A Desperate Dad Asked Bikers to Hide His Daughter — What Happened Next Shocked Everyone — Transcript

- 0:00I don't need protection for myself.
- 0:02I need you to hide my daughter until
- 0:04morning or she won't live to see it.
- 0:06That's what Nathan Walker said at 12:17
- 0:08in the morning standing at the door of
- 0:10the most feared motorcycle club in town
- 0:12with his 19-year-old daughter shaking in
- 0:14the truck behind him. He had no family
- 0:17left to call, no cop would listen, no
- 0:19friend would answer. So he knocked on
- 0:21the one door everyone else in town was
- 0:23afraid of. Before we go further, if you
- 0:25believe a father should never give up on
- 0:27his child, subscribe, stay with me to
- 0:30the very end and comment the name of the
- 0:32city where you're watching from so I can
- 0:35see how far this story travels tonight.
- 0:37The knock came three times hard and flat
- 0:40the way a man knocks when his knuckles
- 0:42are the only thing he has left to
- 0:43bargain with.
- 0:44Inside the clubhouse the music died.
- 0:47Somebody's boots stopped tapping.
- 0:49A pool cue went still against green
- 0:51felt. Somebody expecting company,
- 0:53Colebear Dawson asked, and nobody
- 0:55answered him because nobody was.
- 0:57It was 12:17 in the morning. Men who
- 0:59ride for a living learn the difference
- 1:01between a knock that wants a beer and a
- 1:04knock that's running from something.
- 1:06This one was running. Jackson Raven Cole
- 1:09didn't rush. He never rushed. He set his
- 1:11glass down on the bar, wiped his hands
- 1:13on a rag, and looked once around the
- 1:15room at the men who'd built their whole
- 1:16lives inside those cinder block walls.
- 1:19Nobody moves till I say, he said. Bear
- 1:21get the door behind me. Ghosty's on the
- 1:24lot.
- 1:25Then he pulled the heavy steel door open
- 1:27and the cold came in first and behind
- 1:30the cold came a man Jackson had never
- 1:32seen before in his life. The stranger
- 1:34was maybe 42. Grease under his
- 1:36fingernails that no amount of scrubbing
- 1:38had ever fully taken out. A working
- 1:41man's hands, a working man's shoulders,
- 1:43and a face that had clearly not slept in
- 1:45days. He was not big. He was not
- 1:48dangerous looking. He was terrified and
- 1:50he was trying not to show it which was
- 1:52the most terrifying thing about him.
- 1:55Help you, Jackson said. The man's mouth
- 1:57opened.
- 1:58Nothing came out. His eyes flicked once
- 2:01fast toward the parking lot behind him,
- 2:03toward an old pickup with its engine
- 2:04still running and a small shape in the
- 2:06passenger seat.
- 2:08"I said, can I help you?" Jackson
- 2:10repeated softer this time, because he'd
- 2:12seen that flick of the eyes before.
- 2:15Before on soldiers and on cornered dogs,
- 2:17and he knew what it meant. "My name is
- 2:19Nathan Walker." the man finally said.
- 2:22His voice cracked in the middle of his
- 2:23own name.
- 2:24"I fix engines. I've never been in
- 2:26trouble a day in my life.
- 2:28I've never so much as had a parking
- 2:30ticket." He swallowed. "And I don't know
- 2:33why I'm here, except I've got nowhere
- 2:35else to be."
- 2:37"That's usually how it starts." Jackson
- 2:38said. "I need to ask you something."
- 2:41Nathan said. "And I need you to hear the
- 2:43whole thing before you say no." Behind
- 2:45Jackson, Bear shifted his weight. Lucas
- 2:47Reed, the youngest man in the room,
- 2:49leaned forward on a stool.
- 2:50Megan Carter, the only woman in the
- 2:52building and the sharpest legal mind any
- 2:54of them had ever met, set down the
- 2:56paperwork she'd been reading and stood
- 2:58up slow.
- 3:00"I'm listening." Jackson said. Nathan
- 3:02looked him dead in the face. He didn't
- 3:04blink. And he said the words he'd been
- 3:06rehearsing the whole drive over, the
- 3:08words that had felt insane in his own
- 3:10kitchen an hour ago, and felt more
- 3:12insane now.
- 3:13"I don't need protection for myself."
- 3:16He paused. His jaw worked. "I need you
- 3:19to hide my daughter until morning."
- 3:21The clubhouse went completely silent.
- 3:23You could hear the truck engine idling
- 3:25out in the dark. You could hear the wind
- 3:27pushing against the metal siding. And
- 3:30you could hear underneath all of it the
- 3:32sound of 11 grown men doing the math on
- 3:35exactly how much trouble one desperate
- 3:37stranger could bring through a door.
- 3:39Bear was the first to speak, and he
- 3:41spoke low only to Jackson. "That's a
- 3:43setup if I've ever heard one. Guy shows
- 3:45up at midnight, no warning, wants us to
- 3:47hold on to a girl. That's how the feds
- 3:49walk you into a room, Raven.
- 3:51That's how a rival club walks you into a
- 3:53room.
- 3:54That's how everybody walks you into a
- 3:56room. I know how it sounds, Nathan said,
- 3:58and that stopped Bear cold because he
- 4:00hadn't meant to be heard.
- 4:02You think I don't know how it sounds?
- 4:04I'm a mechanic.
- 4:05I coach I coach Little League. Three
- 4:08weeks ago I didn't know this building
- 4:10existed.
- 4:11You think I wanted to knock on this
- 4:13door?
- 4:14Then why did you, Lucas asked before
- 4:16anyone could stop him.
- 4:18Nathan turned to the kid and something
- 4:20in his face just
- 4:21broke a little. Because I called
- 4:23everybody else first, he said. That's
- 4:26why. You're not the first door I knocked
- 4:28on tonight. You're the last one.
- 4:31Ghost Ryan Mitchell, who had done two
- 4:32tours in places he never named and who
- 4:35could go a full evening without saying a
- 4:37single word, moved to the front window
- 4:39and looked out into the dark without
- 4:40being told.
- 4:42He watched the lot for a three count.
- 4:44Then he said quiet in that flat voice of
- 4:46his, man's not lying about being
- 4:48followed.
- 4:49Everyone turned. Ghost, Jackson said.
- 4:52There's a vehicle on the county road.
- 4:54Lights off. Been sitting maybe 2
- 4:57minutes.
- 4:58Ghost didn't move his eyes from the
- 4:59glass.
- 5:00It rolled in about 10 seconds after his
- 5:02truck did. It hasn't moved since.
- 5:04Whoever's in it is watching this
- 5:06building right now.
- 5:08The temperature in the room changed.
- 5:10Nathan closed his eyes. When he opened
- 5:12them, they were wet. That's them, he
- 5:14whispered. Oh God, that's them. They
- 5:17followed us here. I thought I took back
- 5:20roads. I doubled back twice. I swear I
- 5:23Nathan. Jackson's voice cut through it
- 5:25hard and steady, the voice of a man used
- 5:28to being the calmest thing in any room.
- 5:30Where is your daughter right now?
- 5:32In the truck.
- 5:34Doors locked. Y- yes. Bring her in right
- 5:37now. Bear cover him to the vehicle and
- 5:39back. Ghost keep me honest on that car.
- 5:43Nobody touches it. Nobody He at it
- 5:45twice. We don't know who's in it, and
- 5:47I'm not starting a war over a shadow.
- 5:50Lucas, get off your stool. Megan.
- 5:52[clears throat]
- 5:53On it, Megan said, already moving.
- 5:55Nathan ran. He ran across that parking
- 5:57lot like his life was in the truck,
- 5:59because as far as he was concerned, it
- 6:01was. And Bear went with him, a mountain
- 6:04of a man moving surprisingly light on
- 6:06his feet. And 30 seconds later, the door
- 6:08opened again, and Nathan came back
- 6:10through it with his arm around a girl.
- 6:13And that was the first moment the story
- 6:14stopped being a father's story and
- 6:16started being hers. Sophie Walker was
- 6:1819, blonde.
- 6:20She'd have been pretty on a normal day,
- 6:22the kind of girl who turned heads on a
- 6:24college campus without meaning to.
- 6:26But this was not a normal day. Her hair
- 6:28was pulled back rough, no makeup, an
- 6:30oversized hoodie two sizes too big, the
- 6:33outfit of someone who has learned that
- 6:35being noticed is dangerous.
- 6:37Her eyes were red-rimmed, but dry, the
- 6:39tears already cried out days ago. And
- 6:41clutched against her chest, held with
- 6:43both arms like a newborn, was a small
- 6:45gray backpack. She didn't collapse into
- 6:47the room. She didn't sob. She stopped
- 6:50just inside the door, and she scanned
- 6:52it, every face, every exit, the window,
- 6:54the back hall, the way you scan a room
- 6:56when you have taught yourself to always
- 6:58know the way out.
- 6:59Megan noticed it first. Of course she
- 7:02did.
- 7:03She's not just scared, Megan murmured to
- 7:05Jackson. Look at her. She's prepared.
- 7:08That's not panic. That's a plan.
- 7:11Sit her down, Jackson said. Get her
- 7:13water. Everybody give her air.
- 7:15Sophie didn't sit. You're the leader,
- 7:17she said to Jackson. It wasn't a
- 7:19question. She'd figured it out in 4
- 7:21seconds flat, read the room, found the
- 7:24man everyone else deferred to, and gone
- 7:26straight at him.
- 7:27You're the one who decides.
- 7:29I am.
- 7:30Then I need you to know something before
- 7:32you decide anything.
- 7:34Her voice was steadier than her father's
- 7:36had been,
- 7:37steadier than it had any right to be.
- 7:40My dad brought me here to hide, and I
- 7:42love him for it, but I didn't come here
- 7:44to hide.
- 7:46Sophie, Nathan started. No, Dad, they
- 7:49need to hear it.
- 7:50She turned back to Jackson. I came here
- 7:53to survive long enough to finish
- 7:54something. There's a difference, and and
- 7:57if you take me in tonight, you should
- 7:58know exactly what you're taking in
- 8:00because it's going to knock on your
- 8:02door, too.
- 8:03Bear let out a breath. See, this is the
- 8:06part where I usually leave.
- 8:08Sit down, Bear, Jackson said without
- 8:09looking at him.
- 8:11And Bear, who did not sit down for
- 8:12anyone, sat down.
- 8:14Talk, Jackson told the girl. So, she
- 8:16talked. Then Adam. She graduated top of
- 8:19her program.
- 8:20Finance.
- 8:21Numbers were the thing that had always
- 8:23made sense to her when nothing else did
- 8:25after her mother died. When she was
- 8:27small, numbers were the one part of the
- 8:29world that never lied.
- 8:31You added them up, they came out the
- 8:32same every time. That was safety to
- 8:35Sophie. That was solid ground. So, when
- 8:37Brighton Global Industries offered her a
- 8:39job straight out of school,
- 8:41a real job, salary, benefits, an office
- 8:44with her name on the door,
- 8:45she thought she'd won.
- 8:47Her father cried when she told him.
- 8:49Cried right there at the kitchen table.
- 8:51This man who never cried because his
- 8:53little girl had made it, had climbed all
- 8:55the way up out of the small town and the
- 8:57small life, and nobody was ever going to
- 9:00be able to look down on Nathan Walker's
- 9:02daughter again. Brighton, Megan repeated
- 9:04very quietly. Sophie, which Brighton?
- 9:07Brighton Global, construction and real
- 9:09estate. The big one. The one with their
- 9:12name on half the buildings downtown.
- 9:15Megan's jaw tightened. She didn't say
- 9:17anything, but she filed it away, and
- 9:19everyone who knew Megan saw her file it
- 9:20away. Sophie kept going. For 4 months,
- 9:23it was a dream.
- 9:25And then doing a routine reconciliation,
- 9:27the boring kind of work nobody
- 9:28double-checks
- 9:30because it's boring, she found a number
- 9:32that didn't add up. One number. That's
- 9:34how it always starts, she said. One
- 9:35number. Everybody thinks fraud is
- 9:37dramatic. It's not. It's one number in
- 9:40the wrong column, and if you're the kind
- 9:42of person who can't leave a wrong number
- 9:44alone, you follow it." "And I couldn't
- 9:46leave it alone. I have never in my life
- 9:49been able to leave a wrong number
- 9:50alone." She followed it. And the one
- 9:52number became a dozen. And the dozen
- 9:55became a pattern. And the pattern became
- 9:57a machine money leaving the company
- 10:00through vendors that didn't exist going
- 10:02to addresses that were empty. Lots
- 10:04coming back cleaned and quiet through a
- 10:06maze so carefully built that she knew.
- 10:09She knew that someone very smart and
- 10:11very powerful had designed it on
- 10:13purpose. Property records changed,
- 10:15government contracts that were supposed
- 10:17to go out for public bid quietly
- 10:18steered. Millions, not once. Every
- 10:21quarter.
- 10:22Like clockwork.
- 10:24Sophie's hands had started to shake
- 10:25again, but her voice hadn't.
- 10:28And the worst part, the part that made
- 10:30me sick, was how normal it looked from
- 10:31the outside.
- 10:33Everybody at that company thought they
- 10:34worked for a good place.
- 10:36I thought I worked for a good place. So,
- 10:38what did you do? Lucas asked. The kid
- 10:40had forgotten to be suspicious. He was
- 10:43leaning all the way forward now.
- 10:45"What you're supposed to do," Sophie
- 10:47said, "I reported it."
- 10:49The room got very quiet again. "I
- 10:51documented everything. I did it clean. I
- 10:54did it careful. I built a file a child
- 10:56could follow, and I took it to the one
- 10:58person I trusted at that company more
- 11:00than anyone."
- 11:01She stopped. Her mouth twisted around
- 11:03the next words like they hurt.
- 11:05"The man who hired me. The man who told
- 11:08me on my first day that Brighton was a
- 11:10family. The man who took me to lunch and
- 11:13asked about my day and remembered my
- 11:15birthday."
- 11:17"His name," Jackson said gently.
- 11:19Sophie shook her head. "Not yet. Almost
- 11:22there. Not yet." "Three days after I
- 11:24handed him that file," she said,
- 11:27"I was fired. No warning. No reason on
- 11:29paper. Escorted out of the building I'd
- 11:32worked in for 4 months like I was a
- 11:33criminal.
- 11:34And I thought, "Okay.
- 11:36Okay, it's ugly, but it's over."
- 11:38They caught me looking, they got rid of
- 11:40me, I'll find another job, I'll be fine.
- 11:43She looked up.
- 11:45And then it started. Her apartment got
- 11:47broken into. Nothing taken. Nothing
- 11:50except her laptop, her backup drive, and
- 11:52every notebook she owned. Her phone
- 11:55started doing things phones don't do.
- 11:57Calls dropping, battery dying in an
- 11:59hour, a little green light coming on in
- 12:01the dark when she hadn't touched it. A
- 12:03car she didn't recognize started being
- 12:05wherever she was. Grocery store, gym,
- 12:10the end of her own street at 2:00 in the
- 12:11morning.
- 12:12"I went to the police," she said.
- 12:15"You want to know what they told me?"
- 12:16"Tell me," Jackson said. "They told me
- 12:18there was no evidence of a crime.
- 12:20That a break-in with nothing valuable
- 12:22taken happens all the time.
- 12:24That a phone acting up is a phone acting
- 12:26up.
- 12:27That a car parked on a public street is
- 12:30allowed to be parked on a public
- 12:31street."
- 12:33Her voice finally cracked right there,
- 12:34one small crack.
- 12:36"I sat across from a detective and I
- 12:38watched him decide I was a hysterical
- 12:40girl.
- 12:42I watched it happen on his face."
- 12:45"They got to him," Bear said. It wasn't
- 12:47a question either. "I don't know,"
- 12:49Sophie said.
- 12:50"That's the thing. I'll never know.
- 12:52Maybe they paid him. Maybe he was just
- 12:54tired and I was just paperwork.
- 12:56That's what makes it work. You can never
- 12:58prove which one it was. So, you start to
- 13:00feel crazy. You start to think maybe it
- 13:03is all in your head." She had a lawyer.
- 13:05The lawyer stopped calling back. She had
- 13:07a journalist, a real one at a real paper
- 13:10who had gotten excited, who had said,
- 13:11"This is huge. This is career making.
- 13:13Keep going." And then one morning that
- 13:15journalist sent her a two-line email
- 13:17saying the story couldn't be published
- 13:19and please don't contact this address
- 13:21again. Everyone who touched the truth,
- 13:23Sophie said, got quiet one by one like
- 13:26lights going out down a hallway. And I
- 13:28stood at the end of that hallway in the
- 13:30dark, and I finally understood what I
- 13:32was up against.
- 13:34She lifted her chin. It wasn't a
- 13:36company. Companies don't do this.
- 13:39This was a person.
- 13:40A person with enough money and enough
- 13:42reach to reach into a police station and
- 13:44a law office and a newsroom and turn off
- 13:46the lights.
- 13:47Nathan's voice came from behind her low
- 13:49and wrecked. And I couldn't do anything,
- 13:51he said to no one, to everyone. That's
- 13:54the part you don't understand. My whole
- 13:55life, my whole life I told this kid do
- 13:57what's right, even when nobody's
- 13:59watching.
- 14:00Even when it's hard.
- 14:01Especially when it's hard.
- 14:04He pressed the heel of his hand into one
- 14:05eye.
- 14:06And she did it. She did exactly what I
- 14:08raised her to do, and it nearly got her
- 14:11killed, and there was not one single
- 14:13thing her father could do to protect
- 14:15her.
- 14:16Not one.
- 14:17I fix engines. What do I know?
- 14:19Who was I going to call? Who listens to
- 14:21a mechanic? Dad, I watched my daughter
- 14:24stop believing in the world, Nathan
- 14:26said. That's what I watched.
- 14:31Three weeks I watched the light go out
- 14:33of her. And I remembered years back I
- 14:35did some work, some engine work for a
- 14:37fellow who rode. Good man, fair, paid
- 14:40cash.
