- 0:00Acts chapter 2.
- 0:02When the day of Pentecost had come,
- 0:05they were all together
- 0:07in one place.
- 0:10Right there I'm going to stop.
- 0:12What was the day of Pentecost?
- 0:14That was the day
- 0:16when the entire nation of Israel
- 0:19celebrated
- 0:22the day that Moses came down from the
- 0:25mountain carrying [music] the tablets of
- 0:27stone.
- 0:29So,
- 0:30Luke wants us to know that God waited to
- 0:35birth his church until the birthday of
- 0:38the old nation.
- 0:40And on that day,
- 0:42when God birthed Israel with the law on
- 0:46stone,
- 0:47that is the day he's going to [music]
- 0:49birth Israel again
- 0:51with a new power, a new covenant. What
- 0:56is this covenant? Jeremiah speaks of
- 0:58this in Jeremiah 31:31,
- 1:01when he says, "Behold, the days are
- 1:02coming," says the Lord, [music] "when I
- 1:04will make a new covenant with the house
- 1:05of Israel, not like the one I made with
- 1:08their fathers when I took them by the
- 1:10hand and led them out of Egypt, but I
- 1:12will make a new covenant with them. I
- 1:15will put my law on their hearts
- 1:17>> [music]
- 1:18>> and write it on their minds, and I will
- 1:20cause or empower them to walk in my
- 1:24ways."
- 1:25>> [music]
- 1:25>> He goes on and he says, "I will forgive
- 1:27their lawless deeds and their sins I
- 1:30will remember no more."
- 1:32So, there's a new covenant. That's the
- 1:34promise made by the Father. That's the
- 1:37promise that Jesus reiterated. That's
- 1:40the promise that John the Baptist
- 1:42reiterated. This is the promise that
- 1:44Ezekiel spoke of when he said, "I will
- 1:46give them a new spirit. I will put my
- 1:48spirit in them
- 1:50>> [music]
- 1:50>> and cause them to walk in my statutes."
- 1:52This is the promise that Isaiah spoke of
- 1:55when he said, "My spirit will not depart
- 1:57from your descendants forever.
- 2:00And out of the dry places rivers will
- 2:02flow. This is going to fulfill what
- 2:04Jesus promised in John 7:37 when he
- 2:07said, "If you believe in me, out of your
- 2:09innermost being will flow rivers of
- 2:11living water." And John said he spoke
- 2:13this of the spirit, but why hadn't the
- 2:16spirit yet been given? Because the king
- 2:18had not taken his throne. The high
- 2:20priest had not entered the holy place of
- 2:22heaven itself. The new Moses had not
- 2:25gone up onto the mountain, heaven, where
- 2:28the cloud received him. And so, he could
- 2:30not yet release that blessing, that
- 2:33benediction, that gift from the new
- 2:36king, a gift of himself
- 2:40to us.
- 2:42So, when the day
- 2:44of the old covenant's birthday had fully
- 2:47come,
- 2:48in order to show that this was the birth
- 2:50of the new nation, the new kingdom,
- 2:53something special began to happen.
- 2:56When the day of Pentecost had fully
- 2:59come, the literal says, they were all
- 3:01together in one place.
- 3:04And suddenly, there came from heaven
- 3:08a noise like a violent rushing wind, and
- 3:13it filled the whole house where they
- 3:15were sitting.
- 3:18Now, Jesus had told Nicodemus that
- 3:22"Do not marvel that I say you must be
- 3:23born again, for the wind blows where it
- 3:25wishes. You don't know where it's coming
- 3:28from, and you don't know where it's
- 3:29going, but you hear its sound."
- 3:31And they were
- 3:33And there appeared to them tongues as of
- 3:36fire distributing themselves, and they
- 3:39rested on each one of them.
- 3:42And they were all filled with the Holy
- 3:45Spirit
- 3:46and began to speak with other tongues as
- 3:49the spirit was giving them
- 3:52voice or utterance.
