2. 0:03when i was 28 to make a long story short
3. 0:05some friends of mine
4. 0:06gave me a copy of the quran and one
5. 0:09night i was sitting in diamond heights
6. 0:11my apartment in diamond heights in san

8. 0:15university of san francisco i was 27 28
9. 0:18at that time i can't remember
10. 0:20i ran out of stuff to read and i took
11. 0:23this gift that my friends gave me and i
12. 0:25began to read it
13. 0:27and i came to the first verse well i
14. 0:30opened the quran
15. 0:31read the first page in the second and
16. 0:33then very quickly
17. 0:34in the second surah about 37 verses into
18. 0:37the quran
19. 0:38i came upon the story of mankind
20. 0:42and i have to admit i read through it
21. 0:44very quickly it was about nine ten
22. 0:45verses long
23. 0:47story of the first man and woman and i
24. 0:49recognized some of the details it was
25. 0:50similar to what i had learned
26. 0:52when i was a child but i noticed that
27. 0:54there was something wrong
28. 0:56it was apparent to me that whoever
29. 0:59authored this quran
30. 1:00of course i wasn't a muslim at the time
31. 1:01so i didn't have any idea who that was
32. 1:04whoever authored this quran clearly did
33. 1:05not understand the real meaning of the
34. 1:07story
35. 1:08his dad obviously gotten the details
36. 1:11confused they even
37. 1:12didn't even understand the whole purpose
38. 1:13of the story
39. 1:16and so i just read through it once and
40. 1:18then i read through it again
41. 1:20just to try to see what kind of point
42. 1:21the author was making and i read through
43. 1:23it a third time and a fourth and then i
44. 1:25realized
45. 1:26this is something strange going on here
46. 1:28i'm going to read this much more
47. 1:29carefully
48. 1:30i'm going to need to go through this
49. 1:31story line by line
50. 1:33verse by verse because it's obvious that
51. 1:35the author is trying to bring out
52. 1:36another point
53. 1:39and i wasn't quite sure what it was but
54. 1:41definitely he packs a lot of meaning
55. 1:44into almost every word
56. 1:47and i thought the writer at least seems
57. 1:48to have a great measure of brilliance
58. 1:53and so i'll try to sort of take you
59. 1:55through what my experience was as
60. 1:56quickly as i can
61. 1:58so i came to the second the 30th verse
62. 2:00of the second surah surah al-baqarah
63. 2:03and it began like this it said behold
64. 2:06your lord said to the angels
65. 2:08i am going to place a vicerent on earth
66. 2:11the arabic word is khalifa it means a
67. 2:12representative or an emissary of mine
68. 2:15i am going to place a vistarin on earth
69. 2:18and they said the angel
70. 2:19said will you place there in one who
71. 2:21will spread corruption and shed blood
72. 2:24while we celebrate your praises and
73. 2:26glorify your holiness
74. 2:29and god said he said truly i know what
75. 2:32you do not know
76. 2:35see that's the verse that hooked me
77. 2:36that's the verse that caught my
78. 2:38attention that's the one that kept on
79. 2:39making me read the story again and again
80. 2:41and again because listen to the way it
81. 2:44begins behold your lord said to the
82. 2:45angels
83. 2:46i'm going to place a representative of
84. 2:48mine on earth a vicerent of mine an
85. 2:50emissary one who acts on my behalf
86. 2:53i thought that's not the way it goes
87. 2:56you're not supposed to be placing man on
88. 2:58the earth in some positive role
89. 3:00some elective office you place man as on
90. 3:04earth as a punishment for a sin
91. 3:07clearly i knew the author didn't quite
92. 3:09get the point
93. 3:10but still it was an amazing line but
94. 3:12then i come to the next line and it says
95. 3:14and the angels say well you placed her
96. 3:17in one and will spread corruption and
97. 3:19shed blood
98. 3:20while we celebrate your praises and
99. 3:22glorify you
100. 3:24i looked at it again i couldn't believe
101. 3:26the question they said will you place
102. 3:28her in one who will spread corruption
103. 3:30and shed blood
104. 3:32while we the angels celebrate your
105. 3:34praises and glorify you
106. 3:37i looked at that and i said exactly that
107. 3:40would be my question
108. 3:43why would you create this being
109. 3:46supposedly for some
110. 3:48positive role when he's capable of doing
111. 3:51tremendous wrongdoing
112. 3:53when he could spread corruption and shed
113. 3:55much blood
114. 3:57why would you create this violent and
115. 3:59pernicious creature
116. 4:01when you could create angels as the
117. 4:04angels clearly say
118. 4:05well we well we the angels celebrate
119. 4:09your praises
120. 4:09and glorify you they're asking one of
121. 4:13the most fundamental questions in the
122. 4:15entire history of religion
123. 4:17why create mute man this
124. 4:20utterly fallible creature this creature
125. 4:24who could rebel against god will who
126. 4:26could do such tremendous wrongdoing who
127. 4:28could wreak havoc
128. 4:29like no other creature on earth when you
129. 4:31can make him angels
130. 4:33and look where the question is being
131. 4:34asked it's being asked in heaven
132. 4:37it's almost like saying look why don't
133. 4:39you just make him angels who'd be up
134. 4:40here in heaven with us you know
135. 4:43why this is making angels pop him into
136. 4:45heaven he's fine
137. 4:47why would you put him on earth where he
138. 4:49could feel distant from you
139. 4:50where he can work out his worse criminal
140. 4:53tendencies act them out
141. 4:55feeling somehow independent and apart
142. 4:57from you and free to do whatever he
143. 4:58wants
144. 4:59when you could just make them angels and
145. 5:01put them in heaven and make them
146. 5:02perfectly submissive to your will
147. 5:05i looked at that question and said
148. 5:07that's my question
149. 5:09i'm not i'm one not even a single verse
150. 5:12into the story of mankind and there
151. 5:15before me i see
152. 5:16my question that whole question
153. 5:19everything that i ever thought
154. 5:20everything that i ever experienced
155. 5:22everything that i ever knew was in that
156. 5:24question
157. 5:25it was if the author took my life and
158. 5:27wanted to pick out exactly the right

