  1. 0:01A boot drove into a man's ribs.
  2. 0:04He folded against the fence post, arms
  3. 0:06yanked back, wrists lashed tight to the
  4. 0:09wood.
  5. 0:11Another kick landed.
  6. 0:13Then another.
  7. 0:15Blood ran from his mouth down into the
  8. 0:17mud.
  9. 0:19A truck door slammed.
  10. 0:22Gravel spat under the tires as the
  11. 0:24headlights swung away and left him there
  12. 0:26in the rain.
  13. 0:2810 ft off, a dog strained against a
  14. 0:31chain, teeth bared, throat raw from
  15. 0:33barking.
  16. 0:35Nobody came.
  17. 0:37Nobody in that town would come.
  18. 0:41Everybody knew whose blood that was.
  19. 0:44His name was Hollis Rourke.
  20. 0:47They called him Deacon, president of the
  21. 0:49Kern County Diablos, and the men who
  22. 0:52tied him to that post wanted the whole
  23. 0:55county to see what a beaten man looked
  24. 0:57like.
  25. 0:58But one person stopped that night.
  26. 1:02A woman with every reason to keep
  27. 1:04driving.
  28. 1:05Why did she get out of the car?
  29. 1:08Stay with me on this one.
  30. 1:11Marlene Sudeck had worked a double that
  31. 1:13day, and her feet told her about it the
  32. 1:16whole drive home.
  33. 1:1814 hours at the Iron Skillet, a low
  34. 1:21diner off Route 9 with a buzzing sign
  35. 1:24and cracked vinyl booths.
  36. 1:27She had refilled coffee for truckers who
  37. 1:29never tipped and cleaned up after a
  38. 1:32kid's birthday that nobody helped clean.
  39. 1:36Her apron pocket held $41 in ones and a
  40. 1:39couple of fives.
  41. 1:42That was a good night.
  42. 1:44That was rent, split into little green
  43. 1:47pieces.
  44. 1:49She was 53.
  45. 1:51She had a bad knee and a good heart, and
  46. 1:54around Bakersfield, those two things did
  47. 1:56not add up to much.
  48. 1:59Her husband had been gone 6 years.
  49. 2:02Her boy was grown and in Reno and did
  50. 2:05not call.
  51. 2:06What she had was the diner and Sal who
  52. 2:09owned it and a routine that never
  53. 2:11changed.
  54. 2:13Get there before dawn.
  55. 2:16Leave after dark.
  56. 2:18Smile at people who did not see her.
  57. 2:21Here is the thing about Marlene.
  58. 2:24She was the kind of person who noticed.
  59. 2:28She noticed when a trucker sat alone and
  60. 2:30stared at his hands. So, she brought him
  61. 2:33pie he had not ordered and did not
  62. 2:35charge him.
  63. 2:37She noticed when the bus boy came in
  64. 2:39with a split lip and did not ask, just
  65. 2:42slid him the good gloves from the lost
  66. 2:44and found.
  67. 2:46People like that get walked on.
  68. 2:49Everybody figures somebody so soft must
  69. 2:52be soft in the head, too.
  70. 2:55She was not.
  71. 2:57She just decided a long time ago that
  72. 2:59being decent cost her nothing she could
  73. 3:02not spare.
  74. 3:04Lately, though, the diner had been
  75. 3:06bleeding.
  76. 3:08Sal had gone quiet and gray.
  77. 3:11The suppliers wanted cash up front.
  78. 3:14And there was a trucking outfit that ran
  79. 3:16the freight lane out there, Cutter
  80. 3:18Haulage, that had its hooks in half the
  81. 3:21businesses on Route 9.
  82. 3:24They called it a service fee.
  83. 3:27Pay us and your deliveries show up clean
  84. 3:29and on time.
  85. 3:31Do not pay us and your milk sits in a
  86. 3:34hot yard till it turns.
  87. 3:37Sal had stopped fighting it months back.
  88. 3:40He just paid.
  89. 3:42What Marlene knew and did not say out
  90. 3:44loud was that Cutter had started
  91. 3:47skimming her, too.
  92. 3:49Her checks came up short.
  93. 3:52An hour here,
  94. 3:54a whole shift there.
  95. 3:56When she asked, the manager Dell Cutter
  96. 3:59smiled with all his teeth and said the
  97. 4:01computer must have glitched and he would
  98. 4:04fix it and he never did.
  99. 4:07$40 was rent to her.
  100. 4:10To him, it was a joke he told with his
  101. 4:12eyes.
  102. 4:14She swallowed it because she needed the
  103. 4:16job and because a woman her age with a
  104. 4:19bad knee did not have three offers
  105. 4:22waiting.
  106. 4:23That rainy night, she took the shortcut
  107. 4:26she always took.
