- 0:04founding of America even before the
- 0:07settlement of Jamestown
- 0:08there were Filipinos in what is now
- 0:10known as the continental United States
- 0:12throughout history Filipino Americans
- 0:15have led movements confronted and
- 0:18justices and have created world shaking
- 0:20ideas they disrupt so why is their
- 0:23history largely untold we must tell them
- 0:26to unsettle the pages of US history they
- 0:29reveal who we are as Americans people
- 0:34from the Philippines which was under
- 0:36Spain first landed in California as part
- 0:38of the Spanish galleons on future
- 0:40sailings many jumped ship to form
- 0:43settlements in what would be known as
- 0:44Louisiana it is a fact Filipino
- 0:47Americans have been in the United States
- 0:49for centuries in 1898 the United States
- 0:54entered into war against Spain and took
- 0:56possession of the Philippines
- 0:57Ping's Spain 20 million dollars to
- 1:00rationalize colonization American
- 1:03officials referred to this as benevolent
- 1:05assimilation claiming to protect
- 1:07filipinos rights and liberties but the
- 1:10Filipino people were already fighting
- 1:12for independence from Spain resisted us
- 1:15colonization this was known as the
- 1:17philippine-american war fought with
- 1:19extreme violence General Jacob H Smith
- 1:22notoriously ordered his soldiers to kill
- 1:24every Filipino boy over 10 years old
- 1:27many Americans oppose this including
- 1:30Mark Twain and the African American
- 1:32buffalo soldiers who were sent to the
- 1:34Philippines for battle somehow America
- 1:37needed to justify this war they even
- 1:39transported some Filipinos to the 1904
- 1:42st. Louis World's Fair for display
- 1:45erased from our history The Forgotten
- 1:47War became the catalyst of Filipino
- 1:49migration to the u.s. because of the
- 1:52Philippines Colonials
- 1:54this the people became a major source of
- 1:56cheap labor and so Filipinos migrated to
- 1:59Hawaii as early as 1906 to work in sugar
- 2:03plantations by the 1920s many Filipino
- 2:06laborers also came to the west coast to
- 2:08become a driving force behind America's
- 2:11agricultural industry but many of these
- 2:13labor migrants were met with racial
- 2:15hostility white Americans accused
- 2:18Filipino men of stealing their jobs and
- 2:21women Filipinos face down mobs beatings
- 2:25and murder yet they resisted this
- 2:27oppression Filipino towns such as
- 2:29Stockton's little Manila were formed to
- 2:31serve as safe havens up and down the
- 2:33west coast labor strikes demanded fair
- 2:35wages and working conditions under
- 2:38pressure Congress greatly restricted the
- 2:40migration of Filipinos and promised
- 2:42independence for the Philippines through
- 2:45it all Filipinos continued to persevere
- 2:48world war ii was a time of great
- 2:51upheaval for both the philippines and
- 2:53Filipino Americans Japan bombed American
- 2:56bases in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor and
- 2:59in the Philippines prompting the u.s. to
- 3:01enter the war as a colony the
- 3:03Philippines allied with America
- 3:05President Roosevelt established the
- 3:07United States Armed Forces in the Far
- 3:09East to enlist nearly 250,000 Filipinos
- 3:13into the u.s. armed forces a decisive
- 3:16move that helped win the Pacific Theater
- 3:18after the war America granted
- 3:21independence to the Philippines
- 3:22Filipinos who joined the armed forces in
- 3:25the u.s. gained the right to citizenship
- 3:27Filipino veterans in the Philippines
- 3:29were promised citizenship as well and
- 3:31military benefits
- 3:32however the passing of the 1946
- 3:36rescission Act broke that promise for
- 3:38many of those veterans
- 3:42American military bases remained in the
- 3:45Philippines fork routing Filipinos at
- 3:48one point there were more Filipinos in
- 3:50the u.s. needy than the Philippine Navy
- 3:52many of these Navy sailors came to
- 3:55America Filipino women married to u.s.
- 3:58military men also migrated to the u.s.
- 4:00these women raised families bought land
- 4:03and created communities they built the
- 4:06next generation of Filipino Americans in
- 4:101965 an important legislation greatly
- 4:13expanded immigration quotas by 1970 the
- 4:17Filipino population had ballooned in a
- 4:19decade it had more than doubled
- 4:21many of these new immigrants were women
- 4:23and professionals in the 60s Filipino
- 4:30Americans fought for equality alongside
- 4:32black power and Chicano movements in
- 4:35California Lari it Liang Phillip
- 4:38Veracruz and other organizers led a
- 4:40strike against great businesses
- 4:42Filipinos convinced SR Chavez in his
- 4:45association to join the strike Filipinos
- 4:48started the 1965 delano grape strike and
- 4:51together with Latinos they had one of
- 4:53the most successful strikes against
- 4:55agribusiness in history the younger
- 4:58generation were also in revolt San
- 5:00Francisco State University and UC
- 5:02Berkeley students including young
- 5:04Filipino Americans led a strike that
- 5:07established ethnic studies many other
- 5:09groups organized to serve the Filipino
- 5:11American community there are now over 4
- 5:17million Filipinos in the United States
- 5:20founds the Filipino American National
- 5:23Historical Society tells the stories of
- 5:25the Filipino American experience
- 5:27established in 1982 by Dorothy LIGO
- 5:31Cordova and Fred Cordova Phan saw the
- 5:33value in documenting Filipino American
- 5:36history honoring October as Filipino
- 5:38American History Month and why would it
- 5:41be Filipino Americans persevere for a
- 5:44just and prosperous society known
- 5:46the stakes whether they excel in public
- 5:48service had the Filipino food movement
- 5:53inspire us as sports heroes and as
- 5:56creative artists whether they spark
- 5:58innovation across industries lead
- 6:01movements for justice fight for national
- 6:04recognition and the Congressional Gold
- 6:06Medal for Filipino World War two
- 6:08veterans Filipino Americans disrupt and
- 6:12their stories cannot fade no matter what
- 6:15forces make us forget we recover them
- 6:17reveal and speak about their stories
- 6:20because as we make history we must also
- 6:24tell it to the world
