- 0:13Try to pause all your busyness this
- 0:15very second. Take one deep breath, then
- 0:19exhale slowly and listen to the soft
- 0:21sighing sound coming from your throat.
- 0:26Have you ever thought about it? Why is
- 0:29human life, which appears so mighty in
- 0:31this world, actually just hung on a
- 0:33thin strand of air that enters and
- 0:35exits without ceasing? Centuries ago, a
- 0:40great Sufi scholar named Sheikh Abdul
- 0:43Karim Al-Jili revealed a great secret
- 0:45that made truth-seekers tremble: that
- 0:47within your soundless and letterless
- 0:50breath, the first name of God truly
- 0:52resides. A secret dhikr that sounds
- 0:57like "hu," constantly spinning to
- 0:59animate the sacred point between your
- 1:01navel and your heart. Connecting your
- 1:04spirit directly to the presence of the
- 1:06Creator. Do not move, and ensure you
- 1:08watch this video in its entirety until
- 1:10the very last second. Because
- 1:13understanding this secret of the breath
- 1:15only halfway will only leave you with
- 1:17questions. But if you absorb it
- 1:20completely, the way you view life,
- 1:22trials, and every single breath you
- 1:24take will never be the same again. But
- 1:29before we unveil this secret, from the
- 1:31depths of my heart, I pray for whoever
- 1:33you are who is destined to find this
- 1:35video today. May every breath you
- 1:40inhale today become a means. For the
- 1:43opening of the doors to lawful and
- 1:44abundant sustenance. For the clearing
- 1:48of all debts that have been weighing on
- 1:50your chest, the lifting of all
- 1:52illnesses from your body, and the
- 1:54replacement of all tears of hardship
- 1:56with peace and happiness by Allah
- 1:58Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. For those of you
- 2:02who say amen to this prayer, please
- 2:04press the like button, write the word "
- 2:06amen" along with your greatest desire
- 2:08in the comments column so that it may
- 2:10be joined by thousands of our other
- 2:12brothers and sisters. And don't forget
- 2:15to press the subscribe button on the
- 2:17Pedia Sejarah channel so you don't miss
- 2:19the next legacy of wisdom. Now, find
- 2:23the most comfortable sitting position.
- 2:26Release the burden of your thoughts for
- 2:28a moment. Calm your heart. Cleanse your
- 2:32soul, and listen until the end. And let
- 2:36us begin the story. My brother/sister,
- 2:40wherever you are right now, try to
- 2:42pause for a moment from all the noise
- 2:44surrounding your mind. Set aside the
- 2:48burden of unfinished work for now.
- 2:50Forget for a moment the pile of
- 2:52responsibilities pressing on your
- 2:54shoulders. And allow yourself to be
- 2:56fully present in this second. Sit
- 2:59calmly. Close your eyes slowly if
- 3:03possible. Then take one deep breath
- 3:06through your nose. Feel how the cool
- 3:12air flows in through your nasal cavity,
- 3:14touches the base of your throat, then
- 3:16descends to fill your chest, which may
- 3:18have felt so tight from the various
- 3:20problems of life. Now, hold that air
- 3:25for a second or two inside your chest.
- 3:29Then exhale it slowly while listening
- 3:31to the soft sighing sound that comes
- 3:32out. Listen carefully to the sound of
- 3:36that thin wind whispering softly
- 3:37between your lips and your nose, my
- 3:39brother/sister. There is a warmth that
- 3:42flows out along with that exhale. As if
- 3:45a portion of your inner fatigue
- 3:47dissolves and flies away into the air.
- 3:50So simple, so quiet, and so close.
- 3:55Until we often forget that the greatest
- 3:57miracle in this life is happening right
- 3:59under our own noses. Try to reflect for
- 4:02a moment, my brother. How many decades
- 4:05have we spent living on the face of
- 4:06this earth? Some of us may have passed
- 4:11the age of 30, 40, 50, or even further
- 4:14than that. The hair on our heads slowly
- 4:20turns white, lines on our faces become
- 4:22visible, and thousands of joys and
- 4:24sorrows have alternated through our
- 4:26days. Yet throughout that long journey
- 4:32of life, how many times have we truly
- 4:33greeted and paid attention to the
- 4:35breath that has faithfully accompanied
- 4:37us since the very first second we were
- 4:39born? We are often so busy focusing on
- 4:43things that are far outside of
- 4:45ourselves. Every morning we wake up in
- 4:50a rush, thinking about how to earn a
- 4:52living, keep our family's honor, make
- 4:54our children and spouses happy, even
- 4:56worrying about a future we might not
- 4:58even see tomorrow. Our minds run here
- 5:03and there, chasing a world that never
- 5:05ends. Meanwhile, inside our bodies, our
- 5:09lungs and hearts work in silence
- 5:11without ever demanding praise. That
- 5:14breath continues to go in and out
- 5:16patiently, keeping our bodies warm and
- 5:19our souls sustained within our frames.
- 5:22My brother, has it ever happened in the
- 5:24silence of the night when everyone in
- 5:26the house is asleep and you are alone,
- 5:28staring at the ceiling? A big question
- 5:32suddenly crosses your mind. Why are
- 5:36humans, who seem so mighty, capable of
- 5:38building skyscrapers, and able to
- 5:40master the oceans and lands? In reality
- 5:44, their lives hang only on a thin
- 5:46strand of wind invisible to the eye. We
- 5:49often feel we have everything, feeling
- 5:51strong enough to manage many things.
- 5:55Yet our entire existence in this world
- 5:57is only limited by the very short
- 5:59distance between one inhale and the
- 6:01next exhale. Imagine, my brother, what
- 6:06would happen if the breath that just
- 6:08left your nose this very second
- 6:10suddenly refused to return into your
- 6:12chest. There is not a single greatest
- 6:16doctor in the world. Not a single pile
- 6:20of wealth and not a single high
- 6:22position capable of buying it back. In
- 6:25a matter of seconds, a body that was
- 6:27once moving nimbly will lie stiff.
- 6:30Every grand plan that has been disusun
- 6:32for years will stop instantly. And the
- 6:36person who was once called by their
- 6:38name and titles of honor will soon be
- 6:40called a corpse. Conversely, imagine
- 6:46also what would happen if the air you
- 6:48just inhaled into your chest suddenly
- 6:50became trapped inside and was not
- 6:52allowed to come out; your chest would
- 6:54feel incredibly tight. The vast world
- 7:01would feel narrow, and humans would
- 7:03realize how weak they are before a
- 7:04handful of air. We don't even have
- 7:09absolute power to hold our own breath.
- 7:12For more than a few minutes. At this
- 7:16point of realization, my brother, all
- 7:18human arrogance should crumble to
- 7:20pieces before the greatness of the
- 7:22Owner of Life. There is another secret
- 7:27often overlooked in our daily
- 7:29reflections: the moment we fall asleep
- 7:31at night, when our eyes close and our
- 7:33consciousness completely fades, we no
- 7:35longer know where we are. We can no
- 7:39longer control our own hands, feet, or
- 7:42even our thoughts. Yet strangely, while
- 7:46our reason and will are in a state of
- 7:48suspended animation during sleep, who
- 7:50is it that continues to regulate the
- 7:52rhythm of our breathing? Who ensures we
- 7:57do not forget to breathe in the depth
- 7:58of our dreams, so that we are still
- 8:00permitted to open our eyes when the
- 8:02dawn breaks? This question leads our
- 8:06inner selves to a truth that deeply
- 8:07stirs the soul. That, in reality, it is
- 8:11not we who are breathing by our own
- 8:13power. All this time, we have felt that
- 8:16we are the ones inhaling the air and
- 8:18the ones exhaling it. Yet in essence,
- 8:21we are being breathed by the compassion
- 8:23of the Ever-Living. Every inhalation is
- 8:27an extension of His grace, embracing
- 8:29our spirit so it remains within the
- 8:31body. And every exhalation is proof of
- 8:35His guardianship, which never slumbers
- 8:37nor sleeps for even a second. Sages of
- 8:42the past calculated that in a day and a
- 8:45night, a normal human breathes in and
- 8:47out approximately 24,000 times. Imagine
- 8:51that number, my brothers and sisters.
