- 0:00Acts chapter [music] 13.
- 0:02Now there were at Antioch in the church
- 0:05that was there prophets and teachers,
- 0:09Barnabas and [music] Simon, who was
- 0:10called Niger,
- 0:12and Lucius of Cyrene,
- 0:14and Manaen, who had been brought up
- 0:17[music] with Herod the tetrarch, and
- 0:19Saul.
- 0:22While they were ministering to the Lord
- 0:24and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
- 0:27"Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for
- 0:30the work to which I have called them."
- 0:34Then, when they had fasted and prayed
- 0:37and laid their hands on them, they sent
- 0:40them away.
- 0:42So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit,
- 0:45[music] they went down to Seleucia, and
- 0:48from there they sailed to Cyprus.
- 0:52So, here we have this scene. It seems
- 0:55abstract, but it's not.
- 0:57Luke is telling us
- 0:59that Paul and Barnabas
- 1:02were put into apostolic ministry in a
- 1:05very specific manner.
- 1:08The term that he uses, "sent out," that
- 1:11is the apostolic commissioning,
- 1:14apostello. They were sent out.
- 1:17But he tells us how they came to this.
- 1:20He says they were sent out by the Holy
- 1:23Spirit.
- 1:25Amen?
- 1:26But he tells us how the Holy Spirit
- 1:29worked through a plurality
- 1:32of an eldership that was comprised of
- 1:35many different gifts.
- 1:37So, he starts off by telling us that
- 1:40there were prophets and teachers.
- 1:44He doesn't say there were ministers who
- 1:46prophesied,
- 1:47which any minister can do situationally.
- 1:50And he doesn't say there were ministers
- 1:52who taught occasionally, which everybody
- 1:54must be able to teach. He says there
- 1:56were prophets
- 1:58and teachers.
- 2:00But you know what there wasn't? There
- 2:02wasn't apostles in that region.
- 2:05So the elders
- 2:06who were there gathered together and
- 2:09began to fast and pray to know who God
- 2:13was putting this mantle of apostleship
- 2:15on.
- 2:17And the Lord identified Paul and
- 2:19Barnabas as
- 2:22these apostles.
- 2:24And so they sent them out.
- 2:28Verse 4, so being sent out by the Holy
- 2:30Spirit
- 2:32they went down to Seleucia and from
- 2:34there they sailed to Cyprus.
- 2:37When they reached Salamis, they began to
- 2:40proclaim the word of God in the
- 2:42synagogues of the Jews.
- 2:44And they also had John, John Mark, as
- 2:47their helper.
- 2:49When they had gone through the whole
- 2:50island as far as Paphos, they found a
- 2:53magician
- 2:54a Jewish false prophet whose name was
- 2:58Bar-Jesus
- 3:00which means son of Jesus.
- 3:02Who was with the proconsul
- 3:05Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence.
- 3:09This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and
- 3:12sought to hear the word of God.
- 3:15But Elymas, the magician, for so his
- 3:18name is translated
- 3:20so the Bar-Jesus guy is also called
- 3:22Elymas
- 3:25was opposing them seeking to turn the
- 3:28proconsul away from the truth.
- 3:31So
- 3:32this city official, proconsul
- 3:35is wanting to hear the truth. Saul and
- 3:38Barnabas are preaching it.
- 3:40But this
- 3:42magician, this false prophet
- 3:45a Bar-Jesus Elymas
- 3:48he
- 3:49is trying to turn the pro Council
- 3:52against the faith.
- 3:55But Saul,
- 3:56who was also known as Paul,
- 3:59filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his
- 4:01gaze on him.
- 4:03He's about to say something to Elymas.
- 4:05Now,
- 4:06Paul means small.
- 4:10And
- 4:11his Hebrew name is Saul. It was his
- 4:15entire life and it still is in heaven.
- 4:18And that refers to his
- 4:21membership in the Jewish community.
- 4:24It refers to his
- 4:27participation in the tribe of Benjamin.
- 4:30Right?
- 4:32But he's also got this name Paul. And
- 4:34it's not a transliteration of Saul.
- 4:37Instead, it means small and it is his
- 4:42Greek name.
- 4:43And sometimes they would give people a
- 4:46name that rhymed or sounded similar to
- 4:49another. That's sometimes how the
- 4:51Hebrews,
- 4:52uh, they would rhyme things things
- 4:54together to kind of point toward each
- 4:55other. So, Saul and Paul sound a little
- 4:57bit similar to us. That may have played
- 4:59a part, but he had two names.
