- 0:05what is up ewoo crew
- 0:06today we are taking a look at cases with
- 0:08unexpected and surprising twists
- 0:12some of these cases are so unbelievable
- 0:14that you just may think they are from a
- 0:16movie script
- 0:17rather than real life but each and every
- 0:20one of them
- 0:21is one hundred percent true our first
- 0:25case is shocking
- 0:26and complicated with more twists than
- 0:28you will ever see coming
- 0:30this is not your typical story of murder
- 0:34it is more than just one tragedy but
- 0:36many
- 0:37wrapped up together in an almost
- 0:39unbelievable way
- 0:42as a teenager sharon marshall appeared
- 0:44to have the whole world
- 0:46open to her she was reportedly a
- 0:48lieutenant colonel in the rotc
- 0:51and one of the best and brightest
- 0:52students in her class
- 0:54an undeniably intelligent young woman
- 0:57with a kind heart to match
- 0:59upon graduating from high school in 1986
- 1:03from forest park georgia
- 1:05sharon had earned a full ride
- 1:06scholarship to the georgia institute of
- 1:09technology
- 1:09with the plan to study aerospace
- 1:12engineering
- 1:13so that she could fulfill her dream of
- 1:15working at nasa
- 1:16despite this incredible opportunity
- 1:19sharon never went to college
- 1:21as she was harboring a secret sharon was
- 1:25pregnant during the
- 1:26final months of high school by her
- 1:27boyfriend who she never told about the
- 1:30baby
- 1:31sharon hid her secret well and she ended
- 1:34up giving birth
- 1:35and allowing a wealthy couple from texas
- 1:38to adopt the baby boy
- 1:40however the pregnancy had shaken up her
- 1:43life plans
- 1:44and at one point she apparently even
- 1:47tried unsuccessfully
- 1:48to run away with her boyfriend
- 1:51after losing her chance to attend
- 1:54college
- 1:55sharon ended up moving to tampa florida
- 1:57for a new start
- 1:58with a man named franklin delano floyd
- 2:02despite having moved with frank sharon
- 2:05started to date another man
- 2:07and she was soon pregnant for a second
- 2:09time
- 2:10she once again never told the baby's
- 2:12father about the pregnancy
- 2:15this time however she chose to keep the
- 2:17child
- 2:18and raise it with frank sharon gave
- 2:21birth to her
- 2:22son michael gregory marshall in 1988.
- 2:26frank and sharon had a complicated
- 2:28relationship
- 2:29it wasn't quite clear if it was romantic
- 2:32or not
- 2:33but the two lived together and both
- 2:35provided for sharon's son michael
- 2:38frank worked as a painter but he
- 2:40frequently suffered from a bad back
- 2:42and so he was rarely able to actually
- 2:45work
- 2:46because of this sharon became an exotic
- 2:49dancer to provide for them
- 2:51but they also began to rely on welfare
- 2:54checks to survive
- 2:56her co-workers thought of sharon as kind
- 2:58and friendly
- 2:59but she was especially close to an
- 3:01eighteen-year-old co-worker
- 3:03named cheryl commesso despite the
- 3:06women's friendship
- 3:08frank and cheryl were known to have
- 3:09frequent disagreements
- 3:11though there were reports that the two
- 3:13of them may have been involved
- 3:15in a brief relationship on a weekend in
- 3:181989
- 3:20frank sharon and cheryl went on a
- 3:22boating trip together
- 3:23where a fight broke out between cheryl
- 3:26and frank
- 3:27following the argument cheryl allegedly
- 3:30reported sharon to social services
- 3:32for misrepresenting her true income as
- 3:35an exotic dancer
- 3:37sharon had been hiding some of the money
- 3:39she made to still
- 3:40get checks from the government but
- 3:43cheryl's call
- 3:44meant that sharon no longer qualified
- 3:46for welfare aid
- 3:48enraged by cheryl's actions frank went
- 3:51to the club where sharon and cheryl both
- 3:53worked
- 3:54and confronted her just outside the
- 3:56business
- 3:58witnesses reported that frank actually
- 4:00punched cheryl in the face