  108. 4:28Behind the shuttered feed store, across
  109. 4:30the gravel lot, past the broken fence
  110. 4:33that saved her 4 minutes and a stretch
  111. 4:36of highway with no shoulder.
  112. 4:39Her wipers could barely keep up.
  113. 4:42Her headlights swept the lot and that
  114. 4:44was when she saw the shape.
  115. 4:47At first, she thought it was trash.
  116. 4:50A dumped coat, maybe a sack.
  117. 4:53Then it moved.
  118. 4:55Then her lights caught the chain and the
  119. 4:57dog and the man slumped against the post
  120. 5:00with his head hanging and his arms
  121. 5:03pulled back like something on a
  122. 5:04butcher's hook.
  123. 5:06She hit the brakes.
  124. 5:09The car slid a foot on the wet gravel
  125. 5:11and stopped.
  126. 5:13Every part of her, the smart part, the
  127. 5:16tired part, the part that had learned
  128. 5:18the hard way that trouble in this town
  129. 5:20has friends, told her to drive on.
  130. 5:24This was biker business.
  131. 5:27This was the kind of thing you did not
  132. 5:28see so that later nobody could ask you
  133. 5:32what you saw.
  134. 5:34She sat there with her hands on the
  135. 5:35wheel and the rain drumming the roof and
  136. 5:38the man lifted his head an inch and
  137. 5:41looked right into her headlights.
  138. 5:44And she could not do it.
  139. 5:46She could not drive away from a hurt
  140. 5:48thing.
  141. 5:50She never could.
  142. 5:52So, she killed the engine and she got
  143. 5:55out into the rain.
  144. 5:57The dog went insane.
  145. 6:0090 lb of German Shepherd, hackles up,
  146. 6:03lunging to the end of its chain so hard
  147. 6:06the post shook.
  148. 6:08Its bark was not a warning anymore.
  149. 6:11It was a scream.
  150. 6:13Marlene froze with the rain running down
  151. 6:16her collar.
  152. 6:18One more step and those teeth would be
  153. 6:20in her leg, bad knee and all, and nobody
  154. 6:23would find her till the sun came up.
  155. 6:27"Easy," she said.
  156. 6:29Not loud.
  157. 6:31The way she talked to the busboy when
  158. 6:33his hands shook.
  159. 6:35"Easy now.
  160. 6:37I'm not here for him.
  161. 6:39I'm here for both of you."
  162. 6:42The man's voice came out wet and broken.
  163. 6:46"Don't.
  164. 6:47He'll take your arm off."
  165. 6:50"Then call him off."
  166. 6:52"He won't listen.
  167. 6:54Not tonight."
  168. 6:56A cough and more blood.
  169. 6:59"Just go, lady.
  170. 7:01You didn't see anything.
  171. 7:04Go home."
  172. 7:06But Marlene had already crouched, slow,
  173. 7:09getting small, turning her side to the
  174. 7:11dog the way her father taught her 60
  175. 7:14years back on a farm outside Fresno.
  176. 7:18She did not stare it down.
  177. 7:21She looked at the mud.
  178. 7:23She talked low and steady about nothing
  179. 7:25at all, about the rain, about how cold
  180. 7:29it was, about how she had pie in the
  181. 7:31car, which was a lie, and somewhere in
  182. 7:34that river of soft nonsense, the dog's
  183. 7:37bark cracked and turned into a whine.
  184. 7:40Its tail was still down,
  185. 7:43but it had stopped lunging.
  186. 7:46It was listening.
  187. 7:48"There," she whispered.
  188. 7:50"There you go.
  189. 7:52You're just scared.
  190. 7:54Me, too."
  191. 7:56It took 10 minutes on her knees in the
  192. 7:58freezing mud.
  193. 8:0110 minutes of talk, of the back of her
  194. 8:03hand held out, of not flinching when the
  195. 8:06teeth came close and did not close.
  196. 8:10When the shepherd finally pressed its
  197. 8:11wet nose into her palm and let out a
  198. 8:14shudder that ran the whole length of its
  199. 8:16body, she nearly cried.
  200. 8:19She unclipped the chain from the post.
  201. 8:23The dog did not run.
  202. 8:25It planted itself between her and the
  203. 8:27dark and stood guard, and she understood
  204. 8:30then that it had never been guarding the
  205. 8:32man from her.
  206. 8:34It had been guarding him from whoever
  207. 8:36came next.
  208. 8:38The man was worse up close.
  209. 8:41One eye swollen shut.
  210. 8:44Ribs that made a wrong sound when he
  211. 8:46breathed.
  212. 8:47The ropes on his wrists were pulled so
  213. 8:50tight his hands had gone the color of a
  214. 8:52plum.