160. 5:30humiliate me to provoke me to anger me
161. 5:34why create man this most destructive and
162. 5:37violent
163. 5:38creature when you could make them angels
164. 5:41and then look at the answer and he said

193. 6:45so we turn to the next verse it turns
194. 6:49out that the quran just doesn't dismiss
195. 6:50the question and starts to answer it a
196. 6:52little bit
197. 6:53and in the next verse it says and he
198. 6:56taught adam god taught adam the names
199. 6:59of all things and then he placed them
200. 7:02before the angels and said
201. 7:04tell me their names if you are right so
202. 7:07this verse is clearly referring to the
203. 7:08previous one
204. 7:10but notice what it says now i i from my
205. 7:12own background i remember
206. 7:14adam naming things but it wasn't
207. 7:16connected to any answer to any
208. 7:18philosophical question
209. 7:20but here notice what it says and he
210. 7:21taught adam the names of all things and
211. 7:23i realized already just from the first
212. 7:25verse
213. 7:26you got to read these verses very
214. 7:27carefully because it's packed with a lot
215. 7:29of symbolism and meaning
216. 7:31and he taught adam the names of all
217. 7:34things
218. 7:34so here we see adam is not only just a
219. 7:37creature who knows how to name things
220. 7:38he's acquiring the gift of language but
221. 7:40he's also a learning creature god is
222. 7:42teaching him
223. 7:44then right here right in this verse and
224. 7:45it'll come even clearer in the
225. 7:46subsequent verses
226. 7:48that the very first thing that that the
227. 7:50quran is going to emphasize here
228. 7:52is man's intellect he is a learning
229. 7:54creature
230. 7:55he is taught and what is he taught what
231. 7:57is the what is one of the great
232. 7:59intellectual gifts he's given
233. 8:01in response to the angels question the
234. 8:03gift of language
235. 8:05because through language mankind could
236. 8:07not only learn but he could learn things
237. 8:09not only through his own experience but
238. 8:10he could learn
239. 8:11things that other people have
240. 8:12experienced of times and places that are
241. 8:15hundreds thousands of years and miles
242. 8:18separated from him
243. 8:20and so that all our knowledge becomes
244. 8:22cumulative
245. 8:23every generation learning from the
246. 8:25generation before and i'm learning today
247. 8:27from authors i read from other sides of
248. 8:29the world that may have existed two
249. 8:30thousand years ago
250. 8:32and so we all contribute to our
251. 8:34collective learning and knowledge
252. 8:36and so we'll see later in the quran when
253. 8:38the quran will emphasize this again and
254. 8:40again and again like in one verse it
255. 8:42says read in the name of your lord who
256. 8:43created
257. 8:44created a man out of a tiny creature
258. 8:46that clings
259. 8:47read it commands the reader for your
260. 8:49lord is most bountiful
261. 8:50why is he most bountiful what great gift
262. 8:52did he give you for he taught man the
263. 8:54use of the pen
264. 8:56and through it taught him what he
265. 8:57otherwise could not know
266. 9:00and time and time and time again the
267. 9:02koran will call upon man to use his
