- 2:35[music] From ABC News World Headquarters
- 2:37in New York, this is World News Tonight
- 2:41with David Mure.
- 2:43>> Good evening. It's great to have you
- 2:44with us here at a very [music] busy
- 2:45Thursday night. We begin tonight here
- 2:46with this category 2 hurricane tonight
- 2:48closing in on the Gulf Coast with winds
- 2:51right now up to 100 mph already rapidly
- 2:54intensifying over the very warm waters
- 2:56of the Gulf tonight. The new track just
- 2:58in the storm expected to be a cat 2 as
- 3:00it nears landfall in the Pensacola,
- 3:02Florida area sometime tomorrow night.
- 3:05Already tonight, storeshelves empty as
- 3:07families along the coast stock up on
- 3:09supplies. Many oil and natural gas rigs
- 3:11in the Gulf have now been evacuated
- 3:13tonight. More than 60% of the oil rigs
- 3:15in the Gulf shut down, putting even more
- 3:18pressure on gas prices across this
- 3:20country. Hurricane hunters tonight
- 3:21flying right into the eye of the storm
- 3:23as it gained strength a few hundred
- 3:25miles from shore. Millions tonight
- 3:27bracing for a storm surge of up to 7
- 3:29feet up to 15 inches of rain. Power
- 3:31outages as well. Lee Goldberg has the
- 3:33new track and Stephanie Ramos leading us
- 3:35off from the storm zone tonight.
- 3:37Tonight, millions bracing for Isaas. Now
- 3:40a powerful category 2 hurricane
- 3:43evacuating families jamming highways
- 3:46shelves strips and concern over oil rigs
- 3:49in East's path that could impact gas
- 3:51prices. The governors of Alabama,
- 3:54Georgia, and Florida already declaring
- 3:56states of emergency, warning of long
- 3:59duration power outages. Klay Hobbs is
- 4:01coordinating emergency response in
- 4:03Pensacola. He has 50 ambulances and 120
- 4:07personnel standing by.
- 4:09>> There comes a time though during the
- 4:11storm where your teams aren't able to
- 4:13reach those that need help.
- 4:14>> We are not able to respond once the
- 4:16sustained winds reach over 40 mph. So
- 4:19when someone needs help or they decided
- 4:21they want to evacuate, it's really too
- 4:23late.
- 4:24>> Isaas could bring up to 7 ft of storm
- 4:26surge. The people that live here know
- 4:28hurricanes and they're taking this one
- 4:30seriously. Shelves are empty and gas
- 4:33stations are running dry. Outside Buxy,
- 4:36Mississippi, our Leslie Lopez found Chad
- 4:38Lewis filling sandbags for people who
- 4:41can't do it themselves.
- 4:42>> This is our community. This is what we
- 4:44do. This is what the coast is. After
- 4:45Katrina, we all got together and this is
- 4:47what you get when storms come. And
- 4:50tonight, with gas prices already on the
- 4:52rise in the US and diesel at nearrecord
- 4:55highs, the storm forcing major oil
- 4:57companies to evacuate rigs, producers
- 5:00halting nearly 2thirds of all oil
- 5:02production in the Gulf and more than
- 5:04half of gas production, which could send
- 5:06gas and fuel prices even higher. And
- 5:09David, here in Pensacola, the wind has
- 5:11certainly kicked up. You can see just
- 5:13how choppy the waves are behind me. As
- 5:16Isaias closes in, landfall is expected
- 5:18near Pensacola Friday night. But the
- 5:20impacts will extend across much of the
- 5:23coast as families are bracing here and
- 5:25all the way west to Louisiana. David,
- 5:27>> yeah, it's going to be much uglier this
- 5:29time tomorrow night. We're thinking
- 5:30about the millions in the path and of
- 5:31course you too and the crew. Stay safe,
- 5:33Steph. Thank you. Let's get right to
- 5:34senior meteorologist Lee Goldberg. Lee,
- 5:36we know this is expected to be a Cat 2
- 5:38hurricane right before it hits, but you
- 5:40were saying the big question tonight is
- 5:41whether there's any wind shear that
- 5:43could help knock it down right before it
- 5:45hits.