  215. 8:54She dug in her pocket, past the $41, and
  216. 8:58came out with her car key.
  217. 9:00The old kind, cut steel with a real
  218. 9:03edge.
  219. 9:05She started sawing.
  220. 9:07"Who are you?" he said.
  221. 9:10It was not really a question.
  222. 9:12He was trying to stay awake.
  223. 9:15"Nobody," she said, working the key back
  224. 9:18and forth.
  225. 9:19I pour coffee.
  226. 9:22Why are you doing this?"
  227. 9:24She stopped for half a second and looked
  228. 9:26at his ruined face.
  229. 9:29"Because you're a person," she said,
  230. 9:31"and somebody left you in the rain."
  231. 9:34The last rope gave.
  232. 9:37His arms dropped and he groaned like the
  233. 9:39pain of them coming loose was worse than
  234. 9:42the beating.
  235. 9:44She got under his shoulder.
  236. 9:46He was enormous, dead weight, military
  237. 9:50big through the chest, and she was a
  238. 9:5253-year-old waitress with a bad knee.
  239. 9:56And somehow the two of them and the dog
  240. 9:58crossed that lot inch by inch and folded
  241. 10:01into her old sedan.
  242. 10:03She did not ask where the men went.
  243. 10:06She did not ask why.
  244. 10:09She drove.
  245. 10:11She did not take him to a hospital.
  246. 10:14Even half dead, he was clear about that,
  247. 10:17gripping her arm, saying no cops, no
  248. 10:20hospital, please, a name and an address
  249. 10:23instead, a place up in the foothills.
  250. 10:26So, she drove him there through the rain
  251. 10:28with the dog's head on her shoulder from
  252. 10:30the back seat. And when the gate opened
  253. 10:33and the porch lights hit her windshield,
  254. 10:36there were suddenly a lot of men.
  255. 10:39Big men.
  256. 10:41Leather and beards and hard faces coming
  257. 10:44fast at the car.
  258. 10:46And Marlene, who should have been
  259. 10:48terrified, rolled down her window and
  260. 10:50said, "He needs a doctor.
  261. 10:53His ribs are wrong.
  262. 10:56Careful with him. He's hurt worse than
  263. 10:58he'll say."
  264. 11:00They lifted him out like he was made of
  265. 11:02glass.
  266. 11:04A woman came running with a bag.
  267. 11:07Somebody took the dog and the dog let
  268. 11:10them.
  269. 11:11And a huge old man with a white beard,
  270. 11:14the kind of man rooms go quiet for, put
  271. 11:17his hand on the roof of her car and
  272. 11:19looked at her a long moment.
  273. 11:22"You brought him home," he said.
  274. 11:25"He was tied to a post.
  275. 11:28You know who these men are?
  276. 11:30The ones who did it.
  277. 11:33No, she said.
  278. 11:35I just knew he was hurt.
  279. 11:38She was already putting the car in
  280. 11:40reverse because it was late and she had
  281. 11:42a shift at 5:00 and this was not her
  282. 11:45world.
  283. 11:47Take good care of that dog.
  284. 11:49He's a brave one.
  285. 11:52She drove back down the mountain.
  286. 11:55She let herself into her cold little
  287. 11:57apartment.
  288. 11:59She peeled off her soaked clothes and
  289. 12:01stood under the shower till the water
  290. 12:03went lukewarm.
  291. 12:06Then she made tea and she sat at her
  292. 12:08kitchen table with her hands around the
  293. 12:10cup and she told herself it was over.
  294. 12:14A strange night.
  295. 12:16A hurt man delivered to his people.
  296. 12:20Nothing to do with her.
  297. 12:22In 6 hours, she would be pouring coffee
  298. 12:25like always and none of it would follow
  299. 12:27her home.
  300. 12:29She actually believed that.
  301. 12:32She finished her tea and went to bed and
  302. 12:35for a few hours she slept.
  303. 12:38The knock came at 4:00 in the morning.
  304. 12:41Not a normal knock.
  305. 12:43A fist flat and heavy three times on her
  306. 12:46door, the kind of knock that is not
  307. 12:48asking.
  308. 12:50Marlene came awake with her heart
  309. 12:52slamming.
  310. 12:54She pulled on a robe and looked through
  311. 12:55the peephole and her stomach dropped.
  312. 12:59It was Dale Cutter.
  313. 13:01The manager who skimmed her checks.
  314. 13:04And behind him, two of his men from the
  315. 13:07yard.
  316. 13:08She did not open the door.
  317. 13:11It's 4:00 in the morning, she called
  318. 13:13through it keeping her voice level.
  319. 13:17Open up, Marlene.
  320. 13:19We just want to talk.
  321. 13:21Then talk from there.
  322. 13:24A pause.
