- 0:31Money in your?
- 0:32Medicare for? [screaming]
- 0:35Michigan.
- 0:36WE DID IT.
- 0:39[screaming]
- 0:40[cheering]
- 0:45[screaming]
- 0:46MY NAME
- 0:49IS ABDUL EL-SAYED.
- 0:51[cheering]
- 0:52[screaming]
- 0:57And I am so proud and honored
- 1:00to stand here as your senator elect from
- 1:02the great state of Michigan. [cheering]
- 1:09Up until right about now, you might have
- 1:11noticed I always say
- 1:13or God willing
- 1:15whenever the outcome of this race was
- 1:17mentioned.
- 1:18But today, tonight, we can turn THAT
- 1:21INTO A
- 1:27[cheering]
- 1:34[panting]
- 1:39[screaming]
- 1:40THIS
- 1:43FOR THE FOR THE RIGHT-WING OPS, THAT
- 1:45just means praise be to God.
- 1:47All right.
- 1:49This movement for money out of politics,
- 1:51money in your pocket, and Medicare for
- 1:53all, I I just want to thank you,
- 1:55everybody who knocked the door, made a
- 1:57call,
- 1:58sent a dollar,
- 2:00hosted a story,
- 2:02and most importantly,
- 2:04gave us your stake in democracy.
- 2:08You took
- 2:10you took a chance on the unlikeliest of
- 2:12candidates.
- 2:14So thank you.
- 2:15This is all yours.
- 2:22Michigan, I cannot wait to serve you
- 2:24with the same big heartedness, open
- 2:27mindedness, grit, and earnestness that
- 2:29you've shown me.
- 2:31You welcomed me to your homes,
- 2:33your churches, your synagogues, your VFW
- 2:35and Union Halls.
- 2:37You shared moments of frustration and
- 2:39sadness and vulnerability with me.
- 2:41You gave me grace and strength
- 2:44in my lowest moments.
- 2:46And the hope and inspiration that
- 2:48powered my best. I love you back.
- 2:53And I hope that I can bring it all with
- 2:55me.
- 2:57I hope I can bring it all with me to
- 2:58Washington in your service.
- 3:02[cheering]
- 3:03[screaming]
- 3:05Thank you for your trust
- 3:07and your belief
- 3:08and your kindness.
- 3:11I'm going to take it all with me. And I
- 3:13hope to bring back the kind of
- 3:14leadership that
- 3:16more than earns it.
- 3:18The last month has brought the stakes of
- 3:19this election into sharp relief.
- 3:23Ours, this beautiful movement was built
- 3:26over the past year and a half
- 3:27campaigning across Michigan's biggest
- 3:28cities and its smallest towns.
- 3:30We spoke of a brighter, a bigger, more
- 3:32hopeful Michigan.
- 3:34Theirs,
- 3:35an astro turfed, corporate funded
- 3:38advertising campaign
- 3:40built to deceive and distract.
- 3:49Rather than try to unite us to contend
- 3:51with the crisis of gas or groceries, the
- 3:54opposition decided to try to divide us.
- 3:57At first,
- 3:59they pointed to my name and my faith as
- 4:01if to say, you know,
- 4:02he's a little different.
- 4:05And when it didn't work,
- 4:06they tried to guilt me by association.
- 4:09And when that didn't work, they went all
- 4:11in on one of the ugliest campaigns we've
- 4:13seen in our lifetimes.
- 4:20They might have been pointing to my name
- 4:22and my faith, but we all know that my
- 4:24name and my faith aren't the reason you
- 4:25can't afford your gas.
- 4:27Not the reason you can't afford your
- 4:29groceries.
- 4:30Not the reason you can't see a doctor.
- 4:33Now, as I was campaigning, some of you
- 4:35would come up and ask me,
- 4:39how come you don't hit back?
- 4:41How come you don't call them racist or
- 4:43hateful?
- 4:45Because here's the thing, I didn't run
- 4:47for myself.
- 4:48And in truth,
- 4:50they weren't targeting me.
- 4:52They were just
- 4:53weren't just attacking me.
- 4:55They were targeting and attacking
- 4:58you.
- 5:00They were targeting and attacking the
- 5:01very idea
- 5:03of America.
- 5:05See, they hate the idea of an America
- 5:07big enough for anyone who looks a little
- 5:09different or prays a little different or
- 5:11whose family comes from a different part
- 5:12of the world.
- 5:14That
- 5:15includes me, but it also includes anyone
- 5:18and everyone who doesn't look like them,
- 5:20pray like them, love like them, or isn't
- 5:22rich like them.
- 5:24So they turn this race into a simple
- 5:25choice.
- 5:27They want an America that is too small
- 5:29for some of us. We know
- 5:30that America is big enough for all of
- 5:32us.
- 5:34Big enough.
- 5:36[cheering]
- 5:37We're big enough to take on the crises
- 5:39that we face. Day by day, Trump's
- 5:41insults became uglier and coarser. But I
- 5:44got to spend those days with you
- 5:46learning about your struggles, your
- 5:48hopes, and the things that inspire you.
- 5:51A mom of two kids with a genetic lung
- 5:54disease in East Jordan fighting the
- 5:55system to make sure her kids don't lose
- 5:57the meds that they rely on to stay
- 5:59alive.
- 6:01Her hope,
- 6:02that they don't have to struggle with
- 6:03health insurance like she has.
- 6:05A grandma on the East side fighting to
- 6:07make sure that the violence that took
- 6:08her son doesn't take her grandson too.
- 6:11Her hope?
- 6:13In America where boys get to grow up.
