  1. 0:00all right well welcome everyone to the
  2. 0:03first talk in our Tuesday scholar Olly
  3. 0:05talks series it's been renamed slightly
  4. 0:08I am Judy Woodward the history
  5. 0:11coordinator of the Ramsey County Library
  6. 0:13and I am absolutely delighted to see all
  7. 0:16of you and I am absolutely delighted to
  8. 0:19welcome our first speaker today Coleen
  9. 0:22Rowley before I turned the podium over
  10. 0:25to Colleen I want to give a special
  11. 0:28shout out and a thanks here to a loyal
  12. 0:31audience member named Bill Dannette and
  13. 0:33would you stand up please bill and the
  14. 0:36reason that I want to do this is because
  15. 0:38two years ago bill came to me and said
  16. 0:42you know who would make a really good
  17. 0:44speaker that FBI lady from 9/11 and I
  18. 0:50thought boy is that a good suggestion
  19. 0:52and I must say that miss Rowley was not
  20. 0:55an easy person to track down so it took
  21. 0:57me a couple of years to find her but I
  22. 1:00did and so we are so delighted for those
  23. 1:03of you who may not remember Coleen
  24. 1:06Rowley was an FBI agent at the time of
  25. 1:099/11 and she was the original and most
  26. 1:12famous Minnesota whistleblower connected
  27. 1:16to 9/11 ever so we are really honored to
  28. 1:19have her her appearance is made possible
  29. 1:22in addition to the suggestion of mr.
  30. 1:25Dannette her appearance is made possible
  31. 1:28through Minnesota's Arts and Cultural
  32. 1:31Heritage Fund which provides financial
  33. 1:34backing for this series and of course we
  34. 1:37must acknowledge the huge contribution
  35. 1:39of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
  36. 1:42of the University of Minnesota
  37. 1:45allye our partners in this series as in
  38. 1:48so many others so thank you all very
  39. 1:51much
  40. 1:52and now I'll turn the microphone over to
  41. 1:54Coleen Rowley thank you
  42. 2:03well this is amazing and I hope that the
  43. 2:07people that are standing and it's worth
  44. 2:09it on your legs this whole time it's
  45. 2:12it's a very sad moment of course 17
  46. 2:16years after the horrible tragic attack
  47. 2:20on 9/11 round 3,000 people died and we
  48. 2:25all remember you know it was so
  49. 2:26traumatic everybody was glued to their
  50. 2:28televisions for a period of time and I
  51. 2:32got to know some of the victims of the
  52. 2:35of the attack some of the widows that
  53. 2:37their husbands died and they became some
  54. 2:40of the strongest advocates for truth
  55. 2:43after 9/11 one of the things that
  56. 2:47motivated me and I ended up testifying
  57. 2:50to the Senate Judiciary because I was
  58. 2:52kind of forced to explain especially to
  59. 2:55the FBI why the heck did you write a
  60. 2:57memo about this eight and a half months
  61. 2:59after 9/11 why did you put any of this
  62. 3:02in writing and so I was actually under a
  63. 3:05certain amount of pressure just to
  64. 3:07explain why the truth was important
  65. 3:10people you know when you're in these
  66. 3:12official high ranking rungs of things in
  67. 3:16your you're involved in it and you've
  68. 3:19made mistakes that people have died as a
  69. 3:22result there's almost inevitably almost
  70. 3:25never inevitably going to be a cover-up
  71. 3:27and I have found only a couple of
  72. 3:30occasions in officialdom
  73. 3:32where there really some truth did come
  74. 3:34out and that was the Challenger and the
  75. 3:36Columbia when those happened because
  76. 3:39there were some generals with integrity
  77. 3:41and Sally Ride the astronaut whatever
  78. 3:44and they did form a commission type
  79. 3:47thing there's there's official reports
  80. 3:49of both the Columbia and the Challenger
  81. 3:50and I think a lot of the truth came out
  82. 3:53they they they admitted that they could
  83. 3:55have maybe even saved the astronauts on
  84. 3:59the on the challenger if they had tried
  85. 4:03harder etc so but that was that's really
  86. 4:06the exception because as far as I know
  87. 4:09in almost all other cases what happened
  88. 4:12when even when negligent mistakes are
  89. 4:15made
  90. 4:16not even deliberate but certainly if
  91. 4:18there's recklessness whatever and
  92. 4:20there's there's a lot of problems that
  93. 4:22have led up to something
  94. 4:23everyone is reluctant to say what they
  95. 4:27did and in a case where it's widespread
  96. 4:29where there's a blame to go around
  97. 4:32because there's a lot of different
  98. 4:34people and entities that's even worse
  99. 4:36because everybody thinks well I'll if I
  100. 4:39say what I did you know then then if I
  101. 4:42point to somebody else and say well they
  102. 4:44made the mistake then they'll point at
  103. 4:46somebody else and the whole house of
  104. 4:48cards will come down so it's you know
  105. 4:51it's not necessarily what you would call
  106. 4:54a conspiracy but it's just human
  107. 4:58tendency not to really not to really for
  108. 5:03human beings not to tell the full truth
  109. 5:05after something terrible has happened
  110. 5:07and then there's also what I write about
  111. 5:10up here which is the the Pearl Harbor
  112. 5:13problem and when you have people that
  113. 5:16have been wishing for something bad to
  114. 5:20happen and that was the case there were
  115. 5:22some foreign policy officials and
  116. 5:26retirees who had been writing for a long
  117. 5:27time if we just get our new Pearl Harbor
  118. 5:31in the country then we'll be more able
  119. 5:35you know able to be in my opinion to be
  120. 5:38manipulated etc we can boost the
  121. 5:41Pentagon we can go to war on Iraq and
  122. 5:44Iran and we can do all those things we
  123. 5:46wanted to do and so and I and I will
  124. 5:50just mention Rahm Emmanuel if there's a
  125. 5:53book out called Shock Doctrine has
  126. 5:54anyone read that book by Naomi Klein
  127. 5:56that's what it is it's it's the Shock
  128. 5:59Doctrine it's a famous book now and
  129. 6:02basically if you look at how change
  130. 6:05occurs in many many cases it's because
  131. 6:08there's a tremendous shock and trauma
  132. 6:10and that then allows the the leaders
  133. 6:13so-called leaders than to do what they
  134. 6:16want to do it's called Shock Doctrine
  135. 6:19and Rahm Emmanuel who was a chief of
  136. 6:24staff for Clinton he
  137. 6:25said don't let any catastrophe go to
  138. 6:29waste that's what his comment was any
  139. 6:32catastrophe go to waste we will make use
  140. 6:35of it in a very coarse opportunistic way
  141. 6:39yes okay it might you close to and to
  142. 6:52this oh okay okay
  143. 7:06I think can people hear my voice so well
  144. 7:10enough okay okay thank you so going back
  145. 7:16to this is a sad moment and I almost
  146. 7:18want to have a moment of silence here
  147. 7:20but then probably people would start
  148. 7:22talking again because it it's we were 17
  149. 7:25years later and frankly not very much
  150. 7:28has changed except in if anything if
  151. 7:31we've got it's gotten worse we've gotten
  152. 7:33into a more and more risk to national
  153. 7:36security terrorism has grown
  154. 7:39exponentially and even the violence the
  155. 7:43level of mass shootings and and a lot of
  156. 7:45our domestic problems are related to
  157. 7:47this war if you look at somebody asked
  158. 7:50me a question before we started they
  159. 7:52said didn't bin Laden want to provoke
  160. 7:55the United States into doing stupid
  161. 7:57things and getting their spending their
  162. 7:59debt up to 21 trillion dollars wasn't
  163. 8:02that the plan all along and absolutely
  164. 8:05that was the plan that was the plan of
  165. 8:07the terrorist leader to try to make the
  166. 8:10United States very make dumb dumb
  167. 8:13decisions out of fear and not being able
  168. 8:15to think and it seemed to it succeed
  169. 8:18because now fundamentalist extremism is
  170. 8:21actually far far greater than it ever
  171. 8:23was on 9/11 so everything we're doing
  172. 8:26and part of the reason for that is this
  173. 8:28this top line here a poor man's war is
  174. 8:30terrorism while a rich man's terrorism
  175. 8:33is war that's a quote that I often use
  176. 8:36because if you are a weaker side
  177. 8:39what you want to do is use
  178. 8:41unconventional means of warfare exactly
  179. 8:45what the United States George Washington
  180. 8:48did in fighting the much more powerful
  181. 8:51British he used a form of guerrilla
  182. 8:53warfare which we now call terrorism
  183. 8:56our founding our founding fathers you
  184. 8:59know that the Revolutionary War was was
  185. 9:02waged that way because we were less
  186. 9:04powerful and what that does is that then
  187. 9:07provokes the powerful side to use more
  188. 9:11more force on their side and then the
  189. 9:14other side and it just ratchets it up
  190. 9:17that's what it does
  191. 9:18war is not the answer to terrorism and
  192. 9:21yet that was what was suggested after
  193. 9:239/11 I testified to first my memo was
  194. 9:28written to the Joint Intelligence
  195. 9:29Committee inquiry and as a part of that
  196. 9:32and then to the Senate then I testified
  197. 9:35two weeks later to the Senate Judiciary
  198. 9:36Committee and finally to the
  199. 9:39investigators of the Department of
  200. 9:41Justice's Inspector General the problem
  201. 9:44and I was not the only one there were
  202. 9:46other quite a number of and especially
  203. 9:49here in Minnesota good honest FBI agents
  204. 9:55NSA NSA executives even who told the
  205. 10:00truth what they knew the the parts that
  206. 10:03they knew they told the truth and they
  207. 10:05became whistleblowers there were there
  208. 10:07were four NSA whistleblowers because
  209. 10:10they had turned on warrantless
  210. 10:11monitoring illegally on American
  211. 10:14citizens after 9/11 and there were at
  212. 10:16least four and sa whistleblowers the
  213. 10:19problem is we all did this we all went
  214. 10:21through the channels and we all
  215. 10:22testified and it was all more or less
  216. 10:24buried and after that took a long time
  217. 10:27like this DOJ Inspector General report
  218. 10:29took over two years to come out and so
  219. 10:33this is also a way when the truth is
  220. 10:35delayed and in over a two or
  221. 10:37two-and-a-half year period the 9/11
  222. 10:39Commission was the same way that took
  223. 10:41about two and a half years for that
  224. 10:43eventually to come out and so when
  225. 10:45that's delayed what happened in the
  226. 10:47meantime well within the next day after
  227. 10:519/11
  228. 10:52we know this from books of people that
  229. 10:54were there in the room Richard Clarke
  230. 10:56and and the other Paul O'Neill is it
  231. 11:00Paul O'Neill
  232. 11:00I think O'Neill was his last name at
  233. 11:02least he was a Treasury secretary they
  234. 11:05were right in the room and so Bush and
  235. 11:07the Bush administration within a day
  236. 11:10start saying okay now we can start war
  237. 11:13on Iraq and the the so they started the
  238. 11:17war on Afghanistan first but then
  239. 11:19immediately started doing the war on or
  240. 11:22shilling for and concocting false
  241. 11:26intelligence etc for the war on Iraq and
  242. 11:29the and all of those were started long
  243. 11:33before the reports came out now here's
  244. 11:36the here's one of the major things Iran
  245. 11:39there's a federal case then there's a
  246. 11:41federal judge that blamed Iran for 9/11
  247. 11:45did it just do people know this there is
  248. 11:48an official court case of course the
  249. 11:50family the victims families are like
  250. 11:53aghast Iran had nothing to do people got
  251. 11:56him confused Iraq and Iran what's the
  252. 11:58difference you know but Iran is a Shiite
  253. 12:02country but the terrorists were Sunni
  254. 12:05Wahhabi fundamentalists mostly
  255. 12:08associated with Saudi Arabia and other a
  256. 12:11Wahhabi areas Iran is really considered
  257. 12:15their enemy in a way they're the Shiites
  258. 12:18and they're a little more liberal
  259. 12:19there's different you know versions of
  260. 12:21all of these things but the they had
  261. 12:24nothing to do with 9/11 and yet we have
  262. 12:27a federal court case that blamed and
  263. 12:29actually they attached assets of Iran in
  264. 12:34this country for purposes of an of 9/11
  265. 12:37so they lost some assets from that
  266. 12:39additionally besides that on the eve of
