- 1:22are really tuned in to this episode. We
- 1:24have a high desert local boy. We have
- 1:27the one, the only Mr. Mayor Ray Gabriel
- 1:31Re. [laughter]
- 1:33He's that. What's up, mayor?
- 1:35>> What's going on? What's going on? You
- 1:36try, bro. You try.
- 1:37>> Yeah. Thank you. Sorry. Happy Friday.
- 1:39Happy Friday to you, boys.
- 1:40>> Friday. Like,
- 1:41>> this is different for us cuz we usually
- 1:42record on Saturday mornings, right? So,
- 1:44everyone's off of work right now.
- 1:46>> Hey, I haven't done this in a while.
- 1:48>> Yeah, usually we come in Saturday.
- 1:52We have worked out. Joe's got his
- 1:53coffee, shaking his ass. Adam has his
- 1:55breakfast, little McMuffins, you know,
- 1:58sandals.
- 1:59>> No, I'm over here like, "Wake up,
- 2:01brother."
- 2:02>> But I appreciate it, man. My life right
- 2:03now is uh super hectic, right? So, I was
- 2:06like, "Man, I really want to do this.
- 2:08Can we figure out the schedule?" So, I
- 2:09really do appreciate.
- 2:10>> Same thing for you. Like, we have a
- 2:11group we have a group chat with four PE,
- 2:13you know, moving parts in it. And we try
- 2:15to get you on and we're trying to figure
- 2:17out Jay. Joe's like, "Friday 7 o'clock."
- 2:19And I'm like,
- 2:20>> "Fuck no." All right. Yeah. [laughter]
- 2:22But yeah, like you know, we make room
- 2:24for everybody and it's all
- 2:26>> such a big if we can move it around,
- 2:27we're honest.
- 2:28>> We all understand life.
- 2:29>> Appreciate y'all.
- 2:30>> We know it's a far trek from Atlanta,
- 2:32too.
- 2:32>> I was like, man, where am I going? I'm
- 2:33like, I know Lern Valley, but like
- 2:35[laughter]
- 2:35>> where the [ __ ] am I?
- 2:37>> I turn down this [ __ ] I'm like, oh, I
- 2:38know exactly why he's out here. These
- 2:40some nice houses.
- 2:41>> It's peaceful. Everybody does. They take
- 2:43like, where the [ __ ] am I going? And
- 2:45they get here like, oh, this is nice.
- 2:47Yeah. I'll be out here chilling you.
- 2:48I'll see you guys when I see you. Yeah.
- 2:51What's going on, mayor?
- 2:52>> Oh, man. Um, a lot, you know. Uh, right
- 2:55now Atlanta doing, you think?
- 2:56>> Election season.
- 2:57>> Election season, right? So, you know,
- 2:59going out there getting beat up uh on
- 3:01[laughter] social media, you know, to
- 3:02just keep on, you know, serving the
- 3:04people, you know, um adding on this uh
- 3:07election cycle on top of just life.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:09>> You know, uh
- 3:10>> you got kids in that as well?
- 3:11>> I got two I got two nephews that I'm
- 3:13raising, right? My wife and I uh we
- 3:15don't have kids yet, right? But, you
- 3:16know, God willing, we will. But um you
- 3:18know I've been raising my nephew since
- 3:19they were one and two.
- 3:20>> You got kids. You're good. So I got
- 3:22kids. You got to go there. They're
- 3:23little mini races, right? They walk
- 3:24around school. My dad's the mayor, you
- 3:26know, so [laughter] they love it.
- 3:27>> I was going to buy this place. He's
- 3:29going to buy this place. They love your
- 3:30>> Somebody shut him up.
- 3:32>> And then football season, you know, um
- 3:35it's our fall season, so we're doing a
- 3:36lot of like uh city events, right? So
- 3:38it's just
- 3:39>> So we've heard through the grave, you're
- 3:40a big youth football guy.
- 3:42>> Now I am. Right. Now I am. So um it's
- 3:44actually my council member Angelo's
- 3:46fault, right? So, uh, we were, you know,
- 3:49he was heavy in youth sports, right?
- 3:50He's like, "Oh, I got my own little
- 3:52community, this, that, and the third. My
- 3:53boys, you know, turn of age, and they
- 3:55get involved, you know, he gets me
- 3:56involved in football." And now it's one
- 3:59of those areas where I'm just like,
- 4:01"Yeah, this part of like the world,
- 4:04right, when it comes to kids has no real
- 4:07support."
- 4:07>> Mhm.
- 4:08>> You know, like when it comes to youth
- 4:09sports, if you don't have a parks and
- 4:11reccks department that's very minimal,
- 4:13like it gets real no real funding.
- 4:16Truly,
- 4:17>> it could be like a big thing. Youth
- 4:18football is pretty big. Like all the
- 4:20parents come out, they show up, the
- 4:22>> the sidelines are packed with support.
- 4:24Like it's a big thing. Apple Valley has
- 4:25a big program.
- 4:26Apple Valley,
- 4:28>> but if they're not being supported,
- 4:29right, by by the organization, you know,
- 4:32by by getting sponsorships and things
- 4:34like that, like you're left on your own,
- 4:36you know, like you have to have a heart
- 4:38of of giving back of the ability to be
- 4:40able to raise money, you know, and to be
- 4:42able to give give to those who who can't
- 4:44do it, you know, and there's a lot of
- 4:45kids in in Avalon, right? That
- 4:47>> that'd be a great thing for all them out
- 4:49there,
- 4:49>> you know. So, it's been really really
- 4:50well. We're on our second season um as
- 4:52an organization, Avalanto Heat. You
- 4:54know, last year every age group, um, you
- 4:57know, six different age groups made it
- 4:58to one level, another the Super Bowl.
- 5:00That's right. Four of them won like the
- 5:01D1 level.
- 5:03>> Yeah. We're doing good, man. We're doing
- 5:04>> anything derogatory. There's a lot of
- 5:06little athletes out there.
- 5:07>> Yeah. I got to keep
- 5:09>> They're just chilling.
- 5:11>> But they're they're looking for that.
- 5:12They're looking for that opportunity,
- 5:13right? And that's one of the things, you
- 5:15know, with me and my wife, we talk about
- 5:16it all the time. Like when you look at
- 5:18the framework of Olonto that's not
- 5:20necessarily you would think the
- 5:22framework of building up a community but
- 5:24a strong community has to be able to
- 5:26have resources for the kids right
- 5:28because the school's not going to do it
- 5:30because it doesn't fall under their tax
- 5:31base. The city's not going to do it if
- 5:33you don't have a parks and wrecks,
- 5:35right? So it's really how do you build
- 5:37it? You have to have the framework to be
- 5:40able to even allow the kids to do
- 5:41something outside of school.
- 5:42>> Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:43>> Yeah. Um,
- 5:45>> throw that on the plate
- 5:46>> real quick for some, you know, some
- 5:47people who kind of don't know too much
- 5:48about you. You, um, tell us about where
- 5:50you grew up real quick.
- 5:51>> So, um, my name is Gabriel Reyes. I'm 39
- 5:5539 years old. Uh, I'm raised in
- 5:57Avalanto, right? From the north side of
- 5:59Avalanto. I've lived in Avalanto since
- 6:011992, you know. Um, I I grew up off of
- 6:05we know it as Chamberlain nowadays.
- 6:07Damn. Right.
- 6:08>> First apartment.
- 6:08>> Chamberlain. My first apartment. If you
- 6:10if if you're if you're old to the desert
- 6:12>> is that old
- 6:13>> Atlanta we know it as Crippen right so
- 6:17um you know I went to I went to George
- 6:19when it was on the base right I went to
- 6:21Shepard Middle School when I was on the
- 6:22air base
- 6:22>> Hey so you grew up like me I used to
- 6:24play sports out there at the Air Force
- 6:25base it was so beautiful I don't know if
- 6:27you guys ever been there when it was
- 6:28like sports going on
- 6:29>> dude baseball field they had a b like so
- 6:33baseball field was right outside the
- 6:34basketball gym
- 6:35>> yep
- 6:35>> so dude it'd be like you drive through
- 6:37there it's all desolate all of a sudden
- 6:39poof
- 6:40Everybody's outside, people are playing,
- 6:42basketball's going on, like and they're
- 6:44right next to each other. So like
- 6:46>> like literally be like this is the
- 6:48baseball field and the house is the
- 6:49[ __ ] basketball gym.
- 6:50>> And it was big, dude. Like it'd be
- 6:52packed on the weekends, big games,
- 6:53allstar games. It was it was a lot of
- 6:55fun.
- 6:56>> Just No, it's abandoned. The base is
- 6:57abandoned.
- 6:58>> No. Um, so
- 6:59>> they used to have a golf course there,
- 7:00too. That was legit.
- 7:02>> Westwinds was a golf course, bro. I grew
- 7:04up on those ladies.
- 7:05>> That was a good time. You were free. You
- 7:07got out there, you were free as a bird.
- 7:08Like it was nice, but like no nobody to
- 7:10worry about [ __ ] You weren't hitting no
- 7:12houses that nobody lived in.
- 7:14>> It was nice. Like
- 7:15>> you lived in Hawaii too, right?
- 7:16>> I moved to Hawaii. So I graduated from
- 7:18Silverado in ' 05. Um young and dumb,
- 7:20right? So I needed to kind of like
- 7:22kickstart and restart my life. So I
- 7:24moved to Hawaii. Um you know, no
- 7:26friends, no family, just wanted to go
- 7:28somewhere where I can really just figure
- 7:30life out as an adult, right? Uh moved
- 7:32out there. I got involved in the hotel
- 7:34industry. Uh worked in the front desk in
- 7:36management. And I met my wife out there
- 7:38uh in 2012 and then we got married in
- 7:412013 and um life was sad. Life was good,
- 7:45you know. And then uh my mom calls me,
- 7:48"Hey, your dad's sick, you know. Um so
- 7:51you were living out there." Yeah. I was
- 7:52living out in Hawaii.
- 7:53>> Um and she's just like, "You know what?
- 7:56>> Um I know it's a lot to ask, but can can
- 7:58you move home?
- 7:59>> You know, can you give me can you give
- 8:00me two years of your life because I
- 8:02don't think your dad's got two years,
- 8:04right?" So talked it over with my wife.
- 8:06You know, I came out here first to see
- 8:08what was really going on. And then when
- 8:09we found out that he was pretty sick,
- 8:12you know, we she she you know, being an
- 8:14amazing supportive wife, she moved. She
- 8:16came. She's like, "All right, bet, babe.
- 8:17We're going to give, you know, mom and
- 8:19dad two years."
- 8:22>> So, we go from paradise truly paradise.
- 8:25>> I bet. That's why I'm like, "Damn, man.
- 8:27That's a hard move." But
- 8:28>> done weekend.
- 8:29>> You do what you got to do for your
- 8:30family.
- 8:31>> Dad looks okay. [laughter]
- 8:32>> Yeah, he's he looked fine to me.
- 8:34>> Yeah. But we were it was life was good
- 8:36man you know completely different we got
- 8:38to travel enjoy life you know we're
- 8:40doing well in our careers and then just
- 8:42relocating here you know but um you know
- 8:44real
- 8:46>> I'm a real down to earth person but you
- 8:47know I have a strong relationship with
- 8:48God right um I don't never fake the funk
- 8:51you know I am who I am but I'm I'm
- 8:53balanced in my in my spiritual
- 8:55relationship right so
- 8:56>> would you say it's more spiritual or
- 8:57like religious
- 8:58>> spiritual
- 8:59>> okay
- 8:59>> right um you know that's a whole another
- 9:02rabbit hole we can go about right
- 9:04>> it's Oh, well, I just asked cuz it's two
- 9:06ways. And if you say whatever you said,
- 9:07it's understood like right there.
- 9:09>> Um, so, you know, it was came here, you
- 9:13know, found a good, you know, home of
- 9:14church cuz that was really important to
- 9:16my wife and, um, just got connected, you
- 9:18know, we started, you know, our
- 9:19business, two businesses. We're doing
- 9:21well with that. And then, um, you know,
- 9:23it was truly got called, you know, I got
- 9:25called to politics, right? We were, me
- 9:28and my wife were youth leaders for our
- 9:29church, um, in Avalonto, right? And our
- 9:32pastor was just like, "Hey man, you
- 9:34know, you need to run from mayor."
- 9:37>> And I was like,
- 9:38>> "No, I'm good. I'm [laughter] I'm enjoy
- 9:40I'm enjoying business. I'm join
- 9:44like I'm big island. I'm trying to live
- 9:46life, man.
- 9:47>> Honolulu,
- 9:48>> you know, just trying to live life." But
- 9:50um boom, then all the stuff all the
- 9:52crazy stuff started happening, you know,
- 9:54and it's just
- 9:54>> is that when all the um
- 9:56>> the stuff with the previous mayors, all
- 9:58the trouble controversy came through in
- 10:00that time with Richard?
- 10:01>> Yeah. So what's crazy?
- 10:03>> Was it Ker?
- 10:03>> It was K. Yeah. So what's crazy during
- 10:05that time frame, you know, boom, two,
- 10:08three months after I had that
- 10:09conversation with my pastor, you know,
- 10:12the mayor pro Tim gets arrested, right?
- 10:14So there's a special meeting, try to do
- 10:16an appointment, you know, I go and um it
- 10:19was a process, man. It was a journey.
- 10:21Truly a journey for sure. Um and you
- 10:24know, I was going to go do the special
- 10:26election and I just heard like Clar's
- 10:28day, you know, I didn't call you to run
- 10:30for council. I called you to be the
- 10:32mayor, you know, and when those things,
- 10:34you know, I believe, you know, when when
- 10:36you're when you get called to do
- 10:37something, you can't negotiate with the
- 10:39big guy, right? Like I'm like, hey, let
- 10:40me be council for two years, then I run
- 10:42for mayor, you know, and so I didn't,
- 10:45right? I didn't I I I I didn't apply. I
- 10:47let it I let the the the the place play
- 10:50out, right? And then boom, May, June of
- 10:552018, the mayor gets arrested, right?
- 10:58And I remember just having the
- 10:59conversation like dang lord like you
- 11:02didn't have to get that full arrested
- 11:03like you know [laughter] I do it anyway
- 11:06like dang that's crazy you know um put
- 11:08that one but yeah man just you know it
- 11:11was uh
- 11:12>> the skill set from business where I look
- 11:13at I look at my politics and how I lead
- 11:16the city not like a typical politician.
- 11:19Am I a politician? Yes. The minute you
- 11:21get involved in politics you're a
- 11:23politician. You can call yourself a
- 11:24public servant. Whatever you want to
- 11:26call it, right? We're we're we're
- 11:28politicians, but the way I really try to
- 11:30lead the council, right, is like a
- 11:34business, right? Put the aces in their
- 11:36places, allow them to utilize their
- 11:38strengths and where their strengths are,
- 11:39right? And divide and conquer,
- 11:41>> you know, like we don't all five of us
- 11:43don't got to work on the same thing,
- 11:45>> cuz all five have different opinions,
- 11:46>> right? So, if you get a strong team, a
- 11:48team of people who are willing to go
- 11:51after this and go after that and go
- 11:52after this, right?
- 11:53>> Spread the skill set out.
- 11:54>> Yep.
- 11:55>> Utilize it. A rising tide raises all
- 11:58ships. Right.
- 11:59>> Right. So, that's really how how I look
- 12:00at it. I have an amazing city manager,
- 12:02right? Um who handles all the
- 12:04day-to-days and truly
- 12:06>> he's not afraid to make the hard
- 12:08decision for what's best for Alvalon,
- 12:10right? And that's where a lot of people
- 12:12I think um you can tell when they have
- 12:14ambitions outside of where they are by
- 12:17the way that they talk. Right.
- 12:18Respectfully, I'm not the mayor for
- 12:20Victorville. I'm not the mayor for
- 12:22Esparia. Not the mayor for Apple Valley.
- 12:24not the supervisor for county of San
- 12:26Bernardino. Like I'm elected to be the
- 12:28mayor for all the long time.
- 12:30>> So when I look at things, my mentor um
- 12:32taught me and she has a saying on her on
- 12:35her computer screen and I've applied it
- 12:36to myself is am I voting for what's best
- 12:40for the city of Alonto.
- 12:42>> Right.
- 12:42>> Right. Not the registered voters, not
- 12:45the businesses, you know what I mean?
- 12:47The city of Alonto because that's a
- 12:50massive, you know, square footage,
- 12:53right? 55 foot miles, 40,000 residents,
- 12:56you know, 300 plus businesses, you know,
- 13:00and growing
- 13:01>> and growing, right? So, am I making the
- 13:03best decision for them? Not the left,
- 13:06not the right, not the special
- 13:08interests, right? But to give everybody
- 13:11an opportunity to grow,
- 13:12>> right? And that's the way that that I
- 13:14lead, you know? Like, if you don't like
- 13:15it, cool. You don't like it, but I'll
- 13:16give you an answer on why I vote on it
- 13:18>> and why I did it. And you may not
- 13:20understand it because you're not in the
- 13:21nitty-gritty.
- 13:22>> But here's the real answer.
- 13:24>> Here's why we're doing it.
- 13:25>> So, you're not afraid to have a
- 13:26conversation?
- 13:26>> No. Never. I give people my personal
- 13:28number. You know, I give my city number,
- 13:30but I give my you want to call me, call
- 13:31me. You want to talk about it? Let's get
- 13:32coffee. Let's sit down. Let's Let's
- 13:34break bread and
- 13:35>> conversation. Let's have a conversation.
- 13:37>> Conversation.
- 13:38>> And if you don't like me afterwards,
- 13:39cool. You don't like me afterwards.
- 13:40>> Has have you had that happen where the
- 13:43relationship prospered? Bloss
- 13:45>> plenty of times.
- 13:46>> Plenty of times. I've had people like,
- 13:48"Man, when you first got elected, I
- 13:49couldn't stand you. You know, you I felt
- 13:51that you're just real arrogant. You're
- 13:53really this. You're really that." Yeah.
- 13:55When you come in and you inherit it, you
- 13:57inherit a negative $6.5 million
- 14:00structural deficit. You're coming off of
- 14:03a third decade of corruption. I'm not
- 14:05trying to be everybody's best friend.
- 14:07Like,
- 14:08>> they're getting ready to throw the dirt
- 14:10on our grave. Like, all the long was in
- 14:12a very, very bad place,
- 14:13>> right? Like, I'm trying to save the
- 14:15city. Yeah.
- 14:15>> And I got no money. I got no resources,
- 14:18you know what I mean? Then we got to
- 14:19figure it out, right? So I did I lean on
- 14:22my relationship with my city manager?
- 14:23Absolutely. All right, Jesse, how are we
- 14:25gonna grow the city?
- 14:27>> Yeah.
- 14:27>> What's the play?
- 14:28>> Teach me the play. Let me run the play.
- 14:30And [clears throat]
- 14:32seven years later,
- 14:34the city's in a completely completely
- 14:36different place.
- 14:37>> What's crazy is um
- 14:39all podcasts are everyone out there,
- 14:42right? you you have talks with your
- 14:43friends, you know, your family and
- 14:45politics comes up and and I think about
- 14:48this all the time because, you know, I I
- 14:50work in Adelanto own businesses out
- 14:51there and um I drive there every day,
- 14:54sometimes seven days a week, you know,
- 14:55and um you're driving on shitty roads
- 14:57sometimes and you're like, man, why
- 14:59don't they fix this, you know, or why is
- 15:00this like this and why is that like
- 15:02that? and we can sit and blame point
- 15:03fingers and then but first and foremost
- 15:06thank you so much for coming on the
- 15:07podcast cuz now you're we actually get
- 15:09to ask these questions and you know and
- 15:11know what the answers are cuz now you
- 15:12know you're who knows better than you
- 15:14right
- 15:15>> so tell us about the situations let's
- 15:18start with roads right because that's
- 15:19the one big thing in the [ __ ] [ __ ]
- 15:21world that I was like yeah everyone
- 15:24right so like you know what what do you
- 15:25tell people when that comes up
- 15:27>> so a lot of that has to do with the
- 15:29physical responsibility of the city
- 15:31right like what's a what are your audits
- 15:33like? Doesn't matter if you're if you're
- 15:34if you're in a negative, are you
- 15:36fulfilling your audits? Right? Because
- 15:38[snorts] when it comes to funding, and
- 15:40we just did a podcast on our Avalanchoto
- 15:42unscripted podcast, right, where we had
- 15:44um the executive um deputy director for
- 15:48Sanernardino County Transportation
- 15:50Authority, uh Mr. Otis, right? And he
- 15:53came and we put him on the podcast
- 15:54because we wanted to talk to him about
- 15:57roads, about funding, right? Try to
- 15:59educate the community on how that really
- 16:01works. Uh, and there's two different
- 16:02funding sources, right? Main funding
- 16:04sourcing. SB1, the state gas tax, right?
