  1. 0:38You know, last night Sofia and I are
  2. 0:39talking and we're kind of going in the
  3. 0:41end of this and we're like,
  4. 0:43you know, we're putting a lot of trust
  5. 0:45in these guys. They could make us look
  6. 0:47stupid. Like we've been
  7. 0:51blindsided by everything the past two
  8. 0:53years. It's been a lot to figure out who
  9. 0:56can we trust really.
  10. 0:58It's a real concern and you know,
  11. 1:01I recognize it like you have contempt
  12. 1:04for what I believe. Like in terms of my
  13. 1:07political viewpoints. Like you don't I
  14. 1:10think in any other situation we you
  15. 1:14probably would be protesting my office.
  16. 1:16You're just so far left. First of all,
  17. 1:18that's kind of mean. Yeah, it is. I
  18. 1:19know.
  19. 1:20>> That's kind of mean that you would think
  20. 1:21I would have contempt for your views.
  21. 1:22Yeah.
  22. 1:23>> Why would you think that?
  23. 1:23>> Do you have contempt for my views,
  24. 1:25Steve?
  25. 1:34And in the key House races, Republican
  26. 1:36Adam [music] Kinzinger cruised in that
  27. 1:3811th District Republican primary. He
  28. 1:40grabbed 64% [music] of the vote.
  29. 1:42>> The 32-year-old Air Force pilot also
  30. 1:44received strong support from the Tea
  31. 1:46Party in his landslide win. That Okay,
  32. 1:48that's a fair question. But what you're
  33. 1:49essentially asking me is why would I
  34. 1:51want to make a movie about you, a guy
  35. 1:52whose political views I oppose?
  36. 1:54Adam Kinzinger
  37. 1:56>> he's [music] a real up-and-coming star.
  38. 1:58Yes, Adam.
  39. 1:59>> Mr. President, thank you. And just from
  40. 2:00the House perspective, I want to say uh
  41. 2:02Adam is still currently serving guard
  42. 2:04member. You're my commander-in-chief.
  43. 2:06He's doing a great job as secretary.
  44. 2:07>> Great job. He is doing a great [music]
  45. 2:09job. Thank you, Adam. Very much
  46. 2:10appreciate it. Handsome guy. I mean,
  47. 2:12normally I want nothing to do with you.
  48. 2:14You voted with the president 93% of the
  49. 2:16time. So, that
  50. 2:18seems like you're No, it's all fun. I'm
  51. 2:20just curious to see And then
  52. 2:22lo and behold
  53. 2:24Frankly, we did win this election.
  54. 2:27>> [cheering]
  55. 2:28>> When the president denies the election
  56. 2:30result, all of a sudden there's this guy
  57. 2:31from my home state, you, who stands up
  58. 2:34and says, "Fuck that."
  59. 2:36The truth is that the election was not
  60. 2:37stolen.
  61. 2:39And it's important for our party to take
  62. 2:41inventory of that and go out and win the
  63. 2:43next election
  64. 2:44instead of continuing the big lie.
  65. 2:47And then after the president literally
  66. 2:48tries to overthrow the government
  67. 2:50to the Capitol you were the first
  68. 2:52legislator, you were the first one of
  69. 2:54either party to invoke the 25th
  70. 2:56Amendment and say,
  71. 2:57"This guy's a maniac and needs to
  72. 2:58[music] be forcibly removed from
  73. 3:00office."
  74. 3:01All indications are that the president
  75. 3:02has become unmoored, not just from his
  76. 3:05duty
  77. 3:06or even his oath, but from reality
  78. 3:08itself. Then you voted for impeachment.
  79. 3:10How does it feel to be a pariah within
  80. 3:12your own party? So, yeah, that's why I
  81. 3:14wanted to make this movie. But I'd be
  82. 3:16lying if I said I wasn't conflicted,
  83. 3:17right? Because to me, a courageous
  84. 3:19Republican is still a Republican.
  85. 3:22I think it's not about a political view.
  86. 3:27It's about
  87. 3:29what it is to turn against
  88. 3:32everything you've ever belonged to
  89. 3:36because of some red line you can't
  90. 3:39cross.
  91. 3:52So, out of all the cinematic visionaries
  92. 3:54who wanted to make this film,
  93. 3:57why did you say yes to me?
  94. 4:02Hot Tub Time Machine is the thing that
  95. 4:03sold me.
  96. 4:06>> [music]
  97. 4:08>> It's a cinematic masterpiece.
  98. 4:11How can such a serious filmmaker like
  99. 4:13Hot Tub Time Machine not make me look
  100. 4:15good?
  101. 4:16Wha- Right.
  102. 4:18That's really good logic.
  103. 4:19>> Thank you.
  104. 4:20So, we've been shooting together for
  105. 4:21over a year.
  106. 4:24Yeah, a lot over a year. Feels like 4
  107. 4:26years.
  108. 4:27And they need and
  109. 4:29in fact
  110. 4:30and that
  111. 4:34through, you know, up the appropriations
  112. 4:36process
  113. 4:36>> real negotiating yet between the two
  114. 4:38chambers Yeah.
  115. 4:40We're happy to take a look. Hello, this
  116. 4:42is Congressman Kinzinger's office. How
  117. 4:43may I help you?
  118. 4:45Okay, welcome to the office.
  119. 4:49And
  120. 4:51so, this is our
  121. 4:53front room. And then in here, this is
  122. 4:56where folks from our legislative team
  123. 4:58sit. Our deputy chief of staff, Mara, is
  124. 5:01out there looking.
  125. 5:03So, you're asking me for the statement
  126. 5:04before I even give out the statement?
  127. 5:10Mara is allowed to type her away but
  128. 5:12when she's being recorded, she's like
  129. 5:14just a little bit louder. You think so?
  130. 5:17You can feel the the emphasis, yeah.
  131. 5:22>> [laughter]
  132. 5:23>> Is that quiet enough for you, Paul? Is
  133. 5:25it too loud?
  134. 5:26So, when I joined the office, I would
  135. 5:28ignore Mara's emails because she was
  136. 5:30mean to me. That's not true. But I would
  137. 5:31always do what she asked. I would just
  138. 5:33never respond. Well, Mara could see
  139. 5:35Paul's computer. So, he'd open an email.
  140. 5:38I would see he saw it, close out of it.
  141. 5:40I was like, well, he clearly ignored me.
  142. 5:41That's quite rude.
  143. 5:44Rule number nine was in response to me
  144. 5:47suggesting that in some circumstances
  145. 5:49tickling would be okay.
  146. 5:52But this is a reminder that under no
  147. 5:54circumstance can you tickle any
  148. 5:55co-workers.
  149. 5:58Um
  150. 6:00How's this going?
  151. 6:02Good. It's actually good. Yeah. Yeah.
  152. 6:04They're not on my nerves yet or
  153. 6:05anything. That's good.
  154. 6:07>> Yeah. Any time.
  155. 6:09It's funny though because at the
  156. 6:10beginning I don't think your chief of
  157. 6:11staff was thrilled to see me in your
  158. 6:12office.
  159. 6:13You know, I think in Austin's
  160. 6:14perspective, anytime there's a camera
  161. 6:17around you're on defense. It's very
  162. 6:18difficult not not filming. I mean you
  163. 6:20you made it very clear from the very
  164. 6:21beginning that you didn't agree with my
  165. 6:23politics. You called yourself basically
  166. 6:25a communist. You outed yourself out.
  167. 6:27>> Progressive, but sure. All right.
  168. 6:29Thanks.
  169. 6:31You know, when we were filming that
  170. 6:32first day, keep in mind the mindset to
  171. 6:34that point, I was still considering
  172. 6:36running for governor or Senate.
  173. 6:38The decisions I made to speak out
  174. 6:40against Trump or even vote for
  175. 6:41impeachment, I never really had a debate
  176. 6:45on that in my own mind. I knew I had to
  177. 6:47do it.
  178. 6:48But when I voted that way,
  179. 6:50naively,
  180. 6:51I thought there's no way people aren't
  181. 6:53going to wake up from this.
  182. 6:56I remember the day after January 6th,
  183. 6:59you know, everybody was kind of waking
  184. 7:00up at that point. The president bears
  185. 7:02responsibility for Wednesday's attack on
  186. 7:05Congress by mob rioters.
  187. 7:07He should have immediately denounced the
  188. 7:09mob when he saw what was unfolding.
  189. 7:12These facts require immediate action.
  190. 7:15For President Trump.
  191. 7:16>> President Trump is practically
  192. 7:18and morally responsible
  193. 7:21for provoking the events
  194. 7:24of the day.
  195. 7:26No question about it.
  196. 7:28I called it it was like Saturday morning
  197. 7:31when you had a giant party at your house
  198. 7:33Friday night and now you got chickens
  199. 7:35flying around. You have a bad headache,
  200. 7:37you know, you're only wearing a shirt
  201. 7:39and you're like, what did we do last
  202. 7:40night? That's where I thought the party
  203. 7:42was. So you're
  204. 7:45you're thinking even at that moment was
  205. 7:47the insurrection and the attempt to
  206. 7:48overthrow the government and a and a
  207. 7:50coup d'état that included 140
  208. 7:52Republicans voting to not certify the
  209. 7:55election. You thought that just might
  210. 7:56have been a crazy bender and that they
  211. 7:58were going to wake up and get their [ __ ]
  212. 8:00together.
  213. 8:01>> You wake up, you're going to deal with
  214. 8:02the hangover,
  215. 8:04and you're going to gut it out and drink
  216. 8:05water, right?
  217. 8:10Donald Trump was a nonentity. Nobody
  218. 8:11even showed up at Andrews when he left.
  219. 8:21But you can always fix a hangover by
  220. 8:23starting to drink again.
  221. 8:26And that's when Kevin McCarthy goes to
  222. 8:28Mar-a-Lago. That changed everything.
  223. 8:31Cuz Donald Trump had been disgraced
  224. 8:33until that moment.
  225. 8:36Kevin McCarthy was the minority leader,
  226. 8:39and Kevin told us,
  227. 8:41"I just happen to be down there in Palm
  228. 8:44Beach,
  229. 8:45and he wanted to meet, and I'm not going
  230. 8:46to say no to a former president."
