- 4:16That's what you think happened?
- 4:19>> Danny went by the next morning to tape a
- 4:21sign on the door. Your keys were on the
- 4:23mat.
- 4:25That's all. Not even a note.
- 4:31A few days later, the lady at the post
- 4:34office tells me you joined the Navy.
- 4:42>> There was a note. It was with the keys.
- 4:46I got my date that afternoon, 6:00 a.m.
- 4:49Charlotte, then a plane to Great Lakes.
- 4:52I told your dad. He let me off early to
- 4:55go pack.
- 5:00>> Dad knew you were leaving.
- 5:03>> Just since that afternoon,
- 5:0610:30, I came back. Tuesday night, you
- 5:09always did the books and we'd split a
- 5:11pie.
- 5:12I was going to tell you the place was
- 5:15dark. I called you twice. Voicemail.
- 5:21I went by your place, too. Dark.
- 5:25I had to be on the road at 4:00.
- 5:30So, I wrote it down and I put it through
- 5:33the slot with my keys.
- 5:39>> 9:00 we were closing up. Dad went down
- 5:42at the grill. I found him.
- 5:46Ambulance took him to Ashefer.
- 5:48I lost my phone somewhere in that ER.
- 5:51New phone, new number.
- 5:55Every number I had was in the old one.
- 5:58Yours, too,
- 6:00>> Frank. Is he?
- 6:02He held on till November.
- 6:10>> 14 years. I figured he was back there
- 6:12flipping eggs.
- 6:15>> Good boy.
- 6:16>> You never called after.
- 6:20>> First call they let me make, your number
- 6:22was disconnected. I called the diner. It
- 6:25rang and rang.
- 6:27>> We were closed 6 weeks
- 6:31>> out in California. I wrote you at your
- 6:32apartment. It came back. Moved. No
- 6:35forwarding address.
- 6:40I figured that was my answer. I wasn't
- 6:43going to make you say no twice.
- 6:45>> No. To what?
- 6:50>> What did it say? The note
- 6:54>> doesn't matter now.
- 7:01Did you see that? He caught it in the
- 7:03air.
- 7:05>> I saw.
- 7:06>> You've got an arm, kid.
- 7:09>> I pitch sometimes.
- 7:20So, the ring on your chain,
- 7:25somebody waiting for you in Virginia
- 7:27Beach.
- 7:28Nobody's waiting. Never married.
- 7:30>> Then whose ring is it?
- 7:34>> Somebody who never said yes.
- 7:37>> She missed out.
- 7:44>> Monday when Toby ran in and grabbed you.
- 7:47I thought he was yours. I had the leash
- 7:49on. I was halfway out the door.
- 7:56You thought I had a 10-year-old and
- 7:58nobody in this county mentioned it to
- 7:59you?
- 8:01>> I haven't talked to anybody in this
- 8:02county in 14 years.
- 8:1514 years and we're still guessing at
- 8:17each other.
- 8:20I looked you up once online. Nothing.
- 8:23>> We're not supposed to be findable.
- 8:25>> That's convenient.
- 8:26>> It was till now.
- 8:31>> You ever think about coming back here?
- 8:34>> Every October,
- 8:36leaves turn, I smell a flat top grill
- 8:38somewhere, and I'm 20 again.
- 8:41>> And then
- 8:43>> And then I'd tell myself there was
- 8:44nothing to come back to.
- 8:56She thinks it was somebody else's.
- 9:06>> Can Atlas come today? We're going to
- 9:08Grandpa's Diner to sign stuff for the
- 9:10coffee people.
- 9:10>> Toby,
- 9:12>> what you said?
- 9:14>> Dad's place. Dawson's. It's been closed
- 9:18since Danny.
- 9:19A chain that does drive-through coffee
- 9:21wants the lot.
- 9:24>> They want an answer by Friday.
- 9:26>> I'm going down today to clear out his
- 9:27things.
- 9:30>> Want a hand?
- 9:36>> Take the whole week. Claire, go do what
- 9:38you need to do.
- 9:39>> Can Atlas come, please?
- 9:43>> Fine. Everybody's coming.
- 9:53The door eats the mail.
- 9:56Dad used to say it ate the electric
- 9:58bill.
- 10:14He smells a mouse
- 10:16>> probably.
- 10:29Danny lost a yard stick under there
- 10:31once. Whatever it eats, it keeps.
- 10:35>> It's gone, buddy.
- 10:41Your pie case still leans.
- 10:43>> Pies have slid left since before I was
- 10:45born.
- 10:47>> I'll level it before I go.
- 11:00After the surgery, Dad had a stroke. He
- 11:02couldn't get a whole sentence out. The
- 11:03last few days, all he'd say was
- 11:07the boy answer over and over.
- 11:14I figured he was asking where you'd gone
- 11:17or he was confused.
- 11:23After the funeral, I tried to go in
- 11:25there once, got as far as the spot where
- 11:27he fell, and I walked right back out.
- 11:31Never went in again.
- 11:34Danny could. I can't.
- 12:06here. So, you're not waiting on me to
- 12:07get in.
- 12:12>> Did you know my dad? Like, really know
- 12:14him?
- 12:16>> Your dad taught me to flip an egg
- 12:18without breaking the yolk. Took me a
- 12:20month.
- 12:23>> He could do it with his eyes closed.
- 12:26He showed off like that every single
- 12:28morning.
- 12:32>> Can we have Grandpa's peach pie? Dad
- 12:35used to make it.