- 16:07And then something that we call measure.
- 16:09Measure is a half cent gas tax, right?
- 16:13That is allocated and it's it's a return
- 16:16to source type of funding, right? So
- 16:20when you spend local,
- 16:22>> you get a half a cent. It comes back to
- 16:24your city,
- 16:25>> right? So
- 16:27just
- 16:27>> is it a half a cent per what? Like how
- 16:29what's the breakdown? gallon
- 16:30>> per transaction.
- 16:31>> Just one half section.
- 16:32>> Yeah.
- 16:33>> Not per gallon.
- 16:34>> No. No, that's not gas. That's just
- 16:35>> Oh, sales tax. Okay. Like every sale.
- 16:38Gotcha.
- 16:38>> Yeah. So, um and and I'm going to I'm
- 16:41going to butcher the statistic, but he
- 16:42says it on the podcast and we did a
- 16:44short reel,
- 16:45>> but I [snorts] think he said like since
- 16:47since Measure passed um in the late 80s,
- 16:51early 90s, right? It's contributed 630
- 16:58uh 628 or 630 million in Sanino County
- 17:02that has generated like 2.6 billion in
- 17:07road work and [clears throat] bridges
- 17:09and streets and you know what I mean and
- 17:10all these other projects throughout San
- 17:12Bernardino County.
- 17:13>> Well, a lot of people don't don't even
- 17:15realize Sanino County is the biggest
- 17:16county in the country. In
- 17:17>> the country, right? So, the whole
- 17:18country.
- 17:19>> Yeah. and it goes and what I what I love
- 17:20about it is a return to source type of
- 17:23you know um investment. So, he did a
- 17:25phenomenal job really breaking it down
- 17:27and educating the community why that's
- 17:30something needs to be supported, right?
- 17:32And um and what's good about it is it's
- 17:34on the ballot this upcoming November,
- 17:36right? It's measure eye because they're
- 17:38seeking an extension for another I think
- 17:41like 30 years, right? So, that's the big
- 17:43portion of where funding comes from,
- 17:47>> right? A lot of people think like, oh,
- 17:48you you can just use the money from the
- 17:50general fund. No, when you when when
- 17:52when towns when cities do their budgets,
- 17:56everything gets allocated.
- 17:57>> A lot of people that No, I'm not
- 17:58sticking up, but road work's expensive,
- 18:00isn't it?
- 18:00>> Yeah. For one linear mile in one
- 18:03direction, one lane and one lane,
- 18:05>> right? No curb and gutter, just one
- 18:07lane, 4 inch of of asphalt, right around
- 18:11a million dollars,
- 18:13>> right? So imagine
- 18:14>> two one lane there, one lane back.
- 18:16That's it.
- 18:17>> One mile.
- 18:17>> No middle lane.
- 18:18>> No middle lane. Just one. Just so so two
- 18:20lanes, right? Like just two lanes,
- 18:23>> one
- 18:23>> million dollar [clears throat]
- 18:24>> million dollars. Yeah.
- 18:25>> Right. So
- 18:27>> when you think about all the projects
- 18:29that are being done, right? Are they
- 18:31pulling from measure eye funding, right?
- 18:33Are they you are they are they asking
- 18:35for an advancement from years to come to
- 18:37do specific projects, right? Because
- 18:40they have to allocate the money.
- 18:41>> So are you allocated a certain amount or
- 18:43you have to ask for it? you have to ask
- 18:44for it from from the county from Sanino
- 18:46County Transportation Authority and
- 18:47that's where your finance department
- 18:50works with them, right? So, every city
- 18:52has a representative that goes down to
- 18:55those meetings once a month, twice a
- 18:57month, right? One here uh regionally and
- 18:59then one down at at the at the county
- 19:01office and it's, you know, it's voted
- 19:04on. They talk about the projects, they
- 19:05do the support, they do all the they do
- 19:07a lot of the, you know, the the big
- 19:09project engineering and planning, but
- 19:11then cities do their own, right? So, for
- 19:13Avalonto,
- 19:16um the reason why we've been able to do
- 19:17a lot of road improvements is because
- 19:19unfortunately when I when I became
- 19:21mayor, I also inherited
- 19:25five full years, but like 13 individual
- 19:29audits that weren't fulfilled. So, no
- 19:33one was checking balances the bank
- 19:34account or the water account, right? No,
- 19:36they weren't they weren't doing it,
- 19:38right? So, what does that mean? SBCTA is
- 19:42not going to release the funding.
- 19:43>> Oh, because they haven't been doing
- 19:45their duty. They weren't doing their due
- 19:46diligence. Right. So, it's not that I've
- 19:49done anything. And I'm not trying to
- 19:50discredit myself, but I'm just being
- 19:51honest. Right.
- 19:53>> Um,
- 19:54>> we were able to catch up our audits,
- 19:56>> right? So, when we're catching up our
- 19:57audits, guess what's sitting there?
- 19:59>> Money.
- 20:00>> Measure eye funding.
- 20:01>> Yeah.
- 20:01>> Hey, guess what? Let's pay some roads.
- 20:03>> Right. So, that's why we've been able to
- 20:05pave so many roads is because we were
- 20:08they started releasing
- 20:11Can you finish Rancho?
- 20:12>> We are. We we we planning, right? Well,
- 20:15[laughter] you know, we got to give you
- 20:16guys a little bit, you know, we got to
- 20:17give you guys a little bit of what the
- 20:19past was, right? Like, hey, where you're
- 20:21coming from.
- 20:21>> We're going in the right direction.
- 20:23>> Don't get the wrong people in office cuz
- 20:24it go like this, right? So,
- 20:25>> well, air expressway you guys just did
- 20:27in front of the town hall. How how far
- 20:29down?
- 20:30>> So, we went all the way down. It's nice
- 20:32taking that. So we're so we're going to
- 20:34do um 395
- 20:37east to Avalonto, right? Because that's
- 20:41>> that little stretch right there.
- 20:42>> Yeah. Because in the rest east, right
- 20:44after after all road going towards the
- 20:46prison, that's Victorville now.
- 20:48>> Is it?
- 20:49>> Yeah. That the airport's on Victorville.
- 20:51>> Well, I saw they put some patches up
- 20:53last year and I helped a little bit.
- 20:55>> That road was getting gnarly,
- 20:56>> dude. Yeah. Yeah. You see everyone like
- 20:58this driving on the road trying to avoid
- 21:00potholes,
- 21:00>> you know. So,
- 21:01>> and I got to say like
- 21:04>> all those people that work in like 420
- 21:06sector drive like [ __ ] [ __ ]
- 21:08>> Yeah.
- 21:09>> All of them, dude.
- 21:10>> Oh, after work. Oh, yeah. Dude, they're
- 21:12just like Jesus Christ.
- 21:14>> A bunch of kids in race car.
- 21:16>> So, we're going to put a signal light on
- 21:17Bellflower and Rancho.
- 21:19>> That's cool. That That's better than the
- 21:20four-way.
- 21:23>> Oh, that first Oh, yeah. Light right
- 21:25there. That'll let things flow.
- 21:26>> Yeah, it'll help. Most definitely.
- 21:28Right. Um, so we've done 18 linear miles
- 21:33worth of road improvements,
- 21:34>> right, since I've been mayor.
- 21:36>> But it's just cuz we were getting caught
- 21:37up, right? And people question like my
- 21:39opponent, right? Like she questions, oh,
- 21:41we don't have physical responsibility.
- 21:43They're lying about the audits.
- 21:45>> Then how we get the money?
- 21:47>> Yeah.
- 21:48>> Right. Like we got measure our funding
- 21:51from 2017, 2018,
- 21:542019. like we're do we
- 21:56>> so obviously you wouldn't get the money
- 21:58if the audit wasn't audit right like so
- 22:01but but again it's the political agenda
- 22:04right to try to make people doubt the
- 22:06success
- 22:08>> well if anytime they can sabotage you
- 22:09they're going to
- 22:10>> they're going to try but for me it's
- 22:12just like okay yeah we just made the
- 22:14magic we made the money magically appear
- 22:16>> $18 million so I guess a lot of people
- 22:19want to know um how much has like the
- 22:23cannabis industry benefited the town out
- 22:25has
- 22:25>> it's it's truly, you know,
- 22:28>> and I give credit where credit is due.
- 22:30>> Yeah.
- 22:31>> Their skill set was only for so high,
- 22:33right? That last administration. Okay.
- 22:36Like the Kurs, the Woodards, right? Uh
- 22:38the rights, their their skill set only
- 22:39was able to take it so high. So the
- 22:41concept of bringing in cannabis was a
- 22:44great concept. And the reason why they
- 22:45explored it was because Avalon doesn't
- 22:48have a tax base.
- 22:49>> Like we don't have a credit issue. We
- 22:51don't have a debt spending issue. We're
- 22:53not like mismanaging our our our our
- 22:55funding. Like we don't have a tax base,
- 22:57a point of sales tax, right? The main
- 22:59reason why we don't, and we'll talk
- 23:01about it later, is because our main
- 23:03corridor, Highway 395, we don't have the
- 23:06ability to be able to generate revenue.
- 23:09Like we have no access
- 23:11>> to the highway
- 23:11>> to to the highway, right? So direct.
- 23:13Yeah.
- 23:14>> Calr does, right? That's something that
- 23:15got, you know, taken from us in 1985 and
- 23:19we're trying to fix it. So that's why
- 23:21the cannabis industry, you know, truly
- 23:24was the the catalyst that that saved the
- 23:26city, right? Um and and
- 23:28>> what do you mean you can't get I don't
- 23:30understand that.
- 23:31>> They can't pull off the highway directly
- 23:32to a business. They're all side streets.
- 23:35Like it's no business direct comes off.
- 23:37>> Okay, I got you.
- 23:37>> So the problem is back in 1985, and
- 23:40we're [clears throat] we're battling
- 23:41through it right now, so I'm going to be
- 23:42as politically correct as possible. Um,
- 23:45back in 1985, there is a concept called
- 23:48Highway 222 that they wanted to build
- 23:51and they wanted to redirect Highway 395.
- 23:53They wanted to take it like around Elm
- 23:55Mirage and then bring it back over to
- 23:56Palmdale, right? So, they're trying to
- 23:58kill Highway 395 through the city of
- 24:01Alvalonto. So, they created an
- 24:04>> not there no more, right?
- 24:05>> Yeah.
- 24:05>> Well, it would have been there but not
- 24:06>> it wouldn't have been an active highway,
- 24:08right? It would have redirected it all
- 24:09through like Elmarrage, right? Um, a big
- 24:12loop around instead of the straight
- 24:14connection.
- 24:15So long story short, they passed thisou
- 24:18memorandum of understanding with CALR
- 24:20and the mayor in ' 85 utilized the whole
- 24:22highway 222 aspect. Well, that project
- 24:25died in the late 90s, right? Well, they
- 24:29removed theou for victim asperia, but
- 24:32they never removed it for volalonto.
- 24:34>> I believe they vict direct access to
- 24:37>> that's if you look south of Palmdale
- 24:39from Palmdale to the 15, you see houses,
- 24:41you see signal lights, you see gas
- 24:43stations, right? because they have
- 24:44access to 395 and we don't.
- 24:47>> That makes sense though. Right. So if
- 24:49you look at the only development in
- 24:50Avalanto off of Highway 395 is at AM PM
- 24:54>> and where's their interest on Air
- 24:56Expressway
- 24:57>> cuz CALR didn't there isn't any really
- 25:00there's no access 395 right so
- 25:02>> everything has a street and then you
- 25:03pull into the business
- 25:04>> and that's the unfortunate part right so
- 25:06that's what's killed our development you
- 25:08know
- 25:08>> cuz there would be a lot more
- 25:09development along that road if you could
- 25:11if we think about
- 25:12>> 50,000 cars a day
- 25:14>> is that like highway 18 well cuz highway
- 25:1618 has the side roads Right.
- 25:18>> And that's why they did outer highway
- 25:1918. Cal runs the highway. They're the
- 25:22ones that take care of it.
- 25:23>> So ideally that's what like Adalanta
- 25:24would maybe want to do, right? Like or
- 25:27that's like another thing like that's
- 25:28another thing with like Apple Valley.
- 25:29They just got all that repaving done by
- 25:31the town.
- 25:31>> Yeah.
- 25:31>> Like by the town hall and the gym and
- 25:34all that. That's
- 25:34>> Calr.
- 25:35>> So that wasn't the town that was
- 25:37responsible for that. So now it looks
- 25:38like
- 25:39>> Yeah.
- 25:39>> But that dude that's a big crucial
- 25:41factor. Think about
- 25:43the cannabis industry was so crucial,
- 25:45right? So when I came in, they were
- 25:47taxing them 5%. Um and but they were
- 25:50only collecting like a half a mill.
- 25:52There was no compliance department.
- 25:54There was no one going out there and um
- 25:56[laughter] trying to collect the money,
- 25:58>> you know? They no one was collecting the
- 26:00money, right? So think about it. If we
- 26:01didn't have the IRS coming down our
- 26:03throats,
- 26:04>> right? Like we wouldn't just willingly,
- 26:06here you go, IRS. Here you go, Uncle
- 26:08Sam. We want to pay our taxes. No, like
- 26:10come get it. I get it. Like you know,
- 26:13it's not like I get it. They're worried
- 26:14about their business. They're worried
- 26:16about X, Y, and Z. So, if I'm supposed
- 26:18to pay taxes, but no one's coming or
- 26:19hitting me to collect,
- 26:21>> I'm not gonna state. Do they come in and
- 26:23want to collect, too?
- 26:23>> State will collect. Yeah.
- 26:24>> Yeah.
- 26:24>> Yeah. For sure.
- 26:25>> They have more power to come and
- 26:26collect.
- 26:27>> Do you uh have you had a opportunity to
- 26:29work with Newsome himself? Num.
- 26:31>> No. No. Um [laughter]
- 26:33>> the next
- 26:33>> We haven't. We haven't. We haven't.
- 26:35>> He's not going to come down this way. I
- 26:36talked to Richard once um and he was
- 26:38like when I put uh when I made cannabis
- 26:40legal in Adelanto Newsome called me and
- 26:43was like end this now and he was like
- 26:45[ __ ] you and hung up on him.
- 26:46>> Yeah that's the story [laughter]
- 26:49>> that old man dude he's funny.
- 26:50>> Yeah
- 26:52he'll come this way he come this way you
- 26:54call him Nusco. Yeah.
- 26:56>> So, someone who is a big supporter of
- 26:58Alvalonto um is Fiona Ma. Like she's our
- 27:01current state treasurer.
- 27:02>> Yeah.
- 27:03>> Um and she's running for lieutenant
- 27:04governor. Like she'll be our next
- 27:06lieutenant governor. She's a big
- 27:08supporter of Alanto. Like she um has,
- 27:11you know, come to the city, visited the
- 27:13city on many occasions as a treasurer,
- 27:16right? Asking them what are issues, what
- 27:17are our concerns, how can she help.
- 27:18>> So imagine if she gets a little more
- 27:20power, she could definitely
- 27:20>> she'll be like the number two most
- 27:22powerful person in California, right? So
- 27:24>> hope that happens for you.
- 27:25>> Yeah. So, you know, we work our
- 27:27relationships. I don't really worry
- 27:28about, you know, like the party politics
- 27:31of it. I get it. Some people work with
- 27:32us, some people won't, right? But, you
- 27:34know, for me, it's
- 27:36>> that's how it works in the game. Like
- 27:37some because of your political party,
- 27:39they'll that some will work, some won't.
- 27:41>> Yeah.
- 27:42>> Yeah.
- 27:42>> Right. Like I mean,
- 27:44>> they won't they won't say it. Unless
- 27:46what did you run on though like on your
- 27:47application on
- 27:48>> I didn't I I I tell every there's most
- 27:50people won't know what I am politically
- 27:52>> if they don't know me right cuz I don't
- 27:54I don't talk about it like I don't lean
- 27:56left I don't lean you know right like
- 27:59for me
- 27:59>> well I guess that's at the end of the
- 28:00day like he said he's running like a
- 28:01business
- 28:02>> it's a nonpart so local politics is
- 28:04local politics is nonpartisan
- 28:06>> right so the party shouldn't involve how
- 28:09you dictate your leadership
- 28:11>> so can I ask a little how did what
- 28:14happens after that guy shows to a a
- 28:15council partisan like he was partisan to
- 28:19a party as you're the one with the dog.
- 28:22>> How does how does that go? Is it just a
- 28:23look or
- 28:24>> I talked to Chris, right? I talked to
- 28:25Chris and I'm just like, "Look, Chris,
- 28:30you should have been more prepared,
- 28:32>> right? You should have known what was
- 28:34going to happen. You should have been
- 28:36more aware of what your environment was
- 28:38going to be like and you should have
- 28:40been respectful, right? But your
- 28:42personal views are your personal views,
- 28:43right? But the planning commission,
- 28:46you're the face of the city when it
- 28:48comes to taking in the applications for
- 28:50the businesses to come, right? Like, you
- 28:52knew there was going to be opposition.
- 28:54You knew that there's going to be
- 28:55heavily pushed by the quote unquote left
- 28:58agenda. Like, why are you coming in with
- 29:01your hat?
- 29:02>> You know what I mean? [laughter] To like
- 29:03piss everybody off.
- 29:04>> He's a little arrogant, too.
- 29:06>> Chris is a very interesting uh
- 29:08>> individual. [laughter] Right.
- 29:11Real real interesting. It's just like
- 29:13some of those things, right? Like, okay,
- 29:14cool. That those are your beliefs, those
- 29:16that, and the third, but
- 29:17>> talking about data centers, man. Like,
- 29:19if you don't know what the demographic
- 29:21is on that on that on that conversation,
- 29:23like nationwide,
- 29:25>> dude,
- 29:27I was pissed just because he did a
- 29:29horrible job of representing the city.
- 29:31>> Well, when you spoke about it, you could
- 29:32tell you're a little like you it was you
- 29:33were a hot it was a hot topic for you by
- 29:35watching
- 29:35>> cuz for me, like it just made us look
- 29:36bad.
- 29:37>> Yeah.
- 29:37>> Right. Like it made us look bad. Like
- 29:39you're you're not going to say nothing
- 29:41in that moment to convince or educate or
- 29:44change anybody else's mind. Why were you
- 29:46doing that?
- 29:48>> Yeah.
- 29:48>> Why?
- 29:49>> Like you're you're I felt you're being
- 29:52arrogant. I felt you're trying to make
- 29:54it your show and bro, you're not there
- 29:58for that.
- 29:58>> And it failed miserably though.
- 30:00Honestly,
- 30:00>> it failed miserably. Right. And and the
- 30:02unfortunate part was I got my my own
- 30:04opinions about it, but it didn't
- 30:08the the the
- 30:10outcome wasn't right. Right. Like it
- 30:13wasn't done right in my opinion because
- 30:16they didn't even vote on what was
- 30:18actually on the agenda.
- 30:19>> It threw everything off.
- 30:20>> Threw everything off. They voted for
- 30:22something that wasn't even there.
- 30:23>> And people don't forget.
- 30:25>> They're not going to forget that.
- 30:26>> They're not going to forget that. Right.
- 30:28So,
- 30:28>> well, tell us about the data centers.
- 30:30What? Um,
- 30:30>> yeah. on the data centers. That's a big
- 30:34[laughter]
- 30:34issue. Let me put the politician hat on
- 30:36real quick, right? Let's go like pros
- 30:39and cons from your education.
- 30:40>> Go for it.
- 30:41>> So, look, I've me personally, right, I I
- 30:46do a lot of research before anything,
- 30:48right? Um and I don't want to be led by
- 30:52the media, right? Because if you listen
- 30:54to one, they tell you one thing. You
- 30:56listen to the other, they tell you
- 30:57another thing, right? Mhm.
- 30:58>> Um,
- 31:00>> a lot of these horror stories, do I
- 31:01believe that they're real? Absolutely.
- 31:03Right. I really do believe that some
- 31:04areas do use crazy amount of waters. Do
- 31:08I believe some areas, you know, their
- 31:10electricity bills skyrocketed 1,000%? I
- 31:13believe all those things happened. The
- 31:15reason why I'm really confident about
- 31:17data centers in California, mind you, we
- 31:20have like 290 plus data centers in
- 31:23California already.
- 31:23>> Yeah.
- 31:24>> So, it's nothing new.
- 31:25>> Mhm.
- 31:26>> Right. It's nothing new. So why are we
- 31:28acting like
- 31:28>> politicized now?