- 14:41Shook my hand and he told me once he
- 14:43said, "Nathan, if you're ever in it so
- 14:45deep you got nowhere else to go,
- 14:47you find guys like us because we don't
- 14:50answer to the people who own everybody
- 14:52else."
- 14:53He looked up at Jackson. I didn't
- 14:55understand what he meant.
- 14:5620 years I didn't understand. I
- 14:58understand now. For a long moment nobody
- 15:01said anything. Then Megan Carter spoke
- 15:03and her voice had changed, gone precise,
- 15:05gone hard, the voice she used when she
- 15:07stopped being a friend and started being
- 15:08a lawyer.
- 15:09Sophie, I need you to answer me
- 15:11carefully.
- 15:13When you were fired, when they broke in,
- 15:15when they took your laptop and your
- 15:16drives and your notebooks, did they get
- 15:18it? The file, the evidence? Is it gone?
- 15:21And for the first time since she walked
- 15:23through the door,
- 15:25Sophie Walker smiled. It was not a happy
- 15:27smile. It was the smile of a person who
- 15:29has been underestimated her entire life
- 15:32and has finally finally been asked the
- 15:34right question.
- 15:35"Megan." She said she'd caught the name
- 15:38two filed everyone the moment she walked
- 15:40in. "Do I look like somebody who keeps
- 15:42her only copy on a laptop in her
- 15:43apartment?" The room seemed to lean in.
- 15:47"Open the bag." Jackson said.
- 15:49Sophie set the gray backpack on the pool
- 15:51table. Everyone crowded a step closer.
- 15:54She unzipped it slow. Inside were
- 15:56papers, folders, a hard drive, a laptop,
- 16:00stacks of it dense and official looking.
- 16:03The kind of documents that end careers
- 16:05and start prosecutions. Bear whistled
- 16:07low.
- 16:09"That's a lot of rope for one man to
- 16:10hang himself with."
- 16:12"Yeah." Sophie said. "It is." She zipped
- 16:15the bag back up. "And none of it's
- 16:17real." she said.
- 16:18The whistle died in Bear's throat.
- 16:21"What?" Lucas said. "I mean it's real
- 16:23paper." Sophie said.
- 16:25"Real folders, real formatting, real
- 16:27logos.
- 16:28If you handed it to a cop, he'd believe
- 16:30it for about 6 hours.
- 16:32But the actual numbers, the account
- 16:34chains, the names that matter.
- 16:36She patted the bag almost fondly. "It's
- 16:39bait. Every page of it. I built it in
- 16:41one night after they took my real drives
- 16:44because I knew the second they came into
- 16:46my apartment, I knew they weren't going
- 16:47to stop until they were sure the
- 16:49evidence was destroyed. And people like
- 16:51that,
- 16:52they can't rest until they're holding it
- 16:54in their hands and watching it burn."
- 16:57Megan was staring at her now with
- 16:58something that had crossed all the way
- 17:00over into respect.
- 17:02"So you built them something to find."
- 17:04Megan said slowly. "You built them a
- 17:05copy to steal." "I built them a copy to
- 17:08chase." Sophie said. "As long as they
- 17:10think the real file is in this bag, they
- 17:13think it's in one place. They think if
- 17:15they get the bag, they get me and it's
- 17:17over. They have no idea. She looked
- 17:19around the room at every hard face
- 17:21pointed at her.
- 17:23The real thing is in three places, none
- 17:25of them will ever guess. Set on a timer,
- 17:28and if anything happens to me, if I go
- 17:30quiet for more than a certain number of
- 17:32hours, it releases itself to
- 17:34investigators, to reporters who don't
- 17:37work for him, to the federal government,
- 17:39all at once, automatically, with no way
- 17:42to stop it. The silence this time was
- 17:44different.
- 17:45It wasn't fear anymore.
- 17:47It was all.
- 17:49Sweetheart, Bear said, and then caught
- 17:50himself.
- 17:51Miss, ma'am, whatever you want me to,
- 17:53that is the coldest thing I have ever
- 17:55heard a 19-year-old say, and I have been
- 17:58shot twice.
- 17:59Sophie almost laughed. Almost. I'm not
- 18:02brave, she said quietly. I want
- 18:04everybody in this room to understand
- 18:06that because my dad keeps looking at me
- 18:08like I'm brave, and I'm not.
- 18:10I'm terrified. I've been terrified for 3
- 18:13weeks. I flinch when the mailman comes.
- 18:16But being terrified and being finished
- 18:18are two different things, and I decided
- 18:20a while ago I would rather die finished
- 18:22than live quiet.
- 18:24She looked at her father when she said
- 18:26it.
- 18:27I'm sorry, Dad. I know that's not what
- 18:29you wanted to hear. Nathan couldn't
- 18:31answer. He just put his hand over his
- 18:33mouth and looked at his daughter like he
- 18:35was seeing her for the very first time.
- 18:38Jackson Cole had heard enough.
- 18:40He walked to the pool table. He looked
- 18:42at the pa He looked at the girl. He
- 18:45looked for a long moment at the father
- 18:47standing wrecked and helpless behind
- 18:48her.
- 18:49And then he did the thing that would set
- 18:51the entire rest of the night in motion.
- 18:53He picked up the backpack, and he held
- 18:55it out to Bear. Lock this in the office
- 18:57safe, he said. If somebody wants it bad
- 19:00enough to die for it, let's make it real
- 19:02hard to reach.
- 19:04Raven, Bear said low. Are you sure about
- 19:06this?
- 19:07Once we take that bag, we're in. There's
- 19:09no putting it back.
- 19:11I heard you the first time, Bear. I'm
- 19:13saying it again because it's my job to
- 19:15say it again. That car out there, those
- 19:18aren't kids. A man who can reach into a
- 19:20police station can reach in here.
- 19:23We take her in and by sunrise we could
- 19:25have every kind of trouble parked on our
- 19:27lawn, legal, illegal, and the kind that
- 19:30doesn't have a name over a girl none of
- 19:33us knew existed an hour ago.
- 19:35The room waited. This was the moment.
- 19:37Everyone knew it was the moment. Jackson
- 19:39turned to face the whole clubhouse. He
- 19:41was quiet for a second. And when he
- 19:44spoke he didn't raise his voice because
- 19:45men like Jackson never have to. Let me
- 19:48tell you what I heard tonight, he said.
- 19:50I heard a working man knock on our door
- 19:52at midnight because every honest door in
- 19:54this town got slammed in his face. I
- 19:56heard a girl who did everything right,
- 19:58everything they tell kids to do,
- 20:01everything we wish our own kids would
- 20:02do, and I heard how the world thanked
- 20:05her for it. They fired her. They robbed
- 20:07her. They followed her home. They made
- 20:10her feel crazy. And when she went to the
- 20:12people who are supposed to protect her,
- 20:14those people looked at her and decided
- 20:16she was nobody. He let that sit.
- 20:19Now I've been nobody, Jackson said.
- 20:21Every man in this room has been nobody.
- 20:23That's half the reason we're in this
- 20:25room and not out there. Society looked
- 20:27at each of us one time and decided we
- 20:29didn't count.
- 20:30That we were trouble. That the world
- 20:32would be better off if we just stayed
- 20:34quiet. His voice dropped.
- 20:37So I want to know something. If we us of
- 20:39all people, if we look at that girl and
- 20:41decide she's nobody too,
- 20:44then what in God's name was the point of
- 20:45any of it? Nobody said anything.
- 20:48She stays, Jackson said. That's the end
- 20:51of it. She stays here, she's safe here,
- 20:53and whoever's sitting in that car with
- 20:55their lights off is welcome to drive up
- 20:57and explain to my face exactly what
- 21:00business they think they have with a
- 21:0219-year-old girl.
- 21:04He turned to the window, to the dark, to
- 21:05the enemy he couldn't see yet. And I'll
- 21:08be real curious to hear it.
- 21:10Lucas Reed stood up off his stool. "I'm
- 21:12in. You don't get a vote, kid. You're a
- 21:14prospect." Bear grumbled, but he was
- 21:16already moving toward the office with
- 21:18the bag in his hands, which was its own
- 21:20kind of vote.
- 21:21>> [snorts]
- 21:21>> Ghost at the window said nothing at all,
- 21:23but he reached over and slid the
- 21:25deadbolt home with a sound like a rifle
- 21:27bolt. And that was Ghost's vote, and
- 21:30everyone heard it. Megan put her hand on
- 21:32Sophie's shoulder. "Whatever you built,"
- 21:34she said,
- 21:35"I want to see it in the morning. All of
- 21:37it. Because if it's half as good as it
- 21:39sounds, I know exactly who to hand it
- 21:41to, and I know exactly how to make it
- 21:44stick. You're not alone on the legal
- 21:46side anymore.
- 21:47You hear me? You are done being alone."
- 21:50And Sophie Walker, who had not let
- 21:52herself lean on a single human being in
- 21:543 weeks, who had held herself upright
- 21:56through the fear and the doubt and the
- 21:58awful crawling loneliness of not being
- 22:00believed, Sophie Walker's chin trembled
- 22:03just once, and she nodded, and she did
- 22:05not cry because she had promised herself
- 22:07she wouldn't cry until it was over.
- 22:10It was not over. Because at that exact
- 22:12moment Ghost spoke from the window in
- 22:14the same flat careful voice he'd used
- 22:16all night, and what he said turned
- 22:17everyone to stone.
- 22:19Raven.
- 22:20Yeah.
- 22:21"That car on the county road," Ghost
- 22:23said, "it's not one car anymore."
- 22:25Jackson crossed the room in four steps
- 22:27and looked out through the glass over
- 22:29Ghost's shoulder into the dark.
- 22:31And there out past the fence line out on
- 22:33the road that led to the only door in
- 22:34town that had said yes, where 2 minutes
- 22:37ago there had been a single set of
- 22:38parking lights sitting cold and patient,
- 22:41there were three. Then as they watched
- 22:43the fourth set of headlights swung slow
- 22:45around the far bend and rolled up to
- 22:47join the others.
- 22:49Big vehicles. Heavy.
- 22:51Moving with the unhurried confidence of
- 22:53people who are not worried about being
- 22:55seen because they have never once in
- 22:58their lives had to be afraid of anyone.
- 23:00Four black SUVs lined up on the road,
- 23:02engines running, waiting. They weren't
- 23:05hiding anymore. Nathan made a sound low
- 23:07in his throat. Sophie went absolutely
- 23:09white and reached out and gripped the
- 23:11edge of the pool table.
- 23:13"How did they?" she whispered. "The bag
- 23:16The bag's not even How did they know so
- 23:18fast?" "Because somebody told them."
- 23:21Bear said grimly, coming back out of the
- 23:22office. "That's the only way. Somebody
- 23:26knew you'd run and somebody knew where."
- 23:28"Nobody knew we were coming here."
- 23:30Nathan said. "I didn't know we were
- 23:32coming here until an hour ago. I didn't
- 23:34tell a soul. I don't I don't even have
- 23:36anybody to tell."
- 23:39"Then how'd they follow you?" Lucas
- 23:40asked. And Sophie's face changed.
- 23:43It changed slow, like something cold
- 23:45going down her spine, like a person
- 23:47doing a terrible piece of math and
- 23:49arriving at an answer they don't want.
- 23:51She reached into the pocket of her
- 23:53hoodie and she pulled out her phone, the
- 23:55phone she'd been carrying for 3 weeks,
- 23:57the phone that dropped calls, that died
- 23:59in an hour, that lit up green in the
- 24:00dark when nobody was touching it and she
- 24:03set it on the pool table and stared at
- 24:05it like it was a live snake. "It was
- 24:06never my apartment they were watching."
- 24:09she said.
- 24:10Her voice had gone strange and hollow.
- 24:12"It was never the car following me. That
- 24:14was theater. That was decoration.
- 24:17They wanted me to see the car so I'd
- 24:20need the I'd focus on the car."
- 24:23"Sophie." Megan said carefully. "What
- 24:25are you saying?" "I'm saying they didn't
- 24:27follow us here." Sophie looked up and
- 24:29her eyes were huge. "They've been able
- 24:31to find me the whole time. Every minute
- 24:33of every day for 3 weeks. My phone it's
- 24:36not broken. It's working perfectly. It's
- 24:39doing exactly what they built it to do."
- 24:42She pushed it away from herself across
- 24:44the felt like she couldn't stand to
- 24:46touch it. "I led them here. I led them
- 24:48right to your door. Every back road my
- 24:50dad took, every double back, it didn't
- 24:53matter I had the tracker in my own
- 24:55pocket the entire time and I never I
- 24:57never even Okay, Jackson said, "Okay,
- 25:00everybody breathe."
- 25:01"You don't understand," Sophie said. And
- 25:04now finally, for the first time all
- 25:06night, the fear won and her voice broke
- 25:08wide open.
- 25:10"If they have my phone, then they've had
- 25:12it since the beginning, which means
- 25:14they've heard everything, every plan,
- 25:16every location, every"
- 25:19She stopped. All the blood drained out
- 25:21of her face. "Oh god."
- 25:23"What?" Nathan said. "Sophie." "What?"
- 25:27She turned to her father and when she
- 25:28spoke, it was almost too quiet to hear.
- 25:31"The fail-safe," she whispered. "The
- 25:33three locations, the timer that releases
- 25:36everything if I go quiet."
- 25:38Her hands were shaking so hard now, she
- 25:40pressed them flat against the table. "I
- 25:42set it up on that phone, Dad. I built
- 25:44the whole thing on that phone, which
- 25:46means they don't just know where I am."
- 25:49>> [clears throat]
- 25:49>> She looked at the four sets of
- 25:50headlights burning out in the dark.
- 25:52"They know it exists," she said. "They
- 25:54know about the fail-safe. They know it's
- 25:56the only thing I've got, and they know
- 25:58exactly how much time they have before
- 26:00it goes off."
- 26:02Out on the county road, all four sets of
- 26:04headlights came on at once. High beams
- 26:07blinding, aimed straight at the
- 26:08clubhouse windows like a wall of white
- 26:10light. And then slow and certain, the
- 26:13first black SUV pulled off the road,
- 26:15turned into the long gravel drive, and
- 26:18started rolling toward the door. Jackson
- 26:20Cole watched it come.
- 26:21He didn't move. He didn't blink.
- 26:24Behind him, 11 people held their breath.
- 26:26A mechanic and his daughter stood at the
- 26:28center of a storm none of them had asked
- 26:30for, and a 19-year-old girl's dead phone
- 26:33lay glowing faintly on the green felt,
- 26:35having betrayed her from her own pocket
- 26:37the entire time.
- 26:38Jackson reached back without looking and
- 26:40put one steady hand on Sophie's
- 26:42shoulder.
- 26:43"Then we'd better make sure," he said
- 26:45quietly, "that you don't go quiet." The
- 26:47SUVs' headlights swept across the front
- 26:50of the clubhouse.
- 26:51And somewhere in the lead vehicle, a man
- 26:53who had smiled at Sophie on her first
- 26:54day of work, who had remembered her
- 26:56birthday, who had asked about her father
- 26:58over lunch, leaned forward in his seat
- 27:01to get his first look at the last door
- 27:03in town that had dared to tell him no.
- 27:05The lead SUV rolled halfway up the
- 27:07gravel drive and stopped. It didn't rush
- 27:09the door. It didn't have to. It just sat
- 27:13there with its high beams flooding the
- 27:14front windows, and that was worse than
- 27:16rushing because it meant whoever was
- 27:19inside felt like they had all the time
- 27:21in the world.
- 27:22Ghost, Jackson said without turning
- 27:24around. Read me. One vehicle up the
- 27:26drive, three holding on the road.
- 27:29Ghost's voice hadn't changed all night,
- 27:31and it didn't change now.
- 27:33Doors haven't opened. They're letting us
- 27:35stew. Somebody in that lead truck wants
- 27:38us scared before they even say hello.
- 27:40It's working, Lucas said quietly, and
- 27:43nobody laughed because it was working on
- 27:45all of them.
- 27:46Sophie was still staring at her phone on
- 27:48the pool table like it might come alive
- 27:51and bite.
- 27:52Turn it off, Nathan said to her.
- 27:55Baby, turn it off. Throw it out. Smash
- 27:57it.
- 27:58No. Sophie's hands shot out and covered
- 28:01the phone before her father could grab
- 28:02it. No, Dad, listen to me. If I kill
- 28:05this phone, I go dark, and I told you
- 28:08what happens when I go dark.
- 28:10The fail-safe, Megan said. The fail-safe
- 28:13releases.
- 28:15Yeah.
- 28:16Sophie pulled the phone back toward
- 28:17herself, protective now, cradling the
- 28:19thing that had betrayed her.
- 28:21But that timer's set for hours from now.
- 28:24If it goes off right this second half of
- 28:26it's not ready, the federal contact
- 28:29isn't confirmed,
- 28:31two of the three drops haven't fully
- 28:32synced.
- 28:33She was talking fast, the words
- 28:35tumbling.
- 28:36If I flatline this phone right now, I
- 28:38don't detonate a bomb. I light a wet
- 28:40firecracker, and then they know it fired
- 28:43early, and they know it fired weak, and
- 28:46they've got all night to clean it up
- 28:48before anybody important is even awake
- 28:50to read it. Megan's eyes narrowed. How
- 28:52long until it's ready to fire clean?
- 28:54Sophie looked at the little clock on the
- 28:56screen. Her jaw tightened.
- 28:59"90 minutes?" she said. "Maybe less, but
- 29:02not now. Not yet."
- 29:04"So, we've got 90 minutes," Bear said,
- 29:06"to keep a 19-year-old girl's phone
- 29:08alive and awake in a building surrounded
- 29:10by four trucks full of people who want
- 29:13it dead."
- 29:14"That's about the size of it," Sophie
- 29:16said. Bear rubbed a hand down his face.
- 29:18"Raven, I want it on the record I raised
- 29:20concerns." "It's on the record, Bear."
