- 0:00Acts chapter 20, verse 1.
- 0:03After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent
- 0:05for the disciples, [music] and when he
- 0:07had exhorted them and taken his leave,
- 0:10he left to go to Macedonia.
- 0:13When he had gone through the district
- 0:15[music] and had given them much
- 0:17exhortation, he came to Greece.
- 0:20And there he spent 3 months.
- 0:23And when a plot was formed [music]
- 0:25against him by the Jews,
- 0:27as he was about to set sail for Syria,
- 0:30>> [music]
- 0:30>> he decided to return through Macedonia.
- 0:34And he was accompanied by Sopater of
- 0:37Berea, [music] the son of Pyrrhus,
- 0:40and by Aristarchus
- 0:42and Secundus
- 0:45of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of
- 0:48Derby, and [music] Timothy, and
- 0:50Tychicus, and Trophimus of Asia.
- 0:55But these had gone on ahead and were
- 0:58waiting for us at Troas. [music]
- 1:01There's another us that Luke puts in
- 1:03that shows that he's in the company,
- 1:05too, though he does not name himself.
- 1:07[music]
- 1:09Um
- 1:10Luke is an amazing man.
- 1:12He's with Paul.
- 1:14Paul will even say in one of his
- 1:16epistles that when he was on trial,
- 1:19nobody was with him except Luke. And yet
- 1:22Luke never features himself at all in
- 1:25the story.
- 1:27He doesn't even list himself. He just
- 1:29uses the word us that says [music] he
- 1:32was also there. This is not a story
- 1:34about Luke. It's a story about Jesus,
- 1:37and he's
- 1:38telling it through the life of others,
- 1:40not himself.
- 1:43"We," Luke says, "we sailed from
- 1:45Philippi after the days of unleavened
- 1:48bread
- 1:48>> [music]
- 1:49>> and came to them at Troas within 5 days.
- 1:52And there we stayed 7 days.
- 1:55On the first day of the week, when we
- 1:57were gathered together to break bread,
- 1:59Paul began talking to them, intending to
- 2:02leave the next day, and he prolonged his
- 2:05message until midnight.
- 2:08Paul was preaching a lengthy sermon.
- 2:11What we're seeing here is that
- 2:14Paul is moving into a season where
- 2:17it seems like prior to this there was a
- 2:21a lapse in the intensity of hatred and
- 2:23persecution, and now it's picking up.
- 2:27It's picking up and picking up, and it's
- 2:29going to culminate when he gets to
- 2:31Jerusalem. But, that's what Luke is
- 2:33signaling. Persecution over here,
- 2:36persecution over there. There was a
- 2:38season where it didn't feel like that
- 2:39was happening as much. It's happening a
- 2:42lot now.
- 2:44But, Paul preached a long sermon that
- 2:46day. His message extended until
- 2:49midnight.
- 2:51There were many lamps in the upper room
- 2:54where we were gathered together,
- 2:56and there was a young man named Eutychus
- 3:00sitting on the window sill,
- 3:02sinking into a deep sleep.
- 3:06And as Paul kept on talking, he,
- 3:09Eutychus, was overcome by sleep, and
- 3:13fell down from the third floor, and was
- 3:16picked up dead.
- 3:20The moral of the story is don't sleep in
- 3:22church, or you may die.
- 3:25But, Paul went down and fell upon him,
- 3:29and after embracing him, he said,
- 3:32"Do not be troubled, for his life is in
- 3:35him."
- 3:37When he had gone back up, and had broken
- 3:39bread and eaten, he talked with them a
- 3:42long while until daybreak, and then
- 3:45left.
- 3:46They took away the boy alive, and were
- 3:49greatly comforted.
- 3:53Paul preaches a message that goes from
- 3:56Sabbath morning until midnight and from
- 3:59midnight
- 4:01until daybreak.
- 4:03You just wonder
- 4:05how much revelation, how much
- 4:08explanation of the Old Testament, how
- 4:11much vision for what God was going to do
- 4:13in the church was pouring out of this
- 4:16man.
- 4:18It's amazing. That's almost that's
- 4:19probably close to 20 hours
- 4:22of ministry.
- 4:24But we, going ahead to the ship, set
- 4:26sail for Assos, intending from there to
- 4:29take Paul on board.
- 4:30For so he had arranged it, intending
- 4:32himself to go by land.
- 4:35So they're traveling from Troas to
- 4:37Assos, and that's about a 20-mi journey,
- 4:41and Paul says, "I'm going to walk that
- 4:43journey myself. You guys go by boat."
- 4:46And he takes the 6-to-8-hour walk,
- 4:50perhaps to think and pray, meditate.
- 4:53And when he met us at Assos, we took him
- 4:56on board and came to Mitylene.
- 4:59Sailing from there, we arrived the
- 5:01following day opposite Chios.