- 8:5324,000 times. Within 24 hours, an
- 8:56invisible door within us opens and
- 8:59closes incessantly. But of the tens of
- 9:03thousands of breaths passing through
- 9:05our throats and chests every day, how
- 9:07many of them are we actually aware of?
- 9:12What a loss for a traveler on this
- 9:13earth if the millions of breaths
- 9:15entrusted to them from youth to old age
- 9:17simply pass by like meaningless wind.
- 9:22Centuries ago, long before modern
- 9:24humans knew medical tools to check
- 9:26heartbeats and lung capacity, great
- 9:28Sufis had already explored the ocean of
- 9:31this breath's secret. In the corners of
- 9:35Baghdad, Damascus, and the blessed
- 9:37lands of Yemen, cold nights became
- 9:39silent witnesses to seekers of the
- 9:41Divine sitting cross-legged in the
- 9:44stillness. In dimly lit stone rooms,
- 9:47accompanied only by the flicker of oil
- 9:49lamps swaying in the night breeze. They
- 9:53were not seeking worldly power, but
- 9:55investigating the greatest secret
- 9:57hidden behind the movement of their own
- 9:59chests. Among those great Sufi scholars
- 10:03lived figures of profound knowledge
- 10:05like Sheikh Ibn Arabi and Sheikh Abdul
- 10:08Karim Al-Jili, whose thoughts shook the
- 10:10world of Sufism. While most people of
- 10:15their time were busy observing the
- 10:17wonders of the universe outside
- 10:19themselves, like the orbit of the sun,
- 10:21the stars, and the vastness of the
- 10:23oceans. Sheikh Abdul Karim Al-Jili
- 10:27instead invited his students to bow
- 10:29their heads and look within. He
- 10:34unveiled a deep spiritual insight that
- 10:37the human body is not merely a lump of
- 10:39flesh, bone, and blood, but a living
- 10:41book holding all the secrets of the
- 10:43Divine. The trail of this secret
- 10:48knowledge did not stop in the Middle
- 10:50East, my brothers, but flowed across
- 10:52vast oceans with the winds of trade and
- 10:55faith, eventually reaching the
- 10:56archipelago. In Java, Sumatra, and the
- 11:01remote corners of this land, the Wali
- 11:03Songo and the venerable scholars of old
- 11:05inherited an equally profound
- 11:07understanding of the essence of breath.
- 11:13In quiet wooden pavilions and ancient
- 11:15prayer houses surrounded by the night
- 11:17mist, the murshid teachers taught their
- 11:19chosen students that whoever can
- 11:21recognize the secret of the breath's
- 11:23inflow and outflow holds the key to
- 11:25knowing themselves and their Lord. To
- 11:30the saints and Sufis of the past,
- 11:32breath was never merely a biological
- 11:34process of exchanging oxygen and carbon
- 11:36dioxide. As we learned in school,
- 11:40oxygen is just an external vessel for
- 11:42our physical bodies to keep from
- 11:44decaying. But behind that invisible air
- 11:49lies a spiritual life energy that
- 11:51originates directly from the realm of
- 11:53eternity. Breath is a mystical
- 11:58messenger arriving with a life-giving
- 12:00message from the heavens into the
- 12:02depths of the human chest. Then it
- 12:05returns to His presence, carrying the
- 12:07record of what the servant's heart is
- 12:09feeling at that very moment. That is
- 12:14why, my brothers, the wise sages
- 12:16describe breath as a mystical cord
- 12:18stretched taut between the weak servant
- 12:20and the Great Creator. As long as this
- 12:27cord remains connected and vibrates
- 12:29with every inhalation and exhalation,
- 12:31God is speaking very closely to us,
- 12:33even closer than our own jugular vein.
- 12:39It is just that our inner ears are
- 12:41often too noisy with the roar of
- 12:43worldly ambition, anxieties about
- 12:45tomorrow, and the wounds of the past.
- 12:50So we are no longer able to hear the
- 12:52soft whispers flowing in every single
- 12:54breath. Have you ever noticed why, when
- 12:59someone is struck by profound sorrow or
- 13:02carrying life burdens that seem to have
- 13:04no way out? Their chest suddenly feels
- 13:08tight and their breath becomes shallow
- 13:10and short. Conversely, when someone
- 13:15feels genuine peace, their breath flows
- 13:18long, slow, and feels cool down to the
- 13:20core of their heart. This happens
- 13:26because breath has a direct link to the
- 13:28center of inner consciousness within
- 13:29our bodies. A secret point that serves
- 13:34as the dwelling place for true
- 13:36tranquility, which cannot be bought
- 13:38with any worldly wealth. Unfortunately,
- 13:41most people seek the cure for their
- 13:43inner restlessness in all the wrong
- 13:45places. They go far away seeking
- 13:48entertainment. Whereas the remedy has
- 13:51been placed by God within every single
- 13:53one of their own inhalations. When
- 13:57someone does not know the science of
- 13:59their own breath, they are like someone
- 14:01starving in a barn full of grain or
- 14:03someone thirsty in the midst of a clear
- 14:05mountain spring. They keep complaining
- 14:09about their life, feeling it is empty
- 14:11and dry. Yet within their own chest
- 14:14flows a river of light that never stops
- 14:16radiating Divine love every single
- 14:18second. Great Sufis with purified
- 14:22hearts can see that in every inhalation
- 14:24and exhalation of human breath, there
- 14:26is a flash of subtle light moving down
- 14:28from the bridge of the nose into the
- 14:30depths of the body. That flow does not
- 14:34simply stop at the lungs but penetrates
- 14:36spiritual dimensions, touching secret
- 14:38nodes within the physical form that are
- 14:40rarely noticed by ordinary people. It
- 14:45is there, in the silent space behind
- 14:47our ribs, that a sacred meeting occurs
- 14:49thousands of times a day without us
- 14:52ever realizing its presence.
- 14:55Furthermore, my brother, Sheikh Abdul
- 14:57Karim Al-Jili and the masters of gnosis
- 15:00reveal that the sound of breath flowing
- 15:02in and out of our throats is not a
- 15:04meaningless coincidence. If we listen
- 15:09with clear inner hearing, the sound of
- 15:11air gently brushing against the
- 15:12respiratory tract is actually chanting
- 15:15a secret code from the divine realm. A
- 15:20holy call that requires no movement of
- 15:22the tongue, no closing of the lips, and
- 15:25is not composed of letters written on
- 15:27paper, yet it continues to echo,
- 15:29calling out the greatest name that
- 15:31existed even before this universe was
- 15:33created. My brother, since we sat in
- 15:37religious study circles during our
- 15:39childhood, our ears have certainly been
- 15:41very familiar with the chanting of the
- 15:4399 Beautiful Names of God. We memorize
- 15:49them with deep awe, starting from
- 15:51Ar-Rahman the Most Gracious, Ar-Rahim
- 15:54the Most Merciful, Al-Malik the
- 15:56Sovereign, to As-Sabur the Most Patient
- 15:58. Those beautiful names are grandly
- 16:05engraved in gold ink on mosque walls,
- 16:07written neatly in the pages of holy
- 16:09books, and fluently spoken by millions
- 16:12of human tongues across the earth after
- 16:14every prayer. Yet, my brother, behind
- 16:20those 99 grand and manifest names,
- 16:22spiritual travelers of the past held a
- 16:25great question that constantly tickled
- 16:27the depths of their souls. Why does the
- 16:33number taught to ordinary people stop
- 16:36at 99, an odd number that is just one
- 16:38step away from reaching 100? Where is
- 16:43that one completing name located? A
- 16:47name that the Sufis refer to as Ismul
- 16:50Azham, or God’s most magnificent and
- 16:52most hidden name in the entire universe
- 16:54. The story of the search for this
- 16:59100th name has become a very long inner
- 17:01journey in the history of truth-seekers
- 17:04for centuries. It is told in various
- 17:11accounts of wisdom that many
- 17:12worshippers were willing to leave the
- 17:14glitz of the city, walk across
- 17:16skin-scorching deserts, and climb
- 17:18silent mountain peaks to discover the
- 17:20secret of that name. They believed in a
- 17:28heavenly report that whoever prays by
- 17:30invoking that greatest name, their
- 17:32prayer will never be rejected, and
- 17:33every veil blocking their inner sight
- 17:35will be instantly lifted. However, my
- 17:41brother, the further they searched for
- 17:43it in stacks of thick books and the
- 17:45harder they questioned the linguistic
- 17:47experts. The 100th name felt even more
- 17:51obscure and unreachable. No ancient
- 17:56parchment is capable of recording its
- 17:58spelling, and no poet's pen is able to
- 18:00depict the form of its letters. Why is
- 18:05that, my brother? Because those seekers
- 18:09still use their intellect and physical
- 18:11eyes to search for something that
- 18:13exists beyond the boundaries of space.