- 3:55Now, there were Jews living in
- 3:57Jerusalem, devout men from every nation
- 4:00under heaven. And when this sound
- 4:04of speaking in tongues occurred,
- 4:07the the crowd came together and were
- 4:10bewildered because each one of them was
- 4:13hearing them speak in his own language.
- 4:17They were amazed and astonished saying,
- 4:19"Why are not all these who are speaking
- 4:22Galileans?
- 4:24And how is it that each
- 4:26And how is it that we each hear them in
- 4:28our own language to which we were born?
- 4:31Parthians and Medes and Elamites and
- 4:33residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
- 4:36Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and
- 4:39Pamphylia, Egypt and the district of
- 4:42Libya around Cyrene and visitors from
- 4:45Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans
- 4:48and Arabs, we hear them in our own
- 4:50tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of
- 4:54God.
- 4:56That God is working. That God is acting.
- 5:02And they all continued in amazement and
- 5:05great perplexity saying to one another,
- 5:07"What does this mean?" But others were
- 5:10mocking and saying, "They are full of
- 5:12sweet wine."
- 5:15Okay, so let's look at what has happened
- 5:18here.
- 5:19On the birthday of the old nation, God
- 5:23births a new nation.
- 5:25And as
- 5:27when Moses went up on the mountain,
- 5:31who came and wrote
- 5:33on the stone?
- 5:35The finger of God.
- 5:37By what? By a blazing fire.
- 5:40So, just as fire descended when Moses
- 5:43went up on the mountain, now the fire
- 5:45also has descended. But it's not writing
- 5:48in stone. It's descending on each and
- 5:51every one. Every person is receiving
- 5:56this gift. It's not just the high priest
- 5:58once a year.
- 5:59It's the presence of God coming into
- 6:02every human life.
- 6:04And then we have this miracle of
- 6:08glossolalia, unknown utterance, unknown
- 6:11tongues.
- 6:12But this is the voice. This is the
- 6:15utterance of the Father. This is the
- 6:17utterance of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:20And the miracle is two ways because it
- 6:23says that all of those gathered
- 6:26were hearing them all speak each in his
- 6:30own tongue.
- 6:31So, everybody thought the whole crowd of
- 6:34disciples were declaring the mighty
- 6:36works of God in his language. But then
- 6:39there apparently were some who were
- 6:40unbelieving and they said, "They're
- 6:42drunk. They're full of new wine."
- 6:45But this new language is the utterance
- 6:49of God taking over that most unruly
- 6:52member in a person's life. It's the sign
- 6:56that this devotedness to prayer has
- 7:00crossed a threshold of total surrender.
- 7:03And the same anointing that rested on
- 7:05Jesus is now coming into his people as
- 7:08they begin to speak things that they
- 7:10don't understand, but that God
- 7:12understands.
- 7:13And when they speak in tongues, Luke
- 7:16calls it a sound, and he uses the same
- 7:19word phone A that Jesus used when he
- 7:21talked to Nicodemus when he said, "A
- 7:23sound occurs." It's the sound of the
- 7:27voice of God. It's the sound of people
- 7:30speaking not what their own minds are
- 7:33coming up with, but what the Father is
- 7:35uttering through them. It's the mighty
- 7:37works of God coming out of their mouths.
- 7:41Do you understand? And it's phenomenal
- 7:45that this is the complete inversion of
- 7:49Babel.
- 7:50Here, they're all together of one mind
- 7:53and one accord, and a sound comes where
- 7:57the almighty God begins to speak his
- 8:00voice through them, and it does not
- 8:02cause confusion. It causes the greatest
- 8:05unity the world has ever known because
- 8:08it is the voice of a new language. It is
- 8:10the voice of the Holy Spirit.
- 8:13Some began to mock,
- 8:15but Peter,
- 8:17taking his stand
- 8:19with the 11,
- 8:21raised his voice and declared to them.
- 8:26Peter, throughout all the gospels, has
- 8:28tried to show how he's different than
- 8:30the 11.