  267. 12:42the of the attack our excuse me the
  268. 12:46invasion of Iraq March of 2003 fast
  269. 12:50forward after all those months of you
  270. 12:53know colon Powell holding up vials and
  271. 12:56you know chemical weapons and and Dick
  272. 12:59Cheney saying that that Iraqi
  273. 13:02intelligence had met with Mohammed Atta
  274. 13:05was the kind of the ringleader of the
  275. 13:07al-qaeda terrorists so he all these lies
  276. 13:10that were going on for months and months
  277. 13:11so you get to the eve of of the Iraq war
  278. 13:15and guess what 70% of the American
  279. 13:19people were led to believe that Iraq was
  280. 13:23behind 9/11 Iraq was behind same thing
  281. 13:27Iraq was mostly Shiite country Saddam
  282. 13:29Hussein was actually an enemy of these
  283. 13:32Mohave fundamentalist Saudi connected
  284. 13:35people that attacked us al Qaeda it's
  285. 13:38it's it's incredible so you see how this
  286. 13:40works with being able to manipulate
  287. 13:42people due to fear it was pretty amazing
  288. 13:45and that that those numbers of people
  289. 13:47that believed that 9/11 was caused as a
  290. 13:51result of Iraq and didn't know anything
  291. 13:54about Saudi Arabia's involvement etc
  292. 13:56that didn't go down real quickly there
  293. 13:59were after the the news the you know
  294. 14:04after after we actually started the war
  295. 14:07on Iraq and then they couldn't find
  296. 14:09chemical weapons of mass destruction
  297. 14:11then Tim Russert and other major media
  298. 14:14people were called on the carpet the
  299. 14:16head of New York Times Bill Keller was
  300. 14:18called on is like what word you get all
  301. 14:20this all this stuff you are publishing
  302. 14:22on Iraq and and and they said you know
  303. 14:25be and then they made up well it sounded
  304. 14:28like that I mean they they all had their
  305. 14:30excuses but they mislead the people to
  306. 14:33believe in 70% of the people believed
  307. 14:34Iraq was behind 9/11 so that this kind
  308. 14:38of thing the truth really matters you
  309. 14:41know even if we were to have launched an
  310. 14:44actual global war on terror which I
  311. 14:46don't think was the right approach in in
  312. 14:49the FBI what's the right approach if
  313. 14:51someone commits a violent act
  314. 14:52well it's considered a crime and so you
  315. 14:56know they're they're even even the war
  316. 14:58crimes in the Nazi era and stuff that
  317. 15:01was considered a crime and they went and
  318. 15:04tried to find these war criminals and
  319. 15:06then they tried them in court and stuff
  320. 15:08so we didn't do that we just said no
  321. 15:11we're not we're not gonna treat 9/11 as
  322. 15:13a crime and I argued this several
  323. 15:15several times with different people part
  324. 15:18of the administration
  325. 15:19because I you know they said no we're
  326. 15:21gonna go to war but even then they went
  327. 15:23to war with the wrong countries it's
  328. 15:26it's it's pretty
  329. 15:28I mean it's devastatingly unbelievably
  330. 15:31bad and our news is is not really even
  331. 15:34to this day told us too much the other
  332. 15:36thing that happened besides the fact
  333. 15:38that they began to immediately plan this
  334. 15:41long term war and wars that would
  335. 15:45successively take out countries
  336. 15:47beginning with Afghanistan then Iraq
  337. 15:50Somalia Yemen Syria there was six or
  338. 15:55seven of them and then the last one was
  339. 15:58Iran and we so far that's kind of where
  340. 16:00we've stopped but we're right on the
  341. 16:02edge now a finally a starting war on
  342. 16:06Iran so that's that was this whole plan
  343. 16:09but besides that the office of legal
  344. 16:12counsel had a couple of very key
  345. 16:14attorneys most people know the one named
  346. 16:17John you people know him because he's
  347. 16:20associated with the torture memo it was
  348. 16:23actually more than one memo he began to
  349. 16:25write memos right after 9/11 but he had
  350. 16:28a co-author and his co-author was Robert
  351. 16:30Delahunty yes yes and and see what it
  352. 16:35was as john you was with a newer guy and
  353. 16:38kind of they pair it up because robert
  354. 16:41Dillahunty was senior and so I don't
  355. 16:44think Robert Delahunty they're very
  356. 16:45close by the way John you and Robert
  357. 16:47Delahunty to this day co-author books
  358. 16:50about what Scott I won't say by the way
  359. 16:52this isn't this is not conservative
  360. 16:54I am also conservative on the
  361. 16:57Constitution but this in my opinion is a
  362. 16:59radical it's called the imperial
  363. 17:02presidency or war presidency powers and
  364. 17:05in the old days during the Civil War and
  365. 17:08in other wars it was called martial law
  366. 17:11that means that the president in a time
  367. 17:14of war that gets to ignore the
  368. 17:18Constitution and one of the very first
  369. 17:20memos that John you and Robert Delahunty
  370. 17:22write wrote my colleague Kerr could look
  371. 17:25it up if anyone's interested I should
  372. 17:28just mention my colleague was a defense
  373. 17:30attorney Jag at Guantanamo
  374. 17:33and so he's like the expert on all of
  375. 17:35this law stuff but the the during the
  376. 17:41Civil War Abraham Lincoln did the same
  377. 17:44thing and they you know they threw
  378. 17:46editors there was no freedom of press if
  379. 17:48you were an editor criticizing the the
  380. 17:51Abraham Lincoln's army and stuff they
  381. 17:54could they generals were allowed to put
  382. 17:56you in jail for writing op-eds saying
  383. 17:58this was wrong even people that were
  384. 18:01writing family members across the line
  385. 18:03were were put in jail and stuff so what
  386. 18:07happens they could seize property a lot
  387. 18:10of things that cannot happen in a time
  388. 18:14without without war are allowed to
  389. 18:17happen when you're at war and we many
  390. 18:21legal scholars kind of thought that was
  391. 18:23in the past they didn't think that those
  392. 18:25would be brought out again because they
  393. 18:26lead to all kinds of problems and even
  394. 18:28some of Lincoln's usurping some of these
  395. 18:31powers was later that the Supreme Court
  396. 18:34later kind of rebuked it all and so it
  397. 18:38was kind of believed that this would
  398. 18:39never happen again but immediately after
  399. 18:419/11 there's there are memos that john
  400. 18:43yoo writes that say we no longer will
  401. 18:46necessarily have our First Amendment
  402. 18:48rights and we will no longer maybe have
  403. 18:51our Fourth Amendment protection against
  404. 18:54unreasonable search and seizure well
  405. 18:56within a few days after 9/11 they turned
  406. 18:59on those the NSA turned on those buttons
  407. 19:01where they were monitoring everybody so
  408. 19:03that was illegal unless you say we're in
  409. 19:06a time of war and it's a form of martial
  410. 19:08law so that was going on now none of us
  411. 19:11I even including myself the other thing
  412. 19:14of course was they began to set the
  413. 19:17groundwork for torturing and so there
  414. 19:20was a whole series of memos including
  415. 19:22one in written in February before the
  416. 19:24actual real torture memo that says you
  417. 19:26can do everything up to death or organ
  418. 19:29damage and it's not considered torture
  419. 19:31which is the one John you wrote but
  420. 19:33before that in February of 2002 John you
  421. 19:36wrote one they wrote one that said the
  422. 19:39the Geneva Conventions no longer apply
  423. 19:42and so if the Geneva Conventions no
  424. 19:44longer apply what are the GE
  425. 19:46conventions protect us against torture
  426. 19:48and so that was told to the military and
  427. 19:51then you had these abuses beginning very
  428. 19:54quickly after 9/11 so I'm gonna see go
  429. 20:00to my next thing here and by the way
  430. 20:04those those articles I have where I'm
  431. 20:07missing one here but if you if you miss
  432. 20:10something I say or whatever I've written
  433. 20:12this article for the intelligence ethics
  434. 20:14intelligence journal entitled war on
  435. 20:18terror a fault solution and so you can
  436. 20:22google it and you can it's kind of long
  437. 20:23it would have been long to copy but say
  438. 20:27something actually there were a stack of
  439. 20:29those articles they've already been
  440. 20:31distributed I have the text document so
  441. 20:35if anybody wants to email me my card is
  442. 20:38up here on the table just email me and I
  443. 20:40will send you by back by email the other
  444. 20:44article okay thank you yeah and that's
  445. 20:46the article I'm much better on paper
  446. 20:49than I am
  447. 20:50verbally like maybe like my president I
  448. 20:53feel sorry for him in some ways because
  449. 20:56it's I can do it better in writing and I
  450. 20:58take you can take your time and you can
  451. 21:00be more precise etc so I've written
  452. 21:02about these things a lot and I want to
  453. 21:05go now though to the story here in
  454. 21:07Minnesota we had in August 16th or 14th
  455. 21:14or 15th the day before a call two calls
  456. 21:17came in from a flight school in Eagan
  457. 21:19and these were whistleblower pilot
  458. 21:23instructors they were going against
  459. 21:25their own company their company said
  460. 21:27keep your mouth shut
  461. 21:29we have this most suspicious flight
  462. 21:32student we've ever had he paid in cash
  463. 21:35he couldn't explain what he why he
  464. 21:37wanted to learn to fly and then it there
  465. 21:40was there was there's actually 20-some
  466. 21:42pages of facts that were so suspicious
  467. 21:44well these two flight instructors called
  468. 21:47us separately they didn't even know the
  469. 21:48other one was calling and they landed on
  470. 21:50our one of our best agents but he was a
  471. 21:52young agent because he had been a
  472. 21:54himself in aviation in the in the
  473. 21:57military I think he was in the Marines
  474. 21:59or something or Navy
  475. 22:00he was a Navy aviation aviator and so he
  476. 22:03called N+ he had a background in
  477. 22:05terrorism because we our office here had
  478. 22:07just started up a joint terrorist task
  479. 22:09force one of the first in the country so
  480. 22:12he they landed called in and they land
  481. 22:14on him he was like oh wow and he got an
  482. 22:18AI NS agent they followed up on it
  483. 22:20quickly you know within the next day
  484. 22:22they went out to the flight school they
  485. 22:24talked to the actual instructor who
  486. 22:26verified everything that had come in and
  487. 22:30and then they determined that it was so
  488. 22:34dangerous now you would never have known
  489. 22:37this from condi rice saying no one would
  490. 22:40ever know a plane would fly into a
  491. 22:42building and she said this and many
  492. 22:44other officials said the same thing
  493. 22:45after 9/11 on August 16th this Mousawi
  494. 22:50was his name french moroccan was taken
  495. 22:52into custody and you know what he was
  496. 22:56suspected of interference with aviation
  497. 23:00and the other one was a terrorist charge
  498. 23:03they were the exact same two charges
  499. 23:06that years later he was charged with and
  500. 23:08he got a life imprisonment for it
  501. 23:10because he was connected to the other
  502. 23:12al-qaeda people so after 9/11 of course
  503. 23:16no one wanted to talk about the fact
  504. 23:18that there was somebody in custody
  505. 23:21already for three and a half weeks and
  506. 23:24why didn't you do anything when you knew
  507. 23:26this and then of course it turns out it
  508. 23:28wasn't just Mousawi because a Phoenix
  509. 23:31FBI agent in July and before this he
  510. 23:35wrote the memo in July before this had
  511. 23:37noticed many terrorists training in
  512. 23:39flight schools and he had sent a memo in
  513. 23:42and the memo said seven eight pages and
  514. 23:45it said look at all this and he had big
  515. 23:47you know documented histories of these
  516. 23:50terrorists training in flight schools
  517. 23:51and these last sentences extremely
  518. 23:53urgent the FBI must check out all flight
  519. 23:56schools right away that memo came into
  520. 23:58the FBI headquarters on July 10th or
  521. 24:0211th of 2001 plenty of time that would
  522. 24:05have been two months beforehand and then
  523. 24:08we actually do find one training in