- 29:23"Good. Now, what do we wait Before
- 29:25Jackson could answer, the passenger door
- 29:27of the lead SUV opened.
- 29:29Everybody went still. A man stepped out.
- 29:32Not the CEO, not yet, though nobody in
- 29:34the room knew to expect him yet. This
- 29:36was a big man in a dark jacket, the kind
- 29:39of build that came from a gym and not
- 29:41from work, and he stood in the wash of
- 29:43his own headlights and buttoned one
- 29:45button of his coat slow, like a man who
- 29:47wanted to be watched doing it.
- 29:49Then he started walking toward the door.
- 29:51"He's coming to knock," Lucas said
- 29:53disbelieving. "He's actually going to
- 29:55knock." "Of course he is," Jackson said.
- 29:58"He wants to look reasonable. He wants
- 30:01us to open the door so that later,
- 30:02whatever happens, he can say we invited
- 30:05him in."
- 30:06He turned to the room. "So, here's how
- 30:08this goes. Nobody touches him. Nobody
- 30:11touches him unless he touches one of us
- 30:13first. We are the reasonable ones
- 30:15tonight.
- 30:16Whatever this is, it doesn't start with
- 30:18us.
- 30:20Everybody hear me." A low chorus of
- 30:22yeah. "Megan, you're my mouth. You know
- 30:25the law better than any of these men,
- 30:27and you don't scare, and I need somebody
- 30:30at that door who can make him nervous
- 30:32with a word instead of a fist. Bear,
- 30:34you're my muscle right behind her. Say
- 30:36nothing.
- 30:37Go stay on the window. You're my eyes on
- 30:40the rest of them. Lucas,
- 30:41I know. I know I'm a prospect. I don't
- 30:44get a vote. You get a job. You stay with
- 30:47Sophie and her father in the back office
- 30:49and you do not leave them for any
- 30:51reason.
- 30:52That phone stays alive. That girl stays
- 30:54breathing and if it comes down to it,
- 30:57you're the last body between them and
- 30:59that door.
- 31:00Can you do that? Lucas swallowed. He was
- 31:0323.
- 31:04He joined this club because his life had
- 31:06been going nowhere and these men had
- 31:07been the first ones to look at that him
- 31:10like he was worth something. He'd never
- 31:12done anything harder than a bar fight.
- 31:14Yeah, he said, I can do that.
- 31:16Good man.
- 31:17The knock came. Three raps, unhurried,
- 31:20almost polite. Megan looked at Jackson.
- 31:22Jackson nodded. And Megan Carter, 5'4"
- 31:25in her boots, opened the heavy steel
- 31:26door and stood in it like she owned
- 31:28every inch of the building behind her.
- 31:31Little late for visitors, she said. The
- 31:34big man smiled. Up close, he had a wide
- 31:36easy face, the kind that had gotten him
- 31:38out of a lot of rooms in his life.
- 31:40Ma'am, he said, I'm sorry to bother
- 31:42folks at this hour. My name's Reese. I
- 31:45work security for a business concern
- 31:47cern
- 31:48here in the county and we've got
- 31:50ourselves a real simple
- 31:52misunderstanding. I'm hoping we can
- 31:54clear up neighbor to neighbor.
- 31:56A business concern? Yes, ma'am.
- 31:59With four trucks?
- 32:00Reese's smile stayed put, but something
- 32:02behind it flickered. It's a large
- 32:05concern.
- 32:06Uh-huh.
- 32:07Megan didn't move from the doorway. And
- 32:09what's the misunderstanding, Mr. Reese?
- 32:12There's a young lady, Reese said, Sophie
- 32:14Walker. She used to work for us. She
- 32:17left under some difficult circumstances.
- 32:19Mental health. Unfortunately, we don't
- 32:21like to say too much out of respect. She
- 32:23took some company property when she
- 32:25left.
- 32:26Confidential material and her family's
- 32:29real worried about her because she's not
- 32:31well and she's got herself convinced of
- 32:33some things that just plain aren't true.
- 32:35He spread his hands, all sympathy.
- 32:37We got a call she might have come this
- 32:39way, so we'd like to bring her home,
- 32:41safe return the property, and let
- 32:43everybody get back to their night.
- 32:45That's all. That's the whole thing. It
- 32:47was a good story, delivered smooth. It
- 32:50had a beginning, a middle, and an exit
- 32:52ramp for everyone. And back in the
- 32:53office doorway, where she could hear
- 32:55every word, Sophie made a small broken
- 32:57sound.
- 32:58Mental health, she whispered.
- 33:01That's That's what they're going with.
- 33:03That
- 33:04I'm crazy. That's why the detective
- 33:06looked at me like that. They seeded it.
- 33:09They've been telling people I'm sick for
- 33:10weeks.
- 33:11Hey. Lucas caught her arm. Hey, look at
- 33:14me. Do you look sick to me? That's the
- 33:16whole point of it, Sophie said shaking.
- 33:19That's why it works. You can't argue
- 33:21your way out of crazy.
- 33:23The more you fight it, the crazier you
- 33:25look.
- 33:26She's not crazy, Nathan said, and his
- 33:29voice had gone somewhere Lucas hadn't
- 33:30heard it go all night, flat and dark and
- 33:33dangerous.
- 33:34My daughter is the sanest person in this
- 33:36county. And that man out there is
- 33:39standing on my clubhouse steps calling
- 33:41her sick to get her back in a car, and I
- 33:44swear to God Nathan. Lucas grabbed him,
- 33:47too. Both hands full of father and
- 33:49daughter now.
- 33:50Nathan, that's what they want. They want
- 33:52you to come out that door swinging so
- 33:54they can say the biker gang attacked a
- 33:56security guard who was doing a welfare
- 33:58check. That's the whole play. You go out
- 34:01there hot, you hand it to them.
- 34:03>> [snorts]
- 34:03>> You stay in here, they got nothing.
- 34:06He didn't know where the words were
- 34:07coming from. He just knew they were
- 34:09right.
- 34:11You raised her to do what is right, even
- 34:13when it's hard.
- 34:14Right, isn't that the whole thing?
- 34:17Well, this is the hard part. Standing
- 34:19still is the hard part. Nathan stared at
- 34:21him. His chest heaved. And slowly,
- 34:24slowly, he made himself stand still.
- 34:27Out at the door, Megan hadn't blinked
- 34:29and then blinked.
- 34:31That's a real touching story, Mr.
- 34:33Reese," she said. "You should write it
- 34:35down before you forget it. Now, here's
- 34:37mine. I'm an attorney, and what you just
- 34:40described, a group of armed men in
- 34:42unmarked vehicles surrounding a private
- 34:44residence at 1:00 in the morning to
- 34:46remove a legal adult against her will,
- 34:48has a name. Several names, actually.
- 34:51Would you like to hear them?" Reese's
- 34:53smile finally slipped. "Nobody said
- 34:55anything about against her will. You
- 34:57said bring her home safe," Megan said.
- 35:00"She's 19. She's an adult. She's got no
- 35:03warrant out and no order against her
- 35:05that you've shown me. So, if she doesn't
- 35:08want to go, then bringing her anywhere
- 35:10is kidnapping, and every man in those
- 35:12four trucks is a co-conspirator, and I
- 35:15have already written down every plate on
- 35:17that road."
- 35:18She hadn't, but she said it like
- 35:20scripture. "So, why don't you go on back
- 35:22and tell your business concern that the
- 35:24young lady is a guest here. She's
- 35:26exactly where she wants to be, and if
- 35:29her family's truly worried, they're
- 35:31welcome to call the sheriff and have him
- 35:33come do the welfare check himself in
- 35:35daylight with a badge." That was the
- 35:37mini detonation, and it landed. Reese's
- 35:40jaw worked because he couldn't call the
- 35:41sheriff.
- 35:43That was the one card Megan had read
- 35:44perfectly. A man who could truly cleanly
- 35:47involve the law
- 35:48would have led with the law. He'd have
- 35:50come with paper. He came with trucks
- 35:52instead, which told her everything.
- 35:54"You don't want to do this?" Reese said,
- 35:56and the friendliness was gone now.
- 35:58"Funny," Megan said. "I was about to
- 36:00tell you the same thing." She stepped
- 36:02back and shut the door in his face. The
- 36:04deadbolt slammed home like a gunshot.
- 36:07For 1 second, nobody breathed. Then,
- 36:09Bear let out a huge lungful of air.
- 36:12"Counselor, remind me to never, ever get
- 36:14on your bad side." "He'll be back,"
- 36:16Megan said.
- 36:17She was steady, but her hand when she
- 36:19lowered it from the bolt had the
- 36:20faintest tremor.
- 36:22That was round one. He was measuring us.
- 36:25He wanted to see if we'd fold or panic
- 36:27or hand her over.
- 36:28We didn't. So, now he goes back to
- 36:30whoever's really in charge and they
- 36:32figure out something worse.
- 36:35She looked at Jackson. We bought
- 36:37minutes. Not more.
- 36:39Minutes is what we need, Jackson said.
- 36:42How long now, Sophie?
- 36:44Sophie checked the phone. 71 minutes.
- 36:47Then we hold this building for 71
- 36:48minutes. Jackson turned to the room. And
- 36:51we do it smart. But holding it turned
- 36:53out to be the easy part to say. Because
- 36:55the first thing that went wrong was the
- 36:56lights. They didn't flicker.
- 36:59They just died all at once, the whole
- 37:01clubhouse dropping into black between
- 37:03one heartbeat and the next, and Sophie's
- 37:05phone screen suddenly the brightest
- 37:07thing in the building. They cut the
- 37:09power, Ghost said from the window
- 37:10unbothered.
- 37:12Reese made a call. Somebody at the pole.
- 37:15Generators in the back. Bear said
- 37:17already moving. Give me 2 minutes.
- 37:20The phone, Sophie said and her voice
- 37:21climbed. The phone needs to charge. It's
- 37:24at 40%. If it dies before the timer's
- 37:26ready.
- 37:28It won't die, Lucas said. Generators
- 37:30coming. Breathe.
- 37:32You keep telling me to breathe. Because
- 37:34you keep forgetting to. And in the dark,
- 37:36absurdly, Sophie laughed in one short,
- 37:39cracked, half-hysterical laugh. And it
- 37:41broke something loose in her chest, and
- 37:43Lucas realized that keeping her talking,
- 37:46keeping her almost laughing was maybe
- 37:48the most important job in the building.
- 37:51The generator cough caught roared.
- 37:53Lights came back up, dim and yellow,
- 37:55running on emergency power now, half the
- 37:57building in shadow.
- 37:59Bear came back wiping his hands. We're
- 38:01good for hours on the tank, he said.
- 38:04They want to play the power game, they
- 38:05picked the wrong garage. We got fuel for
- 38:07days.
- 38:09Charge the phone, Jackson said. Ghost,
- 38:11what are they doing?
- 38:12Repositioning. Two trucks off the road
- 38:14now coming up the fence line slow.
- 38:16They're not rushing the door.
- 38:18Ghost paused. They're spreading out,
- 38:21boxing the property. Somebody out
- 38:23there's done this before. Reese? No,
- 38:25Reese is muscle. This is a thinker.
- 38:29Ghost finally turned from the window,
- 38:30and even his flat voice had an edge to
- 38:33it now.
- 38:34Raven, this isn't a snatch and grab
- 38:36anymore. When they cut the power, they
- 38:38told me
- 38:39they're not trying to grab a runaway,
- 38:42they're laying siege. And you don't lay
- 38:44siege to a place just to get a girl
- 38:47back.
- 38:48You lay siege when you've decided nobody
- 38:50inside walks out able to talk about it.
- 38:53The room went cold. Nathan stepped
- 38:55forward. You're saying? I'm saying
- 38:57whoever's running this decided a while
- 38:59ago that it ends tonight. Ghost said,
- 39:02one way or another, and now they're just
- 39:04deciding how.
- 39:06That was the twist that changed the
- 39:07temperature of the whole night, the
- 39:09moment they all understood this was no
- 39:10longer about a backpack, or even about
- 39:13Sophie. It was about witnesses.
- 39:16Everybody in the building was now a
- 39:17person who had seen too much. Then we
- 39:20make sure it ends their way, losing,
- 39:22Jackson said, and there was iron in it.
- 39:24Sophie, talk to me about this fail safe.
- 39:27Really talk to me, because that thing
- 39:29might be the only weapon in this
- 39:30building that matters.
- 39:32Everything I've got is fists in this
- 39:34building.
- 39:35You've got the thing they're actually
- 39:36afraid of.
- 39:37So tell me exactly what happens when
- 39:40that timer hits zero.
- 39:41Sophie sat down on the edge of a chair,
- 39:44the phone charging on her knee, and she
- 39:45made herself think through the fear.
- 39:47When it fires clean, she said, it sends
- 39:49three packages at once. Package one goes
- 39:52to a federal investigator, not local
- 39:54federal, out of state, somebody
- 39:56Brighten's money can't reach. Package
- 39:59two goes to four different journalists
- 40:01at four different papers in three
- 40:03different cities, so they can't buy off
- 40:05all of them fast enough. Package three
- 40:08goes public.
- 40:09Straight to the internet, uncontrolled.
- 40:12No takedown, no negotiation, no killing
- 40:15the story.
- 40:16Once it's out, it's out forever.
- 40:19She looked up.
- 40:20The whole design is too big to bury, too
- 40:22fast to stop, too many places to catch.
- 40:25The only window they ever had to stop it
- 40:27was to get to me before it fired. And
- 40:30that window is She checked the phone, 63
- 40:33minutes long. So, they know that number
- 40:35two, Megan said slowly. If they bugged
- 40:37your phone, they've watched you build
- 40:39this. They know they've got about an
- 40:41hour.
- 40:42Yeah.
- 40:43Then they're not going to wait 63
- 40:45minutes politely on the lawn, Megan
- 40:48said. They're going to come for that
- 40:49phone soon, because the second that
- 40:52timer runs out, they've lost and they
- 40:53know it. As if the world itself wanted
- 40:56to prove her right, Reese's voice came
- 40:58through the door,
- 40:59amplified now, some kind of bullhorn
- 41:01loud enough to fill the whole building.
- 41:03Folks, let's try this again. We know the
- 41:05girl's in there. We know what she's
- 41:07carrying, and we know about the little
- 41:10timer she set up.
- 41:12A pause, deliberate, letting that land.
- 41:14So, here's the new offer, and it's the
- 41:16only one you're going to get. Send her
- 41:18out with the phone in the next 10
- 41:20minutes, and everybody else in that
- 41:22building goes home tonight and forgets
- 41:24they ever met her.
- 41:25That's a real generous offer for a bunch
- 41:27of men harboring a fugitive. You keep
- 41:30her, though. You keep that phone 1
- 41:32minute past the deadline, and we stop
- 41:34being neighbors. The bullhorn clicked
- 41:36off. Sophie had gone white again. They
- 41:39said the timer. They said it out loud.
- 41:42They know
- 41:43We knew they knew, Jackson said calmly.
- 41:46Nothing changed. Everything changed.
- 41:48They just told the whole club that all
- 41:50they have to do to be safe is hand me
- 41:52over.
- 41:53Sophie stood up so fast the chair
- 41:55scraped back. She turned to the room to
- 41:57all these strangers, and her voice
- 41:58shook.
- 41:59He's right. That's the smart play.
- 42:02Give me to them. He said it, everybody
- 42:04else goes home.
- 42:05You don't owe me anything. You met me an
- 42:07hour ago. My dad dragged me to your door
- 42:09and put your whole family in danger for
- 42:11a girl you don't even sit down, Jackson
- 42:14said. I'm serious. If you just Sophie
- 42:17Jackson didn't raise his voice. He never
- 42:19did.
- 42:20Sit down.
- 42:21She sat because there was something in
- 42:23the way he said it that you obeyed.
- 42:26Jackson looked around the room.
- 42:27>> [clears throat]
- 42:28>> He looked at every face. Then he looked
- 42:29back at the girl. You think that's the
- 42:31first time somebody stood on a lawn and
- 42:33offered us a deal to give up one of our
- 42:35own, he said.
- 42:36You think that's new, sweetheart? That's
- 42:38every year of my life. Somebody's always
- 42:40at the door with a reasonable offer to
- 42:43trade one person for a little safety.
- 42:45You know what we learned? The people who
- 42:47take that deal don't get safe. They just
- 42:50get to be the kind of people who take
- 42:52that deal forever. And you can't ever
- 42:55wash that off. He crouched down in front
- 42:57of her office chair so they were
- 42:58eye-to-eye with Shawn.
- 43:00You're ours now, he said simply. That
- 43:02happened the second Bear locked your bag
- 43:04in that safe. I know it doesn't make
- 43:06sense to you. You don't have to
- 43:08understand it. But it's true and there's
- 43:10not a man in this building who'd trade
- 43:12you for one more sunrise.
- 43:14So stop offering. It's insulting. Sophie
- 43:17stared at him.
- 43:18And then finally 3 weeks of it caught up
- 43:20with her all at once and she put her
- 43:22face in her hands and she cried. Not
- 43:24delicate, not pretty, the ugly heaving
- 43:27kind you do when you've been holding it
- 43:29too long and Nathan crossed the room and
- 43:31dropped to his knees and wrapped her up
- 43:33and for a moment the whole siege just
- 43:36paused in the presence of that. Bear
- 43:38cleared his throat rough.
- 43:40Well, now I got to go hit somebody, he
- 43:42muttered and turned away and wiped his
- 43:44eye where he thought nobody could see
- 43:46and Ghost at the window saw and said
- 43:48nothing.
- 43:49The moment didn't last because moments
- 43:50like that never got to last that night.
- 43:53Movement, Ghost said. Two on foot coming
- 43:56up the east side, low, fast. They're not
- 43:58waiting for the 10 minutes.
- 44:00Course they're not, Bear said already
- 44:02grabbing a length of pipe. The 10
- 44:04minutes was theater. Back door, Jackson
- 44:07snapped. Bear ghost on the back door.