268. 9:04intellectual faculties
269. 9:06and swear by his intellectual faculties
270. 9:11and to and to use them correctly
271. 9:15as a because they play a fundamental
272. 9:18role in guiding him to truth
273. 9:21i never came upon a scripture that put
274. 9:22so much emphasis
275. 9:24on the correct use of our intellectual
276. 9:26faculties on the
277. 9:27harnessing of reason and helping us
278. 9:31attain to faith
279. 9:33and he taught adam the names of all
280. 9:34things and then he placed them before
281. 9:36the angels and said
282. 9:38tell me their names if you were right
283. 9:40okay you have this objection to
284. 9:42you have this natural question about
285. 9:44this creation of mankind
286. 9:47here this mankind is this a human being
287. 9:50this human creature is a learning
288. 9:51creature i think it has many
289. 9:53intellectual gifts here
290. 9:55i'm going to place these things before
291. 9:57you tell me their names if you were
292. 9:58right
293. 9:58about man and what did the angels say
294. 10:02in the next verse they say glory to you
295. 10:06we have no knowledge except what you
296. 10:08have taught us
297. 10:09in truth it is you are knowing the wise
298. 10:12they say this would be this task this
299. 10:14intellectual test that's put before them
300. 10:16is beyond their grasp
301. 10:19alone is what they emphasize we have no
302. 10:21knowledge this would take knowledge this
303. 10:23would take an intellect
304. 10:24that they don't possess in truth it is
305. 10:28you
306. 10:28who are knowing the wise you got it it's
307. 10:31easy for you
308. 10:32you have you're the knowing the wise you
309. 10:34have knowledge you have wisdom
310. 10:36but this would take knowledge and wisdom
311. 10:38that is beyond us
312. 10:41and so in the next verse we read and he
313. 10:44said oh adam
314. 10:45tell them tell them their names. and
315. 10:48when he had told them their names notice
316. 10:50how it just like it's nothing for him
317. 10:52for mankind he has this phenomenal
318. 10:54ability
319. 10:56and when he had told them their names as
320. 10:58if it's just a triviality for man
321. 11:00he names them
322. 11:03oh adam tell them their names and when
323. 11:05he had told them their names god said
324. 11:07did i not tell you that i know what is
325. 11:09unseen in the heavens and the earth
326. 11:10and i know what you reveal and conceal
327. 11:15clearly going back to the angel's
328. 11:17question yes you have these natural
329. 11:20concerns about the creation of mankind
330. 11:23yes
331. 11:24he could do these evil things but look
332. 11:26at this tremendous intellect he has
333. 11:31this is something you have overlooked
334. 11:32that you haven't considered
335. 11:35and that's clearly the point of these
336. 11:37verses
337. 11:39even though i under i felt that the
338. 11:41author didn't quite
339. 11:42you know it was as if i realized that he
340. 11:45didn't just didn't misunderstand the
341. 11:47story
342. 11:48he was taking one of the great stories
343. 11:50in the history of humankind one of the
344. 11:52fundamental greatest
345. 11:54stories in the history of mankind and
346. 11:56molding it and using it as a vehicle for
347. 11:58an entirely

