- 0:53wow they're quite amazing aren't they
- 0:55the choir of the Department of
- 0:57Correctional Services there uh giving us
- 1:00an opportunity to enjoy their wonderful
- 1:03harmonies singing on this very special
- 1:05day at the beginning of the fundam zanzi
- 1:08uh championship for 2016 the seventh
- 1:11edition thereof and this is an
- 1:13opportunity for uh the inculcating of
- 1:16the culture of reading and uh enjoying
- 1:19the process of reading now somebody who
- 1:22enjoys reading uh and also tells quite a
- 1:25powerful story is somebody who's from
- 1:28this area Alison B some of you may know
- 1:31her story in 1994 she was brutally raped
- 1:35assaulted uh stabbed uh 16 times and uh
- 1:39to tell us a little bit more about her
- 1:41story um 20 or so years on uh she's
- 1:46written a bestseller actually 990,000
- 1:49copies called I have life Allison thank
- 1:51you very much for joining us and welcome
- 1:53to the program thank you very much nice
- 1:55to be here all right so um let's start
- 1:58with the book actually because we're
- 1:59talking about reading books and it's
- 2:01990,000 copies sold but that means more
- 2:04than 90,000 people have read it uh tell
- 2:07us about your journey writing it well
- 2:10that's the exciting thing to think so
- 2:11many people have read it have heard my
- 2:13story and shared it writing it was was
- 2:16hard I wrote it with a girl called
- 2:17Marian Tam who um was my ghost writer
- 2:21because I think it was such a difficult
- 2:22story to write on my own she made me
- 2:24remember she made me go places that were
- 2:26maybe hard for me to do on my own but it
- 2:29was definitely a atic experience I think
- 2:30telling a story that has a me I like
- 2:34books that have a have a story or have a
- 2:36message behind them you know not just a
- 2:37story that I'm going to forget
- 2:38afterwards so this was very much that it
- 2:40was a it's a true life story and we
- 2:43wanted to share also some of the lessons
- 2:44that I learned in it so I found those
- 2:46lessons myself in writing it yeah now
- 2:49one of the things that we've learned
- 2:50today is that particularly with inmates
- 2:52at the Department of Correctional
- 2:53Services um telling their own story uh
- 2:56is a powerful process and um I don't
- 3:00know healing maybe is that what you
- 3:02found I think so I think it's you know
- 3:04it's it's for me it's a double thing
- 3:07it's what it's sharing I I find out
- 3:09myself in talking about it I find out
- 3:11what I what I'm finding out is the
- 3:13lessons but also knowing that my lessons
- 3:15might help someone else you've got
- 3:18you've got two little boys I want to
- 3:19know have you have you read to them do
- 3:21they enjoy reading books not my book but
- 3:24they do I mean they that's something
- 3:25that from start they get got bit Dum
- 3:27stories in fact we had a lovely um thing
- 3:29where they actually we would just tell
- 3:30stories they would have to give me three
- 3:32random words and I would have to make up
- 3:33a story with those three things in them
- 3:36uh reading books that you know one of
- 3:37the things was always it's my turn to go
- 3:38and choose the books tonight it's
- 3:40something that we're reading family even
- 3:41my mom my mom won an award at the
- 3:43library here in George for taking out
- 3:45the most books in a year or something so
- 3:47we're a reading family yeah all right
- 3:49Alison we're going to leave it there but
- 3:51thank you very much indeed for sharing
- 3:52your thoughts with us and this beautiful
- 3:54book I have life Allison's Journey uh
- 3:57more than 990,000 copies sold and in
- 4:01fact what I forgot to tell you is that
- 4:03there's been a film that's now been
- 4:05developed on this book look out for that
- 4:08but also pick up the book and enjoy
- 4:11reading this is a powerful story it may
- 4:13inspire you as well we're going to leave
- 4:14it there for the time being and catch up
- 4:16with vein in the studio with the World
