1. 0:00hi Matt I'm transgender I'm born and
2. 0:04raised here in New Mexico I have a
3. 0:06graduate degree in information
4. 0:08technology marketing business and
5. 0:10finance I own my own home I pay taxes I
6. 0:16have a six-figure job I'm a respected
7. 0:19professional in Albuquerque I'm a mother
8. 0:22uh
9. 0:24my life experience is that I'm an
10. 0:28awesome person I am well liked I'm
11. 0:32responsible and
12. 0:34I think I'm pretty cool
13. 0:36uh you touched on something you said
14. 0:39something earlier that for you and
15. 0:41somebody calls you a man it doesn't
16. 0:43phase you because like you just know
17. 0:46that you're a man uh
18. 0:48that was interesting to me because I
19. 0:50feel the same way about my identity as a
20. 0:52woman
21. 0:54my question leading up to this
22. 0:56you've asserted that no one would ever
23. 0:59see me as a woman
24. 1:02that
25. 1:04nobody would ever see or could see a
26. 1:06transgender person as a woman and yet
27. 1:10I have
28. 1:12dozens of friends from diverse
29. 1:15backgrounds women from the reservation a
30. 1:18woman from Japan uh several immigrant
31. 1:21women I have my co-workers I have my
32. 1:24boss my VP my CEO all respecting me as a
33. 1:29woman uh my family my long-term friends
34. 1:32who are actually here with me
35. 1:35I all of these people assure me
36. 1:40like
37. 1:41I'm a woman they'll tell me girl like
38. 1:44there is no way you're a man they see me
39. 1:47as a woman so the question okay how can
40. 1:51you assert
41. 1:52that nobody would ever see me as a woman
42. 1:55when my material experience tells me
43. 1:58you're wrong okay it's interesting that
44. 2:01that's the part of my talk you chose to
45. 2:03ask a question about because that's not
46. 2:04in my talk at all
47. 2:06um I don't believe I said that no one
48. 2:07would ever see you as a woman I mean
49. 2:09it's possible I suppose that you could
50. 2:12fool someone now you brought this up so
51. 2:14I have to tell you that uh you brought
52. 2:16this up you've put your identity on the
53. 2:18table for conversation and so I'm going
54. 2:20to say you you wouldn't fool me at all I
55. 2:22mean I see a man 100 and I think that
56. 2:25most people would now the the fact the
57. 2:28fact that you have people in your life
58. 2:29who are saying to you oh you're totally
59. 2:31a woman it's exactly what I'm talking
60. 2:33about no one in my life has ever once
61. 2:37said to me
62. 2:38you're totally a man Matt you know if my
63. 2:41if if if if a friend of mine called me
64. 2:43on the phone and said listen Matt I want
65. 2:45you to know
66. 2:45you're really a man
67. 2:48I would think that there was something
68. 2:49wrong with him I would say why are you
69. 2:51saying that at all doesn't make any
70. 2:52sense so the fact this is a conversation
71. 2:54to begin with tells me it only it only
72. 2:56proves the point that I'm trying to make
73. 2:57that that your identity even in your own
74. 2:59mind is up for is something that you
75. 3:01need to be assured of now what I what I
76. 3:03would like to ask you again because
77. 3:04you're standing here and and so
78. 3:07uh you've brought your identity and on
79. 3:10the table for discussion so uh how did
80. 3:13you how do you know that you're a woman
81. 3:16uh it was first when I heard transgender
82. 3:19persons describe their experience in
83. 3:21their own words and this was only about
84. 3:24two years ago uh hearing somebody
85. 3:28describe things it was a woman from like
86. 3:31England describing her experience her
87. 3:34childhood uh her teenage years
88. 3:37and it blew my mind to be listening to
89. 3:41her because it was just some podcast
90. 3:43that I was listening to while I was like
91. 3:45doing laundry
92. 3:46but it blew my mind to hear somebody so
93. 3:50eloquently and precisely describe things
94. 3:53that I had experiences
95. 3:56what did they say
96. 3:59um Okay so
97. 4:04I am honestly hesitant I know that you
98. 4:07touched earlier about the difficulty
99. 4:08that transgender women might have in
100. 4:10describing their identity but I want to
101. 4:12state
102. 4:14I honestly don't feel that you would
103. 4:15engage in this conversation in good
104. 4:17faith
105. 4:18so why are you here why did you stand up
106. 4:21to talk to me if you don't want to have