- 8:32He's better, stronger, more loyal.
- 8:35He loves Jesus more than these, right?
- 8:39But now he takes his stand with the 11
- 8:43because he's lost his independence. He's
- 8:46surrendered his holier-than-thou images,
- 8:50and he's just so glad to be one lively
- 8:53stones, one lively stone in a new house
- 8:57and temple that God is building. So, he
- 8:59takes his stand with the 11.
- 9:02And he says And he raises his voice.
- 9:05This man has power that he didn't used
- 9:08to have.
- 9:10This man is the same guy who denied he
- 9:12knew Jesus to a servant girl, but now a
- 9:15multitude is gathered.
- 9:17Maybe in the temple courts, we don't
- 9:19know. And he raises his voice, and he
- 9:22begins to speak.
- 9:24And this this same yieldedness to the
- 9:27unknown tongue is now a yieldedness to
- 9:30God's ways that are higher even when we
- 9:32do understand what we're saying.
- 9:35He raised his voice and declared to
- 9:37them, "Men of Judea and all who live in
- 9:40Jerusalem, let this be known to you and
- 9:43give heed to my words.
- 9:46For these men are not drunk as you
- 9:48suppose, for it is only the third hour
- 9:50of the day, 9:00 in the morning.
- 9:53But this is what was spoken of through
- 9:56the prophet Joel.
- 9:58And it shall be in the last days, God
- 10:00says, that I will pour forth of my
- 10:04spirit on all mankind.
- 10:07And your sons and your daughters shall
- 10:10prophesy, and your young men shall see
- 10:12visions, and your old men shall dream
- 10:15dreams. Even on my bondservants, both
- 10:18men and women, I will in those days pour
- 10:21forth of my spirit, and they shall
- 10:23prophesy. And I will grant wonders in
- 10:26the sky above and signs on the earth
- 10:28below, blood and fire and vapor of
- 10:31smoke. The sun will be turned into
- 10:33darkness and the moon into blood before
- 10:35the great and glorious day of the Lord
- 10:38shall come. And it shall be that
- 10:40everyone who calls on the name of the
- 10:43Lord will be saved. So, he quotes this
- 10:45large section from Joel. And he says,
- 10:49this speaking in tongues that makes you
- 10:51think we're drunk,
- 10:52that is a sound
- 10:54that Jesus said would accompany those
- 10:56who are born of the spirit, this is not
- 10:59drunkenness. This is what was spoken of
- 11:02by the prophet Joel. I will pour out my
- 11:04spirit on all mankind. So, the first
- 11:08thing he says is, this is the outpouring
- 11:10of the spirit. This isn't a strange
- 11:12one-time event that'll never occur
- 11:14again. This is what God promised he'll
- 11:17give to all mankind.
- 11:20Verse 22, men of Israel, listen to these
- 11:23words. Do you hear the boldness? What
- 11:26has changed in Peter? He has the power
- 11:29of the spirit and he didn't have it
- 11:30before.
- 11:31What has changed in Peter? He's come to
- 11:33repentance. He's no longer seeking to
- 11:36save his life. He's not running from
- 11:38pain. He's being girded up and carried
- 11:41and taken in a way he never would have
- 11:43gone, but he's glad he's going there.
- 11:46Men of Israel, listen to these words.
- 11:49Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to
- 11:53you by God with miracles and wonders and
- 11:55signs, which God performed through him
- 11:59in your midst, just as you yourselves
- 12:02know, this man delivered over by the
- 12:05predetermined plan and foreknowledge of
- 12:07God, you nailed to a cross by the hands
- 12:12of godless men and put him to death.
- 12:17He says what he was doing wasn't him, it
- 12:19was God in him working through him. He
- 12:22was a man, but God was in him. And you,
- 12:26you nailed him to a cross. Your sin
- 12:29killed Jesus.
- 12:31And that's a message that should pierce
- 12:33every one of our hearts.