- 5:02And when Paul is ministering and
- 5:04involved deeply with the Gentiles, he's
- 5:06known by Paul.
- 5:08And when he's ministering and deeply
- 5:09involved with the Jews, he's known by
- 5:11Saul. But he has both of these names.
- 5:14It's just the way it is at that time.
- 5:18So, here is where his name starts being
- 5:20called Paul as soon as he starts really
- 5:22ministering with the Gentiles.
- 5:25But Saul, who was also known as Paul,
- 5:29filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his
- 5:31gaze on him, Elymas.
- 5:35And he said, "You are full of all deceit
- 5:39and fraud, you son of the devil,
- 5:43you enemy of all righteousness.
- 5:46Will you not cease to make crooked the
- 5:49straight ways of the Lord?
- 5:53This is a pretty sharp rebuke.
- 5:56Notice how the Bible tells us that true
- 5:59ministry makes the Lord's path straight.
- 6:04John the Baptist comes to prepare the
- 6:07way of the Lord.
- 6:08So, true ministry does the work of
- 6:11repentance to remove rubble and
- 6:14stumbling blocks out of the way so that
- 6:17the authority of Christ has clear access
- 6:20into the throne of our hearts to take
- 6:22his place there.
- 6:24But, obstructionary ministry
- 6:27puts stumbling blocks in front of
- 6:29people, raises questions that shouldn't
- 6:31be there, puts pitfalls that shouldn't
- 6:34be there.
- 6:35And he's not doing it because he has a
- 6:38burden for the proconsul. He's not doing
- 6:41it out of some sincere theological
- 6:44quandary.
- 6:45He's doing it because he's envious,
- 6:48because he has a place of influence that
- 6:50he fears he's about to lose.
- 6:53And the Apostle Paul does not look
- 6:55favorably upon it.
- 6:59So, he says to him,
- 7:01"You are full of all deceit and fraud,
- 7:05you son of the devil.
- 7:07You enemy of all righteousness.
- 7:11Will you not cease to make crooked the
- 7:13straight ways of the Lord? Now, behold,
- 7:17the hand of the Lord is upon you,
- 7:19and you will be blind and not see the
- 7:22sun for a time."
- 7:25You're going to
- 7:27obscure the light of God's word from
- 7:29others?
- 7:30You're going to make it where people
- 7:31don't glory in the word of truth in the
- 7:34preaching of the gospel of God?
- 7:36Well, guess what? The light's going to
- 7:38go out in your own life.
- 7:43And immediately a mist and a darkness
- 7:46fell upon him
- 7:48and he went about seeking those who
- 7:50would lead him by the hand.
- 7:53Then the proconsul believed when he saw
- 7:56what had happened
- 7:57being amazed at the teaching of the
- 8:00Lord.
- 8:02It all became clear, didn't it?
- 8:06Now Paul and his companions put out to
- 8:10sea from Paphos
- 8:12and came to Perga
- 8:14in Pamphylia.
- 8:16But John left them and returned to
- 8:19Jerusalem. That is the young man John
- 8:21Mark who was supposed to be their
- 8:23helper, their aid.
- 8:26But going on from Perga
- 8:29they arrived at Pisidian Antioch and on
- 8:31the Sabbath day they went into the
- 8:33synagogue and sat down.
- 8:36After the reading of the law and the
- 8:38prophets, the synagogue officials sent
- 8:40to them saying, "Brethren,
- 8:42if you have any word of exhortation for
- 8:44the people, say it."
- 8:48Paul stood up and motioning with his
- 8:50hand
- 8:51said, "Men of Israel."
- 8:53So, motioning with his hand, Luke is
- 8:55giving us an insight that Paul in his
- 8:59preaching he was demonstrative. He used
- 9:02his hands.
- 9:04"Men of Israel and you who fear God,
- 9:07listen.
- 9:08The God of this people Israel chose our
- 9:11fathers
- 9:13and made the people great during their
- 9:15stay in the land of Egypt.
- 9:17And with an uplifted arm
- 9:19he led them out from it.
- 9:23For a period of about 40 years he put up
- 9:25with them in the wilderness.
- 9:28When he had destroyed seven nations in
- 9:30the land of Canaan he distributed their
- 9:33land as an inheritance all of which took
- 9:36about 450 years.
- 9:40After these things, he gave them judges
- 9:42until Samuel the prophet.