- 18:18As well as human language. Until
- 18:21finally, in the deep silence of the
- 18:23night, great Sufi scholars like Sheikh
- 18:26Abdul Karim Al-Jili and Sheikh Ibn
- 18:28Arabi opened the door of consciousness
- 18:30for their chosen students. With a voice
- 18:34that is gentle yet capable of shaking
- 18:36the walls of the heart. Those spiritual
- 18:40masters explained that the 99 names we
- 18:42usually recite are names of attributes,
- 18:45which describe God's nature and actions
- 18:47toward His creations. All those names
- 18:53can be written with alphabetic letters,
- 18:55spelled by lips, and heard by our
- 18:57physical ears. But the 1st name holds a
- 19:02very different position, my brother.
- 19:06Because it is not merely a name of an
- 19:08attribute, but a direct signal toward
- 19:10the purity of God's absolute essence.
- 19:15The gnostics refer to this 1st name
- 19:18with a short phrase famous in Sufi
- 19:20literature: la biharfin wa la sawtin,
- 19:22meaning it has no letters and no sound.
- 19:29It is not composed of letters like alif
- 19:31, lam, mim, or others, and does not
- 19:34require the shouting of a voice from
- 19:36human vocal cords to manifest. Let us
- 19:41contemplate for a moment with a clear
- 19:44mind and a calm heart, my brother: why
- 19:46does the greatest name of the Creator
- 19:48of the universe have no letters and no
- 19:50sound? The answer holds a secret of
- 19:55God's justice that is truly moving when
- 19:58we reflect upon it in our maturing
- 20:00years. For everything that still
- 20:05requires a structure of letters and
- 20:07tongue movement is essentially limited,
- 20:09bound by the language of a nation, and
- 20:11dependent on the perfection of human
- 20:13organs. Imagine, my brother, the plight
- 20:19of our brothers and sisters destined to
- 20:22be born mute or unable to speak, whose
- 20:24tongues are tied and cannot clearly
- 20:26articulate a single letter. Imagine
- 20:31also the fate of someone lying weak in
- 20:33a hospital ward, whose body is
- 20:35paralyzed by a severe illness. So much
- 20:39so that they no longer have the
- 20:41strength to even move their lips. If
- 20:45God's greatest name had to be spoken
- 20:47with an eloquent tongue and complex
- 20:49sequences of letters, how many weak
- 20:51humans would lose the chance to call
- 20:53upon their God in the most critical
- 20:55moments of their lives? Thus, with His
- 20:59mercy that encompasses all things,
- 21:01Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala did not place
- 21:04the 1st name on the tip of the human
- 21:06tongue. And He did not hide it in a
- 21:10book that can only be read by the
- 21:12learned. Instead, God placed His
- 21:17greatest name in the most just, the
- 21:19closest, and the most inescapable place
- 21:21for every living creature on this earth
- 21:23. That secret place is none other than
- 21:28the coming and going of the breath that
- 21:30flows softly within your chest at this
- 21:32very moment, my brother. It is truly a
- 21:36reality that sends shivers down our
- 21:38spines when we realize it for the first
- 21:40time. For decades, we may have felt we
- 21:43were not religious enough. We often
- 21:47feel inferior because our recitations
- 21:49are not as many as the scholars. Or we
- 21:53feel distant from God due to the
- 21:55busyness of earning a daily living. Yet
- 22:01, without us realizing it, every second
- 22:03as air enters through our nose and
- 22:05flows out calmly, our entire body and
- 22:07soul are actually chanting the first
- 22:09name of God without ever stopping for a
- 22:12second. People who are eloquent in
- 22:17speech and those born mute. The
- 22:20extremely wealthy and the destitute,
- 22:22those who are fit and healthy, and
- 22:24those in a coma on their deathbed. All
- 22:28of them have an equal share in this
- 22:30name. As long as breath still blows
- 22:35through their windpipe, they are
- 22:37connected to that silent, soundless
- 22:39dhikr. There is no partition between a
- 22:47servant and their Creator regarding
- 22:48breath, except for the negligence of
- 22:50the human mind itself that never wishes
- 22:52to look within. In a very famous Sufi
- 22:59contemplation story, it is told that
- 23:01there was a student who had wandered
- 23:03for decades searching for the holiest
- 23:05place on earth to whisper close to God.
- 23:10When his hair had turned white and his
- 23:12footsteps began to falter with age, he
- 23:14met an old sheikh sitting calmly on the
- 23:16porch of an ancient prayer house. The
- 23:21student asked breathlessly, "Where
- 23:23exactly is the most secret treasury of
- 23:25God's name hidden? Throughout his life,
- 23:29he had not yet succeeded in finding it.
- 23:31" The old sheikh with a serene face did
- 23:34not answer by quoting scriptures, but
- 23:36only smiled gently while placing his
- 23:38palm on the student's chest, which was
- 23:41rising and falling from exhaustion. He
- 23:46said in a very soft voice that what you
- 23:47are searching for to the ends of the
- 23:49earth is actually moving your chest
- 23:51right now to ask me. You are busy
- 23:56looking for water in the middle of a
- 23:58desert mirage, while the true spring of
- 24:00life is flowing abundantly in every
- 24:02breath that leaves your own nose.
- 24:05Hearing that answer, my brother, the
- 24:07student instantly fell to a sitting
- 24:09position and wept bitterly in the
- 24:10silence of the night. He realized how
- 24:14funny the human journey is, often
- 24:16searching for peace and searching for
- 24:18God in places so far away out there.
- 24:23Whereas God has declared that He is
- 24:25closer to man than his own jugular vein
- 24:27. And the most tangible form of that
- 24:31closeness, which transcends the jugular
- 24:33vein, is the breath that merges
- 24:35directly with our life in every
- 24:36inhalation. Try to feel your breath
- 24:40again as you listen to this story. My
- 24:43brother, feel how that air enters
- 24:44without you needing to command it and
- 24:46exits without you needing to arrange
- 24:48its letters. Within the silence of the
- 24:51breath lies the highest purity of
- 24:53oneness. A sacred realm within the
- 24:56human being that cannot be tainted by
- 24:57the falsehoods of speech. For the human
- 25:01mouth may well lie. The human tongue
- 25:03can weave sweet words just to be
- 25:05praised by others. Yet the human breath
- 25:09can never lie before its creator when
- 25:11all strings of letters have dissolved
- 25:14and all the noises of the world have
- 25:16been extinguished; within the heart,
- 25:18what remains in the chest cavity is
- 25:19merely a pure sigh flowing as it is.
- 25:25That sigh becomes a mystical bridge
- 25:27between the transient physical realm
- 25:29and the eternal spiritual realm,
- 25:31carrying every grievance of the heart
- 25:33that can no longer be uttered by words.
- 25:39And if we sharpen our inner hearing
- 25:41even deeper to listen to that innocent
- 25:43sigh of breath, free from the
- 25:44manipulation of the tongue, we will
- 25:46find a natural sound that is the mother
- 25:48of all remembrance in the universe. My
- 25:53brother, after realizing that the
- 25:55greatest name is placed so close within
- 25:57the incoming and outgoing breath, let
- 25:59us dive even deeper. What is truly the
- 26:03whisper that flows along with the air?