- 31:29>> It's just politicized, right? So
- 31:32>> when there there's specific things in
- 31:34California that makes building
- 31:36difficult,
- 31:37>> of course,
- 31:38>> all the all the restrictions, all the
- 31:40bureaucracy, all of the red team, all
- 31:43the hoops you got jump through.
- 31:44>> And what's crazy is even though you guys
- 31:45are a government thing, you guys don't
- 31:47get special.
- 31:48>> No,
- 31:48>> you don't get to like get through the
- 31:50hoops anymore than anyone else, right?
- 31:51>> No. Right. So my confidence is
- 31:57as much as SQA has driven me crazy these
- 32:02past seven years, I can kick back my
- 32:04feet and be like, "Hey, you got to get
- 32:05through SQA,
- 32:07>> right? That's environmentals. You got to
- 32:09go through the environmentals. You got
- 32:11to go through the ERS, the environmental
- 32:13impact reports. There's just specific
- 32:16layers of bureaucracy in California that
- 32:19would not allow it."
- 32:20>> Mhm.
- 32:21>> Right. wouldn't allow it. No way.
- 32:24>> You don't have to make it an argument.
- 32:25Try to get through the steps and then
- 32:26let it that answer it.
- 32:27>> Yeah. Like if you So there's there's
- 32:30assembly bills and or senate bills
- 32:32already established, right? That says
- 32:35that there is no SQL exemption. There
- 32:38are no EI exemptions. You got to go
- 32:40through a one-year plus SQL study, a
- 32:44one-year plus EIR review. And those are
- 32:47state regulated, not city. Like we don't
- 32:50set those regulations. the state sets
- 32:51those regulations
- 32:52>> and they have to follow those reports,
- 32:54[clears throat] right? So, that's where
- 32:57my confidence is a little bit different
- 32:59than than others, right? Because we're
- 33:02not Virginia, we're not Ohio, we're not
- 33:06um you know, Minnesota, we're not
- 33:09Illinois, we're not Texas, ne Texas, New
- 33:12Mexico, right? We're not going to have
- 33:14those horror scenarios, right? We've had
- 33:17290 plus and we haven't heard of one
- 33:19yet.
- 33:21Right. So, okay, not too worried about
- 33:23that. But the way I look at it and the
- 33:25way that I go like around controversial
- 33:28like political matters is one, I want to
- 33:32hear from my community
- 33:33>> respectfully, I don't want to hear from
- 33:35Apple Valley. I don't want to hear from
- 33:36Victorville. I don't want to hear from
- 33:37Sparia. I don't want it for people from
- 33:39Ontario, Los Angeles, Riverside. Like,
- 33:41respectfully, your opinion doesn't
- 33:44matter to me because you're not being
- 33:46impacted by it.
- 33:47>> So, miss me with the politics. miss me
- 33:50with your you want to take your three
- 33:51minutes of fame to yell at the council
- 33:53and try to intimidate us and belittle
- 33:55us. That that's not going to work. You
- 33:58know, like I want to hear from my
- 33:59community.
- 34:00>> I want to hear because my community
- 34:02going to be the people that get
- 34:03affected.
- 34:04>> They're the ones that are going to have
- 34:04to truly live with it.
- 34:06>> Mhm.
- 34:07>> Are most uh data centers in like rural
- 34:09areas or they like in Silicon Valley?
- 34:12>> No, they're they're in like they're in
- 34:14commercial areas. Like you wouldn't even
- 34:15know how
- 34:16>> you see a [ __ ] building, huh? You
- 34:17know,
- 34:17>> it just looks like a building. Yeah.
- 34:19>> Right. So, they're in San Diego. Um,
- 34:21they're everywhere, right? And and and
- 34:24you know, if you go to Chib, right? And
- 34:26>> the ones I've seen in Phoenix are like
- 34:28super nice. Like
- 34:29>> the ones they have in Vegas, too.
- 34:31>> Like a landscape parking lot. Like
- 34:33everything's [ __ ] like you're like
- 34:34what what is that place? Like it's not a
- 34:36bad look. Like, but I don't we don't I
- 34:39mean, where better to build them than in
- 34:40the [ __ ] desert anyway? I mean,
- 34:43[ __ ] solar, right? It doesn't have
- 34:45negative impact, right? [clears throat]
- 34:46So, you know, there's a couple of things
- 34:48that have been done statewise, right?
- 34:50And that that have been done federally,
- 34:52like um you know, when it comes to
- 34:55electricity, Trump did an executive
- 34:57order that said that any data center has
- 35:00to do a behind the meter energy project.
- 35:03Like, they have to develop their own
- 35:04energy. Well, here's the thing. That's
- 35:06not the only answer, right? Do building
- 35:09your own energy isn't the only answer.
- 35:12Why don't you, and this is just my
- 35:13opinion, right? Why don't you generate
- 35:15your own energy but then feed it back to
- 35:18the grid that needs help?
- 35:21>> Well, pushpull.
- 35:22>> Yeah. Right. If you can generate 500
- 35:24megawws, right, and the project only
- 35:26needs 100, well, you got 400 additional
- 35:30megawws that can service a community,
- 35:33that can service a region, right? Like
- 35:35you you got to think about not the the
- 35:38the issues right now, but like look at
- 35:40how it can potentially be a solution to
- 35:42the future. Like we all know our grid is
- 35:47horrible in California.
- 35:49>> Horrible.
- 35:49>> Outdated. Yeah.
- 35:50>> So if it needs help, how can we help it?
- 35:54Let's generate some power. That's why so
- 35:56many projects That's why so many solar
- 35:58projects, right? For the longest time,
- 36:00solar was super attractive because
- 36:02they're going out to the middle of the
- 36:03desert. They're going out to the middle
- 36:04area generating all this energy and then
- 36:06doing what?
- 36:07>> Putting it back to the grid.
- 36:09>> It's wild to me because uh you know it's
- 36:10a law, right? any new housing has to
- 36:12have um solar and you see solar
- 36:14everywhere on every house but yet we
- 36:16still have problems even though every
- 36:18[ __ ] house has solar now. So yeah,
- 36:19it's like
- 36:20>> because they don't that was a money grab
- 36:23in my opinion, right? The solar industry
- 36:24for for housing. Um they didn't do it
- 36:27right. Right. Like a lot of people solar
- 36:28panels are dirty. They're not even
- 36:30generating the right amount of power.
- 36:31They're not they're not truly offsetting
- 36:32their homes. Well, the funny thing is
- 36:34though, like a like somebody we know,
- 36:37>> he said he didn't think about it. Like
- 36:39>> it generates during the day, but what at
- 36:41night?
- 36:42>> You're using power from the grid,
- 36:43>> right?
- 36:43>> You know what I mean? So like he said
- 36:45like he would go to plug in all this
- 36:46stuff at night like it's Tesla and [ __ ]
- 36:48He's like
- 36:49>> my electric bill went up. Well, yeah,
- 36:50you got to use it during the day when
- 36:52you're promoting the, you know, the
- 36:53energy. So
- 36:54>> that's where the batteries, you know,
- 36:55come into play because then you can
- 36:57utilize the power that your batteries
- 36:59are storing. Right.
- 37:00>> Right. But now batteries are so
- 37:03expensive, right? That the cost savings
- 37:05for solar
- 37:06>> isn't really there no more,
- 37:08>> right? So that's the
- 37:11>> like everything they just like it's
- 37:12there's a good wave of it and then you
- 37:13if you don't hit that wave everything
- 37:15changes.
- 37:15>> Yeah.
- 37:16>> Yeah. You know the money.
- 37:17>> Well, it's crazy that like you said the
- 37:18solar industry that was hype. See how
- 37:20many companies came out of nowhere and
- 37:22were just like, "Oh, we'll offer solar.
- 37:23We'll offer solar." And now I, you know,
- 37:26same so many industries.
- 37:28>> It's because that people are saying like
- 37:29it it's not really making a difference.
- 37:31>> Uh I've known people that have had solar
- 37:33and they taken it off their house.
- 37:35>> Yeah.
- 37:35>> Same.
- 37:36>> Well, cuz you know,
- 37:37>> I think it's like he said maybe like the
- 37:39way they approached it,
- 37:40>> right? Incentives. I saw like some of
- 37:42the plans they put together and it's
- 37:44like you know 30 grand for a system like
- 37:46or more you know and you're like I have
- 37:48to pay for that for the next 30 years
- 37:50it's like what was the point like you
- 37:51know or [laughter] when you sell the
- 37:53when you sell the house you have to
- 37:54negotiate that in the terms of the house
- 37:56they're still paying for that
- 37:57>> yeah cuz it goes on the deed I believe
- 37:59>> right
- 37:59>> yeah if you don't if you don't do it
- 38:01right you again if you don't structure
- 38:02it right right but that's where you know
- 38:04when they mandated the batteries now
- 38:06right at least one battery that does
- 38:08help but that's not the solution to it
- 38:10right So when you do it right, it's just
- 38:14getting a stable bill for the long term,
- 38:17>> right? Because if you think about it,
- 38:18our slow our our our cold months, our
- 38:21bills like a hundred bucks, if that,
- 38:23right? When are our bills high in the
- 38:25summer when we're blasting the AC,
- 38:26right?
- 38:27>> Right. So when you average, that's why
- 38:29they say when you average out your bill,
- 38:31it comes out to like 350 bucks,
- 38:33>> right?
- 38:34>> That's steady.
- 38:35>> But but now you do the solar, you do the
- 38:37batteries, you structure all that the
- 38:38right way. Now it's 150 a month for 30
- 38:43years,
- 38:43>> right? There you go.
- 38:44>> Save the money,
- 38:45>> dude. I go to my I have family live in
- 38:47South Dakota, dude. And I go out there
- 38:48and I go to my brother's house, dude.
- 38:49It's 60° during the summer. I'm like,
- 38:51bro. I was like, what's your electricity
- 38:53bill? He's like, oh, like 75 bucks. I'm
- 38:54like, dude, [laughter]
- 38:55like, dude. I'm like, that's not fair.
- 38:57Their water bills are like $30. And I'm
- 38:59like, what? And he lives in a big house,
- 39:01you know? But I
- 39:03>> away from the [ __ ] ocean, right?
- 39:05>> Yeah. Yeah. Um, the water issue. What
- 39:08did you find in your research?
- 39:10>> So, when it comes to water, there's a
- 39:12lot of different technologies, right?
- 39:13The biggest thing that people talk about
- 39:14is like the closed loop systems, right?
- 39:17Um the good thing about, you know, when
- 39:19it comes to the water consumption, you
- 39:21can in your in in which in your
- 39:23ordinance, you can tell them we need to
- 39:26see a report every 90 days of how much
- 39:28water you bought,
- 39:30right? Because a lot of these systems,
- 39:31you can buy water one time and then it
- 39:34it runs off of those 10,000 gallons or
- 39:36whatever, whatever it is, right?
- 39:38>> It's almost like a computer where they
- 39:39put the liquid to run the computer, it
- 39:40stays 100%.
- 39:41>> But see, some some stuff like that,
- 39:43right? It's also a little concerning for
- 39:45me, and this is where like I still ask
- 39:46my questions. Okay, if I'm putting
- 39:48chemicals into the water, one, what type
- 39:50of water is that? Is that drinkable
- 39:52water? Is that bottled water? Is that
- 39:55reused water? Is that recycled water? Is
- 39:57that waste water? Right? like where are
- 40:00you what what water are you buying?
- 40:02>> Right. Right.
- 40:02>> Right. And again you can mandate that.
- 40:05>> Right. You have to use
- 40:07reclamated water. You have to use you
- 40:10know waste water. You know so all of
- 40:13those things can be set up.
- 40:14>> But the problem is
- 40:17when you don't allow it in your zone,
- 40:19you can't have the conversations,
- 40:22>> right? Like staff is not going to
- 40:24entertain anything when it comes to data
- 40:26centers right now because it's not in
- 40:27our zone.
- 40:28>> Yeah. It's pointless.
- 40:29>> So staff can't get educated.
- 40:30>> So did the the town vote on that or did
- 40:32this the
- 40:32>> the planning commission did?
- 40:34>> Yeah, they
- 40:34>> the planning commission voted um to
- 40:40not add the zone
- 40:42>> and to do research.
- 40:45>> Okay. So you guys are educated.
- 40:46>> It's not out. It's not out of the
- 40:47question. It's give us time to kind of
- 40:48do research. let staff do their research
- 40:50and then come back with more equipped,
- 40:52you know, tools and resource and and and
- 40:55data on what the pros and cons can be.
- 40:58>> Is that something you're going to let
- 40:59the citizens vote on or would it be just
- 41:02the staff that that would [snorts] allow
- 41:03it?
- 41:04>> I got I got to be careful because I got
- 41:06Brown Act, right? So
- 41:07>> Brown Act.
- 41:08>> So Brown Yeah. What's a Brown Act?
- 41:10Explain.
- 41:10>> What that is is
- 41:12>> Brown Act.
- 41:13you they they frown upon you talking
- 41:16about potential future agenda items.
- 41:19>> Okay.
- 41:20>> Right. Because then you [clears throat]
- 41:21can like manipulate the vote.
- 41:22>> Oh, gotcha.
- 41:23>> Right. So, um what I'll say is this.
- 41:29[laughter]
- 41:30>> Offer him $5,000 check.
- 41:33What I'll say what I'll say what I what
- 41:35I would say is this, right?
- 41:37>> I want to hear from my community every
- 41:39single time, right? I want to hear from
- 41:41them. So, this is going to come up again
- 41:43>> 100%.
- 41:43>> For sure.
- 41:44>> Okay.
- 41:44>> For sure. Um,
- 41:47I would rather it sooner than later, me
- 41:49personally, cuz I'm not afraid to have
- 41:51the conversations, right? I'm not like,
- 41:53"Okay, let's talk about it. Let's figure
- 41:55it out. Let's let's hear your concerns."
- 41:57Because the way I function is, "All
- 41:58right, bet. If you give me 30 issues
- 42:01that you're worried about, these are
- 42:03your 30 genuine issues."
- 42:06Bet. So you're telling me if I give you
- 42:10real answers to these 30 issues,
- 42:14then it's not an issue.
- 42:17>> So you're just going to work pretty
- 42:18much.
- 42:18>> Just go to work, right? But if people
- 42:20don't want to have the conversation,
- 42:22right, then how do you really figure it
- 42:24out?
- 42:24>> Yeah.
- 42:25>> Like remove the politics, remove the
- 42:27noise, and let's talk about it, right?
- 42:29For me, what what what fascinates me is
- 42:34what pros can come from it.
- 42:37Because I've heard a bunch of crazy
- 42:38pros. I've heard Microsoft has gone to
- 42:41communities in Virginia and has redone
- 42:45all of their schools, all of their
- 42:47computers, all of their laptops. They
- 42:49have
- 42:50>> Look that up. If that's if they really
- 42:51do that,
- 42:51>> that there's that there's corporations
- 42:53out there that like buy fire trucks for
- 42:55the fire department,
- 42:56>> like Microsoft,
- 42:57>> what's it called? Community um
- 42:58>> uh community development agreements.
- 43:00>> Yeah. Right. Right. So they come in,
- 43:02they move in, they basically give money
- 43:04to the city to help infrastructure
- 43:06>> if you have their data centers in your
- 43:07area. They'll [ __ ] come in.
- 43:09>> Yeah. They'll give you money. Yeah.
- 43:09They'll help with the city, right? So
- 43:11like roads, right? Or whatever.
- 43:12>> I was at a I was at a conference change
- 43:14for them. Correct.
- 43:15>> Right. Yeah.
- 43:16>> True. [laughter] I was at a conference,
- 43:17right? I was at a conference uh you got
- 43:20to think to for them to outfit a school
- 43:22is a write-off still.
- 43:24>> Yeah.
- 43:24>> They're it's a business.
- 43:25>> Yeah. Yeah. That's what I mean,
- 43:26>> right? So
- 43:27>> yeah,
- 43:27>> what does it say?
- 43:29>> Yeah. It says Microsoft's community
- 43:30development efforts focused heavily on
- 43:33local infrastructure. Dude, I need
- 43:36glasses. Can you zoom in a little bit
- 43:37more? [laughter]
- 43:38Uh partnerships uh
- 43:40>> grassroots abilities and developer
- 43:42ecosystems.
- 43:43>> So they'll literally come in if you take
- 43:44their data center. So, no, I heard uh I
- 43:46heard that that uh Trump has a like a AI
- 43:50legal team that they send to states that
- 43:53deny or cities that deny a uh data
- 43:56centers that he sends like a legal team.
- 43:59>> Well, it's just his muscle.
- 44:00>> Yeah, exactly.
- 44:00>> Well, it's not just data centers, right?
- 44:02I mean, any big big company that comes
- 44:05into a city, they generally will offer
- 44:08something, right?
- 44:08>> No, not always. Not always. Right.
- 44:10Because if you don't ask, they're not
- 44:12going to do it,
- 44:13>> right? That's where people say we want
- 44:15to be good partners.
- 44:15>> So So like say you're working on a deal
- 44:17and you do you proposition or hey if you
- 44:19guys want to how does that come up in
- 44:21language?
- 44:22>> Yeah through through CD uh community de
- 44:26development agreement.
- 44:26>> So it's a conversation to have like hey
- 44:28maybe you guys outfit the school.
- 44:29>> The city would say the city would create
- 44:30an ordinance right that would say hey we
- 44:33would welcome applications but this is
- 44:37what it is that we're going to require.
- 44:39>> So we're going to require
- 44:40>> the the it's open for people to
- 44:42interpret but this is what's going to
- 44:43happen. Mhm.
- 44:44>> And the city sets the framework, right?
- 44:46Um of what they would like, what they
- 44:48would explore, what they would demand,
- 44:49what they would require.
- 44:50>> So like business is like almost like an
- 44:51operating agreement.
- 44:52>> Yeah. 5 million cash.
- 44:55>> Cuz like when [laughter] I I don't know
- 44:56if this falls under the same thing, but
- 44:58when we built our facility, the city
- 45:00made us put in extra fire hydrants. They
- 45:02made us pave part of the roads, you
- 45:04know? They made it they put it it wasn't
- 45:06like a ton of stuff, but it was like
- 45:07some infrastructure that the city would
- 45:09use, you know.
- 45:10>> Well, that stuff's going to stay there
- 45:11for years.
- 45:12>> Ever. Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:13So
- 45:14>> like [clears throat] there's I was at a
- 45:15conference, right? And there was a
- 45:17coalition there was there was a session
- 45:20with like seven speakers. Three of them
- 45:23were against data centers. Four of them
- 45:25were talking about the pros. And I love
- 45:28listening to the ones that were against
- 45:29it, right? Because they're giving me the
- 45:31facts of how they've taken advantage of
- 45:33other communities.
- 45:34>> Cool. Let me find out, you know, what
- 45:36they've done, what they're going to do,
- 45:37right? So that we can be prepared. But
- 45:39one of the speakers was just like
- 45:42there's coalitions out there of of of
- 45:45data center companies that are wanting
- 45:46to do them and they got billions of
- 45:49dollars set aside for infrastructure.
- 45:51>> So it could definitely help develop your
- 45:53city.
- 45:54>> It could
- 45:54>> in ways that you can't
- 45:55>> again I don't know right because we
- 45:57can't talk about it.
- 45:58>> Yeah. We can't have a
- 46:00>> No, it's a very it's a very real
- 46:01possibility if that type of money is on
- 46:02the table then these companies want to
- 46:04come in with that kind of money. They
- 46:05know what they're doing. They're not
- 46:06doing
- 46:07>> they're not I want to hear from my
- 46:09residents, right? I want to hear from my
- 46:10residents. Okay. Well, what would you
- 46:11want?
- 46:12>> Right. Well, we want to fix the pipes or
- 46:14we want we want we want free Wi-Fi or we
- 46:17want 17 [laughter] parks. Like,
- 46:18>> free Wi-Fi, homie. For life.
- 46:20>> That sounds good. I like that one. You
- 46:21know what I'm saying?
- 46:22>> Let's see what we can get at the table.
- 46:23>> But I want to know what my residents
- 46:25want.
- 46:25>> Yeah.
- 46:26>> But then then you have to ask them, "How
- 46:28do you expect us to pay for it?"
- 46:29>> Exactly. And this is where we get to
- 46:31educate. For me, it's all about
- 46:32education, man. because I had no clue of
- 46:35how local government worked before I got
- 46:37in the seat. Right now I know.
- 46:39>> That's what one time that's what Steve
- 46:41said before he left. He recommended like
- 46:44>> before you're worried about what you're
- 46:45watching on TV and politics politics.
- 46:47>> Get into your local government and learn
- 46:49like what's going on in your city and go
- 46:50show up to town halls and see what's
- 46:51going on.
- 46:52>> Educate yourself.