- 44:10Lucas, you're still on. Sophie, do not
- 44:12move from her. Megan, kill the office
- 44:14lights so they can't see the phones glow
- 44:16from outside. Nathan.
- 44:18I'm not hiding, Nathan said. Don't ask
- 44:21me to hide while men come for my
- 44:22daughter. Give me something to hold and
- 44:25put me somewhere.
- 44:26Jackson looked at him for half a second,
- 44:28then he pulled a wrench off the wall and
- 44:30put it in Nathan's hand. Hallway, he
- 44:32said. You're the last door before the
- 44:34office. Nobody gets past you.
- 44:36Nobody gets past me, Nathan repeated and
- 44:39gripped the wrench. And for the first
- 44:41time in 3 weeks, he didn't feel useless.
- 44:43He felt like a father with a job.
- 44:46What happened next happened fast and
- 44:48ugly. The two men came in through the
- 44:50back. The lock gave, the door swung, and
- 44:52Bear was there and Bear was a mountain.
- 44:54>> [clears throat]
- 44:54>> And the first man through learned that
- 44:56immediately and horribly. There was
- 44:58shouting, the wet crack of the pipe, a
- 45:00body hitting the floor. The second man
- 45:02got two steps in and Ghost took him down
- 45:05without a wasted motion, quiet and
- 45:07total, the way he'd been trained in a
- 45:09life he never talked about.
- 45:1120 seconds. Both men on the ground
- 45:13groaning, disarmed. That's two, Bear
- 45:16panted. Ghost, tie them. Raven, we're
- 45:19not going to win this one at the doors.
- 45:21Two more just tried the front while
- 45:23these two came the back. They're going
- 45:25to keep poking till they find the soft
- 45:27spot.
- 45:28How long, Sophie? Jackson called. 51
- 45:31minutes.
- 45:3251 minutes of this, Bear said. We can't
- 45:35hold every door for 51 minutes, Raven.
- 45:38There's too many ways in and not enough
- 45:40of us. And that was when Lucas Reed, 23
- 45:43years old prospect, the man who didn't
- 45:45get a vote, said the thing that changed
- 45:47the plan.
- 45:48Then let's stop defending the whole
- 45:49building, he said.
- 45:51Everyone looked at him. We keep trying
- 45:53to hold every door, Lucas said, talking
- 45:56fast, the idea coming together as he
- 45:57said it.
- 45:58That's their game. Spread us thin, but
- 46:01we don't need the whole building. We
- 46:03need one room. We need the phone to stay
- 46:05alive and connected for 51 minutes. So,
- 46:08we give up the building. We fall back to
- 46:11the office cinder block walls, one door,
- 46:13one window. We can hold one room. Let
- 46:16them have the pool table and the bar.
- 46:18Who cares? As long as that phone's got
- 46:21power and signal in a room, we control,
- 46:24the clock keeps running, and they lose
- 46:25anyway. Silence.
- 46:27Then, Jackson smiled slow.
- 46:29Kid, you just earned your vote. Fall
- 46:32back to the office, Bear called already
- 46:34dragging the tide men. Everybody, now,
- 46:37Raven.
- 46:38Do it. Sophie, Nathan, Lucas, Megan,
- 46:40office now. Ghost, Bear, we fall back
- 46:42last, and we make him work for every
- 46:44inch of hallway.
- 46:46Jackson grabbed a chair. Let's make it
- 46:48expensive. They fell back. Room by room,
- 46:51they gave up the building, and it was
- 46:53the right call, because the moment they
- 46:55concentrated, they stopped being easy to
- 46:57flank.
- 46:58Five bodies in a locked cinder block
- 47:00room.
- 47:01>> [clears throat]
- 47:01>> One door, one window, and a phone at 68%
- 47:05glowing on the desk counting down.
- 47:07Reese's men flooded in through the back
- 47:09and front. Now that the doors were
- 47:11undefended, boots on the clubhouse
- 47:12floor. And for a minute, there was chaos
- 47:15in the dark hallway, Bear and Ghost
- 47:17falling back step by step. The crack of
- 47:20the pipe, the grunt of bodies until the
- 47:22two of them dove into the office and
- 47:24slammed the steel door. And Bear threw
- 47:26the bolt, and the whole thing shuddered
- 47:28as something big hit it from the other
- 47:30side. That'll hold, Bear panted leaning
- 47:33against it. That's a fire door. That's
- 47:35the same door up front. They're not
- 47:37coming through that without a torch.
- 47:40Bang! The door shuddered again.
- 47:42You sure about that? Lucas said.
- 47:44Reasonably.
- 47:46Bang! Getting less sure, Bear admitted.
- 47:49Sophie was hunched over the phone. 44
- 47:52minutes. 44 minutes behind a steel door,
- 47:55Jackson said. We can do 44 minutes
- 47:58standing on our heads." He looked around
- 48:00the little room at the six of them
- 48:01crammed in it and for [clears throat] a
- 48:02second something almost like calm
- 48:05settled over him.
- 48:06"Everybody breathe. They can't get
- 48:08through that door fast. The clock's
- 48:10running. We just have to be patient and
- 48:12boring and boring wins."
- 48:14And then Sophie's phone rang. Everybody
- 48:16froze. Not the timer, a call. An
- 48:19incoming call.
- 48:20The screen lit up a number with no name
- 48:22buzzing against the desk in the sudden
- 48:24silence.
- 48:25"Don't answer it." Nathan said
- 48:27instantly. "Wait." Sophie stared at the
- 48:29screen. "Wait. Wait. If I don't answer
- 48:31they'll say I went dark and know that
- 48:33doesn't Dad. If they wanted me to go
- 48:35dark they wouldn't call."
- 48:38She was thinking out loud fast. "They're
- 48:40calling because they want something they
- 48:42can only get by talking, which means
- 48:44talking helps me not them."
- 48:47She looked at Jackson. "I think I should
- 48:49answer." "Your call." Jackson said,
- 48:51"Literally.
- 48:52But if you answer you keep him talking
- 48:54and you don't give him one single thing.
- 48:57Every second he talks is a second closer
- 48:59to zero.
- 49:01Make him waste his own clock."
- 49:03Sophie's hand hovered over the phone.
- 49:05She looked at her father who shook his
- 49:07head and at Jackson who didn't. And then
- 49:10she made her choice and she answered and
- 49:12she put it on speaker so the room could
- 49:14hear.
- 49:15"Hello Sophie." The voice that came out
- 49:17of that phone was warm. That was the
- 49:20terrible thing. It wasn't Reese's flat
- 49:22menace. It was warm and kind and
- 49:24familiar and every hair on Sophie's arms
- 49:27stood straight up because she knew it.
- 49:30She knew it in her bones. She'd heard it
- 49:32say welcome to the family on her first
- 49:34day and how's your dad over lunch and
- 49:36keep going. You're doing great work
- 49:38right before he took her file and ended
- 49:40her life. Sophie sweetheart, are you
- 49:43there? It's Daniel." And Nathan Walker's
- 49:45face went absolutely gray because he
- 49:47knew that voice too. He'd shaken that
- 49:49hand. He trusted that man with his only
- 49:51child. He'd driven home from meeting
- 49:54Daniel Whitmore and told his daughter,
- 49:56"That's a good man. I can tell you're
- 49:58lucky to work for a man like that."
- 50:01"Daniel Whitmore." Megan breathed so
- 50:03quiet only Jackson caught it. "The CEO,
- 50:06the CEO himself is on the phone. He's
- 50:08here. He came in person." Sophie's whole
- 50:10body had gone rigid. Her voice, when it
- 50:13came, was small.
- 50:14"I know it's you, Daniel."
- 50:16"There she is." That warmth again, thick
- 50:19as syrup.
- 50:20"God, Sophie, I've been so worried. You
- 50:22have no idea. This whole thing has
- 50:25gotten so far out of hand and I just I
- 50:28feel responsible, you know?
- 50:30I feel like if I'd handled things
- 50:31differently at the office, none of this
- 50:34"Don't." Sophie's voice cracked. "Don't
- 50:37do the warm thing. Don't you dare do the
- 50:39warm thing right now." A pause on the
- 50:41line, and when Daniel spoke again, the
- 50:43warmth was still there, but underneath
- 50:45it, way underneath, something had
- 50:47shifted. "Sophie, listen to me. I'm
- 50:49going to be honest with you because
- 50:51you're a smart girl.
- 50:52You were always the smartest one in that
- 50:54building and you deserve honesty."
- 50:57A beat. "You're in a room with a bunch
- 50:59of criminals who are going to get you
- 51:01killed. That's the truth. These aren't
- 51:04good men.
- 51:05They've hurt some of my people tonight
- 51:07already. And when this goes bad, and
- 51:10it's going to go bad, honey, it's
- 51:11already going bad, you're going to be in
- 51:14the middle of it. So, I'm giving you a
- 51:16door. Walk out, bring the phone, and I
- 51:19give you my word on my life that you and
- 51:21your father walk away from this.
- 51:24Nobody touches the mechanics inside. It
- 51:26ends right now, all of it. Just you, me,
- 51:29and the phone, and everybody else goes
- 51:30home." And there it was, the real offer.
- 51:34Not from Reese,
- 51:35from the top.
- 51:37Sophie's hand was shaking so hard the
- 51:38phone rattled on the desk.
- 51:40"You said the mechanics." She said
- 51:42slowly.
- 51:44A pause.
- 51:45"What?" "You said nobody touches the
- 51:47mechanics. Not the bikers, the
- 51:50mechanics. Sophie's eyes came up and
- 51:52something hardened in them.
- 51:54You've been listening a while, haven't
- 51:56you, Daniel?
- 51:57Long enough to know my dad fixes cars.
- 52:00Long enough to know I set a timer.
- 52:02You've been in my phone since the
- 52:03beginning and you just slipped because
- 52:06you know too much and now I know exactly
- 52:08how long you've been in my life
- 52:09pretending to help me while you plan to
- 52:12end me.
- 52:13Silence on the line. A long one. Sophie,
- 52:16Daniel said, and every drop of warmth
- 52:18was gone, now drained out like a plug
- 52:20had been pulled leaving something flat
- 52:22and cold and much closer to the truth.
- 52:25You have 38 minutes. I know that because
- 52:28as you told me, you told your phone and
- 52:30your phone told me every keystroke for 3
- 52:33weeks.
- 52:34I know the timer. I know the three
- 52:36drops. I know two of them are still
- 52:38sinking.
- 52:40I know that if I get that phone in the
- 52:42next 38 minutes, none of it fires clean
- 52:44and I will win.
- 52:45And I have 12 men and a torch on the
- 52:47other side of a door I paid to have
- 52:49installed the specs for.
- 52:51A breath.
- 52:52I know that building, Sophie. I know it
- 52:54because I own the company that built it.
- 52:57So please understand your position and
- 52:59walk out. The room had gone absolutely
- 53:02silent.
- 53:03Bear turned very slowly and looked at
- 53:05the steel door he'd been so sure of.
- 53:07He built the door, Bear said hollowly.
- 53:10He knows the door. That's why he's so
- 53:12calm. He's not trying to break it. He's
- 53:15got the specs. Bang, but different this
- 53:17time. Not a body, something with a
- 53:20motor. A high ugly mechanical whine
- 53:22started up on the other side of the
- 53:24steel and everyone in the room
- 53:26recognized the sound of a cutting tool
- 53:28biting into metal. 20 minutes, Ghost
- 53:30said quietly listening to the whine
- 53:32judging it like he judged everything.
- 53:34Maybe less. That's how long that door
- 53:36lasts.
- 53:37Sophie looked at the phone. 38 minutes
- 53:40on the timer, 20 minutes on the door.
- 53:42The numbers didn't work.
- 53:44The math she trusted her whole life, the
- 53:46numbers that never lied for the first
- 53:48time in her life, the numbers were
- 53:50against her, and they were telling her
- 53:52plainly that the door would open before
- 53:53the clock ran out. Sophie? Daniel's
- 53:56voice purred from the phone. The offer
- 53:58expires when that door does, and it's
- 54:01already dying.
- 54:03Listen to it. That's the sound of your
- 54:05last good option going away.
- 54:08Walk out now or watch what these men
- 54:10have to go through because of a choice
- 54:12you made to hide instead of coming home.
- 54:13Sophie stared at the phone. Her father
- 54:16stared at her. Jackson stared at the
- 54:18door. And the cutting tool screamed
- 54:20against the steel, eating through their
- 54:2220 minutes one bright shrieking inch at
- 54:24a time while the timer on the phone
- 54:26counted down a number they were no
- 54:28longer going to reach.
- 54:30And then Sophie Walker went very, very
- 54:31still. Because somewhere under the fear,
- 54:34the part of her brain that couldn't
- 54:35leave a wrong number alone, had just
- 54:37found one. A number [clears throat] in
- 54:39the wrong column.
- 54:40A thing Daniel had said that didn't add
- 54:42up.
- 54:43She picked up the phone. She took it off
- 54:45speaker. She put it to her ear, and she
- 54:48turned her back to the room, and in a
- 54:49voice so low that even Jackson 3 ft away
- 54:52could barely hear it, she said, "Daniel,
- 54:55you said you know two of the three drops
- 54:56are still sinking."
- 54:58A pause. That's right. Then tell me
- 55:01which two,
- 55:02Sophie whispered. And on the other end
- 55:05of the line, for the first time all
- 55:06night, from the man who knew everything,
- 55:08who owned the building, who'd been in
- 55:10her phone for 3 weeks, who had an answer
- 55:12for absolutely everything, there was
- 55:14silence.
- 55:15The silence on the line stretched. 1
- 55:18second.
- 55:192.
- 55:203. And Sophie Walker, listening to the
- 55:22most powerful man in the county failed
- 55:25to answer a simple question, felt
- 55:27something turn over in her chest that
- 55:29she hadn't felt in 3 weeks.
- 55:31Hope. "You don't know which two," she
- 55:33said quietly. "You said two of the three
- 55:35drops are still sinking.
- 55:37That's a very specific, very technical
- 55:39thing to know. If you were really in my
- 55:41phone the way you say, if you'd really
- 55:44watched every keystroke for 3 weeks,
- 55:46you'd have said the names. You'd have
- 55:47said the servers. But you didn't. You
- 55:50[clears throat] said two of the three.
- 55:51You said the number.
- 55:53Her voice was picking up strength with
- 55:54every word. You know that phrase because
- 55:58you heard someone say it tonight in this
- 56:00building
- 56:01out loud. The whine of the cutting tool
- 56:04against the steel door filled the
- 56:05silence Daniel didn't fill.
- 56:07"Which means," Sophie said, "you don't
- 56:09have my phone. You never did. You've got
- 56:12somebody in this building right now
- 56:14feeding you what they hear."
- 56:16Behind her the room went dead still.
- 56:18Bear's head came up. Ghost turned from
- 56:20the window.
- 56:22Jackson's eyes moved slow and terrible
- 56:24around the little office, around the six
- 56:25people crammed into it, and everyone
- 56:27felt his gaze pass over them and
- 56:29understood all at once what it meant.
- 56:32One of them was talking to Daniel
- 56:33Whitmore.
- 56:35"Hang up," Jackson said. His voice had
- 56:37dropped to something almost gentle,
- 56:39which was how you knew it was the most
- 56:40dangerous he'd been all night.
- 56:42"Sophie, hang up the phone." Sophie hung
- 56:45up. The screen went dark except for the
- 56:47timer.
- 56:4936 minutes. For a long moment nobody
- 56:52moved. Six people in a cinder block
- 56:54room. A torch eating through the only
- 56:56door and the sudden sick understanding
- 56:58that the enemy wasn't just outside
- 57:00anymore.
- 57:01"He was too calm," Ghost said low.
- 57:04"The whole time I kept telling myself it
- 57:06was arrogance. It wasn't. He had ears in
- 57:09the room. He knew everything we said
- 57:11because somebody in here was saying it
- 57:13to him. "That's insane," Nathan said.
- 57:16"It's It's the six of us. It's me. It's
- 57:18Sophie. It's four men who took bullets
- 57:20for a girl they met tonight."
- 57:22"Did they?" Ghost said quietly. "Or did
- 57:25some of them just say they would?"
- 57:26Ghost.
- 57:28Bear's voice was a warning. "I'm not
- 57:30accusing you, Bear. I'm accusing math.
- 57:33Ghost flat eyes moved across the room.
- 57:36Whitmore said he knew the door specs,
- 57:38said he owns the company that built this
- 57:39clubhouse.
- 57:40That's real. That checks.
- 57:43But the timer, the sinking, the three
- 57:44drops, nobody outside this office knew
- 57:47those details.
- 57:48Sophie only said them out loud in here,
- 57:50in this room, 20 minutes ago.
- 57:53He let that land. So, one of us carried
- 57:55it out. Sophie was staring at the phone.
- 57:58Her mind was doing what it always did,
- 57:59running the numbers, following the wrong
- 58:01number back up the chain, and her face
- 58:03had gone pale and strange. It's worse
- 58:05than that, she said.
- 58:08Guys, it's just worse. He didn't just
- 58:10know the number of drops. Think about
- 58:12what else he knew.
- 58:14She looked up. He knew my dad's a
- 58:16mechanic. He called him the mechanics.
- 58:18Fine, he could have learned that from my
- 58:20file.
- 58:21But he also knew we were falling back to
- 58:23this room.
- 58:24He timed the torch to start the second
- 58:26we bolted this door.
- 58:28He knew we'd consolidate here.
- 58:30Her voice climbed. Who suggested we fall
- 58:33back to this room?
- 58:35Every head in the office turned. Lucas
- 58:37Reed went white. No, Lucas said. No, no,
- 58:40no, that was my idea. I came up with
- 58:42that. I You came up with it, Sophie said
- 58:45slowly, at the exact moment we needed
- 58:47somebody to come up with it. And it put
- 58:49all of us in one room
- 58:51with one door
- 58:53that Daniel Whitmore had the specs for.