- 26:08If we strip away all our ego and let
- 26:10the breath flow as it is without
- 26:11artifice, we will find the most ancient
- 26:14divine code in the universe. That code
- 26:19is a short word that becomes the axis
- 26:21of all the esoteric knowledge of the
- 26:23saints, which is the word Hu or Hua. In
- 26:27the treasury of classical Sufism
- 26:29inherited from Sheikh Ibn Arabi to
- 26:31Sheikh Abdul Karim Al-Jili, and taught
- 26:33through generations by the Wali Songo
- 26:36in the lands of the archipelago. The
- 26:38word Hu is not merely an ordinary
- 26:40pronoun. In Arabic, hua indeed means he
- 26:44. A demonstrative word for a third
- 26:48party unseen by the physical eye. Yet
- 26:51for the masters of truth, Hu is the
- 26:53essence. A sacred sign pointing
- 26:57directly to the purity of God's
- 26:59absolute essence before He introduced
- 27:01Himself by various names and attributes
- 27:03to His creation. Before the heavens and
- 27:06the earth were spread out, before there
- 27:08was heaven or hell, and even before any
- 27:11being knew the names Ar-Rahman or
- 27:12Ar-Rahim, the pure essence of God,
- 27:14unreachable by human intellect, was
- 27:17referred to by the Sufis with the
- 27:18consciousness of Hu. It is absolute
- 27:22purity, free from all depictions of the
- 27:24human mind. A divine ocean without
- 27:27shore or bottom. When a Sufi mentions
- 27:32or realizes the word Hu within their
- 27:34inner self, they are releasing all ties
- 27:36to worldly forms and directing their
- 27:38soul straight to the deepest center of
- 27:40divine mystery. Why is its highest sign
- 27:44the sound Hu, my brother, and not some
- 27:46other sound? Herein lies the miracle of
- 27:50human creation that often makes the
- 27:52wise shed tears of wonder in the
- 27:53stillness of the night. Try it right
- 27:57now where you are sitting. Open your
- 28:01lips slightly. Relax your tongue so it
- 28:03touches neither the roof of your mouth
- 28:05nor your teeth. Then exhale directly
- 28:08from the depths of your chest. Listen
- 28:11carefully with a silent ear and heart.
- 28:14What sound emerges naturally from the
- 28:16base of your throat without any effort
- 28:18on your part? That pure sound flowing
- 28:23from the empty chest cavity is none
- 28:25other than a soft sigh of "Hu,"
- 28:27regardless of your ethnicity or the
- 28:29language you have spoken since
- 28:31childhood. Every human throat under
- 28:36this sky inevitably produces the same
- 28:38fundamental sound when exhaling from
- 28:40the depths of the chest. To pronounce
- 28:44other letters like ba, mim, or kaf, you
- 28:47require the hard work of your lips and
- 28:49tongue. But to release the sound "Hu,"
- 28:54you only need to surrender and let the
- 28:56breath of life flow out as it is. Sufi
- 29:01scholars explain that this happens
- 29:03because the letter 'H', the root of the
- 29:05word "Hu," emerges from the deepest
- 29:08part of the throat, the place closest
- 29:10to the human chest cavity and heart.
- 29:16This is undeniable, tangible proof that
- 29:18since the beginning of our creation,
- 29:20the Creator has tuned the instrument of
- 29:22the human body to constantly vibrate
- 29:24with the signal of His essence. We are
- 29:29essentially spiritual flutes, and every
- 29:31time the wind of life is blown through
- 29:34us, the fundamental note emanating from
- 29:36this bodily flute is the eternal
- 29:38remembrance of "Hu." If we look back
- 29:42and contemplate the history of our
- 29:44initial arrival into this mortal world,
- 29:46we will find the traces of the word "Hu
- 29:49" standing as the first witness to our
- 29:51lives. Remember, my brother, the state
- 29:56of a tiny baby who has just emerged
- 29:58from the dark, warm womb of its mother
- 30:00into the bright, illuminated world. For
- 30:049 months in the womb, the baby's lungs
- 30:06remained folded and silent, without air
- 30:09. Yet, once born and the umbilical cord
- 30:12is cut, it must take its first breath
- 30:14on its own. When the air of the world
- 30:18first breaks through to open the baby's
- 30:20lungs, a jolt of life occurs, followed
- 30:22by the first cry that breaks the
- 30:24silence of the delivery room. Have you
- 30:29ever listened carefully to the sound of
- 30:31that newborn's cry, my brother? A baby
- 30:35who knows not a single letter in this
- 30:37world, whose tongue is still pure from
- 30:40all sin and falsehood, cries with a
- 30:42long, piercing wail that sounds like "
- 30:44hua" or "hoa," a pure echo of the word
- 30:47"Hu." The wise sages in Java and the
- 30:50archipelago often impart the profound
- 30:52teaching that a baby's cry at birth is
- 30:54not a cry without meaning. The spirit
- 30:59of the baby, having just made a long
- 31:01journey from the divine realm to the
- 31:03prison of the body, is testifying and
- 31:05calling upon its Lord with the
- 31:07invocation "Hua." As if saying that He
- 31:11alone is where I come from, and only
- 31:13because of Him do I live. Everyone
- 31:18present around the baby smiles happily,
- 31:20welcoming its birth without realizing
- 31:22that the baby is chanting its first
- 31:24remembrance upon this world. Then time
- 31:28keeps moving on, my brother. The baby
- 31:32grows into a child, reaches adulthood,
- 31:35eventually enters the age of 30, 40, 50
- 31:38, and slowly grows old just like us
- 31:40today. Throughout our journey of life,
- 31:46the Hu breath remains loyal, flowing in
- 31:48and out with every step we take.
- 31:52Whether we are laughing in happiness or
- 31:54weeping alone while bearing the burdens
- 31:56of life. Until a day arrives that has
- 32:00been ordained in the Preserved Tablet.
- 32:04A day when our allotted count of
- 32:06breaths on the surface of this earth
- 32:08leaves only one final intake. Imagine
- 32:12the most sacred yet heart-trembling
- 32:14sight at the end of human life: the
- 32:16final moments approaching death. As a
- 32:22person lies weak on their deathbed,
- 32:24surrounded by weeping children, spouse,
- 32:27and relatives, the strength of their
- 32:29body is slowly being withdrawn. Their
- 32:34feet begin to turn cold and numb. Their
- 32:36hands can no longer be moved. Their
- 32:39vision starts to blur, and their tongue
- 32:41is locked tight. No longer able to
- 32:44utter a single word to say goodbye. In
- 32:48that most critical second, when all
- 32:49human words and language have collapsed
- 32:52helplessly, what is the last thing that
- 32:54leaves a person's throat before the
- 32:56soul truly departs the body? Only one
- 33:02long breath flowing out from the
- 33:04deepest chest, passing through a
- 33:06narrowing throat, producing a final
- 33:08sigh that sounds so faint yet clear.
- 33:16After that final Hu sigh escapes, the
- 33:18chin drops, the chest stops moving
- 33:20forever, and the contract of human life
- 33:23on earth is officially closed. My
- 33:27brother, blessed by Allah, try to
- 33:28absorb this reality with the most
- 33:30honest heart in your chest. We arrive
- 33:34in this world ushered in by the sound
- 33:36of a "Hua" cry. We survive for decades
- 33:39in this world, sustained by millions of
- 33:41inhalations and exhalations of the Hu
- 33:43breath. And eventually, we will all
- 33:46surely depart this world, concluded by
- 33:48one final Hu sigh. The entire stage of
- 33:53our life's drama, all the wealth we
- 33:55struggle to accumulate, and all the
- 33:57ranks we pride ourselves on are
- 33:59actually confined between those two Hu
- 34:01breaths. Yet therein lies the greatest
- 34:05irony that often makes the saints and
- 34:07Sufis weep bitterly when observing the
- 34:09state of humanity. Our lungs and breath
- 34:13chant "Hu" 24,000 times a day and night
- 34:16in complete obedience. Never absent,
- 34:20even while we are fast asleep. Every
- 34:23cell in our body vibrates along with
- 34:25the rhythm of that natural dhikr.
