but can you
- 43:57give me the names of all of the subs you
- 44:00introduced
- 44:01>> that afternoon?
- 44:02>> Jesus Christ.
- 44:03>> Holy [ __ ]
- 44:05>> How many?
- 44:06>> Good job you picked me for.
- 44:07>> How many?
- 44:08>> [ __ ] hell.
- 44:10>> There are four.
- 44:12>> Jesus.
- 44:19There's an obvious one to start.
- 44:23>> Subie,
- 44:24>> that's one.
- 44:25>> He was always a sub.
- 44:29>> Jason,
- 44:32>> no. [laughter]
- 44:34>> Is there a life?
- 44:35>> No life.
- 44:36>> Uh,
- 44:37>> no. The wrong answers allowed a phrase.
- 44:41>> Whoa. Bench.
- 44:42>> Jesus.
- 44:44Not bad. Some bench. [laughter] Jesus
- 44:48Christ.
- 44:53>> The 2014 Ireland final
- 44:55>> moment James finally reached the
- 44:57promised land. Can you tell me how much
- 45:00he scored in that decider against God?
- 45:03>> [ __ ] off. [laughter]
- 45:09>> Correct.
- 45:11[applause]
- 45:15You should have said three or four
- 45:17anyway. Just DB to level it up. I look
- 45:20at I'm only the dun in the back of the
- 45:22class.
- 45:23>> The 2006 campaign ended in
- 45:25disappointment for Mayo as Kerry got
- 45:27their hands on Sam Magcguire. But can
- 45:29you tell me who finished the All Ireland
- 45:30Championship as top scorer in ' 06?
- 45:35>> Conor Mor. Am I right?
- 45:38>> You're right. Sorry. Yeah, correct.
- 45:39Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:42James O'Donn to win it.
- 45:44>> Right. Set up the tiebreaker. Anyway,
- 45:46>> Patty Andrews, one of Dublin's great
- 45:48servants, got his hands on seven all
- 45:49Ireland medals. But can you tell me the
- 45:51last All Ireland final that he played
- 45:53in.
- 45:57>> I can.
- 46:00So the seven you didn't play in the last
- 46:02one.
- 46:02>> No.
- 46:03>> So you've
- 46:06>> No hints from the teammate.
- 46:08>> You didn't have 11. So you have 13. You
- 46:10have 15 16. Why am I saying this out
- 46:13loud?
- 46:14>> The last one he played in.
- 46:15>> 13 15 16 17 18.
