- 0:00Acts chapter 21 [music] verse 1.
- 0:03When we had departed from them and had
- 0:05set sail,
- 0:07we ran a straight course to Cos
- 0:10and the next day to [music] Rhodes and
- 0:12from there to Patara.
- 0:15And having found a ship crossing over to
- 0:17Phoenicia,
- 0:18we went aboard and set sail.
- 0:21When we came in sight of Cyprus,
- 0:24leaving it on the left, we kept sailing
- 0:26[music] to Syria and landed at Tyre.
- 0:30For there the ship was to unload its
- 0:32cargo.
- 0:33After looking up the disciples, [music]
- 0:35we stayed there 7 days and they kept
- 0:38telling Paul through the spirit not to
- 0:41set foot in Jerusalem.
- 0:44So,
- 0:46this is a little bit confusing.
- 0:49>> [music]
- 0:49>> The believers in every city are warning
- 0:52Paul
- 0:53of what's coming in Jerusalem.
- 0:56And even here through the spirit,
- 0:58they're seeing what's coming.
- 1:01But to see that trouble is coming by the
- 1:04gift of the spirit is not necessarily to
- 1:08know that you shouldn't go into that
- 1:10trouble if the spirit has sent you
- 1:12there.
- 1:13So, these people are using their gift of
- 1:15the spirit to say trouble is coming.
- 1:17Paul is saying, "I know it's coming, but
- 1:20that same Holy Spirit is telling me to
- 1:22go."
- 1:26When our days
- 1:27>> [music]
- 1:27>> were ended, we left and started on our
- 1:30journey while they all with wives and
- 1:33children escorted us until we were out
- 1:36of the city.
- 1:37After kneeling down on the beach and
- 1:40praying,
- 1:40>> [music]
- 1:41>> we said farewell to one another.
- 1:44Then we went on board the ship and they
- 1:46returned home again.
- 1:49When we had finished the voyage from
- 1:50Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais
- 1:53>> [music]
- 1:54>> and after greeting the brethren, we
- 1:56stayed with them for a day.
- 1:58On the next day we left and came to
- 2:01Caesarea.
- 2:03And entering the house of Philip the
- 2:05evangelist, who was one of the seven, we
- 2:08stayed with him.
- 2:10Remember that Philip the evangelist is
- 2:13one of the seven [music] deacons who was
- 2:15first appointed.
- 2:17But he's the one who brought the gospel
- 2:18[music]
- 2:19to Samaria and who won over the first
- 2:22Ethiopian on the road to Gaza.
- 2:25And now he's called Philip the
- 2:27evangelist.
- 2:28It shows that even if God calls you to
- 2:31one place of ministry as [music] a
- 2:32deacon, it can grow into something else.
- 2:38We stayed in the house of Philip the
- 2:39evangelist, who was one of the seven.
- 2:42Now this man had four virgin daughters
- 2:45who were prophetesses.
- 2:48As we were staying there for some days,
- 2:51a prophet named Agabus came down from
- 2:53Judea.
- 2:55Now it's very important that
- 2:58Luke tells us that Philip the evangelist
- 3:00had four daughters who were
- 3:02prophetesses.
- 3:04That means that they were prophesying in
- 3:07the church. That doesn't mean that they
- 3:09were holding an office of ministry, but
- 3:13they had a ministry.
- 3:15And this is important to think about as
- 3:18we try to interpret Paul's instruction
- 3:20that women should not speak in church.
- 3:23We have to bear in mind that these four
- 3:26women clearly were speaking in church.
- 3:28They're prophesying. So, how we balance
- 3:31that will become a topic in future
- 3:35discussions.
- 3:38As we were staying there for some days,
- 3:40a prophet named Agabus came down from
- 3:42Judea. Now Agabus is the one who
- 3:45prophesied of the fire and famine that
- 3:48came already and he He accurate in his
- 3:51prophecy.
- 3:53Notice that it doesn't say that Agabus
- 3:56is a man who did some prophesying. He's
- 3:59a prophet.
- 4:01And coming to us, he took Paul's belt
- 4:04and bound his own feet and hands
- 4:07and said, "This is what the Holy Spirit
- 4:10says,
- 4:12in this way the Jews at Jerusalem will
- 4:15bind the man who owns this belt and
- 4:18deliver him into the hands of the
- 4:20Gentiles."
- 4:23So, God is wanting Paul to know what
- 4:26he's going to face in Jerusalem.
- 4:29But Paul is not shrinking back from
- 4:31going so long as he feels that the Lord
- 4:34is sending him.
- 4:36The warning of what is coming
- 4:39does not decide whether it should happen
- 4:41or not, just that we be prepared for
- 4:43when it happens.
- 4:46When we had heard this,
- 4:48we as well as the local residents began
- 4:51begging him not to go to Jerusalem.
- 4:54So, now Luke uses the word we.
- 4:58It's not just the local people.
- 5:00It's we. All of his companions who trap
- 5:03who are traveling with him, they were
- 5:05saying, "Paul, don't go to Jerusalem."