  231. 8:48[ __ ]
  232. 8:52I knew at that moment what would happen.
  233. 8:56You know, if you didn't know the TV
  234. 8:57footage was a video from January the
  235. 8:596th, you would actually think it was a
  236. 9:01normal tourist visit.
  237. 9:02>> The former president, was he responsible
  238. 9:04for what happened? No, of course not.
  239. 9:06You think about it. If you actually come
  240. 9:07to grips with what's happened,
  241. 9:09that's going to take some soul
  242. 9:10searching. It's much better to just numb
  243. 9:12the pain. It's easier.
  244. 9:14After careful consideration,
  245. 9:17I've made the decision to oppose the
  246. 9:19House Democrats' slanted and unbalanced
  247. 9:21proposal
  248. 9:22for another commission to study the
  249. 9:24events of January the 6th. Just to
  250. 9:27approach you with this analogy,
  251. 9:28>> it seems like you would be a great
  252. 9:29candidate to start Republicans
  253. 9:31Anonymous. Yeah, maybe. You know what I
  254. 9:33mean? Like you could have a you know,
  255. 9:34like, "Hi, my name is Jim Jordan."
  256. 9:36>> then we're just feeding into your little
  257. 9:38left-wing like, "Oh, every every
  258. 9:40Republican is just a Democrat waiting to
  259. 9:42find his wings."
  260. 9:44>> [ __ ]
  261. 9:48I mean, it's a funny analogy, but in
  262. 9:51that moment,
  263. 9:53I felt
  264. 9:55very isolated.
  265. 9:58With great solemnity and sadness,
  266. 10:01uh I'm announcing that the House will be
  267. 10:03establishing an uh
  268. 10:05select committee on the January 6th
  269. 10:08insurrection.
  270. 10:11It is imperative that we establish the
  271. 10:13truth of that day.
  272. 10:17The select committee will investigate
  273. 10:18and report on the facts and the causes
  274. 10:21of the attack, [music] and it will make
  275. 10:22report recommendations uh for the
  276. 10:25prevention of any future attack.
  277. 10:27>> The resolution is adopted. After you
  278. 10:29were the only Republican besides Cheney
  279. 10:31[music] to vote for the creation of a
  280. 10:33select committee, at that point, are you
  281. 10:35just all in? Because you don't know
  282. 10:37you're on the committee yet, right?
  283. 10:38>> No, and I don't want to be on the
  284. 10:39committee. Really? I didn't want to be
  285. 10:41on the committee.
  286. 10:43He was not supposed to be there.
  287. 10:45Adam was not supposed to be in that
  288. 10:48group of people.
  289. 10:50You know, I voted for it cuz it was the
  290. 10:51right thing to do.
  291. 10:53And I start hearing rumors that Nancy
  292. 10:55Pelosi is going to appoint a Republican
  293. 10:56to sit on a Democratic seat. Very
  294. 10:58brilliant of her.
  295. 11:00And I was like, "Please, dear Jesus, not
  296. 11:03me."
  297. 11:04And I remember we had dinner in DC that
  298. 11:07night.
  299. 11:08And I remember we both talked about it
  300. 11:10of like, "Should he do it?" I don't want
  301. 11:12to do it. I don't.
  302. 11:14I also know I can't I can't say no if
  303. 11:17I'm asked.
  304. 11:19And freaking Nancy Pelosi announces it
  305. 11:21before she even calls me, by the way.
  306. 11:23Kind of pissed me off.
  307. 11:24>> Will you be appointing more Republicans
  308. 11:26to the committee like Congressman Adam
  309. 11:27Kinzinger?
  310. 11:28That would be my plan. I wake up Sunday
  311. 11:31morning
  312. 11:32to a missed call from her at like 5:00
  313. 11:34a.m. Like I'm going to be up.
  314. 11:35>> So, when will that be announced?
  315. 11:38Perhaps so, after I speak to
  316. 11:40uh Adam Kinzinger.
  317. 11:43A lot changed out there.
  318. 11:46Illinois's Adam Kinzinger
  319. 11:47>> Adam Kinzinger joins Congresswoman Liz
  320. 11:49Cheney on the nine-member panel, who
  321. 11:51lost her job in Republican House
  322. 11:53leadership for taking a similar stance.
  323. 11:55>> The first committee hearing is set for
  324. 11:56Tuesday, where Capitol Police officers
  325. 11:59will testify about their personal
  326. 12:00experiences. My staff, by the way, is
  327. 12:02telling me like, "You're not going to do
  328. 12:04this, right? This is suicidal."
  329. 12:07And
  330. 12:09and they are right. Action.
  331. 12:13Cut.
  332. 12:14Everybody come up here and re-work.
  333. 12:15>> I was with you the day that the final
  334. 12:17redistricting map comes up. Was that
  335. 12:20when we were out shooting the
  336. 12:20commercial?
  337. 12:27Now, Kinzinger has served six terms in
  338. 12:29Congress, but newly approved
  339. 12:30congressional maps put Congressman Adam
  340. 12:32Kinzinger in the same district as Darin
  341. 12:34LaHood.
  342. 12:35>> That new district voted 60% for
  343. 12:37President Trump, a deep red, pro-Trump
  344. 12:39district.
  345. 12:42They drew me in in a very unfavorable
  346. 12:45district with a kind of crazy MAGA guy,
  347. 12:49and I knew there was no way I could run
  348. 12:50in a primary and win.
  349. 12:52Well, it's just a sensitive I mean,
  350. 12:54we're in a sensitive topic right now,
  351. 12:55and so we don't want information to kind
  352. 12:58of get out that we're not ready to get
  353. 12:59out.
  354. 13:00>> off the record.
  355. 13:01>> Yeah. Like, you know. I got to
  356. 13:06Well, there's no good timing. There's no
  357. 13:08good timing. If if you're not going to
  358. 13:10run, there's not a good time. Yeah.
  359. 13:14If we announce this week,
  360. 13:17you're no longer part of the party, and
  361. 13:18you're no longer
  362. 13:20influential.
  363. 13:21>> Yeah.
  364. 13:24Yeah, and that very bad news came in the
  365. 13:26middle of you doing like a thousand
  366. 13:28takes for a political ad about finding
  367. 13:30common ground.
  368. 13:32Some leaders in Washington have
  369. 13:34forgotten the purpose of democracy. Some
  370. 13:35leaders in Washington. Some leaders in
  371. 13:37Washington. Some leaders in Washington
  372. 13:39have focused
  373. 13:42That was a rough day for you.
  374. 13:52Hey, if I don't see you guys
  375. 13:58Adam Kinzinger, perhaps the most
  376. 14:00high-profile Republican lawmaker in
  377. 14:01Illinois, announced he won't seek
  378. 14:04re-election. He is one of only [music]
  379. 14:0510 Republican House members who voted to
  380. 14:08impeach former President Trump.
  381. 14:11Mr. Trump responded with a quick
  382. 14:13statement taking credit, apparently
  383. 14:15referencing the Republicans that voted
  384. 14:17against him earlier this year, simply
  385. 14:19saying, "Two down, [music]
  386. 14:20eight to go."
  387. 14:23about Friday's podcast.
  388. 14:25We talked about doing
  389. 14:26you explaining your decision. Do you
  390. 14:28still want to do that Friday or do you
  391. 14:30want to
  392. 14:31You can always do it before your
  393. 14:32podcast. Okay. It was great. It worked.
  394. 14:34I don't It worked better than it ever
  395. 14:35has.
  396. 14:38It's It works. Hello, friends. Hello,
  397. 14:40sir. It's amazing like everybody now is
  398. 14:42telling me how much they're sad I'm
  399. 14:44leaving. I'm like, "Why the hell didn't
  400. 14:45you guys say anything prior to this
  401. 14:46moment?" Um
  402. 14:48but uh we still have 14 months and you
  403. 14:50know, I want you guys to know obviously
  404. 14:52I'll help support you in anything you
  405. 14:54want to do in terms of next steps. Love
  406. 14:55to keep you here as long as we can.
  407. 14:58Well, just like talking about
  408. 14:59priorities, is there anything that us as
  409. 15:01a staff and in this office can shift any
  410. 15:03focus to or things that you want to
  411. 15:05accomplish here in the next 14 months? I
  412. 15:07think that you know, if we can leave
  413. 15:09here with a bit of a legacy on democracy
  414. 15:11preservation, like the history books
  415. 15:13will be kind.
  416. 15:14You know, it's a worthy fight
  417. 15:16but I think it's it's a battle that we
  418. 15:18have to have a bigger we have to have a
  419. 15:19bigger forum for it.
  420. 15:36Well, thank you everybody. Welcome back
  421. 15:38to uh Country First podcast. And it's
  422. 15:40been a heck of a year.
  423. 15:46One of the things I really want to talk
  424. 15:48about to in the season here is just why
  425. 15:50did I make the decision not to run
  426. 15:51again?
  427. 15:54After the 6th, I thought that people
  428. 15:55would say
  429. 15:56you know, we're done with this. This is
  430. 15:58getting ridiculous. And and and what's
  431. 16:00been worrisome to me as much as anything
  432. 16:02is just watching that that's not
  433. 16:04happening.
  434. 16:05I'm not ashamed of the fact that I'm a
  435. 16:07conservative Republican.
  436. 16:09Now, I haven't been the one that's
  437. 16:10changed. The Republican Party has
  438. 16:13changed.
  439. 16:20But as I look at moving on to the next
  440. 16:22chapter, it is not the end of the story.
  441. 16:24I think it's the beginning of a great
  442. 16:26story.
  443. 16:29When people look back and read the
  444. 16:31history books, the January 6th Committee
  445. 16:34is going to be noted in there as the
  446. 16:36movement that changed the trajectory of
  447. 16:38politics and saved this country and
  448. 16:40saved self-governance.
  449. 16:42We refuse to be the first generation to
  450. 16:44leave our kids a country worse off than
  451. 16:46the one we inherited.
  452. 16:50God bless you all and remember to keep
  453. 16:52putting country first.