  323. 13:26Then Cutter's voice came the wood, and
  324. 13:29all the fake friendliness was gone from
  325. 13:31it.
  326. 13:32You were out on Route 9 last night.
  327. 13:36Behind the feed store.
  328. 13:38Somebody saw your car.
  329. 13:41Another pause.
  330. 13:43There was a man tied up out there.
  331. 13:46He's not there anymore.
  332. 13:49You want to tell me how that happened?
  333. 13:52And just like that, the shape of
  334. 13:54everything changed.
  335. 13:56This was not about a short paycheck now.
  336. 14:00The men who left Deacon on that post
  337. 14:02were the same men who signed her checks.
  338. 14:05Cutter Hallage had done it.
  339. 14:08And Marlene had undone it.
  340. 14:11She had reached into the middle of a war
  341. 14:13she never knew she was standing in, and
  342. 14:16both sides now knew her name.
  343. 14:19"I don't know what you're talking
  344. 14:20about," she said, and hated how thin it
  345. 14:23came out.
  346. 14:25"See, I think you do."
  347. 14:27A soft laugh through the door, which was
  348. 14:30worse than shouting.
  349. 14:32"Here's how it's going to go.
  350. 14:35That biker's people are going to come
  351. 14:37asking who put him out there.
  352. 14:40When they do, you never saw a truck.
  353. 14:43You never saw a face.
  354. 14:46You found him alone, and you don't know
  355. 14:48a thing.
  356. 14:50You forget the name Cutter, like you
  357. 14:52forgot it on all those short checks.
  358. 14:55You've been real good at forgetting,
  359. 14:57Marlene.
  360. 14:58Keep it up."
  361. 15:00His knuckles rapped the door once more,
  362. 15:03gentle now, almost fond.
  363. 15:06"You've got a boy in Reno, don't you?
  364. 15:09Be a shame if forgetting got hard for
  365. 15:11you."
  366. 15:13Then they were gone.
  367. 15:15Boots down the stairs.
  368. 15:18A truck starting.
  369. 15:20Marlene stood in her dark hallway with
  370. 15:22her back against the wall and her heart
  371. 15:25going like a rabbit's and she understood
  372. 15:27she was not a bystander anymore.
  373. 15:31She was a witness.
  374. 15:33And in that town, witnesses to Cutter
  375. 15:36Haulage did not stay healthy.
  376. 15:39She did not sleep again.
  377. 15:41She went to work at 5:00 because if she
  378. 15:43did not, they would know she was scared
  379. 15:46and scared people get pushed.
  380. 15:49She poured coffee with shaking hands and
  381. 15:52burned herself twice on the pot.
  382. 15:55Sal took one look at her and pulled her
  383. 15:58into the back by the walk-in.
  384. 16:01"What's wrong with you?" he said.
  385. 16:03"You look like you saw a ghost."
  386. 16:06She almost told him.
  387. 16:09Then she looked at Sal, 68 and paying
  388. 16:12Cutter's fee every month, ulcer eating
  389. 16:15him alive, and she knew that whatever
  390. 16:17she carried, she could not lay it on
  391. 16:19him.
  392. 16:21"Just tired." she said.
  393. 16:23"Long night."
  394. 16:25By 9:00 the diner filled up.
  395. 16:28And at 9:15, the bell over the door rang
  396. 16:32and two men from the Cutter yard walked
  397. 16:34in and took the corner booth.
  398. 16:37They did not order.
  399. 16:39They just sat and they watched her and
  400. 16:42every time she looked up they were
  401. 16:43looking back.
  402. 16:45It was a message and she got it.
  403. 16:48"We are always here.
  404. 16:51We are always watching.
  405. 16:54You belong to us and you will keep your
  406. 16:56mouth shut or your boy in Reno gets a
  407. 16:59visit."
  408. 17:00Marlene kept pouring coffee.
  409. 17:03She kept her chin up.
  410. 17:06But under the apron her hands would not
  411. 17:08stop trembling and for the first time in
  412. 17:10her decent, invisible life, she was
  413. 17:14truly afraid of what tomorrow would
  414. 17:16bring.
  415. 17:17She got through the shift.
  416. 17:20She always got through the shift.
  417. 17:23That was the one thing she knew how to
  418. 17:25do, put one foot down and then the
  419. 17:27other, whether her knee liked it or not.
  420. 17:31When the corner booth finally cleared
  421. 17:33out around noon, the two men left a
  422. 17:36folded napkin on the table with no money
  423. 17:39under it. And on the napkin somebody had
  424. 17:42drawn a little house with a line through
  425. 17:44it.
  426. 17:45She threw it in the trash without
  427. 17:47letting her face move.
  428. 17:50But she saw it.
  429. 17:52And they meant her, too.