- 5:47That would be best case, David. At the
- 5:49very least, it'll stop it from rapidly
- 5:52intensifying before landfall. We've seen
- 5:53so many storms like that in recent years
- 5:55that do that. This will not happen with
- 5:57East Aai. We've seen an eye almost try
- 5:59to form this afternoon. A definite sign
- 6:00of strengthening. Winds of 100 miles an
- 6:02hour. It's a cat 2. It could peak over
- 6:04the next maybe 12 18 hours tomorrow
- 6:06morning as a strong cat 2 making
- 6:08landfalls either a cat 2 or a strong cat
- 6:10one tomorrow evening Pensacola to maybe
- 6:12Deston Florida the worst weather on that
- 6:14right side with the surge the hurricane
- 6:17warnings from Beluxy over to Panama City
- 6:18but I want you to notice how far inland
- 6:20the tropical storm watches go up to
- 6:22Birmingham so gusty winds there and
- 6:24worry about inland flooding as well as
- 6:25we time it out conditions going downhill
- 6:27fast tomorrow the worst late day evening
- 6:30and into tomorrow night big winds flash
- 6:31flooding it'll be remembered for tornado
- 6:33tornadoes too, especially the panhandle
- 6:34into Florida. The storm surge could be 5
- 6:36to 7 ft, especially from Pensacola to
- 6:39Panama City. If it does go to the right
- 6:40of Mobile Bay, that's better for that
- 6:42bay. Flood watches inland as we go into
- 6:44the weekend. Up to a half foot of rain
- 6:46along the track and even two to four
- 6:48inches into the Carolinas. Preparation
- 6:50needs to be done by tonight, David.
- 6:51>> All right. Well, let's hope for that
- 6:52wind shear, but either way, this is
- 6:54going to be a powerful category, a one
- 6:56or two hurricane when it hits. So, Lee,
- 6:58thank you. We'll be tracking with you
- 6:59right back here tomorrow night. In the
- 7:01meantime, the other news this Thursday
- 7:02night, this evening, Defense Secretary
- 7:04Pete Hgsithth on the deck of the USS
- 7:06Lincoln revealing his plan late today to
- 7:08publicly execute the Fort Hood shooter
- 7:10by firing squad. Hegs in a pre-recorded
- 7:13interview said the public will be able
- 7:15to watch. The Defense Department
- 7:17official confirming to ABC News tonight
- 7:18that they plan to live stream this
- 7:20execution. Trevor Alp on board the USS
- 7:23Lincoln
- 7:25>> tonight as sailors aboard the USS
- 7:27Abraham Lincoln return home from their
- 7:29record- setting deployment. Secretary
- 7:31Pete Hegsth making new headlines just a
- 7:34short time ago while talking about Fort
- 7:36Hood shooter Nadal Hassan. Hegs saying
- 7:38the killer will face execution by firing
- 7:41squad and now says he will make sure
- 7:43that people can watch it that it will be
- 7:45done publicly. And tonight a defense
- 7:47official confirms the execution will be
- 7:50livereamed. prompted during an interview
- 7:52with a conservative news outlet on the
- 7:54deck of the Lincoln late yesterday.
- 7:56Hegsth said this,
- 7:57>> Major Hassan, this news that came down
- 7:59regarding firing squad. Can you tell us
- 8:02about how that came about and and what
- 8:04led to that decision process?
- 8:06>> Nob brainer execution by firing squad.
- 8:09Army major betrays his country, radical
- 8:11Islamist, kills a bunch of Americans at
- 8:13Fort Hood. Of course, we're going to do
- 8:14it at Fort Hood. Going to do it on a
- 8:16Thursday. We're going to do it at 1:00,
- 8:17which is when he did it. and it's going
- 8:19to be soldiers with rifles executing the
- 8:21firing squad,
- 8:22>> he says, saying the public will be able
- 8:24to watch.
- 8:25>> We'll make sure that people are able to
- 8:26to watch it, that it's public, uh,
- 8:28because people need to understand that
- 8:31this is a there's serious consequences
- 8:33for these types of things.
