- 0:04Hi, Andrea here. And what I'd like to do
- 0:07now is talk you through your first
- 0:11assignment, which is in the Google
- 0:14Classroom. Um, by the time you're
- 0:16watching this, you will have arrived
- 0:17here. And it is assignment one, Guided
- 0:20Observation Journal.
- 0:23So, this video, uh, forms part of your
- 0:26brief, so that you know what you need to
- 0:28do for your assignments.
- 0:30I'm going to talk you through all the
- 0:31different documents that are available
- 0:33to you, and what you can find in order
- 0:36to prepare for your assignments, and
- 0:37then actually completing the assignment
- 0:40itself.
- 0:41So, here we are in this section. You're
- 0:43watching the video. And what you'll see
- 0:46is a list of, uh, documents that I'm
- 0:50going to be talking about, um, in this
- 0:52particular video. And, um, I'll come
- 0:55back to those in a moment. You can see
- 0:57them here, um, as attachments. And then
- 1:00also, there are some other videos here,
- 1:02and there's the assignment itself.
- 1:05So, I'm going to go through the brief
- 1:08with you. Um, as you can see, you will
- 1:10have this as an attachment also, uh, in
- 1:13your Google Classroom, so you can come
- 1:14back, uh,
- 1:16anytime, and just read through the PDF
- 1:18if you want to. Or, of course, you can
- 1:20watch the video again. Um, but let's go
- 1:22through this now.
- 1:25So, this particular assignment is called
- 1:27the Guided Observation Journal. We
- 1:29sometimes refer to it as [clears throat]
- 1:31the GOB, or Gob.
- 1:33>> [gasps]
- 1:33>> And the purpose of this assignment is to
- 1:36help you embed all the terminology and
- 1:39practices that we're introducing. So,
- 1:40things that you've already come across
- 1:42now, uh, when you arrive to this point
- 1:44in the, uh, online study.
- 1:47You're going to explain, uh, a bit about
- 1:49what you've seen in some recorded videos
- 1:52that, uh, I'll explain to you in a
- 1:53moment. Um, and you're going to give
- 1:55your opinions about the techniques that
- 1:57are used in those model classes.
- 2:01We're going to use the assignments to
- 2:03check your understanding of knowledge of
- 2:05the teaching skills that we've been
- 2:06talking about. So, seeing if you can
- 2:08actually recognize those skills being
- 2:10used um when you're watching the
- 2:12recorded classes and getting you to
- 2:14reflect on how you will actually use
- 2:17those techniques yourself um in your own
- 2:19classes when you're with us in your
- 2:21teaching practices, but also when you
- 2:23are uh teaching in general after your
- 2:26qualification.
- 2:30So, in order to complete the
- 2:32assignments, you'll need to do some
- 2:33preparation first. And to do that, you
- 2:36will observe at a minimum an A2, B1, and
- 2:40B2 recorded model class of our teaching
- 2:45Madrid teacher trainers that include
- 2:46myself um during this first phase of
- 2:49your online course.
- 2:51Now, when we talk about the levels, A2,
- 2:53B1, and B2, um we're talking about a low
- 2:56level, um a pre-intermediate level, and
- 2:59a kind of an upper-intermediate level,
- 3:00okay? A2 being low, B2 being higher.
- 3:04There are actually a total of four model
- 3:06classes available for you to review um
- 3:08in the Google Classroom. Includes all
- 3:11levels of A2, B1, B2, and C1, which is
- 3:14an advanced level.
- 3:16And those recorded classes you'll see
- 3:18are mix of face-to-face classes, online
- 3:21classes, general English as in the
- 3:24teachers teaching general English uh
- 3:26topics or vocabulary, and business
- 3:28English as well. So, you're going to get
- 3:30a nice mix of different types of classes
- 3:32there.
- 3:33But in order to receive a pass grade for
- 3:36your assignments, you must complete
- 3:38observations of at least the three
- 3:40recorded classes of A2, B1, and B2.
