- 0:00I'm Joe Hobson and I always Eileen we're
- 0:02noses attorney while she was on death
- 0:03row
- 0:04my Challenger representing Eileen I mean
- 0:06normally in my job I'd have one guy in
- 0:08one burger one death sentence with a
- 0:10link I had seven of them so we tried to
- 0:13argue that mr. glazier was ineffective
- 0:16that proper mitigation evidence wasn't
- 0:20granted that her childhood wasn't
- 0:23properly brought before a jury or a
- 0:24judge who sentenced her to death
- 0:27from 1993 to 2002 Aileen Wuornos his
- 0:32legal team files dozens of Appeals which
- 0:34are repeatedly denied because of all the
- 0:37media attention you had to take into
- 0:39factor it's gonna affect the judge who
- 0:41might rule in emotions you know there's
- 0:43the court of public opinion and you
- 0:45always have to combat a unfavorable
- 0:47media narrative
- 0:53I've been in a lot of death rows over
- 0:56the years and it is horrific you're in
- 0:59the cell 23 hours a day a 6x9 sometimes
- 1:02you have a window sometimes you don't
- 1:04you go mad and she already had enough
- 1:07problems as it was after several years
- 1:11on death row
- 1:12Eileen began to complain about her
- 1:13treatment there in the prison she
- 1:15thought the guards were poisoning her
- 1:17food eileen claimed that the guards were
- 1:20blasting noise in herself so she
- 1:22couldn't sleep I think she was
- 1:25sociopathic and psychotic and
- 1:27psychopathic she thought that the CIA
- 1:30was in on edge and thought that were
- 1:32transmitters in her food
- 1:37[Music]
- 1:38the appeals process continues for many
- 1:41years which is common in a capital
- 1:43murder case but no one anticipates the
- 1:46surprising twist to come it was 2001
- 1:50Eileen had been on death row for about
- 1:52eight years and suddenly she's back in
- 1:55the news
- 1:56and I killed them as cold as ice and I'd
- 2:00do it again to nine oh I'd kill another
- 2:02person cuz I've paid in humans time I
- 2:05leave fires her defense team and ends
- 2:08all of our appeals now she changes a
- 2:11story and says she killed in cold blood
- 2:13she volunteered to die no sense and keep
- 2:16it keepin me alive because I just would
- 2:18absolutely kill again I've got too much
- 2:22anger too much hatred in me now she is
- 2:25recanting her original claims that it
- 2:27was all in self-defense
- 2:28she had just finally given up completely
- 2:33she was just done she said I have no
- 2:36chance for anyone to believe me on
- 2:38anything then just let me go but I
- 2:41didn't believe that in her heart she
- 2:43really wanted to die
- 2:44attorneys and activists claim Wuornos is
- 2:46mentally ill too unstable to face the
- 2:49death penalty I've been practicing for
- 2:5144 years and I was a prosecutor for a
- 2:53number of years that was the first time
- 2:54I've seen a defendant actually walk in
- 2:56and saying I want to drop all my Appeals
- 2:58I want to be sentenced I deserve to be
- 3:01sentenced to death her attorneys argued
- 3:03that Eileen was not fit to make this
- 3:06decision and she wasn't but
- 3:08court-appointed psychologist allowed
- 3:10[Music]
- 3:16cuz what she done she knew she wasn't
- 3:19gonna get out of this Hawaii prolong it
- 3:21keep going on it she wanted to go to
- 3:22heaven she had me write and everybody
- 3:25governors and everything please execute
- 3:27her in her words and scented her mail in
- 3:29her letters for her Aileen Wuornos wrote
- 3:32a handwritten 23 page letter to the
- 3:35Florida Supreme Court Florida Supreme
- 3:37Court treated MS minoes as letter like a
- 3:41petition for writ of habeas corpus and
- 3:43that's the legal term for a pleading you
- 3:46would file if you're being housed and
- 3:49there's something wrong with the
- 3:52treatment you're receiving while you're
- 3:53being housed in the prison system so
- 3:56that's how I got involved with the case
- 3:57I'm Rob single I represented Aileen
- 4:01Wuornos in 2002 after she was placed on
- 4:04death row what Aileen Wuornos wanted was
- 4:06to be executed as soon as possible but
- 4:09while she was waiting to be executed she
- 4:12wanted to be treated humanely some of
- 4:15her complaints included tampering with
- 4:17her food people saying certain things
- 4:19for the purpose of agitating her the way
- 4:22I viewed her claims is that if they were
- 4:24true then there were some real issues
- 4:27with the treatment of the women on death
- 4:30row by the prison guards but if they
- 4:32weren't true then it was evidence of
- 4:34delusional behavior which means that
- 4:36Aileen Wuornos wasn't competent to be
- 4:38executed
- 4:40[Music]