  524. 24:11flight school here okay
  525. 24:13no one ever even read or they claimed
  526. 24:17they didn't read these memos can you
  527. 24:19believe this the memo
  528. 24:21the Phoenix memo was addressed to people
  529. 24:23at headquarters and they deny ever
  530. 24:25having read it after 9/11 one one person
  531. 24:29like an analyst did read it but only one
  532. 24:31analyst read it and the rest of the the
  533. 24:33supervisors deny having read it and of
  534. 24:36course they and these were the same
  535. 24:37supervisors that knew about the Mousawi
  536. 24:40case there was such a reluctance to act
  537. 24:43on the information that was the agents
  538. 24:46requested an emergency search warrant
  539. 24:49under the FISA law and there's you know
  540. 24:51people think well the faisal of there's
  541. 24:53an emergency exception so if you have an
  542. 24:56emergency you can actually just do it
  543. 24:58this quickly you just have to get a
  544. 24:59judge and you say it's emergency and a
  545. 25:02day later then you have to put all the
  546. 25:03fat or a couple days later you have a
  547. 25:05couple of days so they requested an
  548. 25:07emergency exception in order to search
  549. 25:10moussaoui's belongings whatever and our
  550. 25:12headquarters had all these reasons you
  551. 25:14know but they they read the document but
  552. 25:17they didn't they verbally briefed people
  553. 25:19they didn't even allow the higher-ups to
  554. 25:21read it there was verbal briefings that
  555. 25:23went on so there's and then of course
  556. 25:26there's a worse there's a third part of
  557. 25:29the FBI this is I'm only talking about
  558. 25:30the FBI I'm not talking about NSA's
  559. 25:33failures or CIA's failures and most of
  560. 25:37those to this day we don't know a whole
  561. 25:39lot about because they didn't have like
  562. 25:42the CIA for instance I don't think had
  563. 25:44any whistleblowers
  564. 25:44so to this day we don't know the the
  565. 25:47different the problems with the CIA but
  566. 25:50we can we can guess at some of them
  567. 25:52because the CIA had been monitoring this
  568. 25:56group of al Qaeda operatives since an
  569. 25:59important meeting in kuala lumpur that
  570. 26:02occurred about two years before item
  571. 26:04something like that i can't remember the
  572. 26:06exact dates they never told the FBI
  573. 26:08about it but they'd been following these
  574. 26:11people well they knew that two of them
  575. 26:13of the people that had met in kuala
  576. 26:15lumpur were coming to California and at
  577. 26:19one point they actually did know that
  578. 26:20that one of them of the two came into
  579. 26:23California and yet we we start ticking
  580. 26:26off the time before nine
  581. 26:27seven there was never a notification to
  582. 26:30the FBI
  583. 26:31until I think it was just a few days or
  584. 26:34before 9/11 they finally tell the FBI
  585. 26:37that this al-qaeda terrorist is in
  586. 26:39California and now they're trying to
  587. 26:42desperately find that person and to this
  588. 26:44day we don't know how and why that
  589. 26:47happened we have an agent actually two
  590. 26:50agents that wrote memos because they
  591. 26:52were in the CIA they were they were
  592. 26:54temporarily assigned and they wrote
  593. 26:56memos trying to notify the FBI and those
  594. 26:59memos were stopped and so the FBI never
  595. 27:02even learned that two of the terrorists
  596. 27:04were in California and that there's a
  597. 27:06lot more to that that maybe I'll have
  598. 27:07time to go into but going back to the
  599. 27:10story here this terrible mischance that
  600. 27:13former New York Times reporter Phillip
  601. 27:16Sheen and and he became quite an expert
  602. 27:18on 9/11 because he wrote this book
  603. 27:20called the Commission it's a big thick
  604. 27:22book I have it at home and I've haven't
  605. 27:24really ever read it because it's it's
  606. 27:26it's pretty daunting but he followed
  607. 27:28every single you know every bit of that
  608. 27:31Commission case the 9/11 Commission and
  609. 27:33he finds out you know actually years
  610. 27:36later I want to say 2014 or 14 is when
  611. 27:41this memos written it took a long time
  612. 27:42even for him to learn but there was a
  613. 27:45memo I'll show it to you that said okay
  614. 27:53I'll come back to this let's see is that
  615. 27:55the memo this is the memo itself and you
  616. 27:58maybe can't read it but it says director
  617. 28:00free who is the FBI director at the time
  618. 28:02and it says bin Laden and eben Kitab
  619. 28:06threat reporting and a little bit of
  620. 28:09blacked out there but it says in there
  621. 28:11they are heavily entwined even Kitab was
  622. 28:17a Chechen terrorists they're also the
  623. 28:21same you know more or less very closely
  624. 28:24related to to al-qaeda al-qaeda aligned
  625. 28:28and during Charlie Wilson's War which is
  626. 28:32when we had this brilliant idea that we
  627. 28:35would arm the Mujahideen in Afghanistan
  628. 28:38to fight the Soviets and we gave them
  629. 28:40Stinger
  630. 28:41Souls and we kind of trapped the Soviet
  631. 28:44Union is a big new Brzezinski did it at
  632. 28:46the time and they trapped they trapped
  633. 28:48the Soviet Union and they gave the
  634. 28:50Mujahideen frontline did a great
  635. 28:52documentary on this you know there so
  636. 28:55there's a little bit of truth about this
  637. 28:56Charlie Wilson's War Charlie Wilson's
  638. 28:58War how many people have seen that movie
  639. 29:00okay
  640. 29:01what you what Charlie Wilson's War
  641. 29:02needed was the sequel because it ended
  642. 29:05on such a high note because you know
  643. 29:07Brazil skis plan worked and the Soviet
  644. 29:09Union exhausted itself and you know with
  645. 29:13infighting the this these groups of
  646. 29:15Mujahideen in Afghanistan and it was
  647. 29:17part of the reason why how the Soviet
  648. 29:20Union collapsed and so everybody at the
  649. 29:22end of Charlie Wilson's War they gave he
  650. 29:24gets an award a prize because you know
  651. 29:26he his plan worked it wasn't just his it
  652. 29:29was others but the truth is there's a
  653. 29:31sequel to it and the sequel is 9/11
  654. 29:33because this group of Mujahideen was al
  655. 29:37Qaeda was what became the Taliban in al
  656. 29:40Qaeda
  657. 29:40so we were the ones arming them and
  658. 29:43funding them in Afghanistan but you'll
  659. 29:46never other than the frontline
  660. 29:48documentary told the truth about it but
  661. 29:50you hardly ever hear an official mention
  662. 29:52that oh we made this mistake because we
  663. 29:54were on helping the terrorists and then
  664. 29:56of course they turned against you had
  665. 29:58been lauding turned against us for a
  666. 29:59couple of reasons so going back to this
  667. 30:02memo his they were working together even
  668. 30:05Kitab of the Chechen and bin Laden now
  669. 30:09when moosa' when the the information was
  670. 30:14sent the this you know pages of facts
  671. 30:16that they got from the pot the pilot
  672. 30:18instructor of Mousawi
  673. 30:20was sent to Great Britain and it was
  674. 30:23sent to France because he was French
  675. 30:25Moroccan France you know anything about
  676. 30:27this was sent right away they worked
  677. 30:30overnight it was sent there they fell on
  678. 30:32a also a we call him legal attache z--
  679. 30:36but FBI agents that are in embassies he
  680. 30:38ran it to the French right away to the
  681. 30:40French law enforcement and the French
  682. 30:44you know equivalent of their
  683. 30:45intelligence agencies and they looked at
  684. 30:47and they said all while and they sent
  685. 30:49right back it's just a few days later
  686. 30:51they sent back that that Mousawi
  687. 30:54was
  688. 30:55was recruiting for a bin khattab and
  689. 30:58actually he even recruited one of his
  690. 31:01friends who have been killed in fighting
  691. 31:02in Chechnya so you know this this this
  692. 31:06piece of information was put immediately
  693. 31:08into the facts and yet headquarters you
  694. 31:11know who cares well we don't know this
  695. 31:14memo that that existed if you see the
  696. 31:17date up there it's April 2001 and again
  697. 31:21the the supervisors and the officials at
  698. 31:24FBI headquarters even though their names
  699. 31:27are right there these are all like
  700. 31:29assistant directors at the bottom one to
  701. 31:31Picard he became the acting FBI director
  702. 31:33one to roll-ons but the Rowland's their
  703. 31:36names are right down there they claim
  704. 31:38they never saw it okay I think you might
  705. 31:42see where I'm going with this if and I'm
  706. 31:45not the only person the 9/11 Commission
  707. 31:48says not 9/11 was a failure that would
  708. 31:53they say it was a failure to connect the
  709. 31:54dots it was a failure to read
  710. 31:57information for starters just to read it
  711. 32:00then to share information because the
  712. 32:04agencies were not sharing in furn
  713. 32:06tearing information inside the agencies
  714. 32:08let alone between agencies and then
  715. 32:11third to act on the information and
  716. 32:14maybe the most egregious failure to act
  717. 32:17on information was George Tenet was the
  718. 32:20director of Central Intelligence and the
  719. 32:23and he was he was CIA director but this
  720. 32:26was before they formed the National
  721. 32:29Intelligence Center and everything after
  722. 32:32after 9/11 they formed this Center and
  723. 32:34now they have an intelligence czar
  724. 32:36director but before that it was George
  725. 32:39Tenet the CIA director was the director
  726. 32:42of Central Intelligence he was supposed
  727. 32:43to be overseeing all the intelligence
  728. 32:46community well on August 23rd he was
  729. 32:50briefed with a two slides entitled
  730. 32:54fundamentalist learns to fly and that
  731. 32:56was a slide about Mousawi and it had all
  732. 33:00of the suspicious things about him it
  733. 33:02was just two slides and it just had some
  734. 33:04bare bones and and he we don't know who
  735. 33:07else he might have briefed about that
  736. 33:08boy you know
  737. 33:09went up to the very top even though of
  738. 33:11the FBI didn't care and they weren't
  739. 33:13reading it the whole the head of the
  740. 33:15whole thing George Tenet knew about this
  741. 33:17on August 23rd 2001 and in fact on the
  742. 33:21morning of 9/11 he's having breakfast
  743. 33:24with his mentor in Oklahoma and someone
  744. 33:26runs in and says the plane has hit the
  745. 33:28World Trade Center and the first thing
  746. 33:31out of George Tenet smell 'this I wonder
  747. 33:33if it's the guy in Minnesota and that
  748. 33:36one newspaper article caught him saying
  749. 33:38that so it was kind of known later when
  750. 33:42he has to testify to the 9/11 Commission
  751. 33:44he's asked well why didn't you do
  752. 33:46anything why why didn't you act on this
  753. 33:49information that you knew of the
  754. 33:51information from Minnesota and he just
  755. 33:53kind of shrugs and says well I didn't
  756. 33:55think it was my job and that that's well
  757. 33:58and in theory you know he's he's CIA
  758. 34:00were they were the FBI so I thought the
  759. 34:03FBI would handle it that was his excuse
  760. 34:05so but this memo was was very key
  761. 34:10because if they had read it they all now
  762. 34:12say including Rollins who was was the
  763. 34:15boss of the supervisors he says if he
  764. 34:18would have seen this memo would have
  765. 34:19changed everything
  766. 34:20because then he would have known that
  767. 34:22you bin khattab and bin Laden were
  768. 34:24entwined because one of the arguments
  769. 34:26was that the Chechen terrorist group was
  770. 34:29not a real terrorist group partly
  771. 34:32because we we always use these groups as
  772. 34:36proxy forces and in Chechnya especially
  773. 34:39know what they're fighting the the
  774. 34:41Soviets and whatever so when you're
  775. 34:43using them you're kind of loath to call
  776. 34:45them put them on a terrorist list and
  777. 34:47and we've had to take other terrorist
  778. 34:49groups off our list in order to use them
  779. 34:52we took an Iranian mech group Mujahideen
  780. 34:55khalq under Hillary Clinton with we took
  781. 34:58them off the list even though they'd
  782. 34:59killed Americans and everything why