- 3:43If you can and if you have time, please
- 3:46do watch the C1, um
- 3:48but it's not mandatory for the
- 3:50assignments.
- 3:51Um and then you'll need to complete the
- 3:53assignment according to the content
- 3:54guide, which I'll go through with you in
- 3:56a moment.
- 4:00Okay, so whilst you are watching the the
- 4:03classes, so the recorded online classes
- 4:05and the videos in the Google Classroom,
- 4:08you should use the note-taking sheet
- 4:11that we provide,
- 4:12um, which can be found in the section as
- 4:14well. Now, basically, this note-taking
- 4:17sheet is there to help you capture the
- 4:19correct information ready for your
- 4:21assignments.
- 4:23Now, please note that we will not
- 4:25require you to send us your note-taking
- 4:28sheet. Uh, it literally is that about
- 4:31taking notes for yourself.
- 4:34Once you have your notes and you've
- 4:35watched all the model classes, you will
- 4:37use those notes then to complete the
- 4:39templates, and you'll be required to
- 4:42write up then a comprehensive journal,
- 4:45um, using those notes.
- 4:48You will use the templates provided for
- 4:50the assignments and the content guide,
- 4:52as I mentioned earlier, to ensure that
- 4:54you complete the assignment correctly
- 4:56and therefore achieve a pass grade. All
- 4:59of this information can be found in this
- 5:01section in Google Classroom as well.
- 5:04And we have given you in this case a
- 5:06model example of uh a previous student's
- 5:09assignments, uh, particularly talking
- 5:12about model classes, just to give you an
- 5:14idea of what we are looking for in each
- 5:16section of the assignment itself. Now,
- 5:20obviously, the model example,
- 5:22um, is not something that you can copy,
- 5:25and and actually is referring to
- 5:26different model classes, but it's there
- 5:29to give you an idea of the type of
- 5:30information we are looking for.
- 5:35So, this assignment is due to be
- 5:37submitted,
- 5:38um, once you get to the end of your
- 5:40foundation skills section, when all the
- 5:42videos and tasks have been completed and
- 5:44graded. So, by the time you're looking
- 5:46at this, you should have already
- 5:48completed uh, the the foundation skills
- 5:51sections, okay, in the four skills to
- 5:53teaching English as a foreign language.
- 5:56Once you've done that, and you've
- 5:57arrived at this point, you can start to
- 6:01complete the assignment.
- 6:03So, the templates and the content guide
- 6:05are available here in Google Classroom.
- 6:08When you send us your assignments, you
- 6:10will notice that there are different
- 6:11sections, different parts. Each part
- 6:13section will be graded,
- 6:15but you'll need to pass each section to
- 6:17receive an overall pass for the
- 6:19assignment. Now, in the unlikely event
- 6:22that something is missed, or you don't
- 6:26pass a particular section, we will let
- 6:29you know in the comments, and we will
- 6:31require you to resubmit that. And you
- 6:34can resubmit that until you receive a
- 6:36pass grade. So, we will communicate that
- 6:38to you
- 6:40on a regular basis, so that you can
- 6:42go back and redo any sections,
- 6:46and then receive a pass grade.
- 6:49So, as I said, you will be able to come
- 6:51back and look at this brief at any time
- 6:54in the Google Classroom.
- 6:57So, in terms of the other documents, if
- 7:00I go to view material,
- 7:04you can see here
- 7:06that you have these other documents
- 7:08available to you.
- 7:10So, first of all, let's take a look at
- 7:13the note-taking sheet.
- 7:18So, this note-taking sheet, as I said
- 7:20before, is
- 7:22there just for your notes. We will not
- 7:24require you to submit this as part of
- 7:26your task, but please do complete them.
- 7:29As you are watching three or four
- 7:31videos, you will want to make three or
- 7:34four copies of this note-taking sheet.
- 7:37Now, when it appears in Google Classroom
- 7:39like this, it is a shared document. That
- 7:41means you cannot edit it. So, you will
- 7:44need to download your own copy by going
- 7:47to file
- 7:49and download.