- 34:28Submitting and obeying the law of the
- 34:30Creator who holds our life and death in
- 34:32every passing second. However, while
- 34:36our entire body and breath are busy
- 34:39chanting "Hu," where have our minds and
- 34:41conscious hearts been all this time? My
- 34:45brother, often our breath is calling
- 34:47out the name of God. Yet at the same
- 34:51second, our minds are busy planning
- 34:53deceit. Our hearts are filled with envy
- 34:58for others, or our spirits are drowning
- 35:00in despair. As if we do not have a God
- 35:04who determines our sustenance. A
- 35:07heartbreaking divide occurs within the
- 35:09human being, where their breath
- 35:11constantly faces the heavens while
- 35:13their heart remains prostrate, kissing
- 35:15the dust of the world. The dissonance
- 35:19between the sacred rhythm of the breath
- 35:21and the impure movements of the mind is
- 35:23the true root. Of all the inner
- 35:26restlessness experienced by adults. We
- 35:29feel an exhaustion that never ends. We
- 35:32feel hollow even when surrounded by our
- 35:35family. And our chests often feel
- 35:38crushed by the fears we create
- 35:40ourselves. This happens because our
- 35:44consciousness has disconnected from the
- 35:46rhythm of our own breath's remembrance.
- 35:49Like a dry leaf that has detached from
- 35:51its tree branch. Tossed about by the
- 35:54wind here and there with nothing to
- 35:56hold onto. The masters of old
- 35:59understood this human spiritual ailment
- 36:01well, so they didn't just stop at
- 36:03explaining the sound of "Hu" in the
- 36:05throat. They guided their students to
- 36:09follow where the flow of air and life
- 36:11energy went after passing the base of
- 36:13the throat into the dark depths of the
- 36:15body. Because behind our chest and
- 36:20abdominal walls, the flow of the "Hu"
- 36:22breath is actually heading toward a
- 36:24sacred junction. Igniting a spiritual
- 36:27lantern at two secret points that serve
- 36:29as the control center of human life. My
- 36:33brother, when a breath carrying that
- 36:35sacred sigh enters past the throat,
- 36:37where does it truly wander within the
- 36:39dark cavities of our body? To modern
- 36:44medical science, that air is simply
- 36:46considered to stop in the lung sacs and
- 36:48be absorbed by blood vessels to
- 36:50circulate throughout the body. But to
- 36:55the inner vision of the great Sufis and
- 36:57saints of the past, the journey of the
- 36:59breath does not stop that simply.
- 37:04Behind this coarse mass of flesh, ribs,
- 37:06and flowing blood lies a sacred map
- 37:09that is spiritual and highly secret.
- 37:14How often adults are so familiar with
- 37:16city street maps, knowing exactly how
- 37:18to get to work, or even understanding
- 37:20the location of distant continents
- 37:22across the sea. Yet ironically, we
- 37:28often become strangers in our own
- 37:30bodies, blind to the paths of light
- 37:32that our breath traverses every second
- 37:35behind our chest walls. In the
- 37:41high-level treasury of Sufism taught by
- 37:43masters from the great orders in the
- 37:45Middle East to the legacy of the Wali
- 37:48Songo in the archipelago, the human
- 37:50body has subtle points called "Lataif."
- 37:57Among all these subtle points, there
- 37:59are two main axes that support the life
- 38:01and death of a servant's consciousness
- 38:03before their God. The two sacred points
- 38:09connected by an unseen path are located
- 38:12exactly at our navel and our spiritual
- 38:14heart, or "Qalb." My brother, let us
- 38:19lower our gaze for a moment and
- 38:20contemplate the first sacred point, the
- 38:23navel located right in the center of
- 38:25our stomachs. In the decades you have
- 38:30lived, have you ever touched your own
- 38:32navel and asked yourself, "Why does
- 38:34this trace of a skin knot remain on our
- 38:36body until old age?" Why didn't the
- 38:43Creator simply erase the navel scar
- 38:45when we grew up, instead leaving it
- 38:47etched as a permanent mark in the
- 38:49center of the human body? The answer
- 38:54holds a secret history of our creation
- 38:56that deeply stirs the soul. My brother,
- 39:00remember the time when we were all
- 39:02curled up weakly for nine months in the
- 39:04darkness of our mother's womb. In the
- 39:09narrow, amniotic-fluid-filled realm of
- 39:12the womb, our noses could not breathe
- 39:14air, our mouths were tightly shut, and
- 39:16our lungs were not working at all. Then
- 39:22, from where did the breath and life
- 39:24flow in to keep our tiny bodies growing
- 39:26and surviving? The entire flow of life
- 39:30in the womb entered through a single
- 39:32portal, the navel, which was connected
- 39:34directly to our mother's body. In those
- 39:38days, we never worried about what we
- 39:40would eat the next day. We had no fear
- 39:44of poverty, and we had no power or
- 39:46effort to control our own lives
- 39:48whatsoever. The navel is a monument to
- 39:52a servant's total surrender. A starting
- 39:56point where humans once lived entirely
- 39:58within God's loving care, without the
- 40:00interference of the arrogance of the
- 40:02intellect. When we were born into the
- 40:05world and that physical umbilical cord
- 40:07was cut, most people assumed that the
- 40:09navel's function had simply ended. Yet,
- 40:14in the teachings of reputable Sufi
- 40:16orders like the Shattariyyah and
- 40:18Naqshbandiyyah, and as written in
- 40:20ancient manuscripts left by the saints
- 40:22of Java, such as the Serat Wirid
- 40:24Hidayat Jati, the navel remains a
- 40:26central node of life energy.
- 40:32Spiritually, our inner umbilical cord
- 40:34never breaks; it merely transforms into
- 40:37the flow of breath, connecting our
- 40:39physical body to the Divine. From that
- 40:44navel point, which holds the memory of
- 40:47absolute surrender, a sacred path
- 40:48within our body stretches upward toward
- 40:51the second, most noble point: the
- 40:53region of the chest and the heart. The
- 40:57wise explain that this spiritual heart
- 40:59is located approximately two fingers
- 41:01below the left breast, near the center
- 41:03of the chest, which serves as the
- 41:05gateway to consciousness. If the navel
- 41:10is the root of our physical tree of
- 41:12life, then the heart is the throne
- 41:14where the spirit and Divine light
- 41:16reside within a human being. A wisdom
- 41:21narrative, popular among Sufi scholars,
- 41:23states that the vast heavens and earth
- 41:26are not enough to contain the greatness
- 41:28of God. Yet, that greatness can be
- 41:33contained within the heart of a
- 41:35faithful and gentle servant. This heart
- 41:41is truly the real House of God within
- 41:43the human body, the place upon which
- 41:45the Creator's gaze of love falls every
- 41:47passing second. God does not look at
- 41:54our aging faces or the luxurious
- 41:55clothes that wrap our bodies, but looks
- 41:58straight into that point of the heart.
- 42:04The great problem that often befalls us
- 42:06at the age of 30, 40, or 50 and beyond
- 42:08is the severing of this connection
- 42:10between the navel and the heart, my
- 42:12brother. When someone pushes themselves
- 42:18too hard in pursuit of worldly
- 42:20ambitions, their breath becomes shallow
- 42:22, stopping only at the throat and upper
- 42:24chest. The flow of their breath's
- 42:28consciousness no longer descends to
- 42:30touch the stillness at the navel point.