- 4:01during the altercation shortly after
- 4:05cheryl left her father's house to travel
- 4:07to stay with a friend
- 4:09but when she never called her dad to
- 4:11tell him that she had arrived safely
- 4:14he reported her missing her abandoned
- 4:17corvette was discovered at the airport
- 4:19and an investigation ensued to find the
- 4:22missing woman
- 4:24both frank and sharon were seen as
- 4:26persons of interest but for years
- 4:29no evidence ever arose to connect them
- 4:32to cheryl's disappearance
- 4:34the two quickly packed up and left the
- 4:36area
- 4:37which only increased suspicion
- 4:39especially since they started using
- 4:41different names as they traveled
- 4:44frank and sharon ended up getting
- 4:46married in 1989
- 4:48and frank claimed it was to give
- 4:50sharon's son his family name to belong
- 4:52to
- 4:53though the couple frequently went by
- 4:55different aliases
- 4:57they ended up in tulsa oklahoma where
- 5:00sharon was once again
- 5:01working as an exotic dancer sharon
- 5:04easily made friends everywhere the
- 5:06couple went
- 5:08but no one seemed to like frank as he
- 5:10was aggressive
- 5:11and unpleasant reportedly frank once
- 5:14again
- 5:15got into a fight with another dancer
- 5:17sharon worked with
- 5:18and when the woman yelled that sharon
- 5:21should leave him
- 5:22he responded if she ever left me i'd
- 5:25kill the
- 5:27little did frank know sharon was making
- 5:30plans to leave him for a man she had met
- 5:32at the club where she worked
- 5:35allegedly sharon would have left frank
- 5:37earlier
- 5:38but she was afraid of what he would do
- 5:40to her
- 5:41or her son michael before she was ever
- 5:45able to leave though
- 5:46sharon was the victim of a sudden
- 5:48accident
- 5:49she was found unconscious by a highway
- 5:52and it appeared as though she had been
- 5:54the victim of a hit and run
- 5:56frank claimed that he was asleep at the
- 5:58time of the accident
- 6:00though rushed to the hospital sharon
- 6:02never regained consciousness
- 6:05her friends from the club would come to
- 6:07visit her where she recovered
- 6:09and many claimed that she was getting
- 6:11better but frank soon banned them from
- 6:14seeing her without explanation
- 6:17five days after the incident sharon died
- 6:20from her injuries but many were
- 6:22suspicious of frank's strange actions
- 6:25especially since sharon seemed to be
- 6:27recovering before suddenly dying
- 6:30the doctor was also suspicious and based
- 6:33off of old bruises he noticed on her
- 6:35body
- 6:36he classified her death as a homicide
- 6:39and even said that the head injury that
- 6:41killed sharon
- 6:42may not have been caused by a vehicle
- 6:45though no one could prove that frank had
- 6:47been the one to run
- 6:48over sharon or that he had possibly
- 6:51killed her while in the hospital
- 6:53many came to that same conclusion
- 6:56especially when her co-workers had been
- 6:58the ones to pay for her headstone
- 7:00rather than frank frank soon contacted
- 7:04life insurance companies
- 7:06to claim the 80 000 policy he had taken
- 7:09out on sharon
- 7:10only a few months prior to her death
- 7:14the problem was that frank frequently
- 7:15used aliases
- 7:17and so the social security numbers he
- 7:19provided never matched his name
- 7:22after a few tries he finally provided
- 7:24his real name
- 7:26frank delano floyd it was then that all
- 7:29of frank's lies began to unravel
- 7:33it turned out that he had quite the
- 7:34criminal history
- 7:36when frank was 19 in 1962
- 7:39he was convicted of abducting and
- 7:41assaulting a four-year-old girl
- 7:44which resulted in him being sentenced to
- 7:46serve 10 to 20 years in prison
- 7:49however he escaped the mental hospital
- 7:51where he was first placed
- 7:53by stealing a vehicle frank's shocking
- 7:56story was only beginning
- 7:58as the day after his escape he robbed a
- 8:01bank
