- 0:00Acts chapter 10.
- 0:02We've just learned about Peter's
- 0:04ministry
- 0:06in the town of Joppa, that he's staying
- 0:08there at the house of Simon the Tanner.
- 0:12And [music] uh
- 0:14verse one begins like this.
- 0:17Now, there was a man at Caesarea named
- 0:21Cornelius,
- 0:23a centurion
- 0:25of what was called the Italian cohort,
- 0:29a devout man and one [music] who feared
- 0:32God with all his household,
- 0:34and gave many alms to the Jewish people,
- 0:38and prayed [music] to God continually.
- 0:41So, here we have a Gentile who is some
- 0:44kind of convert to faith in the God of
- 0:47Israel.
- 0:49He's giving alms, which means
- 0:51contributions, money [music] gifts, and
- 0:53other charitable offerings to the poor,
- 0:57and he's praying to God continually.
- 0:59He's a devout man. [music] He's
- 1:00God-fearing with his whole household.
- 1:04About the ninth hour of the day, he,
- 1:08Cornelius, clearly saw in a vision an
- 1:11angel of God who had just come in and
- 1:14said to him, "Cornelius."
- 1:18And fixing his gaze on him and being
- 1:21much alarmed, he said, "What is it,
- 1:24Lord?"
- 1:26And he said to him, "Your prayers and
- 1:29your alms have ascended as [music] a
- 1:32memorial before God.
- 1:36Now, dispatch some men to Joppa and send
- 1:42for a man named Simon, who is called
- 1:45Peter.
- 1:47He is staying with a tanner named Simon,
- 1:50whose house is by the sea."
- 1:54So, Cornelius is a good man. He's a
- 1:57praying man. He's a giving man. And
- 2:00suddenly an angel is before him.
- 2:02And the angel says, "Your prayers have
- 2:05built up a memorial.
- 2:08They've been accumulating and you have
- 2:11the Lord's attention.
- 2:13And we want you to send to Joppa and ask
- 2:17for Simon Peter at the Tanner's house."
- 2:20When the angel who was speaking to him
- 2:23had left, he Cornelius summoned two of
- 2:26his servants and a devout soldier of
- 2:29those who were his personal attendants.
- 2:35When the angel who was speaking to him
- 2:37had left, he summoned two of his
- 2:39servants and a devout soldier of those
- 2:42who were his personal attendants. And
- 2:44after he had explained everything to
- 2:46them, he sent them to Joppa.
- 2:49On the next day, as they were on their
- 2:51way and approaching the city, Peter went
- 2:55up on the house top about the sixth hour
- 2:59to pray.
- 3:01But he became hungry
- 3:03and was desiring to eat.
- 3:07This is about noon.
- 3:09But while they were making preparations
- 3:12for food,
- 3:13he fell into a trance.
- 3:17And he saw the sky opened up.
- 3:23And an object like a great sheet coming
- 3:27down lowered by four corners to the
- 3:30ground.
- 3:32And there were in it all kinds of
- 3:35four-footed animals and crawling
- 3:37creatures of the earth and birds of the
- 3:39air.
- 3:41A voice came to him,
- 3:43"Get up, Peter.
- 3:45Kill and eat."
- 3:48But Peter said, "By no means, Lord.
- 3:52For I have never eaten anything unholy
- 3:55or unclean.
- 3:58Again, a voice came to him a second
- 4:01time.
- 4:02What God has cleansed, no longer
- 4:06consider unholy.
- 4:09This happened three times, and
- 4:11immediately the object was taken up into
- 4:14the sky.
- 4:16Now, while Peter was greatly perplexed
- 4:19in mind as to what the vision which he
- 4:21had seen might be, behold, the men who
- 4:25had been sent by Cornelius, having asked
- 4:27directions for Simon's house, appeared
- 4:31at the gate.
- 4:33So, we have Peter.
- 4:36He's hungry. It's about noon. He goes up
- 4:38onto the house top while they fix lunch.
- 4:41And he has this vision.
- 4:43And the vision is
- 4:45of a sheet being lowered from heaven,
- 4:49and these animals in it that you don't
- 4:51eat. Maybe crocodiles and snakes and
- 4:55creepy crawly things.