  430. 17:54That afternoon, a different vehicle
  431. 17:57pulled into the gravel lot.
  432. 18:00Not a truck.
  433. 18:02A motorcycle, low and black, and then
  434. 18:04two more behind it.
  435. 18:07Marlene's stomach clenched.
  436. 18:09The whole diner went still, forks down,
  437. 18:12nobody chewing.
  438. 18:14Three bikers came through the door, and
  439. 18:17the biggest of them, a slab of a man
  440. 18:19with a gray beard and a patch that said
  441. 18:22sergeant, scanned the room until his
  442. 18:24eyes found her.
  443. 18:26He walked straight to her.
  444. 18:29The room held its breath.
  445. 18:31"You Marlene?" he said.
  446. 18:34She set down the coffee pot so she would
  447. 18:36not drop it.
  448. 18:38"I am."
  449. 18:40"Deacon wants to see you."
  450. 18:43He must have watched the fear cross her
  451. 18:45face because his own softened by a hair.
  452. 18:49"Not like that, ma'am.
  453. 18:52He's alive because of you.
  454. 18:54He don't forget a thing like that.
  455. 18:57He just wants to say it to your face."
  456. 19:01He glanced around the frozen diner, at
  457. 19:03the truckers, at Sal White behind the
  458. 19:06register.
  459. 19:08"Whenever your shift's done,
  460. 19:11no rush.
  461. 19:13We'll wait outside so we don't scare
  462. 19:15your customers.
  463. 19:17And they did.
  464. 19:19Three of the most feared men in the
  465. 19:21county stood in the rain by their bikes
  466. 19:23for two hours until Marlene hung up her
  467. 19:26apron
  468. 19:27because the man they answered to had
  469. 19:29told them to treat her gentle.
  470. 19:32When she finally came out, the sergeant
  471. 19:34held a spare helmet out to her and then
  472. 19:37thought better of it and just said,
  473. 19:39"Follow us in your car.
  474. 19:42Easier on your knee."
  475. 19:44She had not told anyone about her knee.
  476. 19:48Deacon had.
  477. 19:50He had remembered a woman who limped
  478. 19:52through freezing mud to save a stranger
  479. 19:55and he had told his men to mind it.
  480. 19:58And something in Marlene's chest, which
  481. 20:01had been clenched tight as a fist since
  482. 20:034:00 that morning, loosened just a
  483. 20:05little.
  484. 20:07If you have made it this far with me,
  485. 20:09take 1 second and hit that subscribe
  486. 20:11button because what Deacon did next is
  487. 20:15the reason I wanted to tell you this
  488. 20:16story at all.
  489. 20:18Now stay with me
  490. 20:21because it turns
  491. 20:23they took her up the mountain to the
  492. 20:25same gate.
  493. 20:27Deacon was propped in a chair on the
  494. 20:28porch, ribs taped, one eye still black,
  495. 20:32the shepherd Bruno flat across his
  496. 20:34boots.
  497. 20:36When he saw Marlene, he tried to stand
  498. 20:39and three men moved to stop him and he
  499. 20:41waved them all off and stood anyway,
  500. 20:44swaying, because he would greet the
  501. 20:46woman who saved him on his feet or not
  502. 20:48at all.
  503. 20:50"Sit down before you fall down."
  504. 20:53Marlene said in the same voice she used
  505. 20:56on the dog and Deacon actually laughed
  506. 20:59and then winced because laughing hurt.
  507. 21:03"There she is," he said.
  508. 21:05"The coffee lady."
  509. 21:08He lowered himself back down.
  510. 21:11You know I had men out looking for you
  511. 21:13since sunup.
  512. 21:15You didn't leave a name.
  513. 21:17Didn't leave a plate I could read.
  514. 21:20You saved my life and my dog and you
  515. 21:23just drove off into the rain like it was
  516. 21:25nothing.
  517. 21:27He shook his head slowly.
  518. 21:3050 years I've been riding.
  519. 21:33I have never in my life seen anybody do
  520. 21:36what you did.
  521. 21:38Walk up to a dog like Bruno with a 100
  522. 21:41lb of mean in him.
  523. 21:43Cut a man loose you had every reason to
  524. 21:46leave.
  525. 21:47Why?
  526. 21:49I told you why.
  527. 21:51Somebody left you in the rain.
  528. 21:54He looked at her for a long time.
  529. 21:57Then he said quiet, the men who left me
  530. 22:00there.
  531. 22:02I know who they are.
  532. 22:04I've known since I hit the mud.
  533. 22:07Cutter Haulage.
  534. 22:09Del Cutter and his boys.
  535. 22:12They've been muscling into our freight
  536. 22:14lane for a year and two nights back they
  537. 22:16thought they'd end it by ending me.
  538. 22:20Show the whole county the Diablos bleed.