- 8:02and was subsequently captured again
- 8:05in 1972 frank was released
- 8:08but almost immediately he tried to
- 8:10abduct a woman from a gas station
- 8:13and was once again arrested this time
- 8:16however
- 8:17he paid his bail but skipped his court
- 8:20date
- 8:20a federal warrant was issued for his
- 8:22arrest but he quickly vanished
- 8:25and began using fake names while on the
- 8:27run
- 8:28that is until he finally had to give his
- 8:31real full name to the life insurance
- 8:33company
- 8:35frank attempted to flee from authorities
- 8:37but he was soon captured in georgia
- 8:40and placed in prison to finish his
- 8:42sentence
- 8:43for the friends of sharon they felt that
- 8:45frank's arrest
- 8:46was a way to serve justice to her
- 8:49untimely death
- 8:50[Music]
- 8:52during this time frank had reportedly
- 8:54given michael to social services before
- 8:56he went on the run
- 8:58and michael was soon put into the foster
- 9:00care system
- 9:01where he was placed with a loving family
- 9:04however
- 9:05everyone was shocked by the little boy's
- 9:07behavior as he appeared to be non-verbal
- 9:10and would only scream and moan to
- 9:12communicate
- 9:14frank insisted he was michael's father
- 9:16and so the child was frequently brought
- 9:18to visit him
- 9:19while incarcerated when michael showed
- 9:22hesitance to visit frank
- 9:24a dna test was eventually performed
- 9:27even though frank initially resisted it
- 9:30was discovered
- 9:31that despite what frank said michael was
- 9:34not his biological child
- 9:36and so the visits were stopped but this
- 9:39shocking story doesn't end here
- 9:42and it was far from over when frank was
- 9:45finally released from prison in
- 9:47september of 1994
- 9:49after serving four years he started
- 9:52stalking michael and his foster parents
- 9:54in oklahoma
- 9:56he knew he would never be given custody
- 9:58of the child
- 9:59and so he devised a plan to take him
- 10:03on september 12 1994 frank showed up at
- 10:06michael's elementary school
- 10:08and demanded to see the principal james
- 10:10davis
- 10:12when he wasn't allowed to take michael
- 10:14frank pulled out a gun
- 10:16and threatened davis michael was finally
- 10:19collected
- 10:19all without alerting anyone at the
- 10:21school and frank forced the principal
- 10:24under gunpoint to take the two of them
- 10:26to an area
- 10:27a few miles from the school grounds
- 10:30there frank tied davis to a tree leaving
- 10:33him
- 10:34unharmed and fled with michael in davis
- 10:37truck
- 10:38when the abduction was finally known a
- 10:40frantic
- 10:41search began but it would take two long
- 10:44months
- 10:44for anything to be discovered frank was
- 10:48found in louisville kentucky
- 10:49and arrested but there was no sign of
- 10:52michael
- 10:53even after extensive searches there was
- 10:56no trace of what had happened to the
- 10:58little boy
- 10:59and frank refused to tell anyone talking
- 11:02about michael to the police
- 11:04frank stated it's none of your business
- 11:07where he is nor do i care how much any
- 11:09of you in oklahoma miss him or
- 11:11love him the first of many twists was
- 11:15revealed during frank's trial for
- 11:17kidnapping michael
- 11:18in 1995 skeletal remains were found
- 11:22covered in vines in pinellas county
- 11:23florida
- 11:25the remains weren't immediately
- 11:26identified but an investigation
- 11:29determined that the victim had died from
- 11:31a beating
- 11:32and two gunshot wounds to the head later
- 11:35that year
- 11:36a mechanic in kansas purchased the truck
- 11:38at an auction
- 11:39and inside he found a large envelope
- 11:42filled with
- 11:4297 photographs depicting a woman who had
- 11:45been beaten
- 11:46and bound the truck had once been in the
- 11:49possession of frank floyd
- 11:51who had stolen it while he was passing
- 11:53through the area in 1994.
