- 0:00Acts chapter 5. So, in the previous
- 0:02chapter, [music] we talked about how the
- 0:05believers were not treating what
- 0:07belonged to them as if it was only
- 0:09theirs, but they were sharing it with
- 0:11the community. And we were even talking
- 0:13about [music] how some who had lands
- 0:16were selling those lands and bringing
- 0:18the proceeds and laying it at the
- 0:20apostles' [music] feet so that something
- 0:23bigger could be done, a larger vision
- 0:26could be realized.
- 0:29So, chapter 5 begins
- 0:31in the middle of that story and it says,
- 0:34"But a man named Ananias,
- 0:38with his wife Sapphira, [music]
- 0:40sold a piece of property
- 0:42and kept back some of the price for
- 0:46himself
- 0:47with his wife's full knowledge.
- 0:50And bringing a portion of it, he laid it
- 0:53[music] at the apostles' feet.
- 0:55But Peter said,
- 0:58'Ananias,
- 1:00why has Satan filled your heart to lie
- 1:03to the Holy Spirit
- 1:05and to keep back some of [music] the
- 1:07price of the land?
- 1:09When it remained unsold,
- 1:12did it not remain your own?
- 1:16And after it was sold,
- 1:18was it not under your control?
- 1:21Why is it
- 1:23that you have conceived this deed in
- 1:26your heart?
- 1:27You have not lied
- 1:29to man,
- 1:31but to God.'
- 1:35Now, let's be clear.
- 1:37The sin here
- 1:39is not
- 1:41that he held back some of the proceeds
- 1:45because Peter said,
- 1:48'The land was yours. You could have kept
- 1:50it.
- 1:51And when you sold it, you could have
- 1:53given some of those proceeds and
- 1:56kept others.
- 1:58But the sin
- 1:59is lying.
- 2:01The sin is publicly declaring
- 2:05>> [music]
- 2:05>> a full commitment and devotion
- 2:09while privately agreeing to deceive the
- 2:12church.
- 2:14That's the sin and it's a very serious
- 2:17sin.
- 2:18Right here at the beginning of the
- 2:20church,
- 2:21right on its foundational level, God is
- 2:23wanting to signal not that people should
- 2:26give a certain percentage of their
- 2:28money, but that people should give
- 2:31a full percentage of honesty
- 2:34and not start to deceive one another.
- 2:38Right before this, we're told that they
- 2:40had one heart and one soul.
- 2:44They were of one mind, we're told. But
- 2:46here we have the first division.
- 2:50We have the first little secret
- 2:52deception.
- 2:54We're going to have someone who's
- 2:56pretending to be all in,
- 2:59but secretly he's not.
- 3:01And he's he's sowing the first discord
- 3:05in the church.
- 3:09So, Peter says, "You have not lied to
- 3:12man, but to God."
- 3:14He's saying,
- 3:16"This is not just a group of people
- 3:18here.
- 3:20We're all fallen, imperfect people,
- 3:22that's for sure.
- 3:24But we're part of Jesus now
- 3:27and his church is bigger and more than
- 3:29any one of us individually.
- 3:32And Peter has to honor that and Ananias
- 3:35has to honor that.
- 3:37And he says, "When you lied in this way,
- 3:39you didn't just lie to man, you lied to
- 3:41God."
- 3:43And as he heard these words,
- 3:46Ananias fell down
- 3:49and breathed his last.
- 3:52And great fear came over all who heard
- 3:54of it.
- 3:56The young men got up and covered him
- 4:00and after carrying him out,
- 4:02they buried him.
- 4:05Now, there elapsed an interval of about
- 4:083 hours
- 4:09and his wife came in not knowing what
- 4:12had happened.
- 4:14And Peter responded to her,
- 4:17"Tell me
- 4:18whether you sold the land for such and
- 4:21such a price."
- 4:23And she said, "Yes, that was the price."
- 4:28Then Peter said to her,
- 4:30"Why is it that you have agreed together
- 4:34to put the Spirit of the Lord to the
- 4:37test?