- 7:51Okay? Or you can make a copy even and it
- 7:53will save to your own computer. Once
- 7:56it's on your own computer, then you're
- 7:58free to make notes.
- 8:00And that's as simple as that. You have
- 8:01some questions here that will guide you
- 8:04to what to look for in the videos and
- 8:08that will those points will help you uh
- 8:10complete the assignment as well when it
- 8:13comes. So, for example, the first box
- 8:16says describe in your own words what
- 8:17happened during the class, how it
- 8:19differed from the plan, and if so, why
- 8:22did it differ and how did the students
- 8:24interact with each other? Write some
- 8:26examples to back up your analysis. The
- 8:28second question is, what type of
- 8:30activities happened in each of the PPP
- 8:33stages?
- 8:34So, simply we're asking you to analyze
- 8:36the recorded model classes, make some
- 8:39notes, and then you can use those for
- 8:41your uh assignment.
- 8:44So, if I go back to the classroom here,
- 8:47I'm just looking at the tab at the top,
- 8:49um here is the grading criteria and
- 8:52content for the assignment.
- 8:55So, basically, when you open the
- 8:57assignment, you'll see that there are
- 8:58different sections. They're called PPP
- 9:00methodology, elicitation, correction,
- 9:02modeling, etc. Okay? All of these are
- 9:06the techniques that we've been talking
- 9:08to you about so far with regards to
- 9:11teaching.
- 9:13So, in the sections, it tells you what
- 9:15we expect you to tell us in your
- 9:18assignment. So, for the PPP methodology,
- 9:21it is an overview of the class, what
- 9:23happened, and the language taught, and
- 9:25how each student participated, etc. Then
- 9:28we're going to ask you for some examples
- 9:30of elicitation. Describe what was
- 9:32elicited. Was it vocabulary? Was it
- 9:34grammar? Describe in detail the method
- 9:37which was used to elicit information
- 9:40etc.
- 9:42Then if we go to correction, then it
- 9:44says describe the mistake and describe
- 9:46how the teacher corrected the mistake.
- 9:48So this is the content guide. This is
- 9:50telling you exactly what we expect you
- 9:52to tell us in each of the sections in
- 9:55the assignments.
- 9:57And as you can see,
- 9:58these titles here reflect really the
- 10:02questions that you have been given in
- 10:04the note-taking sheet as well.
- 10:10Then we have a model example,
- 10:13which actually I will come back to in a
- 10:15moment. So I just want to return now
- 10:17to the assignment
- 10:20section and I want to go down to the
- 10:26next sections, which you can see here
- 10:28are videos.
- 10:30So you have the video A2, B1, B2, and
- 10:34C1. Remember at a minimum you have to
- 10:36watch A2, B1, B2.
- 10:38Uh please do watch C1 if you can.
- 10:41So when you click on a video,
- 10:43it will take you to the information that
- 10:46says here, you'll find a copy of the
- 10:48teacher's lesson plan and materials used
- 10:50during the class in the attached
- 10:52document. You should review these before
- 10:54or during the video. This will help you
- 10:56follow what is happening in the class.
- 10:59And also reminder here to take notes
- 11:01during the note section. Now you have
- 11:04here the lesson plan. So if we just
- 11:06click on the lesson plan,
- 11:08and you can see here that Carlos is
- 11:10going to teach a 55-minute class to an
- 11:12A2 group of students. Um you'll start to
- 11:16recognize some of the materials now for
- 11:19the lesson plans,
- 11:21and you'll see here that we've got the
- 11:23objective of the class. So Carlos is
- 11:26teaching
- 11:27um about describing homes.
- 11:30And then he's anticipating
- 11:33um
- 11:33what's going to happen in the class
- 11:35in terms of any possible difficulties.
- 11:38Perhaps the students are going to
- 11:39struggle with the verbs
- 11:41um and they prepare solutions to correct
- 11:43that.