- 42:32Consequently, their inner self is
- 42:34easily shaken, quick to anger, always
- 42:36feeling insufficient, and prone to
- 42:38excessive anxiety. To reconnect this
- 42:41severed sacred path, past saints and
- 42:44Sufi scholars bequeathed a secret known
- 42:46as the science of anfas. In this
- 42:51science, the life-breath moving within
- 42:54a human is not referred to by a single
- 42:56name, but is divided into four levels
- 42:59of consciousness: nafas, tanafus, ampas
- 43:01, and nufus. These four elements work
- 43:06in succession like four guardian angels
- 43:08, escorting the journey of the light of
- 43:11life from outside the body to the
- 43:12deepest point of the heart. The wise
- 43:16elders of the archipelago explain that
- 43:18nafas is the air we have just inhaled,
- 43:20entering through the nostrils and
- 43:22moving toward the throat. When that
- 43:26airflow descends deeper to touch the
- 43:28base of the stomach at the navel and
- 43:30settles there peacefully for a moment,
- 43:32it is renamed tanafus. Then, as the air
- 43:36reverses direction, moving up from the
- 43:38navel toward the chest cavity while
- 43:40carrying the warmth of life's energy,
- 43:42it is called ampas. And its peak, which
- 43:45unites with the consciousness of the
- 43:47spirit within the heart, is referred to
- 43:49as nufus. Imagine what the inner eye of
- 43:52a Sufi master sees while sitting in
- 43:54solemn silence at night, observing the
- 43:56journey of these four breath elements.
- 44:00My brother, if our physical body were
- 44:03transparent, every time we breathed
- 44:05with full awareness, a stream of cool,
- 44:07bluish-white light would be seen
- 44:09entering through the nasal cavity. The
- 44:14stream of light moves downward gently,
- 44:16passing through the throat and chest,
- 44:18then plunging straight down to touch
- 44:20the sacred point at our navel. As soon
- 44:24as the breath touches the navel point,
- 44:26it is as if an ancient button of
- 44:28consciousness within us is pressed and
- 44:30activated once again. We are reminded
- 44:34that just as we were once brought to
- 44:36life helpless in our mother's womb, at
- 44:38this very moment, we are entirely
- 44:40dependent on the mercy of the Owner of
- 44:42the Breath. From the illuminated navel
- 44:47point, the flow of breath energy is
- 44:48then drawn back up, rushing toward the
- 44:50center of the chest and centering right
- 44:52within the space of the heart. At that
- 44:56meeting point between the center of the
- 44:58chest and the heart, my brother, a
- 45:00profoundly beautiful spiritual event
- 45:02occurs. The cool blue light from the
- 45:06inhaled breath meets the warmth of the
- 45:09spirit's longing, then swirls to form a
- 45:11vortex of golden light that glows
- 45:13brightly behind the sternum. This
- 45:17golden vortex of light becomes a
- 45:19mystical lantern that shatters all
- 45:21inner darkness. Burning away the rust
- 45:24of arrogance, resentment, past sorrows,
- 45:27and the fear of insufficient sustenance
- 45:29. Sheikh Abdul Karim Al-Jili describes
- 45:33that when the connection between the
- 45:35navel and the heart is perfectly
- 45:37bridged through the rhythm of conscious
- 45:39breathing, the human body is no longer
- 45:41as dark as ordinary clay. Every
- 45:44inhalation that descends to the navel
- 45:46and then rises to circulate within the
- 45:48heart with the inner echo of "Hu" will
- 45:50polish the mirror of the heart until it
- 45:52sparkles clear as crystal. When the
- 45:56mirror within the heart is clean and
- 45:58radiates its golden vortex of light,
- 46:00there are no longer thick walls
- 46:02hindering a servant's soul from feeling
- 46:04the presence of their God. Try to feel
- 46:07it this very second, my brother. As you
- 46:10breathe in slowly, direct your inner
- 46:12attention downward to touch the navel.
- 46:16Then feel the warmth rise to fill the
- 46:18space in the center of your chest.
- 46:21There is a calm vibration that
- 46:23immediately spreads throughout every
- 46:25nerve. It is as if your soul, having
- 46:28grown weary from wandering out there
- 46:30for decades, has finally found the way
- 46:32back home. And when the vortex of light
- 46:38at the heart point spins steadily,
- 46:39following the in-and-out flow of breath
- 46:42, a person is stepping into the next
- 46:44secret gate: the peak of unified
- 46:45consciousness, which the saints call
- 46:47the highest oneness. My brother, when
- 46:52the path of light between the navel
- 46:54point and the heart in the chest is
- 46:56brightly connected, a spiritual
- 46:57traveler will arrive at the most
- 46:59magnificent gate of consciousness. At
- 47:03this point, the science of breath is no
- 47:06longer just an exercise in regulating
- 47:08air intake, but transforms into an
- 47:10inner encounter that profoundly stirs
- 47:12the soul. Sufi scholars and the saints
- 47:16of old called this peak of the journey
- 47:18the highest oneness. A station where a
- 47:21servant truly dissolves their sense of
- 47:23self before the majesty of the Creator.
- 47:27For decades we have lived in this world
- 47:30, my brother, often trapped in a great
- 47:32illusion that unknowingly tarnishes the
- 47:34purity of our oneness. Every day we say
- 47:39that it is we who work hard to earn a
- 47:41living, we who move our feet to walk,
- 47:44and we who are inhaling air to survive.
- 47:48There is such a thick sense of
- 47:49ownership within our chests. As if the
- 47:52life and the breath flowing through
- 47:54these nostrils were private property
- 47:56that we could control at will whenever
- 47:58we desire. But when the eye of the
- 48:01heart begins to open through the light
- 48:03of the breath's remembrance, that
- 48:04mistaken view slowly crumbles on its
- 48:06own. A servant whose inner being has
- 48:09been enlightened will realize a truth
- 48:11that makes their tears fall in silence:
- 48:13the consciousness of the oneness of
- 48:15actions and the oneness of essence.
- 48:19They no longer feel that they are
- 48:21breathing by their own will and power,
- 48:23but they realize fully that, second by
- 48:25second, they are being breathed by the
- 48:27love of the Ever-Living God. Let us
- 48:31contemplate this very subtle, yet
- 48:33deeply meaningful distinction, my
- 48:35brother. When you feel that it is you
- 48:39who is breathing, there is still
- 48:41self-pride, still a burden of thought,
- 48:43and still the fear that your strength
- 48:45might run out at any moment. However,
- 48:51when you realize that you are being
- 48:53breathed by Allah, all the tension
- 48:54within your soul will instantly
- 48:56straighten into the sweetest and most
- 48:58soothing surrender. The clearest
- 49:03evidence that we are merely creatures
- 49:05being breathed can be witnessed every
- 49:07night when we lie down to sleep on our
- 49:08beds. Remember, my brother, once our
- 49:13heads touch the pillow and our eyes
- 49:15close to enter the realm of dreams,
- 49:17where do our intelligence, status, and
- 49:19brilliance of mind go at that moment?
- 49:22We become completely helpless, unaware
- 49:25even if our blanket slips off. We do
- 49:28not even know if there is danger
- 49:30lurking near our sleeping bodies. Yet,
- 49:33in our state of forgetting everything,
- 49:35there is one Great Guardian who never
- 49:38slumbers and never tires of tending to
- 49:40our physical forms. With the tenderness
- 49:43of His compassion, He continues to blow
- 49:45and draw back the air of life through
- 49:47our nostrils. Ensuring that our
- 49:49heartbeat and the movement of our chest
- 49:51do not cease in the middle of the night
- 49:53. If not for God who continues to
- 49:56breathe through us while we are fast
- 49:58asleep, surely not one of us would be
- 50:00able to open our eyes again to see the
- 50:02smiles of our families in the morning.
- 50:06Sheikh Abdul Karim Al-Jili and the
- 50:08spiritual masters explain that when
- 50:10this awareness of being breathed by God
- 50:13is carried into our waking hours, an
- 50:15extraordinary unification of
- 50:16consciousness occurs. Every time air is
- 50:20drawn in from the nose toward the navel
- 50:22and rises to the heart with an inner
- 50:24sigh. Hu. The servant feels that divine
- 50:27life is flowing to embrace their spirit
- 50:30. And every time that air is exhaled
- 50:33while uniting the consciousness of
- 50:34Allah within the depths of the heart.