- 4:57And a voice says to him to get up, kill,
- 5:01and eat. And he says, "No.
- 5:03I won't do that because I know that's
- 5:05unclean."
- 5:07And the message is,
- 5:09don't disobey
- 5:11the voice of God when it contradicts
- 5:14your traditions.
- 5:16Because God may declare the Gentiles to
- 5:19be holy, even though in the past they've
- 5:22been unclean.
- 5:24It doesn't have anything to do with
- 5:25supper. It has to do with whether you
- 5:28will override the voice of God by
- 5:31adhering to your traditions, or whether
- 5:34you will question your traditions
- 5:36because of the voice of God that you
- 5:38have heard.
- 5:39And while he's thinking about this,
- 5:43the men from Cornelius are
- 5:46at the gate.
- 5:48And calling out, they were asking
- 5:50whether Simon, who was called Peter, was
- 5:53staying there.
- 5:55While Peter was reflecting on the
- 5:57vision, the spirit said to him, "Behold,
- 6:00three men are looking for you.
- 6:03But get up, go downstairs, and accompany
- 6:06them without misgivings, for I have sent
- 6:10them myself."
- 6:12Peter went down to the men and said,
- 6:15"Behold, I am the one you are looking
- 6:17for. What is the reason for which you
- 6:20have come?"
- 6:21They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a
- 6:24righteous and God-fearing man, well
- 6:27spoken of by the entire nation of the
- 6:29Jews, was divinely directed by a holy
- 6:32angel to send for you to come to his
- 6:36house and hear a message from you."
- 6:39So he invited them in and gave them
- 6:42lodging.
- 6:44Peter said, "Come on in.
- 6:46You can stay here the night. I'm going
- 6:48to go with you tomorrow."
- 6:50What's happening?
- 6:52God has brought salvation to the remnant
- 6:56of the Jewish people who accept Jesus as
- 6:59the Messiah.
- 7:01And these people have been baptized in
- 7:03the spirit, and it's a movement that's
- 7:05growing fast. 3,000 added in a single
- 7:09day, thousands more added all the time.
- 7:12But as yet,
- 7:14Christianity is entirely a Jewish
- 7:17religion.
- 7:19It's not even seen as a separate
- 7:20religion. It's seen as the fulfillment
- 7:25of the prophecies to the Jews, which it
- 7:27is.
- 7:28It has to be the fulfillment of the Old
- 7:31Covenant. It has to be joined in
- 7:35continuity to the promises made to
- 7:37Abraham, to Moses, to David, even all
- 7:40the way back to Noah.
- 7:42Do you understand?
- 7:43But,
- 7:46no Gentiles were allowed
- 7:48in the church.
- 7:50If you're a Jew, this is for you.
- 7:53But, if you're a Gentile, uh
- 7:56We don't go into their homes. The Jews
- 7:59would not enter a Gentile's home. They
- 8:01would not eat with them.
- 8:03They treated them like something filthy
- 8:06and unclean.
- 8:08And this was to create a separation
- 8:10between two cultures before the spirit
- 8:13was there.
- 8:14But, once the spirit has come, then God
- 8:17can change cultures
- 8:19to align with his culture, his new
- 8:21culture.
- 8:22And so, this is the first Gentile who's
- 8:25going to become a believer.
- 8:27And God needs to find someone who is
- 8:30willing to override centuries of
- 8:33tradition
- 8:34>> [clears throat]
- 8:35>> in obedience to the voice,
- 8:37the voice of God. And the voice is
- 8:40saying, "Don't call anything unholy or
- 8:44unclean that God is cleansing."
- 8:49And on the next day, he, Peter, got up
- 8:52and went with them.
- 8:54And some of the brethren from Joppa
- 8:56accompanied them. But, now all the
- 8:58brethren, all the believers, were Jews.
- 9:02And they they did not see themselves as
- 9:04non-Jewish. They saw Jesus as Jewish,
- 9:07all his apostles as Jewish.
- 9:10They saw the Christian faith as
- 9:13a Jewish understanding, a Jewish faith.
- 9:17On the following day, he entered
- 9:20Caesarea.