- 8:34>> The shooters attorney tonight saying
- 8:35he's pledge for a public execution is
- 8:38political theater, calling his comments
- 8:40irresponsible.
- 8:42Now David, if this execution takes place
- 8:44in December and HGth says it will, it
- 8:46would be the first public execution in
- 8:48the US in some 90 years. And that
- 8:51defense official tells ABC News it will
- 8:53be live streamed. David,
- 8:55>> Trevor Al with us live tonight. Trevor,
- 8:56thank you. Meanwhile, here in New York
- 8:58City, there's been an ICE shooting in
- 8:59Manhattan. The man raced to the
- 9:01hospital. Let's get right to our chief
- 9:02investigative correspondent, Eric
- 9:03Aturski. Erin, what have you learned so
- 9:05far?
- 9:07>> ICE agents shot someone in a vehicle up
- 9:09near 225th Street. David and and
- 9:12eyewitnesses said they heard several
- 9:14shots. They also said they saw a child
- 9:16in the car at the time. The person
- 9:18struck was taken to the hospital with
- 9:20non-lifethreatening injuries. It appears
- 9:23the ICE agents were looking someone with
- 9:24a prior conviction and a prior arrest.
- 9:27But all this comes as sources tell ABC
- 9:29News David that ICE has increased its
- 9:32targeted number of arrests from 2,000 a
- 9:35day up to 3,000 a day. David. All right,
- 9:37Erin, stay with us here because in
- 9:39federal court today here in New York
- 9:40City, former Venezuelan President
- 9:41Nicholas Maduro and his wife now charged
- 9:44with torturing Americans. Tonight, here
- 9:46the horrific descriptions from
- 9:48prosecutors. Aaron was in court for us.
- 9:52Nearly a year after US forces swept into
- 9:54Venezuela in a nighttime raid, capturing
- 9:57President Nicholas Maduro and his wife
- 9:58Celia Flores, whisking them to New York.
- 10:00Tonight, federal prosecutors announcing
- 10:02new charges accusing the couple of
- 10:04torture of their own people. and at
- 10:06least three Americans.
- 10:08>> Maduro, Flores, and other Venezuelan
- 10:10leaders tried to silence political
- 10:13opposition through murder and threats to
- 10:16murder victims families, electric shock,
- 10:20espixiation,
- 10:22starvation,
- 10:23so-called punishment cells, beatings,
- 10:26and rape. In graphic detail, prosecutors
- 10:29allege one American was subjected to
- 10:31torture that included electric shock to
- 10:33his arms, legs, and genitals and
- 10:35esphyxiation after he was falsely
- 10:37accused of conspiring to assassinate
- 10:39Maduro. Another American was visiting
- 10:41family when prosecutors say Venezuelan
- 10:43officers attacked him from behind and
- 10:45later electrocuted his testicles. That
- 10:47man allegedly told he was only alive
- 10:49because he was a US citizen and could be
- 10:51useful in a prisoner exchange. A third
- 10:54American allegedly suffered permanent
- 10:55injury to his eye. For two days, they
- 10:57beat him with their fist to the face,
- 10:59head, and stomach approximately every
- 11:02half hour.
- 11:02>> So, let's bring back in Aaron Kurski
- 11:04with us here tonight. And Aaron, what
- 11:05have we learned about those Americans
- 11:06who were allegedly tortured? Where are
- 11:08they now?
- 11:10>> They've all been released, David,
- 11:11including one who was let go just days
- 11:13after Maduro's ouster by the US
- 11:16military. And tonight, David, Maduro's
- 11:18lawyer tells us the former president
- 11:20denies all the new charges. David Aaron
- 11:22Kurski on both fronts tonight. Aaron, we
- 11:24appreciate it. Tonight, the six-year-old
- 11:25who brought a gun to school and shot his
- 11:27first grade teacher in the chest. And
- 11:29now the audio. What the six-year-old
- 11:31says to the officers moments after the
- 11:33shooting. And it's alarming. Here's Will
- 11:36Reef.
- 11:38>> Tonight, the chilling police video just
- 11:40released from inside a Virginia
- 11:42classroom. And the words of a
- 11:44six-year-old boy who had just shot his
- 11:47teacher, saying he doesn't care if he
- 11:49goes to jail. piece of me.