- 4:38Behold, the feet of those who have
- 4:40buried your husband are at the door and
- 4:44they will carry you out as well."
- 4:47And immediately she fell at his feet and
- 4:49breathed her last. And the young men
- 4:53came in and found her dead and they
- 4:56carried her out and buried her beside
- 4:59her husband.
- 5:01And [clears throat] great fear came over
- 5:03the whole church and over all who heard
- 5:06of these things.
- 5:09At the hands of the apostles, many signs
- 5:11and wonders were taking place among the
- 5:13people and they were all with one accord
- 5:16in Solomon's porch.
- 5:20But none of the rest dared to associate
- 5:23with them. However, the people held them
- 5:26in high esteem.
- 5:28And all the more believers in the Lord,
- 5:32multitudes of men and women were
- 5:34constantly added to their number.
- 5:37To such an extent that they even carried
- 5:40the sick out into the streets and laid
- 5:43them on cots and pallets so that when
- 5:46Peter came by, at least his shadow might
- 5:49fall on one of them.
- 5:51Also, the people from the cities in the
- 5:53vicinity of Jerusalem were coming
- 5:55together bringing people who were sick
- 5:58or afflicted with unclean spirits and
- 6:00they were all being healed.
- 6:04So, there's a couple things that are
- 6:06notable here.
- 6:08Number one,
- 6:09Sapphira, the wife of Ananias, dies just
- 6:12like he did because
- 6:15she has a conspiracy to deceive.
- 6:19And God in this horrible, notable
- 6:22miracle
- 6:23is signaling
- 6:25that conspiracies to deceive the church
- 6:29are not okay.
- 6:31They're not acceptable. They're going to
- 6:33destroy the unity. If we have an issue,
- 6:36be open about it. If you want to give
- 6:39differently, do that. It's under your
- 6:41power to give whatever percentage or not
- 6:44to give at all. That's your free choice.
- 6:46Just don't be a liar.
- 6:48Because the money's not going to destroy
- 6:50the church or the lack of money's not
- 6:52going to destroy the church, but
- 6:54dishonesty,
- 6:55that'll destroy the church.
- 6:58And then it says a couple things that
- 7:00might sound confusing in the way the
- 7:02translation renders it.
- 7:05First, it says great fear came over the
- 7:07whole church.
- 7:09And then the very next thing, it says,
- 7:11"At the hands of the apostles, many
- 7:13signs and wonders were taking place
- 7:15among the people
- 7:16and they were all with one accord."
- 7:19So, the fear of God did not stop the
- 7:21miracles, it released the miracles. And
- 7:24it helped everyone come back to what
- 7:26Ananias and Sapphira were starting to
- 7:28destroy, one accord. The people were all
- 7:31in one accord. And then it said,
- 7:34"But none of the rest dared associate
- 7:37with them.
- 7:39However, the people held them in high
- 7:41regard." So, what that means is that the
- 7:43larger crowd of the Jewish community
- 7:47stopped treating them as if they were
- 7:50the same thing. They stopped associating
- 7:53with them. So, that means that they
- 7:55weren't worshipping in the Jewish
- 7:56synagogues. They were worshipping
- 7:58separately. They weren't included in the
- 8:01bigger crowd of the faith community, but
- 8:04they were respected. The people held
- 8:06them in high regard and multitudes of
- 8:09men and women were constantly added to
- 8:12their number. So, it's not that the
- 8:14church stopped growing, it's that when
- 8:17they're excommunicated from the society
- 8:19of the Jewish
- 8:21religious group, they actually start
- 8:23growing a whole lot more.
- 8:25People start leaving the Jewish
- 8:27community and start joining the
- 8:29Christian community.
- 8:33But the high priest rose up along with
- 8:36all his associates, that is, the sect of
- 8:39the Sadducees, and they were filled with
- 8:43jealousy.
- 8:46Now, you know why multitudes are leaving
- 8:48their church and joining the outfit
- 8:52of Peter and John.
- 8:54They laid hands on the apostles and put
- 8:57them in a public jail,
- 9:00some kind of cage or stocks or something
- 9:04where everybody could see them.