  783. 35:01because we're using them now in Iran to
  784. 35:04do to assassinate etc so we had to take
  785. 35:07them off and on off and on these
  786. 35:08terrorist lists and so that's probably
  787. 35:10one of the reasons why you know they
  788. 35:12didn't want to go too far with the fact
  789. 35:14that bin Laden and Gibbon Kitab were
  790. 35:16connected but anyways nobody even claims
  791. 35:19or says that they even read the memo and
  792. 35:22it
  793. 35:23would have made a big difference now I'm
  794. 35:26gonna go back here if I can find it
  795. 35:28so one of the conversations in the
  796. 35:32lead-up to in the lead-up to 9/11 the
  797. 35:37effort the FBI agents not me I was just
  798. 35:39the legal counsel in the office and so I
  799. 35:42knew these agents were tearing their
  800. 35:44hair out I would talk to him a little
  801. 35:45bit in the hallways and I knew that they
  802. 35:47were trying desperately and I knew all
  803. 35:50of these shenanigans that were going on
  804. 35:53and of course they were trying to go up
  805. 35:54to the boss to call the boss you always
  806. 35:57have to go up echelons in these
  807. 35:59hierarchies but it the Minneapolis
  808. 36:01office didn't have a our special agent
  809. 36:04in charge had just retired and so there
  810. 36:07wasn't anyone with this sufficient clout
  811. 36:09to make the call in to headquarters to
  812. 36:11say hey why are you giving a runaround
  813. 36:13to these agents they they found a
  814. 36:15terrorist suspect here and so that was
  815. 36:17one of the problems but during one of
  816. 36:20these conversations I want to say August
  817. 36:2328th the supervisor is on the hour
  818. 36:26supervisor Minneapolis supervisor is on
  819. 36:29the phone and he is trying to make them
  820. 36:32desperately see what is the risk here
  821. 36:35and he actually sit on the phone don't
  822. 36:38you know this is a guy who could fly
  823. 36:40into the World Trade Center he said this
  824. 36:42in August of 2001 and and yet condi rice
  825. 36:48and robert muller and george tenet in
  826. 36:53all of those officials of course they're
  827. 36:55all planning nefarious other things that
  828. 36:57had nothing to do with 9/11 and they
  829. 36:59desperately don't want the truth to come
  830. 37:01out they all go out in front of cameras
  831. 37:04in the days after 9/11 and said no one
  832. 37:07could have known or done anything to
  833. 37:10prevent this
  834. 37:11they said condi said nobody would know a
  835. 37:15plane could fly into a building
  836. 37:17even though condi rice was involved in
  837. 37:19training exercises or that was part of
  838. 37:22the of the thing that was part of the
  839. 37:24narrative that they were planning for
  840. 37:26and yet she went in front of cameras and
  841. 37:28said and said these things and and our
  842. 37:31agent had actually presently had
  843. 37:33actually said this is a guy who could
  844. 37:35fly into a World Trade Center
  845. 37:37now he wrote it though he had proof
  846. 37:38because when he he they were keeping
  847. 37:40notes of everything and he actually
  848. 37:42wrote that down in his notes and the the
  849. 37:45guy at headquarters says I don't
  850. 37:46remember I don't remember that so most
  851. 37:48of what the answer is on all of these
  852. 37:50things is don't remember that our acting
  853. 37:54director tried to tell attorney general
  854. 37:57Ashcroft in July to you know be more
  855. 38:02concerned about terrorism make it the
  856. 38:05top priority why because they were being
  857. 38:08flooded with intelligence not just that
  858. 38:11last memo I told you April 2001 that was
  859. 38:14one but there were other memos that were
  860. 38:16just flooding in saying that you know we
  861. 38:19were gonna suffer an attack now we had
  862. 38:22already suffered attacks the embassies
  863. 38:24in Africa had been bombed the Col Navy
  864. 38:28ship had been bombed and by the way that
  865. 38:31was all the the same people that were
  866. 38:32connected the Khobar towers in Saudi
  867. 38:36Arabia had been bombed I minnesotan died
  868. 38:39in the Khobar towers bombing in the late
  869. 38:4190s and that was covered up by Louis
  870. 38:43Freeh he said he said the same thing
  871. 38:45Iranian did it and it almost certainly
  872. 38:48was al Qaeda they were trying to kick
  873. 38:50the United States military out of Saudi
  874. 38:52Arabia so there had been these other
  875. 38:54attacks and plus they were getting all
  876. 38:56this intelligence to the point where the
  877. 38:599/11 Commission the chapter about all of
  878. 39:01this intelligence coming in is entitled
  879. 39:04the system was blinking red that's the
  880. 39:08title of the chapter now just remember
  881. 39:10it didn't come out till about three
  882. 39:11years too late but that's the name of
  883. 39:13the chapter and they said that Richard
  884. 39:15Clark who was the intelligence director
  885. 39:17and George Tenet who was the head of all
  886. 39:19counterterrorism and all intelligence in
  887. 39:21the United States they said their hair
  888. 39:23was on fire their hair was on fire they
  889. 39:27were getting so much and Richard Clark
  890. 39:28says you know I was calling him daily
  891. 39:30about this Richard Clark was pleading
  892. 39:33with condi rice he tried pleading he's
  893. 39:35written a whole book about it and he
  894. 39:37went on 60 minutes he was pleading with
  895. 39:39her to have a meeting about trying to
  896. 39:42stop terrorism and yet after 9/11 no no
  897. 39:45one no one would have known no one would
  898. 39:48have known that nine oh that playing
  899. 39:50fly into a building that's the end of
  900. 39:59there's more this is that that into that
  901. 40:01memo by the way I'm not leaking a
  902. 40:04classified document the only case that
  903. 40:07went to court and and it's the reason we
  904. 40:11know any of this that's the only reason
  905. 40:13Phillip Sheen and new found out about
  906. 40:15this narrow mischance
  907. 40:17is because one of the terrorist suspects
  908. 40:21and really of all of them has been tried
  909. 40:23in federal court as a crime as a regular
  910. 40:28crime instead of this war on terror and
  911. 40:31that person was Mousawi and there were
  912. 40:34two hun I think two hundred and sixty or
  913. 40:36maybe it's even more than that but a few
  914. 40:38hundred exhibits that came out in that
  915. 40:42trial and this was an exhibit in
  916. 40:44moussaoui's trial and people didn't even
  917. 40:46notice it until Philip Sheen and found
  918. 40:48it you know it's it's one of hundreds of
  919. 40:50exhibits but that's the only thing that
  920. 40:53that's the only way that we learned
  921. 40:54anything about the truth of this because
  922. 40:56otherwise in a war it remains classified
  923. 40:58intelligence remains classified for for
  924. 41:01almost forever
  925. 41:02there are things from sinking the
  926. 41:04Lusitania that are still classified so
  927. 41:07if you don't have a federal trial it's
  928. 41:09one of the ways that you learn things
  929. 41:14okay so one of the things that's been
  930. 41:18covered up for a significant period of
  931. 41:20time and and this did get some news
  932. 41:22coverage so you might well know about it
  933. 41:24was called the 28 pages the Joint
  934. 41:28Intelligence Committee produced a couple
  935. 41:30of reports they had I think a pretty
  936. 41:33good Pentagon analyst to produce this
  937. 41:35preliminary report
  938. 41:37her name was Eleanor Eleanor can't
  939. 41:41remember last name but she was pretty
  940. 41:42good and she produced a report pretty
  941. 41:44quickly to this is where I first
  942. 41:46testified to the Joint Intelligence
  943. 41:47Committee but when she testified and
  944. 41:50gave this first preliminary report of
  945. 41:52the Joint Intelligence Committee
  946. 41:53she actually said before I start I gotta
  947. 41:56tell you I was not allowed to go up very
  948. 41:59high you know Here I am
  949. 42:01whatever her rank is you know it's it's
  950. 42:04no colonel or something I don't know but
  951. 42:06it's it's not as high as the president
  952. 42:08and so she was stopped and could not go
  953. 42:11above that level and so she actually
  954. 42:13said you know I'll tell you what I know
  955. 42:14but I was not allowed to question the
  956. 42:16president or any of these people and she
  957. 42:19did she did a fair job and actually in
  958. 42:22the course of the Joint Intelligence
  959. 42:23Committee they had found out that all
  960. 42:26some of the funding for the hijackers
  961. 42:29and the support for the hijackers I told
  962. 42:32you two of them came in to California
  963. 42:34and I was all secret that from the FBI
  964. 42:36you know until the until too late but
  965. 42:39they were helped and who were they
  966. 42:42helped by finding apartments they were
  967. 42:44helped given money different things and
  968. 42:47I think they even attended a mosque that
  969. 42:50Awlaki wasn't was involved in etc well
  970. 42:53they were helped by well the 9/11 the
  971. 42:579/11 pages doesn't say exactly this they
  972. 43:01just have the facts down about money
  973. 43:03going and one of them the money goes
  974. 43:06from Bandar bin Sultan who's like a
  975. 43:10nephew he's a very high level in the
  976. 43:14Saud family he's been an ambassador and
  977. 43:17in the United States for decades and he
  978. 43:19was close close friends with with the
  979. 43:22Bush family and in fact his nickname was
  980. 43:25banned our Bush his Bandar bin Sultan
  981. 43:28but his nickname was banned our Bush
  982. 43:30because he was so close with them and
  983. 43:32you know they did favors for each other
  984. 43:35and etc and anyways there's there's
  985. 43:39money that flows from his wife it's kind
  986. 43:42of circuitous right to these terrorists
  987. 43:44suspects and then there's other Saudi
  988. 43:47officials and if you really research
  989. 43:50this now they've done a pretty good job
  990. 43:51of learning that some of the Saud family
  991. 43:54of course are fundamentalist Wahhabi you
  992. 43:59know people and that they were helping
  993. 44:01the terrorists now this was all covered
  994. 44:03up now
  995. 44:04the head of our Senate committee that
  996. 44:06did the Joint Intelligence Committee was
  997. 44:08Bob Graham and Bob Graham has written a
  998. 44:11whole book about this as well you know
  999. 44:14the the good thing is one of the reasons
1000. 44:15I can speak a little freely now
  1001. 44:18is that this isn't Coleen Rowley
  1002. 44:19speaking from my experience there's
1003. 44:21books written about it now very few
1004. 44:23people in United States know it because
1005. 44:25our media suppresses all of this but in
1006. 44:28fact there are books and these officials
1007. 44:30who lived in Bridget including Bob
1008. 44:32Graham he was a longtime senator and he
1009. 44:35was furious because when this this these
1010. 44:3928 pages that document oh and the
1011. 44:42veranda sitting on the veranda it's Dick
1012. 44:45Cheney Ben Bandar bin Sultan condi rice
1013. 44:49and Bush and the only thing is it almost
  1014. 44:52looks like they're having a drink or
  1015. 44:53something on the veranda and I I always
1016. 44:55wondered when was this photo taken was
  1017. 44:57it taken after 9/11 where they're like
  1018. 44:59sitting there I don't know when it was
1019. 45:01taken but this is a pretty incredible
  1020. 45:03thing where they're all like having a
1021. 45:06conversation going back to the 28 pages
1022. 45:10I'm Bob Graham was furious that this was
  1023. 45:15squashed completely squashed and
1024. 45:18censored it was completely blacked out
1025. 45:21and so it was really the only thing
1026. 45:24that's blacked out of the report and the
1027. 45:26families then have to fight because they
1028. 45:29are trying through lawsuits to sue you
1029. 45:32know responsible parties and some of the
1030. 45:34families are trying to sue Saudi Arabia
1031. 45:36and they tried the court says no
1032. 45:39evidence no evidence well of course the
1033. 45:41evidence is blacked out so they they're
1034. 45:44there their suit was dismissed a couple
  1035. 45:47of times
  1036. 45:47finally in 2016 I think or 17 they
1037. 45:54finally get Congress to pass a law
1038. 45:56called the Jasta jast a which stands for
  1039. 46:01I should be I shouldn't remember these
  1040. 46:05acronyms but it's it's you know fighting