- 58:56Sophie, I swear to God.
- 58:59Lucas's voice cracked. He was 23 and his
- 59:01hands were shaking.
- 59:03I swear on my mother that was a real
- 59:05idea. I was trying to help. Everybody
- 59:07stop. Jackson's voice cut clean through
- 59:09it.
- 59:10Stop, right now.
- 59:12The room stopped. Jackson looked at
- 59:14Lucas for a long, long moment. The kid
- 59:17stared back terrified, and Jackson had
- 59:19known this boy for two years, had
- 59:21watched him show up lost and empty, and
- 59:24slowly become somebody. And every
- 59:26instinct in him said, "Not the kid. It's
- 59:29not the kid." But Jackson had to survive
- 59:3157 years by not trusting his instincts
- 59:34when the math said otherwise. And right
- 59:36now the math was ugly. "Lucas," he said,
- 59:39"empty your pockets on the desk."
- 59:41Raven,
- 59:42do it, son. If it's nothing, it's
- 59:44nothing, and I'll owe you an apology in
- 59:46front of God and everybody.
- 59:48But do it now.
- 59:50Lucas's hands were shaking so bad he
- 59:52could barely work his own pockets.
- 59:54Keys, a wallet, a pack of gum, and a
- 59:57phone.
- 59:59Jackson picked up the phone.
- 1:00:01He looked at the screen.
- 1:00:03It was locked dark ordinary.
- 1:00:05"Unlock it." Lucas unlocked it. And it
- 1:00:08was nothing. Text to a girl, a
- 1:00:10half-finished game, no calls to Daniel
- 1:00:13Whitmore,
- 1:00:14no open line, nothing.
- 1:00:17The relief on Lucas's face was so total
- 1:00:19it was almost worse than the fear had
- 1:00:20been.
- 1:00:21"See? See? I told you. I told you."
- 1:00:24"That doesn't clear him," Ghost said. "A
- 1:00:27second phone, a burner."
- 1:00:29"Anybody could um Ghost, that's enough."
- 1:00:32And now there was steel in Jackson's
- 1:00:33voice. "You want to keep pulling this
- 1:00:36thread, we're going to pull it all the
- 1:00:37way. Because if we're playing this game,
- 1:00:40then let's play it honest." He turned,
- 1:00:43and he looked deliberately at Ghost.
- 1:00:45"You knew there were two men coming up
- 1:00:47the east side before anybody saw them.
- 1:00:50You've called every move those trucks um
- 1:00:52made all night from a dark window faster
- 1:00:55than anybody could reasonably see.
- 1:00:57You told us the door would fail in 20
- 1:00:59minutes the second the torch started,
- 1:01:01like you already knew.
- 1:01:03You're a man with a past, none of us
- 1:01:05ever asked about, who never talks, who
- 1:01:07notices everything."
- 1:01:09Jackson's voice was even.
- 1:01:11"By your own math, Ghost, you're the
- 1:01:12best suspect in this room, including
- 1:01:15yourself." The office went so quiet you
- 1:01:17could hear the torch outside and nothing
- 1:01:19else. Ghost looked at Jackson, and
- 1:01:21something [clears throat] moved behind
- 1:01:22his flat eyes, something old and tired
- 1:01:25and for the first time all night hurt.
- 1:01:27"You really think that?" Ghost said. It
- 1:01:30wasn't a question. "I don't know what I
- 1:01:32think." Jackson said honestly. "That's
- 1:01:34the whole problem. Whitmore got in our
- 1:01:36heads, Ghost. That was the play. He
- 1:01:39didn't need a real speech, he just
- 1:01:40needed us to believe in one. Look at
- 1:01:43us." He gestured around the little room
- 1:01:45at Lucas near tears, at Ghost gone cold
- 1:01:48at Bear white-knuckled, at Nathan
- 1:01:50clutching a wrench, at Sophie with her
- 1:01:51phone.
- 1:01:52"Two minutes ago we were six people
- 1:01:54holding one door. Now we're six people
- 1:01:57who can't turn our backs on each other.
- 1:02:00That's what he bought. That's what one
- 1:02:02phone call bought him. He turned the
- 1:02:04strongest room in the building into six
- 1:02:06strangers and it didn't cost him a
- 1:02:08thing. Nobody said anything because it
- 1:02:10was true and everyone felt it be true.
- 1:02:12So here's what we're going to do."
- 1:02:14Jackson said, "We're going to stop. We
- 1:02:16are not going to hand Daniel Whitmore
- 1:02:18the one thing he actually wants, which
- 1:02:20is us tearing each other apart while his
- 1:02:22torch eats the door.
- 1:02:2434 minutes on that clock. We spend it
- 1:02:27fighting each other, we lose. We spend
- 1:02:29it together, we win."
- 1:02:31He looked at each of them in turn. "I
- 1:02:33don't know who talked. Maybe nobody did.
- 1:02:36Maybe he pieced it together sharper than
- 1:02:38we gave him credit for. But I know this,
- 1:02:41every single person in this room bled a
- 1:02:43wrist bleeding tonight for a girl we met
- 1:02:46at midnight and I am choosing to believe
- 1:02:48that means something.
- 1:02:49Right now, out loud, I'm choosing it
- 1:02:52because the alternative is exactly what
- 1:02:54he wants. There was a silence and then
- 1:02:57Bear, Big Bear, put one massive hand on
- 1:02:59Lucas's shoulder.
- 1:03:00"Kid." He said gruffly, "For what it's
- 1:03:02worth,
- 1:03:03I don't think it was you."
- 1:03:05Lucas's chin trembled.
- 1:03:07"Thanks, Bear."
- 1:03:09"And Ghost."
- 1:03:10Bear turned. "I've stood next to you in
- 1:03:12three bad nights and you never once
- 1:03:14flinched.
- 1:03:15I don't care what Math says. I'd put you
- 1:03:18at my back right now. Ghost didn't
- 1:03:20answer, but some of the cold went out of
- 1:03:22him. He gave Bear one short nod and
- 1:03:24turned back to the window and resumed
- 1:03:26being what he had always been, their
- 1:03:27eyes in the dark. And that should have
- 1:03:29been the end of it. Except Sophie was
- 1:03:32still staring at her phone, and she'd
- 1:03:34gone very, very quiet. And when she
- 1:03:36finally spoke, her voice was strange.
- 1:03:39"It's not any of you," she said.
- 1:03:41Everyone looked at her. "I've been
- 1:03:42running it," Sophie said slowly, "and
- 1:03:44it's not any of you. Because you're
- 1:03:46right, Daniel knew the timer and the
- 1:03:48drops and the fallback plan, but there's
- 1:03:50one thing he knew that none of you could
- 1:03:52have told him.
- 1:03:53One thing that was never said out loud
- 1:03:55in this room.
- 1:03:57Not once could he count.
- 1:03:59She looked up and her face was
- 1:04:00bloodless.
- 1:04:01He knew two of the three drops are still
- 1:04:03sinking. But I never said that out loud,
- 1:04:06not in this building, not to anybody.
- 1:04:08The only place that information exists
- 1:04:10She looked down at the phone in her
- 1:04:12hand. Is on this phone.
- 1:04:14The room held its breath. "He is in my
- 1:04:16phone," Sophie whispered.
- 1:04:18"He was telling the truth about that.
- 1:04:20He's been in it the whole time, just
- 1:04:22like he said. Which means when I told
- 1:04:24him he must have a spy in the room, I
- 1:04:26was wrong.
- 1:04:27I was wrong. There's no traitor.
- 1:04:30There never was. I invented one and I
- 1:04:33made you all turn on each other and I
- 1:04:36Her voice broke.
- 1:04:37Oh God, I did his job for him. I did it
- 1:04:40for him. He didn't even have to try it.
- 1:04:42I heard him slip and I built the exact
- 1:04:45same trap he would have built and I
- 1:04:47aimed it at the people who saved me. For
- 1:04:49a second, nobody moved. And then,
- 1:04:52unbelievably, Lucas started to laugh,
- 1:04:54shaky, exhausted, half-crazy laughter.
- 1:04:56And Bear joined him, and even Ghost's
- 1:04:58mouth twitched. And the whole room came
- 1:05:00down off the ledge it had been standing.
- 1:05:06"So we're good," Bear said. "Nobody's a
- 1:05:08snake. We're back to to 12 guys with a
- 1:05:11torch trying to kill us, cuz honestly,
- 1:05:13that's a step up. "We're good," Jackson
- 1:05:15said, but he was looking at Sophie and
- 1:05:17he wasn't laughing. "But hey, hey, look
- 1:05:20at me."
- 1:05:22He waited until she did.
- 1:05:24"That wasn't you. You understand that
- 1:05:26was him. He's been doing this to you for
- 1:05:283 weeks, making you doubt yourself,
- 1:05:30making you feel crazy, making you turn
- 1:05:33on the people trying to help. The
- 1:05:35police, the lawyer, the reporter.
- 1:05:38Every person who could have stood with
- 1:05:39you, he made you feel alone from.
- 1:05:42That's his whole weapon. It's not money
- 1:05:44and it's not muscle. It's making good
- 1:05:47people distrust each other.
- 1:05:49And you just watched him do it to a room
- 1:05:51full of grown men in 90 seconds." He put
- 1:05:53a hand on her shoulder. "So don't you
- 1:05:55dare take that as proof you're broken.
- 1:05:57Take it as proof of exactly how good he
- 1:05:59is, and then let's beat him anyway."
- 1:06:01Sophie wiped her face and nodded.
- 1:06:04And something in her hardened back into
- 1:06:06place.
- 1:06:07But the phone was still the problem,
- 1:06:09because now they understood it fully.
- 1:06:11"If he's in the phone," Megan said,
- 1:06:13she'd been silent through the whole
- 1:06:14spiral, thinking the lawyer and her
- 1:06:16filing everything, "then he's not just
- 1:06:19listening. He's watching the timer. He
- 1:06:21knows exactly how much time he has
- 1:06:23because he can see the same countdown
- 1:06:25you can see.
- 1:06:26He's not guessing at 34 minutes. He's
- 1:06:28reading it off your screen."
- 1:06:30She looked at Sophie. "Which means every
- 1:06:33plan we make he hears. Every number you
- 1:06:35check he checks.
- 1:06:37We are playing cards against a man who
- 1:06:39can see our hand." The weight of that
- 1:06:41settled over the room. "Then we can't
- 1:06:43plan out loud," Nathan said. "We can't
- 1:06:46plan near the phone," Megan corrected,
- 1:06:48"and we can't turn the phone off because
- 1:06:50turning it off kills the timer. And we
- 1:06:53can't move it out of the room because it
- 1:06:55needs to stay charged and connected to
- 1:06:57fire." She pressed her fingers to her
- 1:06:59temples.
- 1:07:00"He built us a perfect box. The one
- 1:07:03object we absolutely have to protect is
- 1:07:06the one object that's spying on us.
- 1:07:08We can't turn it off, can't leave it,
- 1:07:11can't hide it, can't stop it from
- 1:07:13watching.
- 1:07:1433 minutes with a traitor we're not
- 1:07:16allowed to kill. And that was the moment
- 1:07:18the torch broke through. Not all the
- 1:07:20way, just a corner, a bright orange gash
- 1:07:23appearing at the edge of the steel door
- 1:07:25where the cutting tool had finally
- 1:07:27chewed through a fist-sized hole
- 1:07:28spilling light and sparks into the
- 1:07:30office.
- 1:07:31A gloved hand reached through feeling
- 1:07:33for the bolt. Bear was on it in a
- 1:07:35heartbeat bringing the pipe down on the
- 1:07:36reaching hand and there was a scream on
- 1:07:38the far side and they
- 1:07:40The hand yanked back, but the hole
- 1:07:42stayed glowing and everyone understood
- 1:07:44the door had maybe 10 minutes left, not
- 1:07:4720.
- 1:07:48"10 minutes on the door," Ghost said.
- 1:07:50"33 on the clock. The math's still
- 1:07:52against us."
- 1:07:53"Then we change the math," Sophie said.
- 1:07:56She'd stopped crying.
- 1:07:58She'd stopped spiraling and the look on
- 1:08:00her face now was the look of the girl
- 1:08:02who couldn't leave a wrong number alone.
- 1:08:04Cold, focused, working.
- 1:08:06"Megan's right. He can see the timer. He
- 1:08:08can hear us near the phone. He knows
- 1:08:11we've got 33 minutes and the door's got
- 1:08:1310.
- 1:08:14And he's confident because from where
- 1:08:16he's sitting, he can see everything and
- 1:08:18we can see nothing."
- 1:08:20She stood up. "So let's give him
- 1:08:22something to see."
- 1:08:24"Sophie," Nathan started. "No, Dad,
- 1:08:26listen. This [clears throat] is what I
- 1:08:28do. This is the only thing I know how to
- 1:08:30do."
- 1:08:31She turned to the room phone in hand and
- 1:08:33she pitched her voice at a completely
- 1:08:35normal volume because she wanted the
- 1:08:37phone to hear it. "Okay, new plan. The
- 1:08:40timer's not going to make it.
- 1:08:42The door's going to fall first.
- 1:08:45So we abandon the fail-safe. It's not
- 1:08:48worth dying for.
- 1:08:49When they come through, I hand over the
- 1:08:51phone, I hand over the bag, and we take
- 1:08:53Daniel's deal. Everybody walks. It's
- 1:08:56over. I'm done. I can't watch anybody
- 1:08:58die for this." Nathan stared at her
- 1:09:01horrified.
- 1:09:02Sophie?
- 1:09:03She held up one finger. Wait. And with
- 1:09:05her other hand she was sprawling on a
- 1:09:07scrap of paper on the desk fast. And she
- 1:09:10turned it around so the room could read
- 1:09:11it while her voice kept talking
- 1:09:13surrender into the phone.
- 1:09:15The paper said, "He's listening. It's a
- 1:09:17lie. Play along. Look defeated." And
- 1:09:20Jackson Cole, who had survived 57 years
- 1:09:23by reading rooms faster than anyone
- 1:09:24alive, understood in half a second and
- 1:09:27let his shoulders slump and put defeat
- 1:09:30all over his face and said in a heavy
- 1:09:31beaten voice,
- 1:09:33"Yeah, okay, kid. Maybe you're right.
- 1:09:35Maybe it's over."
- 1:09:37He met her eyes and underneath the
- 1:09:39defeat something sparked.
- 1:09:41"Nobody else dies for this tonight."
- 1:09:43"Thank you." Sophie said to the phone
- 1:09:45letting her voice shake, letting it
- 1:09:46sound like the last of the fight going
- 1:09:48out of her.
- 1:09:50"Thank you. I'll I'll tell him. I'll
- 1:09:52tell Daniel we're coming out." She set
- 1:09:54the phone down on the desk screen up
- 1:09:56timer running.
- 1:09:5731 minutes.
- 1:09:59And she left it there. Glowing,
- 1:10:00listening, watching. And she gathered
- 1:10:02the room with her eyes and walked them
- 1:10:04all to the far corner away from it. And
- 1:10:06there in a whisper too low for any phone
- 1:10:08to catch with a torch screaming against
- 1:10:10the dying door, she told them the truth.
- 1:10:12"He can see the timer." she breathed.
- 1:10:15"And he can hear us. So we just told him
- 1:10:17we quit.
- 1:10:18Which means right now on the other side
- 1:10:20of that door Daniel Whitmore thinks he's
- 1:10:21won. He's going to call off the torch.
- 1:10:24He's going to relax. He's going to wait
- 1:10:27for me to walk out with the phone in my
- 1:10:28hand nice and easy. Because why would he
- 1:10:31keep burning through a door for a girl
- 1:10:33who's already surrendering?"
- 1:10:36Understanding dawned across the room
- 1:10:37like a sunrise.
- 1:10:39"You're buying time." Megan whispered.
- 1:10:41"I'm buying all the time." Sophie
- 1:10:43whispered back.
- 1:10:44"If he calls off the torch, the door
- 1:10:46holds. If the door holds, we don't lose
- 1:10:48in 10 minutes anymore. And the timer
- 1:10:50keeps running.
- 1:10:5131 minutes. And he'll wait because he
- 1:10:54thinks it's over. And by the time he
- 1:10:56realizes I'm not coming out,
- 1:10:58she smiled and it was a terrible,
- 1:11:00wonderful thing to see on a
- 1:11:0119-year-old's face. It'll be too late.
- 1:11:04The clock will have already hit zero.
- 1:11:06It'll already be out. In three cities,
- 1:11:09on the internet, federal, everywhere.
- 1:11:12And there won't be one single thing he
- 1:11:13can do about it because he'll have spent
- 1:11:16his last 20 minutes standing on a lawn
- 1:11:18feeling like he won. For a moment,
- 1:11:20nobody breathed. Then Bear whispered,
- 1:11:22"You want to beat a man who can see
- 1:11:24everything
- 1:11:25by letting him see exactly what he wants
- 1:11:27to see."
- 1:11:28"He built the box," Sophie whispered.
- 1:11:30"I'm just decorating it."
- 1:11:32And outside, as if the universe wanted
- 1:11:34to prove her right, the whine of the
- 1:11:36cutting torch sputtered,
- 1:11:38hesitated, and stopped. The room went
- 1:11:40silent. The orange glow at the corner of
- 1:11:43the door began slowly to fade. Reese's
- 1:11:45voice came through the hole muffled,
- 1:11:47talking to someone, and then louder
- 1:11:49calling into the office in a tone that
- 1:11:51had gone almost gentle.
- 1:11:53"Smart. That's real smart, folks. Sit
- 1:11:55tight, Ms. Walker. You take your time.
- 1:11:58You come out that front door whenever
- 1:11:59you're ready. No rush now. No rush at
- 1:12:02all.
- 1:12:03No rush." Sophie looked at the phone on
- 1:12:05the desk. 30 minutes. And she mouthed
- 1:12:08silently to a room full of people who
- 1:12:10had become her family in the span of one
- 1:12:12impossible night.