  539. 22:23His jaw tightened.
  540. 22:25They almost got it right.
  541. 22:28Marlene's mouth went dry.
  542. 22:31Deacon, she said.
  543. 22:33There's something you don't know.
  544. 22:36And she told him.
  545. 22:39All of it.
  546. 22:40The short checks.
  547. 22:43The service fee choking Sal.
  548. 22:46The 4:00 a.m. knock.
  549. 22:48The threat against her boy in Reno.
  550. 22:52The two men in the corner booth.
  551. 22:55The napkin with the little house crossed
  552. 22:57out.
  553. 22:58She had not planned to tell him.
  554. 23:01It just came out of her. All the fear
  555. 23:04she had been swallowing for months
  556. 23:06because for the first time somebody was
  557. 23:08looking at her like her fear mattered.
  558. 23:11When she finished, the porch was dead
  559. 23:13silent.
  560. 23:15Even Bruno had lifted his head.
  561. 23:19Deacon sat very still and the color came
  562. 23:21up his neck slow and dark and when he
  563. 23:24finally spoke his voice was so calm it
  564. 23:27was frightening.
  565. 23:29Let me make sure I heard you, he said.
  566. 23:32The same men who tied me to that post.
  567. 23:36The men you cut me loose from.
  568. 23:39They've been stealing the wages out of
  569. 23:41your pocket.
  570. 23:43Threatening a good man's diner.
  571. 23:46And this morning they stood on your
  572. 23:47doorstep and put your son's name in
  573. 23:50their mouth.
  574. 23:52He nodded slowly to himself.
  575. 23:55To scare you into forgetting you saved
  576. 23:57me.
  577. 23:58I don't want trouble.
  578. 24:01Marlene said quickly.
  579. 24:03I just want to keep my job.
  580. 24:06I shouldn't have said anything.
  581. 24:09No.
  582. 24:10Deacon reached out and took her hand in
  583. 24:12both of his. Big and battered and
  584. 24:15gentle.
  585. 24:17You did exactly right.
  586. 24:19You've been carrying this by yourself
  587. 24:22and you were never by yourself.
  588. 24:25You just didn't know it yet.
  589. 24:28He looked past her at his sergeant.
  590. 24:31Get the officers up here tonight.
  591. 24:34All of them.
  592. 24:36Then back to Marlene and his ruined face
  593. 24:39did something that was almost a smile.
  594. 24:42You went out of your way for a stranger
  595. 24:44in the rain.
  596. 24:46Now it's my turn.
  597. 24:49You go home.
  598. 24:51Lock your door.
  599. 24:53Sleep.
  600. 24:55Nobody is going to touch you or your boy
  601. 24:58or that diner ever again.
  602. 25:00That's not a hope, ma'am.
  603. 25:03That's a promise from me, and I have
  604. 25:05never once broken one.
  605. 25:08She did not fully believe him.
  606. 25:11But she went home.
  607. 25:13And for the first night in a long time,
  608. 25:16she was not the only one standing guard.
  609. 25:19A single motorcycle sat parked across
  610. 25:22from her building all night, engine
  611. 25:24cold. A man in the saddle who did not
  612. 25:27move, who simply watched her dark window
  613. 25:30until the sun came up.
  614. 25:33Nobody knocked on her door at 4:00 a.m.
  615. 25:36Nobody knocked at all.
  616. 25:39What happened over the next 3 days, the
  617. 25:42town would talk about for years, though
  618. 25:44most of it happened where nobody could
  619. 25:46see.
  620. 25:48Deacon did not roar down Route 9 with 40
  621. 25:51bikes and a chain.
  622. 25:53That was not how he worked, and Cutter
  623. 25:56would have loved it. A big loud fight he
  624. 25:58could call a war.
  625. 26:01Instead, Deacon got quiet, and quiet
  626. 26:03from a man like that is a far worse
  627. 26:05thing.
  628. 26:07Verse, the freight stopped.
  629. 26:10Every driver who ran a load for Cutter
  630. 26:12Haulage on the interstate found the
  631. 26:14Diablos already knew his route, his
  632. 26:17schedule, his home.
  633. 26:20Nobody was touched.
  634. 26:22Nobody had to be.
  635. 26:25Within a day, half of Cutter's drivers
  636. 26:27had called in sick because there is a
  637. 26:30kind of politeness from dangerous men
  638. 26:32that is more frightening than any
  639. 26:34threat, and they had all received it.
  640. 26:38A shipment of Cutter's sat in a yard
  641. 26:40until it spoiled.
  642. 26:42Then another.
  643. 26:44The service fee that squeezed Route 9
  644. 26:47depended on trucks that moved, and the
  645. 26:49trucks had stopped moving.
  646. 26:52Second, Deacon made some calls.