349. 12:04and god said did i not tell you that i
350. 12:06know what is unseen in the heavens and
351. 12:08the earth
352. 12:09and i know what you reveal and what you
353. 12:11conceal
354. 12:12in other words didn't i tell you i know
355. 12:14exactly what i'm doing
356. 12:17and then in the next and didn't i not
357. 12:18tell you what i that i know what you
358. 12:20reveal and conceal
359. 12:23we looked at that what question did
360. 12:25their
361. 12:26i mean what did they reveal and what did

384. 13:14but they could also do exactly the
385. 13:16opposite
386. 13:17they could choose to do evil they could
387. 13:19choose to do tremendous good they could
388. 13:20choose to do tremendous violence they
389. 13:22could choose to show tremendous
390. 13:23compassion
391. 13:25they could choose to be you know to live
392. 13:27by falsehood they could choose to live
393. 13:28by the greatest truths
394. 13:31they could be terribly ugly they could
395. 13:32be terribly beautiful
396. 13:36and i up until that point in my life i
397. 13:38like the angels that only saw
398. 13:39one half of one side of the coin
399. 13:43for the first time when i read that
400. 13:44verse believe it or not it was an
401. 13:46eye-opener for me
402. 13:48i had always been obsessed with the evil
403. 13:52potentials of human beings when i read
404. 13:55that verse i realized that
405. 13:57and i had a great example right in front
406. 13:58of me and with my own mom
407. 14:00i realized that i had been blinded by
408. 14:02only one side of human nature
409. 14:06so we go on to the next verse and behold
410. 14:09we said to the angels
411. 14:11bow down to adam and they bowed down
412. 14:14but not so iblis ibilis
413. 14:17like the father of satan satans satanic
414. 14:21beings
415. 14:22forces creatures existences
416. 14:25he refused and was arrogant he was of
417. 14:27those who reject faith
418. 14:30an interesting statement and behold we
419. 14:33said to the angels bow down to adam
420. 14:36and they bowed down bowing down could
421. 14:38symbolize two things
422. 14:40bowing down could symbolize the security
423. 14:42of superiority or potential superiority
424. 14:45of one being over another and so they
425. 14:47bow down to them
426. 14:50bowing down could also mean that they
427. 14:51serve that creature in some respect
428. 14:54of course the quran says that all beings
429. 14:56serve god all created beings serve god
430. 14:59but this verse seems to be indicating
431. 15:00and the rest of the quran will make it
432. 15:02clear
433. 15:02that these angelic beings these angelic
434. 15:06entities will serve the development of
435. 15:08mankind
436. 15:11we'll even see later that the satanic
437. 15:13beings serve
438. 15:14the development of mankind both forces
439. 15:18angelic and satanic
440. 15:19will serve the development of mankind
441. 15:23because one will present man with a
442. 15:25choice to do the most altruistic things
443. 15:28the other will simultaneously and try to
444. 15:30influence man
445. 15:31in the opposite direction and so human
446. 15:34human beings will be moral creatures and
447. 15:36i'll have to make moral decisions that
448. 15:38it's in those moral decisions that they
449. 15:39will grow
450. 15:40spiritually and morally as human beings
451. 15:43and they'll take that
452. 15:44into the next life and the angelic
453. 15:47and the satanic forces will be catalysts
454. 15:49for those moral choices that they make
455. 15:51they will heighten the human being's
456. 15:53awareness of the rightfulness and the
457. 15:55wrongfulness of the choice he's about to
458. 15:57make
459. 15:58and the self the soul the nephs as they
460. 16:01say in arabic
461. 16:02will have to make the ultimate choice
462. 16:03between good and evil
463. 16:06and that choice that test will come
464. 16:07again and again and again
465. 16:09as human beings either grow or decline
466. 16:13and those tests will come again and
467. 16:14again and again to try to help him
468. 16:17towards his spiritual evolution
469. 16:18to bring him back but that choice is
470. 16:21ultimately ours
471. 16:24but i'm getting ahead of myself and so
472. 16:27we've said to the angels bow down to
473. 16:29adam
474. 16:30and they bow down but not so iblis
475. 16:32blesses
476. 16:33satan this rebellious force this evil
477. 16:36prompter
478. 16:37the one who whispers into the human