- 6:16I met Josh, the UAW auto worker fighting
- 6:19the corporate bosses who hadn't raised
- 6:21their wages in two decades
- 6:23despite billions in profit.
- 6:25And they won that fight.
- 6:27His hope?
- 6:28In America where every single worker
- 6:31gets the right to a union.
- 6:37I met a small business owner fighting to
- 6:39make sure that a another heart attack
- 6:41doesn't take food off the table for his
- 6:4330 employees or their families.
- 6:45His hope?
- 6:46That his workers don't have to worry
- 6:48about how they'll feed their families.
- 6:51See, I didn't get into this to defend
- 6:52myself. No, I got into it because their
- 6:54fights are my fight and their hopes are
- 6:56all of our hopes.
- 6:58We don't do this work for ourselves. We
- 7:00do this work for each other.
- 7:02To defend us all from another
- 7:03generation's youth, treasure, and
- 7:05opportunity squandered at the altar of
- 7:08endless war.
- 7:10To defend us all from corporate
- 7:11oligarchs who bought and sold our
- 7:13government to rig the system against us.
- 7:15To defend us all from a healthcare
- 7:17system more interested in monetizing our
- 7:19illness than healing our bodies and
- 7:21minds.
- 7:22To defend us all from air too putrid to
- 7:25breathe and water
- 7:28too putrid to drink.
- 7:30To defend us all from losing our voting
- 7:31or our reproductive or our human rights.
- 7:34See, I
- 7:35I ran.
- 7:36[cheering]
- 7:38To defend us all from politicians who
- 7:40want to divide us rather than movements
- 7:42that work to dignify us.
- 7:44Across our primary and general election
- 7:46campaigns, they spent over get this $350
- 7:50million trying to beat us.
- 7:54That is a record here in Michigan. $70
- 7:57million alone in the primary funded by
- 7:59all the same cats who funded the general
- 8:01election and that's a record anywhere in
- 8:04this country.
- 8:06But
- 8:08y'all, Michigan, we built something
- 8:10bigger than a bank account.
- 8:12We built a movement.
- 8:15Government of the people, by the people,
- 8:17and for the people. [cheering]
- 8:19We showed that in a battle between the
- 8:21money and the many, that the many really
- 8:23can win.
- 8:27And so to all the kids who watched this
- 8:30last month, to all the parents who
- 8:32struggled to explain why the president
- 8:33openly mocks someone for their name or
- 8:35how they pray,
- 8:37let them know tomorrow
- 8:39that the bad guys lost.
- 8:42[cheering]
- 8:47Let them know
- 8:48[screaming]
- 8:53I want you to let them know.
- 8:55Let them know that we together fighting
- 8:57for something bigger, we won.
- 9:01[cheering]
- 9:02So Mike,
- 9:03enjoy your retirement.
- 9:06[screaming]
- 9:08I know you got a house in Florida and
- 9:09two yachts.
- 9:12[cheering]
- 9:12See, you chose hate
- 9:14and Michigan chose hope.
- 9:19May we never have to see the likes of
- 9:21you in this state again.
- 9:23[cheering]
- 9:26JD
- 9:34There is this delicious irony
- 9:37in the fact that you're constitutionally
- 9:39obligated to swear me in in January.
- 9:48[cheering]
- 9:49So you know what that means?
- 9:52Wolverine one, Buckeye zero. [screaming]
- 9:56[cheering]
- 10:01Donald,
- 10:03look, I I know you you struggled with my
- 10:05name.
- 10:06So after JD swears me in in January, you
- 10:09could just go on and call me Senator.
- 10:11[screaming]
- 10:11[cheering]
- 10:16To the super packs and special interests
- 10:18who tried to beat us, we are coming for
- 10:20your system of politics.
- 10:23To AIPAC
- 10:24[cheering] who spent $42 million against
- 10:26us, thank you for giving me the
- 10:28opportunity to beat you twice.
- 10:34And I want to say something here. See,
- 10:36they try to call you hateful
- 10:38if you believe that Palestinian kids
- 10:41should get to grow up in the land of
- 10:42their forefathers
- 10:44without [cheering] being murdered by our
- 10:46tax dollars.
- 10:48[screaming]
- 10:49If you believe in equal rights to peace,
- 10:52dignity, and self-determination, that's
- 10:54not hate. It's love.
- 10:56[cheering]
- 10:58Michiganders, we want our taxes spent
- 11:00here for schools here and healthcare
- 11:02here and infrastructure here.
- 11:05We don't want our money sent to do
- 11:06apartheid or GENOCIDE OR WAR.
- 11:12[cheering] MICHIGANDERS believe in
- 11:13Michigan and I believe in Michiganders,
- 11:16and I am so honored that Michiganders
- 11:18believed in me. See, you you took a bet
- 11:20on the least likely of candidates. I'm
- 11:22not a politician. I'm a doctor with an
- 11:2411-letter first name.
- 11:27They told us they told us when I when I
- 11:29when I started this campaign, there was
- 11:30no way to beat the money. They told us
- 11:33that someone with a name and my story,
- 11:36a Muslim, was unelectable.
- 11:39Let alone in a statewide Senate race in
- 11:42Michigan.
- 11:43They told us that old-fashioned politics
- 11:46was dead, that traveling the state to
- 11:48have real conversations with real people
- 11:49in real places was a fool's errand. They
- 11:51told us that the establishment was too
- 11:53strong, that DC was going to dictate who
- 11:56won and who lost, that Washington and
- 11:58its special interests didn't want us.
- 12:00They told us that when all the votes had
- 12:01been counted on August 4th and then
- 12:03again on November 3rd, it would have