107. 4:22a conversation
108. 4:24you're saying that you discover that
109. 4:26you're a woman I'm asking you how you
110. 4:27did that's a very fair question okay how
111. 4:29do you know that you're a woman that's
112. 4:31fine
113. 4:32all right so first of all listening to
114. 4:34transgender people and it was like okay
115. 4:36this is a one-off you know one person
116. 4:39describing these things
117. 4:41um things like looking at yourself in
118. 4:42the mirror and not recognizing yourself
119. 4:44uh hearing compliments like you are such
120. 4:46an example like a positive masculine
121. 4:49role model and just hearing that and
122. 4:51being like you know it feels like
123. 4:52they're talking about somebody else
124. 4:55um it means feeling alone even when
125. 4:57you're surrounded by guys even when you
126. 4:59have a lot of friends and I was active
127. 5:01in like Boy Scouts I'm an eagle scout I
128. 5:04had great masculine Role Models my whole
129. 5:06life and yet I never felt
130. 5:09like I belonged I felt welcome and why
131. 5:13does that make you a woman
132. 5:14as opposed to just a man who doesn't get
133. 5:17along with some other men or a man who's
134. 5:19who's depressed or a man who doesn't
135. 5:22feel at home totally in his body which
136. 5:23by the way is a is a pretty Universal
137. 5:25Human Experience everybody goes through
138. 5:27it one time and another so so in what
139. 5:28way does that make you a woman though
140. 5:31it's interesting you're telling me that
141. 5:33you listen to the experience of other
142. 5:34transgender people well yeah but what
143. 5:37about women
144. 5:38so you're because you are trans women
145. 5:41are women you would say right I would
146. 5:43say that yeah exactly the same yes okay
147. 5:45well then why do you need to hear the
148. 5:46testimony of trans quote unquote trans
149. 5:48women like how how you pick any actual
150. 5:52woman in this room
151. 5:53in what way do you know that you belong
152. 5:55in the same category as them
153. 5:57uh I know because they tell me so here
154. 6:01was the you need them to tell you what
155. 6:02you are women
156. 6:05yes I trust the opinions of the women
157. 6:07around and it's mostly it's incredible
158. 6:09you might try it if most women voted and
159. 6:11said they don't see you as a woman would
160. 6:12you say I'm not a woman anymore
161. 6:14if who if most women voted and said they
162. 6:16don't see you as a woman anymore would
163. 6:18you then relent and say I'm not a woman
164. 6:20I would say most people on the planet
165. 6:22have no idea who I am I'm gonna trust
166. 6:24the opinions of the people who've spent
167. 6:25their lives with me
168. 6:27so you but you are relying on other
169. 6:29people to tell you who you are is what
170. 6:30we're establishing
171. 6:32for context I know you would like to
172. 6:35think I know you like to say
173. 6:37um
174. 6:38I know you like to say uh everybody's
175. 6:42raw rawing and supporting transgender
176. 6:44people and yet they're still killing
177. 6:45themselves Etc
178. 6:47um but I'm standing here in a room full
179. 6:49of people applauding you and asking
180. 6:52questions like how can I like put out
181. 6:54legislation here in New Mexico you know
182. 6:56my home state I grew up in to try to
183. 6:58reverse transgenderism like
184. 7:02I'm not safe
185. 7:04and it's not safe you just said you're
186. 7:07standing in a room people disagree with
187. 7:08you and you're perfectly fine so how are
188. 7:09you not safe
189. 7:11like okay look we're going round around
190. 7:13you you don't want to answer any of the
191. 7:15questions maybe we'll just we'll end
192. 7:17with this because we're talking about
193. 7:18Womanhood
194. 7:19so people could probably shout out the
195. 7:20question I'm going to ask you right now
196. 7:22okay but uh you know that you're a woman
197. 7:24yes
198. 7:26what is that
199. 7:28I
200. 7:31so gender is a social thing it only
201. 7:34makes sense what is a woman what is a
202. 7:37woman what is a woman word woman defined
203. 7:39in the dictionary go
204. 7:41a woman is somebody who is included and
205. 7:44respected and seen and participates in
206. 7:46society recognized by other women if you
207. 7:49speak with women
208. 7:52circular definition that's mine whatever
