- 2:32News Tonight with David Muir.
- 2:35Good evening and it's great to have you with us
- 2:36here on a Monday night.
- 2:37We do begin tonight with the breaking news, the
- 2:39storms in the northeast.
- 2:40We have learned tonight they have now turned deadly.
- 2:42Trees down on cars, buses, trains, drivers
- 2:45trapped, the storms from Philadelphia up through
- 2:47New York and Massachusetts, and then the horrific fires tonight.
- 2:51Look at this, the emergency unfolding.
- 2:52These are catastrophic fires in and around Spokane, Washington.
- 2:56Tens of thousands escaping as flames move in, hundreds of
- 3:00homes burning to the ground, firefighters working
- 3:03around the clock.
- 3:04We have it all covered tonight, beginning with ABC's
- 3:07Alex Stone in the Fire Zone.
- 3:09Tonight, families fleeing walls of flames, homes engulfed as
- 3:13multiple wildfires converge around Washington state's
- 3:18second largest city.
- 3:21A Spokane firefighter's body camera showing what
- 3:24they were up against as the three fast-moving
- 3:27>> The wildfires broke out Saturday.
- 3:29Hand-to-hand combat with the roaring
- 3:32flames. Some 67,000 people in Spokane County forced to
- 3:36flee on a moment's notice.
- 3:37Paige Klein's brother grabbing their dog.
- 3:40This was a view out of their car window.
- 3:43More than 700 homes and businesses confirmed destroyed,
- 3:46but authorities fear the number could be far higher.
- 3:50I've been to a lot of places around the world,
- 3:52and I can tell you today that that's a war zone.
- 3:55When the flames came racing through here, it sheared off the
- 3:58water lines into these homes.
- 3:59Now, two nights later, still water is pouring out
- 4:02of most of these homes.
- 4:04It's complete devastation.
- 4:06We love this house.
- 4:07We raised our kids here,
- 4:09and everything is gone.
- 4:11John and Kathy Sherrick were out of town when the
- 4:13fires destroyed their house.
- 4:15This is all that's left.
- 4:16I just feel hurt.
- 4:18I feel lost.
- 4:19Every every memory of my children are down there.
- 4:21Every memory of my grandchildren are down there.
- 4:23It's just right now I just feel empty.
- 4:27David, tonight, these are those scenes families
- 4:29are returning home to.
- 4:30Firefighters say they're getting a bit of a break in
- 4:32the weather until Thursday when the heat and wind return.
- 4:35David, let's hope that break really helps them.
- 4:37Thank you.
- 4:37Alex Stone live from Spokane.
- 4:38We're thinking about all those families.
- 4:40And as I mentioned off the top tonight, the storms sweeping
- 4:42through the northeast today have also turned deadly.
- 4:45Drivers trapped in flash flooding trees down
- 4:48on cars, buses, trains.
- 4:49A woman has been killed in Massachusetts.
- 4:52And here's Gio Benitez.
- 4:54Tonight, drivers stalled in high water as another soaking
- 4:57storm wreaks travel havoc from Philly to New York to Boston.
- 5:01In Newark, New Jersey, drivers that risked the deep water
- 5:04stalled out as tractor trailers made waves all around them.
- 5:07Others pushed their dead cars out of the water as crews
- 5:11worked to clear storm drains.
- 5:13Blocked drains brought muddy floods to neighborhoods near
- 5:16Springfield, Massachusetts, too.
- 5:18In Connecticut, water gushing over the gas station's retaining
- 5:21wall, flooding the entire area.
- 5:23The torrential rain was enough to bring down multiple trees
- 5:26around New York's five boroughs, this one crushing a car.
- 5:29I thought it was just thunder.
- 5:31Outside Boston, in Plymouth, authorities say a woman sitting
- 5:34on her porch was killed when a gust of wind took
- 5:37down this massive tree.
- 5:39One person was hurt after a tree fell on this commuter
- 5:41train on New York's Long Island, and a tree came down
- 5:44on a Greyhound bus on I-95 in Westport,
- 5:47Connecticut, thankfully only a few minor injuries.
