- 0:00Your mind is a battlefield, and you are
- 0:02losing. [music]
- 0:03Every night you lie awake replaying
- 0:05conversations that happened months ago.
- 0:07Every morning you wake up already
- 0:09exhausted by [music] the day ahead. You
- 0:11scroll through endless content trying to
- 0:14find something that will finally make
- 0:16you feel something, anything. You are
- 0:18overthinking. You are overanalyzing. You
- 0:20[music] are paralyzed. Miyamoto Musashi,
- 0:24the undefeated samurai, wrote The Book
- 0:26of Five [music] Rings not as a manual
- 0:28for sword fighting, but as a blueprint
- 0:30for mental domination.
- 0:32>> [clears throat]
- 0:32>> He understood something that modern
- 0:34psychology is only now catching up to.
- 0:37Your brain [music] is not broken. It has
- 0:38simply never been trained. Here is what
- 0:41Musashi knew [music] that you do not.
- 0:43Here is how to fix your mind using the
- 0:45wisdom of Japan's greatest warrior.
- 0:47[music]
- 0:48One, the overthinking trap.
- 0:51Overthinking is not a personality trait.
- 0:53>> [music]
- 0:53>> It is a survival mechanism gone rogue.
- 0:56Your brain believes that if it analyzes
- 0:58every possible outcome, it can prevent
- 1:00[music] disaster. But what actually
- 1:01happens is you become frozen. You cannot
- 1:04move. You cannot act. You cannot live.
- 1:07Musashi wrote, "The primary thing when
- 1:09you take a sword in your hands is your
- 1:11[music] intention to cut the enemy,
- 1:12whatever the means." Notice he does not
- 1:14say, "Think about cutting the enemy." He
- 1:17does not say, "Analyze [music] the best
- 1:19way to cut the enemy." He says your
- 1:21intention must be to cut, period. Here
- 1:24is a story [music] I have seen play out
- 1:26a hundred times. A young man sits in his
- 1:28apartment. He wants to start a [music]
- 1:30business. He has the idea. He has the
- 1:32skills. But he spends six months
- 1:35researching the perfect logo. He [music]
- 1:36watches tutorials on branding. He reads
- 1:39articles about market fit. He never
- 1:41launches. He is afraid of choosing the
- 1:43[music] wrong path. He believes there is
- 1:45a perfect way forward, and he must find
- 1:47it [music] before he acts. Musashi would
- 1:50call this man a fool. In The Book of
- 1:52Five Rings, he describes the principle
- 1:55of [music] no design, no conception.
- 1:58This is the most important method of
- 2:00hitting. It means you do not plan, you
- 2:02do not overthink. [music] When the enemy
- 2:04attacks and you also decide to attack,
- 2:07you hit with your body, hit with your
- 2:08spirit, and hit from the void with your
- 2:11hands, accelerating strongly. The
- 2:13philosophy [music] is simple. You cannot
- 2:15think your way into action. You must act
- 2:17your way into clarity. [music]
- 2:18Bruce Lee understood this. He said,
- 2:20"Don't think, feel." This is not
- 2:23mysticism. This is practicality. [music]
- 2:25Your conscious mind processes about 50
- 2:28bits of information per second. Your
- 2:30subconscious processes millions. When
- 2:32you overthink, you are handicapping
- 2:34yourself. You are using the slow part of
- 2:37your brain to solve problems that
- 2:39require the fast part. Next time you
- 2:41catch yourself in an overthinking
- 2:43spiral, do [music] what Musashi would
- 2:45do. Pick a solution, any solution,
- 2:48commit to it, move [music] forward. If
- 2:50it is wrong, you will learn and adjust.
