  1. 0:00Forget everything you've seen in scary
  2. 0:02movies. Hello, my name is Moon and today
  3. 0:04we are breaking down two of the most
  4. 0:06misunderstood philosophies on this
  5. 0:08planet, Satanism and Luciferianism. And
  6. 0:11trust [music] me, the real story is
  7. 0:13probably nothing like what you think.
  8. 0:20>> [music]
  9. 0:24>> To really understand Satanism, we have
  10. 0:26to go way back long before any official
  11. 0:29church even existed. The word Satan
  12. 0:31actually comes from the Hebrew word
  13. 0:33ha-satan, which doesn't mean an evil
  14. 0:35monster. It literally means the
  15. 0:37adversary or the accuser. In ancient
  16. 0:40texts, he was more like a cosmic lawyer
  17. 0:42or a prosecutor whose job was to test
  18. 0:44people's faith. He wasn't the enemy of
  19. 0:47God, yet he was just the guy who asked
  20. 0:50the difficult questions. For centuries
  21. 0:52after that, Satanism didn't actually
  22. 0:54exist as a real religion. It was just
  23. 0:57some kind of label used by the [music]
  24. 0:58church to scare people. If you practiced
  25. 1:01herbal medicine, followed all pagan
  26. 1:03traditions, or just didn't agree with
  27. 1:05the local priest, you were labeled as a
  28. 1:07Satanist. It was basically a political
  29. 1:09tool to get rid of anyone who didn't fit
  30. 1:12in, and nobody was actually out there
  31. 1:14worshipping a gold-headed demon. It was
  32. 1:16just the ultimate boogeyman in the
  33. 1:18public's mind. The big shift happened in
  34. 1:21the 18th century with poets like Lord
  35. 1:24Byron and John Milton. They started
  36. 1:26looking at the character of Satan in
  37. 1:28literature, like in Paradise Lost, and
  38. 1:31saw him differently. To them, he wasn't
  39. 1:33a villain. He was a rebel hero and the
  40. 1:36ultimate underdog fighting against a
  41. 1:38tyrannical authority. This romantic
  42. 1:41Satanism wasn't a religion yet, but it
  43. 1:44set the stage for seeing Satan as a
  44. 1:46symbol of freedom and standing up for
  45. 1:48yourself. Then came modern Satanism, and
  46. 1:51to talk about that, we have to talk
  47. 1:53about one man, Anton Szandor LaVey. Born
  48. 1:56in 1930 as Howard Stanton LaVey, he
  49. 2:00wasn't just a philosopher, he was a
  50. 2:02showman, a musician, and a guy who knew
  51. 2:04exactly how to push society's buttons.
  52. 2:07LaVey's path didn't start in a cave, it
  53. 2:09started in the world of entertainment.
  54. 2:12As a young man, he worked in carnivals
  55. 2:14and circuses playing the organ, and he
  56. 2:17often told a story that changed [music]
  57. 2:19his life. He noticed that the same man
  58. 2:21he saw lusting over half-naked dancers
  59. 2:25at the carnival on Saturday night were
  60. 2:27the same man he saw sitting in church on
  61. 2:30Sunday morning asking God for
  62. 2:32forgiveness. [music] This taught him a
  63. 2:34huge lesson early on. Human beings are
  64. 2:37hypocrites. He realized that people were
  65. 2:39constantly fighting their natural
  66. 2:41instincts [music]
  67. 2:42like sex, pride, and greed because
  68. 2:44religion told them those things were
  69. 2:47sinful. So, LaVey thought, why fight it?
  70. 2:49Why not embrace it? Through the 1950s,
  71. 2:52LaVey started hosting late-night
  72. 2:54lectures in his famous black house
  73. 2:56[music] in San Francisco exploring
  74. 2:59occultism through the lens of
  75. 3:00psychology. He realized that people
  76. 3:02didn't need a god to pray to. They
  77. 3:04needed a ritual and drama to release
  78. 3:07their pent-up emotions. Then came the
  79. 3:10big moment. On Walpurgis Night, April
  80. 3:1330, in 1966, LaVey did something bold.
  81. 3:17He shaved his head, put on his trademark
  82. 3:20ritual collar, and announced the
  83. 3:22formation of the Church of Satan. He
  84. 3:24didn't choose the name Satan because he
  85. 3:27believed in a literal monster with
  86. 3:29horns. He chose it because it was the
  87. 3:31ultimate bad word. He knew that by
  88. 3:34calling himself a Satanist, [music]
  89. 3:36he would get instant attention. It was
  90. 3:39the ultimate middle finger to the status
  91. 3:41quo of the 1960s. He became a media
  92. 3:45sensation, often seen with his pet lion,
  93. 3:47or hanging out with Hollywood stars,
  94. 3:50proving that his version of Satanism
  95. 3:52wasn't about hiding in the shadows. It
  96. 3:54was about living life at 100% and being
  97. 3:58unapologetically yourself. When LaVey
  98. 4:00founded the Church of Satan, he didn't
  99. 4:02want to build a religion for the masses.