- 11:44And then after that, you're going to see
- 11:46a dedicated lesson plan of exactly
- 11:50what's going to happen in the class.
- 11:52Now, this is something that you
- 11:54yourselves are going to be producing at
- 11:56some point, so take notes uh and see how
- 11:58well they are um
- 12:01uh designed and what goes in them, cuz
- 12:02you're definitely going to be doing
- 12:04these yourselves.
- 12:05So, you can see here that here's the
- 12:06plan uh which will you can follow
- 12:09when you are watching the video. Feel
- 12:12free to download those. Um no problem at
- 12:15all.
- 12:19And then you have the video itself.
- 12:23And this will come up and you just play
- 12:25the model class and watch that as you
- 12:28go.
- 12:29Okay? So, we'll play it now and um but
- 12:32you'll see that. Play the class, watch
- 12:34the look at the lesson plan and take
- 12:37notes.
- 12:39And so you see you've got all the videos
- 12:41here.
- 12:42Now, when it comes to actually doing the
- 12:44assignment itself, um the template that
- 12:48you will need to complete is here in
- 12:50this assignment section.
- 12:54Once you arrive to this section, you
- 12:57need to press view assignments
- 13:00so that the document becomes available
- 13:02to you here in this section where it
- 13:05says your work. As you can see here, I'm
- 13:08looking at this perspective as a student
- 13:11and this document is already available
- 13:13to me.
- 13:14So, here it gives us some instructions
- 13:16about uh completing the assignment once
- 13:18we've watched the video.
- 13:20And um basically, the classroom is
- 13:23designed here now so that when you click
- 13:25on this document, it automatically opens
- 13:29an editable version
- 13:31in your own drive.
- 13:34Okay, in this case, you do not need to
- 13:35download anything or make a copy or make
- 13:39a PDF or anything. It's just a
- 13:41downloadable here.
- 13:42Uh sorry, it's just
- 13:44opens up directly into your own Google
- 13:46Drive where you can edit the document.
- 13:51Okay, you see the questions here are
- 13:53similar to the content guide that we've
- 13:55looked at and the note-taking grid where
- 13:57it says here for the PPP methodology.
- 14:01Uh to answer the question, it says
- 14:02selecting either model class A2, B1, or
- 14:06B2, describe in your own words what
- 14:07happened during the class
- 14:09in each stage of the PPP. Now, here it
- 14:12also asks you to complete it in a
- 14:14minimum of 300 words, so do watch out
- 14:16for that. If we require a minimum of
- 14:18number of words, we will pop that in
- 14:20there.
- 14:21So, this is where you use your notes and
- 14:23you type up something accordingly. Now,
- 14:26please note, it's very important to
- 14:27recognize that here it wants you to
- 14:30choose one of those classes. So, we do
- 14:32not need you to describe all three. Just
- 14:35select one that you particularly liked
- 14:37and that you maybe made more notes on
- 14:39that you feel confident talking about.
- 14:42Then, as we go down the template, you'll
- 14:44see
- 14:45elicitation was the next question
- 14:48in the content guide and also in the
- 14:50note-taking grid. And again, please
- 14:52note, it says give one example from one
- 14:55of these three classes. Now, at this
- 14:58point, you can change class. So, if in
- 15:00the first example, you talked about the
- 15:02B1 class, in this example, you can talk
- 15:05about the A2 class. This is absolutely
- 15:07fine, okay? You are taking your best
- 15:09examples as you fill in the assignments,
- 15:13just using one of them at any time.
- 15:15And again, it says here give one example
- 15:17from either model class A2, B1, or B2.
- 15:19So, you can change these,
- 15:22change the classes that you that you
- 15:23want to talk about as you go through the
- 15:25examples. Okay?
- 15:27Once you've gone through all of the
- 15:29examples in the template, we will ask
- 15:31you for your reflections on all the
- 15:32model classes you have observed.