- 46:53>> Educate yourself. Like I have Geo in
- 46:55Avalancho, right? Uh ICE processing
- 46:57facility, right? You would think we have
- 47:00all the authority. How do you guys How
- 47:02Yeah, but that that represents you
- 47:04because it has Adalanto's name on it.
- 47:06>> Oh, does it?
- 47:07>> Right. Does it? It's just Gio.
- 47:09>> Yeah.
- 47:09>> Gio Adalanto detachment center, doesn't
- 47:11it? No,
- 47:12>> I DON'T THINK SO. [laughter]
- 47:14>> I DON'T REMEMBER. I DON'T REMEMBER
- 47:14seeing Gio on here.
- 47:16>> City manager. We need to give
- 47:17>> He's like, "Hold on. Get your hand."
- 47:19Right.
- 47:20>> Um I could see them having it in the
- 47:22name as a as like um location like a
- 47:25location identifier. So before Trump,
- 47:27right, that wasn't operational and it
- 47:29was it was it just wasn't
- 47:31>> have I have a little it says
- 47:33>> Alvanto Ice Processing Center's name is
- 47:36attached to it, but it's fedally funded,
- 47:38right? It's
- 47:38>> federalally but obviously
- 47:40>> it's privately ran fedally funded.
- 47:42>> So it does have your name on it though,
- 47:44right? Okay.
- 47:45>> But because before the city was used as
- 47:48like a pass through, right? where like
- 47:52the feds would pay the city, the city
- 47:55would then give that money to Gio and or
- 47:58vice versa, right? So, we were just a
- 48:00pass through. We didn't we didn't really
- 48:01have any say on how the location was ran
- 48:05because it wasn't up to us, right? Like
- 48:08Geo Group is a privately, you know, like
- 48:12publicly traded company. They're their
- 48:15own business. They do this, you know,
- 48:17around the world, right? So, uh but I
- 48:20don't have to make money from that.
- 48:21>> That's who runs it. Some kind of tax
- 48:23from it.
- 48:23>> Geo Group.
- 48:24>> Gio. It says Gio like where the employee
- 48:26entrance is. It says like Geo.
- 48:28>> So they're private contract.
- 48:29>> It's like they run It's like prisons.
- 48:31>> It's a private It's a private hotel.
- 48:33[laughter]
- 48:33>> It's a hotel. Go run it.
- 48:35>> Get in there.
- 48:36>> Yeah.
- 48:37>> So the So yes, back in the day there was
- 48:40a bed tax, right? Where they gave the
- 48:43city a dollar per bed per day for every
- 48:46bed that is
- 48:47>> occupied. Got it.
- 48:49>> Right. So that when they sold it,
- 48:51>> so the city owned it and then in like
- 48:532010 they sold it for 28 29 million,
- 48:58right, to the GEO group and then the GEO
- 49:00group used to take it over cuz I
- 49:01remember like in the early 90s, right?
- 49:03Like the weekend guys, they I'd see them
- 49:05like down the dirt roads picking up
- 49:06trash or like on the side of the road
- 49:08doing trash like doing their community
- 49:09service.
- 49:10>> So was that always like a a was it more
- 49:13of a jail back then or was it a like for
- 49:15um immigration? It was a jail.
- 49:16>> Yeah. Okay. When Gio bought it, they
- 49:19turned it into a private prison and
- 49:21then, you know, I'm not sure.
- 49:22>> It's for immigration now, right? More.
- 49:24>> It's for sure. It's for ICE processing
- 49:25now.
- 49:25>> Okay.
- 49:26>> Yeah.
- 49:26>> Cuz it's been on the hot seat like on
- 49:27the news, people showing up from.
- 49:29>> Do you guys get uh heat from that, too?
- 49:32>> We do. But again, this is where local
- 49:34politics matter, right?
- 49:36>> They're a private entity.
- 49:38>> So, it just it attaches to the city
- 49:40because of the names on it.
- 49:41>> So, then they want to ask you questions
- 49:43or it comes [clears throat] to your
- 49:44political. So it comes to your
- 49:46playground at some point, but you have
- 49:47to clarify what's going on.
- 49:48>> Yeah. And then I just point them in the
- 49:50right direction. The two people you
- 49:52should talk to is your state assemblyman
- 49:54and your congressman, right? Talk to
- 49:56your state assemblymen. And the reason
- 49:57why I say that is because there is a
- 50:01bill that was passed AB32 or something
- 50:04like that, right? Um that was banning
- 50:06private prisons, right? Like that was
- 50:09the pitch is to ban private prisons in
- 50:11California. But when you actually, it
- 50:13was a good marketing piece, right? Ban
- 50:16private prisons. Ban private prisons.
- 50:18But when you actually read the bill,
- 50:20there were so many loopholes to where it
- 50:23didn't ban private prisons.
- 50:24>> Of course,
- 50:25>> sounded good,
- 50:26>> right? But like for example,
- 50:29I forgot the date, but like it was like
- 50:31June 1st of 2035, right? Is the last
- 50:36date that a contract can get approved.
- 50:39Well, when you read it the last day that
- 50:41a contract can get approved, well, that
- 50:43that means May 31st of 2035, I can just
- 50:47sign aundred-year contract and still be
- 50:51operable.
- 50:51>> Mhm.
- 50:52>> Right. So,
- 50:52>> there's loopholes. It's all operating
- 50:54agree.
- 50:54>> There's loopholes to it, right? So, you
- 50:56want to look good. You want to look like
- 50:57you want to stop private prisons. You
- 50:59want to do this, that, and the third.
- 51:00But if you want to stop something, you
- 51:03say as of December 1st,
- 51:05>> done
- 51:06>> 2030, it permanently closes.
- 51:10That's how you stop something.
- 51:11>> Yeah. And they left it open basically.
- 51:14>> So you guys have uh there's a facade.
- 51:16>> Just for show.
- 51:17>> You guys have a 1% it sales tax increase
- 51:20like on the ballot for now?
- 51:21>> Yeah, we got a 1% um sale tax increase
- 51:23um on our ballot. And what that is is
- 51:26everyone else's across the county is
- 51:288.75%. Right. LA is like at 10 11%.
- 51:32Yeah.
- 51:32>> Right. We're still at 7.75,
- 51:35>> right?
- 51:35>> What What How much like revenue does
- 51:37that bring
- 51:38>> right now? It would generate like three
- 51:39mill
- 51:39>> a year.
- 51:40>> A year just off of what we have right
- 51:42now.
- 51:42>> Just that 1%.
- 51:44>> That's three miles of road. [laughter]
- 51:45>> Yeah, pretty much.
- 51:46>> Or more officers, right? So, now that
- 51:48we're in a good position financially,
- 51:50right, if we wanted to, and I could be
- 51:53mistaken, but I believe because it's a
- 51:56it's a it's a tax, a sales tax, we can
- 51:59actually bond it out.
- 52:01>> Oh, okay.
- 52:01>> Right. We can bond it out and say, "Hey,
- 52:04we got 3 million coming in off of XY
- 52:06andZ.
- 52:08Can we do a a 20-year bond?"
- 52:10>> So, what does that mean?
- 52:11>> That we can get 20 years worth of money
- 52:13up front. Oh, okay.
- 52:14>> They just pay it back in increments.
- 52:16>> Yeah.
- 52:16>> As you get the money in every year.
- 52:18>> Oh, so you can make some moves. Yeah.
- 52:20Make like an investment for the city.
- 52:21>> So again, going back to like data
- 52:22centers, they can just come in and be
- 52:24like, "Hey, we'll take care of all
- 52:25that." You know what I mean?
- 52:26>> Yeah.
- 52:28I mean, right. Like you got to look at
- 52:30>> if it's if it's if it's like big tech,
- 52:32you know, that those pockets are deep.
- 52:34>> That's they say the um AI is the next um
- 52:38>> boom like the next like
- 52:39>> oil money, gold rush, that's the next.
- 52:42So if you got these people coming in
- 52:43like, "Hey, we could take care of that.
- 52:45You want more officers? Here's [ __ ] 3
- 52:46million. Here's [ __ ] 20."
- 52:47>> Cuz the the sheriff's department is
- 52:49contracted in.
- 52:50>> Yeah.
- 52:50>> You guys pay you pay them.
- 52:52>> The city pays them for Okay.
- 52:54>> So that's what a lot that that's where
- 52:56you know the next boom. But what people
- 52:58failed to understand like AI it's only
- 53:00like 20%.
- 53:02Right? It's only like 20% of data
- 53:04centers utilize some form of AI. Right?
- 53:06data centers really people say they want
- 53:09to we need another hospital up here in
- 53:11the high desert, right?
- 53:12>> [ __ ] no we don't.
- 53:13>> Well, that's what people say, right?
- 53:15Guess
- 53:16>> they we need a trauma center up here. We
- 53:17don't have one of those.
- 53:18>> That's what we need.
- 53:19>> S the one in Apple Valley. They're like
- 53:21a level. But anything serious, send them
- 53:24out.
- 53:24>> We still got to send them out.
- 53:25>> I went to the emergency room the other
- 53:26day. Good [ __ ] god, bro. Civil War,
- 53:29dude. I was like, did a bomb go off in
- 53:31here, bro? I was for
- 53:34>> my
- 53:36>> [laughter]
- 53:37>> We got you [ __ ] that.
- 53:40>> No, leave it. We don't edit. That's all
- 53:43of a sudden on the episode.
- 53:44>> Yeah, [laughter]
- 53:46>> Justin. Joe has AIDS.
- 53:47>> Yeah,
- 53:48>> butt plug [ __ ]
- 53:51>> Anyways,
- 53:52>> anyway,
- 53:53>> like hospitals are big usage use users
- 53:55of data centers.
- 53:55>> Oh, for sure.
- 53:56>> Hotels are big user of data centers.
- 53:58>> Everything is your phone, your computer,
- 54:01everything. your smart YouTube.
- 54:03Yeah,
- 54:04>> I'm looking at my I'm looking at my
- 54:05phone right now, right? I have Netflix,
- 54:08Peacock.
- 54:09>> That's right.
- 54:09>> Uh Apple TV, Stars, Prime, HBO Max, the
- 54:13water right now. Like, [laughter] like,
- 54:15you get what I'm saying? Like, and these
- 54:16are all streaming services and people
- 54:18don't even realize that [ __ ] You know
- 54:19what I mean? So much on you see these
- 54:22choo choo on [ __ ] on Instagram. To
- 54:24you [ __ ] out here using Grunk
- 54:26and AI, you're [ __ ] [ __ ] You're on
- 54:29Instagram streaming. What the [ __ ] do
- 54:31you think you're doing?
- 54:31>> It's all AI now.
- 54:33>> God,
- 54:33>> it's all data. We live in a society
- 54:35where everything is
- 54:38>> I miss I miss the '9s.
- 54:40>> Do you do you see that meme where they
- 54:41said I don't know it's a meme or fact,
- 54:44but it said house parties don't exist no
- 54:46more because people can't feel
- 54:47comfortable because of people with their
- 54:48phones.
- 54:49>> I'm like that's probably true.
- 54:50>> I saw Tiger Woods um you know he came
- 54:52back he started winning some
- 54:54championships again and he said dude
- 54:56it's different. He's like, "No one claps
- 54:58anymore
- 54:58>> because they're holding their phones."
- 55:00And it used to be, you know, you'd watch
- 55:01and you clap, but now they're like
- 55:02recording. He's like, "It's a different
- 55:04feel." It's like, "Yeah, the times are."
- 55:05>> You see the one that that popped up
- 55:07recently like, "Hey, like mom and it's
- 55:08like a kid to the parents like our
- 55:10generation."
- 55:10>> Yeah.
- 55:11>> Like how'd you guys get when there was
- 55:12no Uber? How did you guys get home?
- 55:14Drunk [laughter] like drunk.
- 55:15>> Sip and cruise.
- 55:16>> Yeah. Sip. Don't drink and drive. Sip
- 55:18and cruise.
- 55:19>> Yeah. But also too, like with the whole
- 55:21the whole We don't condone that by the
- 55:22way, right?
- 55:23>> Like the whole scandal with Victor Nap
- 55:24Valley, right? how they like benched how
- 55:26they suspended Victor's team for the
- 55:28week and made them forfeit.
- 55:30>> There was people that were comment right
- 55:32there was people that were commenting on
- 55:33one of the threads that was just like
- 55:35>> so they got suspended because a mascot
- 55:37flipped off the the other team like we
- 55:40did a lot of stuff that was way more
- 55:42horrible. I think they used to do they
- 55:44used to do like like Apple Valley would
- 55:46go bring bunch of dead rabbits, paint it
- 55:48orange,
- 55:49>> throw them all over the Victorville
- 55:50school. They then they would do the
- 55:52opposite like they they used to do wild
- 55:54like vandalism.
- 55:56I don't like they did spray painting
- 55:58>> and no one ever got
- 55:59>> like suspended, right? Like
- 56:01>> it was just a rivalry.
- 56:02>> It was just a robbery game, right? So it
- 56:03was crazy to see how a whole team Right.
- 56:06But that why because of phones.
- 56:08>> Why? Because kids recorded. Oh, look at
- 56:10the mascot. You know, like
- 56:11>> it's just I mean I liked it. It was a
- 56:13game.
- 56:14>> They came to the other side of the field
- 56:15and did it in their face.
- 56:16>> You think anybody sat with him on the
- 56:18bus? Shut up. He's just sitting there.
- 56:19[laughter]
- 56:20>> They got a W L cuz of you.
- 56:22>> It's always that's that's the biggest
- 56:23rivalry in the High Desert that game.
- 56:25>> Yeah. It was like
- 56:25>> It goes back so long.
- 56:27>> Yeah.
- 56:28>> Yeah. We need those rivals. That's what
- 56:29that's that's what drives up
- 56:30communities, you know, like like you
- 56:32know how much those schools you know how
- 56:33much those schools make from that game
- 56:34from
- 56:35>> like concessions to all that [ __ ] and
- 56:37>> stuff. Yeah.
- 56:38>> Like they sold out the game. people.
- 56:40>> You couldn't go getting turned away. A
- 56:43lot of people were getting turned away.
- 56:44You couldn't go into the game.
- 56:45>> Sold out game.
- 56:46>> Damn, that's crazy. Does Atlanta have an
- 56:48animal shelter?
- 56:49>> No.
- 56:50>> What do you guys What do you get them?
- 56:52>> No, I mean
- 56:53>> Be careful. Be careful.
- 56:54>> Yeah, Joe loves his [laughter] animals.
- 56:56>> Joe loves his animals. He'll [ __ ]
- 56:58He'll go That's a he'll die.
- 56:59>> I do. We We've taken care of I mean,
- 57:01we'll feed all the [ __ ] dogs, you
- 57:03know, that I haven't seen actually in a
- 57:04while to be honest. But um uh what do
- 57:07you guys do with how does that
- 57:08>> work? So we're contracted with with with
- 57:09with Barstow.
- 57:10>> Okay.
- 57:11>> Right. So uh we did we were contracted
- 57:13with the one out [clears throat] here in
- 57:14Apple Valley, right? But then they
- 57:16closed um and then there was other Apple
- 57:19Valley one and um that Apple Valley
- 57:21currently has but it was like
- 57:22>> is the one that was used to be off
- 57:24Central or Navajo closed? It's still
- 57:25more.
- 57:26>> That one's closed.
- 57:26>> That was a good one.
- 57:27>> That's where we used to all of our
- 57:28services were there. So now we contract
- 57:30with Bartow though, right? So we'll hold
- 57:32them in Alanto for like a week,
- 57:34>> right? Um and you know wait, but if
- 57:37they're there longer then we'll send
- 57:39them out to Barcel.
- 57:41>> You guys have like a a wild or loose dog
- 57:44problem out there because it's kind of
- 57:45desolate. They come and go. They have
- 57:47they have room.
- 57:47>> I would say yeah issue a nuisance.
- 57:50>> Yeah, I I would say yeah. But one of the
- 57:52things again the way I go about it you
- 57:55know is
- 57:56>> when it's a people problem,
- 57:58>> right? Like for sure. So, one of the
- 58:00ideas that I floated around to to my
- 58:02city manager was like, "Okay, if we're
- 58:04going to return a dog and if we're going
- 58:06to chip and we're going to make them go
- 58:07through that whole process, right, we
- 58:09also need to go to the homeowner and we
- 58:11need to inspect their home, right?
- 58:13Because this dog didn't just open the
- 58:15front door and walk out. There's either
- 58:17a broken fence, there's a whole there's
- 58:19something wrong with
- 58:20>> drop off, take you guys have a code
- 58:22enforcement." Yeah, we do. So, it was
- 58:25just that recommendation, right? Like,
- 58:27let's give them a citation. be like,
- 58:29"Hey, look, we found three holes, right?
- 58:32Fix this so that your dog doesn't leave
- 58:34anymore, right? Because
- 58:35>> should be common sense.
- 58:36>> We got to like it's the adult."
- 58:38>> Yeah.
- 58:39>> They're not taking care of the property.
- 58:40>> So, make them take care of the property
- 58:42before we go all extreme, right? If we
- 58:45don't have a solution for it and our
- 58:47solution is bar, right? But what a lot
- 58:48of people don't understand is
- 58:50>> running an animal shelter is expensive.
- 58:52>> Sure.
- 58:52>> And there is really not much money
- 58:54behind it.
- 58:55>> Yeah. Right.
- 58:56>> So, it's more for love of the
- 58:58>> But it's still at the end of the day,
- 58:59it's a business.
- 59:00>> It's a business, but a very expensive
- 59:02business, right? Why are you charging me
- 59:03$300 to get my dog out?
- 59:07>> We [laughter] got to pay the electric
- 59:08bill. That's why, Chooch, the state's
- 59:10not giving us money to run this. The
- 59:11county not giving us money. The city's
- 59:13not giving us money. Like, it's
- 59:14>> But there's people in there working.
- 59:15There's things going on. Yeah.
- 59:16>> Got to get paid. Veterinarians got to
- 59:18get paid. It's an expense, right? So,
- 59:20that's why for us like, "Oh, why don't
- 59:21you guys build one?" It's not expensive
- 59:23it is to build one. It's a lot cheaper.
- 59:25>> You're not getting your return on that.
- 59:27You're really not getting your return.
- 59:28Yeah.
- 59:30>> Yeah. Joe, how you feel now, buddy? Mr.
- 59:31Businessman.
- 59:32>> Well, I think some that million dollars
- 59:34for that pave. No, I'm just kidding.
- 59:36[laughter]
- 59:37Just open a contract with a local
- 59:38Chinese restaurant.
- 59:41>> That's not good.
- 59:44>> You guys, uh, what are the other ways
- 59:45you guys make money? The city? Property
- 59:47taxes.
- 59:48>> Property taxes, right? Um that's a whole
- 59:51another situation um that Alvalonto when
- 59:54I tell you that Alvalonto has been
- 59:56taking advantage of for decades that
- 59:58poor city has been taken advantage for
- 59:59decades.
- 1:00:00>> So was the money coming in and just not
- 1:00:01going to the right places or what can
- 1:00:02you minimal right? It's minimal. So Prop
- 1:00:0513, right? When when California passed
- 1:00:07that Prop 13, it um solidified specific
- 1:00:10percentage taxes, right, of of property
- 1:00:13tax at a cap, right? If you look at
- 1:00:15Alontos, I think ours isn't even at 1%.
- 1:00:20>> Other neighboring like pull
- 1:00:21[clears throat] it up, right? Since you
- 1:00:22have Google, but I think like
- 1:00:24neighboring cities in the high desert,
- 1:00:25their property taxes range between like
- 1:00:269 and 11%.
- 1:00:28>> Like how much they get of the amount
- 1:00:30that gets turned cuz California is like
- 1:00:331.4%, right? Or something like that.
- 1:00:35>> I don't know.
- 1:00:36>> I'm pretty sure
- 1:00:37>> I don't even know how it works. I just
- 1:00:38know it goes up every time a house.
- 1:00:39>> But school districts school districts
- 1:00:40typally get the most up every year,
- 1:00:42>> right? school districts typically get a
- 1:00:43big portion school. So that's why homes
- 1:00:45are really, you know, something that
- 1:00:47they look for.
- 1:00:48>> Did you see um Mike Gary's post the
- 1:00:50other day about how much it cost just to
- 1:00:51break? Not even to break ground to build
- 1:00:53a house.
- 1:00:54>> What was it?
- 1:00:54>> 53,000
- 1:00:56>> on a 2100T house.
- 1:00:58>> That's just the county city.