- 9:06>> [clears throat]
- 9:06>> But during the night, an angel of the
- 9:08Lord opened the gates of the prison and
- 9:11taking them out, he said, "Go, stand and
- 9:15speak to the people in the temple, the
- 9:17whole message of this life."
- 9:23So, the jealousy throws them in prison
- 9:25and immediately
- 9:28the
- 9:29the prison of jealousy gets opened
- 9:32and
- 9:33the angel tells them, "Go and stand in
- 9:36the open square, right where you were
- 9:38before, and listen to this, tell the
- 9:41people the whole message of this life."
- 9:47It's not a doctrine only.
- 9:50It's not an announcement only. It's a
- 9:53life.
- 9:54It's a way to live. It's a way to love.
- 9:57It's a way to trust.
- 9:59It's a way to work. It's a way to view
- 10:02your possessions. It's a way to treat
- 10:05people. It's a life.
- 10:07Tell the people the whole message of
- 10:10this
- 10:11life.
- 10:12Upon hearing this, they, the formerly
- 10:15imprisoned apostles,
- 10:17entered into the temple about daybreak
- 10:19and began to teach.
- 10:22Now, when the high priest and his
- 10:23associates came,
- 10:25they called the council together, even
- 10:28all the Senate of the sons of Israel,
- 10:31and sent orders to the prison house for
- 10:33them to be brought.
- 10:35But the officers who came
- 10:37did not find them in the prison,
- 10:40and they returned and reported back,
- 10:42saying, "We found the prison house
- 10:45locked quite securely and the guards
- 10:48standing at the doors,
- 10:50but when we had opened up,
- 10:52we found no one inside."
- 10:56Now, when the captain of the temple
- 10:58guard and the chief priest heard these
- 11:00words, they were greatly perplexed about
- 11:02them as to what would have come of this.
- 11:06But someone came and reported to them,
- 11:08"The men whom you put in prison are
- 11:11standing in the temple and teaching the
- 11:13people."
- 11:15Then the captain went along with the
- 11:17officers and proceeded to bring them
- 11:19back without violence,
- 11:22for they were afraid of the people
- 11:25that they might be stoned.
- 11:27Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
- 11:30When they had brought them, they stood
- 11:32them before the council.
- 11:34The high priest questioned them,
- 11:36saying,
- 11:38"We gave you strict orders not to
- 11:42continue teaching in this name.
- 11:45And yet, you have filled Jerusalem with
- 11:49your teaching and intend to bring this
- 11:53man's blood upon us."
- 12:00But Peter, with the apostles, answered,
- 12:04"We must obey God rather than men.
- 12:08The God of our fathers
- 12:11raised up Jesus, whom you had put to
- 12:14death by hanging him on a cross.
- 12:18He is the one whom God exalted to his
- 12:22right hand
- 12:23as a prince and a savior to grant
- 12:27repentance to Israel and forgiveness of
- 12:31sins.
- 12:32And we are witnesses of these things,
- 12:36and so is the Holy Spirit,
- 12:39whom God has given to those who obey
- 12:43him."
- 12:50But when they heard this, they were cut
- 12:53to the quick
- 12:55and intended to kill them.
- 12:59Now, this is exactly the same phrase
- 13:03that
- 13:04is used
- 13:06three chapters earlier
- 13:08when Peter is preaching and some are
- 13:11pierced or cut to the heart. They said,
- 13:15"What should we do?" And Peter said,
- 13:18"Repent, be baptized, be filled."
- 13:21But here, they're cut to the quick and
- 13:23they don't say, "What should we do?"
- 13:26They intend to kill them.
- 13:28So, the same message of conviction can
- 13:30produce in us
- 13:33a cut
- 13:35that causes us to ask, "What should we
- 13:37do?" and come to repentance, or it
- 13:39causes us
- 13:41to be filled with jealousy and hatred
- 13:43and and a desire to kill.
- 13:48They were cut to the quick and intended
- 13:50to kill them.
- 13:52But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,
- 13:56a teacher of the law,
- 13:58respected by all the people, stood up in
- 14:02the council
- 14:03and gave orders to put the men outside
- 14:07for a short time.