- 50:37The servant surrenders all their life,
- 50:39death, and affairs back to the Owner of
- 50:41the universe. The inhalation is
- 50:44awareness, and the exhalation dissolves
- 50:46into the majesty of Allah. Which
- 50:49resides at the center of the spiritual
- 50:51heart. These two movements of breath,
- 50:54in and out, combine into one complete
- 50:57rhythm of remembrance. Like a bird's
- 51:00two wings flapping in harmony, carrying
- 51:02the soul to fly through the seven
- 51:04layers of consciousness. There is no
- 51:07longer any distance separating the
- 51:09remembrance, the person remembering,
- 51:11and the God remembered within that
- 51:13remembrance. Because everything has
- 51:16merged into a silent inner
- 51:18consciousness in the land of the
- 51:19archipelago, especially in the
- 51:21teachings of gnosis inherited by the
- 51:23Wali Songo and our ancestors. This
- 51:27unification of breath and heart
- 51:29awareness is known as salat daim. The
- 51:33word "daim" means something continuous,
- 51:36eternal, and never interrupted by the
- 51:38passage of time or circumstances. This
- 51:43is not a physical prayer that replaces
- 51:46the obligation of the five daily
- 51:47prayers, my brother, but the prayer of
- 51:49the soul and spirit that continues
- 51:51ceaselessly throughout every inhalation
- 51:54and exhalation. The five daily prayers
- 51:58that we perform with bowing and
- 51:59prostration on the prayer mat have
- 52:01specific time limits. They begin with
- 52:04the takbiratul ihram and end with the
- 52:06utterance of the salam. But for someone
- 52:10who has discovered the secret of
- 52:11knowledge within their breath, the
- 52:13salam at the end of prayer is not a
- 52:15sign of the end of their connection
- 52:16with God. Even as his body rises,
- 52:20folding the prayer mat and stepping out
- 52:22of the mosque to return to his daily
- 52:25toil, his soul and breath remain
- 52:26lingering upon that endless expanse of
- 52:29prostration. Imagine how beautiful the
- 52:32inner state of a human being is who has
- 52:34attained this consciousness of Salat
- 52:36Daim in their adulthood. My brother, in
- 52:41the eyes of the crowd, he may seem like
- 52:44an ordinary person trading in the
- 52:45market, driving a vehicle on the
- 52:47highway, or sitting at work behind his
- 52:49office desk. His hands and feet move
- 52:54busily to complete worldly affairs. His
- 52:57mouth speaks kindly while serving
- 52:59others. Yet behind his breastbone, a
- 53:02vortex of light at the point of the
- 53:04heart continues to spin in rhythm with
- 53:06his breath, reciting, "Hu Allah." He is
- 53:09a human figure whose body walks,
- 53:11treading upon the hard earth. But his
- 53:14spirit's consciousness continues to
- 53:16prostrate before the glorious throne of
- 53:18the heavens. The noise of the world can
- 53:22no longer steal the tranquility of his
- 53:24heart, and the busyness of seeking
- 53:26sustenance cannot make him neglect the
- 53:28remembrance of his Lord for even a
- 53:29second. For how could he forget God,
- 53:35when every breath touching his nostrils
- 53:37and chest is felt as a direct greeting
- 53:39from his true Beloved? In the inner
- 53:45vision of the Sufis, when one sits in
- 53:47silence, aligning their breath and
- 53:49heart in this dhikr, the boundaries of
- 53:52their selfhood slowly fade away. Like a
- 53:57lump of salt dropped into the middle of
- 53:59a vast ocean, its narrow saltiness
- 54:01dissolves, becoming one with the
- 54:03endless expanse of the sea. Within the
- 54:07silence of his inner space, it is as if
- 54:10his physical body becomes transparent,
- 54:12merging with the scattering particles
- 54:14of divine golden light that fill all
- 54:16space and time. This state of the
- 54:20dissolution of the ego and selfhood
- 54:22into divine consciousness is what the
- 54:24masters of Sufism call the station of
- 54:26fana. At this point, all the painful
- 54:30burdens of the past, all the wounds of
- 54:32human betrayal, and all the fear of
- 54:34poverty instantly lose their power. For
- 54:40in his inner vision, there is no longer
- 54:42any created power capable of causing
- 54:44harm or benefit, other than the will of
- 54:46Him who moves every single breath in
- 54:48the universe. My brother, many of us
- 54:52spend decades seeking inner peace by
- 54:54trying to control everything outside of
- 54:56ourselves. We want everyone to act
- 55:00kindly toward us. We want all our
- 55:02business plans to run smoothly without
- 55:04obstacles. And we want this life to
- 55:07always follow the whims of our minds.
- 55:10Yet, the harder we grasp the world with
- 55:12our ego, the more suffocated our chests
- 55:15become. Because we are carrying burdens
- 55:18that should be God's business. The
- 55:21secret of this breath-based tawhid
- 55:23teaches us the most noble path of
- 55:25release: returning the steering wheel
- 55:27of our lives to the Owner of the breath
- 55:29. When you inhale and realize that even
- 55:33a breath that small is His gift, your
- 55:35heart will become very soft and easily
- 55:37accept all decrees of destiny. You will
- 55:42no longer feel alone in facing the
- 55:45harsh waves of life at the age of 30,
- 55:4740, or 50. Because you know exactly
- 55:51that the Almighty resides so closely
- 55:53within every beat of your breath. This
- 55:56highest consciousness of tawhid within
- 55:59the breath is not a heavenly fairy tale
- 56:01belonging only to saints of the past,
- 56:03but a spiritual heritage whose doors
- 56:05remain wide open for us today. It does
- 56:09not demand that you seclude yourself in
- 56:11a dark cave or abandon your
- 56:13responsibilities toward your children
- 56:15and beloved family. It only asks you to
- 56:19bring home the heart's consciousness
- 56:21that has been lost out there, then
- 56:23gently tether it back to the inflow and
- 56:25outflow of your breath to face all
- 56:27life's trials with a calm soul. My
- 56:32brother, after we have delved into the
- 56:34magnificent secret of the union of
- 56:36breath and heart consciousness of the
- 56:38past saints, now is the time to bring
- 56:40this heavenly knowledge down to touch
- 56:42the earth where we stand. For the
- 56:47essence of true Sufi knowledge is not
- 56:49to make us float away, leaving behind
- 56:51the reality of life, but to give us a
- 56:53firm inner anchor when facing the waves
- 56:56of the world. Especially at our age,
- 57:02which has now passed 30, 40, 50 years,
- 57:05or even more. The storms of life often
- 57:10arrive without ever giving any warning
- 57:12beforehand. Let us be honest with
- 57:16ourselves, my brother, that the older a
- 57:19person gets, the more silent the inner
- 57:21battle they must face alone becomes. In
- 57:26front of our children and spouses at
- 57:28home, or before colleagues at work, we
- 57:30may still be able to wear the strongest
- 57:32smile as if everything is fine. But who
- 57:37knows that behind our chest bones lies
- 57:39the burden of unpaid debts? There is
- 57:43anxiety about the cost of living for
- 57:44tomorrow? Or the pain of being betrayed
- 57:47by the person we trusted most. In
- 57:51critical moments when life's problems
- 57:53come crashing down from all directions,
- 57:56observe what changes first within our
- 57:58bodies, my brother. Without us
- 58:02realizing it, our bodies become tense.