- 1:01:00>> That's just like fees just to be like,
- 1:01:02okay, you could build now and then you
- 1:01:03got to get into that was like school,
- 1:01:06all the county city fees, the water
- 1:01:09meter
- 1:01:09>> development impact. I I I know we're
- 1:01:11like we're we're talking about like
- 1:01:12local politics, but isn't it wild like
- 1:01:14all the money that's been sent out how
- 1:01:16it could be just sent back to the states
- 1:01:18and cities and it's just wild to me. It
- 1:01:20blows my mind.
- 1:01:22>> America would literally be the greatest
- 1:01:23>> you got to kick out to the Fed. You know
- 1:01:25what I mean? They don't give a goddamn
- 1:01:28It's the goddamn mafia
- 1:01:28>> on a big scale.
- 1:01:29>> Godamn mafia.
- 1:01:30>> America would be literally the greatest
- 1:01:31country in the world if we just kept all
- 1:01:32our own [ __ ]
- 1:01:33>> 100%.
- 1:01:34>> Like we'd have You'd never really have
- 1:01:35to leave America.
- 1:01:36>> For what?
- 1:01:37>> Never.
- 1:01:37>> But it's just
- 1:01:38>> Do you [clears throat] have an opinion
- 1:01:38on that?
- 1:01:39>> Yeah. like I [laughter] would have done
- 1:01:41like I look at COVID right and and I get
- 1:01:43and and this is like a world scale so
- 1:01:45I'm very ignorant to the world scale of
- 1:01:48politics right and the role that America
- 1:01:49plays but obviously one of the more
- 1:01:51dominous countries and and I don't know
- 1:01:52how many countries depend on America's
- 1:01:54finances right to the world right so a
- 1:01:58lot of it goes out but when I look at co
- 1:02:00when we had when we had co right
- 1:02:02>> I was just confused on how much money we
- 1:02:04were sending out
- 1:02:06>> right and I'm just like
- 1:02:07>> it was a money grab
- 1:02:09>> where Like why aren't we taking care of
- 1:02:10our vets? Like why are we bothered to
- 1:02:13people?
- 1:02:13>> That's one thing that bothers me, the
- 1:02:14vet thing. Like why are we do that
- 1:02:16today?
- 1:02:16>> 100%.
- 1:02:17>> You know, and it's crazy, right? I was
- 1:02:18just like,
- 1:02:20>> you know, kids, you know, taking
- 1:02:22advantage of the PPP loans and all of
- 1:02:24the type of scams and everything else
- 1:02:25that was going on, right? I'm just like,
- 1:02:26it it shouldn't have been that hard to
- 1:02:28figure out.
- 1:02:28>> Nope.
- 1:02:29>> Right. Like if you and you could have
- 1:02:30just pulled someone's taxes,
- 1:02:32>> right? It's statistically proven that a
- 1:02:34person's income doesn't drastically
- 1:02:36change year-over-year. It's pretty
- 1:02:38freaking
- 1:02:38>> politically wise. Some people
- 1:02:40>> politicians, right? But everyday people,
- 1:02:43forget politicians, right? But like
- 1:02:44everyday people who are forced to not go
- 1:02:46to work, who were forced to their lives
- 1:02:48drastically changed.
- 1:02:50>> Like why do we like limit who got
- 1:02:53funding or who got assistance or who got
- 1:02:54this and who got that, right? Like if
- 1:02:57you look at watch little experiment,
- 1:02:59right? And then Joe text me on the side
- 1:03:00if I'm tripping. But pull like your last
- 1:03:025 years taxes, you were pretty
- 1:03:03consistent on what you made. It wasn't
- 1:03:06drastically different unless you got a
- 1:03:08promotion, you got a new job, you
- 1:03:10changed the venture. We typically make
- 1:03:12right around the same
- 1:03:15>> of what we made the previous years.
- 1:03:16>> Mhm.
- 1:03:17>> Right.
- 1:03:17>> So, what what would be like considered a
- 1:03:19like a a scalable jump in your opinion?
- 1:03:21Like how much?
- 1:03:22>> 10%.
- 1:03:23>> Oh, that's a Yeah. Then
- 1:03:24>> that's a big jump.
- 1:03:25>> Look at the prices of everything. It's
- 1:03:27gone up.
- 1:03:28>> So, you're not necessarily going to get
- 1:03:30a 10% raise year after year.
- 1:03:32>> It's not normal. You don't get a 10%
- 1:03:33>> unless it's a big promotion. You get a
- 1:03:35quarter and employers are just like,
- 1:03:38"We're giving you a quarter raise.
- 1:03:40>> Oh my gosh, thank you so much." But
- 1:03:42that's really that's the reality. You
- 1:03:44don't get massive raises, right?
- 1:03:45>> Crumbs.
- 1:03:46>> Why didn't we just say, "Hey, submit
- 1:03:47your taxes on what you made the last 5
- 1:03:50years. That's what we're going to give
- 1:03:51you till we figure this out."
- 1:03:55>> Simple base.
- 1:03:55>> Simple base, right? Like
- 1:03:57>> a a a celebrity wouldn't have
- 1:03:59drastically changed his income if he
- 1:04:02wasn't shooting movies. Well, he's not
- 1:04:03shooting movies. So, if he made 20
- 1:04:05million, you have the full 20 million.
- 1:04:08That's what it would have been if co did
- 1:04:09a hit.
- 1:04:09>> Yeah.
- 1:04:10>> You made your 100,000, your 50,000, your
- 1:04:1280,000, my 60,000, right? Like, we're
- 1:04:15going to make what we make
- 1:04:17>> if the world wouldn't have shut down.
- 1:04:19>> But [clears throat] yet, now we're
- 1:04:20giving
- 1:04:21millions and millions and billions.
- 1:04:24>> You know, these kids who've never made a
- 1:04:26hundred grand,
- 1:04:29>> are running legit PPP scams,
- 1:04:31>> right? and making six figures. And
- 1:04:33>> you know what's crazy? There's always a
- 1:04:35scam going on. Always some kind of scam,
- 1:04:38man.
- 1:04:39>> People try and just [ __ ] yeah. Like find
- 1:04:43the gray area.
- 1:04:43>> I'm not even mad at him, but I'm like
- 1:04:44god damn like how do you guys figure
- 1:04:46this out? Like where do you guys sit
- 1:04:47down and sit down?
- 1:04:49>> Cuz I I've always said this and people
- 1:04:51get up not upset, but criminals are way
- 1:04:54smarter than people chasing them. You
- 1:04:56>> I mean like I'm not going to say it too
- 1:04:57derogatory, but criminal there's a
- 1:04:59reason like they're like a lot of them
- 1:05:00get away with [ __ ] They're way smarter
- 1:05:01than the people
- 1:05:03>> head of the game.
- 1:05:03>> Yeah.
- 1:05:04>> Head of the game.
- 1:05:04>> And sometimes when they go to vacation,
- 1:05:06they get even smarter. They get educated
- 1:05:07and they come back with like even more.
- 1:05:09I'm like, this is crazy.
- 1:05:10>> I noticed that in the weed game, dude.
- 1:05:11They always find the loopholes,
- 1:05:12>> dude. Always. It's always like you just
- 1:05:15got to hear about it. You're like, I
- 1:05:16can't believe I didn't think about that.
- 1:05:17Like on
- 1:05:18>> Yeah.
- 1:05:20>> No. No. We We play by the rules.
- 1:05:21>> Yeah.
- 1:05:22>> And Yeah. It [laughter]
- 1:05:23it it just Yeah. Yeah, it blows my mind
- 1:05:24like if like Adam said if we would be
- 1:05:26the greatest country in the whole
- 1:05:27[ __ ] world if we actually kept our
- 1:05:29financials here
- 1:05:30>> just take care of ourselves
- 1:05:31>> and just take care of the home.
- 1:05:32>> But like I will say on another note
- 1:05:34about the home or the veteran thing,
- 1:05:37>> I just don't understand the process
- 1:05:38because they have the they have the
- 1:05:40ability to take care of all their
- 1:05:41veterans. Yes. And maybe some have
- 1:05:43issues and don't want to be taken care
- 1:05:44of like they go out on the street are
- 1:05:45homeless because I know there's some
- 1:05:46guys that like I've talked to personally
- 1:05:48that have served four to six years and
- 1:05:51then they've gone into with the VA and
- 1:05:53they're getting a check for four or five
- 1:05:54grand a month for the rest of their life
- 1:05:56>> and they only serve four years.
- 1:05:57>> Yeah.
- 1:05:57>> I'm like why didn't I do that [ __ ]
- 1:05:59>> Yeah.
- 1:05:59>> You know what I mean? So there is people
- 1:06:01that do take they use the system the
- 1:06:02what the right way. Yeah.
- 1:06:04>> But there's others that don't. So what's
- 1:06:05the mis where's the misstep? Do you
- 1:06:07think it's the the miss the miss the
- 1:06:09ones who don't they don't know what
- 1:06:11they're doing? Maybe they think that
- 1:06:13it's just going to be taken care of and
- 1:06:14given to them.
- 1:06:15>> I mean, you got to apply yourself a
- 1:06:17little bit, you know, in life and kind
- 1:06:18of go ask questions and poke around and
- 1:06:21see what you can get. There's nothing
- 1:06:22wrong with a no,
- 1:06:23>> right?
- 1:06:23>> No, no, no. Okay, cool. Like, let me let
- 1:06:25me re-educate myself. But I don't know.
- 1:06:28Like I just I know there's it could be
- 1:06:29taken care of. So, like when people
- 1:06:31like, "Oh, we could take care of the
- 1:06:32veteran." Yeah, there might be a like a
- 1:06:34better way to go about it. But I think
- 1:06:36there is a system there that does do
- 1:06:37some good.
- 1:06:38>> It definitely sucks that it's even an
- 1:06:40issue. You know, it should even be an
- 1:06:42issue. Like, our veterans should be just
- 1:06:43take care of, especially if you go out
- 1:06:45and serve and
- 1:06:47you should have a home when you come,
- 1:06:48you should have a home.
- 1:06:50>> You should have all these things taken
- 1:06:51care of. Especially if you go serve or
- 1:06:52you get injured or anything. And if you
- 1:06:54come home, man, you're home. You should
- 1:06:55have a free home in my opinion. You
- 1:06:56should be, you know, because you gave
- 1:06:58your I mean, let's be real here. There's
- 1:06:59one thing this country is good at,
- 1:07:00probably not so much right now. It's
- 1:07:02[ __ ] war. So, you know what I mean?
- 1:07:04and and we're always in business in that
- 1:07:07area. It's like for instance, there's a
- 1:07:09one of the airmen that got well one of
- 1:07:11the there was the the refilling that got
- 1:07:12blown up over I think somewhere over
- 1:07:14Iraq or Iran during this conflict. The
- 1:07:16VA denied the family rights because it's
- 1:07:19not a war.
- 1:07:20>> Oh wow.
- 1:07:21>> True [ __ ] Look it up. True [ __ ] They
- 1:07:24deny the It's on that new that news
- 1:07:26thing we follow. No [ __ ] What's it
- 1:07:28called?
- 1:07:28>> No [ __ ] news. No [ __ ]
- 1:07:30>> Yeah, it was them the
- 1:07:31>> I think it was one of the [ __ ]
- 1:07:33our bases in one of the Gulf States that
- 1:07:35we have a base at got like six or eight
- 1:07:37of them. Yeah, they got but but see
- 1:07:39that's the crazy part. This this is this
- 1:07:41is the thing. If I'm a freaking steroid
- 1:07:43pthead and I can see the fact that we're
- 1:07:45overextending,
- 1:07:47you know what I mean? Like it happened
- 1:07:48with happened with Rome. It happened
- 1:07:50with Germany. It happened with uh uh
- 1:07:53France under Napoleon. When you
- 1:07:54overextend the empire, you're
- 1:07:56vulnerable. You're you're you're you're
- 1:07:58having too many fronts. So you have all
- 1:08:00these we have all these bases everywhere
- 1:08:02to have quick reaction forces for
- 1:08:05situations because we always have
- 1:08:06carriers in the golf. We have we always
- 1:08:08have somewhere some type of presence. If
- 1:08:10we actually were to like look at like we
- 1:08:12just said we have this beautiful like
- 1:08:14Adam said that beautiful base that's
- 1:08:15over there that they closed down. You
- 1:08:18could open that up. Bring that bring
- 1:08:20just bring [ __ ] home.
- 1:08:21>> You know how many people are here in
- 1:08:23this high desert because of that base
- 1:08:24because they got stationed there and
- 1:08:25they built a family there and then they
- 1:08:27stayed here.
- 1:08:27>> I heard it's full of asbestous. Yeah,
- 1:08:29they built the housing part of it.
- 1:08:30>> You can't knock it down because it'll go
- 1:08:31into the air.
- 1:08:32>> So like when it's part of the mob and
- 1:08:34the whole mafia [ __ ]
- 1:08:36>> they knew
- 1:08:37>> the effects of what they were doing, but
- 1:08:39it wouldn't affect them in their
- 1:08:40lifetime.
- 1:08:42>> Like they would be passed away and gone
- 1:08:43by the time 50 to 70 years by the time
- 1:08:46the speesus became a problem. So they
- 1:08:47pumped it out anyways.
- 1:08:49>> Interesting.
- 1:08:49>> But they made so much [ __ ] money. A
- 1:08:51scam.
- 1:08:52>> Yeah.
- 1:08:52>> Not a scam, but the money.
- 1:08:53>> We'll worry about it later. It's not a
- 1:08:54problem.
- 1:08:55>> Yeah. That they knew what that was going
- 1:08:56to happen. But yeah, any like so like
- 1:08:58when I did underground there's like a
- 1:09:00lot of old pipe water that's asbestos.
- 1:09:03>> Like you have to have a um environmental
- 1:09:06>> Yeah.
- 1:09:07>> has to come in and you have to put in a
- 1:09:08certain thing that seals up and they
- 1:09:10have to take it all away and take it to
- 1:09:11like a landfill and dispose of it. They
- 1:09:12just usually bury it. Don't even like
- 1:09:14break it up or do anything. Just break
- 1:09:16tear it all down. Break it apart. like
- 1:09:17the the school like with um where my
- 1:09:20wife works. A lot of the old old school
- 1:09:22like elementary schools especially um
- 1:09:24buildings are especially in the roof and
- 1:09:26[ __ ] So now they just put a new roof
- 1:09:28around it and cover it all.
- 1:09:30>> You can't take it down like
- 1:09:31>> Yeah. You can't you can't It's only
- 1:09:33dangerous once you
- 1:09:34>> you can't expose Yeah. You can't expose
- 1:09:35it.
- 1:09:36>> How many times have How irritating is it
- 1:09:39when you you guys sit down and when you
- 1:09:41have people come in and try to get their
- 1:09:42three minutes of fame and
- 1:09:45>> does that annoy you? It's kind of funny.
- 1:09:46It it doesn't like it doesn't annoy me.
- 1:09:48>> Well, you probably shut up, sit down.
- 1:09:49>> There's some that come in emotionally.
- 1:09:52I'll get over there. It probably comes
- 1:09:54in like emotionally charged or educated.
- 1:09:56You can probably tell right away.
- 1:09:57>> You you can tell right away, right? But
- 1:09:58one of the things like with me, man,
- 1:10:00like it's bigger picture, right? Like
- 1:10:03you're going to say what you're going to
- 1:10:04say. If you really want to sit down and
- 1:10:05get like like talk to me about it,
- 1:10:07here's my number, right? If you just
- 1:10:09want to come and you know say what you
- 1:10:10want to say, like give you three
- 1:10:12minutes. Thank you. Next. like, you
- 1:10:16know, and but but the biggest thing for
- 1:10:18me and and it's probably
- 1:10:21disrespectful um to to to a point is if
- 1:10:26you don't put your address on a speaker
- 1:10:27card, right? I'm not going to assume
- 1:10:29that you're from Alto.
- 1:10:32>> So, you have that that that happens.
- 1:10:33>> Oh, all the time. Right. Like, so we'll
- 1:10:35give a speaker card that says your name,
- 1:10:37what are you speaking on, your address,
- 1:10:38right? If if if people don't put down
- 1:10:40their address,
- 1:10:41>> you're not even going to call. I already
- 1:10:42know. I have to call them, but I already
- 1:10:44know that there's a high probability
- 1:10:46they don't live in all.
- 1:10:48>> Mhm.
- 1:10:48>> Right. And then I can listen and I know
- 1:10:51enough if it's politically motivated.
- 1:10:53>> Right. Cuz everyone says the same stuff,
- 1:10:56>> right? It's a script, right? It's a over
- 1:10:59and over.
- 1:11:00>> It's what they're hearing. So they just
- 1:11:01repeat it to you. So you can already
- 1:11:03tell like, "All right, this is where
- 1:11:04this going."
- 1:11:04>> Okay. You're not even here. Okay,
- 1:11:06perfect. Right.
- 1:11:07>> But because for me, like, yeah, I want
- 1:11:08to hear you. And even if you're a hater,
- 1:11:10like even if you can't stand me, I'm
- 1:11:12gonna listen, right? And I'm gonna
- 1:11:14listen to you, resonant or not. But it's
- 1:11:16also going to help me understand. All
- 1:11:17right, that's emotion. That's emotion.
- 1:11:19That's emotion. It's emotion. All right.
- 1:11:22Dang. That's what happened.
- 1:11:23>> So there's the issue,
- 1:11:25>> right? All right. Bet. You know, and I'm
- 1:11:26still going to try, you know, because
- 1:11:29whether you like me or not, I'm still
- 1:11:31going to like I want to do good. You're
- 1:11:33going to do your job.
- 1:11:33>> I'm going to do my job, right? Like,
- 1:11:35okay, bet. Here's the issue.
- 1:11:37>> Okay. Let me see if I can fix that
- 1:11:39issue.
- 1:11:39>> Yeah.
- 1:11:40>> Right. And then if they appreciate it,
- 1:11:42they appreciate it. If they
- 1:11:43[clears throat] don't, they don't.
- 1:11:44Right. Some people, you know, my dad
- 1:11:46taught me
- 1:11:47>> like not everyone's gonna like you.
- 1:11:48>> Yeah.
- 1:11:49>> Facts.
- 1:11:49>> Like just do your job. At the end of the
- 1:11:51day, when I'm done being mayor, like
- 1:11:53>> I'm going to be able to sleep well at
- 1:11:54night and I sleep well at night right
- 1:11:56now because I know I'm doing my best
- 1:11:59>> for my community. Like Alonto will for
- 1:12:02sure be a much better city when I'm done
- 1:12:05than what it was when I got it.
- 1:12:06>> What's the plan on being done? like you
- 1:12:08going to
- 1:12:08>> So when I got into the game, um God said
- 1:12:1110 years, right? Like be mayor for 10
- 1:12:13years. That pretty much in two more
- 1:12:15years, right? And uh in 2028 will be the
- 1:12:1810 year map. But then I'm going to just,
- 1:12:20you know, I'm I'mma pray. I'm going ask
- 1:12:22God. I'm like, "All right, big guy. So
- 1:12:23what's up?" You know what I mean? We got
- 1:12:24some great stuff down the pipeline for
- 1:12:26me now. I'm getting close.
- 1:12:28>> You don't want to give up yet? No. Huh.
- 1:12:30>> I want to finish specific projects.
- 1:12:32>> Yeah.
- 1:12:33>> Right. like we got some great framework
- 1:12:36that could really petition and set up
- 1:12:38the city to be the gem of the high
- 1:12:40desert, right? In our own lane. I'm not
- 1:12:43trying to be victim. I'm not trying to
- 1:12:44be the metropolitan, right? I'm not
- 1:12:46trying to be Hisperia. I'm trying to be
- 1:12:48the workforce and the workforce
- 1:12:49development for the high desert, right?
- 1:12:52Like I want people to be able to get
- 1:12:54trained on the skill set of a job. I
- 1:12:56want them to be able to work in the
- 1:12:58community, right? And then they can go
- 1:12:59back home, right? Like that's what I
- 1:13:01want. I want to bring in the jobs
- 1:13:03because we're a commuter region. We
- 1:13:05can't change that unless we bring in the
- 1:13:06jobs.
- 1:13:06>> Yeah.
- 1:13:07>> Right. So for me, I was very fortunate,
- 1:13:09right, that I had a two parent
- 1:13:11household. My mom and dad worked one or
- 1:13:13two jobs. My mom stayed at home. So for
- 1:13:15me, I didn't have to worry about who I
- 1:13:17was getting raised by,
- 1:13:18>> right? I had a mom 24/7,
- 1:13:21>> you know? So I want to be able to give
- 1:13:22back time to parents. How can I do that?
