- 0:00Barbaric savages, criminal rapists, foolish rich people, religious fanatics
- 0:08This is the image that Hollywood deliberately portrays Arabs as
- 0:13According to Professor Jack Shaheen in his book
- 0:17The Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People
- 0:22This negative image did not come from nowhere
- 0:25Shaheen studied over a thousand American films
- 0:28To reveal how Western cinema has presented
- 0:31Arabs and Muslims in this stereotypical image
- 0:34But what is noteworthy is that this is not exclusive to Hollywood only
- 0:39A recent study analyzed 100 films from America
- 0:42Britain, Australia, and New Zealand
- 0:45Found that 90% of them
- 0:47Completely ignored the existence of Muslims
- 0:50As if they do not acknowledge their existence
- 0:52And when they appeared on screens
- 0:54They were portrayed as violent perpetrators in many neighborhoods
- 0:57This prompts us to ask
- 0:59Why did Hollywood deliberately portray Arabs in this manner
- 1:02And what is its impact
- 1:03And can it be changed?
- 1:18The stereotypical image of Arabs and Muslims in the West
- 1:20Is not a recent development
- 1:22Rather, it has been entrenched since the early days of Hollywood in the early 20th century
- 1:26And even long before that
- 1:28Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries
- 1:30Some European Orientalists worked
- 1:33On depicting the Arab region
- 1:35As primitive and backward compared to the West
- 1:39And presented it in their writings and drawings
- 1:41In a condescending manner
- 1:43They depicted the Arab man
- 1:45As a lazy and lustful person
- 1:48Uncivilized and barbaric
- 1:50And lacking Western guidance
- 1:52These images were entrenched in the Western mindset and culture
- 1:56And quickly transferred to Hollywood films
- 1:58So we saw it, for example, in the film
- 2:00The Sheik in 1921
- 2:03Directed by Rudolph Valentino
- 2:05This film depicted the Arab hero
- 2:08As a savage criminal chasing a white Western woman
- 2:12Even the Arab woman did not escape this stereotyping
- 2:15We always saw her on screen as a dancer or a servant
- 2:19As in the films
- 2:21Looking For Danger
- 2:22And Cast a Giant Shadow
- 2:24They ignored the diverse and active roles
- 2:27Of Arab women
- 2:29In family, society, politics, and the economy
- 2:32In art and religion
- 2:34And even in resisting colonialism
- 2:36With the onset of the seventies
- 2:37Politics entered the scene
- 2:39And began to play its game
- 2:41The oil crisis caused by Arabs cutting off oil
- 2:44To countries supporting Israel
- 2:46Concurrent with the October War
- 2:48Changed a lot
- 2:49At that time
- 2:50Palestinians in particular
- 2:52Entered the realm of Western film depiction
- 2:54In a negative and biased manner
- 2:56They became depicted as killers, terrorists, and bombers
- 3:01in movies like
- 3:03Black Sunday
- 3:04True Lies
- 3:05and Delta Force
- 3:07In these movies
- 3:08Palestinians were always the villains
- 3:11and to build a clearer perception of this situation
- 3:13Professor Jack Shaheen observed
- 3:15more than thirty films
- 3:17during the eighties and nineties alone
- 3:20These films depicted
- 3:21Palestinians as terrorists
- 3:24and as threats to American national security
- 3:27And despite the slight decline in distortion
- 3:30it continued to appear in some films
- 3:32as seen in the movie
- 3:34The Munich
- 3:35In this film
- 3:36its Jewish director
- 3:38Steven Spielberg faced criticism
- 3:40merely for attempting to present the Palestinian perspective
- 3:44in the conflict over land and homeland
- 3:47without fully adopting it
- 3:48There is also the comedy film
- 3:51You Don't Mess With The Zohan
- 3:54Despite its humorous nature
- 3:56it carries mockery
- 3:58of the Palestinian character
- 3:59and the Palestinian cause as a whole
- 4:01In contrast
- 4:03Hollywood completely ignored
- 4:05any works that highlight the truth
- 4:07and justice of the Palestinian cause
- 4:09as Jack Shaheen says
- 4:12In my opinion
- 4:13the necessary changes in Palestinians
- 4:15happened after 9-11
- 4:18and it was primarily done
- 4:20in the name of Howard Gordon
- 4:22And the series 24 stood out
- 4:24and Fox Television series
- 4:26did its work in 10 weeks after the cases
- 4:30Before September 11
- 4:32the world had its narrative
- 4:33but after it
- 4:34the story turned upside down
- 4:36and a completely new chapter began
- 4:39Stereotyping was no longer limited to Arabs
- 4:41or Palestinians alone
- 4:43the circle expanded
- 4:45to include Iranians
- 4:46and Afghans
- 4:47and Pakistanis
- 4:48and most importantly
- 4:50American Muslims
- 4:51who were depicted in movies and dramas
- 4:53as the fifth column
- 4:55and potential terrorists
- 4:57The Muslim terrorist
- 4:59became Hollywood's favorite villain
- 5:01and this was evident in films
- 5:02such as
- 5:03Lions for Lambs
- 5:05American Sniper
- 5:06and Thank You for Your Service
- 5:08It reached its peak
- 5:10with the series Homeland
- 5:12developed by Howard Gordon
- 5:14the same person
- 5:15mentioned by Jack Shaheen
- 5:17This series
- 5:18lasted for eight seasons
- 5:20and collected all the negative stereotypes
- 5:23you can imagine about Muslims
- 5:25including
- 5:27depicting them as
- 5:28a hidden threat to Americans
- 5:31The poison that has been broadcast for decades
- 5:33in cinema and television
- 5:34naturally
- 5:36left impacts in reality
- 5:37In a 2014 survey
- 5:39Pew Research Center revealed
- 5:41that half of Americans
- 5:43believe that Islam
- 5:45Encourages violence
- 5:46But today the scene has become
- 5:48Completely different
- 5:49From what it was in the past
- 5:51How so?
