A2 English Listening Practice - Using Subtitles — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Let's talk about using subtitles when
- 0:02you're learning English. So, you can
- 0:06probably already notice that this video
- 0:09has subtitles. This isn't something that
- 0:13I have been doing recently. I've been
- 0:16making videos without subtitles, but I'm
- 0:20going to start creating videos with
- 0:24subtitles um that are AI generated. So,
- 0:29I pay to have this tool that can do this
- 0:32for me. So, it might not be 100% correct
- 0:38all the time, but uh I'm hoping it will
- 0:41be like 97 98% correct, 99% perhaps. So,
- 0:49uh I uh hope that you like this. I'm
- 0:52going to talk about why I'm doing this
- 0:55and I want to talk about using subtitles
- 0:59in general. Okay. So, first of all, why
- 1:03am I doing this? Why am I starting to
- 1:06make videos with subtitles again? Well,
- 1:11first of all, many people ask for
- 1:13subtitles and yes, there is the YouTube
- 1:17generated the automatic uh subtitles uh
- 1:22from YouTube. Um but for some reason, a
- 1:25lot of people just don't like this or
- 1:28they don't want to click on the little
- 1:30button uh and choose the language and
- 1:33all of that. So, uh, a lot of people,
- 1:37uh, don't like that or they just don't
- 1:40trust YouTube autogenerated subtitles.
- 1:44Um, honestly, they're pretty good. So,
- 1:48uh, you can try them out on other videos
- 1:51that don't have subtitles and, uh, you
- 1:54can see for yourself. I find that
- 1:56they're pretty good. Uh, but many people
- 2:00prefer to have the subtitles on the
- 2:03screen and so uh that's why I'm doing
- 2:08this. Uh, you know, people have
- 2:11expressed that they really like the long
- 2:15videos that I've done for the past I
- 2:19don't know how long it's been, but I've
- 2:21been doing them for a while. Um, and
- 2:24these are the videos that uh people get
- 2:28more excited about because they can see
- 2:31my face. Uh, people like seeing me for
- 2:35some reason and uh they get more views
- 2:39when I first publish them. But really,
- 2:43the videos that I've made that have
- 2:47helped the most people, it seems, are my
- 2:52videos with subtitles dedicated to
- 2:56different levels, like A1, A2, B1. Those
- 3:01listening videos, they still get tons
- 3:05and tons of views. Not all of them, but
- 3:09uh the older ones still generate uh many
- 3:13views over the months and years. Uh some
- 3:18of them have in the millions actually,
- 3:22not many of them, but a few of them. So,
- 3:25uh those seem to be the videos that
- 3:29really uh help the most people. Uh even
- 3:34though some people they don't need the
- 3:38subtitles
- 3:40uh they don't want uh the subtitles uh
- 3:44the thing is if you don't want the
- 3:47subtitles you can simply ignore them. Uh
- 3:51that's uh something that's possible even
- 3:54though you think that uh having them on
- 3:58the screen distracts you. Maybe that
- 4:02might be true for some of you. Uh, but I
- 4:06can't please everyone. There will always
- 4:09be some people that aren't completely
- 4:13satisfied with the choices I make in
- 4:17terms of how I make my videos. Um, but I
- 4:21figured that I should start using these
- 4:25subtitles so that uh all the people that
- 4:29need subtitles can have them. And
- 4:33hopefully the people that don't want
- 4:35them can simply cover them up, put
- 4:39something there to cover them, uh, or
- 4:42just not look at them. Uh, that's
- 4:45probably the easiest thing uh, to do.
- 4:48And uh I've watched videos where I put
- 4:51the subtitles on, but I don't look at
- 4:54them unless I need them, unless I don't
- 4:58understand something. It's possible,
- 5:01folks. So, uh hopefully this will be the
- 5:05best solution for uh my videos in the
- 5:10future to reach more people, help more
- 5:13people, and uh hopefully you guys still
- 5:18uh enjoy these types of videos. I think
- 5:21I'm going to make them a little shorter.
- 5:24Uh possibly 15 minutes or so. And I
- 5:29don't know what I'll talk about yet. Uh
- 5:32maybe uh mostly language learning stuff,
- 5:35possibly some other things. Um but
- 5:39regardless of the topic, the goal is
- 5:42still to provide interesting content for
- 5:45you to practice your listening. And I'm
- 5:49showing my face so you can see me.