- 9:44Then they asked for a king, and God gave
- 9:47them Saul, the son of Kish, a man of the
- 9:50tribe of Benjamin, for 40 years.
- 9:54After he had removed him, he raised up
- 9:56David to be their king, concerning whom
- 9:59he also testified and said, "I have
- 10:01found David, the son of Jesse, a man
- 10:04after my heart, who will do all my
- 10:07will."
- 10:10From the descendants of this man,
- 10:12according to promise, God has brought to
- 10:15Israel a savior, Jesus.
- 10:20After John had proclaimed before his
- 10:22coming a baptism of repentance to all
- 10:24the people of Israel.
- 10:27And while John was completing his
- 10:29course, he kept saying, "What do you
- 10:32suppose that I am? I am not he, but
- 10:35behold, one is coming after me, the
- 10:38sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to
- 10:41untie."
- 10:42So, the Apostle Paul is telling them
- 10:44their story, and he's saying, "This is
- 10:47how God started us out. Hard times in
- 10:50the wilderness. He used the the judges
- 10:52until Samuel the prophet. Then he gave a
- 10:55king, but then he had a king who was
- 10:57after his heart, who would do his will.
- 11:00And that king was going to have a son,
- 11:03and his name is Jesus." And then he
- 11:04shows them how John prophesied and
- 11:08pointed toward Jesus, and Paul quotes
- 11:11from the Gospels.
- 11:13So, the Gospel message that John says
- 11:16that his sandals he is not fit to tie,
- 11:18Paul is already quoting that.
- 11:21Now, he hadn't become a Christian until
- 11:22long after Jesus ascended, but he's
- 11:25already quoting from the Gospels.
- 11:27"Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and
- 11:30those among you who fear God, to us the
- 11:33message of this salvation has been sent.
- 11:36This is what it looks like when Paul
- 11:38walks into a synagogue and begins to
- 11:40preach to the Jews. For those who live
- 11:42in Jerusalem and their rulers,
- 11:45recognizing neither him nor the
- 11:47utterances of the prophets which are
- 11:49read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by
- 11:53condemning him.
- 11:56>> [sighs]
- 11:57>> And though they found no ground for
- 11:58putting him to death, they asked Pilate
- 12:01that he be executed.
- 12:03When they had carried out all that was
- 12:05written concerning him, they took him
- 12:07down from the cross and laid him in a
- 12:10tomb.
- 12:12But God raised him from the dead.
- 12:16And for many days he appeared to those
- 12:19who came up with him from Galilee to
- 12:21Jerusalem,
- 12:22the very ones who are now his witnesses
- 12:25to the people.
- 12:27And we preach to you the good news of
- 12:30the promise made to the fathers that God
- 12:33has fulfilled this promise to our
- 12:35children in that he raised up Jesus,
- 12:39as it is also written in the second
- 12:42Psalm, "You are my son, today I have
- 12:46begotten you."
- 12:48As for the fact that he raised him from
- 12:51the dead, no longer to return to decay,
- 12:54he has spoken in this way, "I will give
- 12:56you the holy and sure blessing of
- 12:59David."
- 13:00Therefore, he also says in another
- 13:02Psalm, "You will not allow your holy one
- 13:05to undergo decay."
- 13:08Paul is preaching from their scriptures
- 13:11who Jesus was, that he fulfills the
- 13:14promise.
- 13:16For David, after he had served the
- 13:17purpose of God in his own generation,
- 13:19fell asleep and was laid among his
- 13:22fathers and underwent decay.
- 13:25But whom God raised did not undergo
- 13:28decay.
- 13:29Therefore, let it be known to you,
- 13:31brethren, that through him forgiveness
- 13:33of sins is proclaimed to you.
- 13:38The curse of sin, the judgement of sin
- 13:41is death, but Jesus is not bound by it.
- 13:45So, if you can accept and come into him,
- 13:48then you don't have to be bound in your
- 13:49sins, either.
- 13:51And through him, everyone who believes
- 13:54is freed from all things from which he
- 13:57could not be freed through the law of
- 13:59Moses.
- 14:01Therefore, take heed, so that the things
- 14:03spoken of in the prophets may not come
- 14:06upon you. Behold, you scoffers, and
- 14:09marvel, and perish, for I am
- 14:11accomplishing a work in your days, a
- 14:14work which you will never believe,
- 14:17though someone should describe it to
- 14:19you.
- 14:20So, he's saying, you're still bound.