- 11:56before eventually abandoning it the
- 11:59photos were compared to the unidentified
- 12:01remains
- 12:02and a wound to the photographed woman's
- 12:04cheekbone matched one on the recovered
- 12:07skull
- 12:08the skeleton was soon named as belonging
- 12:10to cheryl commesso
- 12:13frank was convicted for kidnapping
- 12:15michael who still hadn't been found
- 12:17but was classified as missing and he was
- 12:20consequently sentenced to 52 years in
- 12:23prison
- 12:24he then went on trial for the murder of
- 12:26cheryl commesso
- 12:27where he was found guilty and sentenced
- 12:29to the death penalty
- 12:32but the photos uncovered in the truck
- 12:34revealed something else
- 12:35even more shocking bringing to light
- 12:37another twist
- 12:38in this case the pictures also showed
- 12:42frank assaulting a young girl
- 12:44but these images were much older than
- 12:46the ones of cheryl
- 12:47a search began to find the identity of
- 12:50the girl
- 12:52this is where the case took an alarming
- 12:54turn
- 12:55it wasn't until 2014 that sharon's true
- 12:59identity was officially uncovered
- 13:02to find the truth about sharon and the
- 13:04pictures we have to go back
- 13:06after being released from prison and
- 13:09while he was on the run for attempted
- 13:10abduction
- 13:11frank got married in the mid-1970s to
- 13:14sandy chipman
- 13:16at the time he had used the alias
- 13:18brandon williams
- 13:20and so sandy hadn't known who he really
- 13:22was
- 13:23the marriage was far from romantic
- 13:26especially as it had begun with them
- 13:28tying the knot at a truck stop
- 13:30sandy had four kids at the time and she
- 13:33herself
- 13:34didn't have the cleanest record she left
- 13:37her kids in frank's care
- 13:38when she had to spend 30 days in jail
- 13:41after being caught
- 13:42passing bad checks when sandy was
- 13:45finally released from prison
- 13:47she found that her house was empty and
- 13:50her children
- 13:51gone it appeared that frank had taken
- 13:54them
- 13:54and moved it took sandy years to figure
- 13:57out where her children had ended up
- 13:59but she eventually found two of her
- 14:01daughters alison and amy
- 14:04living with a social services group
- 14:06despite this
- 14:08sandy couldn't locate her oldest
- 14:09daughter suzanne
- 14:11or her son phillip her son was
- 14:13eventually found when as a grown man
- 14:16philip came forward and had a dna test
- 14:18to reveal that they were related
- 14:21frank had put him up for adoption but
- 14:23what happened to sandy's oldest daughter
- 14:26is even more shocking sharon marshall's
- 14:29real name
- 14:30was suzanne marie savarkis and she was
- 14:33the daughter
- 14:33of sandy chipman in a truly alarming
- 14:37twist
- 14:38frank had taken sandy's children and
- 14:40split them up
- 14:41over different social services groups
- 14:43but ray suzanne
- 14:44is his own daughter frank and suzanne
- 14:47moved frequently
- 14:48and across several different states
- 14:51frank told many different stories to
- 14:53those around him
- 14:54about how he had come to care for the
- 14:56young girl but in most
- 14:58he claimed to have rescued her when she
- 15:00was abandoned by her parents
- 15:03at this time he was calling her by the
- 15:05alias of
- 15:06tanya hughes yet by the time that the
- 15:09young girl graduated from high school
- 15:12she was going by the name of sharon
- 15:14marshall
- 15:15it turns out that sharon was kidnapped
- 15:18as a child by frank
- 15:19her own stepfather who raised her
- 15:22frequently assaulted her
- 15:23later married her when she was an adult
- 15:26possibly killed her
- 15:27and then kidnapped her child after she
- 15:30died
- 15:32it was a twist that investigators found
- 15:34too unbelievable to be real
- 15:36and yet it was true also revealed in
- 15:402014
- 15:41was that after almost 20 years of lies
- 15:44frank finally admitted to what many had
- 15:46suspected by this time
- 15:48that he had murdered michael by shooting
- 15:51him while on the run
- 15:52he had hidden his body along interstate
- 15:5535
- 15:56but an intensive search didn't reveal
- 15:58anything
- 15:59it was later concluded that michael's