- 9:21Now, Cornelius was waiting for them and
- 9:24had called together his relatives and
- 9:27close friends.
- 9:29So, there's a bunch of Gentiles ready.
- 9:32When Peter entered, Cornelius met him
- 9:36and fell at his feet and worshipped him.
- 9:40But Peter raised him up saying, "Stand
- 9:43up. I too am just [clears throat] a
- 9:45man."
- 9:47As he talked with him, he entered
- 9:50and found many people assembled.
- 9:54And he said to them,
- 9:56"You yourselves know
- 9:58how unlawful it is for a man who is a
- 10:02Jew to associate with a foreigner or to
- 10:06visit with him.
- 10:08And yet
- 10:09God has shown me that I should not call
- 10:13any man unholy or unclean.
- 10:19That is why I came without even raising
- 10:22any objection when I was sent for.
- 10:26So I ask for what reason
- 10:29you have sent for me."
- 10:32He walks into the room and he says,
- 10:35"I wouldn't be here.
- 10:37I've never done this before in my life,
- 10:39nor did my fathers or grandfathers, nor
- 10:42has anyone in the whole Jewish faith
- 10:45done this. I'm doing something very
- 10:47risky,
- 10:48but I'm going to obey God. Why am I
- 10:50here?"
- 10:52Cornelius said,
- 10:55"Four days ago
- 10:57to this hour
- 10:58I was praying in my house during the
- 11:01ninth hour,
- 11:03and behold, a man stood before me
- 11:06in shining garments.
- 11:08And he said, 'Cornelius,
- 11:11your prayer
- 11:12has been heard and your alms have been
- 11:16remembered before God.
- 11:18Therefore,
- 11:20send to Joppa
- 11:22and invite Simon who is called Peter to
- 11:24come to you.
- 11:26He is staying at the house of Simon the
- 11:28Tanner by the sea.
- 11:31So I sent for you immediately,
- 11:33and you have been kind enough to come.
- 11:38Now, then,
- 11:39we are all here, present before God,
- 11:44to hear all that you have been commanded
- 11:48by the Lord.
- 11:50If that's not a good introduction, I
- 11:52don't know what is.
- 11:54We are all here, present before God,
- 11:58to hear what you have been commanded by
- 12:00the Lord.
- 12:01This is so similar
- 12:03to what Abraham said to the Lord when he
- 12:06said, "Here I am,
- 12:09Yahweh, [clears throat]
- 12:10present
- 12:11to hear."
- 12:13Now, this Gentile is stepping into the
- 12:15same faith of Abraham.
- 12:19Opening his mouth, Peter said,
- 12:22"I most certainly understand now that
- 12:26God is not one to show partiality."
- 12:30Partiality means to treat some people
- 12:32better than others.
- 12:34He's saying, "It's not God who does
- 12:35that.
- 12:37It's our traditions.
- 12:39But in every nation, the man who fears
- 12:42him and does what is right
- 12:45is welcome to him."
- 12:48So, he says, "God does not show
- 12:50partiality.
- 12:51If you do what's right and you fear him,
- 12:55he welcomes you."
- 12:58The word which he sent to the sons of
- 13:00Israel, preaching peace through Jesus
- 13:03Christ, he is Lord of all, you
- 13:06yourselves know the thing which took
- 13:09place throughout all Judea, starting
- 13:12from Galilee after the baptism which
- 13:14John proclaimed. You know of Jesus of
- 13:17Nazareth, how God anointed him with the
- 13:20Holy Spirit and with power,
- 13:23and how he went about doing good and
- 13:25healing all who were oppressed by the
- 13:28devil, for God was with him.
- 13:32We are witnesses of all the things he
- 13:34did both in the land of the Jews and in
- 13:37Jerusalem.
- 13:39They also put him to death by hanging
- 13:41him on a cross.
- 13:43God raised him on the third day and
- 13:45granted that he become visible.
- 13:49Not to all the people, but to witnesses
- 13:52who were chosen before him by God, that
- 13:55is to us who ate and drank with him
- 13:58after he arose from the dead.
- 14:01And he ordered us to preach to the
- 14:03people and solemnly testified that this
- 14:07is the one who has been appointed by God
- 14:10as judge of the living and the dead.