  454. 17:00Nice. Boom, done.
  455. 17:03It's crazy how I think the baby
  456. 17:06recognizes your voice. Really? Does he
  457. 17:08like, "Yo."
  458. 17:09He wouldn't stop kicking.
  459. 17:18You know, look, it's fine to make the
  460. 17:20decision to like sacrifice everything,
  461. 17:22but if it's for no purpose, that makes
  462. 17:24it pointless, right?
  463. 17:25>> But I think the stakes of failure for
  464. 17:28you, you were hiding you were hiding
  465. 17:30from this film.
  466. 17:32Yeah, I was probably hiding it from
  467. 17:33myself, too.
  468. 17:34I don't think that's something I could
  469. 17:36think about or come to grips with
  470. 17:37because there was so much at stake both
  471. 17:39for me
  472. 17:40in terms of that sacrifice, but also,
  473. 17:43you know, for the country and the party
  474. 17:44that I still at that time, you know,
  475. 17:47liked.
  476. 17:53You know, some Republicans have been
  477. 17:54saying that the G-
  478. 17:57the GOP should play ball on this
  479. 17:59committee. You could You could get the
  480. 18:00three.
  481. 18:01>> Who was that? Adam and Liz? Well, aren't
  482. 18:04they kind of like Pelosi Republicans?
  483. 18:06Kevin McCarthy is technically my
  484. 18:07Republican leader. And to call, you
  485. 18:10know, members of Congress by childish
  486. 18:12names like Donald Trump used to do, I
  487. 18:14guess this is just uh kind of par for
  488. 18:16the course. Honestly, I'm less mad at
  489. 18:18Donald Trump than I am at Kevin
  490. 18:20McCarthy. So, Trump I'm mad at. Let's
  491. 18:22not I don't want to gloss that over,
  492. 18:24right? He's the reason all this
  493. 18:26happened.
  494. 18:27Um
  495. 18:28but he's just nuts, right? It's not like
  496. 18:31That's not an excuse, but it's like it's
  497. 18:32not a surprise.
  498. 18:34Kevin McCarthy is the surprise. I mean,
  499. 18:37look, McCarthy and I were pretty close.
  500. 18:40I met him early in like 2009 before I
  501. 18:42was elected. And he was invited us to
  502. 18:45dinners all the time. He's a great
  503. 18:46politician.
  504. 18:48I mean, the guy made it to the number
  505. 18:50three
  506. 18:51position in the House Republicans in 6
  507. 18:53years.
  508. 18:56And Kevin could be a very charming guy.
  509. 18:59Like I could see why they were friends.
  510. 19:03And I remember when we got engaged,
  511. 19:05Kevin offered to
  512. 19:10officiate the wedding.
  513. 19:12What? Yeah.
  514. 19:18And of course,
  515. 19:20after the election day, it was all
  516. 19:21different. And President Trump won this
  517. 19:23election. So, everyone who's listening,
  518. 19:25do not be quiet. Do not be Do not be
  519. 19:28silent about this. We cannot allow this
  520. 19:31to happen before our very eyes. We need
  521. 19:32to unite together.
  522. 19:36On January 1st, the Republican
  523. 19:38conference big phone call, all about
  524. 19:41certifying the election.
  525. 19:44Welcome to the conference calling
  526. 19:45center.
  527. 19:45>> Kevin said, "I will be voting against
  528. 19:48certification." Which actually shocked
  529. 19:50me.
  530. 19:51Because even to that point, I'm like,
  531. 19:53"Well, Kevin McCarthy knows the right
  532. 19:55thing to do."
  533. 19:56So, I was the first caller in the queue
  534. 19:58to go. Your line is open. And I go,
  535. 20:00"Kevin,
  536. 20:01you have convinced these people
  537. 20:04that are trusting us.
  538. 20:05You've convinced them that the election
  539. 20:07was stolen. There's going to be
  540. 20:08violence. Like, you have to tell people,
  541. 20:11like, this is on you."
  542. 20:12And he just said, "Okay, Adam. Operator,
  543. 20:15next question.
  544. 20:19That phone call was the last time I ever
  545. 20:20exchanged a word with him.
  546. 20:23Call full capital lottery. CALL FULL
  547. 20:25CAPITAL LOTTERY.
  548. 20:31I WAS ELECTROCUTED AGAIN,
  549. 20:34and again, and again,
  550. 20:37with the taser.
  551. 20:39I'm sure I was screaming, but I don't
  552. 20:41think I could even hear my own voice.
  553. 20:45I said as loud as I could manage,
  554. 20:47"I've got kids."
  555. 20:49That first hearing, that was with the
  556. 20:52Capitol Police.
  557. 20:54I'm pregnant at home. I'm crying and
  558. 20:58crying, like, the moment they started
  559. 21:00talking, I just couldn't stop crying.
  560. 21:04It just hit so much.
  561. 21:06>> They've got the gallows set up side this
  562. 21:08Capitol building. It's time to start
  563. 21:09[ __ ] using and pull me back to that
  564. 21:11day.
  565. 21:19So, January 6th, we had agreed that I
  566. 21:22was going to stay home and that his
  567. 21:23staff was not coming in, that it was
  568. 21:25just him.
  569. 21:28So, I was sitting in the living room,
  570. 21:30obviously watching the news, and I'm
  571. 21:31like, "Oh my god, they're they're
  572. 21:33they're heading towards the Capitol.
  573. 21:34They're starting to push the barrier."
  574. 21:39This is now effectively a riot.
  575. 21:4113:49 hours, declaring a riot.
  576. 21:46So,
  577. 21:47I go online and turn on the Statuary
  578. 21:49Hall live footage.
  579. 21:55And the moment like someone walked into
  580. 21:58the frame, that's where
  581. 22:00I guess I freaked out.
  582. 22:08I'm like,
  583. 22:09"They're coming to get everyone."
  584. 22:12>> [cheering]
  585. 22:12>> And yeah, Adam is probably
  586. 22:15a target.
  587. 22:22I was realizing what it meant to be a
  588. 22:24politician's spouse.
  589. 22:28And that the threats are real.
  590. 22:30>> [screaming]
  591. 22:32>> Until then, I had never seen anyone
  592. 22:35physically assault Capitol Police or
  593. 22:37MPD, let alone witness mass assaults
  594. 22:40being perpetrated on law enforcement
  595. 22:43officers.
  596. 22:45So, the first hearing,
  597. 22:48there was so much
  598. 22:50tragedy and sadness and defeat in their
  599. 22:53stories when reality
  600. 22:57I owe them my husband's life.
  601. 23:01And I text Adam, "Remind them they won."
  602. 23:05I yield back, Mr.
  603. 23:06>> That was like a second or two before
  604. 23:10it was his time to give the opening
  605. 23:11speech.
  606. 23:13Thank you to our witnesses.
  607. 23:15Uh I never expected the day to be
  608. 23:17>> [clears throat and cough]
  609. 23:18>> quite as emotional for me as it has
  610. 23:20been.
  611. 23:21I've talked to a number of you and
  612. 23:23gotten to know you.
  613. 23:25I think it's important to tell you right
  614. 23:27now, though.
  615. 23:29You guys may like individually feel a
  616. 23:31little broken.
  617. 23:33You guys all talk about the effects you
  618. 23:35have to deal with and
  619. 23:37you know, you talk about the impact of
  620. 23:38that day.
  621. 23:41But you guys won.
  622. 23:44You guys held them.
  623. 23:48Thank you.
  624. 23:49Thank you.
  625. 23:53Thank you.
  626. 23:54Oh, oh, by the way, this just in, Adam
  627. 23:56Kinzinger has won a best actor award.
  628. 23:58Check it out. You know, you talk about
  629. 24:00the impact of that day.
  630. 24:03But you guys won.
  631. 24:06Did he just bite his lip? You guys held
  632. 24:08them.
  633. 24:10>> [laughter]
  634. 24:11>> You know, democracies
  635. 24:13are not defined He's going for broke. by
  636. 24:16our bad days.
  637. 24:18>> [laughter]
  638. 24:19>> You know what? He needs a bubble bath,
  639. 24:21some red wine, and a bar of chocolate.
  640. 24:25Two reports last night that Congressman
  641. 24:27Adam Kinzinger of Illinois had been seen
  642. 24:30crying again. Members of Congress are
  643. 24:32technically speaking sent to Washington
  644. 24:34to vote and not to weep. Tonight we have
  645. 24:35an update on that. Congressman Kinzinger
  646. 24:37has been spotted crying again, according
  647. 24:39to our sources, in a place where you
  648. 24:41rarely see tears, in Waffle House.
  649. 24:44>> [music]
  650. 24:44>> You're seeing the Waffle House location
  651. 24:46on your screen. If you look closer, you
  652. 24:47will see Adam Kinzinger clearly
  653. 24:49distraught, crying inside a restaurant
  654. 24:52that serves waffles. [music]
  655. 25:03>> Hey you little [ __ ] sucker.
  656. 25:06Are you Liz Cheney's [ __ ] hag?
  657. 25:10You two [ __ ] sucking little [ __ ]
  658. 25:13We're going to get you.
  659. 25:15Coming to your house, son.
  660. 25:19Adam Kinzinger, I'm so glad you're
  661. 25:20leaving cuz you're a piece of [ __ ] and
  662. 25:22there's my [ __ ] message for you. May
  663. 25:25the Lord God Almighty come upon you,
  664. 25:28your health, your family, your home,
  665. 25:32your livelihood. And and I pray
  666. 25:35if it be God's will that you suffer.
  667. 25:43We killed her outside your [ __ ]
  668. 25:44house, you traitor. We're going to line
  669. 25:46you up on a wall and take care of all
  670. 25:48your traitorous asses. I think as the
  671. 25:51hearings ramp up, people are just going
  672. 25:53to continue
  673. 25:55berating our office. You son of a [ __ ]
  674. 25:58you gave 200
  675. 25:59>> I mean, over the course of the last 2
  676. 26:00weeks, obviously his name gets out there
  677. 26:02more and they just call and they call
  678. 26:04and they call. Congressman Kinzinger's
  679. 26:06office, how can I help you?