- 11:52>> He said this just minutes after he shot
- 11:54and wounded his first grade teacher,
- 11:56Aby's Werner, with a gun he said he
- 11:58stole from his mother.
- 12:00>> Where is the weapon?
- 12:01>> It's on the floor.
- 12:02>> It's over there.
- 12:03>> As another teacher restrains the boy on
- 12:05her lap, he screams at officers.
- 12:08>> I don't care if you call back up. I
- 12:09don't care if I go to jail.
- 12:11>> We know you know that language and you
- 12:13know that's not appropriate.
- 12:14>> The shooting occurred in Newport News,
- 12:16Virginia in 2023. The boy's mother
- 12:19pleaded guilty to child neglect. And
- 12:22David, the boy's teacher was shot in the
- 12:24hand and chest, and her attorneys say
- 12:26that she still has a fragment of a
- 12:27bullet inside her body and will be
- 12:29dealing with her injuries for life.
- 12:31David
- 12:32>> Will Reeve reporting. Thank you, Will.
- 12:33Tonight, we turn to that botched
- 12:35execution in Tennessee. The inmate,
- 12:36Christa Pike, waking up and asking the
- 12:38people around her, "Where am I and who
- 12:41are you?" And tonight, she's now walking
- 12:43with help. So, what comes next in this
- 12:45case? Here's Morgan Norwood.
- 12:48More than a week after her failed
- 12:49execution, tonight, Tennessee death row
- 12:52inmate Christa Pike now up and walking
- 12:54around her hospital room. According to
- 12:56her attorney,
- 12:57>> she was walking with assistance. These
- 12:59are just a few steps. We're not talking
- 13:01about certainly not running a marathon
- 13:03by any stretch of the imagination,
- 13:05>> but adding she remains mentally foggy.
- 13:07>> It's that sort of starting a sentence
- 13:10and losing track of where she was going.
- 13:12It's not that she's unaware, but that
- 13:15she doesn't hold the thought very
- 13:17easily.
- 13:17>> The convicted killer surviving two
- 13:19lethal injections. Lawyers saying prison
- 13:21staff used at least seven needles to try
- 13:23and gain access to her arms.
- 13:25>> She's experiencing the pain of those
- 13:28burns and pain in any effort to to use
- 13:31her her arms and hands.
- 13:34>> Her lawyers say doctors thought she was
- 13:35brain dead and were preparing to take
- 13:37her off life support earlier this week
- 13:39when she regained consciousness. Her
- 13:41attorneys are now asking Tennessee's
- 13:43governor to commute her sentence to
- 13:45life.
- 13:46>> And David, corrections officials say
- 13:47they followed the state's protocol for
- 13:48executions. It's now up to the Tennessee
- 13:50State Supreme Court to decide whether to
- 13:53issue a new order to execute Christa
- 13:55Pike. David
- 13:56>> Morgan Norwood reporting. Thank you,
- 13:57Morgan. Tonight, the chaotic scene
- 13:59inside the federal courthouse in
- 14:00Nashville. Police say a man walked in
- 14:02with a pistol. When it didn't fire, he
- 14:04pulled out a knife. The suspect was shot
- 14:06and killed by a US marshal. No one else
- 14:08was injured. Authorities believe the
- 14:10suspect was from out of state. We move
- 14:12on tonight to allegations against the US
- 14:14ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Gilfoil,
- 14:16who was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr.
- 14:18and close to the Trump family. Tonight,
- 14:20what a former Trump donor now accuses
- 14:22her of. Here's Jay O'Brien.
- 14:25She was one of President Trump's most
- 14:27visible supporters, once engaged to his
- 14:29son Don Jr. and rewarded for her loyalty
- 14:32with a plum assignment, ambassador to
- 14:34Greece. This was Kimberly Gilfoil at the
- 14:362020 convention. The best is yet to
- 14:41come.