- 1:12:14"Now we wait." They waited. It was the
- 1:12:17longest and most excruciating kind of
- 1:12:20waiting there is the kind where you have
- 1:12:21to perform being defeated while hope
- 1:12:23claws at your insides.
- 1:12:25Every few minutes, Sophie would call out
- 1:12:27something toward the phone keeping the
- 1:12:29lie alive. "I'm getting the bag. Give me
- 1:12:31a minute. I'm shaking too bad to stand.
- 1:12:34I just need to say goodbye to my dad."
- 1:12:36And every time Reese's voice would come
- 1:12:38back soothing and patient, and every
- 1:12:40time another minute bled off the clock
- 1:12:42in their favor. 25 minutes.
- 1:12:45Nathan sat next to his daughter in the
- 1:12:46corner, and he took her hand, and he
- 1:12:48pressed his mouth close to her ear.
- 1:12:51"When you were little," he whispered so
- 1:12:53low it was barely sound, "you used to
- 1:12:55count everything. The stairs, the cracks
- 1:12:59in the sidewalk, the peas on your plate,
- 1:13:02drove me half crazy."
- 1:13:03He squeezed her hand.
- 1:13:05>> [clears throat]
- 1:13:05>> "I used to think this kid's going to
- 1:13:06grow up and do something with numbers. I
- 1:13:08just never thought the numbers would be
- 1:13:10the thing that saved your life." Sophie
- 1:13:12leaned her head on her father's shoulder
- 1:13:14in the corner of a cinder block room
- 1:13:16surrounded by men she'd have crossed the
- 1:13:18street to avoid a day ago, and for the
- 1:13:20first time in 3 weeks, she wasn't alone
- 1:13:22with it. 20 minutes. And then because
- 1:13:25Daniel Whitmore had not built a
- 1:13:26billion-dollar fraud machine by being a
- 1:13:28patient man, and because a man who can
- 1:13:30see everything eventually starts to
- 1:13:32wonder why what he's seeing isn't
- 1:13:34moving, the phone on the desk lit up
- 1:13:36again. Incoming call, no name. The room
- 1:13:39froze. Sophie looked at Jackson.
- 1:13:41Jackson looked at the timer. 20 minutes.
- 1:13:44"He's getting impatient," Megan
- 1:13:46whispered.
- 1:13:47"He's wondering why you haven't come
- 1:13:48out. If you don't answer, he'll know
- 1:13:50something's wrong. If you do answer, you
- 1:13:52have to sell it completely because the
- 1:13:55second he stops believing you've quit,
- 1:13:58the torch comes back on." Ghost
- 1:14:01finished. Sophie picked up the phone.
- 1:14:03Her hand was steady now. She put it to
- 1:14:05her ear. "Daniel," she said and she put
- 1:14:08every ounce of exhaustion and defeat she
- 1:14:10could manufacture into that one word.
- 1:14:13"Sophie." And his voice was warm again,
- 1:14:15but there was an edge under it now, a
- 1:14:17thin blade of suspicion.
- 1:14:19"It's been 15 minutes, honey.
- 1:14:22My men tell me you're getting ready.
- 1:14:24What's taking so long? You just have to
- 1:14:26walk out a door." And Sophie Walker, the
- 1:14:28girl who counted stairs, who couldn't
- 1:14:30leave a wrong number alone, who had one
- 1:14:33job in the whole world, and it was to
- 1:14:35keep this man calm for 20 more minutes,
- 1:14:37opened her mouth to lie.
- 1:14:39And that was the exact moment her
- 1:14:41father's old truck, still parked out in
- 1:14:43the lot with his engine long dead, was
- 1:14:45suddenly lit up by a fresh set of
- 1:14:47headlights swinging fast into the gravel
- 1:14:49drive. A vehicle none of them had seen
- 1:14:51coming, not one of Daniel's black SUVs.
- 1:14:54A county sheriff's cruiser, lights off,
- 1:14:57rolling slow,
- 1:14:58pulling right up alongside Daniel
- 1:15:00Whitmore's men. And through the phone
- 1:15:02pressed to her ear in the half second
- 1:15:04before Sophie could say a word, she
- 1:15:06heard Daniel Whitmore's voice change
- 1:15:08heredity, drop the warmth entirely.
- 1:15:10Heard him turn away from the phone to
- 1:15:12speak to someone standing right beside
- 1:15:14him, and heard him say four words that
- 1:15:16stopped her heart cold. Sheriff, you're
- 1:15:18late. Handle it. Sheriff, you're late.
- 1:15:21Handle it. Sophie's hand went numb
- 1:15:24around the phone. For 3 weeks she had
- 1:15:26held on to one last small secret hope
- 1:15:29that somewhere in this whole rotten
- 1:15:31machine there was still one clean part,
- 1:15:34one person with a badge who'd been
- 1:15:36fooled instead of bought, one door she
- 1:15:38could still eventually knock on.
- 1:15:40And in four words, Daniel Whitmore took
- 1:15:42even that away from her.
- 1:15:44Sophie, his voice swung back to warm,
- 1:15:47syrup-thick, sensing her go quiet.
- 1:15:50Sophie, honey, you still there?
- 1:15:53She couldn't speak. Jackson saw her face
- 1:15:55and crossed to her in two steps.
- 1:15:57He didn't grab the phone. He just leaned
- 1:15:59in close and mouthed one word.
- 1:16:02What? Sophie lowered the phone from her
- 1:16:04ear, pressed it against her chest to
- 1:16:05muffle it, and looked up at all of them
- 1:16:08with eyes that had gone glassy and huge.
- 1:16:10The sheriff, she whispered, that cruiser
- 1:16:13that just pulled in, he's not here to
- 1:16:15help us. He's Daniel just called him.
- 1:16:18He said you're late, handle it. Her
- 1:16:20voice cracked.
- 1:16:22The sheriff works for Daniel. The
- 1:16:23sheriff, the last person, the last door,
- 1:16:27he owns that, too.
- 1:16:29The room seemed to sink an inch. Nathan
- 1:16:31made a sound like something breaking.
- 1:16:33That's no No, a sheriff, that's he's an
- 1:16:36elected You think elected can't be
- 1:16:38bought? Ghost said quietly from the
- 1:16:40window, watching the cruiser roll up
- 1:16:43alongside the black SUVs like it
- 1:16:45belonged there because it did.
- 1:16:47Elected is the easiest thing to buy
- 1:16:49there is. You just fund the right
- 1:16:51campaign.
- 1:16:52Whitmore's been buying this whole county
- 1:16:54for years. Why would he stop at the man
- 1:16:56with the gun and the star? Bear turned
- 1:16:59slowly to Jackson and for the first time
- 1:17:01all night, even Bear looked shaken.
- 1:17:03Raven, if the sheriff's dirty, then
- 1:17:05there's no cavalry coming. There's no
- 1:17:07one to call. We call 911, the call
- 1:17:10routes to that man. We're not surrounded
- 1:17:12by 12 thugs anymore.
- 1:17:14We're surrounded by 12 thugs
- 1:17:16and the law.
- 1:17:17We were always alone in here, Jackson
- 1:17:19said. This doesn't change that. It just
- 1:17:22makes it official. But Sophie was still
- 1:17:24holding the phone to her chest and
- 1:17:26Daniel was still talking tinny and
- 1:17:28muffled against her hoodie, and she
- 1:17:30suddenly realized with a jolt that she'd
- 1:17:32let the silence run too long.
- 1:17:34>> [snorts]
- 1:17:34>> That a girl who had truly given up, who
- 1:17:36was truly walking out to surrender,
- 1:17:38would not go quiet on the phone the
- 1:17:40instant a police car arrived. She'd get
- 1:17:42relieved. She snapped the phone back to
- 1:17:45her ear, and she did the hardest piece
- 1:17:47of acting of her entire life. She let
- 1:17:49her voice fill up with a desperate
- 1:17:51sobbing oh hope she did not feel oh
- 1:17:53hope. She just watched die and she said,
- 1:17:56"Daniel, Daniel, is that the police? Is
- 1:17:58that a sheriff out there? Oh my god,
- 1:18:01okay. Okay, I'll come out. I'll come out
- 1:18:03right now if the sheriff's there. I'll
- 1:18:05come out. Just don't let anybody hurt my
- 1:18:07dad. Please, I'll bring the phone. I'll
- 1:18:09bring everything." A pause on the line,
- 1:18:12and then Daniel Whitmore chuckled low
- 1:18:14and warm and satisfied, the sound of a
- 1:18:16man who thinks the last piece has just
- 1:18:18clicked into place.
- 1:18:19"See, honey, I told you that I'd take
- 1:18:21care of you. The sheriff's a good friend
- 1:18:23of mine. He's going to make sure this
- 1:18:25all goes nice and legal, nice and clean.
- 1:18:28You come on out and hand everything to
- 1:18:29him and it's over. It's really over."
- 1:18:32A beat. "Smart girl. You were always the
- 1:18:35smart one. "Two minutes." Sophie
- 1:18:38breathed into the phone.
- 1:18:40"Give me two minutes to get my dad calm
- 1:18:42and I'm walking out that front door. I
- 1:18:44promise. Two minutes."
- 1:18:46"Take your time." Daniel Purd "We've got
- 1:18:49all the time in the world now."
- 1:18:51She hung up and the second the screen
- 1:18:53went dark, she looked at the timer and
- 1:18:55she looked at the room and she said very
- 1:18:57fast and very low, "14 minutes. He
- 1:19:00thinks I'm coming out in two, which
- 1:19:02means for the next two minutes, he is
- 1:19:04completely totally relaxed and after
- 1:19:06that he's going to start counting and if
- 1:19:08I'm not through that door at the
- 1:19:10two-minute mark, everything I just
- 1:19:11bought falls apart."
- 1:19:13"So, what do we do with two minutes?"
- 1:19:15Lucas asked. "We use the sheriff." Megan
- 1:19:17said. Everyone looked at her. Megan
- 1:19:20Carter had gone very still and very
- 1:19:22sharp the way she got when the law
- 1:19:23stopped being a wall in her way and
- 1:19:25became a tool in her hand.
- 1:19:27"Think about it. Daniel just made a
- 1:19:29mistake, a huge one. Up until 60 seconds
- 1:19:32ago, everything happening out there was
- 1:19:34deniable.
- 1:19:35Private security, a welfare check, a
- 1:19:38family emergency.
- 1:19:39Ugly but survivable in a courtroom.
- 1:19:42That's why he sent Reese with a story
- 1:19:44instead of a warrant. But now," she
- 1:19:46pointed at the wall toward the drive,
- 1:19:48"now there's a sworn law enforcement
- 1:19:50officer out there in uniform in a marked
- 1:19:52cruiser taking orders from Daniel
- 1:19:54Whitmore to help forcibly remove a girl
- 1:19:56from a private residence.
- 1:19:58That's not deniable.
- 1:20:00That's not messy. That is a United
- 1:20:02States county sheriff committing a
- 1:20:04federal civil rights felony live on
- 1:20:06Daniel's leash." "Okay." Bear said
- 1:20:08slowly, "But how does that help us if
- 1:20:11the sheriff's on his side?" "Because the
- 1:20:13sheriff being dirty is only good for
- 1:20:15Daniel if nobody can prove it." Megan
- 1:20:17said and she turned to Sophie and her
- 1:20:20eyes were blazing. "Sophie, your
- 1:20:23fail-safe. The three drops. What exactly
- 1:20:26is in them?"
- 1:20:27"Everything." Sophie said. "The fraud,
- 1:20:30the shell companies, the contracts,
- 1:20:32every name, every dollar, all on this
- 1:20:35phone. Whose names are on Sophie
- 1:20:38stopped, and slowly, slowly
- 1:20:40understanding crawled across her face.
- 1:20:42Oh, she whispered. Whose names? Sophie
- 1:20:45Megan pressed. Everyone he paid, Sophie
- 1:20:48said. Her voice had gone faint. That's
- 1:20:51That's the whole file. It's not just the
- 1:20:53fraud, it's the payments. Where the
- 1:20:56stolen money went. Who Daniel bought.
- 1:20:58I've got wire transfers. I've got shell
- 1:21:01payments to a dozen accounts I could
- 1:21:03never trace to real people.
- 1:21:06Get the phone, Megan said, right now.
- 1:21:08And search those accounts for one thing.
- 1:21:10She leaned in. Search for the sheriff's
- 1:21:12name. Sophie's fingers flew across the
- 1:21:15screen.
- 1:21:16The room crowded around her
- 1:21:17torch-scarred door, forgotten Daniel's
- 1:21:19countdown, forgotten everything,
- 1:21:21forgotten except the small glowing
- 1:21:23rectangle and the girl scrolling through
- 1:21:25three weeks of buried evidence. Come on,
- 1:21:28she whispered. Come on, come on.
- 1:21:31She stopped scrolling. Her breath
- 1:21:33caught. Sheriff Raymond Doyle, she read
- 1:21:36off the screen in a voice barely above a
- 1:21:38whisper.
- 1:21:39$41,000
- 1:21:41routed through a shell called Meridian
- 1:21:43Consulting. Three payments. The last one
- 1:21:46was
- 1:21:47She looked up and her face had gone
- 1:21:49bloodless and electric all at once.
- 1:21:51The last one was 11 days ago, right
- 1:21:54after I got fired. Right after I went to
- 1:21:57the police station and a detective
- 1:21:58decided I was hysterical.
- 1:22:01Her hands were shaking, but not from
- 1:22:02fear now.
- 1:22:04That detective reported to Doyle. Daniel
- 1:22:07paid Doyle to make my complaint
- 1:22:08disappear. It's right here. It's been on
- 1:22:11this phone the whole time. The proof
- 1:22:13that the sheriff bought is sitting in my
- 1:22:15pocket. The room was dead silent, and
- 1:22:18then Jackson Cole started to smile slow
- 1:22:20and cold and dangerous, the smile of a
- 1:22:23man who has just watched the board flip.
- 1:22:25Say that again, he said softly. "Say
- 1:22:28what you just realized." "He's coming to
- 1:22:30the door," Sophie breathed.
- 1:22:32"The sheriff. Daniel's sending him to
- 1:22:34the door to take me. And I have on this
- 1:22:37phone proof that Daniel Whitmore paid
- 1:22:39that is that sheriff $41,000 to bury my
- 1:22:42case."
- 1:22:43She looked up at all of them. "He's
- 1:22:45about to walk up to that door and commit
- 1:22:47a crime right on top of the evidence of
- 1:22:50every other crime he's committed. He's
- 1:22:52walking into it," Bear said dawning. "He
- 1:22:54doesn't know you've got him. He thinks
- 1:22:56you're a crazy girl with a stolen
- 1:22:57laptop. He has no idea you're holding
- 1:23:00his own bank records." "14 minutes,"
- 1:23:02Megan said and she was moving now fast
- 1:23:04the whole plan assembling in her head.
- 1:23:06No 12 now. Here's what we do. Sophie,
- 1:23:09that fail-safe, can you add to it? Can
- 1:23:11you make sure that when it fires the
- 1:23:12sheriff's payments go out first? Front
- 1:23:15and center, not buried in 10,000 pages
- 1:23:17right on top where every journalist and
- 1:23:19every fed sees it in the first 10
- 1:23:20seconds." "I Yeah," Sophie said. "Yeah,
- 1:23:24I can flag it. I can pin it to the top
- 1:23:26of all three drops. Do it because here's
- 1:23:29what's about to happen."
- 1:23:31Megan turned to the room and she was a
- 1:23:32lawyer now fully laying out a case to a
- 1:23:34jury of bikers and a broken father.
- 1:23:37"In 12 minutes that fail-safe fires no
- 1:23:39matter what. We can't stop it and we
- 1:23:42don't want to.
- 1:23:43When it fires, it doesn't just take down
- 1:23:44Daniel. It takes down the sheriff, the
- 1:23:47detective, everyone he paid. Which means
- 1:23:49the smartest thing the sheriff can do if
- 1:23:51he had any idea what was coming is to
- 1:23:54not be standing on this porch helping
- 1:23:55kidnap the witness when it goes off."
- 1:23:58Her eyes glittered. "So we tell him."
- 1:24:00"We tell him," Nathan said. "We tell
- 1:24:03him," Megan said. "We open that door not
- 1:24:06to surrender.
- 1:24:08To warn him. We tell Sheriff Raymond
- 1:24:10Doyle that in about 10 minutes federal
- 1:24:12investigators in three cities are going
- 1:24:14to open a file with his name and his
- 1:24:16$41,000 pinned to the very top of it.
- 1:24:20And we let him decide right there on the
- 1:24:21porch whose side he wants to be standing
- 1:24:23on when that happens, Daniel's or ours.
- 1:24:26The silence that followed was the
- 1:24:27silence of a room realizing
- 1:24:30realizing it had just been handed a
- 1:24:32weapon. You want to turn his own bought
- 1:24:34cop against him? Ghost said slowly. Live
- 1:24:38on the porch. I want to give a corrupt
- 1:24:40man a chance to save himself. Megan
- 1:24:43said. Corrupt men are very good at
- 1:24:45saving themselves, Ed down
- 1:24:48It's the one thing you can always count
- 1:24:50on. Daniel bought Doyle's loyalty, but
- 1:24:53Doyle's loyalty was never really to
- 1:24:55Daniel, it was to Doyle. And the second
- 1:24:57Doyle understands that standing with
- 1:24:59Daniel means going down with Daniel. She
- 1:25:01spread her hands. We don't have to beat
- 1:25:0412 men and a sheriff. We just have to
- 1:25:06make one scared guilty man do the math.
- 1:25:09Jackson looked at her for a long moment.
- 1:25:11Then he looked at Sophie. Can you make
- 1:25:13him believe it, that it's real, that
- 1:25:15it's coming? Sophie held up the phone. I
- 1:25:18don't have to make him believe anything.
- 1:25:20I just have to show him the number, his
- 1:25:22name, his 41 grand, his last payment 11
- 1:25:26days ago.