  680. 26:07>> We have brand new interns, too. And so
  681. 26:09there have been a lot of conversations
  682. 26:11between me, Luke, the interns on how to
  683. 26:14deal with those.
  684. 26:15>> office, how can I help you?
  685. 26:16>> Just expressing to them that look, this
  686. 26:18is going to like slowly it can
  687. 26:19completely break down your psyche. Like
  688. 26:21you might feel great and then a month
  689. 26:23in, you might just go home and start
  690. 26:25crying and you have no idea why. But
  691. 26:27it's because for 12 hours a day you're
  692. 26:28hearing somebody call you a [ __ ]
  693. 26:30idiot, uh a [ __ ] a traitor, that
  694. 26:32they're coming for you. People are
  695. 26:34getting increasingly hostile
  696. 26:35>> and a little more scary. I hope somebody
  697. 26:37like him kills your nasty wife.
  698. 26:40>> That one's going to Capitol Police.
  699. 26:41That's it. Should I go to district
  700. 26:42staff, too? Yeah. I'm a pretty sensitive
  701. 26:45person.
  702. 26:45>> have panic buttons under our desks.
  703. 26:47>> I also didn't have a lot of experience
  704. 26:49like on the phone.
  705. 26:51>> We had those checked, make sure they
  706. 26:52operate well. I think it might be a
  707. 26:54generational thing.
  708. 26:55>> The Capitol police came in at the
  709. 26:56beginning of the week and they're like,
  710. 26:57"We're going to check on you once every
  711. 26:59hour."
  712. 27:00No, Andrew, I think there were like a
  713. 27:02couple of times, I don't know if you saw
  714. 27:03me, I was just sitting there crying.
  715. 27:05>> [laughter]
  716. 27:06>> I brought you tissues.
  717. 27:08I couldn't believe that people would
  718. 27:10treat strangers like that. We load up.
  719. 27:12No, we do. He literally has a closet
  720. 27:14full of tissues.
  721. 27:21Some family drama for Illinois
  722. 27:23Congressman Adam Kinzinger. This
  723. 27:24handwritten letter obtained by The New
  724. 27:26York Times was sent to Kinzinger from 11
  725. 27:28family members.
  726. 27:29>> is going against his Christian
  727. 27:30principles and has joined [music] the
  728. 27:32devil's army,
  729. 27:33the letter goes on to say, "President
  730. 27:35Trump is not perfect, but neither are
  731. 27:37you or any of us for that [music]
  732. 27:38matter. It is not for us to judge or be
  733. 27:40judged, but he is Christian. It is now
  734. 27:42most embarrassing, that is underlined
  735. 27:44three times,
  736. 27:45>> [music]
  737. 27:45>> to us that we are related to you."
  738. 27:48Kinzinger's cousin spoke to The New York
  739. 27:50Times and said, quote, "I want Adam to
  740. 27:51be shunned."
  741. 27:55I honestly would never have dreamed that
  742. 27:58my family could be so crass and cruel.
  743. 28:03That that that bothered me.
  744. 28:07Well, my college friends wrote me and
  745. 28:10said, "I don't like Adam anymore." And I
  746. 28:12just wanted to answer,
  747. 28:14"Why tell me that? It's you don't have
  748. 28:16to like Adam, but you also don't have to
  749. 28:19tell his mother that you don't like
  750. 28:20him."
  751. 28:22Okay, sandwiches are finished. I don't
  752. 28:24know how many I have, but that's enough
  753. 28:25and I think that's
  754. 28:26>> this one over here?
  755. 28:28Oh, you can eat that one.
  756. 28:29>> I don't want to until I know why it's
  757. 28:31over here.
  758. 28:31>> Because I dropped it on my foot. Oh,
  759. 28:33yeah. You can have it now.
  760. 28:35>> Good call. Any of your cousins who would
  761. 28:37wrote the letter, have you talked to
  762. 28:38them since?
  763. 28:38>> No.
  764. 28:40It's it's awkward. I really don't think
  765. 28:42about it anymore at all. Except for when
  766. 28:44I I making out the list of who to invite
  767. 28:47to the shower.
  768. 28:59>> [laughter]
  769. 28:59>> So nice to see everybody and I'm Chalice
  770. 29:01if you don't remember me. I think most
  771. 29:02people know me so
  772. 29:03>> [music]
  773. 29:04>> and this is Sophia and the beautiful
  774. 29:06little baby.
  775. 29:08Your father thank you so much for
  776. 29:10allowing us all to get here today safely
  777. 29:13and to celebrate
  778. 29:14little Christian Adam and we want to
  779. 29:16pray that
  780. 29:17the remainder of her pregnancy will be
  781. 29:19completely uneventful in [music] a
  782. 29:20wonderful way.
  783. 29:33I'm so scared.
  784. 29:35If I have pee diaper I'll be fine. Pee
  785. 29:37diapers cuz like all my buddies that
  786. 29:39have kids now they're like
  787. 29:41Let me tell you about blow outs.
  788. 29:44And I'm like
  789. 29:45They're back.
  790. 29:47Oh, they'll be fine. Do I just dump them
  791. 29:48in the sink or what?
  792. 29:50Or just leave it like tie
  793. 29:52tie a knot in the bag or something.
  794. 29:57Now I'm taking loot.
  795. 30:15Okay, so we got all the stuff today and
  796. 30:17then tonight I have the gay what? Mhm.
  797. 30:20It's going to be a good day.
  798. 30:22Yeah.
  799. 30:23It's always a good day.
  800. 30:25It's a good day in America.
  801. 30:28We are using this elevator for members
  802. 30:30of Congress.
  803. 30:33My wife and I went and saw Dune. Mhm.
  804. 30:35It's the first movie we've seen in
  805. 30:36probably two and a half years in the
  806. 30:37theater or since the Rona.
  807. 30:40Great freaking movie. There was the old
  808. 30:42like movie in the '80s that was like
  809. 30:44these worms that would eat people.
  810. 30:47But the new Doom's like
  811. 30:49I don't know if it's going to be like a
  812. 30:50trilogy or two or something.
  813. 30:56Come here.
  814. 30:57I think it sounds fine.
  815. 30:59Fine? Not going for fine, pal.
  816. 31:01Great.
  817. 31:02You can't just go from fine to great.
  818. 31:04And he's certainly not going to tell us
  819. 31:05the truth. But we the reason we don't
  820. 31:07need to do that is cuz it's totally
  821. 31:10clear as a matter of objective evidence
  822. 31:12what that was. I think um it it's useful
  823. 31:16for us to think about what the
  824. 31:17difference is in the charge of our
  825. 31:19committee. Okay, we want to tell the
  826. 31:21events of the day. He clearly plays the
  827. 31:23the central role there.
  828. 31:25So you've talked about, you know, the
  829. 31:27value of trust and honesty. If you don't
  830. 31:29have that with your constituents, you're
  831. 31:30not doing your job, uh even if you're
  832. 31:32telling them what they don't want to
  833. 31:32hear. If you're not doing that with each
  834. 31:34other, with your colleagues here,
  835. 31:36you're not doing your job. And you put
  836. 31:38it into a conversation about we're
  837. 31:41better than this. We're better than what
  838. 31:43the public discourse has become. We're
  839. 31:44better than the tribalism that we see.
  840. 31:47What if What if we're wrong about that?
  841. 31:54See man?
  842. 32:06I like this idea.
  843. 32:12Is that still going?
  844. 32:33Well, we had
  845. 32:36quite a long labor.
  846. 32:38Actually, Sophia had quite a long labor.
  847. 32:40But now
  848. 32:43mom's doing good.
  849. 32:45We're getting back to normal. We are
  850. 32:47getting back to normal.
  851. 32:49We are now new parents
  852. 32:50to one
  853. 32:52Christian Adam Kinzinger.
  854. 32:55Hello, Christian.
  855. 32:57Say hi to everybody.
  856. 33:07The RNC will be voting on a resolution
  857. 33:09to censure Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger
  858. 33:12for their involvement in the
  859. 33:13investigation into January 6th.
  860. 33:15Resolution to formally censure Liz
  861. 33:17Cheney and Adam Kinzinger and to no
  862. 33:19longer support them as members of the
  863. 33:21Republican Party.
  864. 33:22All of those in favor of the motion,
  865. 33:24please signify by saying I. I. All of
  866. 33:27those opposed, signify by saying no.
  867. 33:30The eyes have it and the five
  868. 33:31resolutions are adopted. Thank you,
  869. 33:33Richard.
  870. 33:40We have the warm water ready for the
  871. 33:41bath. Okay.
  872. 33:49Good job.
  873. 33:53Dude, he's going to eat the whole thing.
  874. 33:54Should I just let him?
  875. 33:57Let's maybe pull it out, yeah. All
  876. 33:59right. We'll give it to Mom and we'll
  877. 34:01figure out
  878. 34:02how this thing will go down.
  879. 34:04Come on, come on, Mom.
  880. 34:08Did you know ahead of time that they
  881. 34:09were going to kick you out of the party
  882. 34:10or did it come as a surprise when
  883. 34:12suddenly they announced it when the bill
  884. 34:13No, I didn't see any of it coming, but
  885. 34:16um
  886. 34:16for me it's like they're the ones that
  887. 34:19should be ashamed.
  888. 34:20You you are so
  889. 34:22overcome with like this like childish
  890. 34:25anger that you can't control
  891. 34:27because Liz and I make it uncomfortable
  892. 34:30for you.
  893. 34:31It just reveals the truth of how screwed
  894. 34:34up this all is. I mean, not surprising
  895. 34:36to me cuz they're Republicans.
  896. 34:39But now I'm just trying to understand
  897. 34:40why you feel so loyal to this party in
  898. 34:42the first place.
  899. 34:43We saw
  900. 34:46things that you can look back now and
  901. 34:48say this is so logical where he's gone.
  902. 34:50>> Yeah.
  903. 34:51You know, when he was 5 years old
  904. 34:53campaigning for the mayor of
  905. 34:55Jacksonville, Florida.