- 5:52And David, right now at Newark here, flights have been
- 5:54delayed by about two hours, 900 flight cancellations
- 5:57across the country, but it is looking better tomorrow, David.
- 6:00Gio Benitez with us here tonight, Gio, thanks as
- 6:03always. Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist
- 6:05Ginger Zee, also with us here tonight.
- 6:07Hi, Ginger.
- 6:08Hi David, you know, three and a half plus inches of
- 6:10rain broke a daily record in Hartford, Connecticut,
- 6:12but now the white caps on the Hudson tell you
- 6:14we have cleared and the wind has picked up.
- 6:16Let's talk about a place that
- 6:18would love to have some of that rain and that
- 6:20is the Northern Rockies, back to the Pacific Northwest.
- 6:23Air quality alerts are what I want your eye to go to,
- 6:25Seattle and Portland included in this, because
- 6:28tomorrow as the winds shift, Some of these big populations
- 6:31are going to be seeing the smoke from these fires.
- 6:33Idaho covered in what could be unhealthy.
- 6:35Check airnow.gov before you head out.
- 6:37And yes, that heat will be building
- 6:40into the 90s for a place like Portland until Friday.
- 6:43Ginger Zee, we'll see you first thing in the
- 6:44morning. Thanks, Ginger.
- 6:46Tonight, the deadly shooting at a fast food restaurant.
- 6:48Three people killed, seven wounded.
- 6:50And tonight here, the dramatic video showing
- 6:52armed bystanders opening fire, trying to get the gunmen to
- 6:55stop in Twin Falls, Idaho.
- 6:57Trevor Ault is there tonight.
- 7:00Tonight, investigators are searching for the motive
- 7:02in this Idaho mass shooting.
- 7:04What's happening?
- 7:04What happened?
- 7:05What's happening?
- 7:06Shoot it.
- 7:06Shoot it.
- 7:07Three people killed, seven injured,
- 7:09outside an In-N-Out restaurant in this crowded shopping center.
- 7:12Get out of here.
- 7:13Get out of here.
- 7:14Police have identified the suspect
- 7:15as 24-year-old Chad Williams, seen here dressed in black,
- 7:18armed with a long gun.
- 7:20"Report multiple people down."
- 7:23Hundreds of people running for cover as the shots rang out,
- 7:26but investigators say two men, an off-duty state trooper
- 7:29and this man, 35-year-old Jordan Salinas, fired back.
- 7:33"I peeked around the right-hand side of that
- 7:36sign closest to the road, And that's where I saw the
- 7:40individual with his rifle
- 7:43pointed at the vehicles.
- 7:44Authorities believe those heroic actions
- 7:47drove the shooter from the scene and likely saved lives.
- 7:50He seemed unusually comfortable aiming
- 7:52that rifle at those cars.
- 7:54And then as soon as some rounds started coming at him,
- 7:57everything changed.
- 7:59Immediately, all that bravado he had immediately crumbled.
- 8:05This In-N-Out had opened just a week prior.
- 8:07The company says one of their workers was killed
- 8:10while caring for customers.
- 8:11Christopher Claunch was also killed.
- 8:13His sister telling the New York Times he'd worked at
- 8:15a recovery center helping people with addiction.
- 8:18His partner said he loved traveling, cooking,
- 8:20and the outdoors.
- 8:21We also spoke to Linsey Tangy, who found several of
- 8:24the victims at the scene.
- 8:26This is just not our community.
- 8:28Like, none of us expected this.
- 8:31And David, that hero civilian Jordan told me along with him,
- 8:34there were dozens of people who jumped in to help with
- 8:36first aid and all of that action very likely saved lives.
- 8:40All right, Trevor, I know you'll have much more from
- 8:42that hero tomorrow on GMA.
- 8:43Thank you.
- 8:44In the meantime, we turn next tonight to the battle over the
- 8:46reflecting pool in the nation's capital.
- 8:48U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's decision to drop charges, saying
- 8:52it was a botched installation, not vandalism.
- 8:55Tonight, President Trump lashing out.
- 8:56And here's Mary Bruce.