- 1:13:26But they're spending 15 hours a week on
- 1:13:28the road,
- 1:13:30>> right? That's a start. the cost of
- 1:13:31committing right now
- 1:13:32>> plus the cost of committing right so a
- 1:13:33lot of the things that we can fix we can
- 1:13:35fix if we bring the opportunities
- 1:13:37>> to the desert right so I have like my
- 1:13:39own vision
- 1:13:40>> right that that I want to fulfill and
- 1:13:41it's very much in that direction and I'm
- 1:13:44going to weigh out pros and cons cuz no
- 1:13:46decision is a perfect decision
- 1:13:48>> right bringing in cannabis wasn't a
- 1:13:50perfect decision it was frowned upon
- 1:13:53but
- 1:13:54>> has it panned out
- 1:13:55>> it's panned out amazing
- 1:13:56>> good
- 1:13:57>> it's closed our structural deficit right
- 1:13:58we generated
- 1:14:00$5.8 million the last year in tax
- 1:14:03revenue. So like that alone almost
- 1:14:05closed my structural deficit.
- 1:14:07>> Wow.
- 1:14:07>> Right. So now I'm not starting negative
- 1:14:09$6.5 million.
- 1:14:11>> I'm starting negative like a mill. Now
- 1:14:14that's doable.
- 1:14:15>> Now you're going to you're going to
- 1:14:16collect that this year.
- 1:14:16>> Like you get what I'm saying? Now that's
- 1:14:18doable. Now now I'm in a position where
- 1:14:19like
- 1:14:20>> we're out of the grave and like we can
- 1:14:22see the light. We got some light at the
- 1:14:24end of the tunnel. So all these things
- 1:14:26that we've done,
- 1:14:27>> we've done it with no money. So, does
- 1:14:29that translate over to improvements for
- 1:14:30the city? Obviously,
- 1:14:31>> exactly. Right.
- 1:14:32>> Has any of the other uh cities or mayors
- 1:14:36or councils have reached out to you guys
- 1:14:37about cannabis? Like,
- 1:14:38>> yeah.
- 1:14:39>> Our region, our region's not ready for
- 1:14:40it, right? Barcel is the only one that
- 1:14:42has, you know, and and um
- 1:14:44>> it's because they had the capacity to
- 1:14:46kind of change like the way they
- 1:14:47outfitted the outlets were abandoned.
- 1:14:50>> Yeah.
- 1:14:50>> So, it makes sense. Now, it creates
- 1:14:52money. You know what I mean? But
- 1:14:53>> you think Apple Valley won't do it cuz
- 1:14:54like you said, boomers, they're like
- 1:14:55good old boys dope. They ain't doing
- 1:14:58nothing out there.
- 1:14:59>> I'm glad he's not going to do the same.
- 1:15:01>> Asparia actually had it.
- 1:15:02>> They have delivery.
- 1:15:03>> They had the medical delivery, but I
- 1:15:05heard they closed.
- 1:15:06>> They shut all of those down.
- 1:15:08>> Their code enforcement's tough in
- 1:15:09Asperia. They don't play.
- 1:15:11>> So, it's it's, you know, I say it's good
- 1:15:13for us, right? Because we kind of get
- 1:15:15to,
- 1:15:16>> you know, monopolize monopolize this
- 1:15:18industry. Well, when they think of like
- 1:15:19Atlanta is a staple in the world, I
- 1:15:21think of wheat.
- 1:15:22>> Yeah. People around the world know you
- 1:15:23can go to Atlanta and like
- 1:15:24>> Atlanta has been put on the map as far
- 1:15:26as the cannabis industry and people
- 1:15:27>> But they also have some really good
- 1:15:28other bit the um General Atomics right
- 1:15:31there.
- 1:15:32>> Yeah, we got General Atomics. They're
- 1:15:33the
- 1:15:34>> They built the Predator Drones.
- 1:15:35>> Yeah. And then you have right on the
- 1:15:36other side um
- 1:15:39Fibercon.
- 1:15:40>> Yeah. Fiber Fiber Fiber.
- 1:15:41>> Yep. All the uh the bathtubs for new
- 1:15:43constructions. Right. We have
- 1:15:45>> he uh he packed up and moved away but
- 1:15:47left his left his location here, moved
- 1:15:49one to Mexico, built a place and then
- 1:15:51built one in Idaho, but he kept this is
- 1:15:53his main hub.
- 1:15:54>> Oh wow.
- 1:15:55>> So it's obviously, you know, he got some
- 1:15:56good stuff out there.
- 1:15:57>> We got some good careers. We got
- 1:15:58Northwest Pipe. Um we had the Boring
- 1:16:00Company for a minute, right?
- 1:16:01>> Yeah. What happened with that?
- 1:16:03>> So um Governor Nuome didn't give, you
- 1:16:06know, the Boring Company the credits
- 1:16:07that they were wanting to to stay. They
- 1:16:09wanted some tax credits, but uh they
- 1:16:11were gonna make Alvalancho their
- 1:16:13corporate office for the Boring Company,
- 1:16:15right? But he wanted tax credits to
- 1:16:17stay. They said no. So um he said, "All
- 1:16:19right, bet. I'm pack up and I'm going go
- 1:16:21to Texas."
- 1:16:21>> So you got LWP has that huge transfer
- 1:16:24station. That thing's massive and it's
- 1:16:26only growing.
- 1:16:27>> And it's crazy is none of that power
- 1:16:28stays in Alonto.
- 1:16:29>> No, it goes
- 1:16:30>> and we have a power issue, right? Like
- 1:16:31we have a power issue in Avalon. So
- 1:16:34there's specific strains, right, that
- 1:16:35that that we have in Avalancho that like
- 1:16:38is limiting us right now from really
- 1:16:40being able to have that like Nike
- 1:16:42effect, right? Like in business,
- 1:16:43everyone talks about you want that Nike
- 1:16:45effect in your business, right? We have
- 1:16:48800 homes in Plant Cheek, right? Um um
- 1:16:53track homes, new development.
- 1:16:54>> Yeah, new development homes, right? Uh
- 1:16:56we have right now
- 1:16:595 million square feet of industrial
- 1:17:01warehousing ready to go. Right.
- 1:17:03industrial manufacturing jobs. We have
- 1:17:05like another 8 million coming before the
- 1:17:07planning commission in like October,
- 1:17:09November. So that's 13 million square
- 1:17:13feet of industrial manufacturing
- 1:17:14warehousing in our pipeline.
- 1:17:15>> This translates to a lot of jobs.
- 1:17:17>> A lot of jobs. For every million square
- 1:17:19feet, it's estimated like 1,200
- 1:17:22temporary jobs,
- 1:17:23>> but between like 7 and 800 permanent
- 1:17:27jobs. Plus, like a lot of people I kind
- 1:17:28of got not frustrated, but I was
- 1:17:30listening to the town hall meeting not
- 1:17:32to go off your thing. We'll come back to
- 1:17:33this, but [snorts]
- 1:17:35um they're complaining about they want
- 1:17:37to do that new
- 1:17:38>> Yeah.
- 1:17:38>> commercial.
- 1:17:39>> Big one.
- 1:17:39>> Yeah. It's big, dude. It's good for the
- 1:17:41city.
- 1:17:41>> 3.8 million.
- 1:17:42>> Yeah. And then everybody's like the
- 1:17:43infrastructurees there. That's why they
- 1:17:45plan and develop all this so that they
- 1:17:47could put the infrastructure for the
- 1:17:48town and they put it all in and then
- 1:17:50everybody benefits like and the people
- 1:17:52are complaining it's not we're not
- 1:17:53ready. This that they have to put it all
- 1:17:54in.
- 1:17:55>> Yeah.
- 1:17:55>> It's in their development. It's in the
- 1:17:57the the the what do you call it? The um
- 1:17:59>> point of sale sex. Oh, the the the
- 1:18:02>> there's like community development
- 1:18:04agreements,
- 1:18:04>> but before that when they they they
- 1:18:06check all the environmental
- 1:18:07>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. SQL studies, all the
- 1:18:10Yeah. All of those they they put them in
- 1:18:11there, right? And good partners will
- 1:18:14good partners will say, "Yeah, we'll
- 1:18:15bring the sewer out. We'll pay the
- 1:18:16roads. We'll do this. We'll do that."
- 1:18:18Because it's a part of development.
- 1:18:19[clears throat]
- 1:18:20>> And the cool thing about all that is
- 1:18:21like local undergrounds, local
- 1:18:23companies, local people get those jobs.
- 1:18:25So it just generates money for
- 1:18:26everybody.
- 1:18:27>> People don't have to commute down the
- 1:18:28hill for work, huh?
- 1:18:29>> They're commuting locally.
- 1:18:30>> Yeah, exactly.
- 1:18:31>> And and where are they going to spend
- 1:18:32their money? Locally. Yeah.
- 1:18:34>> Right. Cuz what's going to happen if
- 1:18:35they work in Ontario?
- 1:18:36>> They're hungry. They're
- 1:18:38>> down there. They're going to eat down
- 1:18:40there. They're going to, you know, drink
- 1:18:41down there.
- 1:18:41>> They're filling up their gas down there.
- 1:18:42They're all
- 1:18:43>> fill their gas down there, right? And
- 1:18:44then where do all the roads? You got the
- 1:18:46measure eye, right? It's it's going
- 1:18:49there because that's where it was spent,
- 1:18:50>> right? It's kind of like with Amazon.
- 1:18:52You guys remember um Amazon was on this
- 1:18:54massive push of building all the
- 1:18:56distribution centers, right? What a lot
- 1:18:58of people don't don't don't understand
- 1:18:59and it's we're still going through this
- 1:19:02um like through legislation. But Amazon
- 1:19:06the tax doesn't go back to the city
- 1:19:08where the person bought it. So like I
- 1:19:10live in Alonto. Everything that I shot
- 1:19:12on Amazon, the tax doesn't come to
- 1:19:14Walonto. It stays in the distribution
- 1:19:17center where it came out of.
- 1:19:18>> Yep.
- 1:19:18>> So they came out of Ontario. Ontario
- 1:19:21Ontario is getting all of the taxes.
- 1:19:24>> So, Victor has that hub. They're getting
- 1:19:26a bunch of dough out of there, huh?
- 1:19:27>> Yep.
- 1:19:28>> So, we just um on some like other
- 1:19:30committees like house cities and stuff
- 1:19:32like that. Um there's a taxation and
- 1:19:34revenue uh policy committee and like the
- 1:19:37cities the the the mega cities that had
- 1:19:40the distribution centers like they were
- 1:19:41beefing like city managers were fighting
- 1:19:44big bucks. Like, but what was dope is
- 1:19:47Victor was just like,
- 1:19:48>> "Eh, we're going to lose 30 million.
- 1:19:50It's all right. It'll go to our
- 1:19:51neighbors."
- 1:19:52>> Like, Victorville wasn't being like
- 1:19:53punks about it, right? But other big
- 1:19:55cities,
- 1:19:56>> didn't they build the one off the 15,
- 1:19:58the Amazon?
- 1:19:59>> Not not the 15, but off of a Main Street
- 1:20:01in Asparia.
- 1:20:02>> So, who got the Asperia then?
- 1:20:03>> That's Asparia. Yeah.
- 1:20:05>> So, yeah.
- 1:20:05>> So, they would get a big tax base,
- 1:20:07right? But they're they're trying to set
- 1:20:08it up right now to where um legislation
- 1:20:11wise where they're going to take it away
- 1:20:14from the big boxes and it's going to go
- 1:20:16to the cities
- 1:20:18>> because Amazon changed the game.
- 1:20:19>> That's crazy. That's how much money is
- 1:20:20involved in that business because it's
- 1:20:22doing that like legislation going to
- 1:20:23that type of thing where it's affecting
- 1:20:25cities. That's big bucks.
- 1:20:26>> That's the lobbyist, right? All type of
- 1:20:28stuff.
- 1:20:28>> That's why people That's why they get
- 1:20:29paid to play. Well, you lobbyists are
- 1:20:31just um
- 1:20:33>> not conmen, but they're in there to
- 1:20:34convince you to do their way, throw
- 1:20:36money around
- 1:20:37>> the salesman.
- 1:20:37>> Yeah, snake oil.
- 1:20:39>> Egg salesman. Snake oil.
- 1:20:40>> So, that shifted. So, I hopefully like
- 1:20:42in a year or two, it'll probably like
- 1:20:44get diverted back to the cities,
- 1:20:46>> right? So, that that's beneficial,
- 1:20:48right? Cuz that's not in city budgets
- 1:20:50right now,
- 1:20:50>> right? But what what a lot of people
- 1:20:52don't they don't talk about it is and I
- 1:20:55didn't know this before I got involved
- 1:20:56in in politics but like there's livable
- 1:20:59wage guarantees in contracts right in
- 1:21:03governmental contracts where their
- 1:21:05expenses go up automatically with no
- 1:21:07additional services
- 1:21:09>> like a livable wage tax right so imagine
- 1:21:12your expenses are going to go up
- 1:21:13automatically four to 6% year over year
- 1:21:16over year and there's no additional
- 1:21:18resources being added Right. So when
- 1:21:21people say, "Oh, they're just going
- 1:21:23after the money. The cities are just
- 1:21:24they just want the money."
- 1:21:27Not, we don't just want the money, but
- 1:21:29like we got to be able to still pay our
- 1:21:31bills.
- 1:21:31>> Mhm.
- 1:21:32>> Right. If like I said, and that's why I
- 1:21:34treat it like a business.
- 1:21:35>> If you're not bringing in enough money
- 1:21:37and your [clears throat] expenses are
- 1:21:38automatically going to grow, you're
- 1:21:41going to always have a deficit.
- 1:21:42>> Well, sitting here talking to you, I
- 1:21:43almost feel like people think a city is
- 1:21:45a service,
- 1:21:46>> right?
- 1:21:47>> Like you're you're explaining it's more
- 1:21:48of a business. You know what I Like it's
- 1:21:49a people think the city's there to
- 1:21:51service me,
- 1:21:52>> take care of whatever I need. Like no,
- 1:21:53it's not really,
- 1:21:54>> right? Like they feel like it's a right,
- 1:21:55right? Like
- 1:21:56>> the city, the city, the city. People
- 1:21:59complaining, well, hold on. It is a it's
- 1:22:01a business. And if you're if you're that
- 1:22:02business owner, you'd [ __ ] make sure
- 1:22:04your dividends at the end of the year
- 1:22:05were profitable. Just a normal
- 1:22:07businessman would try to be that way.
- 1:22:09>> You would want to, right? You would want
- 1:22:10to make sure that you're thriving. And
- 1:22:11that's what was hurting all the long,
- 1:22:13right? Was that we had no tax base
- 1:22:14coming So would you say because it's you
- 1:22:17said three decades of corruption
- 1:22:18>> there was money going in it just wasn't
- 1:22:20being
- 1:22:21>> diverted or allocated to the right
- 1:22:22places. Yeah,
- 1:22:24>> positive. We know that. You don't have
- 1:22:25to say like where
- 1:22:27>> I'll say it.
- 1:22:27>> Yeah. Other guy. Okay, that's cool.
- 1:22:29>> Right. Like it was it was unfortunate,
- 1:22:31man. We had
- 1:22:32>> I mean that's why somebody got
- 1:22:34>> incarcerated and in trouble because of
- 1:22:36what
- 1:22:36>> proofed.
- 1:22:37>> Yeah.
- 1:22:38>> Yeah. Okay.
- 1:22:38>> So in the '9s there was backtoback. So
- 1:22:40the reason why we have the sheriffs now
- 1:22:42is there was backto back all the police
- 1:22:44captains. Yeah.
- 1:22:45>> That had chop shops in the city.
- 1:22:48[laughter] Right. So they were illegally
- 1:22:49impounding like residents cars.
- 1:22:51>> Yeah.
- 1:22:51>> Right. and and taunting them. Yeah. So,
- 1:22:53like my grandma, she moved from Texas to
- 1:22:55live with us, right? And she had this,
- 1:22:57she had this big body Cadillac,
- 1:22:58[laughter] right? And I remember being a
- 1:22:59kid, right?
- 1:23:00>> I remember being a kid playing
- 1:23:01basketball on the street and
- 1:23:02[clears throat] one day my grandma's
- 1:23:03Cadillac was gone, right? So then like
- 1:23:06>> 3 4 days, a week later goes by and I see
- 1:23:08my grandma's Cadillac like driving
- 1:23:10through my neighborhood. I was just
- 1:23:12like, "What happened to my grandma's
- 1:23:14car?" But I'm just a kid. I'm not
- 1:23:15putting two.
- 1:23:16>> You're just putting You're putting the
- 1:23:17pieces but not connecting them.
- 1:23:18>> And then my dad My dad, man, rest in
- 1:23:21peace, Pops. Like I love that. I love
- 1:23:22that man. I miss him so much. But like
- 1:23:24he gave all the police officers
- 1:23:25nicknames, right? Like Eagle Eye, this
- 1:23:28that, you know, cuz he was beefing with
- 1:23:30the cops.
- 1:23:30>> So they finally their their game caught
- 1:23:32up to him. But what could you do as a as
- 1:23:34a community when they're
- 1:23:35>> when they're the law enforcement, right?
- 1:23:36>> It's old school. Like it was probably
- 1:23:37like I'm the judge, the the the jury.
- 1:23:41>> So back toback captains, right? Boom.
- 1:23:43That happened, right? That that was, you
- 1:23:46know, '9s corruption. Sheriffs came in,
- 1:23:48done a phenomenal job, right? My dad
- 1:23:50loved them, you know, all the time that
- 1:23:52they were there. Then we had Little
- 1:23:54League had some embezzlements, right? Um
- 1:23:56the Little League president's wife was
- 1:23:58embezzling money, right? Um and then,
- 1:24:02you know, the recent Well, not recent,
- 1:24:04eight years ago, right? But with the
- 1:24:05ones that we had with cannabis, but like
- 1:24:07that's the '9s, the 2000s, the teens.
- 1:24:09>> So, it's setting you up for now. You're
- 1:24:10just trying to come out of that.
- 1:24:12>> And and it for the longest time, like we
- 1:24:14would say like I'm still paying for the
- 1:24:16sins of my fathers, right? Of my past
- 1:24:17fathers. like just bad decisions, you
- 1:24:20know, just passing kicking the bucket
- 1:24:22down, kicking the bucket down.
- 1:24:23>> So, you're probably still breaking that
- 1:24:24stigma
- 1:24:25>> for sure, right? But although I'm most
- 1:24:27definitely is respected on a completely
- 1:24:29different level everywhere else, right?
- 1:24:32Like, yeah, we're still the armpit quote
- 1:24:34unquote of the high desert. You know, we
- 1:24:36still have the reputation out of ghetto,
- 1:24:38out of this, out of that. Yeah, we're
- 1:24:40about to be out of your mind, you know,
- 1:24:41in four to five more years because we're
- 1:24:44not thinking yester years. Like I'm
- 1:24:47focused on the future. Like what's gonna
- 1:24:49transform my community overnight?
- 1:24:53>> You know what I mean? What's going to
- 1:24:54make it what's going to make Alvalon
- 1:24:55that city where people want to move to?
- 1:24:58>> And I think a lot of it's out of sight,
- 1:25:00out of mind out there. People don't go
- 1:25:01out there to see. So like you show up or
- 1:25:03you go like when did this pop up? When
- 1:25:04did this pop up? You know what I mean?
- 1:25:06>> True. Yeah.
- 1:25:07>> There's different things.
- 1:25:07>> We're on the way to Bishop,
- 1:25:08>> right? So we have them. We have a
- 1:25:10baseball stadium. We have Mavericks.
- 1:25:11>> What's up with that? What's that?
- 1:25:12>> Um so we use that as an event center,
- 1:25:14right? We do a lot of events. You know,
- 1:25:16Cannabis has brought some amazing events
- 1:25:17there, like 17,000 people in two days,
- 1:25:20right? Um, so we use it in the event
- 1:25:22center right now.
- 1:25:23>> The block party is getting pretty big.
- 1:25:24Detour.
- 1:25:25>> Yep. Detour is having their Halloween
- 1:25:26one. Um, there's a couple of other ones,
- 1:25:29right? So, we had a great like uh
- 1:25:31Veterans Day weekend, right, with um
- 1:25:33like monster trucks and things of that
- 1:25:34sort. So, like for me, I I say it all
- 1:25:36the time, man, like it's owned by the
- 1:25:38city right now, but I really believe it
- 1:25:40needs to be in the private sector. I
- 1:25:41think someone needs to buy it and run it
- 1:25:44and hold amazing events there.
- 1:25:47>> The off-road stuff's getting pretty big
- 1:25:48out there, too. Those events trucks out
- 1:25:50Terr. They do a great job. Their events
- 1:25:53are amazing, man. I love
- 1:25:54>> Which one they have out there, too? The
- 1:25:56Was it? Dirt bikes and
- 1:25:57>> you used to have the Grand Prix.
- 1:25:58>> Yeah, the Grand Prix was amazing.
- 1:26:00>> Bring that back.