  100. 4:05He called it an underground movement for
  101. 4:08the alien elite, people who naturally
  102. 4:10stand out from the crowd. The Church of
  103. 4:12Satan doesn't do conversations or go out
  104. 4:15looking for members. They don't have
  105. 4:17missionaries and most of their members
  106. 4:20never even met each other in person. It
  107. 4:22functions more like a philosophical
  108. 4:24society. Inside the church, they
  109. 4:26practice something called greater magic,
  110. 4:28but they don't think they're casting
  111. 4:30fireballs. To them, magic is just
  112. 4:33applied psychology. [music]
  113. 4:34A theatrical ritual used to release
  114. 4:36emotions like anger, lust, or sadness in
  115. 4:39a controlled environment. One of the
  116. 4:41most misunderstood things about them is
  117. 4:43their stance [music] on law and order.
  118. 4:45People think Satanism means chaos, but
  119. 4:48it's actually opposite. They are very
  120. 4:50strict about rules. Follow the laws of
  121. 4:52the land, don't hurt children or
  122. 4:55animals, and respect [music] other
  123. 4:56people's property. But if someone
  124. 4:58invades your space or tries to harm you,
  125. 5:02you have every right to destroy [music]
  126. 5:04them socially or legally. In their eyes,
  127. 5:06the world is a jungle and by joining
  128. 5:09you're basically saying that you are in
  129. 5:11a control of your own life. You take
  130. 5:13full responsibility for your mistakes
  131. 5:16and you don't need a supernatural God to
  132. 5:18tell you what's right or wrong. Fast
  133. 5:20forward to around 2013 and a new group
  134. 5:23entered the scene, the Satanic Temple.
  135. 5:25These guys completely changed the game.
  136. 5:27If the Church of Satan is an exclusive
  137. 5:30club for individuals, the Satanic Temple
  138. 5:32is a political powerhouse. They don't
  139. 5:35care about LaVey's rituals or his alien
  140. 5:38elite vibes. [music] Instead, they use
  141. 5:40the symbol of Satan as a tool for
  142. 5:42activism. You've probably seen them in
  143. 5:44the news. They're the ones fighting to
  144. 5:46put up giant statues of Baphomet next to
  145. 5:4910 Commandments monuments in front of
  146. 5:51government buildings with the simple
  147. 5:54logic that if you're going to allow one
  148. 5:57religion in public spaces, you have to
  149. 5:59allow them all. The Satanic Temple is
  150. 6:01much more focused on science, bodily
  151. 6:03autonomy, and empathy using Satan not as
  152. 6:06a symbol of me first power, but as a
  153. 6:09symbol of the eternal rebel against
  154. 6:12injustice. Naturally, there is some
  155. 6:14serious beef between these two groups.
  156. 6:17The Church of Satan looks at the temple
  157. 6:20and says, "They're not real Satanists,
  158. 6:22just political activists in black capes
  159. 6:24using the brand to push liberal
  160. 6:26politics." On the other side, the
  161. 6:28Satanic Temple looks at the Church of
  162. 6:30Satan and says, "They're stuck in the
  163. 6:32'60s playing dress-ups in their
  164. 6:34basements while the temple is actually
  165. 6:37out there changing laws and fighting for
  166. 6:39people's rights." [music]
  167. 6:40The Church of Satan is about the
  168. 6:42individual privacy and personal success,
  169. 6:46while the Satanic Temple is about
  170. 6:47society, public activism, and social
  171. 6:50justice. When we peel back all the
  172. 6:53layers of Hollywood horror or modern
  173. 6:56Satanism, at its core, it's a religion
  174. 6:58of self. Satanists are almost always
  175. 7:02atheists who don't believe in a literal
  176. 7:04Satan or God. They believe in individual
  177. 7:07power, meaning you are your own God, and
  178. 7:09you have total accountability for your
  179. 7:12life. They practice rational
  180. 7:13self-interest, taking care of themselves
  181. 7:16and their loved ones first, and enjoying
  182. 7:18[music] earthly pleasures without guilt
  183. 7:20as long as they don't harm those who
  184. 7:22don't deserve it. Now, to understand
  185. 7:25Luciferianism, we have to look at
  186. 7:27completely different root story. The
  187. 7:30name Lucifer comes from Latin, lux
  188. 7:33meaning light and ferre meaning to
  189. 7:35bring, literally translating to the
  190. 7:37light bringer. [music] In the ancient
  191. 7:39world, long before the Bible was put
  192. 7:41together, Lucifer was the Latin name for
  193. 7:44the planet Venus when it appeared in the
  194. 7:46morning sky symbolizing hope and the
  195. 7:49coming sunrise. It had zero connection
  196. 7:51to a devil or evil. The concept of a
  197. 7:53light bringer exist in almost every
  198. 7:56ancient culture like the Greek titan
  199. 7:59Prometheus who stole fire and knowledge
  200. 8:01from the gods to give it to humans so
  201. 8:04they could build civilization. For
  202. 8:06modern Luciferians, Prometheus is the
  203. 8:08blueprint. They don't see a scary demon.
