  25. 0:49silent this will be another Forgotten
  26. 0:51Realms lore video discussing candlekeep
  27. 0:53which is kind of like the Great Library
  28. 0:56of Alexandria - the fire that destroyed
  29. 0:58it actually what what the despite the
  30. 1:03widespread modern belief that the
  31. 1:05Library of Alexandria was burned and
  32. 1:06destroyed the library actually declined
  33. 1:09gradually over the course of several
  34. 1:11centuries well there you go
  35. 1:14I learned something today I don't know
  36. 1:16this for a fact but I believe candlekeep
  37. 1:18was heavily inspired by the Great
  38. 1:20Library of Alexandria a few parallels
  39. 1:23let's discuss candlekeep isn't really
  40. 1:25part of a city it's kind of its own
  41. 1:27thing located along the sword coast it
  42. 1:29is a towered library fortress that
  43. 1:32overlooks the sea of swords filled with
  44. 1:34various books and Scrolls of knowledge
  45. 1:36it is considered the greatest collection
  46. 1:37of writings in faerûn the keepers of
  47. 1:39candlekeep
  48. 1:40are there to preserve knowledge they
  49. 1:42have one absolute rule that they follow
  50. 1:44those who destroy knowledge with ink
  51. 1:47fire or sword are themselves destroyed
  52. 1:50candlekeep was founded in negative 200
  53. 1:52dr as a single tower it is unclear if it
  54. 1:55started out as a library and many
  55. 1:58believe it was founded later as the
  56. 1:59citadel of allah window who was a seer
  57. 2:02ala window in fact did not found
  58. 2:04candlekeep but rather arrived at it in
  59. 2:0675 dr to study and donate various
  60. 2:09writings it was well before ala endo
  61. 2:11came that candlekeep had all
  62. 2:13established itself as a great library
  63. 2:15candlekeep was built upon volcanic rock
  64. 2:18with catacombs beneath the fortress now
  65. 2:21why do I mention ala Wando well he
  66. 2:24became a famous resident of candlekeep
  67. 2:26because of his visions of the future
  68. 2:28a Nostradamus of his time he wrote nine
  69. 2:30volumes concerning the fate of the
  70. 2:32realms ala endo was born in negative 22
  71. 2:35dr and died in 76 dr he was the son of a
  72. 2:38minor trader from kalam shan and at the
  73. 2:40age of 20 started having prophecies
  74. 2:42concerning faerun and he started writing
  75. 2:45them down upon seeing a vision of his
  76. 2:47own impending death he journeyed to
  77. 2:49candlekeep to donate his prophecies he
  78. 2:52arrived in 75 dr as I mentioned and died
  79. 2:54a year later from a plague his
  80. 2:56prophecies were a range of well
  81. 2:57organized and detailed thoughts -
  82. 2:59scribbled notes and margins the monks
  83. 3:02who lived in candlekeep were amazed at
  84. 3:04the accuracy of his predictions that in
  85. 3:0682 dr they detailed the ones that had
  86. 3:09not occurred yet a group of thirty monks
  87. 3:11have committed every prophecy to memory
  88. 3:13and they take part in a never-ending
  89. 3:15chant of the unfulfilled prophecies
  90. 3:17which has gone uninterrupted to the
  91. 3:20present day when a prophecy does come
  92. 3:22true they remove it from the chant and
  93. 3:24continue a lagoon those prophecies must
  94. 3:27be interpreted but when interpreted
  95. 3:29correctly they are astoundingly accurate
  96. 3:31however hindsight probably aids in their
  97. 3:35interpretation more than anything
  98. 3:36possibly his most famous prophecy is in
  99. 3:39relation to the end of the world
  100. 3:41scholars believe the end of faerûn will
  101. 3:43occur in 2163 dr and many in larger
  102. 3:47cities will recognize the prophecy it's
  103. 3:49just well known a common phrase horn of
  104. 3:52doom has become an expression for a loud
  105. 3:55noise that causes fear when night all is
  106. 3:58almost at a close there from the gate
  107. 4:00wall shall descend a serpent to blow a
  108. 4:03horn of doom at the graveyard kingdom of
  109. 4:06man if the star of storms is its
  110. 4:09brightest when the dulcet ballad is
  111. 4:12played soundest ground shall be torn
  112. 4:14asunder the tapestry forever frayed but
  113. 4:18if the raging King has failed to keep
  114. 4:21his five retainers true tomorrow the
  115. 4:24Blessed Sun will rise
  116. 4:26and no chaos shall ill ensue entry into
  117. 4:31candlekeep is tricky the monks are there
  118. 4:33to preserve and protect history lore and
  119. 4:36knowledge so not everyone is allowed
  120. 4:38entry these monks are called the avowed
  121. 4:40although friendly they are suspicious of
  122. 4:43all visitors
  123. 4:44most of the avout have no magical powers
  124. 4:46but a handful of them are lower-level
  125. 4:48wizards or clerics following deities of
  126. 4:51knowledge
  127. 4:52aughh messiahs denier or gand many of
  128. 4:54the monks of candlekeep claim to be
  129. 4:56nondenominational instead serving the
  130. 4:58pursuit and protection of knowledge
  131. 5:00there are plenty of forbidden magics and
  132. 5:02dark rituals held within the walls of
  133. 5:04candle keeper the trick is finding them
  134. 5:06for every piece of forbidden knowledge
  135. 5:08there are hundreds of recipes or
  136. 5:11fictional novels in order to gain
  137. 5:12entrance to candle keep you must have a
  138. 5:15seal of a recognised powerful mage this
  139. 5:17mage acts like a sponsor so to speak and
  140. 5:20if the visitor misbehaves it comes back
  141. 5:22to that mage thus invitations are given
  142. 5:25out to only the trustworthy also a
  143. 5:28donation to the library is required from
  144. 5:30second edition D&D a donation of a book
  145. 5:33no less than 10,000 gold pieces and
  146. 5:35value later lore suggests a missing book
  147. 5:37from the library is required this fits
  148. 5:39with the current law of candlekeep but
  149. 5:42the book presented doesn't necessarily
  150. 5:43need to be expensive or rare just a bit
  151. 5:46of knowledge that isn't in the
  152. 5:47repository of candle keep the gates of
  153. 5:49Campbell keep are three times the height
  154. 5:51of a human and built from a large
  155. 5:53strange black metal that repels
  156. 5:55lightning and is immune to magical
  157. 5:57divinations the latter protects all of
  158. 5:59candlekeep from scrying wizards once
  159. 6:01admitted visitors are known as seekers
  160. 6:04and are allowed a maximum of one ten day
  161. 6:07stay within the fortress candlekeep
  162. 6:08also offers services for those willing
  163. 6:10to pay copying non-magical or books so a
  164. 6:13seeker can keep it costs about a hundred
  165. 6:15gold pieces but could depend on the size
  166. 6:17of the tome magical spell books cost
  167. 6:20more and might be priced at thousands of
  168. 6:22gold pieces simple spells can cost about
  169. 6:25twenty five gold pieces with more
  170. 6:27complex spells being a hundred and fifty
  171. 6:29gold pieces or higher the sale of books
  172. 6:31is largely Kindle keeps the main source
  173. 6:33of income also there's a ghost dragon
  174. 6:36that is magically bound to candlekeep
  175. 6:37protecting
  176. 6:38the labyrinth of complex caverns beneath
  177. 6:40the fortress Mirim is her name and she
  178. 6:42has her own interesting story for