- 2:52If it is right, you will move faster
- 2:55than 99% of people who are [music] still
- 2:57thinking about it. The warrior does not
- 2:59freeze. The warrior acts. Two, the
- 3:02distraction epidemic. You cannot focus,
- 3:05and it is not your fault. Every app on
- 3:07your phone is designed [music] to hijack
- 3:09your attention. Every notification is a
- 3:12tiny dopamine hit that pulls you away
- 3:14from what matters. You have been trained
- 3:16to be distracted. You have been
- 3:18conditioned to crave the next buzz. Your
- 3:20attention span is shattered. Musashi
- 3:23[music] wrote, "Perception is strong and
- 3:25sight is weak." This is one of the most
- 3:27profound statements in The Book of Five
- 3:29Rings. Perception is seeing the whole.
- 3:32Sight [music] is focusing on the
- 3:33details. Most people fix their eyes on
- 3:36the details and miss the big picture
- 3:38entirely. They stare at the screen and
- 3:40miss the life happening around them.
- 3:42They obsess over one problem and miss
- 3:45the solution that is obvious from a
- 3:47higher vantage point. [music]
- 3:48I watched a friend destroy his
- 3:50relationship this way. He spent hours on
- 3:52his phone. His girlfriend would talk to
- 3:55him [music] and he would nod while
- 3:56scrolling. He was present in body but
- 3:59absent in spirit. She left him. He did
- 4:01not even notice the signs. He was too
- 4:03[music] busy staring at the details to
- 4:05perceive the larger collapse happening
- 4:07right in front of him. Musashi said, "It
- 4:09is important [music] to see distant
- 4:11things as if they were close and to take
- 4:13a distanced view of close things. This
- 4:15is the antidote to distraction. Zoom
- 4:18out. See the bigger picture." When you
- 4:20are scrolling mindlessly, ask yourself,
- 4:22"What am I avoiding?" When you cannot
- 4:24focus on your work, ask yourself, "What
- 4:27is the real problem here?" The answer is
- 4:29usually fear. Fear of failure, fear of
- 4:31boredom, fear [music] of being alone
- 4:33with your own thoughts. He said, "Do
- 4:35nothing which is of no use." This is
- 4:37brutal. This is uncompromising. Ask
- 4:40yourself, "Is what you are doing right
- 4:42now useful?
- 4:42>> [music]
- 4:43>> Is this action moving you closer to your
- 4:45goals or is it just numbing you?" If it
- 4:47is not useful, stop doing it [music]
- 4:49immediately. Three, the discipline of
- 4:52the void.
- 4:54Most people think [music] discipline is
- 4:55about forcing yourself to do things you
- 4:57do not want to do. This is wrong.
- 4:59[music]
- 5:00Discipline is about removing resistance.
- 5:02It is about creating a mental
- 5:04environment where [music] action becomes
- 5:06natural. Musashi wrote about the void.
- 5:09This is not emptiness. It is not
- 5:10nothingness. It is the state where your
- 5:12mind [music] is clear of clutter. No
- 5:14anxiety, no fear, no distraction, just
- 5:17pure focused awareness. [music] The void
- 5:19is where there is nothing. It is not
- 5:22included in man's knowledge. To reach
- 5:24the void, [music] you must let go of
- 5:26attachments. Attachments to outcomes,
- 5:28attachments to comfort, attachments to
- 5:31identity, [music]
- 5:31attachments to fear. I was always
- 5:34terrified of speaking in public. My
- 5:36heart would race. My palms would sweat.
- 5:38[music] My voice would shake. I was
- 5:40attached to the outcome. I needed people
- 5:42to like me. I needed to be perfect. Then
- 5:45I read Musashi. He [music] said, "When
- 5:47you decide to act, do it without
- 5:49hesitation." I stopped caring about the
- 5:51outcome. [music] I stopped needing
- 5:53approval. I just spoke. Some speeches
- 5:55were good, some were bad. [music] It did
- 5:57not matter. What mattered was that I
- 5:59acted. What mattered was that I was not
- 6:02paralyzed. Musashi wrote, "The body of a
- 6:04rock. When you have mastered [music] the
- 6:06way of strategy, you can suddenly make
- 6:08your body like a rock and 10,000 things
- 6:11cannot touch you. This is the ultimate
- 6:14[music] mental state. Nothing can
- 6:16disturb you. Nothing can shake you.