- 14:14Of him all the prophets bear witness.
- 14:17What is their witness? That through his
- 14:19name everyone who believes in him
- 14:23receives forgiveness of sins.
- 14:27Okay? So, Peter starts off by saying,
- 14:30"I'm not going to tell you a story
- 14:32you're not familiar with."
- 14:34He tells this Centurion, "You know about
- 14:36Jesus.
- 14:38You Nobody in this country could have
- 14:41not known what was happening.
- 14:43You know the miracles he performed. You
- 14:45know how he went about healing and
- 14:47cleansing and preaching and doing good.
- 14:51Right?
- 14:52But his point is that's not all that
- 14:54happened. They murdered him and he rose
- 14:56from the dead. And we are the witness
- 15:00that he has been appointed by God judge
- 15:03of the living and of the dead."
- 15:06And he says, "Of him all the prophets
- 15:08bear witness that through his name
- 15:11everyone who believes in him will
- 15:13receive forgiveness of sins."
- 15:16While Peter was still speaking these
- 15:19words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who
- 15:22were listening to the message.
- 15:26All the circumcised believers who came
- 15:28with Peter were amazed.
- 15:33So, we have a phenomenon.
- 15:36We have the Gentiles
- 15:39receiving
- 15:40the helper.
- 15:43The glory of God, the Holy Spirit, the
- 15:46sign of the covenant, the seal of God's
- 15:49acceptance, the Holy Spirit.
- 15:52All the circumcised, that means all the
- 15:54Jewish believers, who came with Peter
- 15:58were shocked.
- 16:00Because
- 16:02the gift of the Holy Spirit had been
- 16:06poured out on the Gentiles also,
- 16:10for they were hearing them speaking with
- 16:14tongues and exalting God.
- 16:17Then Peter answered, "Surely, no one can
- 16:21refuse the water for these to be
- 16:23baptized who have received the Holy
- 16:26Spirit just as we did, can he?" And he
- 16:30ordered them to be baptized in the name
- 16:34of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to
- 16:37stay on a few days.
- 16:41What shocked
- 16:43the Jewish believers?
- 16:48That the Gentiles received the gift of
- 16:51the Holy Spirit.
- 16:53And how did they know that they had
- 16:55received the gift of the [music] Holy
- 16:57Spirit?
- 17:01They heard them speaking in unknown
- 17:04tongues. So, Peter said, "They received
- 17:06it just as we did."
- 17:10Now, we have a pattern.
- 17:12The same thing that happened in
- 17:14Jerusalem, the same thing that happened
- 17:17in Samaria that made Simon the sorcerer
- 17:20offer money is now happening here.
- 17:23They are being overwhelmed by the Spirit
- 17:26of God and that most unruly member is
- 17:30yielding to the anointing and
- 17:33everybody's shocked. They don't call it
- 17:35the gift of tongues. It's the gift of
- 17:37the Holy Spirit. And it's the Spirit
- 17:40poured out. It's the gift of the Holy
- 17:43Spirit, the outpouring of the Holy
- 17:45Spirit. It's the new covenant [music]
- 17:48in the Spirit that God is extending to
- 17:51the Gentiles.
- 17:52But the key is
- 17:54they knew that they had received it
- 17:56because they heard [music] them speaking
- 17:58in unknown tongues.
- 18:00Now this is exactly what Jesus was
- 18:03referring to in John chapter 3. When he
- 18:06said, "Do not marvel that I say you must
- 18:08be born again, the wind, the Spirit,
- 18:11blows where it wishes. You don't know
- 18:14where it's coming from and you don't
- 18:16know where it's going." That refers to
- 18:18tongues, but you hear its sound. So it
- 18:22is with everyone who is born [music] of
- 18:25the Spirit. So here they are saying,
- 18:27"Okay, we can't argue. We know these
- 18:30people have been born of the Spirit.
- 18:33>> [music]
- 18:33>> The outpouring has come. The gift of the
- 18:36Spirit is theirs and this proves to them
- 18:39that they are now part of the covenant
- 18:42that is saved in Jesus.
- 18:46>> [music]
- 18:55[music]
