  1. 0:00Motherboard. The motherboard is a wide
  2. 0:02and flat circuit board and it's the main
  3. 0:04component of the computer where every
  4. 0:06other component gets connected. Its goal
  5. 0:08is to make the different parts of the
  6. 0:09computer communicate with each other.
  7. 0:11It's relatively cheap if compared
  8. 0:13against other components. Even though
  9. 0:14it's arguably the most important one, it
  10. 0:16can be considered the heart of the
  11. 0:18computer. CPU. The CPU, also known as
  12. 0:22the central processing unit or
  13. 0:23processor, is the brain of the computer.
  14. 0:25And although it usually has very low
  15. 0:27data storage, it's really good at using
  16. 0:29it for things like complex mathematical
  17. 0:31operations, [music] reading through
  18. 0:32massive lists, etc. It's where most of
  19. 0:35the programs are run from and basically
  20. 0:37everything that happens in a computer
  21. 0:38goes through the CPU at some point. Hard
  22. 0:41drive. It's where all of your data is
  23. 0:43stored. So when the computer says you're
  24. 0:45running low on space, it means that your
  25. 0:47hard drive is almost full. Hard drives
  26. 0:49are good at storing a lot of data, but
  27. 0:51they're slow at accessing it since most
  28. 0:53of them are made up of spinning discs
  29. 0:55and share their data through a small
  30. 0:56wire. For this reason, it isn't always
  31. 0:59going to be able to give the needed
  32. 1:00information to the CPU. To avoid this
  33. 1:02problem, we use the RAM. RAM. The RAM
  34. 1:05stores data just like the hard drive,
  35. 1:07but with much less space available. The
  36. 1:09good thing about the RAM is how fast it
  37. 1:11can access information, making it useful
  38. 1:14to quickly communicate to the CPU the
  39. 1:16information that would take too long for
  40. 1:18the hard drive to access. Every time you
  41. 1:20see a loading screen in a video game,
  42. 1:22it's because the CPU is taking the
  43. 1:24needed data from the hard drive to the
  44. 1:25RAM, so it can access it much more
  45. 1:27quickly when you're playing. The RAM is
  46. 1:29connected through a long, thin stick
  47. 1:31instead of a small wire like the hard
  48. 1:32drive. One thing to remember is that you
  49. 1:34can't permanently store data on the RAM.
  50. 1:36It's a short memory system, and every
  51. 1:38time you turn off your computer, the
  52. 1:40data on it gets wiped. SSD. The
  53. 1:43solidstate drive has the same goal as
  54. 1:45the hard drive, but it's faster and more
  55. 1:47durable. It's a newer technology, and in
  56. 1:49some computers, it's used with hard
  57. 1:51drives or completely alone. It's also
  58. 1:53usually more expensive. Graphics card.
  59. 1:55To create 3D worlds from complex
  60. 1:58calculations, the computer has to do a
  61. 2:00massive amount of work. But a really
  62. 2:01difficult part comes in when it's time
  63. 2:03to show those worlds on your screen.
  64. 2:05This is where the graphics card comes
  65. 2:06in, which is basically an entire
  66. 2:08standalone computer dedicated only to
  67. 2:10showing the right things on your screen,
  68. 2:12deciding which pixels need to light up
  69. 2:14and in what color. Some CPUs already
  70. 2:16come with an integrated graphics card,
  71. 2:18but they're usually less powerful than a
  72. 2:20normal single graphics card. Power
  73. 2:22supply. As the name suggests, this
  74. 2:24component takes the electricity from an
  75. 2:26outlet and puts it into the computer,
  76. 2:28making it possible to use it. It has to
  77. 2:30be powerful enough for your other
  78. 2:31components. Case. A case is simply a box
  79. 2:34of plastic where every part goes. The
  80. 2:36most popular formats are mini tower,
  81. 2:39midtower, and full tower depending on
  82. 2:41the size they have. The choice of the
  83. 2:42case should come after having decided
  84. 2:44the sizes of the other components to
  85. 2:46make sure that everything fits in it.
  86. 2:48Cooling system. Some areas of the
  87. 2:50computer, like the CPU and graphics
  88. 2:52card, generate a lot of heat and would
  89. 2:55fry every other component and themselves
  90. 2:57if it weren't for a cooling system. A
  91. 2:59computer can have air cooling or liquid
  92. 3:00cooling, each with its own pros and
  93. 3:02cons. Wireless card. If your computer
  94. 3:05supports Wi-Fi, which gives you access
  95. 3:07to the internet without using Ethernet
  96. 3:09cables, it has a wireless