- 12:35Because our sin is what nailed him to
- 12:37the cross.
- 12:40But
- 12:42Peter goes on, but God raised him up
- 12:46again, putting an end to the agony of
- 12:50death, since it was impossible for him
- 12:53to be held in its power.
- 12:56He had no sin, so death had no power.
- 13:00And ultimately, he submitted to death's
- 13:02power just to take the power of death
- 13:04away, to disarm the devil, to knock the
- 13:08weapon out of the enemy's hand.
- 13:12For David says of him, of Jesus, I saw
- 13:16the Lord always in my presence, for he
- 13:19is at my right hand, so that I will not
- 13:21be shaken. Therefore, my heart was glad
- 13:24and my tongue exalted. Moreover, my
- 13:27flesh also will live in hope, because
- 13:30you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
- 13:34meaning the grave, nor allow your holy
- 13:37one, the Messiah, to undergo decay.
- 13:42You have made known to me the ways of
- 13:44life. You will make me full of gladness
- 13:47with your presence.
- 13:49So, he's saying David prophesied
- 13:53that the Messiah
- 13:54would not rot in a tomb.
- 13:57Three days was not enough time for that
- 13:59to happen. You will not allow your holy
- 14:02one to undergo decay
- 14:04before he's resurrected,
- 14:06because in his presence, he will find
- 14:09gladness.
- 14:10The spirit of God is going to reenter
- 14:14that man that laid down everything to be
- 14:17the lamb and the propitiation of our
- 14:19sins.
- 14:21Brethren,
- 14:22I may confidently say to you regarding
- 14:25the patriarch David, that he both died
- 14:28and was buried and his tomb is with us
- 14:30to this day.
- 14:31Peter's saying he decayed.
- 14:34He rotted.
- 14:35His body's gone.
- 14:37His tomb is still here. You could
- 14:38probably find the bones. So, it's not
- 14:41talking about David. Peter's saying,
- 14:43who's it talking about? And so, because
- 14:46he was a prophet and knew that God had
- 14:48sworn to him with an oath to seat one of
- 14:51his descendants on his throne,
- 14:54he looked ahead and spoke of the
- 14:56resurrection of the Christ,
- 14:59that he was neither abandoned to Hades
- 15:02nor did his flesh suffer decay.
- 15:06He was not left in the grave nor did his
- 15:09body rot there.
- 15:11This Jesus God raised up again, to which
- 15:16we are all witnesses. Therefore, having
- 15:20been exalted to the right hand of God
- 15:23and having received from the Father the
- 15:25promise of the Holy Spirit, he has
- 15:28poured forth this
- 15:30which you both see
- 15:32and hear.
- 15:34The Holy Spirit is the promise. The
- 15:38Father was going to send it in Jesus'
- 15:40name. Of course, Jesus is the Father, so
- 15:42he says, he, Jesus, has poured forth
- 15:46this that you both see
- 15:49and hear.
- 15:51Jesus told Nicodemus, when you're born
- 15:53of the spirit, you don't know where it's
- 15:55coming from and where it's going, but
- 15:56you hear its sound. So, it is with
- 15:58everyone who is born of the spirit.
- 16:00Peter says, when you're born of the
- 16:01spirit, you see it and you hear it.
- 16:05It's not an invisible, inaudible,
- 16:08imaginary experience. It's something
- 16:10that changes your life. It's something
- 16:13that makes other people freak out. It's
- 16:15something that makes them think you
- 16:16might be drunk, and maybe they'll mock,
- 16:19maybe they'll rejoice, but you see it
- 16:22and you hear it.
- 16:23The pouring forth of the Holy Spirit.
- 16:28For it was not David who ascended into
- 16:30heaven, but he himself says, the Lord
- 16:32said to my Lord, sit at my right hand
- 16:35until I make your enemies a footstool to
- 16:37your feet. Therefore, let all the house
- 16:40of Israel know for certain that God has
- 16:42made him both Lord and Christ, this
- 16:45Jesus whom you crucified. Now, when they
- 16:48heard this, they were pierced to the
- 16:50heart.