- 5:52I will explain to you
- 5:54Despite Hollywood
- 5:55Still being under the influence
- 5:56Of pro-Zionist lobbies
- 5:59In general
- 6:00The increasing number of Arabs and Americans
- 6:02Of Arab descent
- 6:03Who entered the cinema field
- 6:05Has opened the door for the production of films
- 6:07That portray Muslims in a
- 6:09More positive light
- 6:10Every Muslim believes in God
- 6:12We believe that God will return
- 6:14I am sure He will return
- 6:16It will be the end of the world
- 6:19Films like
- 6:20Babel in 2006
- 6:22And the movie Ali
- 6:23In which Will Smith portrayed
- 6:25The legendary boxer
- 6:27Muhammad Ali
- 6:28Also, the film
- 6:29Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
- 6:31In which
- 6:32Egyptian actor Amr Waked starred
- 6:34Then came the Al-Aqsa flood
- 6:36Reaching its impact to the heart of Hollywood
- 6:39Initially
- 6:40The cinema stronghold remained
- 6:41Loyal to its traditions
- 6:42Supporting Israel
- 6:44Where 700 people
- 6:46From the industry celebrities
- 6:47Hastened to sign a petition
- 6:48Condemning Hamas
- 6:49And supporting the Israeli war
- 6:51On Gaza
- 6:52But with the escalation
- 6:53Of Israeli massacres
- 6:54And increased global solidarity
- 6:56With Palestine
- 6:57The picture gradually changed
- 6:59Many celebrities
- 7:01Supporting Israel
- 7:02Stopped daily posting
- 7:03On social media
- 7:05After facing significant backlash
- 7:07From followers
- 7:08As happened with Noah Schnapp
- 7:10Star of the series
- 7:11Stranger Things
- 7:12Who faced significant backlash
- 7:15After sharing a video
- 7:16Mocking Palestinians
- 7:18Before being forced to retract
- 7:20And apologize
- 7:21It didn’t stop there
- 7:23When Israeli actress
- 7:26Gal Gadot
- 7:27Called on Hollywood stars
- 7:28To attend a documentary
- 7:30Prepared by the Israeli government
- 7:32To justify its war on Gaza
- 7:34No one attended
- 7:35Even Gadot herself
- 7:36Didn't attend at all
- 7:37Disney also postponed
- 7:39Its movie Snow White
- 7:41Fearing the film would
- 7:42Suffer major losses
- 7:44Due to public anger
- 7:46Towards its lead actress
- 7:47On the other side
- 7:48Pro-Palestinian voices
- 7:50Began to rise
- 7:51Among these voices
- 7:52We find the Oscar winner
- 7:53Susan Sarandon
- 7:55Who was a regular guest
- 7:57At pro-Gaza rallies
- 7:58In America
- 7:59But
- 8:00Was that enough?
- 8:02Has the representation of Muslims
- 8:04In American cinema become fair?
- 8:06And has their narrative been sufficiently heard?
- 8:09The definite answer
- 8:10Is no
- 8:11Islamophobia still
- 8:13and fear of Muslims
- 8:14remain a weapon in the hands of the American right
- 8:16with wide influence
- 8:18and the pro-Israel lobbies
- 8:20remain the loudest in politics and media in America
- 8:23with money, of course
- 8:25as well as owning
- 8:27global cinema studios
- 8:29most of which are owned by Jewish families
- 8:31as critic
- 8:33Neal Gabler says like
- 8:3520th Century Fox and
- 8:37Warner Brothers
- 8:39There is another fact
- 8:41revealed by Jean-Michel Valentin
- 8:43in his book
- 8:44Hollywood, the Pentagon, and Washington
- 8:46Films and National Security from World War
- 8:48II until now
- 8:50which is that many Hollywood films
- 8:52are produced under the sponsorship
- 8:54of American political
- 8:56and military institutions
- 8:58headed by the Department of Defense
- 9:00which means that they
- 9:02will continue to serve the policy of
- 9:04America and its interests and consequently
- 9:06Arabs and Muslims will continue
- 9:08to be the preferred screen villains
- 9:10with very few
- 9:12exceptions
- 9:14until further notice
- 9:16Goodbye