- 15:35At the very least, the A2, B1, and B2,
- 15:37but there is space here to talk about
- 15:39the C1 if you watched it. And we're just
- 15:41asking you to really
- 15:43kind of put your observations as a whole
- 15:45about the class and what techniques you
- 15:47would like to incorporate that you've
- 15:49seen other people doing. And again, in
- 15:52this case, there is a minimum of 300
- 15:54words for the whole activity.
- 15:57So, the template is very
- 15:59self-explanatory. And once you have
- 16:01completed it, as you will know from
- 16:04Google Docs, it is
- 16:06an automatic save. There is no need to
- 16:09save anything. It just automatically
- 16:10saves into the cloud. So, you go back to
- 16:13the classroom, just at the top here, and
- 16:15when you are ready, you just click hand
- 16:18in. It is as simple as that. You do not
- 16:21need to upload anything or download
- 16:23anything or change anything. You just
- 16:25complete your own document
- 16:28and then press hand in, and it will
- 16:30automatically send us that document with
- 16:34your information in it. And then we will
- 16:38grade it and send you your grade and
- 16:40your any comments.
- 16:43As I said before, if you do not
- 16:46correctly complete everything or
- 16:48something is missing, we'll just ask you
- 16:50to resubmit it. If you come to resubmit
- 16:53it and we return it to you, you will see
- 16:55here that it says unsubmit.
- 16:58So, that means you can unsubmit it, go
- 17:01back, do your editing in your document,
- 17:03and then when you go back, you'll see
- 17:05that it says resubmit. So, it's very,
- 17:08very clear.
- 17:09And if you have any comments or you'd
- 17:11like to let us know,
- 17:13you can comment here um, send that to
- 17:17us, and we will see it when we open your
- 17:20um, assignment to grade.
- 17:23Now, uh, assignments are pass or fail,
- 17:27okay? Um, it's as simple as that. Our
- 17:30grading system is, as you can see over
- 17:32here, one. So, one is a pass, uh, zero
- 17:35is a fail, okay? But, um,
- 17:39you'll see those there. If we ask you to
- 17:41resubmit something, we will leave this
- 17:42blank until you pass it and then it'll
- 17:44be from a number one.
- 17:47If you would like to, um, review some
- 17:50information about what a pass looks like
- 17:54exactly, then obviously follow the
- 17:56content guide. Content guide tells you
- 17:59that that's what you must complete, but
- 18:01you also have available here a rubric.
- 18:04Um, and if you click on the rubric, it
- 18:06will show you here the criteria for
- 18:08passing and what the criteria for
- 18:11fail would be. So, one point's a pass,
- 18:13it means that you give an A, you move
- 18:15the class, you describe all the stages
- 18:17of the class in the first section, and
- 18:20then as you go through for elicitation,
- 18:22you provide examples of elicitation.
- 18:25It all matches up with the assignment
- 18:27itself. So, if you do that and you
- 18:29describe things well and you've
- 18:30understood correctly, you'll pass. And
- 18:32if there's any reason that there that
- 18:35something is not sufficient or it lacks
- 18:36information, we will let you know so
- 18:38that you can resubmit it.
- 18:42And so, with that, I just want to pop
- 18:44back up to the section in the brief and
- 18:48just say here is a model example of a
- 18:51completed assignment.
- 18:54Okay? So, you can see here that this
- 18:56particular person for the first section
- 18:59has selected class A2 and then has
- 19:02described what happened in the class.
- 19:06And they've used the class A2 again for
- 19:09the next section.
- 19:11And for the next section, they've used
- 19:12B2.
- 19:18So, please do now go and take a look
- 19:21around your own version of the Google
- 19:22Classroom. Check out the brief again if
- 19:24you want to. Go through the grading
- 19:26criteria, the note-taking grid. Make
- 19:28sure you download that so you can make
- 19:30copies on your own computer. Have a look
- 19:32through the model example before you do
- 19:34the assignment. The important thing is
- 19:37to watch all the videos um at least
- 19:39those first three um before you start
- 19:42the assignment. And when you're ready,
- 19:44go to the assignment. Make sure you view