- 16:53The Jews, some who were marveling, some
- 16:55who were mocking when they when they
- 16:57heard it.
- 16:58They were pierced to the heart.
- 17:02And said to Peter and the rest of the
- 17:04apostles,
- 17:05brethren,
- 17:07what shall we do?
- 17:11And Peter answers
- 17:12with the gospel of the kingdom.
- 17:16Peter was given the keys to the kingdom.
- 17:20So, he pulls them out and he uses them
- 17:22right here. And he opens the door.
- 17:26Amen.
- 17:27He's going to give them the threefold
- 17:28gospel and how they can believe and obey
- 17:31it. The gospel is the death,
- 17:35burial, and resurrection of Jesus
- 17:37Christ. And so, he's going to tell them,
- 17:40you can obey and believe that gospel
- 17:42when you die to your sin in repentance,
- 17:45when you bury your sin in the covenant
- 17:47of baptism, and when you're resurrected
- 17:51in newness of life through the power of
- 17:53the Holy Spirit.
- 17:54Amen. That's the gospel, but it's not
- 17:57just a gospel
- 17:58that we hear about. It's the gospel of
- 18:01the kingdom. So, Peter and the 120 are
- 18:05the first members of this new nation.
- 18:08But they're standing there inside the
- 18:09gates with the keys in their hands
- 18:11saying, we can help others come into
- 18:13this new kingdom as well.
- 18:16They say to him, men and brethren, what
- 18:19shall we do?
- 18:22Well, not what shall we think?
- 18:24Not what shall we remember?
- 18:27What shall we do?
- 18:29Peter tells them, Peter said to them,
- 18:32repent
- 18:34and each of you be baptized in the name
- 18:37of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
- 18:40your sins,
- 18:41and you will receive the gift of the
- 18:44Holy Spirit.
- 18:46For the promise
- 18:48and the promise says, this is what the
- 18:50Father promised. This is what just
- 18:52happened in Jerusalem. This is what they
- 18:55were supposed to wait for. This is when
- 18:57they're clothed with power. It's all the
- 18:59promise. For the promise is for you.
- 19:05It's not just us.
- 19:07It's not just a strange miracle one
- 19:09time. The promise is for you
- 19:13and for your children
- 19:15and for all who are afar off,
- 19:18as many as the Lord our God will call to
- 19:22himself.
- 19:25It is through the spirit that the Lord
- 19:27our God regains communion with us.
- 19:30It is through the spirit that we pass
- 19:33through the flaming sword. No longer
- 19:36with our hearts condemning us because of
- 19:38the blood of Jesus, a new and living way
- 19:42opens. The flaming swords at Eden are no
- 19:45longer there. We can have communion with
- 19:47God again. The Lord our God calls us to
- 19:52himself to communion with himself
- 19:55through the Holy Spirit.
- 19:58And with many other words, he Peter
- 20:00solemnly testified and kept on exhorting
- 20:03them saying,
- 20:05"Be saved from this perverse
- 20:08generation."
- 20:10Get out of this way of thinking that
- 20:14just killed Jesus.
- 20:16Get out of this way of thinking that's
- 20:17so committed
- 20:19to its own pride and its own
- 20:20expectations that it would nail the son
- 20:24of God to a tree and mock him as he
- 20:26died.
- 20:28Get out of this perverse generation.
- 20:31It's an exodus. It's a leaving of a
- 20:33generation and an entrance into a
- 20:37regeneration. And this regeneration is
- 20:40the kingdom of God. And this generation,
- 20:43this regeneration will not pass away
- 20:45until the Lord returns
- 20:47for that final time.
- 20:50So then, those who had received his
- 20:53word, which means gladly welcomed it,
- 20:57so then those who had received his word
- 21:00were baptized.
- 21:02And that day there were added about
- 21:053,000
- 21:07souls.