  906. 34:58We were driving home from church one day
  907. 34:59and I remember seeing a yard sign.
  908. 35:02It was hot pink cuz it was the '80s.
  909. 35:04And I just asked my parents about it.
  910. 35:07That guy's running for mayor and blah
  911. 35:08blah blah.
  912. 35:09And I was just hooked. I was hooked on
  913. 35:10the fanfare of it at first.
  914. 35:12>> THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, JIM EDGAR. WHEN
  915. 35:15WE came up here and lived in McLean
  916. 35:17County,
  917. 35:18his involvement with the Republican
  918. 35:20Party at the time of Jim Edgar Jim Edgar
  919. 35:22was the governor of Illinois. Did he go
  920. 35:25to jail? No, he was the one of the ones
  921. 35:27that didn't. Some people might say I'm a
  922. 35:29little dull.
  923. 35:29>> He dressed as Jim Edgar for Halloween. I
  924. 35:32was 12 when that happened, 12 years of
  925. 35:35age. I also set up a Republican election
  926. 35:38headquarters in my bedroom and I
  927. 35:40pretended like and played election
  928. 35:43headquarters.
  929. 35:44You know, come on by and get a sign.
  930. 35:46But it was my room, so this is my
  931. 35:48parents going by.
  932. 35:53>> [laughter]
  933. 35:54>> He's been serious about this.
  934. 35:56>> Yeah.
  935. 35:57For a long time.
  936. 35:59That was That was so stupid.
  937. 36:02I remember when he would go out and
  938. 36:03after it would rain, he'd put out all
  939. 36:04these political signs. And go dry them
  940. 36:07off.
  941. 36:07>> And he'd get on his bike as soon as the
  942. 36:08rain was over with a cloth and he'd go
  943. 36:10and wipe off the rain off of every
  944. 36:12[laughter] sign.
  945. 36:13That was happening.
  946. 36:14Yeah, that happened.
  947. 36:17>> [laughter]
  948. 36:20>> You were in a debate club?
  949. 36:24So what did you debate?
  950. 36:25Abortion in seventh grade. Wow.
  951. 36:28>> Yeah. What so what side did you take?
  952. 36:29>> Pro-life side. What would you think?
  953. 36:32I had to ask. I was a Republican. I am a
  954. 36:34Republican now. Yeah, who knows?
  955. 36:37I'm a something. You're a something. I'm
  956. 36:39a something.
  957. 36:41How did you choose a political party so
  958. 36:44young?
  959. 36:45You know, my parents were Republican, so
  960. 36:47you know, you're naturally inclined to
  961. 36:48that.
  962. 36:49Ronald Reagan was president, you know,
  963. 36:51he was a pretty inspirational figure. Um
  964. 36:54What F
  965. 36:55>> I can't believe you probably hated
  966. 36:56Reagan. Like
  967. 36:58three people in this country hated
  968. 37:00Reagan. Like then you hated him, but
  969. 37:02then now like Reagan's a good dude. You
  970. 37:04probably still hate him.
  971. 37:05>> Oh, for sure still hate him.
  972. 37:07>> for
  973. 37:07Ronald Reagan, bro.
  974. 37:09>> What's so great about Ronald Reagan? I
  975. 37:11don't know, Soviet Union's gone, [ __ ]
  976. 37:13like that. He didn't do that. They spent
  977. 37:15their way out of the
  978. 37:15>> I think he did a pretty good job of
  979. 37:17that. He did he wasn't great.
  980. 37:18>> Whatever, I'm not going to get into this
  981. 37:19with you because literally if it was a
  982. 37:21war against Reagan supporters and
  983. 37:22non-Reagan supporters, you guys would
  984. 37:24lose quickly cuz there's only like seven
  985. 37:26of you in the country.
  986. 37:28Reagan raised taxes, I believe, too,
  987. 37:29right?
  988. 37:30>> Yeah, I'm not I'm not like a Reagan guy
  989. 37:31cuz he didn't raise taxes. I'm a Reagan
  990. 37:34guy cuz he was awesome. Springtime of
  991. 37:36youth.
  992. 37:37Some lights seem eternal. You know,
  993. 37:39Reagan was president, like Rocky was
  994. 37:41big. Red Dawn was a great movie. Red
  995. 37:44Dawn is a perfect film. It's the best
  996. 37:47film
  997. 37:48that's ever been created besides Hot Tub
  998. 37:50Time Machine.
  999. 37:50>> Thank you. As a kid, I remember sitting
1000. 37:53in high school daydreaming that like the
1001. 37:54Russians are attacking. Like the army
1002. 37:56comes by and they're like, we need a guy
1003. 37:58to defend the school, and of course they
1004. 38:00pick me, throw me an M4, and I just like
1005. 38:03just wasting Russians that are coming to
  1006. 38:04the school.
1007. 38:05And all the girls are like, "Oh, Adam."
  1008. 38:08>> [laughter]
  1009. 38:08>> I was a Civil War reenactor at 16 as
1010. 38:11well, so let's keep going. It was the
1011. 38:13north, by the way. Mhm.
1012. 38:15It's good Otherwise, I would not have
  1013. 38:16told you that I was a Civil War
  1014. 38:18reenactor
  1015. 38:19just now.
1016. 38:23And so, I got accepted at Illinois
1017. 38:25State. I had a friend that said to me
1018. 38:28like, "You should run for the county
  1019. 38:29board." I don't think he meant it like,
1020. 38:32"You should run for the county board." I
1021. 38:33think he meant it like,
  1022. 38:35"You should run."
  1023. 38:37And then I'm like, "Oh, okay." And I
  1024. 38:38ran.
  1025. 38:41I won, and
1026. 38:43that was the beginning of kind of my
  1027. 38:44foray into politics.
  1028. 38:469/11 happens, and I'm just like, "I'm
1029. 38:47going to go try to fly."
  1030. 38:49And then I remember in 2006 when I was
1031. 38:52in Milwaukee, I just gotten back out of
  1032. 38:53pilot training,
1033. 38:55there was a stabbing incident um in
  1034. 38:57which I had to intervene on a guy
  1035. 38:59murdering his girlfriend.
  1036. 39:07I had left a German restaurant 12:26 in
1037. 39:10the morning, and I'm walking to my car,
  1038. 39:12hear commotion, and
1039. 39:14this girl's running at me holding her
1040. 39:15throat, you know, bleeding out, really.
1041. 39:19You know, they say in a crisis half of
  1042. 39:20the people run, 40% freeze,
1043. 39:23and 10% act. I felt every one of those
1044. 39:26emotions. If somebody would have
1045. 39:27whispered run to me, I would have run.
1046. 39:30But, there were two immediate thoughts
1047. 39:31that went through my head. The first one
1048. 39:33was like, "If I act, I'm going to die."
1049. 39:37The second one was, "If I watch
1050. 39:40this girl this lady die,
  1051. 39:42and I did nothing, I can't live with
1052. 39:44myself the rest of my life."
  1053. 39:46It was a close grapple.
1054. 39:49Dude was bigger than me.
1055. 39:51I had his knife hand, and I remember
  1056. 39:53consciously
1057. 39:54feeling that knife hand now trying to
  1058. 39:56stab me.
  1059. 39:57And
  1060. 39:59I have to win this. It's not It's not a
  1061. 40:01matter of pride now, it's a matter of
  1062. 40:02life to win.
  1063. 40:05I got him down,
1064. 40:06and I had made the decision in my mind
  1065. 40:08to kill him.
1066. 40:10And I was justified in that, but
1067. 40:13I had no extra arms to do any killing,
  1068. 40:16you know, I I had one
1069. 40:18pinning his hand down, the other I had
1070. 40:20his hair and I smashing his face into
  1071. 40:22the ground.
1072. 40:23Eventually, Megan, who was the girl I
1073. 40:26was with that night, came over. I told
1074. 40:27her to kick the knife out. She did that.
1075. 40:30And the police showed up not much longer
  1076. 40:32after that.
1077. 40:34You know, they arrest him. I have blood
1078. 40:36all over me and it was just from him
1079. 40:37that he got from the brief interaction
1080. 40:39with her. That's how much she was
  1081. 40:40bleeding.
1082. 40:41She ended up with 110 stitches in her
  1083. 40:43neck.
1084. 40:44The shirt that had all the blood, I
1085. 40:45could I could not bring myself to wash
1086. 40:47it for some reason. It stayed in a
  1087. 40:49corner in my room.
1088. 40:51And then it was about two or three
  1089. 40:52months later I started to realize I had
  1090. 40:53some PTSD from it.
1091. 41:00That moment on that street in Milwaukee
  1092. 41:03utterly changed my life.
  1093. 41:05Do I think I would have been sitting
  1094. 41:07here today
1095. 41:09talking about what happened in my
1096. 41:12congressional career or if I even would
  1097. 41:13have had a congressional career without
1098. 41:15the incident in Milwaukee? Probably not.
1099. 41:20And now I'm fighting for the soul of a
1100. 41:22party that I think is going to be an
1101. 41:24important political party in this
  1102. 41:25country.
1103. 41:29But if the party doesn't want to be
  1104. 41:30fought for,
1105. 41:35it's tough to see the light at the end
  1106. 41:37of the tunnel.
1107. 41:45I mean, there were definitely moments
  1108. 41:46where I didn't want to be there anymore.
1109. 41:48Like there were moments where I would
  1110. 41:50have wanted to quit.
1111. 41:52I did not What was the moment you wanted
  1112. 41:53to quit?
  1113. 41:54I mean,
1114. 41:55really probably that time frame between
1115. 41:58when we had our first hearing and then
1116. 41:59we had our set of hearings. If you
1117. 42:01notice, we had one hearing in August and
  1118. 42:04we haven't had a hearing since. The vast
1119. 42:06majority of our work on the committee
1120. 42:09is depositions, meetings behind the
  1121. 42:11scenes. It's an investigation, right?
1122. 42:20So, despite what you see on TV,
1123. 42:22we all generally can, when the doors
1124. 42:25close, can work together well on any
  1125. 42:27committee.