- 16:01body may have been eaten by
- 16:03wild hogs in the area frank floyd was
- 16:07never found guilty of sharon's murder
- 16:09though popular consensus believes he is
- 16:11also guilty of this crime
- 16:14to this day he refuses to talk about
- 16:16sharon's death
- 16:18frank is still awaiting his penalty for
- 16:20cheryl's murder on
- 16:22death row
- 16:25our next case is no less shocking or
- 16:27tragic
- 16:29on august 24th 1980 gregory vilman was
- 16:33born to his parents
- 16:34jean-marie and christine vilman the
- 16:37family lived in la panch servaion in
- 16:40eastern france
- 16:41where jean-marie worked as a factory
- 16:43foreman after being promoted
- 16:46the couple had just moved into a newly
- 16:48built home
- 16:49soon before welcoming their bright baby
- 16:51boy
- 16:52by all accounts the family was happy and
- 16:55successful
- 16:56but then things took a startling turn
- 17:00the vilmon family began receiving
- 17:02anonymous threatening letters and phone
- 17:04calls
- 17:05promising revenge against jean-marie
- 17:08the letters and calls never specified
- 17:10what the sender wanted revenge for
- 17:13only that they were seeking it over four
- 17:16years the threats continued
- 17:19and expanded to include jean-marie's
- 17:21parents as well
- 17:23then on october 16th 1984
- 17:27while playing in the garden
- 17:28four-year-old gregory
- 17:30disappeared christine quickly noticed
- 17:33that her son
- 17:34wasn't on the front yard anymore and
- 17:36called the police
- 17:39as the police began their search
- 17:41christine drove around the nearby small
- 17:43village in a panic
- 17:45no trace of the four-year-old could be
- 17:47found
- 17:49as the search continued gregory's uncle
- 17:51received an anonymous phone call that
- 17:53stated
- 17:54i've kidnapped the boy i've strangled
- 17:57him and i've thrown him in the river
- 17:58bayonne i have my revenge
- 18:02the next day before anything could be
- 18:04further explored
- 18:06jean-marie found a letter that appeared
- 18:08to be posted to them
- 18:09at the time gregory was taken it read
- 18:13i hope you die of grief boss your money
- 18:16won't bring back your son
- 18:18here's my revenge you
- 18:22gregory's body was found later that day
- 18:24near docel
- 18:25in the bayonne river only seven
- 18:28kilometers from his home
- 18:30he had been drowned with his hands and
- 18:32feet bound and his wool hat pulled over
- 18:35his face
- 18:36his family was absolutely devastated
- 18:41the case of gregory's murder which
- 18:43horrified the french public
- 18:44became known as the affair de gregory
- 18:48the killer was soon referred to as le
- 18:51carbo
- 18:52or the crow based off of a famous french
- 18:54film that had a similar theme to the
- 18:56threatening notes the family had
- 18:58received
- 19:00after intense investigation police had a
- 19:03suspect
- 19:04narrowed down by handwriting experts who
- 19:06analyzed the ominous letters
- 19:08and a key witness statement in 1985
- 19:12bernard laroche jean-marie's cousin was
- 19:15arrested and questioned
- 19:17based on a statement from his
- 19:18fifteen-year-old sister-in-law
- 19:21but laroche denied being the crow and
- 19:24soon his sister-in-law
- 19:25took back her statement saying that it
- 19:28had been coerced
- 19:30even though laroche was eventually
- 19:32cleared and freed
- 19:33jean-marie stood in front of reporters
- 19:36and made a vow that he believed laroche
- 19:38was guilty of murdering his son
- 19:40and that he would kill him but the case
- 19:44took another shocking twist
- 19:46on march 25th 1985 when the handwriting
- 19:50experts determined that gregory's own
- 19:52mother christine
- 19:53may have written the threatening letters
- 19:56only four days later jean-marie went to
- 19:59laroche's work
- 20:00determined to avenge the death of his
- 20:02son and not believing that his wife was
- 20:05guilty
- 20:07there he shot and killed his own cousin
- 20:09as he was leaving the building
- 20:12jean-marie was convicted of murder and
- 20:14sentenced to five years in prison
- 20:17in july of the same year christine was
- 20:20charged with the murder
- 20:21of their son she was pregnant with twins