1041. 46:08terrorism sup you know whatever and it
1042. 46:10allows families to sue Saudi Arabia no
1043. 46:14other foreign country but Saudi Arabia
1044. 46:16made one exception and one of the
1045. 46:18reasons for that is Graham and others
1046. 46:20were finally getting through to the
1047. 46:23media and it was creating some pressure
1048. 46:25so they finally Congress passed this law
1049. 46:27and then Obama vetoed it
  1050. 46:31you know he'll say well I don't want to
1051. 46:33create bad foreign relations with Saudi
1052. 46:35Arabia so we can't you know let these
1053. 46:38pages come out and then they course they
  1054. 46:40downplay they said it's meaningless when
1055. 46:42it goes to the 9/11 Commission the
  1056. 46:44writer of the 9/11 Commission report
1057. 46:46zelich oh you know deliberately candid
1058. 46:49he didn't want to hear about it and it
1059. 46:50was never investigated and he fired a
1060. 46:53couple of the investigators that were
1061. 46:56looking into this thing they were let go
1062. 46:58so it's obviously that this this was
1063. 47:01pretty important that it was that Saudi
1064. 47:04Arabia officials some Saudi Arabia
1065. 47:08officials and by the way miss Aoi says
1066. 47:10it's too now the lawyers for these
1067. 47:12families have been able to interview him
  1068. 47:16in prison in supermax prison and I don't
1069. 47:19know how much of this could be true or
  1070. 47:21not he certainly has a motive
1071. 47:23and he was he was not seen as real
1072. 47:25stable anyways plus then he's been in
1073. 47:27supermax prison forever so heaven knows
1074. 47:29if how much of this could be true but he
1075. 47:32verified that there was bin Laden was
1076. 47:34actually conducting fundraising from top
1077. 47:37Saudis and you know it would stand a
1078. 47:41reason because bin Laden came from a
1079. 47:44respected wealthy family in in Saudi
1080. 47:47Arabia and the Wahabi religion is the
1081. 47:49official state religion so it would you
1082. 47:52know it wasn't like he was a rogue bin
  1083. 47:55Laden was not necessarily considered a
1084. 47:57rogue in Saudi Arabia and it would not
1085. 48:00be surprising if top Saudi government
1086. 48:04officials were helping al Qaeda and yep
1087. 48:07you know it still remains the families
1088. 48:09have have collected a lot more evidence
1089. 48:12on this and we have hope that if this
  1090. 48:15case goes forward and isn't dismissed a
1091. 48:19third time that maybe some more truth
1092. 48:22will come out about it but no one knows
1093. 48:24for sure there this is the I don't think
1094. 48:28it says in here the name of it but this
1095. 48:29is the Jasta and after after it passed
1096. 48:33in Congress Saudi Arabia of course has
1097. 48:35lots of money they actually would take
1098. 48:36Congress people and military people on
1099. 48:39junkets to Saudi Arabia to try to
1100. 48:41influence them so that they would not
  1101. 48:43allow this case
  1102. 48:45go forward and they've they've spent
1103. 48:46millions on lobbying and PR and
1104. 48:48everything else on this and trying to
1105. 48:50fight it okay so at about two I'll stop
1106. 48:57for questions or so okay you know this
  1107. 49:01is 911 isn't the end Charlie Wilson's
1108. 49:05War is not the only time that we have
1109. 49:11used proxy forces and don't tell the
1110. 49:15American public who we really are arming
1111. 49:18and funding and the last case was Syria
1112. 49:21the you know the group that is the al
1113. 49:24Qaeda group in Syria and it's one of the
  1114. 49:26reasons
1115. 49:27Oh bomb ax was hesitant he had a lot of
  1116. 49:31pressure and to this day there's a ton
1117. 49:33of pressure now on Trump to have all-out
1118. 49:36war in Syria why because it's on the
  1119. 49:39list and it's it's the country before
1120. 49:41Iran and so there's been pressure on all
1121. 49:43these presidents but Obama was was
1122. 49:46hesitant he at one time was pressured to
1123. 49:48bomb Syria and he pulled back from it
1124. 49:50but he was he was pressured but this
1125. 49:53defense intelligence assessment did leak
1126. 49:55somehow and it basically says you know
1127. 49:59we're on the side of the al-nusrah and
1128. 50:01the other terrorists in Syria and the
1129. 50:04assad government is but what this is
1130. 50:06what we want because we're trying to
1131. 50:08topple the Assad government so we will
1132. 50:10use these proxy forces Petraeus gave a
1133. 50:13has given some foreign policy talks and
1134. 50:17whatever and he says well maybe it's
1135. 50:18time to cozy up to El noose right now
1136. 50:21they're better than Isis so when you
  1137. 50:23create a in a terrorist group that's
1138. 50:27even worse than al-qaeda now you can go
1139. 50:29out and say well oh maybe al-qaeda can
1140. 50:32be our friends because there's now even
1141. 50:33a worse group and we'll fight them but
1142. 50:36the truth is these terrorist groups have
  1143. 50:38mushroomed they've mushroomed and you
1144. 50:41know they call it whack-a-mole so one
1145. 50:43mushrooms up who's worse than the others
1146. 50:45and you have to hit that one down and
1147. 50:47then another one comes up and as long as
1148. 50:49our foreign policy and this whole thing
1149. 50:52does not change I think that we will
1150. 50:54continue to see an increase in terrorism
  1151. 50:56it'll do
1152. 50:57be new new groups they can call
1153. 50:59themselves new names in Syria they
1154. 51:01changed their names a million times you
1155. 51:03can't even keep up with the new names
1156. 51:05and part of that reason is that you know
1157. 51:07it's kind of fool everybody so you don't
1158. 51:09recognize the name anymore they come up
1159. 51:11every week they they come up with a new
1160. 51:13name and but this Defense Intelligence
1161. 51:17Estimate leak because it did tell the
1162. 51:19truth about it well this is a this is
1163. 51:30just a nutshell by Andrew base of it was
1164. 51:33a was a Boston University historian has
1165. 51:37anyone heard him speak he's been here
  1166. 51:39four or five times yeah he's he's
1167. 51:41written four or five books you know he
1168. 51:43really knows this stuff inside and out
1169. 51:46and he's you know his own son got killed
1170. 51:48in Iraq as well and he is really good
1171. 51:51and he just this is kind of in a
1172. 51:53nutshell what would what went on here in
1173. 51:56this effort to utopian globalism where
1174. 51:59the United States would be the
  1175. 52:01indispensable exceptional indispensable
1176. 52:04leader of the world the real problem now
1177. 52:07and this is you know having read all
1178. 52:11these foreign policy things for years
1179. 52:13now is that after 9/11 we had it
1180. 52:17relatively easy in launching wars on
  1181. 52:22really defenseless countries Afghanistan
  1182. 52:26Iraq Syria Yemen Somalia
1183. 52:32you know those countries don't even have
1184. 52:35military defenses and so for Americans
1185. 52:38that seemed pretty like war is easy if
1186. 52:40we even the first two war boots on the
1187. 52:42ground Afghanistan and Iraq but still a
  1188. 52:44few up I think it's about 8,000
  1189. 52:47casualties that's nothing compared to
1190. 52:50the casualties over there you know if
1191. 52:52you went by the Vietnam War standard
1192. 52:53where you just count the number of
1193. 52:55people you kill and you say you're
  1194. 52:56winning because you've killing you know
  1195. 52:58millions of people well they've they
1196. 53:00killed you know a million or so in in
1197. 53:02the Mideast and maybe more much more if
1198. 53:05you consider the chaos that got
1199. 53:07unleashed but Americans had relatively
  1200. 53:09little costs
  1201. 53:11and that's the that's one of my articles
1202. 53:12about the recipe concocted for perpetual
1203. 53:16war is after Vietnam they realized that
1204. 53:20Vietnam syndrome where people really
1205. 53:23understood that the Vietnam War had been
1206. 53:26a mistake and that what were we fighting
1207. 53:29for they had this domino theory it
1208. 53:31turned out not to be true and in the
1209. 53:33meantime you killed a lot of melee
1210. 53:35massacres and all the rest and you
1211. 53:37killed a lot of the Vietnamese peasants
1212. 53:39but what was the purpose of it and you
1213. 53:42know people had what they called a
1214. 53:44reluctance John McCain you know would
1215. 53:47actually give speeches and others did to
  1216. 53:49West Point
1217. 53:50West Point generals would write essays
1218. 53:52about how to defeat Vietnam syndrome so
1219. 53:56we can make the American public more
1220. 54:00gung-ho on launching Wars and you know
1221. 54:04that's one of the things they were able
1222. 54:06over time to get the polls way down now
1223. 54:09and I this latest documentary with burns
1224. 54:11Novick on the Vietnam War they're trying
1225. 54:13to rehabilitate the Vietnam War so that
1226. 54:16it seems like we really did have a noble
1227. 54:18cause etc and so over time that that has
1228. 54:21gone down and they defeated Vietnam
1229. 54:23syndrome also of course getting rid of
1230. 54:25the draft and the other big thing is no
1231. 54:28boots on the ground so by merely
1232. 54:30concentrating on aerial bombing and
  1233. 54:33drone bombing there's of course very
1234. 54:35little casualties to the United States
1235. 54:37and the other thing is a national debt
1236. 54:40that is just allowed to soar and it's up
1237. 54:44it's up to 21 trillion somebody asked me
1238. 54:46about the national debt before and
1239. 54:47saying that was bin Laden's idea to
  1240. 54:49begin with it's now up to 21 trillion
1241. 54:51with no end in sight and so very very
1242. 54:54dangerous for the United States in the
1243. 54:56scheme of things for national security
1244. 54:58this kind of thing but what is it what
1245. 55:00does it do keeps Americans from knowing
1246. 55:02James Madison had said back when he was
1247. 55:05writing the Constitution that you know
1248. 55:07will never be have standing armies
1249. 55:09because as soon as we levy taxes to pay
1250. 55:12for this military and right now it's
  1251. 55:14about a trillion dollars a year you know
1252. 55:16as soon as the Americans have to pay for
1253. 55:18this they will say you know it would
  1254. 55:21come to about
  1255. 55:22around $50,000 maybe even to $100,000
1256. 55:26per taxpayer right now per family if we
1257. 55:30were to have paid for all of these wars
1258. 55:32it's it's something like at least seven
1259. 55:35eight trillion dollars and you divide it
1260. 55:37by you know the the tax payers and you
1261. 55:39get several you know tens of thousands
1262. 55:44of dollars now if a bill came I would
1263. 55:47say even for 1/10 of that amount next
1264. 55:49tomorrow we say you know what we're
1265. 55:51conservative let's pay down some of this
  1266. 55:54war debt you know 21 trillion let's pay
  1267. 55:561000 we'll pay you pay 100th of what
1268. 56:00they've cost Wars would probably end
1269. 56:02tomorrow how many people would pay
1270. 56:04$1,000 you know even a small fraction of
1271. 56:07what we now own but by having the
1272. 56:09sliding thing so no one is aware of the
1273. 56:12fact that you know the worst cost
1274. 56:14anything and so it's pretty cost free
1275. 56:17that's part of my article that I wrote
1276. 56:19there and and it's also you know how
1277. 56:22difficult it is and this is why we're on
1278. 56:24this treadmill now of a perpetual war
1279. 56:29John McCain when he ran you remember he
1280. 56:32came here with Sarah Palin and and and
1281. 56:36campaigned a couple times and he said
1282. 56:40that the he didn't call it perpetual war
1283. 56:43he said this war will last another 100
1284. 56:45years and you know so 100 years
  1285. 56:49perpetual war it's you know it's beyond
1286. 56:51most of us to contemplate the problem is
1287. 56:53it was quite easy with these countries
1288. 56:55that didn't have defenses but now we are
1289. 56:58looking at the last three or so three or
1290. 57:00four including the main one of course
1291. 57:03Russia which has you know a couple
  1292. 57:05thousand nuclear missiles I think it's
  1293. 57:10not a couple thousand but it's like a
1294. 57:12thousand on trigger alert just says we
1295. 57:15have on them and even if a a few hundred
1296. 57:18of these nuclear bombs go off it creates
1297. 57:22a global winter and even if we don't get
1298. 57:25a direct hit it's pretty much the end of
1299. 57:27a map of human civilization and so we
1300. 57:30are looking now at confronting Russia
1301. 57:32and China Trump is doing that through
  1302. 57:35trade wars but