- 1:26:02>> I would love to bring that back.
- 1:26:02>> Dude, you know how many people used to
- 1:26:03come to that?
- 1:26:05>> I had my first apartment, bro.
- 1:26:07>> Dude, I remember going out there as a
- 1:26:09kid. Everybody in the high desert and
- 1:26:10more people from out of town,
- 1:26:11>> everywhere go everywhere. Camp.
- 1:26:13>> I can't believe you don't have that. No.
- 1:26:14>> Who's in charge of the events there?
- 1:26:16>> Um, right now it's Daryl Courtney.
- 1:26:18>> He's a stadium manager.
- 1:26:19>> What's his name?
- 1:26:20>> Yeah, Daryl Courtney.
- 1:26:21>> Where's he from out there?
- 1:26:22>> Uh, no. From the high desert.
- 1:26:24>> He's do mud runs and stuff like that.
- 1:26:25Like, you know, work with the county, do
- 1:26:26different type of stuff, you know. He
- 1:26:27had he's he's brought some amazing
- 1:26:29events there.
- 1:26:30>> You need to do the Grand Prix, dude. I'm
- 1:26:31telling you.
- 1:26:32>> Oh, yeah. Granding. Why did it stop?
- 1:26:35>> I mean, I'm sure all the [ __ ]
- 1:26:36>> Yeah. Negative. But dude, that town, I'm
- 1:26:39telling you, Joe,
- 1:26:39>> it was wild,
- 1:26:40>> bro. Like something that like the whole
- 1:26:43It's legendary.
- 1:26:43>> A week prior, like a week prior, people
- 1:26:45would come and bring companies trying to
- 1:26:47get the the the prime spots
- 1:26:48>> and like big time racing pros would come
- 1:26:50like it was like a big loop out in the
- 1:26:52desert. So you could go set up all these
- 1:26:54different places. People be everywhere.
- 1:26:56That's cool.
- 1:26:58>> Now I would go down. You weren't here.
- 1:26:59But I had my first apartment over there
- 1:27:00off of Chaparel. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:27:02That's where it was. Oh, bro. Get 700
- 1:27:05bucks. I'll take it. It was like no 650
- 1:27:07650 two bedrooms. [laughter] I was like
- 1:27:10done. I can afford that [ __ ] I'm out.
- 1:27:12Ma freaking uh uh uh dude all the I
- 1:27:15remember like you said a week of campers
- 1:27:18campers and they're wild. I didn't know.
- 1:27:19I'm like going trouble makers. They're
- 1:27:22just wild. They chaosire monster out
- 1:27:25there. Fox racing like big time. It was
- 1:27:28>> Man, I can't believe you brought that
- 1:27:29up. I forgot about that.
- 1:27:30>> Dude, it was wild, man. I remember at
- 1:27:32the gas station like I got to go to
- 1:27:33[ __ ] work.
- 1:27:36Everybody's Everybody's partying for a
- 1:27:37week.
- 1:27:38>> That's cool cuz now we have more stuff.
- 1:27:39Like we got the new Starbucks.
- 1:27:41>> Mojave's developing. We got some good
- 1:27:44Mojave and
- 1:27:45>> I thought you weren't going there
- 1:27:46anymore.
- 1:27:46>> Huh?
- 1:27:46>> Yeah.
- 1:27:47>> Yeah. Chill. I thought you go there.
- 1:27:49>> Don't we can't pick on him.
- 1:27:51>> I know. I mean, well, I mean, there's
- 1:27:52also one two more blocks down. That's
- 1:27:56not Adalancho, right?
- 1:27:56>> No, that is. So, what's crazy is this,
- 1:27:58right?
- 1:27:58>> Where does it stop?
- 1:27:59>> Uh, Palmdale.
- 1:28:00>> So, Walmart and that is yours or No,
- 1:28:01that's Vic. Oh, you're Stater Brothers.
- 1:28:03Right side. So, yeah, the left side
- 1:28:05north of Palmdale,
- 1:28:07>> left of 395.
- 1:28:09>> Stater Brothers. That parking lot yours.
- 1:28:10>> That's ours.
- 1:28:11>> Okay.
- 1:28:11>> Yep. Um, but
- 1:28:13>> what about the What's Cross Street?
- 1:28:14Burger King. That's not you.
- 1:28:15>> Burger King is Victorville. So, stop
- 1:28:17a.m. PM and Walmart.
- 1:28:19>> That's Victorville.
- 1:28:19>> You're the
- 1:28:20>> Yeah, we're that one little corner.
- 1:28:21>> They got Rubio's
- 1:28:24closed. They're closed, dude. I'm so
- 1:28:26pissed, dude. These are ordering there
- 1:28:28all the time.
- 1:28:29>> I want a pizza shop there. We think a
- 1:28:31pizza parlor would do really really good
- 1:28:33there. Hell yeah. Hell yeah.
- 1:28:35>> Fights, UFC, you know what I mean? Like
- 1:28:37beard, like be a good little kick spot.
- 1:28:38>> They just need somebody to go kick it.
- 1:28:40>> So Palmdale left side. I'm sorry. 395
- 1:28:43left side. Palmdale, right? But as it
- 1:28:44goes up, are is it 395 where
- 1:28:47>> on the left side? So the the truck stop
- 1:28:49on Cactus.
- 1:28:50>> Yeah.
- 1:28:50>> That's where Victorville stops.
- 1:28:52>> Okay. And then
- 1:28:53>> so then that part up,
- 1:28:55>> it's a weird little finger cut off,
- 1:28:56right? And then the air base cuz the
- 1:28:58airbase used to actually be in Alonto,
- 1:29:00right? So it was in Alvalonto got
- 1:29:03annexed away from us by the federal
- 1:29:05government, right? And then when it
- 1:29:06closed with the Clinton administration,
- 1:29:08>> Vville,
- 1:29:09>> right? Victorville Hisperia and Napo
- 1:29:10Valley created a JPA and it was pretty
- 1:29:14much big bank take little bank and they
- 1:29:16punked all the Lonel and took the rights
- 1:29:18of the airport.
- 1:29:20>> Damn, that's big money too in the
- 1:29:21airport.
- 1:29:23>> FedEx FedEx has a hub there.
- 1:29:25>> Yeah.
- 1:29:25>> Really? Yeah.
- 1:29:26is booming.
- 1:29:27>> The commercial logistical airport
- 1:29:30transfer.
- 1:29:31>> Yep.
- 1:29:32>> G is there. They have a hub there like
- 1:29:34>> Goodyear. Uh DHL
- 1:29:37uh Amazon.
- 1:29:38>> So, and the the power plant back there,
- 1:29:40that's Victorville. Is that Federal?
- 1:29:41>> Oh, there.
- 1:29:43>> Well, SCLA.
- 1:29:44>> Yeah.
- 1:29:45>> Yeah.
- 1:29:46>> If you look at infrastructure, right,
- 1:29:47like there's a lot of strong
- 1:29:49infrastructure in there.
- 1:29:50>> Oro the power plant across the way.
- 1:29:54>> That's true. Victorville has been around
- 1:29:55a long time though.
- 1:29:56>> Yeah.
- 1:29:56>> How many years is this more of a
- 1:29:57developed than Atlanta?
- 1:29:58>> I don't know. But they got to 15, right?
- 1:30:00Like it's the people, you know, you
- 1:30:02being half people, that's the that's the
- 1:30:04biggest advantage. That's why for us,
- 1:30:05we're we're we're hurt so much because
- 1:30:08got 50,000 people who just drive through
- 1:30:10the city,
- 1:30:11>> don't stop, right?
- 1:30:12>> They don't stop, right? So,
- 1:30:13>> it's good for the businesses if we can
- 1:30:14have the 395 full and then they have
- 1:30:16places to stop and spend money. It would
- 1:30:18be so much different because
- 1:30:19>> are any of those track homes at Alanto
- 1:30:21that are built like right there off of
- 1:30:22um is that Palmdale I guess. Yeah. Left
- 1:30:25pond. All those that's all
- 1:30:26>> it's all vict
- 1:30:28so so the 800 you guys have planned are
- 1:30:30>> are in Avalon. Where is that going to
- 1:30:32be?
- 1:30:32>> Um south and north right. So because a
- 1:30:35lot of our jobs are coming up like
- 1:30:37quoteunquote on the north side of town.
- 1:30:38That's where a lot of our our new track
- 1:30:40homes are going to be coming for the
- 1:30:41workforce. Right. And the thing is we're
- 1:30:43still able to build homes in like the
- 1:30:46three to like low 400s.
- 1:30:51[ __ ] Yeah, that's good.
- 1:30:52>> So those we again we got some good stuff
- 1:30:54going on, man. But we need power,
- 1:30:56>> right? Like we need energy.
- 1:30:58>> What's your take on people's per uh
- 1:31:00opinion when they talk about Adalanto
- 1:31:02lets like a lot of section 8 houses and
- 1:31:04like you know the ghetto like what's
- 1:31:06your is that true? Is there is there is
- 1:31:08there true rebuttal? My rebuttal is
- 1:31:11Spring Valley Lake used to be a private
- 1:31:14community.
- 1:31:14>> That's a section 8 like [ __ ] in
- 1:31:16there.
- 1:31:16>> Really?
- 1:31:17>> You didn't know that?
- 1:31:18>> Yo.
- 1:31:19>> Yeah.
- 1:31:19>> Section 8 in Spring Valley. Majority of
- 1:31:22those homes [ __ ]
- 1:31:22>> No [ __ ] way. I never knew that.
- 1:31:25>> Take left. [laughter]
- 1:31:27>> Yeah. A lot.
- 1:31:28>> A lot.
- 1:31:28>> Get the [ __ ] out of here. I didn't know
- 1:31:30that.
- 1:31:31>> And then um Ridgerest and inside of
- 1:31:35>> Spring Valley is county.
- 1:31:36>> Yeah.
- 1:31:37>> That's why CHP is in there. Yep.
- 1:31:39>> Rich guys right there. Uh
- 1:31:40>> and then that in the lake and then that
- 1:31:42like is all county.
- 1:31:44>> So county contracts with CHB.
- 1:31:45>> Yeah. San Bernardino County. It's not
- 1:31:47city of Victorville.
- 1:31:49>> Get the [ __ ] out of here.
- 1:31:51>> So we have a couple of like section 8
- 1:31:52apartments, right? We have two of them.
- 1:31:54Um
- 1:31:55>> Yeah. But on a business site, like
- 1:31:56section 8 makes money. It makes sense as
- 1:31:58a as a homeowner.
- 1:31:59>> It's guaranteed rent.
- 1:32:00>> Yeah. You're getting paid,
- 1:32:02>> right? Like I I don't agree with it,
- 1:32:04right? I think it does a lot to the uh
- 1:32:05subconscious mind and the habits of
- 1:32:07people, right? Thinking that that's
- 1:32:09something that you should get paid for,
- 1:32:11right?
- 1:32:12>> Um but
- 1:32:13>> you know, I think it just it it I get it
- 1:32:16for a season, right? Cuz people have ups
- 1:32:17and downs,
- 1:32:18>> right? If you have a career, you have a
- 1:32:20job, boom, out of nowhere, you lose your
- 1:32:23system. I get it, right? Use the system
- 1:32:25get you back on your feet and then keep
- 1:32:26on moving. It's a tool, right? It's a
- 1:32:28tool, right? To help you, you know, on
- 1:32:30life support.
- 1:32:30>> Exactly.
- 1:32:31>> People just don't have that mentality
- 1:32:33though. It sucks, you know. Can I ask
- 1:32:35though? Like, uh, you guys got some
- 1:32:36terrible water out there.
- 1:32:38>> So, here's the thing. It's not the
- 1:32:39water, right? So, talk about along
- 1:32:41issues. It's our infrastructure, right?
- 1:32:43It's our pipes. So, watch. Let me show
- 1:32:45you this. You know,
- 1:32:46>> that's good to talk about cuz like
- 1:32:47everybody thinks
- 1:32:48>> water from the well. So, what we have is
- 1:32:50we have a well to faucet issue
- 1:32:54>> between it's the infrastructure.
- 1:32:56>> It's infrastructure, right? like and and
- 1:32:58I show this to people because it's
- 1:33:00important for them to see. But Alanto
- 1:33:02was built what's this little pen say
- 1:33:05like '7s, right? We incorporated, but it
- 1:33:08was there earlier.
- 1:33:10>> This pipe, we took this portion of pipe
- 1:33:13out and passed it around, right? We took
- 1:33:15that portion of pipe out in 2019.
- 1:33:19>> Yeah.
- 1:33:20>> Look at all that corrosion. Look at all
- 1:33:21that calcium, that that buildup, that
- 1:33:23dirt in that piece of pipe.
- 1:33:25>> Right. So if you're not flushing the
- 1:33:28hydrants, if you're not, the water is
- 1:33:30just sitting there and that's why it
- 1:33:32comes in calcium.
- 1:33:35>> Yeah. Right. So it sits there brown,
- 1:33:37right? Because it's not moving. Right. I
- 1:33:39remember as a kid and that's why when
- 1:33:41people when I first got elected, right,
- 1:33:43people were complaining about the water.
- 1:33:44I'm just like, that water's been brown
- 1:33:46since the '9s. What are you talking
- 1:33:48about? I remember being
- 1:33:50good. I remember as a kid I would turn
- 1:33:53the water on and it would come out brown
- 1:33:54and it' be hot. I would just tap it.
- 1:33:57Okay, it's cool. It wasn't brown no
- 1:33:59more. So then I start drinking the water
- 1:34:00out the faucet,
- 1:34:01>> right? Because again I was just like
- 1:34:04drinking out of the hose. You just let
- 1:34:05it get out the water. I wasn't running
- 1:34:07inside to get water.
- 1:34:08>> Yeah. No, you could you would get in
- 1:34:09trouble sometime for a second cuz it's
- 1:34:12hot.
- 1:34:13>> Yeah. You didn't have you didn't have
- 1:34:14time to stop playing. You were just
- 1:34:15getting in. Everybody hit their water
- 1:34:16break and back to it.
- 1:34:17>> Boom. Back to it. Right. So, so when I
- 1:34:20first became mayor, I was just like,
- 1:34:21"Dude, you're tripping." Like, it's been
- 1:34:23like this for years. Heck no, I'm not
- 1:34:25going to worry about trying to fix this,
- 1:34:27right? Because again, it was something
- 1:34:28that I grew up and I didn't think it was
- 1:34:31an issue, right? Until you get educated,
- 1:34:33tell like, "Oh, that's not normal."
- 1:34:36Okay, bet. So, now let's look at it.
- 1:34:38Right. So, we have a Well,
- 1:34:40>> you said that's not normal, [laughter]
- 1:34:42>> right? So, we have a Well,
- 1:34:44>> it's the infrastructure like you said.
- 1:34:45>> It's the infrastructure, right?
- 1:34:46>> That's expensive, too.
- 1:34:47>> It is. So when we did an estimate in
- 1:34:50like 20 into 2019 in 2019 it was like 60
- 1:34:53mil
- 1:34:55>> right and time
- 1:34:56>> and time
- 1:34:57>> and that and time. So that's for the
- 1:34:58whole city. So now inflation everything
- 1:35:01else it's 100 mil talk about 100 mil
- 1:35:04right question. So when and then also
- 1:35:07just a lot of history, man. Like we um
- 1:35:09we did a bond like in the late 90s,
- 1:35:12right? And the bond the company that was
- 1:35:14insuring the bond filed for bankruptcy,
- 1:35:17right? So then we lost our credit
- 1:35:18rating, right? So here goes the city.
- 1:35:21Now you you you lose your credit rating.
- 1:35:22You can't pull bonds. How are you going
- 1:35:24to get any type of state help?
- 1:35:26>> Right? So it was just a lot of bad
- 1:35:28issues. It was just like, yes, we got
- 1:35:31this. Okay, cool. We let's move on to
- 1:35:32the next. Oh, but we can't do that
- 1:35:34because of this. Damn. Okay, now we got
- 1:35:36to get this fixed. Now we got to get
- 1:35:37this fixed. Now we got to get this
- 1:35:38fixed. Right? So, it's been a lot of
- 1:35:41fixing problems and getting the city to
- 1:35:42a point where we can actually start
- 1:35:44getting some stuff done. Right? So,
- 1:35:46again, looking at opportunities that are
- 1:35:48out there that present themselves,
- 1:35:50right?
- 1:35:52>> I got a hund00 million of infrastructure
- 1:35:55that needs to get fixed.
- 1:35:58>> Where am I going to get that kind of
- 1:35:59money from?
- 1:35:59>> Right.
- 1:36:00>> My residents don't want to hear the
- 1:36:01excuses,
- 1:36:02>> right? Like they didn't they didn't they
- 1:36:04didn't vote for me to be mayor to give
- 1:36:05them well we would bring jobs but
- 1:36:07Edison's not giving us power. Oh we
- 1:36:09would fix your water but no they don't
- 1:36:11want to hear excuses from their from
- 1:36:13their mayor and their leader.
- 1:36:14>> What's the plan with the electric with
- 1:36:17>> So we got a couple of plans.
- 1:36:18Unfortunately, because of the zone tax
- 1:36:20amendment, right, and the nonsense that
- 1:36:22happened, it limited us on some of the
- 1:36:25ideas that we were wanting to pursue,
- 1:36:27right? We were wanting to try to explore
- 1:36:29ways to build natural gas, you know,
- 1:36:32micro grids, right? Build our own power.
- 1:36:35>> Oh, so that's that's the whole thing.
- 1:36:37>> There's a huge pipeline that goes under
- 1:36:39three major gas lines
- 1:36:41>> that go through all the launch.
- 1:36:42Southwest, SoCal, and Kinder Morgan,
- 1:36:45>> right? So there there's things that we
- 1:36:46want to do, right? And if you guys you
- 1:36:49remember when they were talking about
- 1:36:50the zone text amendment, it said power
- 1:36:53and energy plants, semi-chip conductors,
- 1:36:56>> drone manufacturing, there's
- 1:36:57>> four topics, right?
- 1:36:58>> And data centers,
- 1:36:59>> right?
- 1:37:00>> So it was just being able to advance and
- 1:37:03modify zones because of things that we
- 1:37:06wanted to attract.
- 1:37:07>> If only everybody saw data centers, shut
- 1:37:09everything down,
- 1:37:09>> right? Shut everything else down. Focus
- 1:37:11>> semi-chip semi-chip conductors
- 1:37:13>> everything right
- 1:37:15>> everything uses semi- chips
- 1:37:17manufacturing what if we would have
- 1:37:19built a semi- chip manufacturing
- 1:37:22facility in allo
- 1:37:24>> are those mostly in Taiwan yeah right
- 1:37:26>> well there's a lot of stuff here but
- 1:37:27like it's
- 1:37:29the hard the hard I think metals come
- 1:37:32from there things are built here but
- 1:37:33it's like it's it's a billion
- 1:37:35>> but you remember the remember those
- 1:37:37years maybe like five six years ago I
- 1:37:39think maybe maybe that's so far. But
- 1:37:41when they stopped making new cars, if
- 1:37:43there is a chip issue, chip shortage,
- 1:37:46it was co it was chip shortage. It was
- 1:37:47chip shortage.
- 1:37:48>> What kind of chips?
- 1:37:49>> Semiconductor chips,
- 1:37:50>> right? Everything requires it. So
- 1:37:52imagine, right,
- 1:37:54>> we attract a semi-chip manufacturing
- 1:37:57facility. Hey, put upon a sales tax
- 1:38:01sales center here in Avalon.
- 1:38:04Now, if they're selling billions of
- 1:38:06dollars, hundreds of millions of dollars
- 1:38:08of semi-chip
- 1:38:11>> and we get the tax base money,
- 1:38:13>> right? For me, it's business. Like, miss
- 1:38:15me with the emotion. Miss me with the
- 1:38:17nonsense and this that and the third.
- 1:38:19Like, it's my job to better my
- 1:38:21community. If I've done what I've done
- 1:38:22with no money,
- 1:38:25>> that's got to be, you know, super
- 1:38:27frustrating. SK the limit after that cuz
- 1:38:29it's like you feel limited and you're
- 1:38:30like look I'm trying to do good by you
- 1:38:32but you guys aren't [ __ ] getting the
- 1:38:33point you know
- 1:38:34>> you think you think that's attainable
- 1:38:35goal getting those uh semiconductor
- 1:38:37chips. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:38:39>> For sure. It's in the tentacle.
- 1:38:41>> That's like that's like town changing
- 1:38:43right there. You know what I mean?