- 20:24at the time
- 20:25but went on a hunger strike to protest
- 20:27her innocence
- 20:29for 11 days she refused to eat and she
- 20:32was eventually freed after an appeal
- 20:34found that she had been convicted with
- 20:36flimsy evidence
- 20:37and no real motive however
- 20:40christine's tragedy wasn't over yet
- 20:43as she was released she collapsed and
- 20:46reportedly miscarried one of her babies
- 20:49she wasn't officially cleared of all
- 20:51charges until 1993
- 20:54and jean-marie was released from prison
- 20:56after serving only two and a half years
- 20:59in 1987. after so much turmoil
- 21:03the wilmon family was still no closer to
- 21:06knowing who had killed gregory
- 21:09for decades after gregory's death the
- 21:11case continued to haunt france
- 21:14and was reopened and re-examined with
- 21:16tests done to the letters
- 21:18the rope used to bind him and dna
- 21:20testing on gregory's clothing and the
- 21:22saliva on the stamps used to post the
- 21:25letters
- 21:26but it was no use all was found to be
- 21:29inconclusive
- 21:31in 2017 the case was once again
- 21:35reopened and this time there was new
- 21:37evidence which resulted in three arrests
- 21:40once again shocking france gregory's
- 21:44great aunt
- 21:44great uncle and his aunt were taken in
- 21:47for questioning
- 21:48along with others including more family
- 21:51members
- 21:52the ant was eventually released but the
- 21:55great aunt
- 21:56and great uncle refused to speak to
- 21:58police at all
- 22:00none were convicted a different tragedy
- 22:03soon struck when the magistrate
- 22:06jean-michel lambert
- 22:07who was in charge of the first
- 22:09investigation took his
- 22:10own life because of the pressure and
- 22:13criticism he faced with the case still
- 22:15being unsolved
- 22:1633 years after gregory's death
- 22:19[Music]
- 22:20the why of gregory's death has never
- 22:22been answered
- 22:23but some cite jealousy within the wilmon
- 22:26family as a possible cause
- 22:28and others suggest that the fact that
- 22:30the letters called jean-marie
- 22:32boss could mean it had to do with his
- 22:34work
- 22:35either way no real evidence or suspect
- 22:38has been found
- 22:40but almost everyone in the vilmon family
- 22:42has been under suspicion
- 22:44at some point in december of 2020
- 22:48the case was once again reopened but
- 22:51this time police are determined to
- 22:53uncover the real
- 22:54identity of the crow once and for all
- 22:57new interviews have been conducted and
- 23:00police are relying on a brand new
- 23:02technology called
- 23:03stylometrics which looks at the style
- 23:06syntax
- 23:07punctuation and turns of phrase used in
- 23:09the threatening letters to identify the
- 23:12killer
- 23:13a new suspect has been identified but so
- 23:16far
- 23:16has not yet been named it appears that
- 23:20the murder of gregory vilman
- 23:22may soon be solved
- 23:26our next case is not a normal missing
- 23:28person's case
- 23:29and has a twist that seems too
- 23:31surprising to possibly be true
- 23:34and yet it is nicholas barclay was born
- 23:38december 31
- 23:391980 as the youngest to two older
- 23:42siblings
- 23:43he had a rather normal childhood in san
- 23:45antonio texas
- 23:47but as a pre-teen he started to develop
- 23:49a reputation
- 23:50as a troubled kid nicholas was known to
- 23:54have a history of fighting physically
- 23:56and verbally with his mother
- 23:57skipping school threatening his teachers
- 24:00stealing shoes
- 24:02and even breaking into a convenience
- 24:04store
- 24:05by only 13 nicholas had a juvenile
- 24:08criminal record for his antics
- 24:10and allegedly three tattoos that his
- 24:12friends had given him with an
- 24:13unsterilized needle
- 24:16at some point nicholas was diagnosed
- 24:18with attention deficit disorder
- 24:21his mother was reportedly so exasperated
- 24:24with his demanding supervision
- 24:26that she asked her older son jason to
- 24:29come and live with her to aid in the
- 24:31young boy's caretaking
- 24:33on june 13th 1994 nicholas called home
- 24:37looking for someone to pick him up after
- 24:39playing basketball in his neighborhood