1303. 57:36in China and Iran and North Korea those
1304. 57:39are kind of like the last four that are
1305. 57:41out there that are not either not in our
1306. 57:43our umbrella or in the Mideast and these
1307. 57:47are not the same as you know we've kind
1308. 57:50of gotten so lacs about it because
  1309. 57:51there's it's been so cost-free but what
1310. 57:54we're looking at now and this very
  1311. 57:56dangerous time is actually not cost-free
1312. 57:59this is really really dangerous stuff to
1313. 58:03be talking about and during the Cold War
1314. 58:05you know we all had to go under the
1315. 58:07desks how many people had to practice I
1316. 58:09was the last of the baby boomers I think
1317. 58:11I was towards the Tauri I'm in the
1318. 58:14middle of the baby boomers I think but
1319. 58:15anyways we had to practice so it was one
1320. 58:17of the last times you had a had a siren
1321. 58:19going off and you were supposed to get
1322. 58:21under your desk and people were quite
1323. 58:23aware at the time of the danger of
1324. 58:25having these nuclear bombs on trigger
1325. 58:27alert that's why Reagan to his credit
1326. 58:31and Gorbachev really came to their
1327. 58:34senses and reduced it it's why of
  1328. 58:37Kennedy John F Kennedy finally listened
1329. 58:41not to the crazy Curtis LeMay Warhawks
1330. 58:43that were telling him to bomb Cuba but
1331. 58:46he listened to the one or two sane
1332. 58:47voices at that table because it looks
1333. 58:50like you know you're gonna start this
1334. 58:51and nobody can end it once these things
1335. 58:54go off it's and we just don't have the
1336. 58:56political will right now the American
  1337. 58:58people I'm really dismayed I've kind of
1338. 59:00I was much more of an activist here's my
1339. 59:03I was an activist that's me there
1340. 59:05standing behind the flag and we used to
1341. 59:09uh I I always said okay we stood out on
1342. 59:12a corner and I said you know we will
1343. 59:15really put it in question marks so we
1344. 59:17can make people think and and actually
1345. 59:19sometimes cars would stop slow down and
1346. 59:22they try to answer the questions but I
  1347. 59:25was I was I was actually a little more
1348. 59:26of an activist you know 17 years ago and
1349. 59:29and ten years ago or whatever as we're
1350. 59:32getting more and more along I really am
1351. 59:35having a hard time myself and not in
1352. 59:38losing hope about this because it just
1353. 59:41seems like no matter what president no
1354. 59:43matter who votes in it doesn't matter
1355. 59:45the party this war McCain you know his
  1356. 59:49legacy
1357. 59:50he might be right a hundred year war but
1358. 59:52he won't be he won't be right if it
1359. 59:54turns into a nuclear holocaust and his
1360. 59:57legacy you know he won't even have
1361. 59:58anyone to glorify is his legacy if in
1362. 1:00:03fact he gets what he wanted which was
  1363. 1:00:04this all-out war
  1364. 1:00:06so yeah 9/11 9/11 is the things you
1365. 1:00:10might have read or seen about it and the
1366. 1:00:12the media establishment mostly not true
1367. 1:00:15to this day we don't know a lot of
  1368. 1:00:17things to this day there's still a lot
1369. 1:00:19of murky parts of it
1370. 1:00:21I just watched I'm gonna stop here but I
  1371. 1:00:24just watched a video called it's called
1372. 1:00:27911 follow the money and so have you
1373. 1:00:31seen this one it's got two million
1374. 1:00:33people have seen it it's the Corbett
1375. 1:00:35report and it was done in 2015 it's got
1376. 1:00:38a lot of people that have seen it and
  1377. 1:00:40that's pretty well-documented about how
1378. 1:00:42much money was traded insider trading
1379. 1:00:46and they all made unprecedented amounts
1380. 1:00:49of money maybe somebody knew that 9/11
1381. 1:00:52was going to happen because all of a
1382. 1:00:54sudden they had all of these trades and
1383. 1:00:56people they called him put they were
1384. 1:00:58betting against United and American and
1385. 1:01:00stuff and they made all this money so
1386. 1:01:02there this is a good video it's about an
1387. 1:01:04hour long and but that's just one of the
1388. 1:01:07areas to this day that was never
1389. 1:01:09investigated you know it was or if it
  1390. 1:01:11was investigated it wasn't investigated
1391. 1:01:13very well so thanks for listening and
1392. 1:01:17there's AI have more in my pieces and
1393. 1:01:20I'll be happy to answer questions and I
1394. 1:01:22have the mic and I would because this
  1395. 1:01:25program is being filmed I'd really
1396. 1:01:27appreciate it if people use the mic to
1397. 1:01:29ask questions could somebody over there
1398. 1:01:31under the night switches just pull up
1399. 1:01:33push up on the rheostat so we can get
  1400. 1:01:35light who has a question I'll bring you
1401. 1:01:37the mic okay I'm gonna do my best it's
  1402. 1:01:40not so easy because there's people
  1403. 1:01:41sitting down but I see a couple of
1404. 1:01:43questions one of the things I think
  1405. 1:01:48we've lost the moral compass and I I
  1406. 1:01:51don't know if I'm correcting this but I
1407. 1:01:53think all but one of the hijackers was
1408. 1:01:56Saudi Arabia and I think we have sold
1409. 1:01:58out to oil we just that whole thing of
  1410. 1:02:03losing the moral calm
1411. 1:02:04we're just in a mire swamp it was a
1412. 1:02:09couple of points about this 15 of the 19
1413. 1:02:12were Saudis the other four were United
1414. 1:02:16Arab Emirates I think one was Libyan do
1415. 1:02:21you know what the other four were that
1416. 1:02:22were not Saudi okay let me think Oh eat
1417. 1:02:28Egyptian Otto was Egyptian so four of
1418. 1:02:33them were not Saudi but that they were
1419. 1:02:35all in this Wahhabi persuasion which is
  1420. 1:02:38Saudi Arabia is a place that's
1421. 1:02:40originated this extreme you know very
1422. 1:02:43fundamentalist form form and the other
1423. 1:02:47thing you mentioned is the moral compass
1424. 1:02:48what I've noticed also is that the
1425. 1:02:51ability through propaganda to persuade
1426. 1:02:56people that we are doing the moral thing
1427. 1:02:59it goes back to Vietnam where they said
1428. 1:03:02we have to bomb the village to save it
1429. 1:03:04and so if you and I you know if it was
1430. 1:03:07Robert Delahunty was coming he would
1431. 1:03:09probably be a good one to bring up the
  1432. 1:03:11ticking time-bomb hypothetical on
1433. 1:03:14torture because this whole group of
1434. 1:03:16people that decided to authorize torture
1435. 1:03:19believed in this this ends justify the
1436. 1:03:23means form of ethics utilitarian ethics
  1437. 1:03:27and there's actually two forms of
1438. 1:03:30utilitarian ethics but the one form is
  1439. 1:03:32that you concoct a happy ending a good
  1440. 1:03:37goal like it's like Vietnam if you're if
1441. 1:03:39your goal is to liberate people if your
1442. 1:03:41goal is to get information to find the
1443. 1:03:43ticking time bomb to save lives in New
  1444. 1:03:45York City so what you're doing is you're
1445. 1:03:47you're positing or concocting this real
1446. 1:03:51great outcome and then rationalizing
  1447. 1:03:54backwards
1448. 1:03:55despite facts and saying well now the
1449. 1:03:58ends justify the means because you have
1450. 1:04:00this great goal and so that's you know
1451. 1:04:03we had actually a st. Thomas ethicist
  1452. 1:04:06write about this I've been in I've been
  1453. 1:04:08in panels fighting with a utilitarian
1454. 1:04:11emphasis that that said torture is
  1455. 1:04:14ethical and that's their moral compass
  1456. 1:04:15because they they
  1457. 1:04:17their heads they're creating this good
1458. 1:04:18outcome ends justify the means
1459. 1:04:20so that's a problem to be we do it too
1460. 1:04:23with humanitarian war principles right
1461. 1:04:26now under Obama they found that this was
1462. 1:04:29kind of really seductive to people
  1463. 1:04:31because they say they're fighting for
1464. 1:04:32human rights and and Samantha power has
1465. 1:04:36written books about this you know ending
1466. 1:04:37genocide whatever but the problem is
1467. 1:04:40it's a self appointment of the United
1468. 1:04:43States that gets to determine as a
1469. 1:04:46policeman of the world where as a
1470. 1:04:48genocide that we get what bombing
1471. 1:04:51bombing Libya was like this bombing
1472. 1:04:53Libya was justified by Hillary Clinton
1473. 1:04:56Samantha power and Susan Rice three
  1474. 1:04:58women who actually convinced the male's
  1475. 1:05:01the defense secretary gates didn't want
1476. 1:05:04to bomb Libya but it was the three
1477. 1:05:06females who overpowered and they used
1478. 1:05:09humanitarian is called right to protect
1479. 1:05:11claiming that they had to protect the
1480. 1:05:14people in Benghazi and that's why we had
1481. 1:05:16a bomb Libya it's same as bombing the
1482. 1:05:18village to save it exactly and that's
1483. 1:05:20that's very good good point about the
1484. 1:05:23moral compass yes in fall of 1999 Bill
1485. 1:05:31Clinton talks in his memoir about
1486. 1:05:33causing the him to have in December
1487. 1:05:37fearful of a bombing someplace on the
1488. 1:05:41first of the new century heaven meet
1489. 1:05:45every morning with all the century all
1490. 1:05:48the intelligence heads meet and talk to
1491. 1:05:52one another break down the walls which
1492. 1:05:56they did but a few months later on
1493. 1:06:01George Bush they had a lot of chatter on
1494. 1:06:04the internet and radio in the summer of
1495. 1:06:08wool one he was in Texas and he met once
1496. 1:06:13I think with his CIA guy but that's all
1497. 1:06:17there was no example followed on that
1498. 1:06:23point exactly that lead up to the change
1499. 1:06:27of the millennium there were a lot of
  1500. 1:06:29warnings that
1501. 1:06:30our computers would fail and that
1502. 1:06:32because of the clock and everything and
1503. 1:06:35the our FBI analysts wrote a big
1504. 1:06:37document called migite or something like
  1505. 1:06:39that I can't the title was from Israel
1506. 1:06:42but it was about fanatics that was try
1507. 1:06:46to lead a charge in Israel Megiddo was
1508. 1:06:48the title of it and it was circulated
1509. 1:06:50and there was a lot of emphasis and
1510. 1:06:53concern I I spent the night the night of
1511. 1:06:56the New Year's Eve a whole bunch of us
1512. 1:06:58were in the office at night waiting for
  1513. 1:07:00something to happen so that's exactly
1514. 1:07:03right and they caught and they caught a
1515. 1:07:05terrorists coming down from Canada that
1516. 1:07:08was going to bomb the Los Angeles
1517. 1:07:09Airport and probably they caught that
1518. 1:07:12person it was a very what astute female
1519. 1:07:17customs officer who noticed something
1520. 1:07:20wrong about the guy but maybe some of
1521. 1:07:22this this over emphasis on things
1522. 1:07:25probably was in the backdrop of her head
1523. 1:07:27and so she stops him and she finds out
  1524. 1:07:29so and you'll often find that's the case
1525. 1:07:32you know with with with detecting actual
1526. 1:07:35not fake terrorism not entrapments that
1527. 1:07:38they do they do a lot of these you know
1528. 1:07:40close to entrapping where they coerced
1529. 1:07:42vulnerable vulnerable people to you know
  1530. 1:07:45say that they're gonna press a bomb or
  1531. 1:07:47something I'm not talking about that
1532. 1:07:49the real ones that they have caught the
1533. 1:07:52shoe bomber the the air underwear bomber
1534. 1:07:55the Times Square bomber you know who
1535. 1:07:58caught them not the CIA not the NSA not
1536. 1:08:02the FBI people people caught all of
1537. 1:08:06these and so if you keep it quiet that
  1538. 1:08:10there's all this intelligence the 9/11
1539. 1:08:13Commission actually said they failed to
1540. 1:08:15share the information with the public
1541. 1:08:18you know we get we get when I was work I
1542. 1:08:21retired in 2004 but you know all the
1543. 1:08:24people that are in government get
1544. 1:08:26pressured to keep all this secret you
  1545. 1:08:28know I have friends that were
1546. 1:08:30whistleblowers that new airline security
  1547. 1:08:33was lacs
1548. 1:08:34in fact the one one of my friends Bogdan
  1549. 1:08:36the one I I co-authored WikiLeaks in
1550. 1:08:399/11 what would a thought with an FAA
1551. 1:08:42red team he was the red team leader and
1552. 1:08:46his name's Bogdan Djokovic and he found
1553. 1:08:48out that Logan Airport which is one of
1554. 1:08:51the airports that they that the
1555. 1:08:52hijackers came through will head lacs
1556. 1:08:55security they were able to smuggle