- 6:18Criticism bounces off. Failure doesn't
- 6:20register. You are unmovable. This
- 6:22doesn't mean you are emotionless. It
- 6:24means [music] you are unshakable. Four,
- 6:27the decisive mind. Indecision is [music]
- 6:30a disease. It saps your energy. It
- 6:32destroys your momentum. It keeps you
- 6:34trapped in a loop of [music] what if.
- 6:36Musashi knew this. He described the
- 6:38three methods to forestall the enemy.
- 6:40Ken No Sen, attacking first. Tai No Sen,
- 6:43attacking as the enemy attacks. Tai Tai
- 6:46No Sen, [music] attacking together.
- 6:48Notice something. All three methods
- 6:50involve attacking. There is no wait and
- 6:52see. There is no analyze further. There
- 6:55[music] is action. Tyler Durden had the
- 6:57same mindset. If you could fight, you
- 6:59would have [music] already. This is the
- 7:01hard truth. If you could act, you would
- 7:03have already. If you could start that
- 7:05business, you would have. If [music] you
- 7:07could leave that toxic relationship, you
- 7:09would have. If you could have the
- 7:11difficult conversation,
- 7:12>> [music]
- 7:12>> you would have. You have not acted
- 7:14because you are afraid, and you are
- 7:16afraid because you are attached to the
- 7:19outcome. You want it to go perfectly.
- 7:21>> [music]
- 7:21>> You want to avoid pain. You want
- 7:23certainty. Musashi would laugh at this.
- 7:26>> [music]
- 7:26>> He knew that certainty does not exist.
- 7:28He knew that life is chaos. He wrote,
- 7:31"Timing is in [music] everything. Timing
- 7:33in strategy cannot be mastered without a
- 7:35great deal of practice. You will never
- 7:37be ready. You will never know enough.
- 7:39You will never be certain. The only way
- 7:41to master timing is to practice,
- 7:43>> [music]
- 7:43>> and the only way to practice is to act.
- 7:46There is a reason The Art of War has
- 7:48survived for 2,000 years. [music]
- 7:50It is not because it is beautiful. It is
- 7:53because it is true. Sun Tzu wrote, "The
- 7:56opportunity [music] to secure ourselves
- 7:58against defeat lies in our own hands,
- 8:00but the opportunity of defeating the
- 8:02enemy is provided [music] by the enemy
- 8:04himself." You cannot control what
- 8:06happens to you. You can only control how
- 8:09you respond. And how you respond
- 8:11determines everything. Five, the warrior
- 8:14mindset.
- 8:16Here is [music] what it comes down to.
- 8:17You are not special. Your anxiety is not
- 8:20unique. [music] Your problems are not
- 8:22unprecedented. Millions of people have
- 8:24faced worse with less and come out
- 8:26stronger. Musashi trained in isolation
- 8:29on a mountain. He meditated. He [music]
- 8:30fought. He studied. He did not whine
- 8:33about his feelings. He did not blame his
- 8:35circumstances. He sharpened his mind
- 8:38like a blade. You can do the same. Stop
- 8:41expecting life to be easy. Stop [music]
- 8:43waiting for the perfect moment. Stop
- 8:45overthinking every decision. Start
- 8:47acting. Start failing. [music] Start
- 8:50learning. Musashi wrote, "The true way
- 8:52of sword fencing is the craft of
- 8:54defeating the enemy in a fight and
- 8:56nothing [music] other than this." Your
- 8:57enemy is not another person. Your enemy
- 9:00is your own mind. Your enemy [music] is
- 9:02fear. Your enemy is distraction. Your
- 9:05enemy is comfort. Defeat them. Six, the
- 9:08final truth.