- 24:42his older brother jason answered the
- 24:44phone but refused to wake up their
- 24:47mother who had been working
- 24:48late nights and instead told nicholas to
- 24:51walk home
- 24:52but he never arrived unfortunately
- 24:56with nicholas's reputation few believed
- 24:59something was
- 25:00wrong when the 13 year old couldn't be
- 25:02found
- 25:03most were inclined to believe he had run
- 25:05away and he would return at some point
- 25:08soon this theory was given credence by
- 25:11the fact that the day after he vanished
- 25:13he had a court hearing to decide if he
- 25:15would be sent to a rehabilitation center
- 25:18but still after not returning for longer
- 25:21than normal
- 25:22and with his mother's pleading an
- 25:24investigation to find nicholas
- 25:26was finally started for months there was
- 25:30no sign of him
- 25:31the only clue was three months after
- 25:33nicholas's disappearance when jason
- 25:35called the police to say that he could
- 25:37hear his younger brother
- 25:39breaking into their garage yet when
- 25:41police arrived
- 25:43there was no evidence of forced entry
- 25:45nor
- 25:46any sign of nicholas but they couldn't
- 25:48understand
- 25:49why jason would lie about such a thing
- 25:52after years past the barclay family
- 25:55started to come to terms with the fact
- 25:57that they may never see nicholas again
- 26:00that is until this case took a
- 26:02surprising and unusual turn
- 26:06few missing children's cases end in the
- 26:08child being found
- 26:10and yet in 1997 three years after he
- 26:14went missing
- 26:15the barclay family was told that
- 26:17nicholas had been found alive
- 26:19and safe despite this joyous news
- 26:23there was something rather strange about
- 26:25the phone call
- 26:26nicholas was said to have been found in
- 26:28lenati spain
- 26:30after having been taken by a child
- 26:32trafficking ring
- 26:33that had moved him all the way to europe
- 26:36after years of being held captive
- 26:38nicholas had managed to escape
- 26:41the police told the barclays that
- 26:43nicholas had been forced to speak
- 26:45only french for the three years he was
- 26:47gone
- 26:48and had been hurt during his time away
- 26:50from them kerry
- 26:52nicholas's older sister flew to spain to
- 26:55identify and retrieve
- 26:56her missing brother things did not go as
- 26:59planned though
- 27:00as nicholas appeared afraid of his
- 27:02sister especially the fact that she
- 27:05might not recognize him
- 27:06and force him to remain in spain when he
- 27:10finally allowed carrie to come and see
- 27:12him
- 27:12he kept a baseball hat and sunglasses on
- 27:15yet carrie said that she knew he was her
- 27:18brother
- 27:19the two spent some time together to get
- 27:21reacquainted
- 27:23as nicholas claimed that he had very
- 27:25little recollection of his life
- 27:27before being taken as his mind had
- 27:29blocked it out
- 27:30as an emotional response when carrie
- 27:33showed him family photos
- 27:35nicholas appeared to remember certain
- 27:37things and people
- 27:38such as asking her if grandpa was still
- 27:41in
- 27:43before he was allowed to return home
- 27:44with carrie though
- 27:46nicholas had to pass a test where the
- 27:48police showed him family photos that
- 27:50carrie hadn't gone over with him
- 27:52and he had to correctly identify the
- 27:54people in them
- 27:56nicholas only made one small mistake
- 27:59and so he was allowed to return home to
- 28:01texas with carrie
- 28:04even though the barclays were delighted
- 28:06to finally have nicholas back
- 28:08there were a few things that they
- 28:10couldn't ignore
- 28:11one being the most obvious which was the
- 28:14fact that their brother had been blonde
- 28:16with blue eyes
- 28:17when he was taken but the boy who came
- 28:19back from spain
- 28:21had dark hair and brown eyes
- 28:24nicholas had an extraordinary
- 28:25explanation for his change in appearance
- 28:28he said that to keep his identity a
- 28:30secret the people who had taken him had
- 28:33performed experiments to change his hair
- 28:35and eye color
- 28:37so that no one would recognize him as
- 28:39nicholas
- 28:40he also spoke with a heavy french accent