- 5:04And the next day we crossed over to
- 5:06Samos, and the day following we came to
- 5:08Miletus.
- 5:10For Paul had decided to sail past
- 5:12Ephesus so that he would not have to
- 5:14spend time in Asia, for he was hurrying
- 5:17to be in Jerusalem if possible on the
- 5:20day of Pentecost.
- 5:23So Paul has already told the
- 5:25church in the previous chapter that God
- 5:28is calling him in the spirit to
- 5:31Jerusalem and to Rome.
- 5:33He doesn't know exactly how God's going
- 5:36to get him there.
- 5:38But
- 5:39Luke gives us this detail that Paul
- 5:41didn't want to stop in Ephesus and spend
- 5:44time with the church because he was
- 5:46feeling an urgency to get to Jerusalem
- 5:50if possible by the feast of Pentecost.
- 5:54And
- 5:56it feels like he took this inland walk,
- 5:59this 20-mi walk,
- 6:02because he's contemplating
- 6:05what's coming in Jerusalem. Seems like
- 6:07that's why Luke wants us to know these
- 6:09details.
- 6:11From Miletus,
- 6:13he sent to Ephesus and called to him the
- 6:16elders of the church.
- 6:18So, he doesn't go to Ephesus. He says,
- 6:20"Instead, have the elders meet me in
- 6:23Miletus."
- 6:24And when they had come to him, he said
- 6:26to them,
- 6:28"You yourselves know
- 6:30from the first day that I set foot in
- 6:32Asia
- 6:34how I was with you the whole time,
- 6:36serving the Lord with all humility
- 6:39and with tears and with trials which
- 6:42came upon me through the plots of the
- 6:45Jews.
- 6:46How I did not shrink from declaring to
- 6:49you anything that was profitable
- 6:52and teaching you publicly and from house
- 6:55to house,
- 6:57solemnly testifying to both Jews and
- 7:00Greeks of repentance toward God
- 7:03and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 7:07And now, behold,
- 7:09bound in spirit,
- 7:11I am on my way to Jerusalem,
- 7:13not knowing what will happen to me
- 7:15there,
- 7:17except that the Holy Spirit solemnly
- 7:21testifies to me in every city saying
- 7:24that bonds and affliction await me.
- 7:29But I do not consider my life of any
- 7:32account as dear to myself,
- 7:35so that I may finish my course
- 7:39and the ministry which I received from
- 7:41the Lord Jesus
- 7:42to testify solemnly of the gospel of the
- 7:46grace of God.
- 7:48And now behold, I know that all of you
- 7:51among whom I went about preaching the
- 7:53kingdom will no longer see my face.
- 7:57Therefore, I testify to you this day
- 8:00that I am innocent of the blood of all
- 8:02men
- 8:03for I did not shrink from declaring to
- 8:06you the whole purpose of God.
- 8:11Be on guard for yourselves and for the
- 8:14flock among which the Holy Spirit has
- 8:17made you overseers to shepherd the
- 8:20church of God which he purchased with
- 8:23his own blood.
- 8:25I know that after my departure savage
- 8:28wolves will come in among you not
- 8:31sparing the flock.
- 8:33And from among your own selves men will
- 8:35arise speaking perverse things to draw
- 8:38away the disciples after them.
- 8:41Therefore, be on the alert remembering
- 8:45that night and day for a period of 3
- 8:47years I did not cease to admonish each
- 8:51one with tears.
- 8:54And now
- 8:56I commend you to God and to the word
- 9:01of his grace
- 9:03which is able to build you up and to
- 9:06give you the inheritance among all those
- 9:09who are sanctified.
- 9:12I have coveted no one's silver or gold
- 9:15or clothes.
- 9:16You yourselves know that these hands
- 9:19ministered to my own needs and to the
- 9:22men who were with me. In everything I
- 9:24showed you that by working hard in this
- 9:27manner you must help the weak and
- 9:30remember the words of the Lord Jesus
- 9:33that he himself said, "It is more
- 9:35blessed to give than to receive.
- 9:39When he had said these things,
- 9:41he, Paul, knelt down and prayed with
- 9:45all.
- 9:46And they began to weep aloud and
- 9:48embraced Paul and repeatedly kissed him,
- 9:52grieving especially over the word which
- 9:55he had spoken, that they would not see
- 9:57his face again.
- 10:00And they were accompanying him to the
- 10:02ship.
- 10:06This is Paul's farewell address
- 10:09to the Ephesians church. He's going to
- 10:11write them letters.
- 10:13But this address
- 10:16is him saying, "I'm about to go to
- 10:18Jerusalem and I don't know what's
- 10:20coming, but the Holy Spirit is warning
- 10:22me in every city
- 10:24that they're going to put me in chains
- 10:26and I'm going to face persecution."