- 14:08Gamaliel is one of the most famous
- 14:12teachers
- 14:13of this entire century.
- 14:17He is the master and head
- 14:19of one of the major schools, like the
- 14:22university
- 14:24of that time.
- 14:26And so, when he is going to speak,
- 14:28everybody's going to listen. This is
- 14:31like the head of an entire university.
- 14:34He's about to address the people.
- 14:36And he's a Pharisee.
- 14:38The others are Sadducees. The high
- 14:40priestly house was held by
- 14:42the Sadducees, who did not believe in
- 14:44the resurrection. They are a more
- 14:46liberal, less biblically observant
- 14:50crowd.
- 14:51And so,
- 14:52ironically, they're the ones who are
- 14:56most aggressive, especially here at the
- 14:58beginning,
- 14:59against the apostles.
- 15:02But he is
- 15:03a Pharisee.
- 15:06And what we know is that one of his
- 15:08students
- 15:09is a man named Paul.
- 15:12So, his openness, what he's about to ex-
- 15:14what he's about to express,
- 15:16is going to show that there was at least
- 15:19a sliver of doubt, a possibility in his
- 15:23mind that this could be of God.
- 15:27And one of his students is going to
- 15:28originally start out very much on the
- 15:30wrong side,
- 15:32but that sliver of doubt is going to
- 15:33grow in his mind, too, until
- 15:36his student Paul makes a turn in the
- 15:38future.
- 15:39But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, teacher
- 15:42of the law, respected by all the people,
- 15:45stood up in the council and gave orders.
- 15:49So, he's got some voice in this Senate
- 15:51meeting to put the men, Peter and John,
- 15:54outside for a short time.
- 15:58And he said to them,
- 16:01"Men of Israel,
- 16:02take care what you propose to do with
- 16:05these men.
- 16:08For some time ago, Theudas rose up,
- 16:12claiming to be somebody,
- 16:14and a group of about 400 men joined up
- 16:17with him.
- 16:19But he was killed,
- 16:21and all who followed him
- 16:23were dispersed and came to nothing.
- 16:26After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up
- 16:29in the days of the census and drew away
- 16:32some people after him.
- 16:35He, too, perished, and all those who
- 16:38followed him were scattered.
- 16:42So, in the present case,
- 16:44I say to you,
- 16:46"Stay away from these men
- 16:48and let them alone,
- 16:51for if this plan or action
- 16:54is of men,
- 16:55it will be overthrown.
- 16:58But if it is of God,
- 17:00you will not be able to overthrow them,
- 17:04or else
- 17:05you may even be found fighting against
- 17:08God."
- 17:12Now, listen to what he's saying.
- 17:14He's saying
- 17:15>> [music]
- 17:15>> revolutionaries have come before.
- 17:19And he names off the fact that they have
- 17:22seen something start multiple times, but
- 17:24he says it always ended with the death
- 17:27of the leader.
- 17:29That should be the end of it, but he's
- 17:31saying, "People don't act like this
- 17:35whose leader is dead.
- 17:37There's something going on here.
- 17:40People don't march in here willing to
- 17:42die
- 17:44for someone who's dead.
- 17:46They might know something.
- 17:48Their leader might not be dead is the
- 17:51implication."
- 17:53And then he says this,
- 17:54"If it's of man, it it's
- 17:59it's going to be overthrown. It's going
- 18:00to come to you might find yourself
- 18:03fighting God."
- 18:07They took his advice,
- 18:10and after calling the apostles in,
- 18:12they flogged them
- 18:15and ordered [music] them not to speak in
- 18:17the name of Jesus,
- 18:20and then
- 18:21released them.
- 18:23So, they went on their way from the
- 18:24presence of the council, [music]
- 18:26rejoicing
- 18:28that they had been considered worthy to
- 18:30suffer shame for his name.
- 18:34And every day in the temple and from
- 18:37house to house, they kept right on
- 18:40teaching and preaching Jesus as the
- 18:43Christ.
- 18:47>> [music]