  1126. 42:30But yeah, going into it, I mean, I I
1127. 42:32think we were very much on edge,
1128. 42:34everybody, about this cannot descend
  1129. 42:36into anything partisan.
1130. 42:39A couple times Raskin tried. He had said
1131. 42:41at one point, "Well, part of our
1132. 42:43recommendations have to be to get rid of
  1133. 42:44the Electoral College." And we're like,
  1134. 42:46"Listen,
  1135. 42:47we don't disagree.
1136. 42:49That's This isn't the place for that."
1137. 42:51He was really trying to push his right
1138. 42:52to ask questions at every hearing. He's
1139. 42:55very smart and he'll make sure you know
  1140. 42:57that.
1141. 42:58You have Stephanie Murphy, who was
1142. 43:00always defend her right and if she felt
1143. 43:02she was being disregarded, was clear
1144. 43:03about that. Elaine Luria, my fellow
1145. 43:05veteran, you know, really good person.
1146. 43:08Zoe Lofgren, she was in essence the
1147. 43:12kind of the bridge to Nancy Pelosi.
1148. 43:16Bennie, he's the one that can take any
1149. 43:18time conflicts exist on the committee
1150. 43:20and really allow it to kind of burn
1151. 43:22itself out before having to bring it to
1152. 43:24a head. He gets a lot of credit for
1153. 43:25allowing Liz to take the lead she did
1154. 43:29because he could have said no.
1155. 43:30Obviously, Liz is the bulldog. You
1156. 43:32couldn't challenge her on the facts
1157. 43:34because she knew the facts. She would
1158. 43:36rub people the wrong way sometimes, but
1159. 43:38she did it in a way that everybody
1160. 43:39respected because, you know, she knew
  1161. 43:41her stuff.
1162. 43:46Do you believe the violence on January
  1163. 43:476th was justified morally?
  1164. 43:53Fifth the Fifth.
1165. 43:54Do you believe the violence on January
  1166. 43:566th was justified legally?
  1167. 43:59Fifth.
1168. 44:00Mr. Stone, did you have any role in
1169. 44:02planning for the violence on January
1170. 44:046th? Uh Uh, once again, I will assert my
1171. 44:07Fifth Amendment right to decline to
  1172. 44:09answer your question.
  1173. 44:11Fifth.
  1174. 44:12Fifth.
1175. 44:13General Flynn, do you believe in the
1176. 44:15peaceful transition of power in the
  1177. 44:16United States of America?
  1178. 44:19The fifth.
1179. 44:21Problem is in the committee,
1180. 44:23you know, every day we're kind of
1181. 44:24pulling finding a new string, right? And
1182. 44:26if you pull on that string, that means
1183. 44:28new subpoenas, which means new
  1184. 44:29information. And there's a point at
1185. 44:31which this thing could go on for two or
1186. 44:33three years, but uh, if the Republicans
1187. 44:35take power, which they likely will in
  1188. 44:37January, you know, that's the clock
  1189. 44:39anyway. So,
1190. 44:41uh, but I think we have a lot of
1191. 44:42information be able to tell a good
  1192. 44:43story. Not a good story, a bad story,
  1193. 44:46but in a good way.
  1194. 44:48Well, if the
1195. 44:49if the Republicans take over, they will
  1196. 44:51kill this.
  1197. 44:54We have got a January 6th hearing that
1198. 44:56is going to start in like an hour
  1199. 44:58focused on something that happened 18
1200. 45:00months ago. You know, the polls have
1201. 45:02said people have moved on from January
  1202. 45:046th.
1203. 45:05That's a frustration leading up to it
  1204. 45:06and it
1205. 45:07and just is anybody going to pay
  1206. 45:09attention? Breaking tonight, the
1207. 45:11dullest, the most boring [music]
  1208. 45:13multi-hour Democratic fundraiser
  1209. 45:15masquerading as a January 6th hearing.
1210. 45:18>> You really didn't think anyone was going
  1211. 45:20to pay attention and
1212. 45:20>> No, I told you I think the moment before
1213. 45:22the first hearing I thought it was going
1214. 45:24to fail. I was worried about it.
1215. 45:25Columnist David Brooks writes for the
  1216. 45:27New York Times a piece entitled
  1217. 45:29>> [music]
1218. 45:29>> "The January 6th Committee Has Already
  1219. 45:31Blown It".
  1220. 45:33And I knew that you know, obviously I
1221. 45:35was going to be judged by what happened.
1222. 45:48We all kind of line up on that door off
  1223. 45:50the anteroom.
  1224. 45:53And
  1225. 45:54there's a countdown.
1226. 45:56Because it's timed with the national TV
  1227. 45:58and
1228. 45:59somebody at the front's like, "Okay, you
  1229. 46:01know, 15 seconds." and we're all kind of
  1230. 46:03getting in line." And 10 9 5 and then
1231. 46:06two staffers, boom, open the doors.
  1232. 46:11Dead silence.
1233. 46:14All you hear is cameras clicking, like
  1234. 46:17something like out of 1920s.
1235. 46:20Liz sat next to me. So, I'm like,
  1236. 46:23is it am I an [ __ ] if I sit down
  1237. 46:25before she does?
  1238. 46:30And I've done hearings a million times,
  1239. 46:32but
1240. 46:33this had a this had a feeling that was
  1241. 46:35very different.
  1242. 46:44Tonight, you will see never-before-seen
1243. 46:47footage of the brutal attack on our
  1244. 46:49capital.
1245. 46:50Those who invaded our capital and
1246. 46:53battled law enforcement for hours were
1247. 46:55motivated by what President Trump had
  1248. 46:58told them.
1249. 46:59That the election was stolen and that he
  1250. 47:01was the rightful president.
1251. 47:03Now, central question is whether the
1252. 47:05attack on the capital was coordinated
  1253. 47:08and planned.
1254. 47:12You know, Trump has only asked me for
1255. 47:13two things. He asked me for my vote and
1256. 47:16he asked me to come on January 6th. I
1257. 47:19remember Donald Trump telling people to
  1258. 47:20be there.
1259. 47:21>> Personally asked for us to come to D.C.
1260. 47:23>> why I was there and that's because he
  1261. 47:25called me there.
1262. 47:26>> Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.
1263. 47:30Proud Boys, by the president of the
  1264. 47:31United States.
1265. 47:32"Be there," he instructed them.
  1266. 47:35"Will be wild."
1267. 47:37This tweet initiated a chain of events.
1268. 47:40They viewed this tweet as a call to
  1269. 47:42arms. It's either President Trump is
1270. 47:43encouraged and bolstered strengthened to
1271. 47:45do what he must do, or we wind up in a
1272. 47:48in a bloody fight. We all know that. The
  1273. 47:50fight's coming.
1274. 47:51On January 5th, the night before the
1275. 47:54attack, you were with the head of the
  1276. 47:56Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio.
  1277. 47:59What happened? We
1278. 48:02encountered Mr. Stewart Rhodes from the
1279. 48:04Oath Keepers, drove down into the
1280. 48:07parking garage, and filmed Mr. Tarrio
1281. 48:10and Mr. Rhodes. What you witnessed is
  1282. 48:13what a coordinated and planned effort
  1283. 48:15would look like.
1284. 48:17All hell is going to break loose
  1285. 48:19tomorrow.
1286. 48:21Just understand this. All hell is going
1287. 48:22to break loose tomorrow. We're going to
1288. 48:24walk down to the capital. The crowd
  1289. 48:27turned from protesters
  1290. 48:30to rioters,
  1291. 48:32to insurrectionists.
1292. 48:35Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do
1293. 48:38what should have been done to protect
1294. 48:39our country and our Constitution, giving
  1295. 48:43states a chance to certify a correct and
  1296. 48:45set of facts.
1297. 48:49President Trump believed his supporters
  1298. 48:51at the capital, and I quote,
1299. 48:54"We're doing what they should be doing."
1300. 48:57The attack on our capital was not a
  1301. 48:59spontaneous riot.
1302. 49:01President Trump summoned the mob,
1303. 49:03assembled the mob, and lit the flame of
  1304. 49:06this attack.
1305. 49:08Washington set the indispensable example
1306. 49:10of the peaceful transfer of power,
1307. 49:13what President Reagan called nothing
  1308. 49:15less than a miracle.
1309. 49:17The sacred obligation to defend this
1310. 49:19peaceful transfer of power has been
1311. 49:22honored by every American president,
  1312. 49:25except one.
1313. 49:33As we walked out, we always kind of
  1314. 49:35stand around talking, there's a little
1315. 49:36bit of buzz in the room. This was not
  1316. 49:39like a typical congressional hearing
1317. 49:41where you might see people kind of drop
1318. 49:42off or or want to leave the room.
1319. 49:45>> We just sit there and hear what the
1320. 49:45media is saying, and it's kind of like,
1321. 49:48"We did good." I've no idea how this
1322. 49:49will play in the rest of the country,
1323. 49:51but in that hearing room, the video that
  1324. 49:54was shown hit like a sledgehammer.
1325. 49:57I think a plant from Nancy Pelosi.
1326. 50:00It just goes to show we're in a bizarre
1327. 50:02world a little bit. Hey, that went
  1328. 50:04better than you thought.
1329. 50:07It was it was a blowout success.
  1330. 50:09But
1331. 50:11you know, one of my biggest
1332. 50:12disappointments with Fox not carrying it
1333. 50:14cuz those are the people that need to
1334. 50:15watch it. Last night were the 19 million
  1335. 50:17people watched the January 6th
1336. 50:19Committee's first public hearing. All of
1337. 50:21the major news networks aired it except
1338. 50:23for one. Of course, the odd one out, as
1339. 50:25you can see there in the center, is Fox
1340. 50:27News. You really should care about
  1341. 50:28January 6th cuz democracy.
1342. 50:32The overwhelming majority of Americans
  1343. 50:33don't care about January 6th.
1344. 50:37There are people that have been lied to
1345. 50:39and abused by the former president and
1346. 50:41convinced that no matter what facts are
1347. 50:43in front of their face, he is the most
  1348. 50:45trustworthy person. I don't know how
1349. 50:47long it's going to take to open those
  1350. 50:49folks' eyes. Uh, but we're certainly
1351. 50:51going to put the truth in front of them.