  647. 26:55It turned out a man who has ridden 50
  648. 26:57years knows people.
  649. 27:00He knew a fellow at the county weigh
  650. 27:02station who had long wondered about
  651. 27:04Cutter's logbooks.
  652. 27:07He knew a woman at the bank who did not
  653. 27:09care for how Del Cutter spoke to
  654. 27:11tellers.
  655. 27:13He knew, most of all, exactly which of
  656. 27:16Cutter's own men had swung the boots
  657. 27:18that night. And which ones had done it
  658. 27:21because they were scared of Del and
  659. 27:23would happily be a good deal more scared
  660. 27:25of somebody else.
  661. 27:28One by one, quietly, those men came up
  662. 27:31the mountain. And one by one, they told
  663. 27:33the truth. And they did not go home to
  664. 27:35Cutter.
  665. 27:37By the third day, Del Cutter was a
  666. 27:39general with no army.
  667. 27:42His drivers gone.
  668. 27:45His freight rotting.
  669. 27:47His muscle turned.
  670. 27:50His fee unpaid up and down the highway
  671. 27:53because every business owner had gotten
  672. 27:55a quiet visit, too. A courteous one.
  673. 27:58From men who said only that Cutter would
  674. 28:01not be bothering them anymore. And they
  675. 28:03could keep their money now.
  676. 28:06Sal wept in the walk-in when they told
  677. 28:08him.
  678. 28:09Actually wept. An old man who had not
  679. 28:12cried since his wife passed because a
  680. 28:15weight he had carried for a year was
  681. 28:17just lifted off him by strangers who
  682. 28:20wanted nothing back.
  683. 28:22And then Deacon went to see Del Cutter
  684. 28:24himself.
  685. 28:26He did it in daylight.
  686. 28:29He drove because his ribs would not take
  687. 28:31a bike yet. And Marlene heard about it
  688. 28:34later from three different people who
  689. 28:36each swore they had it right.
  690. 28:39Deacon walked into the Cutter Haulage
  691. 28:41office on his own two feet. One eye
  692. 28:44still yellow-green. And he sat down
  693. 28:47across the desk from the man who had
  694. 28:49left him for dead, and he set a folded
  695. 28:52napkin on the wood between them.
  696. 28:55The one with the little house crossed
  697. 28:57out.
  698. 28:58Somebody had fished it from Marlene's
  699. 29:00trash and gotten it to him.
  700. 29:03You drew this.
  701. 29:06Deacon said.
  702. 29:08For the coffee lady.
  703. 29:10The one who cut me loose.
  704. 29:13Cutter's mouth worked.
  705. 29:15No sound came.
  706. 29:18Here's what's going to happen.
  707. 29:20Deacon said in that terrible calm voice.
  708. 29:24You're done on this highway.
  709. 29:27Your feed is done.
  710. 29:29Your yard, your trucks, all of it.
  711. 29:32You're going to sign over to a fellow I
  712. 29:34know by Friday, fair price. And you're
  713. 29:37going to take that money, and you're
  714. 29:39going to be gone from Kern County by the
  715. 29:41weekend.
  716. 29:43You'll do it because if you don't, every
  717. 29:46log you ever cooked and every threat you
  718. 29:49ever made is going to the sheriff and
  719. 29:51the state. And I've got 11 of your own
  720. 29:54men who will swear to all of it.
  721. 29:57He leaned in and it cost him, and he did
  722. 29:59not let it show.
  723. 30:02And the waitress.
  724. 30:04Marlene.
  725. 30:06You're going to make her whole.
  726. 30:08Every dollar you skimmed off her checks,
  727. 30:11every dollar in cash on her table by
  728. 30:14tomorrow night.
  729. 30:16You put her son's name in your mouth.
  730. 30:19That was the worst mistake you ever
  731. 30:21made, and you made a lot of them.
  732. 30:24He stood up.
  733. 30:26You've got till Friday.
  734. 30:29Be grateful I'm a patient man.
  735. 30:32Two of my brothers wanted to handle this
  736. 30:34different.
  737. 30:36Del Cutter left the county Thursday.
  738. 30:40A day early.
  739. 30:42The cash was on Marlene's kitchen table
  740. 30:44the next night, more than he had ever
  741. 30:46skimmed, wrapped in a rubber band, no
  742. 30:49note.
  743. 30:51She counted it twice at that same table
  744. 30:54where she had drunk her tea and told
  745. 30:56herself it was over.
  746. 30:58Then she sat back and let herself shake
  747. 31:01all of it. The 4:00 a.m. fist and the
  748. 31:04napkin and the men in the booth, all of
  749. 31:07it coming loose at last the way the
  750. 31:09ropes had come loose from Deekon's
  751. 31:11wrists.