- 28:43but this was explained away with his
- 28:45story of being forced to only speak
- 28:47french for the three years
- 28:50the family was so relieved to finally
- 28:52have nicholas home
- 28:53that they actively ignored some of the
- 28:55things authorities raised concerns about
- 28:58and even told investigators to close the
- 29:01case
- 29:02a film crew heard about the amazing
- 29:04story and asked to follow the barclays
- 29:06around
- 29:07to document how nicholas was adjusting
- 29:10to returning to his family
- 29:12they agreed and that was when everything
- 29:15started to fall apart
- 29:17a local private detective was working
- 29:19with the crew
- 29:20and became increasingly suspicious of
- 29:22the french-speaking
- 29:23dark-haired nicholas he began his own
- 29:26investigation
- 29:27and took a picture of nicholas's ears to
- 29:29compare to earlier photos
- 29:32he found that they didn't match and his
- 29:35ears don't age or
- 29:36change he took his concerns to the
- 29:38authorities
- 29:40by february of 1998 after nicholas was
- 29:43back living with the barclays for five
- 29:46months
- 29:46the fbi became involved when they
- 29:49obtained a court order to investigate
- 29:51when nicholas's fingerprints and dna
- 29:54were taken
- 29:54it was determined that the man the
- 29:56barclays believed to be their nicholas
- 29:59was actually a 23 year old frenchman
- 30:02named frederic pierre bourdon frederik
- 30:06was a notorious con artist with over 500
- 30:09different identities
- 30:10and the nickname the chameleon despite
- 30:14this shocking revelation
- 30:15the barclays refused to believe that
- 30:18frederick wasn't nicholas
- 30:20even when in court frederick admitted to
- 30:22being an imposter
- 30:24and pleaded guilty to passport fraud and
- 30:26perjury
- 30:28he was imprisoned for six years
- 30:31questions swirled around this revelation
- 30:34where was the real nicholas how had the
- 30:37barclays been fooled
- 30:39and why did frederik do it
- 30:42though this case is utterly shocking the
- 30:44imposter
- 30:45is not the only twist investigators were
- 30:49concerned by the barclays behavior
- 30:51during the entire incident
- 30:53and their willful acceptance of frederik
- 30:56frederique himself later weighed into
- 30:58the controversy
- 30:59saying that even he couldn't believe
- 31:01that the barclays accepted him so easily
- 31:04rousing even more suspicion of the
- 31:06family
- 31:08frederick even claimed that the barclays
- 31:10knew he wasn't nicholas
- 31:12but that they had all pretended and
- 31:13played along with his scheme
- 31:16and he couldn't understand why he
- 31:19reported that when he met carrie
- 31:21she had fed him knowledge about the
- 31:22family telling him who
- 31:24everyone was and what to remember
- 31:28she had allegedly helped him pass the
- 31:30police's test
- 31:31before being allowed to go to the u.s
- 31:34frederick also said that jason had never
- 31:36accepted him
- 31:37nor pretended to in fact all he had said
- 31:40to frederik upon meeting him was
- 31:43good luck the phone call jason had made
- 31:46three months after nicholas disappeared
- 31:48suddenly became a clue as police said
- 31:51that those types of calls aren't unusual
- 31:54when someone has been murdered
- 31:56as the murderer often attempts to make
- 31:58it seem like the victim may still
- 32:00be alive after killing them
- 32:03and this is exactly what the private
- 32:05investigator in frederick believe
- 32:07happened
- 32:08he believes that the family accepted him
- 32:10so willingly
- 32:11because they had killed nicholas or
- 32:13jason had
- 32:15and were more than happy to cover it up
- 32:17by claiming
- 32:18he was the real nicholas before jason
- 32:21could be investigated
- 32:23he died from a drug overdose it is
- 32:26reported that he had long been battling
- 32:28a cocaine addiction no other evidence
- 32:31appeared
- 32:32and the case went cold frederick
- 32:34finished his jail sentence
- 32:36and went on continuing to steal
- 32:38identities across europe
- 32:41nicholas has still never been found
- 32:44but his story has inspired the popular
- 32:46netflix documentary
- 32:48the imposter