- 58:06Our heartbeats race faster and our
- 58:08breath becomes short, rough, and
- 58:10hurried. Our minds run wild, imagining
- 58:14thousands of bad possibilities that may
- 58:16not even happen. Meanwhile, the path of
- 58:19light between our navel and our heart
- 58:22is instantly covered by a thick fog of
- 58:24panic. The spiritual guides and great
- 58:27Sufi scholars like Sheikh Abdul Karim
- 58:30Al-Jili have bequeathed a very valuable
- 58:32spiritual teaching to face situations
- 58:34like this. They teach that when the
- 58:39world out there feels so narrow and
- 58:41constricts your chest, never ever join
- 58:43in the race to chase the noise of your
- 58:45mind. Stop for a moment. Take a step
- 58:50back from the hustle and bustle of that
- 58:52panic. Then return and enter into the
- 58:55sacred space that exists behind your
- 58:57own exhaled breath. How do we practice
- 59:02this way home in the midst of daily
- 59:04life's storms, my brother, when your
- 59:06chest begins to feel tight from
- 59:07problems that seem to have no way out,
- 59:09find a quiet place to sit and release
- 59:11for a moment the desire to fight the
- 59:13situation. Shift your inner focus, once
- 59:21crowded with burdens in your head,
- 59:23slowly down toward the space between
- 59:25your chest and your navel. Take a soft,
- 59:31slow, and deep breath through your nose
- 59:33, fully aware that the cool air
- 59:35entering is God's loving hand extended
- 59:37to you. Feel that flow of air descend
- 59:42and touch your navel point. Revive the
- 59:46memory of total surrender, just as you
- 59:48were once nurtured with love in your
- 59:50mother's womb. Then, let the warmth of
- 59:54that awareness rise and gather at the
- 59:56heart, reigniting the vortex of calm
- 59:58light in the center of your wounded
- 1:00:00chest. After that, my brother, part
- 1:00:04your lips slightly and exhale slowly
- 1:00:06from the base of your chest, with an
- 1:00:08inner echo whispering softly, "Hu." As
- 1:00:15the warm air flows out through your
- 1:00:17throat, imagine all the burdens of your
- 1:00:19thoughts, fear, anger, and despair
- 1:00:22fading away, carried off with that
- 1:00:24breath. Return all the matters that
- 1:00:29your weak shoulders can no longer bear
- 1:00:31to Him who holds the heavens and the
- 1:00:33earth. If the trial crushing your life
- 1:00:39today is a lack of provision, crushing
- 1:00:42debt, or a failing business, then hold
- 1:00:44onto your breath as a witness to your
- 1:00:46faith. Each time air enters your chest,
- 1:00:54whisper to your restless heart that the
- 1:00:56God who never forgets to send thousands
- 1:00:58of free breaths every day could never
- 1:01:00forget to provide for your life. As
- 1:01:07long as breath is allowed to flow
- 1:01:08through your throat, it means your
- 1:01:10portion of provision on this earth is
- 1:01:12not yet spent and His help is drawing
- 1:01:14near. The same applies if the trial
- 1:01:18crushing your soul today is the pain of
- 1:01:20betrayal, human slander, or the
- 1:01:22loneliness of being abandoned by those
- 1:01:24closest to you. When your ears are
- 1:01:29weary of hearing harsh human words that
- 1:01:31hurt, enter the silence of the First
- 1:01:33Name of God, which has no letters and
- 1:01:35no sound within your breath. In the
- 1:01:40embrace of that rhythmic remembrance,
- 1:01:42you will realize that even if everyone
- 1:01:44on earth turns away from you, the Owner
- 1:01:46of your breath remains faithful in your
- 1:01:48heart, closer than your own jugular
- 1:01:50vein. Told in a story of wisdom from
- 1:01:55the Archipelago, a middle-aged man with
- 1:01:57a disheveled face once came to visit an
- 1:01:59elderly sheikh in an old prayer house.
- 1:02:03The man wept, complaining that all his
- 1:02:06possessions had burned down, his
- 1:02:07business had gone bankrupt, and his
- 1:02:09family had begun to distance themselves
- 1:02:12until he felt he could no longer go on
- 1:02:14living. The elderly sheikh, with a very
- 1:02:17serene face, only asked the man to sit
- 1:02:20cross-legged, close his eyes, and
- 1:02:22listen to the sound of his incoming and
- 1:02:24outgoing breath for a few moments.
- 1:02:27After the man's breath began to slow
- 1:02:29and his weeping subsided, the Sufi
- 1:02:31master spoke in a voice that pierced
- 1:02:33straight to his core. He advised the
- 1:02:38student to observe how the wind of his
- 1:02:40breath entered his chest empty, without
- 1:02:42carrying any burdens. And exited again
- 1:02:46empty, without leaving behind any
- 1:02:48attachments. That is how the heart of a
- 1:02:51servant who knows their Lord through
- 1:02:52the science of breath should be. They
- 1:02:56accept destiny with an open heart when
- 1:02:58it arrives and release it sincerely
- 1:03:00when reclaimed by its Owner. My brother
- 1:03:04, when we begin to accustom ourselves
- 1:03:06to aligning the heart's consciousness
- 1:03:08with the rhythm of our breath, as the
- 1:03:10teacher advised, extraordinary inner
- 1:03:12miracles will start to unfold. Problems
- 1:03:17outside ourselves may not vanish in the
- 1:03:19blink of an eye, but the storm within
- 1:03:22our chests will subside first,
- 1:03:23transforming into a tranquil lake. From
- 1:03:27within a heart calmed and illuminated
- 1:03:29by the dhikr of Hu Allah. That is when
- 1:03:32our minds will clear, enabling us to
- 1:03:34see solutions and doors of provision
- 1:03:36that were previously obscured by the
- 1:03:38fog of our own panic. Spare a few
- 1:03:43minutes of your time every day, my
- 1:03:44brother. Especially in the silence of
- 1:03:48the last third of the night or after
- 1:03:50you have performed your prayers, to sit
- 1:03:52in solitude with your breath. While
- 1:03:55others are busy complaining about the
- 1:03:57harshness of the world, sit with your
- 1:03:59back straight yet relaxed. Then, feel
- 1:04:02once more the invisible connection
- 1:04:04between your navel, your heart, and the
- 1:04:06flow of your breath. Make that silent
- 1:04:09moment a place of rest for your soul. A
- 1:04:13space to recharge your spiritual energy
- 1:04:15before you step out again tomorrow
- 1:04:17morning to face the hardships of life.
- 1:04:21Always remember, my brother, that at
- 1:04:23our current age, the number of breaths
- 1:04:25we have used in the past may already be
- 1:04:27far greater than the remaining breaths
- 1:04:29awaiting us in the future. Every single
- 1:04:35breath that leaves our nose this second
- 1:04:37is actually reducing our allotted time
- 1:04:39in this world while bringing our steps
- 1:04:41closer to the gate of eternal return.
- 1:04:47Do not let the remaining, precious
- 1:04:48breaths of this second half of our
- 1:04:50lives be drained merely by lamenting
- 1:04:52this transient world and forgetting the
- 1:04:54Creator. Realize with deep emotion that
- 1:04:58as long as your chest is still rising
- 1:05:00and falling this very second. As long
- 1:05:03as the gentle air is still permitted to
- 1:05:05flow in and out through your nose. That
- 1:05:09is the most tangible sign of love from
- 1:05:11the heavens. It is a sign that Allah
- 1:05:13Subhanahu wa ta'ala is not finished
- 1:05:15loving you. He is still holding wide
- 1:05:19the doors of His forgiveness for your
- 1:05:21past and still giving you time to
- 1:05:23reorganize a heart that had become
- 1:05:24negligent. Every breath you take today
- 1:05:30is a wordless love letter from God,
- 1:05:32whispering gently that you have never
- 1:05:34been left to struggle alone. Now, at
- 1:05:40the end of this long contemplation, my
- 1:05:42brother, let us practice one most
- 1:05:44conscious and sincere breath from the
- 1:05:46depths of our hearts. Sit in peace.
- 1:05:50Release all the burdens weighing upon
- 1:05:52your shoulders. Then, take a breath
- 1:05:55slowly through your nose, feeling its
- 1:05:57coolness flow down to touch your navel
- 1:05:59and warm the heart center in your chest
- 1:06:01. Feel how real the presence of God is,
- 1:06:05breathing life into your body this very
- 1:06:07second. Then exhale slowly with the
- 1:06:09inner whisper of "Hu," filled with
- 1:06:11gratitude, peace, and complete