- 1:25:28Her jaw set. He'll know it's real the
- 1:25:31second he sees it because he's the only
- 1:25:33other person on Earth who knows that
- 1:25:34payment happened. You can't fake a
- 1:25:36secret that only two people share. The
- 1:25:39second I say Meridian Consulting, he'll
- 1:25:41know exactly how deep I'm in his life.
- 1:25:4410 minutes, Ghost warned from the
- 1:25:45window, and the sheriff's out of his
- 1:25:47cruiser. He's talking to Reese. He's
- 1:25:49coming toward the building. Then we move
- 1:25:52now, Jackson said. Sophie, pin those
- 1:25:54payments to the top of the drop. Megan,
- 1:25:57you're at the door with me, you talk
- 1:25:58law, I'll talk everything else. Bear,
- 1:26:01ghost out of sight, but ready, because
- 1:26:03if this goes wrong, wrong comes fast.
- 1:26:06Lucas, stay on Nathan. Nathan, I'm not
- 1:26:09hiding, Nathan said. I know you're not,
- 1:26:12Jackson said. I need you at the door,
- 1:26:15because when that sheriff looks through
- 1:26:17it, I don't want him to see a gang. I
- 1:26:19want him to see a father.
- 1:26:21I want him to see the man whose daughter
- 1:26:23he sold out for $41,000.
- 1:26:26Let him look Nathan Walker in the eye
- 1:26:28and then decide what kind of man he
- 1:26:30wants to be.
- 1:26:31Nathan swallowed hard and nodded.
- 1:26:34"Pinned." Sophie said, her fingers
- 1:26:36flying. "It's done. When [clears throat]
- 1:26:38it fires, Doyle's name is the first
- 1:26:39thing anybody sees. All three drops."
- 1:26:42She looked up. "Nine 9 minutes on the
- 1:26:45clock." A heavy fist pounded on the
- 1:26:47front of the building, not the office
- 1:26:49door, now the main entrance out past the
- 1:26:51ruined common room. And a new voice
- 1:26:53called out, deep and official and used
- 1:26:55to being obeyed. "This is Sheriff
- 1:26:57Raymond Doyle of the County Sheriff's
- 1:26:59Department. I have a report of a
- 1:27:01distressed young woman being held
- 1:27:03against her will at this location.
- 1:27:05I need everyone to come out with your
- 1:27:07hands visible.
- 1:27:08Ms. Walker, if you can hear me, you're
- 1:27:10safe now. Come on out. "You're safe
- 1:27:13now." The oldest lie in the county, said
- 1:27:15by a man with a badge and a bank account
- 1:27:17full of Daniel Whitmore's money. Sophie
- 1:27:19stood up. She wiped her face. She looked
- 1:27:21at the phone one last time, 9 minutes,
- 1:27:23and she looked at Jackson.
- 1:27:25"I want to be the one who talks to him."
- 1:27:28she said. Jackson hesitated. "Sophie."
- 1:27:31"No, listen to me." Her voice was steady
- 1:27:34now, steady in a way it hadn't been all
- 1:27:36night. "For 3 weeks that man's detective
- 1:27:39looked at me and decided I was
- 1:27:40hysterical. A crazy girl. Nobody.
- 1:27:44Everybody with a badge in this county
- 1:27:45looked at me and decided I didn't count.
- 1:27:48I've been talked over, talked down to,
- 1:27:50talked around by powerful men for 3
- 1:27:53weeks." She lifted her chin.
- 1:27:56"I want to be the one standing in that
- 1:27:57doorway when the sheriff who buried my
- 1:27:59case finds out I was never crazy. I was
- 1:28:02right. And I've had his bank records in
- 1:28:04my pocket the whole time."
- 1:28:06She looked at her father. "I need to be
- 1:28:08the one, Dad. I need it." Nathan looked
- 1:28:11at his daughter. This girl who'd shown
- 1:28:13up at midnight, shaking in a hoodie who
- 1:28:15was now standing straighter than the men
- 1:28:16around her, and something in his chest
- 1:28:19cracked open with a pride so fierce it
- 1:28:21hurt.
- 1:28:22"Then you be the one," he said. "I'll be
- 1:28:24right behind you, but you be the one in
- 1:28:26front, honey." They walked out of the
- 1:28:27office together, all of them, back
- 1:28:29through the wrecked common room toward
- 1:28:30the front door, where the sheriff's
- 1:28:32silhouette waited on the other side.
- 1:28:34Jackson threw the bolt.
- 1:28:36And Sophie Walker, 19 years old, blonde
- 1:28:39hair pulled back, rough, a dead phone
- 1:28:41glowing in her hand, pulled open the
- 1:28:43door herself and stood in it and faced
- 1:28:45the man who'd sold her. Sheriff Raymond
- 1:28:47Doyle was heavy-set, mid-50s, with a
- 1:28:49comfortable face of a man who'd been in
- 1:28:51charge a long time.
- 1:28:53Behind him stood Reese and a cluster of
- 1:28:55dark-jacketed men, and behind them,
- 1:28:57hanging back near the SUVs, one figure
- 1:28:59in an expensive coat who hadn't come any
- 1:29:01closer, Daniel Whitmore watching,
- 1:29:03letting his sheriff do the work. Doyle's
- 1:29:05eyes swept over Sophie, over the ruined
- 1:29:07door behind her, over the men at her
- 1:29:09back, and his expression settled into
- 1:29:11practiced authority.
- 1:29:13"Miss Walker, I'm Sheriff Doyle. You've
- 1:29:15had these folks real worried. Why don't
- 1:29:17you come with me and we'll get you the
- 1:29:19help you need and we'll"
- 1:29:21"Meridian Consulting," Sophie said. The
- 1:29:23sheriff stopped. It was small. If you
- 1:29:26weren't watching for it, you'd miss it.
- 1:29:28Just a flicker, a hitch in the breath, a
- 1:29:30half second where the practiced
- 1:29:31authority slipped and something
- 1:29:33underneath it looked out through his
- 1:29:35eyes.
- 1:29:36"Excuse me," Doyle said. "Meridian
- 1:29:38Consulting." Sophie said again, quiet
- 1:29:40and clear.
- 1:29:41"$41,000 in three payments. The last one
- 1:29:4511 days ago." She turned the phone
- 1:29:47around and held it up so he could see
- 1:29:48the screen.
- 1:29:50"Right after your detective decided I
- 1:29:51was a hysterical girl and made my
- 1:29:54complaint go away.
- 1:29:56You want to tell me again how worried
- 1:29:58everybody's been about me, Sheriff, or
- 1:30:00do you want to talk about where that
- 1:30:02$41,000 came from? The porch went
- 1:30:04silent.
- 1:30:05Reese's head turned toward Doyle. Even
- 1:30:08the dark-jacketed men shifted. And out
- 1:30:10by the SUVs, Daniel Whitmore took one
- 1:30:12step forward, sensing something going
- 1:30:14wrong, unable to hear the words.
- 1:30:16"I don't know what you think you have,"
- 1:30:18Doyle said, but his voice had changed,
- 1:30:20lower now, careful, the voice of a man
- 1:30:22feeling the ground move. "But you're a
- 1:30:24confused young woman making wild
- 1:30:26accusations, and I'd advise you to "In
- 1:30:29about 8 minutes," Sophie said,
- 1:30:31"a file is going to open on the desks of
- 1:30:33federal investigators in three different
- 1:30:35cities. It's already loaded. It's
- 1:30:37already sent.
- 1:30:38There's nothing anybody can do to stop
- 1:30:40it. Not me, not you, not Daniel. And
- 1:30:43pinned to the very top of that file,
- 1:30:45before the fraud, before the shell
- 1:30:46companies, before any of it, is your
- 1:30:48name, Sheriff Doyle, Raymond Doyle.
- 1:30:51Meridian Consulting, $41,000.
- 1:30:54Because I made sure you'd be the very
- 1:30:56first thing they see." Doyle's face had
- 1:30:58gone gray.
- 1:30:59"You're bluffing," he said, but he
- 1:31:01didn't move to take her. And that was
- 1:31:03everything. "Am I?" Sophie said, "You're
- 1:31:06the only other person alive who knows
- 1:31:07about that last payment. I'm the only
- 1:31:10one who could know it, 11 days later, to
- 1:31:12the dollar.
- 1:31:13So ask yourself, Sheriff, how would a
- 1:31:15confused, hysterical girl know the exact
- 1:31:18name of the shell company Daniel
- 1:31:20Whitmore used to pay you, and the exact
- 1:31:22amount, and the exact date?" She let it
- 1:31:25hang. "There's only one way it's real,
- 1:31:28and it's about to be very, very public."
- 1:31:30Jackson stepped up beside her, calm as
- 1:31:32still water, and spoke for the first
- 1:31:34time. "Here's where you are, Sheriff,"
- 1:31:36he said, almost gently,
- 1:31:37"in about 8 minutes this all comes out,
- 1:31:39no matter what you do. Whitmore's
- 1:31:41finished. That part's already decided.
- 1:31:43It's already sent. There's no phone call
- 1:31:45that stops it now.
- 1:31:47The only question left on this porch is
- 1:31:49a real simple one.
- 1:31:50When the feds pull the tape and the
- 1:31:52records, and they see how tonight went,
- 1:31:55he nodded out toward the man in the
- 1:31:57expensive coat by the SUVs, do they see
- 1:32:00a sheriff who was standing on a porch
- 1:32:02helping a billionaire kidnap the witness
- 1:32:04who was about to expose him, or do they
- 1:32:06see a sheriff who showed up, saw what
- 1:32:08was happening, and did his actual job?
- 1:32:10Because right now, Megan added, stepping
- 1:32:13into the doorway, her voice crisp and
- 1:32:14legal,
- 1:32:15"You can still choose which one of those
- 1:32:17men you are. In 8 minutes, you won't be
- 1:32:19able to. The record will already be
- 1:32:21written. So, this is the last decision
- 1:32:23you get to make as a free man, Sheriff
- 1:32:25Doyle, and you've got about 7 minutes
- 1:32:28and 30 seconds to make it." Nathan
- 1:32:30Walker stepped forward last. He didn't
- 1:32:32say anything clever. He didn't have a
- 1:32:34plan or a legal argument. He just looked
- 1:32:37the sheriff dead in the eye. This man
- 1:32:40who fixed engines and raised a girl
- 1:32:41alone and taught her to do right when
- 1:32:44nobody was watching, and he said,
- 1:32:46"That's my daughter.
- 1:32:47She did everything right.
- 1:32:49Everything. And every single person who
- 1:32:52was supposed to protect her sold her out
- 1:32:53instead."
- 1:32:54His voice shook, but he didn't look
- 1:32:56away. "You've got a chance right now
- 1:32:58that none of the rest of us had tonight.
- 1:33:01You get to not be one of them. Take it.
- 1:33:03For God's sake, man, take it." The
- 1:33:05sheriff stood on the porch. Behind him,
- 1:33:08Daniel Whitmore was walking toward the
- 1:33:10building, now faster, his voice rising,
- 1:33:13calling out, "Ray, Ray, what's the hold
- 1:33:15up? Take the girl on the phone. That's
- 1:33:17what I'm paying. That's what we agreed."
- 1:33:20And that was the mistake. "That's what
- 1:33:22I'm paying" said out loud in front of
- 1:33:24everyone, in front of Reese, in front of
- 1:33:26the men, in front of the sheriff. Doyle
- 1:33:28turned and looked at Daniel Whitmore
- 1:33:30walking toward him. And you could see it
- 1:33:31happen on his face the exact moment a
- 1:33:34bought man does the math and realizes
- 1:33:36the man who bought him just said the
- 1:33:37quiet part out loud in front of
- 1:33:39witnesses,
- 1:33:417 minutes before it all became federal
- 1:33:43evidence. You could see loyalty die and
- 1:33:45self-preservation take its place, which
- 1:33:47was the only loyalty a man like Doyle
- 1:33:49had ever really had. "Don't say another
- 1:33:51word, Daniel," Doyle said. His voice had
- 1:33:53changed completely.
- 1:33:55Daniel stopped walking.
- 1:33:57"What?" "I said don't say another word.
- 1:34:00Doyle's hand had drifted not to his gun,
- 1:34:02but to the radio [clears throat] on his
- 1:34:03shoulder.
- 1:34:04You just said that's what I'm paying in
- 1:34:06front of nine witnesses and I'd put
- 1:34:08money on a recording. You dumb arrogant
- 1:34:12He stopped himself, straightened, and
- 1:34:14when he spoke again it was the voice of
- 1:34:16a man frantically, desperately climbing
- 1:34:18back onto the right side of a line he'd
- 1:34:20crossed a long time ago.
- 1:34:22Ms. Walker, step back inside, please.
- 1:34:25Sir, this to Jackson, keep everyone in
- 1:34:27the building. Nobody comes out. He keyed
- 1:34:30the radio. This is Sheriff Doyle. I need
- 1:34:33every available unit to my location and
- 1:34:35I need them now. And get me the state
- 1:34:37police. We've got His eyes flicked to
- 1:34:41Daniel, to Reese, to the SUVs full of
- 1:34:43men.
- 1:34:44We've got a situation. Ray, Daniel's
- 1:34:47voice had gone very quiet, very cold.
- 1:34:49Ray, what are you doing? Think very hard
- 1:34:51about what you're doing right now.
- 1:34:54I am thinking, Daniel Doyle said. For
- 1:34:56the first time in about 3 years, I'm
- 1:34:58thinking real clear.
- 1:35:005 minutes, Sophie whispered, watching
- 1:35:03the timer. It's still going to fire.
- 1:35:06It's still all coming out.
- 1:35:08I know, Doyle said without turning
- 1:35:10around, and something in his voice was
- 1:35:12almost relieved. Let it. Daniel Whitmore
- 1:35:14stood in the gravel drive in his
- 1:35:16expensive coat surrounded by the men
- 1:35:18he'd paid and the sheriff he'd bought
- 1:35:20and the empire he'd built, and for the
- 1:35:22first time all night, for the first time
- 1:35:24maybe in years, he understood that he
- 1:35:26had lost control.
- 1:35:28That the smart girl he'd hired and
- 1:35:30framed and hunted had been holding the
- 1:35:32whole thing in her pocket the entire
- 1:35:34time. That his own bought sheriff was
- 1:35:36now calling the state police on him.
- 1:35:38That there were 4 minutes left on a
- 1:35:40clock nobody could stop. He looked up at
- 1:35:42the doorway at Sophie standing there
- 1:35:44with the glowing phone and their eyes
- 1:35:46met across the dark drive. You, he said,
- 1:35:49just that. You.
- 1:35:51Me, Sophie said, and Jackson Cole
- 1:35:53stepped forward into the doorway, put
- 1:35:55one hand on Sophie's shoulder, and
- 1:35:57looked down at the most powerful man in
- 1:35:59the county, now the most finished man in
- 1:36:01the county, and said the thing Sophie
- 1:36:03would remember for the rest of her life.
- 1:36:05"You thought you could scare one young
- 1:36:07woman into silence," Jackson said.
- 1:36:10"You spent everything you had making her
- 1:36:12feel like she was alone. The cops, the
- 1:36:14lawyers, the reporters, you turned off
- 1:36:17every light in the hallway just so she'd
- 1:36:18give up in the dark."
- 1:36:20He shook his head slowly. "But you
- 1:36:22forgot one thing, Daniel."
- 1:36:24He looked out at the man, and behind
- 1:36:26him, the timer ticked toward zero, and
- 1:36:28the state police sirens were already
- 1:36:30rising faint and distant on the county
- 1:36:32road. She knocked on the one door in
- 1:36:34this whole county you didn't own.
- 1:36:37She knocked on the one door in this
- 1:36:39whole county you didn't own.
- 1:36:40The words hung in the cold air, and for
- 1:36:43a moment Daniel Whitmore just stood
- 1:36:44there in the gravel, and the timer on
- 1:36:46Sophie's phone counted down its last 3
- 1:36:48minutes, and the state police sirens
- 1:36:50climbed higher and closer on the county
- 1:36:52road. And then Daniel did the thing that
- 1:36:54cornered men always do. He ran the math
- 1:36:56one last time, and decided the number
- 1:36:59still favored him. "Nobody move," he
- 1:37:01said, and his voice had gone flat and
- 1:37:03reasonable, the voice of a man who had
- 1:37:05bought his way out of every room he'd
- 1:37:07ever been trapped in.
- 1:37:08"Ray, you're panicking. Nothing has
- 1:37:10fired. Nothing is public. That's a
- 1:37:1319-year-old holding a phone and telling
- 1:37:15you a ghost story. You call off those
- 1:37:17units, and I make tonight disappear, and
- 1:37:20I make you richer than you ever dreamed,
- 1:37:22and every man on this property goes
- 1:37:24home. That's the real offer.
- 1:37:27That's the only offer that's ever
- 1:37:28mattered." He looked at his men. "Take
- 1:37:31the phone." And Reese moved. "2
- 1:37:33minutes," Sophie breathed. "Bare,"
- 1:37:36Jackson said without turning his head.
- 1:37:39But it was Doyle who stepped in front of
- 1:37:41Reese, Sheriff Raymond, and Doyle,
- 1:37:42$41,000 dirty, planting himself in the
- 1:37:46gravel with his hand on his weapon and
- 1:37:48saying in a voice that shook but did not
- 1:37:50break, "You take one more step toward
- 1:37:52that door, Reese, and I will put you
- 1:37:54down where you stand, and I will have
- 1:37:56done one right thing tonight, and
- 1:37:58that'll be enough for me."
- 1:37:59He didn't look away from Reese, but he
- 1:38:01was talking to all of them now.
- 1:38:03"Daniel, you don't get it. You think
- 1:38:05this is still about the phone. It's not
- 1:38:07about the phone anymore. You said that's
- 1:38:10what I'm paying out loud in front of a
- 1:38:12sheriff and nine witnesses, and I don't
- 1:38:14need her file to end you now.
