- 0:07a tailor professionally I've been doing
- 0:10it for about eight years
- 0:12on my own I've been sewing since I was
- 0:14eight so
- 0:15[Music]
- 0:18do all sorts of things I alter clothing
- 0:20mostly I do wedding dresses Formals
- 0:23men's clothing a lot of hemming of pants
- 0:26that's the biggest one
- 0:28honestly it comes easy to me I enjoy the
- 0:31creativity of it I do a lot of Cosplay
- 0:35for my kids so this just kind of plays
- 0:38into all of that
- 0:39so it's we'll say a creative Outlet I
- 0:43get here about 8 30 and leave usually
- 0:45around two
- 0:46so some days I have you know
- 0:48appointments where people can't come in
- 0:49so I change my schedule up a little bit
- 0:52and so I'm here longer
- 0:54but for the most part I have 8 30 to 2.
- 0:59but it all depends on where you work
- 1:02and some people are a little more strict
- 1:06[Music]
- 1:07ly a lot of pick
- 1:09ers it takes longer to pick things apart
- 1:12to re make them than it does to put them
- 1:14back together
- 1:16so
- 1:17a lot of picking apart I do a few
- 1:19fittings
- 1:21every few days I have a couple fittings
- 1:23come in
- 1:24but a lot of it's just sitting at the
- 1:26machine and sewing so this job I'm
- 1:29technically part-time here so I only
- 1:32work three days a week for five to six
- 1:36hours a week because it works with my
- 1:38kids school schedules
- 1:40so that's
- 1:41basically why I'm here because it's a
- 1:43job I can do and still be a mom
- 1:46but I know a lot of people who do this
- 1:49full-time and work in like bridal shops
- 1:51which is where a lot of the money is to
- 1:54be honest
- 1:55so if you can learn Bridal it's a lot
- 1:59more income than just your average
- 2:01everyday stuff
- 2:03so for me it's a little different
- 2:05because I have been sewing
- 2:07since I was eight I used to compete in
- 2:09like 4-H
- 2:10and do those kind of sewing competitions
- 2:13so I I learned a lot along the way I
- 2:15learned a lot from my mom I know a lot
- 2:18of people I mean you can go to school
- 2:20there's some like fashion design that
- 2:23kind of thing
- 2:24where you can take classes at local
- 2:26shops
- 2:29a lot of mine was learned from I started
- 2:31with quilting
- 2:33so that's always a good place you learn
- 2:35a lot of your basics of sewing that way
- 2:39get the job here
- 2:41not just experience really
- 2:43[Music]
- 2:45um
- 2:45coming in and having that experience and
- 2:47being able to do
- 2:49what I do essentially
- 2:52a whole lot to it to be honest
- 2:55it's just having that knowledge and
- 2:57being available
- 2:58[Music]
- 3:00I would say
- 3:03um
- 3:04find your locals
- 3:06like fabric shops or anything like that
- 3:09a lot of them do classes and lessons
- 3:12so you can start there and just learn
- 3:13your basics of sewing even your quilt
- 3:15shops teach you how to use a sewing
- 3:17machine and then
- 3:19find somebody who knows how to sew and
- 3:21learn from them because experience is
- 3:23really
- 3:24what a lot of it is I mean you can learn
- 3:27your techniques but your experience is
- 3:30really what you need
- 3:33um start with sewing your own stuff like
- 3:35go get a pattern from Joann's and sew
- 3:38your own clothing or
- 3:40you know get into costumes or quilting
- 3:43or cosplay any of that stuff that gives
- 3:45you that good experience and learning
- 3:47how
- 3:48things are made and put together because
- 3:50that's a lot of it
- 3:52the thing you love and you're passionate
- 3:54about makes working more fun
- 3:58the big thing is just finding that
- 4:00passion I'm Chelsea Hilton and I am a
- 4:03tailor