- 5:52People really like this format. So, uh,
- 5:56I'm going to continue to do it like
- 5:59this. I think I could change obviously,
- 6:02but uh, I'll probably, uh, make videos
- 6:06like this one. And let me know if you
- 6:10like this type of uh subtitling where it
- 6:15kind of shows you which word I'm saying
- 6:18in the moment. Um I think most people
- 6:21like that.
- 6:23it kind of helps them uh follow along
- 6:26better. But um I'm sure uh with the tool
- 6:30I'm using, there might be options uh
- 6:33where it doesn't do that where it just
- 6:36shows the words and it doesn't show you
- 6:39where I am in the phrase or whatever.
- 6:42So, let me know. Uh leave a comment down
- 6:45below and tell me what you think about
- 6:48these subtitles. And I'm sure some of
- 6:51you will comment and say you don't like
- 6:54having subtitles on the video. I'm
- 6:57sorry. Again, I can't please everyone.
- 7:00Um, I would just say that you can try to
- 7:04cover them or not look at them. I've
- 7:06done this plenty of times. It's
- 7:08possible. So, uh, how should you use
- 7:12subtitles when learning English?
- 7:16Well, uh, let me talk in general, not
- 7:18just about my content, but in general.
- 7:22Uh, first of all, a great way to do this
- 7:25is to repeat the video multiple times.
- 7:30Um, the way that I've, uh, talked about
- 7:33the most, I think, is watching the video
- 7:37the first time without the subtitles to
- 7:41see how much you can understand. And
- 7:44then you watch the second time with the
- 7:46subtitles so you can see uh which words
- 7:50you didn't get. Uh and then the third
- 7:52time without subtitles to try to
- 7:56understand everything this time without
- 7:59reading them. So, uh you can do it that
- 8:02way or perhaps you just listen or watch
- 8:06twice. Uh the first time with the
- 8:09subtitles just to try to get everything
- 8:13and then the second time without
- 8:15subtitles to try to get everything
- 8:18without seeing the words. So, uh you can
- 8:22do this in a number of ways, but the
- 8:25goal is to uh eventually understand the
- 8:28video without the subtitles. Okay? So,
- 8:33with a video like this one, uh you would
- 8:37watch it maybe not looking at the
- 8:40subtitles, just looking at my face, and
- 8:44then the second time looking at the
- 8:46subtitles, and the third time looking at
- 8:48my face again. or cover the subtitles if
- 8:52you prefer. Um, you can do it that way.
- 8:56If there's a video that uh doesn't have
- 9:00subtitles on YouTube, you can uh use the
- 9:05YouTube autogenerated subtitles. They
- 9:09work. Uh I I use them. Uh so uh you can
- 9:13watch uh without the subtitles and then
- 9:16activate those subtitles and then uh
- 9:20turn them off again however you want.
- 9:23But uh using repetition is a good way to
- 9:27practice your listening and see what you
- 9:30can understand, what was hard for you to
- 9:34understand, and then eventually
- 9:36understand everything without the
- 9:39subtitles. So, uh that's uh one tip.