- 1:38:43That's
- 1:38:44>> But again, right, like if we
- 1:38:46>> And that's what's disappointed with
- 1:38:47Chris, right? Like, bro, you lost
- 1:38:51control of the room. I don't even care
- 1:38:53about data centers. I got, as much as
- 1:38:56I'm educated on it, I got zero. At the
- 1:38:59time, I had zero interest in bringing
- 1:39:02it. It was just like, put it in the
- 1:39:05zone. Let us do our research. Let us
- 1:39:07take our time, right? Let us figure this
- 1:39:09out. I'm looking at the optics. Where
- 1:39:12are all these getting shut down? These
- 1:39:14are a lot of big-time players that are
- 1:39:16probably trying to find a place to call
- 1:39:18home.
- 1:39:19>> H
- 1:39:20>> let's welcome them,
- 1:39:20>> right? Let's let's let's see what's up.
- 1:39:23There was no interest. There's still no
- 1:39:25interest for me, right? Like it's not a
- 1:39:26I want to get it done. What I wanted was
- 1:39:28the energy.
- 1:39:29>> What I wanted was semi. I wanted drone
- 1:39:31more drone manufacturing. I want
- 1:39:32>> Well, like what you said, what's the
- 1:39:34best for the city at the end of the day?
- 1:39:35It's what's best for the city, right?
- 1:39:36And guess what? I can't talk about it. I
- 1:39:38can't hold town halls,
- 1:39:40>> right? Because you, if you weren't
- 1:39:42around, you know, you you know people,
- 1:39:44>> what happened with the cannabis
- 1:39:45industry? I got my opinion. I got my
- 1:39:47opinion why they got arrested.
- 1:39:48>> Yeah.
- 1:39:49>> Cuz they were talking about zoning and
- 1:39:50this that and the third and entertaining
- 1:39:52all the nonsense behind closed doors, da
- 1:39:54da da. And then they did the zone
- 1:39:56changes.
- 1:39:57>> I'm trying to have the feds raid my city
- 1:39:59again.
- 1:40:00>> Yeah.
- 1:40:01>> I want to do stuff. I want to do We're
- 1:40:03doing stuff the right way.
- 1:40:04>> Yeah. I want to do stuff the right way.
- 1:40:07>> Okay. Um, so when you talk about zone
- 1:40:10changes, are you saying that looks fishy
- 1:40:12>> when stuff is when conversations are
- 1:40:15being had and things are being proposed
- 1:40:18right behind closed doors and it's not
- 1:40:21in your bylaws quote unquote your
- 1:40:22zoning. That's fishy.
- 1:40:26>> You're being influenced by
- 1:40:28>> the private sector.
- 1:40:29>> So bring it to the table, discuss it.
- 1:40:31>> Put it in the zone. Now we can talk
- 1:40:32about it, right?
- 1:40:34Hey,
- 1:40:36when perfect example when um shrooms and
- 1:40:39psilocybin got declassified and it was
- 1:40:43allowed federally, right? And Oakland
- 1:40:46started allowing it and you know what I
- 1:40:47mean? Like California embraced, you
- 1:40:49know, all all of that, right? I got
- 1:40:52approached by like 10 different private
- 1:40:54companies. Let us do R&D.
- 1:40:56[clears throat]
- 1:40:56Let us do R&D. Let us not allow. I'm
- 1:41:01[clears throat] not talking to you.
- 1:41:03>> Waste of time. It's a waste of time.
- 1:41:04>> It's a waste of time for me. And then
- 1:41:06what's that gonna put all eyes on me?
- 1:41:08Because we we can't allow it.
- 1:41:10>> Bro, I sleep very good at night.
- 1:41:12>> I'm going continue to sleep very good at
- 1:41:15night.
- 1:41:15>> He he wakes up every once in a while
- 1:41:16with the infrastructure pipe. But
- 1:41:18>> the water, you know, [laughter]
- 1:41:21I go I go iced tea on tap.
- 1:41:24>> Iced tea on tap.
- 1:41:25>> His wife's like, "Why are you talking
- 1:41:26about the water when you're sleeping?"
- 1:41:27>> He's like, "We got We got to fix it.
- 1:41:29It's
- 1:41:29>> brown." [laughter] But you know what I
- 1:41:31mean? Like it's I'm not like I'm not
- 1:41:33dumb, right? Like we've done way too
- 1:41:36much good. We moved the city in a
- 1:41:38positive direction. It just sucks. Oh,
- 1:41:40you're waiting till the election. No,
- 1:41:42I'm not.
- 1:41:43>> I'd rather talk about it now.
- 1:41:44>> Well, it's it's like almost we don't
- 1:41:46know the ins and outs of what you guys
- 1:41:47go through in the fast. And what
- 1:41:49bothered me, right, is and and and
- 1:41:51again, I I haven't dug too much into the
- 1:41:54meeting, but from what I was told by
- 1:41:57several people that were in the room,
- 1:41:59>> majority of those people didn't even
- 1:42:00live in Alonso.
- 1:42:01>> So, they're wasting time,
- 1:42:03>> wasting people's time,
- 1:42:04>> other areas, not just the high desert,
- 1:42:06but they came from other areas. They
- 1:42:07came from LA. They came from
- 1:42:09>> Were they paid actors or
- 1:42:10>> That's what we That that's that that's
- 1:42:12what was floating around.
- 1:42:13>> I don't know who started that Instagram.
- 1:42:16>> Did you see that?
- 1:42:17>> Yeah. I [laughter] was like, "Bro, I
- 1:42:19don't know." We had residents in there.
- 1:42:21I I was told we had like 30 Avalancho
- 1:42:24residents, right? All of them weren't
- 1:42:27against it. They had questions or had
- 1:42:29concerns. I remember hearing a couple of
- 1:42:31residents. One of the ladies said, "Hey,
- 1:42:33I lived in Lousern Valley before they
- 1:42:35did this massive like solar farm, right,
- 1:42:38and we had town halls. I just want to
- 1:42:41know how is this going to impact me? How
- 1:42:42is this? How is that?" There was people
- 1:42:44there that were just genuinely asking
- 1:42:46questions. Mhm. I think you had I think
- 1:42:48you had people there to cause the
- 1:42:49trouble that they did.
- 1:42:50>> Yeah.
- 1:42:52>> It's like the key it's the keyboard
- 1:42:53warrior kids who [ __ ] want to go in
- 1:42:55there and say I'm important. You know,
- 1:42:56it's like shut up, dude.
- 1:42:57>> And then they're the same ones that are
- 1:42:59telling me you need to change the time
- 1:43:00of your meeting because no one can make
- 1:43:02it.
- 1:43:02>> Oh. Oh yeah. You got you got all kind
- 1:43:05people in that room couldn't make it.
- 1:43:06>> Where was that?
- 1:43:07>> Where was that at stadium?
- 1:43:09>> That thing was packed, dude. [laughter]
- 1:43:10It caused like commotion all over the
- 1:43:12socials.
- 1:43:13>> How's your uh how's your campaign going?
- 1:43:15>> It's going good. Um, I'm out there in
- 1:43:16the community, man, talking with people,
- 1:43:18you know? And the funny thing is as I
- 1:43:19was talking to the residents, they're
- 1:43:21not even talking to me about that.
- 1:43:22>> Data centers, [laughter]
- 1:43:25>> like I have to bring it up, you know
- 1:43:27what I mean? And they're just like, "Oh,
- 1:43:28we didn't know." I'm like, "Oh, okay."
- 1:43:30Right. So, again, like I hear the social
- 1:43:33media world and what they're trying to
- 1:43:34say and a narrative that they're trying
- 1:43:36to paint, but like I'm in my community,
- 1:43:38you know what I mean? Like I'm talking
- 1:43:39to my
- 1:43:40>> So, you got two
- 1:43:42>> uh till November. Yep. November 3rd.
- 1:43:44first first Tuesday of November.
- 1:43:45>> First Tuesday of November. Yep. So, just
- 1:43:46talking to the community, doing meet and
- 1:43:47greets, getting out there, you know,
- 1:43:49doing a lot of phone banking, texting,
- 1:43:51calling, talking to people, right?
- 1:43:54Talking to residents. Hey, let me use
- 1:43:55your front yard, you know, and let me,
- 1:43:58you know, call and message your
- 1:43:58neighbors, have them come over and meet
- 1:44:00me. Like, I want to talk to my
- 1:44:01community.
- 1:44:01>> Old school walking boot school, man.
- 1:44:03Like, like get to know me. Put a big
- 1:44:06sign on Sudep's property right there.
- 1:44:07Right there, bro. Right there in front.
- 1:44:09>> We will. [laughter] But I mean it's
- 1:44:11still small enough where you can put
- 1:44:12your boot on the ground and go walk
- 1:44:13around.
- 1:44:14>> Big enough is small enough, right? Where
- 1:44:15where you know
- 1:44:16>> you can show up and people are going to
- 1:44:17show up.
- 1:44:18>> Y
- 1:44:18>> big enough small enough.
- 1:44:19>> What's your thoughts on uh your
- 1:44:20incumbent or your uh your opposition?
- 1:44:26>> That's it. That's all I needed here.
- 1:44:27[laughter]
- 1:44:28>> Look, like there's history there,
- 1:44:30>> okay?
- 1:44:30>> And you can research it. Um,
- 1:44:34>> all the cities have like a little bit of
- 1:44:36like
- 1:44:38rivalry little chaos in all the councils
- 1:44:40like good [ __ ] We like it. Give us
- 1:44:42>> when you go back to 2018,
- 1:44:44>> right? Me and uh Jerry Hernandez, the
- 1:44:46guy who got COVID and was like in the
- 1:44:48medically induced coma um for 100 and
- 1:44:50plus days like it was me and him on our
- 1:44:52slate, right? She was a part of another
- 1:44:54team um and then they kicked her out of
- 1:44:57that team and you know we brought her
- 1:44:59over to ours. We win, right? Right. So,
- 1:45:01she was a part of my team in 2018.
- 1:45:04>> Me, Jerry, and her, right? Um
- 1:45:07some She made some bad decisions.
- 1:45:10>> Is she on the council?
- 1:45:11>> Yeah.
- 1:45:11>> Okay.
- 1:45:12>> So, it's it's Dana, right?
- 1:45:14>> She's a she's a planning
- 1:45:15>> No, no, she's the council member with
- 1:45:16me. Okay.
- 1:45:17>> Um she was the one that proposed the
- 1:45:19moratorum, right?
- 1:45:21>> Right.
- 1:45:21>> Um she's running against me.
- 1:45:24>> Um and we had our issues, had our beef,
- 1:45:27had our differences. Um
- 1:45:29>> she's still on the council. So then she
- 1:45:31ran against me in 22. Okay. She lost,
- 1:45:34right? So she ran against me for mayor
- 1:45:35in 22 and she lost. So then she lost her
- 1:45:38seat.
- 1:45:39>> And then in 2024,
- 1:45:42she ran again, won her seat back, right?
- 1:45:46And now she's on the council. So she's
- 1:45:48running against me on what's called the
- 1:45:50safe seat.
- 1:45:51>> So if she loses, which you know, God
- 1:45:53willing, she will, right? I still got to
- 1:45:56deal with her on
- 1:45:57>> She's still on the six council. She
- 1:45:58doesn't lose her seat. Right. She
- 1:45:59doesn't lose her seat, right? Um
- 1:46:01>> she grew up there from there.
- 1:46:03>> Yeah. She grew up here, I think a couple
- 1:46:05years after me, right? So, we've been
- 1:46:07here for a while. I know her from high
- 1:46:08school, right? We went to Silverado.
- 1:46:10>> Um we just look at politics different,
- 1:46:13right? Um the biggest differences that
- 1:46:15me and her have, and I'm not one to talk
- 1:46:17crap about somebody, right? Like I don't
- 1:46:19knock people down to prop myself up.
- 1:46:20That's just that's outwork me, out talk
- 1:46:22me, out debate me, you know?
- 1:46:25>> Good.
- 1:46:25>> Take it from me, right? Like that's that
- 1:46:27that's my natural nature.
- 1:46:28>> Admirable. Um, but she um, we look at
- 1:46:32politics different, right? I understand
- 1:46:34I'm a policy maker. I understand that we
- 1:46:38create policies and then we enforce
- 1:46:40policies. She's more on the advocate
- 1:46:42side,
- 1:46:43>> right? She's more of an advocate. That's
- 1:46:45her naturalness of it. Almost there.
- 1:46:47>> That's that's it, you know?
- 1:46:49>> Okay. Okay. Just let me know.
- 1:46:51>> Sorry.
- 1:46:51>> That's the difference, right? Like she's
- 1:46:53an advocate, but she has political
- 1:46:55ambitions.
- 1:46:56>> Okay.
- 1:46:56>> Right. But I told her, I said, "Dude, be
- 1:46:58a part of the team. I'mma grow this
- 1:46:59city. I'mma like make this city the
- 1:47:03best. You got political goals. Use my
- 1:47:06success as your success and go do what
- 1:47:09you want to do."
- 1:47:10>> Yeah.
- 1:47:10>> I'm just trying to say like I'm trying
- 1:47:12to be a big fish in a little pond,
- 1:47:14>> right? Like I have a life. I'm raising
- 1:47:16my nephews. Me and my wife like to
- 1:47:18travel. We're involved in ministry. Like
- 1:47:19there's other things. I use my title to
- 1:47:22do good, right? But I'm also a believer.
- 1:47:24The title doesn't make you. Do you make
- 1:47:26the title?
- 1:47:26>> Yeah.
- 1:47:27>> Right. Like I can be a no good mayor
- 1:47:31and be a mayor or I can be an effective
- 1:47:33mayor, but I'm the one that makes it
- 1:47:36effective.
- 1:47:36>> Well, it's good to see like you're also
- 1:47:38a productive person of your city, not
- 1:47:40just the mayor.
- 1:47:41>> Yeah.
- 1:47:41>> Like to judge like not judge, but you
- 1:47:43know, make decisions for the the city,
- 1:47:45but you're also doing things in the
- 1:47:46city.
- 1:47:47>> Yeah.
- 1:47:48>> Trying to solve the [clears throat]
- 1:47:48issues, right? Like we we me and my
- 1:47:50family, we threw events, right? We threw
- 1:47:52some we threw some amazing events. um
- 1:47:55you know, Hawaiian reae based events,
- 1:47:57right? We brought
- 1:47:58>> You did the Polynesian thing at the
- 1:47:59stage.
- 1:47:59>> Major Vibes. Major Vibes was my wife and
- 1:48:01my family, right? We threw that. We We
- 1:48:04brought out Jbug, the Comic Kings, Fiji,
- 1:48:06right? We brought out some top artists.
- 1:48:07Good
- 1:48:08>> [ __ ]
- 1:48:08>> Right. So, just to be able to bring
- 1:48:10stuff to do. Is that my job? No. Right.
- 1:48:13>> It's just community for the community.
- 1:48:15It's community.
- 1:48:16>> But it was it was a dope event, right?
- 1:48:17>> Community. A lot of people went to that.
- 1:48:19>> There's nothing to do up here. That's
- 1:48:20usually the argument, right? There's
- 1:48:21nothing to do.
- 1:48:21>> Dude, it sucks that the Mavics aren't
- 1:48:22there no more. I used to go there as a
- 1:48:24kid. It was such a good time.
- 1:48:25>> Roll down that hill.
- 1:48:26>> Oh yeah. But [laughter]
- 1:48:27>> you could get all your stuff. It was a
- 1:48:29good clean environment, good games. Like
- 1:48:31it was just fun to kick it right there.
- 1:48:32>> Relaxing.
- 1:48:33>> But being able to have a good like event
- 1:48:35center where you're known for that. But
- 1:48:38what people don't understand like it's
- 1:48:40it's expensive, man. To do it right,
- 1:48:42it's expensive.
- 1:48:43>> Everything to do it right is these days.
- 1:48:45>> Like my festival 200,000 to throw.
- 1:48:48>> I didn't have corporate investors. Like
- 1:48:50it was it was a hustle, right? like I
- 1:48:52had to go out and get sponsors, help
- 1:48:55fund raise, right? Like come out of
- 1:48:57pocket.
- 1:48:58>> But when I tell you there are some
- 1:48:59amazing We have people that proposed,
- 1:49:02>> right? Like we had so many dope moments,
- 1:49:05right? But that's what it's about.
- 1:49:08>> Yeah.
- 1:49:09>> What um how much does it cost to rent
- 1:49:10this video? Do you know
- 1:49:13>> when I when I threw my events, it was
- 1:49:15like five grand a day?
- 1:49:16>> Five grand a day.
- 1:49:17>> That's not bad.
- 1:49:18>> We should do a Royals thing there.
- 1:49:20[laughter]
- 1:49:21Maybe we'll get a sponsor. The town will
- 1:49:23sponsor you.
- 1:49:24>> Yeah. [laughter]
- 1:49:26>> I didn't do it, right? Because it was my
- 1:49:28own event. So they look funny, right?
- 1:49:29But like we're open to partnering with
- 1:49:32like we get it, right? I got a council,
- 1:49:34a majority council who either understand
- 1:49:36who either has ran businesses,
- 1:49:38understands business, right? Like I got
- 1:49:41a council that's very proactive.
- 1:49:43>> So let's talk and figure something out.
- 1:49:46Yeah. Usually that's how it works in
- 1:49:47business. All right.
- 1:49:48>> If we can do it, let's do it. If we
- 1:49:49can't, hey, thank you. Yeah,
- 1:49:51>> we're going to start. Want to wind it
- 1:49:52down or what? Are we Are we there?
- 1:49:54>> Anything else anybody wants to ask or
- 1:49:57what would be your message to the
- 1:49:58voters? Voters, anybody you can say? I
- 1:50:01got two questions for you, but that was
- 1:50:02first one.
- 1:50:03>> So, um, politically, right, on the
- 1:50:06campaign aspect, um, it's not time for
- 1:50:08change. You know, we have way too many
- 1:50:10relationships established that are going
- 1:50:12to help us fix our real core issues when
- 1:50:15it comes to power, when it comes to our
- 1:50:17water infrastructure, and when it comes
- 1:50:19to bringing the things that we're
- 1:50:20looking for, right? Um that's that's
- 1:50:22that's the biggest thing, right? That um
- 1:50:25the relationships matter, who we are,
- 1:50:27and the and the the the atmosphere and
- 1:50:29the reputation that we've created and
- 1:50:31that we've eliminated is what has put us
- 1:50:34in this position to make all the a very
- 1:50:36attractive city. Right. So, vote for me
- 1:50:39in November. Um, reach out to me if you
- 1:50:42have any questions. I'm not hard to
- 1:50:43find. I'm on social media. Um, my my

- 1:51:10accessible. I I engage and I try to help
- 1:51:14as much as I can. My last question,
- 1:51:16what's your message to the youth?
- 1:51:19>> Oh man. [laughter]
- 1:51:21My message to the youth,
- 1:51:28be okay with making mistakes.
- 1:51:31Um be okay with taking risks.
- 1:51:35Don't limit yourself on education.
- 1:51:39Don't do things for your friends because
- 1:51:42in 5 10 years they're probably not even
- 1:51:44going to be your friends.
- 1:51:45>> Preach.
- 1:51:46>> Um and strive for shoot for the stars
- 1:51:52because if you fall on the moon, you
- 1:51:54still made it to outer space.
- 1:51:56>> Still amongst the stars. You're
- 1:51:58>> still amongst the stars, right? Um
- 1:52:00everybody has an opinion.
- 1:52:02>> Ignore it, right? Right? They're not in
- 1:52:04your shoes. They don't understand why
- 1:52:05you're doing what you're doing. And
- 1:52:07don't be afraid to ask for help,
- 1:52:10>> right? Don't be afraid.
- 1:52:11>> Appreciate that, man.
- 1:52:12>> And then I have I have one question that
- 1:52:15was specifically
- 1:52:16I wanted me to ask you.
- 1:52:18>> Okay.
- 1:52:18>> It's from a 10-year-old girl named
- 1:52:20Helena.
- 1:52:21>> Okay.
- 1:52:22>> And she said, "You're having the mayor
- 1:52:23on?"
- 1:52:24>> I said, "I am." She's like, "Can you ask
- 1:52:26him the serious question?" I said,
- 1:52:27"Sure, baby. Talk to me.
- 1:52:29>> What is your favorite animal?"
- 1:52:31>> My favorite animal [laughter] Is that
- 1:52:33baby girl?
- 1:52:34>> Yeah, baby girl.
- 1:52:35>> Uh my favorite animal is an elephant.
- 1:52:37>> Elephant, mama.
- 1:52:38>> It's an elephant. Um because they're
- 1:52:42full of wisdom, right? And um they're
- 1:52:45ferocious when they need to be.
- 1:52:48>> I like it.
- 1:52:49>> Ladies and gentlemen, this is the World
- 1:52:51Talk Podcast. Smoke, lift, and live.
- 1:52:53Lers. Good night.