  204. 8:11They see a liberator and a spark [music]
  205. 8:13of intelligence pushing humans to use
  206. 8:15logic, art, and science. So how did a
  207. 8:18Roman name for Venus become the name of
  208. 8:21the devil? It comes down to a
  209. 8:22translation mistake. In the Old
  210. 8:24Testament, a passage mocking a
  211. 8:26Babylonian king used the Hebrew word
  212. 8:29"helel" meaning "shining one". When
  213. 8:31translated into Latin, they used the
  214. 8:33word "Lucifer". Over centuries, people
  215. 8:36stopped seeing it as a poem about
  216. 8:38[music] a fallen king and started
  217. 8:40building a myth about a fallen angel
  218. 8:42turning a name for wisdom into a
  219. 8:44boogeyman. To really get Luciferianism,
  220. 8:47you also have to understand the
  221. 8:49Gnostics, an early group of Christian
  222. 8:51mystics who believed the creator of the
  223. 8:54physical world was a flawed being who
  224. 8:57wanted to keep humanity trapped in blind
  225. 8:59obedience. In their eyes, the Garden of
  226. 9:02Eden was a prison of ignorance. So when
  227. 9:05the serpent appeared, he wasn't a
  228. 9:07villain. He was a divine messenger
  229. 9:09encouraging Eve to eat from the tree of
  230. 9:12knowledge to awaken humanity to its
  231. 9:15potential. For a Luciferian, this
  232. 9:17represents the birth of intellectual
  233. 9:19freedom. In the modern day,
  234. 9:21Luciferianism has evolved into a
  235. 9:24sophisticated philosophy focused on
  236. 9:26spiritual and intellectual evolution.
  237. 9:29Anton LaVey was the showman of Satanism.
  238. 9:32Michael Ford is the librarian and
  239. 9:34philosopher of Luciferianism. [music]
  240. 9:36Ford spent decades studying ancient
  241. 9:40Persian, Babylonian, and Greek texts
  242. 9:42[music] to find the pre-Christian roots
  243. 9:44of the light bringer, writing books
  244. 9:46explaining that Luciferianism is about
  245. 9:49self-deification or apotheosis. Around
  246. 9:522014, he co-founded the Greater Church
  247. 9:56of Lucifer, which functioned more like a
  248. 9:58philosophy lodge focused on
  249. 10:00self-mastery, logic, and balance.
  250. 10:03Luciferians believe everyone has a black
  251. 10:06flame, a spark of divine intelligence
  252. 10:08within, and their goal is to fan that
  253. 10:11flame through constant learning, art,
  254. 10:13and self-discipline. So, if you're
  255. 10:16trying to tell them apart in simple
  256. 10:18terms, here is how these two worlds
  257. 10:20stack [music] up. In Satanism, Satan is
  258. 10:22the rebel who says no to authority,
  259. 10:25representing the flesh, the ego, and
  260. 10:27reacting against suppression. In
  261. 10:29Luciferianism, Lucifer is the teacher
  262. 10:32who says "Grow." Representing the mind,
  263. 10:35enlightenment, [music] and evolving
  264. 10:37beyond your basic animal self. Satanism
  265. 10:40is more materialistic and focused
  266. 10:41[music] on having the best life right
  267. 10:44now through power and success, while
  268. 10:46Luciferianism is idealistic and focused
  269. 10:49on self-mastery through study and
  270. 10:51discipline. Satanists use the fist to
  271. 10:54fight back against religious overreach,
  272. 10:56while Luciferians use the torch to
  273. 10:59search for truth in history,
  274. 11:01>> [music]
  275. 11:01>> science, and the occult. Satanism says,
  276. 11:04"Break the chains and eat the fruit."
  277. 11:06While Luciferianism say, "Eat the fruit,
  278. 11:09but then learn how to grow the whole
  279. 11:11forest." At the end of the day, both
  280. 11:14paths reject the idea of a master and
  281. 11:16put you in the driver's seat of your own
  282. 11:19life. Whether you prefer the raw,
  283. 11:21rebellious energy of Satanism or the
  284. 11:24cold, intellectual pursuit of
  285. 11:26Luciferianism, the message is the same.
  286. 11:28No one is coming to save you, so you
  287. 11:31better save yourself. So, what do you