  752. 31:13She cried for a while.
  753. 31:15Then she made tea and she was not afraid
  754. 31:18and that was the strangest feeling of
  755. 31:20all.
  756. 31:22The Iron Skillet did not go under.
  757. 31:25Its suppliers came back.
  758. 31:28Its deliveries showed up clean and on
  759. 31:30time and free. And Sal put Marlene's
  760. 31:33name on a little brass plate by the
  761. 31:35register that said head of house and
  762. 31:38gave her a raise he could finally
  763. 31:40afford.
  764. 31:42The truckers who never tipped started
  765. 31:44tipping because word got around about
  766. 31:47the coffee lady and what she had done.
  767. 31:49And men who would never say a soft word
  768. 31:52to anybody left folded fives under their
  769. 31:54cups and mumbled at the floor on the way
  770. 31:57out.
  771. 31:59Bruno the shepherd got fat and happy.
  772. 32:02And once a week, sometimes twice, a low
  773. 32:06black motorcycle would pull into the
  774. 32:08gravel lot and Deekon Work would fold
  775. 32:10himself into the corner booth, the one
  776. 32:13where Cutter's men used to sit and watch
  777. 32:15her. And Marlene would bring him coffee
  778. 32:18and a slice of pie he had not ordered
  779. 32:21and would not be charged for.
  780. 32:23He always tried to pay.
  781. 32:26She never let him.
  782. 32:29It became a joke between them. The money
  783. 32:31he could not give her and the debt
  784. 32:34neither of them could ever really name.
  785. 32:37One evening near closing, the rain came
  786. 32:40down hard again, the way it had that
  787. 32:42first night, drumming the roof and
  788. 32:44blurring the windows.
  789. 32:47Deacon sat with his coffee and watched
  790. 32:49it and said, "You could have kept
  791. 32:51driving.
  792. 32:53That night,
  793. 32:55everybody else would have.
  794. 32:57Do you ever think about that?
  795. 33:00How close you came to just driving on
  796. 33:02by?"
  797. 33:04Marlena wiped down the counter and
  798. 33:06thought about it honestly, the way she
  799. 33:08thought about everything.
  800. 33:11"No," she said.
  801. 33:13"I don't think I could have.
  802. 33:16It was never really a choice for me.
  803. 33:19A hurt thing is a hurt thing.
  804. 33:22You stop."
  805. 33:24She hung the rag over the tap.
  806. 33:27"I didn't know who you were.
  807. 33:29I didn't know about Cutter or the checks
  808. 33:32or any of it.
  809. 33:34I just saw a man in the rain and a
  810. 33:36scared dog.
  811. 33:38That's all it ever was."
  812. 33:40Deacon nodded slowly, turning his cup on
  813. 33:43the saucer.
  814. 33:45"That's the whole thing right there," he
  815. 33:47said, half to himself.
  816. 33:50"Everybody in this county knew to walk
  817. 33:52away from me.
  818. 33:54Knew exactly who I was, exactly what it
  819. 33:57had cost them.
  820. 33:59And the one person who stopped was the
  821. 34:02one who didn't know a thing.
  822. 34:04Just knew I was hurting."
  823. 34:07He looked up at her.
  824. 34:10"I've had a hundred men swear they'd die
  825. 34:12for me.
  826. 34:14Not one of them ever got out of a warm
  827. 34:16car in the rain for a stranger.
  828. 34:19You did.
  829. 34:21You want to know what strength is? It's
  830. 34:23not the patch.
  831. 34:26It's not the boots.
  832. 34:28It's a tired woman with a bad knee who
  833. 34:30stops when everybody else drives past.
  834. 34:34Marlene did not have anything to say to
  835. 34:36that. So, she poured him a little more
  836. 34:39coffee.
  837. 34:40And outside the rain kept falling on the
  838. 34:43gravel lot where a boot had once driven
  839. 34:45into a man's ribs and left him for dead.
  840. 34:49Only now the lot was just a lot.
  841. 34:52The fence post was just a post.
  842. 34:55And the woman who had knelt in that
  843. 34:57freezing mud for a stranger stood warm
  844. 35:00and safe behind her own counter.
  845. 35:02No longer invisible. No longer afraid.
  846. 35:06Her son on the phone twice a week now.
  847. 35:08Her name on a brass plate by the
  848. 35:10register.
  849. 35:12She had gone out of her way for a
  850. 35:14stranger in the rain. And every single
  851. 35:17thing she gave that night had come home
  852. 35:19to her.
  853. 35:21That is the whole story.
  854. 35:23That is why I wanted to tell it.
  855. 35:27A hurt thing is a hurt thing.
  856. 35:29You stop.
  857. 35:31And sometimes when you do, the world
  858. 35:34stops for you right back.