- 8:59Tonight President Trump slamming his close ally, U.S.
- 9:02Attorney Jeanine Pirro, for dropping
- 9:04her case against former Olympian David Hearn, who was charged
- 9:07with vandalizing the newly renovated reflecting pool.
- 9:11Pirro concluding the damage was caused not by vandalism,
- 9:14but by a botched installation.
- 9:16Really disappointed with Jeanine Pirro.
- 9:18She folded like an umbrella.
- 9:22Just days after Trump spent $15 million in taxpayer money
- 9:26to paint the reflecting pool American flag blue, the paint
- 9:31started peeling, chunks floating up to the surface.
- 9:35Trump providing no evidence blamed vandals and soon after
- 9:39authorities arresting Hearn, who was riding his bike and
- 9:42stopped to check out the damage, dipping his hand in the water.
- 9:46Hearn willfully destroyed property.
- 9:49At the time, Pirro accused Hearn of deliberately
- 9:52pulling up the paint.
- 9:53Did he have any tools or was it just his bare hands?
- 9:57Right now, we believe it's his bare hands, both hands.
- 9:59Does that indicate in your belief that it was probably
- 10:02damaged before or do you believe that he...
- 10:04Oh, he damaged it.
- 10:05...further, but do you believe it had already
- 10:07been damaged before?
- 10:08He damaged the pool.
- 10:10But Friday, Pirro dropped the charges,
- 10:12acknowledging documents from the Department of the Interior
- 10:15indicate the damage to the pool was the result of a botched
- 10:19installation and not vandalism.
- 10:21Pirro blaming the contractor.
- 10:23I'm not saying I was 100% thrilled with the contractor,
- 10:28but the contractor was rushing.
- 10:30We wanted to get it open for July 4th, and we got it done.
- 10:34But in addition, there was vandalism.
- 10:38Tonight, David Hearn's lawyer calling the case against him
- 10:42an abuse of government power.
- 10:44And David, tonight, Jeanine Pirro spotted here at the
- 10:46White House, as sources say the president has mused about
- 10:49whether to fire her.
- 10:51Meanwhile, Trump's Attorney General nominee, Todd Blanch,
- 10:54is now on track to be confirmed after giving in to the
- 10:57demands of two key Republican senators and putting in writing
- 11:00his pledge to kill the $1.8 billion taxpayer fund to pay
- 11:04out Trump's political allies, including January 6th rioters.
- 11:09Mary Bruce, live at the White House.
- 11:11Mary, thank you.
- 11:11Tonight, the U.S.
- 11:12war and Iran.
- 11:13President Trump again calling off what he says was going
- 11:16to be a massive attack against Iran saying Iran called
- 11:19him and said, please don't attack, we'll make a deal.
- 11:22Tonight, Iran denying any talks with the U.S.
- 11:25Here's John Karl.
- 11:27After claiming he had just called off what would have been
- 11:30the largest military attack since World War II, President
- 11:34Trump said today he was giving Iran one more chance to make
- 11:38a deal.
- 11:39I want to give him every last chance before decapitation.
- 11:42Trump insists he called off the attack because
- 11:45Iran's leaders asked him to.
- 11:47They called me and they said, please don't
- 11:50attack, we'll make a deal.
- 11:52That's the real truth, and everyone knows it.
- 11:55It's at least the seventh time Trump has threatened
- 11:58a major new attack, only to call it off, claiming
- 12:01progress on peace talks.
- 12:03Tonight, Iran flatly denied any negotiations with
- 12:07the U.S.
- 12:08were underway.
- 12:09Still, Trump insists there will soon be an agreement to
- 12:12reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
- 12:13We're talking about the Strait, the opening of the Strait,
- 12:17having it open literally by tomorrow, completely open.
- 12:21The president is well aware that gas prices have jumped to
- 12:24more than $4 a gallon, up $1.13
- 12:30The president said the Strait of Hormuz will be fully
- 12:33reopened as soon as tomorrow.
- 12:35It's unclear how that would happen, but he insisted he
- 12:38would agree to no arrangement that allows the Iranians
- 12:42to charge a toll.
