  1. 0:00Tokyo University has revealed a very
  2. 0:01strange motor that is unlike anything we
  3. 0:04have seen before. It is made from a
  4. 0:06ferroelectric fluid that flows like a
  5. 0:08liquid, yet has ordered molecular
  6. 0:10structure like a solid. With an applied
  7. 0:13voltage, the fluid is aligned with a
  8. 0:15transverse electrostatic force. This
  9. 0:17allows the fluid to rotate and drag the
  10. 0:20rotor along, thus producing motion. This
  11. 0:23new advanced design is more powerful
  12. 0:25than its electrostatic predecessors, yet
  13. 0:28it can also unlock strange properties
  14. 0:30like having a plastic rotor instead of
  15. 0:31magnets or electromagnetic coils. Its
  16. 0:34applications are endless, from soft
  17. 0:36microrobotics to semiconductor
  18. 0:38fabrication, but luckily it will not be
  19. 0:40forming any advanced liquid metal
  20. 0:42humanoid prototypes anytime soon.
