- 0:00This is a sample lesson of a TE Form
- 0:02Master Course at Smile Nihongo Academy.
- 0:05Learn more about the course at Smile
- 0:09Nihongo.com/TE. As we discussed in the
- 0:15very first lesson of this course, one
- 0:18function of the TE form is to list
- 0:21multiple actions in one sentence.
- 0:24For instance, let's say you want to say
- 0:26something like this. I wake up at 6, do
- 0:31yoga, eat breakfast and go to work. You
- 0:37have four verbs in this sentence.
- 0:39Wake up, do, eat, and go. Or, you may want to
- 0:46say something like this. My wife wakes up
- 0:49at 6, does yoga, eats breakfast and goes to
- 0:55work. Again you have four verbs in one
- 0:59sentence here. To say these sentences in
- 1:03Japanese you have to say the first three
- 1:06verbs in TE form and the one at the end
- 1:09of the sentence in MASU form. In this
- 1:13lesson, I'm going to walk you through how
- 1:15to use TE forms to construct
- 1:17sentences with multiple verbs.
- 1:24Let's begin with sentences with two verbs.
- 1:28I often go to Starbucks and buy coffee.
- 1:33Here we have two verbs. Go and buy. And
- 1:37the first verb go has to be in the TE form.
- 1:41Let's finish the first part of the
- 1:44sentence. By the way I'm not going to
- 1:48state the subject I, watashi wa, in the
- 1:51sentence since in Japanese the subject I
- 1:54is often dropped and, in fact, it sounds
- 1:58more natural that way without, watashi wa,
- 2:01in the sentence.
- 2:03Okay the first part. I often go to
- 2:07Starbucks,
- 2:09よく yoku often, スタバに sutaba ni to Starbucks, いって itte
- 2:18go and. Please know that the verb いって itte
- 2:24here means "go and" in English. By putting
- 2:29the verb in the TE form, you are
- 2:32indicating that a sentence doesn't end
- 2:34there.
- 2:35It's still going to continue so you
- 2:38don't have to use the word "and" in the
- 2:40sentence here. Instead you simply use the
- 2:44TE form of the verb.
- 2:47Let's finish the second part of the
- 2:50sentence. Buy coffee コーヒーを Koohii o かいます kaimasu.
- 2:57Very good. Now the sentence is complete.
- 3:00I often go to Starbucks and buy coffee is
- 3:05yoku Staba ni itte, koohii o kaimasu. Yoku
- 3:13Staba ni itte, koohii o kaimasu.
- 3:19By the way, this is a Japanese comma. You
- 3:25don't have to use it all the time but
- 3:27just so you know many people tend to use
- 3:30it after each TE form especially when
- 3:33they're writing an essay, official
- 3:36document, or formal letter. OK, now let's
- 3:44change the tense of the sentence. This
- 3:47time we want to say the sentence in the
- 3:49past tense like this. Yesterday I went to
- 3:54Starbucks and bought coffee. How do we do
- 3:59that?
- 4:02Previously you learned that TE form
- 4:05doesn't have any tense. It's completely
- 4:09neutral and influenced by the verb at
- 4:11the end of the sentence, so that means we
- 4:16only need to change the ending verb
- 4:18かいます kaimasu to the past tense. Let's do it.
- 4:23きのう Kinoo, yesterday, スタバに Sutaba ni, to Starbucks
- 4:30いって itte, went and, コーヒーを koohii o coffee, かいました kaimashita bought.
- 4:40That's it
- 4:43Yesterday I went to Starbucks and bought
- 4:46coffee in Japanese is きのう Kinoo スタバに Sutaba ni いって itte,
- 4:53コーヒーを koohii o かいました kaimashita.
- 4:57きのうスタバにいって、コーヒーをかいました。Kinoo Sutaba ni itte, koohii o kaimashita.
- 5:04Again what matters here is the ending.
- 5:07The ending verb decides the tense of
- 5:11the entire sentence, so you don't change
- 5:14the TE form for the past tense or any
- 5:17tense. Okay let's continue with the
- 5:24lesson. Now let's say we want to add one
- 5:28more action to the sentence after buy
- 5:30coffee like this. I often go to Starbucks
- 5:35buy coffee and take a walk. Now we have
- 5:42three verbs in the sentence and the
- 5:45action "buy coffee" no longer ends the
- 5:48sentence. So that means we need to
- 5:51convert かいます kaimasu into the TE form, which is
- 5:55かって katte, かって katte, and then end the sentence with
- 6:02"take a walk." さんぽします sanpo shimasu.
- 6:07Now the sentence is complete.
- 6:12I often go to Starbucks, buy coffee and
- 6:16take a walk in Japanese is よく yoku スタバに Sutaba ni いって itte, コーヒーをかって koohii o katte, さんぽします sanpo shimasu.
- 6:30よく Yoku スタバに Sutaba ni いって itte, コーヒーを koohii o かって katte, さんぽします sanpo shimasu.
- 6:37And of course if you want to say the
- 6:40sentence in the past tense you only need
- 6:43to change the ending verb. Yesterday I
- 6:47went to Starbucks bought coffee and took
- 6:51a walk.
- 6:54きのう kinoo スタバに Sutaba ni いって itte, コーヒーを koohii o かって katte,
- 7:01さんぽしました Sanpo shimashita. From here in the course I'll
- 7:08be teaching you how to change the Speech
- 7:11style from Formal to Informal speech

- 7:16your sentences. You will also have some

- 7:22and fluency in Japanese.