479. 16:38heart he comes into being
480. 16:42and with the introduction of satan we
481. 16:44have the introduction of
482. 16:45evil that evil influences on human
483. 16:48beings and notice why
484. 16:50iblees does not bow down he refuses
485. 16:53because he was
486. 16:54arrogant you know we often hear that
487. 16:57what's the root of all evil
488. 16:58in the west it's always money greed etc
489. 17:01here the koran says that seems to be
490. 17:04saying that the root of all evil is not
491. 17:05always material wants
492. 17:07it's not always money it's not always
493. 17:08greed at the heart
494. 17:11of evil is arrogance putting yourself
495. 17:15above all others of assigning to
496. 17:18yourself special priority
497. 17:20and neglecting the rights of others
498. 17:24of of pride
499. 17:27and arrogance envy the source of evil
500. 17:32he was of those who reject faith
501. 17:35i looked at that verse and i said okay i
502. 17:38mean i get
503. 17:39why you would create angels to sort of
504. 17:42influence man in a positive direction
505. 17:44but why in this story now are you
506. 17:46introducing satan what sort of role
507. 17:48this was satan play
508. 17:51and then of course you just think about
509. 17:53it for a minute and you say yes
510. 17:55the story is telling us that on one hand
511. 17:57we have these magnanimous urgings come
512. 17:59from one direction
513. 18:00on the other hand we have these satanic
514. 18:02urgings coming from another direction
515. 18:04in other words the quran is telling us
516. 18:06that man is not only a learning creature
517. 18:08but he's a moral creature he has
518. 18:10understanding of right
519. 18:12and wrong and god infuses those
520. 18:15it allows those influences to come to
521. 18:17him man is not only an intelligent being
522. 18:19but a moral being
523. 18:24and we said in the next verse oh adam
524. 18:28dwell you and your spouse in the garden
525. 18:30i mean freely thereof what you wish and
526. 18:32eat freely thereof what you wish
527. 18:34but come not near this tree
528. 18:38for then you will be among the wrong
529. 18:39doers
530. 18:41i looked at this first and i was you
531. 18:44know starting to wonder if the author
532. 18:45was drifting back to the old story
533. 18:47again i was confused and we said oh adam
534. 18:50dwell you and your spouse in the garden
535. 18:52and he'd free the either of what you
536. 18:53wish
537. 18:54but come not near this tree for you will
538. 18:56be among the wrong doers
539. 18:58i thought it was drifting back to the
540. 18:59old story man sins man's punished for
541. 19:01his sins with earthly life
542. 19:03maybe the author is drifting he had a
543. 19:05good idea and now he's drifting back to
544. 19:06the sort of traditional story maybe he
545. 19:08couldn't
546. 19:08make his mind up what story you wanted
547. 19:10except for a couple things about this
548. 19:12verse
549. 19:13and this happened with almost every
550. 19:14verse as i read through it
551. 19:17is that the whole tenor of the passage
552. 19:19is sort of
553. 19:20not the what you would expect i noticed
554. 19:23that the quran in this story has a
555. 19:25tremendous pension for understating
556. 19:26things
557. 19:28because it says uh and said to adam
558. 19:32dwell you and your spouse in the garden
559. 19:34and it's free either of what you wish to
560. 19:35adam and his spouse but come not near
561. 19:37this tree for you will be among the
562. 19:38wrong doers
563. 19:39i mean there's no sense of god being
564. 19:41threatened by the possibility of man
565. 19:42eating from the tree
566. 19:44and this story we don't see the you know
567. 19:46in this verse we don't see that god is
568. 19:47nervous at the prospect
569. 19:48that he's threatened by the prospect
570. 19:50that he's anxious about it
571. 19:53the tree that he picks he picks it seems
572. 19:55like he's just picking out any tree
573. 19:57nothing special about the tree go not
574. 19:59near
575. 20:01this tree for you will be among the
576. 20:03wrong doers
577. 20:05satan will later come to him and tell
578. 20:07him it's a tree of eternal life
579. 20:08of a kingdom that never decays turns out
580. 20:11to be a complete faucet in his part
581. 20:13nothing special about the tree it's just
582. 20:16a tree
583. 20:18god's not nervous at the prospect at all