- 12:43David? John Karl tonight, John.
- 12:45John, as you know, as this war plays out here in the U.S.
- 12:47tonight, the urgent question, who is targeting multiple
- 12:50cities and their water plants?
- 12:52The number of cyber attacks now growing.
- 12:54So let's get right to our chief investigative correspondent,
- 12:56Aaron Katersky, with us tonight.
- 12:57Aaron, what have you learned?
- 13:00Well, tonight, David, those cyber attacks against critical
- 13:02infrastructure in this country are spreading.
- 13:05Sources tell ABC News that federal officials
- 13:08are now concerned water and wastewater utilities
- 13:12in at least a dozen states may have been compromised.
- 13:16So far there have been no widespread disruptions.
- 13:18One of the affected states, Michigan, saying tonight there
- 13:22are no known impacts that pose to public health concern.
- 13:25But David, the fear is Iran is showing its
- 13:28capacity to retaliate as President Trump threatens
- 13:31a possible escalation of the war.
- 13:33All right, Aaron and the team will stay on this.
- 13:35Thanks, Aaron.
- 13:36Tonight, the continuing concern over this intestinal
- 13:38illness across the country.
- 13:39And now the first two deaths have been reported.
- 13:42More than 18,000 cases in 45 states now.
- 13:46Elizabeth Schulze is back with us.
- 13:47Elizabeth, what do we know?
- 13:49David, the ongoing record outbreak of that
- 13:51parasitic stomach illness has now turned deadly.
- 13:54Officials in Michigan reporting two deaths.
- 13:57In both cases, the patients had significant underlying
- 14:00health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis
- 14:04and dehydration.
- 14:05Nationwide, more than 18,000 people have gotten
- 14:08sick in 45 states.
- 14:10The FDA linking cases in Michigan and
- 14:12eight other states to iceberg lettuce sourced by Taylor Farms
- 14:17in Central Mexico, then served at Taco Bell.
- 14:19The companies voluntarily recalled that
- 14:22lettuce. This illness is not typically deadly.
- 14:24Officials are still investigating any other
- 14:27sources of food that may have been contaminated.
- 14:30Elizabeth, thank you.
- 14:31Tonight, the Ohio congressman under fire, Max Miller, accused
- 14:34of abusing his ex-wife and their two-year-old daughter.
- 14:37He denies it.
- 14:38But tonight, his former father-in-law,
- 14:40Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, speaking out.
- 14:42Here's Jay O'Brien.

- 14:54to serve, accusing Miller of increasingly erratic and
- 14:57dangerous behavior and insisting he needs serious
- 15:00psychological help.
- 15:02The congressman was married to the senator's daughter, Emily,
- 15:05who claims she was a victim of spousal abuse.
- 15:08Miller says that's just not true.
- 15:10I categorically deny abusing my former wife.
- 15:13In a February police report obtained by ABC News, the
- 15:16congressman's ex-wife claims he threw her against the wall,
- 15:20once held a gun to her head, and another time threw hot water
- 15:23on her.
- 15:24Miller says she's lying.
- 15:26As proof, he said his ex-wife offered to cook
- 15:28him dinner several days after one of the alleged
- 15:32Ask yourself, if I had assaulted her, would she have offered
- 15:37to cook me dinner six days The congressman's ex-wife
- 15:41also told authorities he may have abused their
- 15:43two-year-old daughter, claiming that after one visit
- 15:46with Miller, the child came home with a fractured collarbone.
- 15:49"I have never abused our daughter."
- 15:52Miller says his daughter was hurt by employees
- 15:55at her daycare.
- 15:56The local Department of Children
- 15:58and Family Services did not find evidence to
- 15:59substantiate allegations
- 16:07And David Miller was a close aide to President Trump.
- 16:13Today the president calling him a good person, saying
- 16:16these are accusations.
- 16:17Meantime, Republicans are anxious.
- 16:19Unless Miller drops out by this week, his name will be
- 16:22on the ballot in November.
- 16:24David? We turn to Colorado now, Jay.

- 16:33Neely's accused of shooting Rajon Belt-Stubblefield after
