- 0:00About fifty works, some never exhibited
- 0:02before, and the reconstruction of the
- 0:04large environments that Luciano Fabro
- 0:07called Habitats. Pirelli HangarBicocca
- 0:10dedicates "Abitare lo spazio" to this
- 0:12exponent of Arte Povera, the first
- 0:14museum retrospective in Italy since his
- 0:17death. An exhibition that takes
- 0:20advantage of the large dimensions of
- 0:22the naves to retrace 50 years of the
- 0:24artist's research into the relationship
- 0:26between sculpture, space, and the
- 0:27spectator. Let's say we took advantage
- 0:32of the dimensions of HangarBicocca to
- 0:34be able to present works that would not
- 0:37be possible to present in other places,
- 0:40and to reconstruct some of Fabro's
- 0:42habitats that, coincidentally, in the
- 0:45case of the Rotterdam habitat behind us
- 0:47, were more or less the same size as
- 0:50the Hangar space; and this is a unique
- 0:52occasion, because it is a coincidence
- 0:56that would be difficult to repeat. We
- 1:02worked on the installation of the
- 1:04various works, and naturally, not so
- 1:07much by taking into account what were
- 1:10philological documents, but rather by
- 1:13evaluating what this space was in which
- 1:15they had to live. We were able to
- 1:22reconstruct the habitats because, both
- 1:24for Rotterdam and the others that
- 1:26followed, we had the original documents
- 1:29and designs, and, what's more, we had a
- 1:32bit of fun bringing out some
- 1:33unpublished works. The special
- 1:38ingredient of his art was seriousness,
- 1:42the absolute research into the very
- 1:46problem of sculpture and art in general
- 1:49; and as a man and also as an artist,
- 1:56as you can see in the titles, also
- 1:58irony. So you will also find ironic
- 2:01elements here, even in the very serious
- 2:04works, which also play on this dual
- 2:07channel.
- 2:09>> This is a historic exhibition of an
- 2:11artist who was fundamental for the city
- 2:13of Milan. He gave so much, he taught at
- 2:16Brera, he founded the Casa degli
- 2:18Artisti, but he was also fundamental
- 2:20for generations to come of Italian
- 2:22artists and beyond. It is an exhibition
- 2:26that brings together almost 50 works
- 2:28spanning a period of 40 years, more or
- 2:30less from the early 60s to his last
- 2:32work. We are in 2006, one year before
- 2:35the artist's death, but these are works
- 2:38that still speak to us and speak to,
- 2:41let's say, us today. For Luciano Fabro,
- 2:44his entire body of work, which is very
- 2:46diverse, was always very important. He
- 2:48participated, he was one of the artists
- 2:50of the Arte Povera group, but he was
- 2:51always the least recognizable. He broke
- 2:54away almost immediately and truly had a
- 2:56development, an absolutely incredible
- 2:59practice; but the whole thread, let's
- 3:01say, the common thread of his work is
- 3:03this incessant reflection on language
- 3:06and the meaning of sculpture, of art,
- 3:08but above all of the relationship
- 3:10between the space that surrounds us,
- 3:13those who look at the work, and the
- 3:15work itself. Therefore, this moment of
- 3:18relationship. And the exhibition
- 3:21retraces this journey a bit, doing so
- 3:23with a variety of works and, in
- 3:25particular, focusing at its heart on
- 3:27his research into what he called the "
- 3:29habitat"; therefore, this environment
- 3:31that can also contain other works, but
- 3:34which he conceived as a place for
- 3:36stimulating the senses and the
- 3:37intellect, a place to ask questions,
- 3:40but also to feel at ease and enjoy the
- 3:42works. Yeah.