602. 20:59the wrong doers god is not worried about

604. 21:02it's just warning man making it clear

616. 21:30and on earth will be your dwelling place

620. 21:41rage the anger the violence

622. 21:46that's what i was expecting okay they
623. 21:48eat from the tree where's the rage the
624. 21:49violence

627. 21:55and you're gonna suffer and you're gonna

629. 21:58you're gonna labor

643. 22:36intellectual inferior because she and
644. 22:37the angels
645. 22:39seeing she and satan seduced him and he
646. 22:42just bumbled along and didn't commit in

649. 22:48well i don't mean to make light of it
650. 22:50but the story is

652. 22:54no threat here
653. 22:56it's a matter of fact look at the way it

655. 22:59spouse in the garden and eat free
656. 23:01thereof what you wish but come down this
657. 23:03near this tree for you will be the among
658. 23:04the wronger doers then they make the
659. 23:06mistake but satan caused them to slip
660. 23:08and expel them from the state in which
661. 23:10they were and we said go all you down
662. 23:12some of you being enemies of others will
663. 23:14be adversaries of others
664. 23:15some of you will be adversaries of each
665. 23:17other and earth will be your dwelling
666. 23:18place and provision for a time
667. 23:21this is not a deity losing it
668. 23:24if you look at it i mean on earth will

684. 23:54caused them to slip
685. 23:56i remember i couldn't get that verse out

688. 24:03the greatest sin in the history of the

734. 25:47and then the next verse says and then
735. 25:48they were expelled from the state in
736. 25:50which they were
737. 25:51well what state were they let's cena
738. 25:54let's go back from where we started
739. 25:55first mankind is being taught we see
740. 25:57he's an intellectual being then we show
741. 25:59he's a moral being
742. 26:01moral being means he's a being that's
743. 26:02going to have to make choices
744. 26:04and then god gives him this choice it's
745. 26:06not a huge deal it's not the grave of
746. 26:07sin in the history of humanity by any
747. 26:09means is minor by any standards
748. 26:11they make it though we see that god
749. 26:14originally intended to put man on earth
750. 26:16as his vicerant we see a period of
751. 26:18preparation where he's being prepared
752. 26:19intellectually where he's growing
753. 26:21intellectually where he's growing as a
754. 26:22moral creature
755. 26:24when does god finally put him on earth
756. 26:26what signals that he's ready to begin
757. 26:28he makes his first independent choice
758. 26:31it's not the worst deed in the history
759. 26:33of humanity
760. 26:34it's minor on anybody's scale but it
761. 26:37shows that mankind is ready
762. 26:39to act on his own to be his own
763. 26:43to make his own choices that god has
764. 26:45empowered him to make choices
765. 26:47and he's ready to make them and carry
766. 26:48them out and see them most often to
767. 26:50their expected ends
768. 26:52if god wills and that seems to be the
769. 26:55only real significance of it
770. 26:59but i thought maybe i'm getting this
771. 27:00wrong maybe god just blows off into an
772. 27:03angry rampage the next verse so i look
773. 27:05at the next one and it says
774. 27:06and then adam received words from his
775. 27:08lord
776. 27:10and he turned then god turned to him
777. 27:12mercifully
778. 27:13for his off-returning ever merciful
779. 27:17well if i had any doubts until now that
780. 27:19god is not enraged by what this has
781. 27:21happened
782. 27:22that god hasn't prepared mankind for
783. 27:25this choice
784. 27:26for what was eventually going to happen
785. 27:28that all this was preparation
786. 27:29for mankind to begin his earthly sojourn
787. 27:32in this famous allegory
788. 27:34if i had any doubts before now i had
789. 27:36them certainly didn't have them after
790. 27:38reading this verse