1352. 50:52That's what we can do. That's just
  1353. 50:53that's just such a tone-deaf comment to
1354. 50:55make uh from Speaker Pelosi. She says
1355. 50:57nobody's in danger. I mean, we had a an
1356. 50:59armed gunman show up to to Justice
1357. 51:01Kavanaugh's house with the intent to
  1358. 51:03kill him.
1359. 51:04>> And we've just gone through the first
  1360. 51:05day of the January 6th Committee
1361. 51:07hearings airing last night. What is more
1362. 51:10important to your constituents in Texas,
1363. 51:13inflation and gas prices or January the
  1364. 51:156th?
1365. 51:17Well, inflation obviously ranks way,
  1366. 51:19way, way
1367. 51:19>> of power cannot happen like this ever
1368. 51:22again because we will not be a
1369. 51:24functioning democracy with any more of
  1370. 51:26these.
1371. 51:27That's a huge audience that we want to
1372. 51:29make sure sees the the hearings and sees
1373. 51:32the the facts that are coming out from
1374. 51:34the hearings. Um, so now they've moved
1375. 51:37several of the hearings to the
1376. 51:39afternoon, um, so that Fox does cover
  1377. 51:42them.
  1378. 51:49Okay, I can understand why you'd want
1379. 51:50Fox to cover the hearings, but from my
  1380. 51:52perspective, who cares?
1381. 51:54You're not changing anyone's mind on Fox
  1382. 51:56anyway. I mean, you've got Republican
1383. 51:59after Republican testifying that they
1384. 52:00didn't believe in the big lie. You've
  1385. 52:01got Trump's Attorney General, Bill Barr.
1386. 52:04I told him that the stuff that his
1387. 52:05people were shoveling out to the public
  1388. 52:07was [ __ ] I mean, that the claims of
  1389. 52:09fraud were [ __ ] And I didn't want
1390. 52:12to be a part of it. You've got Eric
  1391. 52:14Herschmann, Trump's White House
1392. 52:15attorney. She says, "Well, the judges
1393. 52:17are corrupt." And I was like, "Everyone?
1394. 52:20Every single case that you've done in
1395. 52:21the country you guys lost, every one of
1396. 52:23them is corrupt? Even the ones we
  1397. 52:24appointed?" You've got fiercely
  1398. 52:26conservative Republican officials from
1399. 52:27Arizona and Georgia. President Biden
1400. 52:30carried the state of Georgia by
  1401. 52:31approximately 12,000 votes. Well, then
1402. 52:34All I want to do is this. I just want to
  1403. 52:37find
  1404. 52:38uh
  1405. 52:3911,780
1406. 52:43votes, which is one more than we have.
1407. 52:46Because we won the state.
1408. 52:49And rounding out the batting order is
1409. 52:51the what? Pomegranate red Republican
1410. 52:53leadership of the Department of Justice.
1411. 52:55The president turned to me
  1412. 52:58and he said,
1413. 52:59"Well, one thing we know is you, Rosen,
1414. 53:02you aren't going to do anything. You
1415. 53:04don't even uh agree with the claims of
1416. 53:06election fraud." The conversation at
1417. 53:08this point was really about whether the
1418. 53:11president should remove Jeff Rosen and
  1419. 53:13replace him. And That's a coup.
  1420. 53:17That's like
1421. 53:19How did the president respond to that,
  1422. 53:21sir?
1423. 53:22He responded very quickly and said,
  1424. 53:25essentially, "Uh that's not what I'm
1425. 53:26asking you to do. What I'm just asking
1426. 53:28you to do is just say it was corrupt and
1427. 53:30leave the rest to me and the Republican
1428. 53:31congressmen." "Just say the election was
  1429. 53:34corrupt
1430. 53:35and leave the rest to me and the
  1431. 53:36Republican congressmen."
  1432. 53:39Mr. Donoghue, that's a direct quote from
  1433. 53:41President Trump, correct? That's an
1434. 53:43exact quote from the president, yes.
  1435. 53:47There's obviously been a lot of
1436. 53:48misinformation out there, but to hear it
  1437. 53:50from Republican appointees,
1438. 53:53uh people appointed by Donald Trump, uh
1439. 53:55how he tried to use the Department of
1440. 53:56Justice as yet another prong to overcome
1441. 53:59the will of the people, uh it was
1442. 54:01powerful. Thank you, guys. Appreciate
1443. 54:04it. So, again, my point is you have a
1444. 54:05parade of Republicans damning the
  1445. 54:08president's lies, but what's the hot
1446. 54:09take over at Fox? We've heard it all
1447. 54:11before, and the hearings are
  1448. 54:13overproduced.
1449. 54:14>> This show trial is not reassuring
  1450. 54:15anyone. It's a political theater, 100%
1451. 54:18Hollywood production with all the
1452. 54:20creative license that would go along
  1453. 54:22with that. Yeah, that's the criticism
  1454. 54:24that comes from somebody that's getting
1455. 54:25their ass handed to him.
  1456. 54:27Yeah, you could say it's overproduced.
  1457. 54:29Um
  1458. 54:30but
1459. 54:32it's truth. When that criticism came,
  1460. 54:34I'm like, "Oh, that means you're
  1461. 54:35losing."
1462. 54:36Okay, but what are they losing? You keep
1463. 54:38saying that the goal of the hearings is
  1464. 54:39to tell the story of Jan 6. We're
  1465. 54:41talking about a criminal conspiracy, and
  1466. 54:42I don't understand why you're not all
1467. 54:44over criminal referrals. Yeah, my
1468. 54:46frustration with it is that it becomes
1469. 54:48the MSNBC talking point. And I got to
1470. 54:51ask about this every day, are you going
1471. 54:53to make criminal referrals? If you talk
1472. 54:55about the issue of criminality, do you
1473. 54:57see things heading that way for uh
  1474. 55:00former President Trump?
  1475. 55:01>> And I'm like, "It doesn't matter." But
  1476. 55:03Congressman, can't you make criminal
1477. 55:04referrals to the DOJ? Yeah. Yeah, we can
1478. 55:08refer. Where do you stand on that, the
  1479. 55:10referral? What you
1480. 55:12What do you think about what's the
1481. 55:13conversation going to be about? You
  1482. 55:14know, we're sitting here showing these
1483. 55:15things that are happening, and people
1484. 55:17are like, "Are you going to make
  1485. 55:18criminal referrals?" Like,
  1486. 55:20maybe, I don't know, it doesn't matter.
1487. 55:22Whether we make a criminal referral or
1488. 55:23not has nothing to do with whether he's
1489. 55:25criminally liable or whether DOJ takes
  1490. 55:27it up.
1491. 55:28So, that was the frustration, because
1492. 55:30there was so much more to do.
1493. 55:32You know, one of the things I've come to
1494. 55:33think about and realize is
1495. 55:35short of staff members and congress
1496. 55:38people on the hill, nobody really knows
  1497. 55:41what happened.
1498. 55:43And not just the violence, but like the
1499. 55:44stuff that led up to it. But you see it
1500. 55:47all together and it's like, oh yeah,
  1501. 55:48that's a big deal, you know.
1502. 55:53It was funny cuz the
1503. 55:54the guy that had been out outside
1504. 55:59every morning, so they rotate and it's
1505. 56:01like 12-hour shifts. So in the morning
1506. 56:03it's always the same guy.
1507. 56:05Um so he asked, "How is Christian? How
1508. 56:08is Christian doing? How did Christian do
1509. 56:10last night? How is he doing with his
1510. 56:12sleep training?" So I thought it was
  1511. 56:13funny.
  1512. 56:14They're all They're all invested. All
1513. 56:15the security is invested in his sleep.
1514. 56:18Really? You guys have security? Yeah, we
  1515. 56:20do. Uh-huh.
  1516. 56:21In Illinois?
1517. 56:23Yeah, we've got We had to put security
  1518. 56:25on our house, so they're We have a
  1519. 56:27company that's there basically like 24
  1520. 56:29hours now. Okay.
1521. 56:31Yeah, cuz people want to kill me, so you
  1522. 56:33know.
  1523. 56:34That sucks, right?
1524. 56:37Surprise announcement from the January
1525. 56:396th Committee just this afternoon,
  1526. 56:42stunning a lot of the reporters who've
1527. 56:43covered this very thing. The House
  1528. 56:44Select Committee on January 6th
1529. 56:46announced that it would be holding a
1530. 56:47surprise hearing tomorrow. Uh this will
1531. 56:50be a surprise witness uh heading into
1532. 56:53tomorrow's hearing. Let me see. I'm just
1533. 56:55sitting right there, but whatever.
1534. 56:56What's up, dude? We met with her
  1535. 56:57yesterday and we think she's she's going
  1536. 57:01to be great. She's a It's clear I think
  1537. 57:02she's got
1538. 57:04I mean you would you have
1539. 57:05>> I know her better than us, but uh from
1540. 57:06having spent time with her but Not
1541. 57:07really. I've only met her like once or
  1542. 57:08twice. [music]
1543. 57:09>> Well, I mean from from her telling she
1544. 57:10appreciates the the consideration that
  1545. 57:12you've given her.
  1546. 57:15Today the January 6th Committee will
1547. 57:17hear live testimony from a White House
1548. 57:19advisor who was right there [music] in
1549. 57:21the West Wing on January 6th and in the
1550. 57:24days and weeks leading up to the attack
  1551. 57:26on the capital.
1552. 57:27>> will please stand and raise her right
  1553. 57:28hand.
1554. 57:29>> is Cassidy Hutchinson. She was an
1555. 57:32assistant to Mark Meadows, the chief of
1556. 57:34staff, and she was the right there in
1557. 57:36the West Wing while the capital was
  1558. 57:38under attack.
1559. 57:40Based on what she has already told the
  1560. 57:41committee,
1561. 57:43investigators tell me that they believe
1562. 57:44that she will truly be one of the star
  1563. 57:46witnesses of this investigation.