- 14:42>> But tonight, Ambassador Gilfoil now
- 14:44accused of trying to sell access to top
- 14:46Trump administration officials. The Wall
- 14:49Street Journal reporting that days
- 14:50before her confirmation hearing, Gilfoil
- 14:52urged a Trump donor to pay off her
- 14:55$100,000 credit card bill, texting,
- 14:57"Honey, please, I need you to get this
- 14:59done for me today." We spoke with that
- 15:02donor, Eric Deeders. She told me that
- 15:05she needed $100,000 to pay off an
- 15:08American Express card and if she didn't,
- 15:12she wasn't going to pass her Senate
- 15:13confirmation.
- 15:14>> Did you think that she was asking for
- 15:17that payment in exchange for something?
- 15:20>> Oh, absolutely. She was so desperate for
- 15:23me to send that $100,000. She said, "If
- 15:26you do this for me," and it's in the
- 15:27text messages, "I will be your ride or
- 15:31die in Trump world."
- 15:33>> Deer says he ultimately didn't make the
- 15:35payment because he didn't have the
- 15:36money. Gilfoil, her attorney, and the
- 15:38State Department did not respond to
- 15:40multiple requests for comment from ABC
- 15:42News.
- 15:44The story breaking the same day
- 15:46Secretary of State Marco Rubio was
- 15:48visiting Greece, greeted by Gilfoil with
- 15:50a hug on the tarmac. The two sitting
- 15:52side by side at official events. But
- 15:55Rubio repeatedly refusing to answer
- 15:57questions about the allegations.
- 15:58>> I'm not going to comment on a story that
- 16:00literally posted a few hours ago. It's
- 16:02just not going to work that way and it
- 16:03most certainly is not going to work that
- 16:04way when I'm sitting in another country.
- 16:06>> Again, David, we've reached out
- 16:08repeatedly to Ambassador Gilfoil, her
- 16:09lawyer, and the US embassy in Greece and
- 16:11we have not heard back. Secretary Rubio
- 16:14saying the embassy is doing a quote
- 16:15great job. He called Gilfoil a strong
- 16:18ambassador. David
- 16:19>> Jay O'Brien in Washington. Thank you,
- 16:21Jay. We turn now to the war in Ukraine
- 16:22tonight. Russia launching a deadly
- 16:24barrage targeting civilians. In fact, a
- 16:26glide bomb landing next to two packed
- 16:28buses and exploding. Let's get right to
- 16:30our chief foreign correspondent Ian
- 16:32Panel tonight. Ian.
- 16:33>> Yeah, David. I think even by the
- 16:35standards of this war. This was a
- 16:37devastating attack by Russia. A glide
- 16:39bomb exploding next to two pack buses in
- 16:42eastern Ukraine. At least 30 people
- 16:44killed, 20 wounded. Rescuers there
- 16:47pouring through the debris. In the past
- 16:4948 hours alone, more than 60 innocent
- 16:52Ukrainians have been killed in mounting
- 16:54Kremlin attacks. And unable to advance
- 16:57on the front lines, Russia's now ramping

- 17:01capital Kev and other cities. President
- 17:04Zalinski vowing revenge for this and
- 17:06pleading with the US for more defensive
- 17:08missiles. David,
- 17:10>> horrific images from Ukraine tonight.
- 17:12Ian, thank you. Tonight in France,

- 17:16nationwide demonstrations. Look at this.
- 17:19In Paris tonight, police in riot gear
- 17:20using tear gas and water cannons.
- 17:23Students storming them with steel. More
- 17:24than 6,000 arrests so far. When we come
- 17:28back here tonight, the dramatic images.
- 17:29Look at this. A plane overshooting the
- 17:31runway, actually crashing down the side
- 17:34of that cliff right there. Also, the
- 17:35startling moment tonight that Selene
- 17:37Dion falls on stage. We do have word on
- 17:40how she's doing tonight. Look at this
- 17:42grandmother breaking her own record,

- 17:46how long? You're not going to believe
- 17:47this. We couldn't. And tonight, the four

- 18:55broke her wrist. We're just a bunch of
- 18:57slackers here. A graceful recovery
- 18:59tonight for Selene Dion. She fell on
- 19:00stage during a concert in Paris last
- 19:02night, but look at this. She quickly