- 21:08Does that number ring a bell in your
- 21:10mind?
- 21:11Exodus 28 tells us that 3,000 were
- 21:15killed
- 21:18on the giving of the law because of
- 21:20their sin.
- 21:233,000 couldn't
- 21:25come near the presence of God. The Lord
- 21:28our God could not receive them to
- 21:31himself. They stood afar off and they
- 21:34begged that no word be spoken.
- 21:37But when they heard the voice of God
- 21:39through his people, they marveled and
- 21:42they said, "What is this? How do we
- 21:44become part of it?"
- 21:46And 3,000
- 21:48were not killed. They were added
- 21:51to the church.
- 21:53On this birthday of a new nation,
- 21:56they were continually devoting
- 21:59themselves. So here we have the word
- 22:01devote again and now we're going to see
- 22:03what the first church looked like. They
- 22:06were continually devoting themselves to
- 22:09the apostles teaching.
- 22:12They wanted to learn more about God.
- 22:14These 3,000 were in constant teaching.
- 22:20To the apostles teaching and to
- 22:23fellowship.
- 22:25They were breaking bread. They were
- 22:27laughing. They were sharing meals.
- 22:30To the breaking of bread and to prayer.
- 22:35Teaching, fellowship, prayer, food.
- 22:39That's the church.
- 22:42Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe.
- 22:47Oh man.
- 22:48Our God is an awesome God. He reigns
- 22:53from heaven above on those who like
- 22:56Peter
- 22:57have dropped all of their defenses, all
- 23:00of their self-confidence
- 23:02and allowed themselves to be filled with
- 23:04his spirit.
- 23:05Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe.
- 23:09And many wonders and signs were taking
- 23:12place through the apostles.
- 23:15And all those who had believed were
- 23:18together
- 23:20and had all things in common.
- 23:23If they had a
- 23:25If they had a horse, you could use it.
- 23:27If they had a house, let's meet at my
- 23:29place.
- 23:31I brought some food, let's eat it
- 23:32together. It's not just for my family.
- 23:35They had all things in common and they
- 23:38began selling their property and
- 23:40possessions and were sharing them with
- 23:42all as anyone might have need.
- 23:45So-and-so suffering, well, I've got a
- 23:47little extra. Let me sell and help out.
- 23:51Day by day continuing with one mind in
- 23:55the temple and breaking bread from house
- 23:57to house, they were taking their [music]
- 23:59meals together with gladness and
- 24:02sincerity of heart.
- 24:06They were happy.
- 24:08They were together.
- 24:10All of the divisions, all the rivalries,
- 24:14all the I want to be the best, I want to
- 24:17be the greatest, I want to sit on your
- 24:18left, I want to sit on your right. What
- 24:21about this man? All of it has melted
- 24:23away
- 24:25because they've been received into the
- 24:27very presence of the God who is love.
- 24:31And they've got gladness of heart. They
- 24:34were praising God and having favor with
- 24:37all people.
- 24:38And the Lord was adding to their number
- 24:41day by day those who were being saved.
- 24:47And that
- 24:48is the birthday of the new nation, of
- 24:51the church. That is when the disciples
- 24:54no longer ask any questions about the
- 24:56kingdom.
- 24:57Now they know. They don't just know
- 24:59about it, they're living in it.
- 25:02The first Adam became a living soul,
- 25:04[music] but the second Adam became a
- 25:07life-giving spirit. He had descended not
- 25:12carrying tablets of [music] stone,
- 25:14but giving himself to us
- 25:17that he would be with us forever and
- 25:19that where he [music] was with the
- 25:21Father in that union with God, we also
- 25:24could be. This is where his servants
- 25:26came to be with him. This is where the
- 25:29following culminated in the union,
- 25:32>> [music]
- 25:32>> in the indwelling,
- 25:34in the baptism, in the outpouring, in
- 25:37the rebirth
- 25:38of the Holy Spirit.
- 25:52>> [music]