- 9:10Here is [music] the uncomfortable
- 9:11reality. You will die. Not someday.
- 9:14Today. This moment. Every second you
- 9:16waste is a second you will never get
- 9:18back. Musashi knew this. [music] He
- 9:20lived with death as a constant
- 9:22companion. He fought more than 60 duels.
- 9:25He could have died in [music] any of
- 9:26them. And yet, he didn't hesitate. He
- 9:28didn't overthink. He acted. He wrote,
- 9:31"From youth, my heart has been inclined
- 9:33toward the way [music] of strategy."
- 9:34This is the key. It is not about finding
- 9:37the right strategy. It is about being
- 9:39the right person. It is about becoming
- 9:41someone [music] who acts, someone who
- 9:43decides, someone who moves forward.
- 9:46There's a scene in Breaking Bad where
- 9:48Walter White says, "I am the danger."
- 9:50This [music] is the energy you need. You
- 9:53are the danger. You are the threat to
- 9:56your own [music] mediocrity. You are the
- 9:58force that will shatter your
- 9:59limitations. Stop waiting for
- 10:01permission. [music]
- 10:02Stop looking for a sign. Stop hoping for
- 10:05an easy path. Pick up the sword. Cut
- 10:07through the noise. [music]
- 10:08Act now. Seven, the method. Here is what
- 10:12you do. Start small. Pick one thing
- 10:14[music] you have been avoiding, one
- 10:15decision you have been delaying, one
- 10:17conversation you have been dreading. Act
- 10:19on it today. [music]
- 10:20Do not plan. Do not prepare. Do not
- 10:23think. Just act. Musashi wrote, "The
- 10:26spirit [music] of defeating a man is the
- 10:28same for 10 million men." This means the
- 10:31skill is transferable. Once you learn
- 10:33[music] to act in small things, you
- 10:35learn to act in big things. Once you
- 10:37defeat the small enemy, the big enemy
- 10:39[music] becomes nothing. Build momentum.
- 10:42Start with micro decisions. Choose what
- 10:45to eat quickly. Choose what to wear
- 10:46quickly. Choose your direction quickly.
- 10:49Train your brain to decide. Train it to
- 10:51move. Train it to win. Then scale up.
- 10:54Make bigger decisions faster. Take
- 10:56bigger risks. Go after bigger goals.
- 10:58[music] Musashi wrote, "One man can beat
- 11:0110, so a thousand men can beat 10,000."
- 11:04[music] This is the mathematics of
- 11:05momentum. Small wins compound. Small
- 11:08decisions lead to big [music] results.
- 11:10Small actions lead to massive
- 11:12transformation. Eight, the void awaits.
- 11:16Your mind is cluttered. [music] Your
- 11:17attention is scattered. Your will is
- 11:19weak. But it does not have to be this
- 11:21way. Musashi gave you the blueprint.
- 11:23Five books, five elements, five paths to
- 11:26clarity. Ground, know your foundation.
- 11:29Water, adapt to any situation. Fire,
- 11:32attack with intensity. [music] Wind,
- 11:34understand your competition. Void, empty
- 11:37your mind and act. You do not need to
- 11:39read all five.
- 11:40>> [music]
- 11:40>> You do not need to understand every
- 11:42teaching. You just need to start. Pick
- 11:44one principle, apply it today, then
- 11:47apply it again tomorrow. Musashi wrote
- 11:49this book [music] at 60 years old. He
- 11:51had spent a lifetime mastering strategy.
- 11:53He had fought and won. He had studied
- 11:56and trained, and he distilled it all
- 11:58into a few hundred pages. You have no
- 12:00excuse. Read it, apply it, become it,
- 12:03[music] or continue living in your own
- 12:04mental prison. The choice is yours. The
- 12:07void is waiting, and the sword is in
- 12:09your hand. Now go, act, win. There is
- 12:12nothing else. Thank you for [music]