1557. 1:08:56weapons on etc etc he could not get
1558. 1:08:59anyone to listen to him about that and
1559. 1:09:01then he tried to become a whistleblower
1560. 1:09:02after 9/11 and it was totally squashed
1561. 1:09:05they put him in a you know in a closet
1562. 1:09:07counting paper clips for the rest of his
1563. 1:09:09career yeah and so he and I wrote this
1564. 1:09:12article because this is the problem the
1565. 1:09:14the the public actually needs to know
1566. 1:09:17information in order to protect itself
  1567. 1:09:20when you're trying to catch a fugitive
1568. 1:09:22there you know America's Most Wanted do
1569. 1:09:24they keep it secret when they're looking
  1570. 1:09:26for a dangerous fugitive there was a
1571. 1:09:29there was a killer that came through
  1572. 1:09:31Minnesota when I was working in 97
1573. 1:09:33called Andrew Cunanan and he was he was
1574. 1:09:36killing people he killed like four or
1575. 1:09:38five or six people and I was our office
1576. 1:09:40spokesperson on it and what did we do
1577. 1:09:44first thing that we did we got all these
1578. 1:09:46photos of him and different looking
1579. 1:09:48different things and we put it out to
1580. 1:09:50the whole country because we wanted to
1581. 1:09:52stop him and you know what keeping it
1582. 1:09:55secret wasn't going to help we had to
1583. 1:09:56have people looking for him that was the
  1584. 1:09:58whole thing up behind America's Most
1585. 1:10:00Wanted the same thing is true with with
1586. 1:10:02these warnings and stuff before the
  1587. 1:10:04millennium I think everybody was quite
1588. 1:10:06aware of that the fact that some things
1589. 1:10:08could happen and it didn't you know it
1590. 1:10:10was good that it didn't happen and then
1591. 1:10:12all of this dropped afterwards our
1592. 1:10:15acting our acting FBI director Picard
1593. 1:10:19his name was Picard and he was free
1594. 1:10:21retired in June of 2001 and then we had
1595. 1:10:24an acting director before Robert Muller
1596. 1:10:26came on one week before 9/11 so in that
1597. 1:10:29meantime of the of the key two months be
1598. 1:10:32leading up to 9/11 there was an acting
  1599. 1:10:34director Picard and in the 9/11
1600. 1:10:37Commission he testified and told them
1601. 1:10:39that he tried to get Ashcroft to be
1602. 1:10:42concerned about terrorism and Ashcroft
  1603. 1:10:45told him I don't want to hear another
  1604. 1:10:47word about terrorism and that's actually
  1605. 1:10:50in the 9/11 Commission he tried a few
1606. 1:10:52times you know to warn him and then
1607. 1:10:54Ashcroft you know just say
1608. 1:10:55want to hear about it Ashcroft in August
1609. 1:10:58placed violent crime is his number one
1610. 1:11:01priority and terrorism was almost the
1611. 1:11:03bottom of his priorities okay
1612. 1:11:08yes there was a really interesting front
1613. 1:11:11line you've probably seen it on John
1614. 1:11:14O'Neil and you mentioned connecting the
1615. 1:11:18dots well from what I saw an error he
1616. 1:11:22didn't even need the CIA he was
1617. 1:11:24connecting the dots and he had a great
1618. 1:11:26intelligence network out of Yemen
1619. 1:11:29however everything that he was doing was
1620. 1:11:32basically just squashed by Louis Freeh
1621. 1:11:34had that he had he been allowed to do
1622. 1:11:37his work that could what's your thought
  1623. 1:11:40that could have made a big difference I
  1624. 1:11:41think yeah I didn't know John O'Neill
1625. 1:11:44personally but I know of him quite well
  1626. 1:11:46and like everyone he's kind of a mixed
1627. 1:11:48bag and one of the reasons why Louis
1628. 1:11:51Freeh probably did like him or came not
1629. 1:11:55to like him and eventually forced him to
1630. 1:11:58resign he did leave his briefcase with
1631. 1:12:01classified documents in a hotel room but
1632. 1:12:03they forced him but you know what
1633. 1:12:05probably more a lot of people do that
  1634. 1:12:07and they don't have hardly minor
1635. 1:12:09punishment for something like that Louis
1636. 1:12:11Freeh forced him to resign from the FBI
1637. 1:12:14just a few weeks before 9/11 and he got
1638. 1:12:18a job as the World Trade Center security
1639. 1:12:21head and on the day of he ran back into
1640. 1:12:25the building and died it's incredible he
1641. 1:12:27was the head of the only unit in the FBI
1642. 1:12:30that was working on al-qaeda in New York
1643. 1:12:33City and I would say what probably
  1644. 1:12:35wasn't just him alone I there's a
  1645. 1:12:37there's an agent who's actually spoken
1646. 1:12:40here a couple of times once at Walter
1647. 1:12:42Mondale's Humphrey Institute his name is
1648. 1:12:45Ali su Phan and Ali sufen was you know
  1649. 1:12:49became a whistleblower because he was
1650. 1:12:51the guy who was first interviewing the
1651. 1:12:54terrorist suspects when they were caught
1652. 1:12:56he got information from them and then
1653. 1:12:58this light occurred that we have to
1654. 1:13:00start torturing the CIA but Ali Soufan
1655. 1:13:03worked on the same squad as John O'Neill
  1656. 1:13:08and and
1657. 1:13:09in Yemen it was a Lisa fine well he was
1658. 1:13:13only one of seven agents who spoke a
1659. 1:13:15little Arabic he is a Lebanese American
1660. 1:13:17and he spoke Arabic so he had almost
1661. 1:13:20solved the Cole bombing Ali sue fine and
1662. 1:13:23of course John O'Neill there was another
1663. 1:13:25agent in there by the last name of
1664. 1:13:27Cloonan but there were a few of them
1665. 1:13:29that were the only agents that really
1666. 1:13:31were working hard on al Qaeda yeah and I
1667. 1:13:35think one of the reasons that Louis
1668. 1:13:37Freeh probably made him resign was he
1669. 1:13:39didn't approve of his personal lifestyle
  1670. 1:13:42John O'Neill had a very racy personal
1671. 1:13:46with wimp womanizing and drinking and
1672. 1:13:49things like that and so there was an
1673. 1:13:51Louis Freeh was this kind of very
1674. 1:13:52squared away you know Catholic and
1675. 1:13:55whatever so you know that they had a
1676. 1:13:57difference of personalities and their
1677. 1:14:00they had had friction but going back to
1678. 1:14:03this torture thing when Ollie sufen
1679. 1:14:05realized that we were going down that
1680. 1:14:07road and we were going to start
1681. 1:14:08torturing he called back now of course
1682. 1:14:11John O'Neill was no longer there but he
1683. 1:14:13called straight to the head of the New
1684. 1:14:15York office a guy named Pat de Mauro and
1685. 1:14:18he said what is going on you know what
  1686. 1:14:21is this we're gonna go down this we're
1687. 1:14:23gonna be torturing and immoral then
1688. 1:14:25called up Muller and they decided that
1689. 1:14:27the FBI would not participate so of all
1690. 1:14:31of the agencies that went along with
1691. 1:14:32this now one of our agents stayed and
1692. 1:14:36watched it I mean some fun left he
1693. 1:14:39didn't even stay to watch it but the
1694. 1:14:41other agents stayed and you know
1695. 1:14:43witnessed it or whatever but so you know
1696. 1:14:46there were some good agents and John
1697. 1:14:48O'Neill had figured out a lot of things
1698. 1:14:50he wasn't the only one because if he had
1699. 1:14:52a good squad of people including Stefan
1700. 1:14:54that was working on it as I recall there
1701. 1:14:59was almost an attack in Paris that
  1702. 1:15:01preceded the 9/11 bombing that the
1703. 1:15:04French security people caught and
1704. 1:15:06prevented could you tell us a little bit
1705. 1:15:08more about that and then do you have a
1706. 1:15:10approximate time that that was yeah you
1707. 1:15:13know I think it was to fly in to the
  1708. 1:15:15Eiffel Tower and again the al-qaeda
1709. 1:15:18wanted to always do these dramatic
1710. 1:15:20spectacular things before they just
  1711. 1:15:22speak
1712. 1:15:22you know before it devolved into Isis
1713. 1:15:25where your beheading or whatever this
1714. 1:15:26the whole point is to grab people's
1715. 1:15:29emotions and so by having a spectacular
1716. 1:15:32thing this idea of flying into the
  1717. 1:15:34Eiffel Tower there's another one besides
1718. 1:15:36that which was the the ringleader of al
1719. 1:15:40Qaeda that planned all of this is Khalid
1720. 1:15:42Sheikh Mohammed and Khalid Sheikh
1721. 1:15:45Mohammed had a nephew by the last name
  1722. 1:15:48of hrus am am i right
1723. 1:15:51resin yeah I think it's rasam and he had
1724. 1:15:55the similar idea of flying a plane into
1725. 1:15:58CIA headquarters and these were all in
1726. 1:16:01the years you know I can't give you the
1727. 1:16:03exact thing but a couple of years before
1728. 1:16:059/11 he eventually got caught but there
  1729. 1:16:08was a plan also a plan with Khalid
1730. 1:16:10Sheikh Mohammed and his nephew to put
1731. 1:16:12bombs on like 12 airliners at the same
1732. 1:16:16time and luck by luck I think it was in
1733. 1:16:18the Philippines an apartment fire
1734. 1:16:21started and they they stopped the fire
1735. 1:16:23and they found all these plans was
1736. 1:16:26called the Bojinka conspiracy but the
1737. 1:16:29al-qaeda was planning to put bombs on 12
1738. 1:16:31airliners simultaneously as well as
1739. 1:16:34flying now I will just say one thing we
1740. 1:16:37don't know exactly what Mousawi was was
1741. 1:16:39researching but he had all of these wind
1742. 1:16:43wind patterns on his computer his laptop
  1743. 1:16:46had things like that and there's there's
  1744. 1:16:49some evidence I can't really tell you
  1745. 1:16:51place it exactly but there's some
1746. 1:16:52evidence that they were also thinking
1747. 1:16:55about flying into a nuclear plant and
  1748. 1:16:58you know I'm one I'm skeptical our
1749. 1:17:01nuclear plants tell you that that the
1750. 1:17:03concrete is so thick that even if a
1751. 1:17:06jetliner flew in it would not it would
1752. 1:17:09not go off it would not set up you know
1753. 1:17:12a nuclear chain reaction and meltdown
1754. 1:17:15and all that they say that but I am not
1755. 1:17:18so sure if a plane hitting the right
  1756. 1:17:21place in a nuclear plant and I think
1757. 1:17:24there's some evidence that that they had
1758. 1:17:25a few different plans like this and then
1759. 1:17:27they ended up doing just like the easy
1760. 1:17:30things like the underwear bomber in the
1761. 1:17:32shoe bomber those became the less
  1762. 1:17:34dramatic and
1763. 1:17:35you know unless mass mass casualties but
1764. 1:17:38still pretty still pretty significant
1765. 1:17:40and now they've gone to driving cars
1766. 1:17:43Isis just pickets rents on a truck or a
  1767. 1:17:46car and drives into a crowd and I'll
1768. 1:17:48tell you what really hard to prevent
  1769. 1:17:50somebody from renting a car a truck and
  1770. 1:17:52driving into a crowd anywhere that's the
1771. 1:17:55newest yeah I'm just trying to connect
1772. 1:17:58some of the dots of what you're saying
1773. 1:18:00and and you were talking about this
1774. 1:18:02connection between the Saudi elite and
1775. 1:18:08the Bush family and this in this whole
1776. 1:18:10reluctance to pay attention to the the
1777. 1:18:13fact that this might happen and yes and
1778. 1:18:16then the the connection to let's have
1779. 1:18:17perpetual Wars and are you really
1780. 1:18:20suggesting that there was some kind of a
1781. 1:18:23loose or a conspiracy to let this happen
1782. 1:18:27so that we could use as a pretext I'll
1783. 1:18:30go with the term that the through the
1784. 1:18:33agent in our office who testified in the
1785. 1:18:37Mousawi case he was the main witness one
1786. 1:18:40of the main witnesses his name's Harry
1787. 1:18:41salmon his name is not secret because he
1788. 1:18:44testified and he called it criminal
  1789. 1:18:47negligence is is goes I think that's the
1790. 1:18:51best way to describe what I saw
  1791. 1:18:53happening and now he's only talking
1792. 1:18:55about the Mousawi case but criminal
  1793. 1:18:56negligence and I agree I think that some
1794. 1:18:59of it was just negligent you know
1795. 1:19:01negligence by the way if you know though
1796. 1:19:03there's an attorney out here you know
1797. 1:19:06that you know if it's just failure to
1798. 1:19:10shovel your sidewalk and someone slips
1799. 1:19:13you'll be negligent and that party can
1800. 1:19:15sue you but the police won't come and
1801. 1:19:18arrest you for mere negligence
1802. 1:19:20now the other one that everybody thinks
1803. 1:19:22of is deliberate intent and deliberate
  1804. 1:19:25intent you know if it's a murder it's
1805. 1:19:27the what we think we seal the murder
  1806. 1:19:29mysteries it's always cold blooded
  1807. 1:19:31pre-planned not even passion it's always