- 12:37>> Your dad made it. Grandpa made it. I
- 12:39never have.
- 13:12Is it supposed to taste like the ocean?
- 13:21He labeled them backwards.
- 13:24>> He what?
- 13:30>> Salt. Your dad switched the labels so
- 13:33the new hiders wouldn't sneak sugar for
- 13:35their coffee. I drank salty coffee for a
- 13:38week. Danny knew. You never cooked. And
- 13:42it's still working.
- 13:48He's still pranking us in his own
- 13:50kitchen.
- 13:54Claire, they'll come up 10% if you sign
- 13:56by Friday.
- 13:59It's not for sale. Not Friday. Not at
- 14:02all. Thank you.
- 14:08I can't afford this. The compressor in
- 14:10that pie case is dying. The wiring's
- 14:12from 1971. The roof
- 14:18Let me help. I've got money. I've had
- 14:22nothing to spend it on.
- 14:24>> I'm not a charity case and you're not a
- 14:26bank.
- 14:28>> Then make it a loan.
- 14:33>> In writing with interest with a due date
- 14:36and the diner's mine, the recipes are
- 14:39mine.
- 14:41>> Yes, ma'am.
- 14:51Toby D. Witness.
- 14:54I'll have the lawyer and Boon type it
- 14:55out next week.
- 15:01Dad can hold on to it.
- 15:09Aunt Claire comes to every game. She
- 15:11sits in the top row so she can see me
- 15:13and still yell.
- 15:15>> What does she yell?
- 15:16>> Eye on the ball, Toby. Every single
- 15:19pitch. Even when I'm not batting.
- 15:31>> Six days, buddy.
- 15:41Chief, leave's canceled. We're going
- 15:43early. Team room Wednesday 1800.
- 15:45>> Copy.
- 15:53>> Toby, take Atlas out back for a bit.
- 16:00>> Every contractor's number, the part
- 16:02number for the compressor, the
- 16:04electrician in Marion is the honest one.
- 16:11No payback.
- 16:13This isn't what we wrote.
- 16:15>> Call it a gift.
- 16:16>> We had terms.
- 16:21>> I got called back. We deploy early. 7
- 16:25months, maybe more. I leave at 5:00
- 16:28tomorrow morning.
- 16:33>> When were you going to tell me?
- 16:36I was going to lock up on my way out and
- 16:38drop the key through the slot.
- 16:40>> Through the slot with a note like last
- 16:44time.
- 16:46>> Last time I never got an answer
- 16:48>> because I never got it.
- 16:51>> I know that now.
- 16:52>> Then ask me now. Whatever it was, ask
- 16:55me.
- 17:03You've got Toby.
- 17:05You've got this place.
- 17:08I can't tell you where I'm going or when
- 17:10I can call. I'm not going to ask you to
- 17:12sit by a phone for 7 months.
- 17:20There it is. You're deciding what I can
- 17:22carry again.
- 17:26Toby, we're going.
- 17:58Enr writen with interest.
- 18:04Said I'd level it before I go.
- 18:39Not through the slot. Not this time.
- 18:56You said 5. It's 4:40.
- 19:00>> You came
- 19:01>> last time you were gone before the sun
- 19:03came up. I wasn't going to hear it from
- 19:05the post office twice.
- 19:10>> You asked me what the question was.
- 19:18>> Where
- 19:21The door opens in. It pushed it under.
- 19:2414 years.
- 19:30It ate the electric bill.
- 19:39Claire,
- 19:40they gave me my date today.
- 19:43I report at 6:00 tomorrow morning. I
- 19:46never told you I'd signed up because I
- 19:49didn't want to say it out loud till it
- 19:50was real.
- 19:52It's real now.
- 19:57I asked your dad this afternoon if I
- 19:59could marry you. He said yes.
- 20:05The boy answer.
- 20:13He wasn't confused.
- 20:15He wasn't asking where you went. He was
- 20:17asking me if I'd answered you.
- 20:20You knew Saturday when I told you.
- 20:25I thought the letter was gone.
- 20:28I didn't want to give you one more thing
- 20:29you couldn't fix.
- 20:36Then he laughed and said,
- 20:38"She'll make you wait for an answer, so
- 20:40ask her early."
- 20:43So, I'm asking early. I've got a ring.
- 20:46It isn't much.
- 20:49Graduation's in December at Great Lakes.
- 20:52If you're in the Blouchers, that's Yes.

- 21:13Every face in that drill hall. Twice.
- 21:17I was the only one in my division.
- 21:19Nobody came for
- 21:23that December. I was packing up dad's
- 21:25things. I didn't know there was a seat
- 21:27for me.
- 21:34Somebody who never said yes.
- 21:37>> She never got the chance.
- 21:39>> She's got it now.
- 21:48Not on a dusty floor at 5 in the morning
- 21:50with your truck packed. You come home
- 21:53and you ask me properly in front of Toby
- 21:57top row.
- 22:00>> That's 7 months.
- 22:04>> I waited 14 years for a letter I didn't
- 22:07know about. I can wait seven months for
- 22:08a question I know is coming.
- 22:11I loved you when I wrote that. I never
- 22:14stopped.
- 22:16>> I know.
- 22:18>> I'm in the bleachers, Luke. I'm just 14
- 22:20years late.
- 22:42Can he stay with us while you're gone?
- 22:51>> He's not alone. He's a promise.
- 22:55I have to come back for him.