- 9:43Another tip is uh that you can just look
- 9:47at the subtitles when you can't
- 9:50understand a word. I like this uh tip
- 9:54here. like you can watch this video and
- 9:57just look at my face and when I say
- 10:01something that's not completely clear uh
- 10:04to you or maybe there's a phrase or a
- 10:07word I use that you're not familiar
- 10:10with, then you look down and you see
- 10:13what it is that I said. And that's a
- 10:16great way to use them. And uh it's
- 10:20pretty simple and it helps you train
- 10:23without subtitles, but then use the
- 10:26subtitles to help you uh get what you
- 10:30couldn't understand or um see u the new
- 10:35word that I used, etc. Right? That's a
- 10:38great way to use them. Uh you can also
- 10:41use subtitles for I guess I'll call it
- 10:46targeted listening practice. So uh you
- 10:50notice which patterns you can't
- 10:53understand. Let me explain this. If you
- 10:56can understand something when it's
- 10:59written down, but you can't understand
- 11:02it when you just hear it without seeing
- 11:05it, that means that uh you know the word
- 11:09or you know the phrase, but you can't
- 11:12understand it. Well, it's not a new
- 11:14phrase for you, but you can't understand
- 11:18it. Um, this means that you have a good
- 11:21opportunity to see what the difference
- 11:25is between what you're expecting to hear
- 11:29and how native speakers actually say the
- 11:32phrase. Okay? So when you use subtitles,
- 11:37uh for example, you can watch without
- 11:40looking at the subtitles and then you
- 11:44can't understand something and then you
- 11:46look down and you say, "Huh, why
- 11:48couldn't I understand that? I know that
- 11:50phrase." Um, and then you repeat, you
- 11:54rewind the video and you train with that
- 12:00uh phrase. you uh listen multiple times
- 12:03to see how a native speaker actually
- 12:07says that phrase. So, you're targeting
- 12:11the things that you can't understand and
- 12:14then seeing why you couldn't understand
- 12:17it, what you were expecting to hear, and
- 12:20then you see how it really sounds. So
- 12:25that can help you notice and better
- 12:28understand different patterns in
- 12:31English. So that's something uh that
- 12:34could be useful for you. You can do the
- 12:37same thing for pronunciation practice.
- 12:40So, uh, when that happens, you can, uh,
- 12:44like I said, rewind the video, um, watch
- 12:47it again, listen, uh, multiple times to
- 12:50hear how a native speaker says it, and
- 12:53then you can replicate that with your
- 12:56own, uh, you know, saying it yourself.
- 12:59So, you practice your listening and your
- 13:03pronunciation. In that way, you are uh
- 13:07noticing how things really sound and
- 13:10then you try to say it the way that
- 13:13native speakers say it. So, this can be
- 13:16good for listening and pronunciation.
- 13:20And then lastly, you can use subtitles
- 13:23when you're just watching content for
- 13:26pleasure. Let's say it's the end of the
- 13:29day. You want to watch uh something for
- 13:32entertainment and instead of watching
- 13:35the show in your own language or the
- 13:38video in your own language, you watch it
- 13:40in English. And uh this can be hard, but
- 13:45if you put the subtitles on, you can uh
- 13:49understand it much better probably. And
- 13:52during this time, if you're just
- 13:54watching something for pleasure after a
- 13:58long day of work, then you probably just
- 14:01want to watch it and not rewind it and
- 14:05take all these notes and things like
- 14:07that. You just watch the content, but
- 14:10you have the subtitles on and um you're
- 14:15practicing in that way. um you probably
- 14:18won't understand everything, but the
- 14:21subtitles will make it easier for you to
- 14:24just enjoy uh that show, that video or
- 14:29whatever. And so in that case, uh
- 14:33there's nothing you should really do.
- 14:35You should just relax and enjoy it. but
- 14:38you're getting some English practice and
- 14:41because of the subtitles, you might be
- 14:44able to understand enough to just enjoy
- 14:47the show or enjoy the video or whatever
- 14:50it is. So, that's another thing that you
- 14:53can do. All right, I hope that you liked
- 14:57this format of video with the subtitles.
- 15:00Um, leave a comment down below and let
- 15:03me know if this style of subtitles uh is
- 15:06good or whatever. I don't know exactly
- 15:09uh what I'm going to be doing and
- 15:13talking about. And I assume, like I
- 15:16said, I'll just make videos that are
- 15:18like this, a little shorter than I've
- 15:21been making them recently, but with
- 15:23subtitles. Um, and uh I don't know what
- 15:27I'll title these videos. maybe
- 15:29intermediate uh English listening
- 15:31practice or I don't know. Um but we'll
- 15:35see. I just wanted to make a video
- 15:37talking about subtitles to introduce
- 15:40this new era of videos that I hope to
- 15:44make and to give you some tips. And of
- 15:47course, as always, remember to check out
- 15:49my advanced podcast episodes in which I
- 15:52speak fast. And check out my US
- 15:56Conversations podcast in which I talk to
- 15:58different people from around the
- 16:00country. It's a lot of fun and it's
- 16:03great practice for you because you
- 16:05practice with my authentic conversations
- 16:08that I have with other native speakers.
- 16:11So, both of those links are down below.
- 16:14All right, thank you for watching this
- 16:15video and I'll talk to you in the next