- 5:09Then Paul answered,
- 5:11"What are you doing?
- 5:13Weeping and breaking my heart.
- 5:16For I am ready
- 5:18not only to be bound,
- 5:21but even to die at Jerusalem for the
- 5:24name of the Lord Jesus."
- 5:26He told the Ephesus elders, "I do not
- 5:28consider my life as of any account to
- 5:31me.
- 5:33My mission is not to protect myself."
- 5:35Now, he's saying, "I am ready to be
- 5:38bound not only, but also to die.
- 5:42Why are you making this harder than it
- 5:44needs to be?"
- 5:46And since he would not be persuaded,
- 5:49we fell silent,
- 5:51remarking,
- 5:52"The will of the Lord be done."
- 5:57After these days, we got ready and
- 6:00started on our way to Jerusalem.
- 6:03Some of the disciples from Caesarea also
- 6:06came with us, taking us to Mnason of
- 6:09Cyprus,
- 6:11a disciple of long standing, with whom
- 6:14we were to lodge.
- 6:16After we arrived in Jerusalem, the
- 6:19brethren received us gladly.
- 6:22And the following day, Paul went in with
- 6:25us to James, and all the elders were
- 6:28present.
- 6:30After he had greeted them, he began to
- 6:33relate one by one the things which God
- 6:36had done among the Gentiles through his
- 6:39ministry.
- 6:41And when they heard it, they began
- 6:43glorifying God.
- 6:45And they said to him,
- 6:47"You see, brother, how many thousands
- 6:49there are among the Jews of those who
- 6:52have believed? And they are all zealous
- 6:54for the law.
- 6:56And they have been told about you that
- 6:58you are teaching all the Jews who are
- 7:01among the Gentiles to forsake Moses,
- 7:03telling them not to circumcise their
- 7:05children nor to walk according to the
- 7:08customs.
- 7:10What then is to be done? They will
- 7:12certainly hear that you have come.
- 7:15Therefore,
- 7:16do this that we tell you.
- 7:18We have four men who are under a vow.
- 7:22Take them and purify yourself along with
- 7:24them, and pay their expenses, so that
- 7:28they may shave their heads, and all will
- 7:30know that there is nothing to the things
- 7:34which they have been told about you,
- 7:36but that you yourself also walk orderly,
- 7:40keeping the law.
- 7:42But concerning the Gentiles who have
- 7:44believed, we wrote, having decided that
- 7:47they should abstain from meat sacrificed
- 7:50to idols, from blood, and from what is
- 7:53strangled, and from fornication.
- 7:55Then Paul took the men and the next day
- 7:59purifying himself along with them, went
- 8:02into the temple giving notice of the
- 8:05completion of the days of purification
- 8:08until the sacrifice was offered for each
- 8:10one of them.
- 8:12So, what's happening here? Paul had a
- 8:15revelation
- 8:17about the role that the law was no
- 8:19longer playing in our salvation.
- 8:23And when he had that revelation, he went
- 8:25privately and spoke with Peter and James
- 8:28about it.
- 8:29But then when they told him it was the
- 8:31truth and that he was not running in
- 8:33vain, he preached that revelation in
- 8:35Antioch. And in Antioch, some of the
- 8:38Jews who were also Christians said, "Oh,
- 8:41no, you can't be saved unless you're
- 8:43circumcised." So, there was a dispute,
- 8:47and that dispute occurred in Acts 15,
- 8:49and it was brought to the senior
- 8:51eldership in
- 8:54Jerusalem.
- 8:55And in that debate, there was a lot of
- 8:58conversation, a lot of disagreement, and
- 9:00the Lord spoke through Peter and James,
- 9:03the two men that Paul had conferred with
- 9:05beforehand. And they explained that this
- 9:08was the will of God that the Gentiles be
- 9:11included in salvation. And they told the
- 9:13Gentiles that they, the Gentiles, didn't
- 9:15have to observe the law.
- 9:18But the Jews kept abiding by the law.
- 9:24But there's a word that Paul does not.
- 9:28And so,
- 9:30the church is in a journey.
- 9:33Just like they first didn't think that
- 9:35it was okay to bring Cornelius into the
- 9:37church, and then they changed and
- 9:39accepted that.
- 9:40And then they thought all the Gentiles
- 9:42needed to be circumcised, and then they
- 9:44changed and accepted that they did not.
- 9:47Well, even now, they're they're still
- 9:50too attached to the law. They're living
- 9:53in a time where the temple is still
- 9:55standing, and the cultural gravity, the
- 10:00the weight of the traditions is so
- 10:02powerful that they're abiding by the law
- 10:05pretty rigidly. So, they're a bunch of
- 10:08Christians
- 10:10who have a background in Judaism, who
- 10:12are Jewish by tradition and by
- 10:14ethnicity. And when Paul comes to
- 10:17Jerusalem, James and the other elders
- 10:18say,
- 10:19"These Christians are going to get very
- 10:21offended at you because they hear that
- 10:24you're saying that even the Jews don't
- 10:25have to abide by the law."
