Full transcript
- 0:03Artificial intelligence.
- 0:08Artificial intelligence is the idea that
- 0:11a machine can display human levels of
- 0:13intelligence.
- 0:15For example, machines that can speak,
- 0:18think, learn, and even be emotionally
- 0:21aware.
- 0:23The ultimate challenge in AI is for
- 0:25scientists to create an equally
- 0:27intelligent being.
- 0:30All actions performed by machines are
- 0:32carefully programmed using commands and
- 0:35algorithms, mathematical equations,
- 0:38which instruct the machine how to
- 0:40respond to specific stimuli, prompts.
- 0:44Some machines are able to learn,
- 0:46but this isn't truly AI.
- 0:49It just usually means that the machine
- 0:51can retain new information that is
- 0:53presented to it, or that it can
- 0:55recognize and respond to new stimuli.
- 0:59In fact, it is so difficult create AI
- 1:02that scientists haven't even been able
- 1:04to create a robot that can hold a basic
- 1:07conversation yet.
- 1:10One application of AI is in healthcare.
- 1:14Some hospitals in the UK are trialing AI
- 1:17systems in their hospitals to ensure
- 1:19that the patients who require the most
- 1:21urgent care get it.
- 1:23The technology analyzes test results and
- 1:26assesses the risk of abnormal results.
- 1:29It then communicates directly with the
- 1:31correct specialist or doctor by
- 1:34displaying a notification on a
- 1:36smartphone.
- 1:38This technology is already saving lives
- 1:41and saving nurses up to 2 hours per day,
- 1:44meaning they can spend more time with
- 1:46the patients who need it most.
- 1:49The creator of any new technology should
- 1:52consider the impact of their new
- 1:53technology on society.
- 1:56For instance, AI could improve our lives
- 1:59and make them easier in many ways.
- 2:01However, if we manage to create machines
- 2:04with human-like intelligence and
- 2:06capabilities, we may have to worry about
- 2:09if they will ultimately take control of
- 2:11us.
