- 0:00In this town, every day someone new
- 0:01comes out of the well.
- 0:03Every morning at 6:00, the rope starts
- 0:04pulling on its own; the bucket rises
- 0:06slowly, carrying someone who had
- 0:07disappeared.
- 0:08On Monday, the baker; on Tuesday, the
- 0:10mailman; on Wednesday, the boy from the
- 0:12kiosk. They come back the same, almost.
- 0:14They don't blink; they eat spiders.
- 0:16If you ask them about before, they smile
- 0:18and don't answer, and at night they
- 0:19stand in the square looking at the well
- 0:21.
- 0:21Nobody knows how they disappear. One
- 0:23night they are there, and by morning,
- 0:25their bed is full of dirt. We moved here
- 0:26on a Monday, and nobody warned us. The
- 0:28baker sold me some bread; I said thank
- 0:29you, she didn't blink. I asked the boy
- 0:31from the kiosk what his favorite candy
- 0:33was. He smiled and kept smiling until I
- 0:35left. That night I saw them from my
- 0:37window, 12 neighbors still under the
- 0:38moon looking at the well, and suddenly
- 0:40they all turned around and looked at me
- 0:42. The next day I went to tell the mayor
- 0:43; he listened to me smiling without
- 0:45blinking. On his desk was a jar of
- 0:47spiders labeled "to snack on," and on
- 0:48the wall, a newspaper from 40 years ago
- 0:50. The mayor came back from the well, put
- 0:52his hand on my shoulder, and left a mud
- 0:54stain. That night, while everyone was
- 0:55looking at the well, I got into the
- 0:56bucket and went down. Up above, the moon
- 0:58got small; on the edge, their faces were
- 0:59watching me. Below, everything was black
- 1:01, the rope creaked, something dripped,
- 1:03and something breathed. The bucket hit
- 1:04bottom and the walls lit up; there were
- 1:06thousands of roots shining like
- 1:08fireflies, and among the roots hung
- 1:09cocoons. In the first one slept the
- 1:11baker; next to her, the mailman and the
- 1:13boy from the kiosk, breathing calmly,
- 1:14healthy; and at the back, in the oldest
- 1:16, moss-covered cocoon, the mayor. Then I
- 1:18understood: the ones above weren't them
- 1:20, they were mud copies made by the well
- 1:22; that's why they don't blink, that's
- 1:23why they eat dirt bugs. They don't
- 1:25remember anything because they never
- 1:26lived it, and at night they look at the
- 1:27well because it's their home. The mayor
- 1:29above was the oldest copy, 40 years
- 1:31running the town of mud. I opened the
- 1:33cocoons one by one, everyone upstairs,
- 1:34wake up. They started opening their eyes
- 1:36and blinking; I brought them up in the
- 1:37bucket two by two. The whole night
- 1:39turned to dawn; the copies were waiting
- 1:40for us in the square. The real baker
- 1:42came out and her copy crumbled into dirt
- 1:43, then the mailman, the boy from the
- 1:45kiosk. Poof, poof. The mud mayor tried
- 1:47to run away, he fell apart in the middle
- 1:49of the square. The last to come out was
- 1:51the real mayor. He blinked, looked at
- 1:52the town, and looked at me.
- 1:53>> Ever since you arrived, they keep
- 1:55kicking me out of everywhere.
- 1:56>> 40 years asleep and he was just as
- 1:58grumpy. Now at 6:00, the bucket comes up
- 2:00with water on its own and the mayor
- 2:01threw the jar of spiders into the grass
- 2:02. Like and subscribe, and if someone
- 2:04comes out of the well, don't say hello.