- 1:38:17I can end you, and the only way I climb
- 1:38:19out of the hole I dug is if I'm the man
- 1:38:21who stopped you, not the man who helped
- 1:38:24you." His jaw tightened. "So, I'm
- 1:38:26choosing late, cowardly, for all the
- 1:38:29wrong reasons, but I'm choosing." "One
- 1:38:32minute," Sophie said. And Daniel
- 1:38:34Whitmore heard it, heard the number,
- 1:38:36heard the sirens, heard his own sheriff
- 1:38:38turn, and something in his face came
- 1:38:40apart. The billionaire calm, the
- 1:38:42mentor's warmth, the syrup, all of it
- 1:38:45peeled away in the space of a breath,
- 1:38:47and what was left underneath was just a
- 1:38:49scared, furious man who had never once
- 1:38:52in his life had to be afraid. "You have
- 1:38:54no idea what you've done," he said, and
- 1:38:57he wasn't talking to Dorrell anymore.
- 1:38:59He was looking at Sophie. "Do you
- 1:39:01understand how many people I employ? How
- 1:39:03many families eat because of me? You
- 1:39:06didn't expose a criminal, you little You
- 1:39:08burned down a company. You put thousands
- 1:39:10of people out of work to feed your your
- 1:39:12self-righteousness."
- 1:39:13"No," Sophie said, and she stepped
- 1:39:16forward out onto the porch, out of the
- 1:39:17safety of the doorway, and for the first
- 1:39:20time all night, she wasn't shaking at
- 1:39:21all. "Don't you do that," she said.
- 1:39:24"Don't you dare put those families on
- 1:39:26me. You stole from them.
- 1:39:29You stole the contracts that were
- 1:39:30supposed to build their schools and fix
- 1:39:32their roads, and you funneled it into
- 1:39:34shell companies to make yourself richer,
- 1:39:37and when one person one found the number
- 1:39:39in the wrong column, you didn't fix it.
- 1:39:42You tried to erase her.
- 1:39:44You broke into my home.
- 1:39:45>> [clears throat]
- 1:39:45>> You hunted me. You called me crazy until
- 1:39:48I almost believed it. You made me feel
- 1:39:51so alone I brought my own father into
- 1:39:53the middle of it because I had nowhere
- 1:39:55else on earth to go."
- 1:39:56Her voice rang across the drive. "So,
- 1:39:58don't you stand there and tell me I
- 1:40:00burned it down.
- 1:40:02You built it out of gasoline, Daniel. I
- 1:40:04just stopped pretending I couldn't smell
- 1:40:06it." "10 seconds," Megan said quietly.
- 1:40:09Daniel's eyes darted to the phone. To
- 1:40:11the sirens close now, red and blue
- 1:40:13starting to wash across the tree line.
- 1:40:15To Doyle's gun. To Reese who had
- 1:40:17stopped, who had done the same math
- 1:40:19everyone else had done and wanted no
- 1:40:21part of what came next.
- 1:40:23"Five," Sophie said. "Four."
- 1:40:25"You can't Daniel took a step back.
- 1:40:28There has to be There's always a
- 1:40:31"Three," "Two."
- 1:40:32"There's always a deal!" he screamed.
- 1:40:34"One," Sophie said. And the phone in her
- 1:40:36hand buzzed one soft, almost gentle, the
- 1:40:39smallest sound in the world. And on the
- 1:40:41screen three green check marks appeared
- 1:40:43in a neat little row. Sent. Sent. Sent.
- 1:40:47"It's out," Sophie said. She didn't
- 1:40:49shout it. She said it quiet, almost to
- 1:40:51herself, the way you say a thing you've
- 1:40:52waited three weeks and a whole lifetime
- 1:40:54to be able to say. "It's out. It's in
- 1:40:57three cities. It's federal. It's on the
- 1:40:59internet. Your name, his name, every
- 1:41:02dollar, every account."
- 1:41:04She looked up at Daniel Whitmore and
- 1:41:06there was no triumph in it, no gloating,
- 1:41:08just an exhausted bone-deep relief.
- 1:41:10"There's no deal, Daniel. There's no
- 1:41:13phone call. There's no amount of money.
- 1:41:16For the first time since you built the
- 1:41:18whole thing, there is not one single
- 1:41:20person left in this county you can pay
- 1:41:22to make it go away.
- 1:41:24It's bigger than you now. It got out of
- 1:41:26the box." Daniel Whitmore stared at the
- 1:41:28three green check marks glowing across
- 1:41:30the dark drive.
- 1:41:32And the most powerful man in the county,
- 1:41:34the man who had remembered her birthday,
- 1:41:36who had asked about her father over
- 1:41:37lunch, who had shaken Nathan Walker's
- 1:41:39hand and been called a good man, sat
- 1:41:42down. Right there, in the gravel, like
- 1:41:45his legs had simply stopped agreeing to
- 1:41:47hold him. Surrounded by the men he'd
- 1:41:49paid, who were already backing away,
- 1:41:51already becoming men who'd just been
- 1:41:53standing nearby, already rehearsing the
- 1:41:56story where they hadn't really known.
- 1:41:58That was the moment it broke. Not with a
- 1:42:00fight, not with a gunshot, with a soft
- 1:42:03buzz and three green check marks and a
- 1:42:05rich man sitting down in the dirt
- 1:42:07because the numbers had finally, finally
- 1:42:09caught up with him. The state police
- 1:42:11came up the drive in a river of light.
- 1:42:14What happened after happened fast, the
- 1:42:16way these things do once the dam goes.
- 1:42:19Doyle met the state troopers at the
- 1:42:21mouth of the drive with his hands
- 1:42:23already off his weapon and his story
- 1:42:25already changing shape.
- 1:42:27I responded to a report, I discovered a
- 1:42:29crime in progress, I detained the
- 1:42:31suspect. It was a lie and it was also
- 1:42:33technically in the last four minutes
- 1:42:35becoming true. And everyone on that
- 1:42:37porch understood they were watching a
- 1:42:39corrupt man frantically renovate himself
- 1:42:42into a hero in real time.
- 1:42:44Megan watched him do it and murmured,
- 1:42:46"He'll cut a deal. He'll give them
- 1:42:48Daniel to save himself. He'll wear a
- 1:42:50wire on his own men by Thursday."
- 1:42:53And Jackson said, "Good. Let the rats
- 1:42:55eat the rats. Long as our people walk."
- 1:42:59And Doyle did give them Daniel. Gave
- 1:43:01them everything in that very night,
- 1:43:03talking so fast the troopers could
- 1:43:05barely write it down because the only
- 1:43:07loyalty a bought man ever really has is
- 1:43:10to his own skin. And Daniel Whitmore had
- 1:43:12just taught Raymond Doyle exactly how
- 1:43:14expendable he'd always been. They took
- 1:43:15Daniel away in the back of a state
- 1:43:17cruiser. He didn't resist. He didn't say
- 1:43:20anything clever.
- 1:43:22He just stared out the window as they
- 1:43:23drove him past the clubhouse, past the
- 1:43:25old pickup truck, past the door he
- 1:43:27didn't own, and for one second his eyes
- 1:43:29found Sophie's through the glass and
- 1:43:31whatever he saw there made him look away
- 1:43:33first. It was Sophie who looked longest.
- 1:43:36Nathan noticed that. His daughter
- 1:43:38watched the cruiser until its tail
- 1:43:39lights disappeared, and she wasn't
- 1:43:41afraid, and she wasn't angry. And when
- 1:43:43she finally turned back to him, her face
- 1:43:45was just quiet.
- 1:43:47Emptied out. Three weeks of terror
- 1:43:49draining out of her all at once, leaving
- 1:43:51her hollow and light and unsteady on her
- 1:43:53feet.
- 1:43:54Nathan caught her before she could fall.
- 1:43:57"I've got you," he said into her hair.
- 1:43:59"I've got you, baby. It's over. You did
- 1:44:01it. It's over." And Sophie Walker, who
- 1:44:04had counted stairs as a little girl who
- 1:44:06couldn't leave a wrong number alone, who
- 1:44:08had walked into the most feared
- 1:44:09clubhouse in the county at midnight and
- 1:44:12walked out having brought down a
- 1:44:14billionaire,
- 1:44:15Sophie Walker finally let herself cry
- 1:44:17the way she'd been refusing to cry all
- 1:44:19night, and she cried it out on her
- 1:44:21father's shoulder while the sun started
- 1:44:23to come up gray over the tree line
- 1:44:24because she had promised herself she
- 1:44:26wouldn't cry until it was over. And now,
- 1:44:29at last, it was over. The investigation
- 1:44:31that followed was the biggest the state
- 1:44:33had seen in a generation. Brighton
- 1:44:35Global Industries came apart at the
- 1:44:37seams. Federal investigators, the real
- 1:44:40ones out of state, the ones Daniel's
- 1:44:42money had never been able to reach,
- 1:44:44walked into that file Sophie had built
- 1:44:46and found a map so clean and so complete
- 1:44:49that one of them was quoted later saying
- 1:44:52it was the most organized whistleblower
- 1:44:54package he'd seen in 20 years. The shell
- 1:44:56companies unraveled. The stolen
- 1:44:59contracts came to light.
- 1:45:00The money was traced, and one by one the
- 1:45:03people who'd helped Daniel hide it, the
- 1:45:05accountants, the lawyers, the executives
- 1:45:07who'd looked the other way, the
- 1:45:08detective who'd decided a scared girl
- 1:45:10was hysterical, were named and charged
- 1:45:12and made to answer for it. Daniel
- 1:45:14Whitmore lost the company.
- 1:45:16Then he lost his freedom. And in the
- 1:45:18end, the thing he tried hardest to
- 1:45:19protect, his name on all those buildings
- 1:45:21downtown, became the thing he could
- 1:45:23least escape because every time anyone
- 1:45:25in the county said, "Brighton or they
- 1:45:28meant the fraud. Now they meant the man
- 1:45:30who hunted a girl and that was a
- 1:45:32sentence no amount of money could ever
- 1:45:34buy back. But for Nathan and Sophie the
- 1:45:37victory was never really about any of
- 1:45:39that. Not the arrest, not the headlines,
- 1:45:42not the reporters who suddenly urgently
- 1:45:44wanted to publish the story now that it
- 1:45:45was safe. It was about finally being
- 1:45:48heard. Sophie went back to journalism
- 1:45:50but not the way she dreamed of before.
- 1:45:53She didn't want the byline anymore not
- 1:45:55for its own sake. She'd spent three
- 1:45:57weeks being the person nobody would
- 1:45:59listen to the person every powerful door
- 1:46:01slam shut on and she'd learned in her
- 1:46:03bones exactly how that felt.
- 1:46:05So she became the person who listened.
- 1:46:08She found the other ones, the ignored
- 1:46:10ones, the whistleblowers, everyone had
- 1:46:12decided were crazy. The people standing
- 1:46:15alone at the end of dark hallways
- 1:46:16watching the lights go out one by one.
- 1:46:19And she stood with them. She was very
- 1:46:21very good at it because she knew the
- 1:46:22terrain. She'd lived there. Nathan went
- 1:46:25back to fixing engines. He would tell
- 1:46:27you nothing had changed but something
- 1:46:29had.
- 1:46:30For years he'd carried a quiet corrosive
- 1:46:32belief that he'd failed as a father,
- 1:46:35that a real father would have had money
- 1:46:36or connections or power, some way to
- 1:46:39protect his little girl that a mechanic
- 1:46:41just didn't have. He'd hated his own
- 1:46:44hands for being only good at engines.
- 1:46:46He'd lain awake nights convinced that
- 1:46:48when it counted he'd have nothing to
- 1:46:49offer her but a wrench. It was Jackson
- 1:46:51who took that from him.
- 1:46:53>> [clears throat]
- 1:46:53>> Months later sitting outside the
- 1:46:54clubhouse while Jackson worked on an old
- 1:46:56bike, Nathan finally said it out loud,
- 1:46:58the thing he'd carried and Jackson
- 1:47:00didn't even look up from the engine.
- 1:47:02"You know what I saw that night?"
- 1:47:04Jackson said. "I saw a man who had
- 1:47:06nothing. No money, no badge, no name
- 1:47:09that opened doors. Every advantage a
- 1:47:12father's supposed to have, you didn't
- 1:47:14have a single one."
- 1:47:15He wiped his hands. "And you saved her
- 1:47:17anyway. You want to know how?" Nathan
- 1:47:20didn't answer. "You knew which door to
- 1:47:22knock on," Jackson said. "That's it.
- 1:47:24That's the whole thing. Any rich man can
- 1:47:26hire protection.
- 1:47:28Takes a real father to be desperate
- 1:47:30enough and humble enough and smart
- 1:47:32enough to knock on the one door in town
- 1:47:33everybody else is too proud or too
- 1:47:36scared to knock on."
- 1:47:38"You didn't fail her, Nathan. You did
- 1:47:39the one thing money can't do. You asked
- 1:47:42for help." He looked up finally. "A
- 1:47:45father doesn't have to fight every
- 1:47:46battle by himself. Sometimes protecting
- 1:47:49somebody just means knowing which door
- 1:47:51to knock on.
- 1:47:52And you knew." Nathan Walker cried for
- 1:47:54the second time in his adult life, right
- 1:47:56there in a parking lot, and this time he
- 1:47:59wasn't ashamed of it. Before they left
- 1:48:01that night, the real night, the first
- 1:48:03night, as the sun came up and the
- 1:48:04troopers finished their reports,
- 1:48:07Nathan had stood in the doorway of the
- 1:48:08clubhouse and looked at the men who'd
- 1:48:10taken his daughter in. "I came here," he
- 1:48:13said, and his voice was rough,
- 1:48:15"thinking I needed strangers to save my
- 1:48:17daughter. I knocked on this door
- 1:48:19figuring I was asking a favor from
- 1:48:20people who owed me nothing and had no
- 1:48:22reason to give a damn."
- 1:48:24Jackson had smiled. "But you didn't find
- 1:48:27strangers."
- 1:48:28"No," Nathan said.
- 1:48:30"I didn't."
- 1:48:31"You found brothers," Jackson said, and
- 1:48:33it was true. It stayed true. Months
- 1:48:36later Sophie came back to the clubhouse
- 1:48:38on her own, not afraid, not running, not
- 1:48:40needing anything. She came back because
- 1:48:43she'd finally understood something that
- 1:48:45the whole terrible night had been trying
- 1:48:47to teach her, and it had taken her a
- 1:48:49while to have the words for it. She'd
- 1:48:50grown up believing family was the thing
- 1:48:53you were born into,
- 1:48:54blood.
- 1:48:55Her mother gone too soon.
- 1:48:57Her father doing his best alone. A
- 1:49:00small, careful circle you couldn't add
- 1:49:02to. But that wasn't true. She knew that
- 1:49:04now. Family was the people who stood
- 1:49:06beside you when everyone else walked
- 1:49:08away.
- 1:49:09Family was Bear who'd grumbled that she
- 1:49:10was trouble and then put his own body
- 1:49:13between her and the door.
- 1:49:15It was Ghost who never said 10 words in
- 1:49:17a row and had watched the dark all night
- 1:49:19so she wouldn't have to.
- 1:49:21It was Lucas, 23 years old, who'd been
- 1:49:23suspected and cleared and had stayed
- 1:49:25anyway, who'd kept her almost laughing
- 1:49:27in the worst hour of her life. It was
- 1:49:29Megan who'd promised her she was done
- 1:49:31being alone and had meant it. It was
- 1:49:33Jackson who'd looked at a girl the whole
- 1:49:35world had decided was nobody and said,
- 1:49:38"You're ours now." before he even knew
- 1:49:40if it would cost him everything. The
- 1:49:41same men society crossed the street to
- 1:49:43avoid. The same men people judged on
- 1:49:46sight on the leather and the bikes and
- 1:49:47the reputation without ever once
- 1:49:49wondering what kind of hearts were
- 1:49:51underneath.
- 1:49:52Those men had opened their door at
- 1:49:53midnight for a stranger's daughter and
- 1:49:56asked for nothing and become the heroes
- 1:49:58nobody in that town would ever have
- 1:50:00thought to look for. One evening near
- 1:50:01the end of that first year, Nathan sat
- 1:50:04outside the clubhouse and watched
- 1:50:06Jackson repair a motorcycle in the
- 1:50:07fading light and he thought about the
- 1:50:09cold parking lot and the shaking hands
- 1:50:12in the impossible choice he'd made at
- 1:50:1412:17 in the morning. He thought about
- 1:50:17how close he'd come to not knocking.
- 1:50:20How [clears throat] many men would have
- 1:50:21driven away too proud or too scared and
- 1:50:23lost everything?
- 1:50:25And he understood finally the thing the
- 1:50:27whole night had been trying to tell him.
- 1:50:29The biggest miracles don't come from
- 1:50:31powerful people. They don't come from
- 1:50:33money or badges or names on buildings.
- 1:50:35They come from a father who refuses to
- 1:50:37give up on his child. They come from a
- 1:50:39daughter brave enough to tell the truth
- 1:50:41when telling the truth costs everything.
- 1:50:44And sometimes sometimes they come from a
- 1:50:46handful of men the world had already
- 1:50:48written off who chose to open their door
- 1:50:50at midnight to a stranger and stand
- 1:50:52between that stranger and the dark and
- 1:50:54ask for nothing in return. Because
- 1:50:56heroes don't always wear suits.
- 1:50:58Sometimes they wear leather jackets.
- 1:51:00Sometimes they ride motorcycles.
- 1:51:02Sometimes they've got grease under their
- 1:51:04fingernails and a wrench in their hand
- 1:51:06and a daughter they'd knock on any door
- 1:51:08in the world to save. And sometimes the
- 1:51:11bravest thing a desperate man will ever
- 1:51:13do is not fight the whole world alone,
- 1:51:15but walk across a cold parking
- 1:51:18lot past every door that's already shut
- 1:51:20and knock on the one that finally at
- 1:51:22long last opens. Nathan Walker knocked
- 1:51:24on that door and it changed everything.