- 10:29But that's not keeping him from going.
- 10:32His mandate in his spirit to minister to
- 10:35the church at Jerusalem is stronger than
- 10:38his self-preservation.
- 10:41So, he asks the elders of the Ephesians
- 10:44church to come to him. This is the most
- 10:46established church in the entire Gentile
- 10:50world at this time.
- 10:51>> [clears throat]
- 10:52>> And he
- 10:53is preparing them
- 10:55and he tells them
- 10:56that they need to remember how he
- 10:59behaved among them.
- 11:01He wants them to remember
- 11:03that
- 11:04he built them up,
- 11:06that he showed tenderness,
- 11:09that his ministry was with weeping and
- 11:11faithfulness, with all humility.
- 11:14He wants them to remember that he was
- 11:16with them amidst trials and plots.
- 11:20But he says he did not shrink from
- 11:22declaring anything that was profitable.
- 11:25And then he tells them
- 11:27that
- 11:28he says, "I declare I am innocent of the
- 11:31blood of all men because I did not
- 11:34shrink from declaring the full counsel
- 11:36of God to you.
- 11:37Paul is saying, "I would be guilty of
- 11:40the things you're going to face if I
- 11:42held back the truth that could spare you
- 11:44from those things.
- 11:46But I am innocent because I told you the
- 11:48truth and now you are accountable to
- 11:51live in it."
- 11:53And then he tells them to be on their
- 11:55guard for themselves and for the flock.
- 11:58He's talking to the elders.
- 12:00And he says that the Holy Spirit is
- 12:02warning
- 12:03that ravenous savage wolves are going to
- 12:06come into the church.
- 12:08Now this prophecy from Paul is fulfilled
- 12:11when the church throws away the truth of
- 12:13Paul and adopts Greek and pagan
- 12:17teachings and doctrines about God and
- 12:19other foolish heresies.
- 12:22He says savage wolves are wolves are
- 12:24going to come and then he tells them,
- 12:26"And some of these wolves are going to
- 12:27come from among you, the elders."
- 12:31Therefore, be on the alert remembering
- 12:34night and day
- 12:35the period of 3 years where I did not
- 12:38cease to admonish each of you with
- 12:40tears.
- 12:41So part of being alert is remembering
- 12:44their foundation.
- 12:46Remembering the manner of ministry that
- 12:49gave them birth. And the implication is
- 12:51if you remember that, you won't be
- 12:54seduced by a new form of ministry that
- 12:57is not like mine.
- 13:00And then he says, "I commend you to God
- 13:03and to the word of his grace."
- 13:07God's grace is [music] his enabling
- 13:09power, his strength.
- 13:12God's grace is his anointing, but it
- 13:15comes through the word of his grace.
- 13:19His truth and his grace are one and the
- 13:21[music] same. So he commends them, that
- 13:24means he surrenders them
- 13:27to the word of his grace.
- 13:30And he tells them
- 13:32that that [music] word is able to build
- 13:34you up and give you the inheritance
- 13:36among those who are being sanctified.
- 13:39He tells them he had no self-seeking.
- 13:42[music]
- 13:43I did not covet any man's goods. I
- 13:45worked for my own food with my own
- 13:47hands.
- 13:49You didn't I didn't need your money. I
- 13:51didn't take your clothes.
- 13:53I didn't want to be a burden to you.
- 13:55And then he quotes Jesus.
- 13:57And we all quote this. He says, "As the
- 13:59Lord Jesus himself [music] said, it is
- 14:02more blessed to give than to receive."
- 14:04Do you know that doesn't show up in the
- 14:06Gospels?
- 14:08Paul knew something that Jesus said that
- 14:10isn't written down in the Gospels.
- 14:13But that was a famous [music] saying of
- 14:15Jesus that we get from Paul that we
- 14:17wouldn't get from Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 14:18and John. It's kind of interesting,
- 14:20[music] isn't it?
- 14:22When he had said these things, he knelt
- 14:23down and prayed with them.
- 14:25And they began to weep aloud.
- 14:28There's profound emotion and sorrow.
- 14:33And the Ephesian church is going to be
- 14:36faithful for many decades into the
- 14:38future, but in the end, they're going to
- 14:40lose out. And the ravenous wolves are
- 14:43going to win out. [music]
- 14:44And it's going to be because this
- 14:46admonition was not heeded as it should.
- 14:50So, there's sorrow, but there's so much
- 14:52to learn
- 14:53in how Paul [music] distinguished
- 14:55himself from the wolves that would be
- 14:57coming. And all true ministers must do
- 15:00[music] the same.
- 15:02They were grieving,
- 15:04but he is going to [music] Jerusalem
- 15:06bound by the Spirit.
- 15:08And they walked with him all the way to
- 15:10the ship.
- 15:30>> Mhm.
