  3. 0:08division of infectious diseases and the
  4. 0:10associate Hospital epidemiologist here
  5. 0:12at the University of Iowa hospital today
  6. 0:15we're going to be talking about standard
  7. 0:16and isolation precautions why should you
  8. 0:19be concerned you ask because these
  9. 0:21precautions protect you your co-workers
  10. 0:24our patients and visitors against the
  11. 0:26spread of infection first we'll be
  12. 0:29talking about standard precautions you
  13. 0:30should use standard precautions in
  14. 0:32caring for every patient regardless of
  15. 0:34that patient's diagnosis or whether that
  16. 0:36patient has an infection that you know
  17. 0:38about a crucial step in standard
  18. 0:40precautions is hand hygiene which is the
  19. 0:43absolute Cornerstone of infection
  20. 0:44prevention standard precautions also
  21. 0:47requires the use of personal protective
  22. 0:48equipment depending on the tasks that
  23. 0:50you're performing for example if you're
  24. 0:52drawing blood you need to wear gloves
  25. 0:55other tasks might require wearing a gown
  26. 0:57a surgical mask or eyewear all of these
  27. 1:00will be covered in detail during this
  28. 1:02video in addition to standard
  29. 1:04precautions we have what we call
  30. 1:06isolation precautions there are three
  31. 1:08categories of isolation precautions and
  32. 1:11each one involves a different sign on
  33. 1:13the door to the patient's room I will
  34. 1:16show you an example of each of these
  35. 1:18signs the most frequently used form of
  36. 1:20isolation precautions involves this
  37. 1:22orange sign which is for contact
  38. 1:24precautions this sign and these
  39. 1:27precautions are used when a germ is
  40. 1:29transmitted by direct or indirect touch
  41. 1:32such as touching body fluids or touching
  42. 1:34equipment in the patient's room that
  43. 1:36might be
  44. 1:37contaminated a certain type of germ
  45. 1:39called custum defil is also listed under
  46. 1:43contact precautions and is indicated by
  47. 1:45this pink sign if you see this sign this
  48. 1:48means that staff must use hand gel or
  49. 1:50foam when entering the room but must use
  50. 1:53soap and water when exiting the
  51. 1:56room the next type of isolation
  52. 1:58precautions is design designated by this
  53. 2:00green sign which is for droplet
  54. 2:02precautions droplet precautions are used
  55. 2:04when a germ is transmitted by big
  56. 2:06droplets in the air that settle quickly
  57. 2:08such as when a person coughs or
  58. 2:11sneezes and finally the last type of
  59. 2:13isolation precautions is designated by
  60. 2:15this blue sign which is for airborne
  61. 2:17precautions this means that a germ is
  62. 2:19transmitted by small droplets that
  63. 2:21travel for long distances in the air
  64. 2:24because these are small enough to remain
  65. 2:26Airborne for a long period of Time air
  66. 2:29born precautions involves special rooms
  67. 2:32that have different air handling
  68. 2:34capabilities now you will see scenarios
  69. 2:36that illustrate implementing every one
  70. 2:39of these types of isolation
  71. 2:43[Music]
  72. 2:49precautions let's discuss contact
  73. 2:52precautions contact precautions are
  74. 2:54infections that are spread by direct or
  75. 2:56indirect contact such as touching any
  76. 2:59body fluids are touching the equipment
  77. 3:01in a patient's room patients diagnosed
  78. 3:04with C VRE and MRSA need to be placed in
  79. 3:08contact precautions let's watch a scene

  92. 3:54PPE contact precautions only require
  93. 3:57hand hygiene gown and gloves before
  94. 3:59performing patient care in this case the
  95. 4:01nurse was preparing the patient for
  96. 4:03transport the patient should wear a
  97. 4:05clean hospital gown or robe and wash
  98. 4:08their hands before exiting the room the