- 10:28And so, they want him to show that he
- 10:30still keeps the customs.
- 10:33Now,
- 10:34Paul does this because he's willing to
- 10:37surrender his freedom
- 10:39to help his brothers.
- 10:41But in his other teachings, he's going
- 10:43to show unequivocally
- 10:46that circumcision is nothing.
- 10:49He's going to show unequivocally
- 10:52that that old law and system is fading
- 10:55away, temporary as it was, that it has
- 10:58no glory, that it is no longer part of
- 11:01God's plan.
- 11:03But what is part of God's plan is to
- 11:06love your brother,
- 11:08to show honor and respect, and to
- 11:10conform as much as depends on you if it
- 11:13doesn't cause you to compromise.
- 11:15So, he shaves his head, he pays the
- 11:18ritual price,
- 11:20he goes through the ceremonial
- 11:22purification, and he he calms the fears
- 11:26of the Jewish Christians who are afraid
- 11:29that he's becoming too free. He's too
- 11:31too liberal. So, he calms their fears
- 11:34and goes through the motions. But, he's
- 11:36going to later give teaching, especially
- 11:38in Hebrews, that is going to completely
- 11:41clarify that this law plays no part in
- 11:46our relationship of salvation with God.
- 11:50When the seven days were almost over,
- 11:53the Jews from Asia, upon seeing him,
- 11:56Paul, in the temple, began to stir up
- 11:59all the crowd and laid hands on him cuz
- 12:02they know what he was teaching in the
- 12:04synagogues.
- 12:06Crying out, "Men of Israel, come to our
- 12:10aid. This is the man who preaches to all
- 12:14men everywhere against our people and
- 12:17the law and this place. And besides, he
- 12:21has even brought Greeks into the temple
- 12:24and has defiled this holy place."
- 12:29For they had previously seen
- 12:32Trophimus, the Ephesian, in the city
- 12:35with him and they supposed that Paul had
- 12:38brought him into the temple.
- 12:40But, Paul didn't.
- 12:42Then, all the city was provoked and the
- 12:45people rushed together and taking hold
- 12:47of Paul, they dragged him out of the
- 12:50temple and immediately the doors were
- 12:52shut.
- 12:54The temple doors have to be shut in
- 12:56order for them to purify the temple if
- 12:58Paul brought a Greek into the temple.
- 13:02While they were seeking to kill him,
- 13:06a report came up to the commander of the
- 13:08Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in
- 13:12confusion.
- 13:14At once, he took along some soldiers and
- 13:17centurions and ran down to them.
- 13:20And when they saw the commander and the
- 13:21soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
- 13:26So, they're going to beat him to death
- 13:28had the police not showed up on the
- 13:30site.
- 13:32Then the commander came up and took hold
- 13:34of him
- 13:35ordering him to be bound with two chains
- 13:38and he began asking who he was and what
- 13:41he had done.
- 13:43But among the crowd, some were shouting
- 13:46one thing and some another.
- 13:48>> [music]
- 13:48>> And when he could not find out the facts
- 13:51because of the uproar, he ordered him to
- 13:54be brought into the barracks.
- 13:57When he got to [music] the stairs, he
- 14:00was carried by the soldiers because of
- 14:02the violence of the mob.
- 14:07They are
- 14:08screaming and lashing and trying to beat
- 14:11[music] him to death.
- 14:13And the soldiers have to pick up
- 14:15small Paul
- 14:17>> [music]
- 14:17>> and carry him along so that he is not
- 14:20torn to pieces by the mob.
- 14:24For the multitude of the people kept
- 14:27following them shouting, "Away with him.
- 14:30Away with him."
- 14:32It's what they said about Jesus.
- 14:35As Paul was about to be brought into the
- 14:37barracks, he said to the commander, "May
- 14:40I say something to you?"
- 14:42And he said,
- 14:43"Do you know Greek?
- 14:45Then you are not the Egyptian who
- 14:47sometime [music] ago stirred up a revolt
- 14:50and led the 4,000 men of the assassins
- 14:53out into the wilderness."
- 14:55But Paul said, [music]
- 14:56"I am a Jew of Tarsus in Cilicia,
- 15:00a citizen of no insignificant city.
- 15:04And I beg you, allow me to speak to the
- 15:07people."
- 15:09Paul
- 15:10is in a mob that is trying to tear him
- 15:12to pieces.
- 15:14He doesn't see this as a calamity. He
- 15:17[music] sees it as an opportunity.
- 15:19When he had given him when the Centurion
- 15:21had given him permission, Paul, standing
- 15:24on the stairs, motioned to the people
- 15:26with [music] his hand.
- 15:28And when there was a great hush,
- 15:32he spoke to them [music] in the Hebrew
- 15:33dialect, saying,
- 15:36And then we have to go to [music]
- 15:37chapter 22.