- 14:23Jesus had told them in John 8
- 14:26that anyone who commits sin is a slave
- 14:28to sin, but Paul is saying you can be
- 14:30freed, not just from the guilt of your
- 14:33sin, but from the power of your sin.
- 14:35And don't be like these scoffers,
- 14:38because God's going to do a work in your
- 14:40day that you can't believe. And the work
- 14:42that he was going to do in the day of
- 14:43the Jewish people that Paul was
- 14:44preaching to, he was going to tear down
- 14:46the temple, he was going to scatter the
- 14:48nation, everything they put their trust
- 14:51in
- 14:51was going to be brought to nothing
- 14:53unless they put their trust in him
- 14:56who does not allow us to come to shame.
- 14:59As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the
- 15:01people kept begging that these things
- 15:04might be spoken to them the next
- 15:06Sabbath.
- 15:07Now, when the meeting of the synagogue
- 15:09had broken up, many of the Jews and of
- 15:12the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul
- 15:14and Barnabas,
- 15:16who, speaking to them, were urging them
- 15:18to continue in the grace of God.
- 15:21The grace of God not something you
- 15:23think. It's not a moment in time. It's
- 15:26something that you start in and that you
- 15:28must continue in.
- 15:30The next Sabbath, nearly the whole city
- 15:32assembled to hear the word of the Lord.
- 15:36But when the Jews saw the crowds,
- 15:39they were filled with jealousy
- 15:42and began contradicting the things
- 15:44spoken by Paul and were blaspheming.
- 15:48Jealousy is the first sin that caused
- 15:51murder in the Bible. Jealousy is what
- 15:53killed Jesus. Jealousy is what drove the
- 15:57persecution of the first apostles. It's
- 15:59what fought Paul at every turn and it is
- 16:02still the greatest plague in the church
- 16:04to this day.
- 16:07Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and
- 16:10said, "It was necessary that the word of
- 16:14God be spoken to you first, since you
- 16:17repudiated and judge yourselves unworthy
- 16:21of eternal life, behold, we are turning
- 16:23to the Gentiles."
- 16:25So, Paul and Barnabas said, "Since you
- 16:28reject it, you judge yourselves unworthy
- 16:31of eternal life."
- 16:32God didn't judge them. God didn't
- 16:34predestine them to hell. They judged
- 16:36themselves
- 16:37>> [music]
- 16:37>> unworthy of eternal life. And since they
- 16:40repudiated it, Paul's turning to the
- 16:42Gentiles
- 16:43>> [music]
- 16:43>> and they're not going to like that.
- 16:45"We are turning to the Gentiles, for the
- 16:47Lord has commanded us, 'I have placed
- 16:50you as a light for the Gentiles that you
- 16:53[music] may bring salvation to the ends
- 16:55of the earth.'" He's quoting the Old
- 16:58Testament.
- 16:59When the Gentiles heard this, they began
- 17:01rejoicing and glorifying the word of the
- 17:04Lord and as many as had been appointed
- 17:07to eternal life believed.
- 17:10And the word of the Lord was being
- 17:11spread through the whole region.
- 17:14But the Jews incited the devout women of
- 17:17prominence and the leading men of the
- 17:20city and instigated a persecution
- 17:23against Paul and Barnabas [music] and
- 17:24drove them out of their district. That
- 17:27means they went around to talk to the
- 17:29wealthy people. They sowed dissension
- 17:32among brothers. Have you heard what
- 17:34they're doing? I remember they did such
- 17:36and such. They went around to the big
- 17:38people, to the know-it-alls, to the
- 17:41aristocrats in the city and drove them
- 17:43out of [music] the district.
- 17:46But Paul and Barnabas, they shook off
- 17:48the dust of their feet in protest
- 17:51against them and went to Iconium.
- 17:54And the disciples were continually
- 17:56filled with joy and with the Holy
- 17:58Spirit.
- 18:00So they're doing exactly what Jesus
- 18:02[music] told them to do
- 18:03in Matthew 10. When someone doesn't
- 18:06receive your message, don't let the dust
- 18:10from their city go with you.
- 18:12Which means when someone does receive
- 18:14your message, you take them with you in
- 18:16your heart. And you leave some of your
- 18:18soul with them. You're being connected.
- 18:21But when they don't, don't even take
- 18:22their dust. Don't take their goods,
- 18:25[music] don't take their money, don't
- 18:26take anything.
- 18:27So that they can't have any claim on
- 18:29what God is doing in the future.
- 18:43>> [music]