1808. 1:19:34that other one where somebody is really
1809. 1:19:36you know trying to get the insurance
1810. 1:19:38proceeds deliberate or a real intent and
  1811. 1:19:41deliberate I think what I know about 911
1812. 1:19:44is in this middle area called
  1813. 1:19:46recklessness and that's when you should
1814. 1:19:48have been it should have been
  1815. 1:19:50foreseeable and in this case there's
1816. 1:19:52open like a lot of reasons why this was
1817. 1:19:54foreseeable and then failure to to to
1818. 1:19:58deal with it and even though it's
  1819. 1:19:59foreseeable and recklessness that's the
1820. 1:20:02same as somebody who's drunk you know
1821. 1:20:05has drunk too much and gets in their car
1822. 1:20:08and whatever they didn't intend to hit
  1823. 1:20:11somebody head-on or whatever but if
1824. 1:20:13they've got themselves so drunk and got
1825. 1:20:15in their car they're gonna be held
1826. 1:20:16guilty or you know guilty criminally for
  1827. 1:20:20recklessness and I think a lot of it
1828. 1:20:22borders on reckless you know from what I
1829. 1:20:24know and I also know that these
1830. 1:20:26motivations this like follow the money
  1831. 1:20:28but there's more than that because
  1832. 1:20:30keeping good foreign pilot good I
1833. 1:20:33shouldn't even say good but the foreign
1834. 1:20:35policy that the United States has long
1835. 1:20:37been involved in every president
1836. 1:20:39whatever is at odds with reducing
1837. 1:20:43terrorism because there are other goals
1838. 1:20:45their oil and resources and control and
1839. 1:20:49having other governments that we can
1840. 1:20:51basically you know tell them what to do
1841. 1:20:53there's all these other goals that are
1842. 1:20:55conflicting with reducing terrorism and
1843. 1:20:58I don't want to explain that but you
1844. 1:21:00know we should be able to allow to vote
1845. 1:21:01on this and say well is this what we
1846. 1:21:03want or do we want you know to reduce
1847. 1:21:05terrorism and have more peace in the
1848. 1:21:07world etc but we're not allowed where
1849. 1:21:09we're made to believe that that we're
  1850. 1:21:12reducing terrorism when we're not and
1851. 1:21:14there are and making money is another
1852. 1:21:16whole part of this the the the most of
1853. 1:21:19the officials most of the officials that
1854. 1:21:23are involved in this sure I could just
1855. 1:21:25name the whole list of these
1856. 1:21:27neoconservative Warhawks all have made
1857. 1:21:31hand-over-fist money and they go back
1858. 1:21:33and forth with Petraeus revolving door
1859. 1:21:36between these big military contractors
1860. 1:21:39and whatever and they go back and forth
  1861. 1:21:41and they're making hand-over-fist money
  1862. 1:21:43because there's no there's no limit to
1863. 1:21:45the military budget right now because
1864. 1:21:47people are scared so our Congress
1865. 1:21:49there's not even a debate when the when
1866. 1:21:51the when the trillions come up to have
1867. 1:21:54next an extra 100 billion even over what
1868. 1:21:57the Pentagon asked for and there's not
  1869. 1:21:59even a debate about it hardly a
  1870. 1:22:00bate there's like maybe a handful of
1871. 1:22:02senators and congressmen who even bring
1872. 1:22:04up the problem and the people are so
  1873. 1:22:06scared that they think it's politically
1874. 1:22:08feasible and yes a lot of people are
1875. 1:22:10making money but by the way the Pope
1876. 1:22:13said that not me that was something the
1877. 1:22:15Pope said okay so I'll make it very
1878. 1:22:19quick thanks for this great introduction
1879. 1:22:21clean but needless to say because of
1880. 1:22:22time constraints you really started the
1881. 1:22:25story at 9/11 which is appropriate you
1882. 1:22:27know being 17 years ago and I was on
1883. 1:22:29active duty at the time so if I may add
1884. 1:22:31a little bit just from my own
1885. 1:22:33perspective as that a army officer and
  1886. 1:22:35in Guantanamo defense attorney with 9/11
  1887. 1:22:39immediately in a sultan and the
1888. 1:22:41Constitution began by the Bush
1889. 1:22:42administration Cheney in the implemented
1890. 1:22:44things as you mentioned martial law
1891. 1:22:46earlier they issued an order that the
1892. 1:22:48military now has jurisdiction in the
1893. 1:22:50United States which is in effect martial
1894. 1:22:52law itself but going back before and the
1895. 1:22:54FBI came out with the intercept pointing
1896. 1:22:57out that they now a you know have
1897. 1:23:00stopped hiding the fact that the
1898. 1:23:01motivation for terrorism is our own
  1899. 1:23:04foreign policy so I'm going to ask a
1900. 1:23:06question here in a minute but just to
1901. 1:23:07point out a couple things Wesley Clark
1902. 1:23:09General Wesley Clark is on YouTube
1903. 1:23:11pointing out that we had a target list
1904. 1:23:12of seven nations that we were going to
1905. 1:23:14take down one after another and that was
  1906. 1:23:16immediately brought out upon 9/11 it
  1907. 1:23:18wasn't conceived upon 9/11 it was
1908. 1:23:20brought out it was it had been conceived
1909. 1:23:22long before by project for new American
  1910. 1:23:24Century
1911. 1:23:25this neoconservative uppered but another
1912. 1:23:27point to be made and base a has
1913. 1:23:29made this is that the Cheney doctrine
1914. 1:23:31began in 1992 which held when Cheney was
1915. 1:23:34Secretary of State he and Paul Wolfowitz
1916. 1:23:36dreamed up the scheme that with the end
1917. 1:23:38of the Cold War that the United States
1918. 1:23:39now had huge M&E over the entire world
1919. 1:23:42and they issued a paper that was leaked
1920. 1:23:44and they had to withdraw it but as the
  1921. 1:23:46co-writer of it acknowledged they didn't
1922. 1:23:49change the meaning and so as an Army
1923. 1:23:51officer I once had a paper cross my desk
  1924. 1:23:53saying it's getting there getting there
1925. 1:23:56saying that our policy and this was
1926. 1:23:57probably in 2002 before the Iraq war our
1927. 1:24:00policy as a military was to not allow
1928. 1:24:02anyone else other nation to have even
1929. 1:24:06the ability to cause us to hesitate in
  1930. 1:24:08our decision-making as a military that's
1931. 1:24:10how totalitarian it was so I guess my
  1932. 1:24:13point and I'll bring
1933. 1:24:14to a quick close is perhaps you could
1934. 1:24:15comment on the fact that we are
1935. 1:24:17perpetual war was conceived of long
  1936. 1:24:19before 9/11 by Cheney and these
1937. 1:24:22neoconservatives and now people you
1938. 1:24:25mentioned well we don't see the cost but
1939. 1:24:26we are now really singing now because we
1940. 1:24:29are cutting domestic spending to ship
1941. 1:24:30that over in the Department of Defense
  1942. 1:24:33okay
1943. 1:24:34so comment please um why people might
1944. 1:24:37want to be considering more why these
1945. 1:24:39costs when we there there there are
1946. 1:24:44costs even though the costs have been
1947. 1:24:46made invisible to Americans there are
1948. 1:24:49costs and you know there's so many we I
1949. 1:24:52don't really have time to list them but
1950. 1:24:54even for instance the mass shootings to
1951. 1:24:56be honest this this militarism to get
1952. 1:25:00people to be recruited into the military
1953. 1:25:02and you know it's like three times more
1954. 1:25:05likely than a mass shooter is military
1955. 1:25:07even the guy that shot the kid that shot
1956. 1:25:10in Florida was in the the ROTC training
1957. 1:25:13he was the marksman he was a marksman in
1958. 1:25:15the ROTC training in high school so the
1959. 1:25:18military has long recognized that video
1960. 1:25:20these violent Call of Duty but how many
1961. 1:25:23people know what I'm talking about you
1962. 1:25:24have kids I caught my 11 year old son
1963. 1:25:27after getting his Christmas money and
1964. 1:25:29he's sit in front of the screen with
  1965. 1:25:31blood
1966. 1:25:32it actually splatters blood looking
1967. 1:25:34things on the screen Call of Duty the
1968. 1:25:36Newtown shooter was a violent video game
  1969. 1:25:39addict there's a whole lot of that and
1970. 1:25:41the military this is good for recruiting
1971. 1:25:44because getting people hooked on this
1972. 1:25:46and now you say well I'm a really good
1973. 1:25:48at shooting on the screen I might as
1974. 1:25:50well go into the military and it's been
1975. 1:25:52it's become more difficult as time has
1976. 1:25:54gone on they have to offer bonuses of
1977. 1:25:58for a drone pilot who enlists they have
1978. 1:26:01to enlist for ten years but they get an
1979. 1:26:03additional bonus on top of their regular
  1980. 1:26:06really high salary of $400,000 because
  1981. 1:26:11drone piloting even though it's
1982. 1:26:14cost-free very safe for the person just
  1983. 1:26:16pressing the button it's debilitating we
1984. 1:26:20know some people who were drone in the
1985. 1:26:21drone the assassination program that
1986. 1:26:24there's movie about it actually and they
  1987. 1:26:26become do Billy
  1988. 1:26:27because what are they doing they're
1989. 1:26:29sitting there all day long looking
1990. 1:26:30through these things in and hitting
1991. 1:26:32people oh it's it's hard to keep them up
1992. 1:26:34the cost of PTSD the cost of just the
1993. 1:26:40war itself and now the the notion that
1994. 1:26:41we have to cut infrastructure you know
1995. 1:26:45social social programs and so even
  1996. 1:26:49though it's 21 trillion what's been cut
1997. 1:26:52are the social programs what isn't being
1998. 1:26:54cut is the military and that continues
1999. 1:26:56to rise and so we are really running out
2000. 1:26:59of time which is too bad I know lots of
2001. 1:27:02people have questions still perhaps
2002. 1:27:04after we formally end the program at
2003. 1:27:062:30 if you want a linger and if Coleen
2004. 1:27:09Rowley is willing to take more questions
2005. 1:27:11ok this lady gets the honor of the last
  2006. 1:27:14question you've presented us with lots
2007. 1:27:18of problems what is your solution it's
  2008. 1:27:25it's a no-brainer
2009. 1:27:27and you you see all the presidents by
  2010. 1:27:30the way this is such a no-brainer that
2011. 1:27:32the presidents after the Bush
  2012. 1:27:34administration even the Bush
  2013. 1:27:36administration - a little bit all
  2014. 1:27:37promise when they're campaigning that
2015. 1:27:40they're going to reduce military
  2016. 1:27:42spending and they're going to Obama
2017. 1:27:45promised to end the Iraq war he promised
2018. 1:27:47to close Guantanamo Trump promised that
2019. 1:27:50he would get a side of Syria
2020. 1:27:52so it's a no brainer this has to be
2021. 1:27:54reduced we're kind of doing this Empire
2022. 1:27:56thing which is exactly what the Soviet
2023. 1:27:58Union dead and and this is one of the
2024. 1:28:01reasons why in all empires all empires
2025. 1:28:03they first of all they when they get so
2026. 1:28:05overextended they rot from the inside
2027. 1:28:07that's some of the problem right now and
2028. 1:28:09they are they are caught up in this
2029. 1:28:13expensive effort to control too much
2030. 1:28:16territory and too much land so you
2031. 1:28:18should learn the lesson of history Reid
2032. 1:28:21Andrew bacevich it's not hard these are
2033. 1:28:23not hard solutions but you have for
2034. 1:28:25instance martial law this has to be
2035. 1:28:27rescinded somebody has to go back the
2036. 1:28:30only memo that I know that was rescinded
2037. 1:28:31was the final torture memo of John you
2038. 1:28:34all the other memos are horrible - but
2039. 1:28:37the ACLU ran out of energy and you know
  2040. 1:28:40and so those
2041. 1:28:41all be looked at and most of them should
2042. 1:28:43be rescinded when they start saying the
2043. 1:28:45Constitution is now we're in war and the
2044. 1:28:48president has all power during a time of
2045. 1:28:50war etc all of those should be turned
2046. 1:28:54back in you can go right down the list
2047. 1:28:56with war powers and all the rest and you
2048. 1:28:59know maybe not overnight but little by
2049. 1:29:01little we could get back to normal if we
2050. 1:29:03did this we are not doomed to now going
  2051. 1:29:06to a nuclear confrontation with Russia
  2052. 1:29:08and China for heaven's sakes and that's
2053. 1:29:10what it's looking like thank you very
2054. 1:29:18much Coleen Rowley as I say if you do
2055. 1:29:22have additional questions and miss
2056. 1:29:24Rowley is able to stay please I'm sorry
2057. 1:29:27we didn't get to as many questions as
2058. 1:29:29I'd like to and come back next week for
  2059. 1:29:32the Constitution as a historical
  2060. 1:29:35document thank you
  2061. 1:29:45you