1564. 57:49When we were in the off-stage announced
1565. 57:51area tent behind the stage,
1566. 57:53he was very concerned about the shot,
1567. 57:56meaning the photograph that we would get
  1568. 57:58because the rally space wasn't full.
  1569. 58:00Um
1570. 58:01and he was angry at that we weren't
1571. 58:03letting people through the mags with
  1572. 58:04weapons.
1573. 58:06What the Secret Service deemed as
  1574. 58:07weapons and our
  1575. 58:09our weapons.
1576. 58:12Ms. Hutchinson, I just want to confirm
1577. 58:14that that is when you heard the
1578. 58:15president say the people with weapons
1579. 58:17weren't there to hurt him and that he
1580. 58:18wanted the Secret Service to remove the
  1581. 58:20magnetometers. That's correct. In the
1582. 58:22photos that you displayed, we were
1583. 58:24standing towards the front of the tent
  1584. 58:25with the TVs
1585. 58:27really close to where he would walk out
1586. 58:30to go onto the stage.
  1587. 58:31Did these conversations happen
1588. 58:342 to 3 minutes before he took the stage
  1589. 58:36that morning?
1590. 58:37I was in the I was in the vicinity of a
  1591. 58:39conversation where I overheard the
1592. 58:40president say something to the effect
  1593. 58:42of,
  1594. 58:43you know, I I don't I think I don't care
  1595. 58:44that they have weapons.
1596. 58:46They're not here to hurt me. Take the
1597. 58:47effing mags away. Let my people in. They
1598. 58:50can march to the capital from here. Let
1599. 58:51the people in. Take the effing mags
  1600. 58:53away.
1601. 58:55Then they can march to the capital.
1602. 58:59President Trump expressed to multiple
1603. 59:01White House aides that he wanted to go
1604. 59:03to the capital after his speech. We know
1605. 59:06that White House counsel Pat Cipollone
1606. 59:08was concerned about the legal
1607. 59:10implications of such a trip. Is that
  1608. 59:12correct? That's correct. Mr. Cipollone
1609. 59:15said something to the effect of,
1610. 59:17"Please make sure we don't go up to the
  1611. 59:19capital, Cassidy.
1612. 59:21We're going to get charged with every
1613. 59:22crime imaginable if we make that
  1614. 59:25movement happen."
  1615. 59:27Hutchinson's testimony was such a game
  1616. 59:28changer even Fox News
1617. 59:31didn't know how to spin it. What was so
  1618. 59:33compelling I think
1619. 59:35is is how it was laid out. But the
1620. 59:37testimony in and of itself
  1621. 59:39is really really powerful.
1622. 59:45Sandra, are you still here? Indeed, yes,
  1623. 59:47I am here.
  1624. 59:50>> [cheering]
1625. 59:50>> How do you feel about the speed with
1626. 59:53which the Justice Department is [snorts]
  1627. 59:54bringing indictments of any kind? I'm
  1628. 59:56frustrated at
1629. 59:58the speed. I know they have a job to do,
1630. 1:00:01but when you try to overthrow the will
1631. 1:00:03of the people and you try a coup in the
1632. 1:00:05United States government, you have to
1633. 1:00:07pay for that. Period. That's what we
  1634. 1:00:09require.
1635. 1:00:13It's a weird feeling to kind of
1636. 1:00:16go out and know that how polarizing of a
  1637. 1:00:18figure you are.
1638. 1:00:24All of us in politics want to be better
1639. 1:00:26known because it makes us more
  1640. 1:00:28effective.
1641. 1:00:30Once you vote for the committee,
  1642. 1:00:32particularly
1643. 1:00:34once the hearings are happening
1644. 1:00:37the kind of fame you get is very
  1645. 1:00:38different.
  1646. 1:00:41Your social circle shifts.
1647. 1:00:43You lose all your friends. You gain some
1648. 1:00:45new ones, but you don't really trust
1649. 1:00:46them because they only like you because
1650. 1:00:48you're speaking out. So until they find
  1651. 1:00:50out you're still conservative, they're
  1652. 1:00:51like, oh, well, you're just no
  1653. 1:00:53different. And
1654. 1:00:55You lost all your friends? Yeah, I lost
1655. 1:00:57all my friends. Because you keep saying
1656. 1:00:59you, but I still have all my friends.
1657. 1:01:01Like, what is this? Like, you say you a
1658. 1:01:03lot. Like, what is this?
  1659. 1:01:04>> I think there's a level of protection in
  1660. 1:01:06when I say like you and I'm talking
  1661. 1:01:09about me. Right. There's probably a bit
1662. 1:01:11of a level of protection in that because
  1663. 1:01:13>> What's that about?
1664. 1:01:14You go I have come to realize
1665. 1:01:19in the last few whatever
  1666. 1:01:21weeks, months
1667. 1:01:23like how much of an impact this has
  1668. 1:01:25really had on me.
1669. 1:01:31People tell me, you know, what you did
  1670. 1:01:32is heroic.
  1671. 1:01:35And I again appreciate it. It's nice to
  1672. 1:01:37say. I'm
1673. 1:01:41But I get this sense of like
1674. 1:01:43a battle in World War and there's this
  1675. 1:01:45tank
1676. 1:01:46right rolling through this battle.
  1677. 1:01:50And it's getting the [ __ ] kicked out of
1678. 1:01:51it. Just getting beat up, scarred.
1679. 1:01:56Rolls out the other end of this battle.
1680. 1:01:57And everybody's like, look at that tank.
  1681. 1:01:59Survived. Like it's a heroic tank.
  1682. 1:02:02But that doesn't mean it's not scarred.
  1683. 1:02:04And it doesn't mean it's ready to fight
  1684. 1:02:05again. You're the tank. I feel like the
  1685. 1:02:07tank.
1686. 1:02:08In the battle, you don't think about it.
1687. 1:02:11All you're thinking about is like, this
1688. 1:02:13is what's in front of me. This is what
1689. 1:02:15we have to do. You know, here's the
  1690. 1:02:16committee. Here's the next hearing. Here
  1691. 1:02:18is this report that's due.
  1692. 1:02:20>> [music]
  1693. 1:02:20>> And then it's all done and you're
1694. 1:02:22sitting there in this tank. And then the
1695. 1:02:24weight of what happens sits on you.
  1696. 1:02:27And so I think sometimes I don't I don't
  1697. 1:02:29necessarily understand if I say like
1698. 1:02:30you, it's it you have to psychologically
1699. 1:02:34I have to psychologically protect myself
1700. 1:02:37from some of those impacts.
  1701. 1:02:38And that's something I'm working
  1702. 1:02:39through.
  1703. 1:02:43Okay.
  1704. 1:02:44Um
  1705. 1:02:45cool. Paul.
  1706. 1:02:47Okay, can I talk to you?
  1707. 1:02:52Have a donut. I can't be eating more
  1708. 1:02:54sugar, but I will.
  1709. 1:02:58I'm leaving.
  1710. 1:02:59Congratulations. What?
1711. 1:03:02Um next month, early next month. So
1712. 1:03:06next week will be well, that'll be our
1713. 1:03:07last week like in the office together.
1714. 1:03:09So anyway, I just wanted to let you
  1715. 1:03:11know.
  1716. 1:03:12But I've really enjoyed it.
1717. 1:03:13>> us where you're going yet or
1718. 1:03:15I'm actually not going anywhere yet.
1719. 1:03:17I've been on the hill for almost 12
  1720. 1:03:18years.
  1721. 1:03:19It's a long time. It's like a line from
  1722. 1:03:21Miss Congeniality. Like, I am the job. I
1723. 1:03:22am the job. And so so much of what I've
1724. 1:03:24been, you know, the last 12 years is a
1725. 1:03:26Capitol stuffer. You know, this is my
  1726. 1:03:29my world, basically.
1727. 1:03:31This job has been, like I said, really
  1728. 1:03:33rewarding, but it's also really taxing.
1729. 1:03:35Now, you can feel free to cry if you
1730. 1:03:36want. I mean, just get it all out.
1731. 1:03:39Whatever you feels best, but
1732. 1:03:41>> My announcement will be coming soon
1733. 1:03:42after, so it's going to be a rodeo last
  1734. 1:03:45or whatever. I don't even know what I'm
1735. 1:03:46going to be screwed, man. That's the
  1736. 1:03:48spirit.
1737. 1:03:49I had told the congressman Tuesday
  1738. 1:03:51evening. So, I heard the news.
  1739. 1:03:54I know. I heard the news.
1740. 1:03:57I think we get it. Like, we need a
  1741. 1:03:59break. Everybody needs a break. It's
1742. 1:04:01just been a lot. Like, rest and and
1743. 1:04:04think and whatever you feel makes you
1744. 1:04:07happy, go for it. Thank you. I love you
1745. 1:04:09guys. I did not cry. So, good job, me.
1746. 1:04:16I feel like I'm going to leave this
1747. 1:04:17place in a really like a good spot for
  1748. 1:04:18the congressman. And
  1749. 1:04:20that's all I can do, right? I mean
  1750. 1:04:22Thursday's hearing, it's no longer in
1751. 1:04:24prime time cuz the NBA games are
  1752. 1:04:25happening.
1753. 1:04:26>> finish up the race as best I can and
1754. 1:04:29walk out with my head held high.
1755. 1:04:32All right. So, this is for hearing
  1756. 1:04:33seven.
  1757. 1:04:33>> Oh my lord. I know.
1758. 1:04:36Because what you will learn is that for
  1759. 1:04:37187 minute 87 minutes over 3 hours,
1760. 1:04:40President Trump refused to tell the mob
1761. 1:04:42to stop the carnage and leave the
1762. 1:04:44Capitol despite emphatic pleas from
1763. 1:04:47staff, family, and advisors. What you
1764. 1:04:49will learn is that President Trump sat
1765. 1:04:51in his dining room and watched the
1766. 1:04:53attack on television while his senior
1767. 1:04:55most staff, closest advisors, and family
1768. 1:04:57members begged him to do what is
1769. 1:05:00expected of any American president.
1770. 1:05:03One week after the attack, Republican
1771. 1:05:05leader Kevin McCarthy acknowledged the
  1772. 1:05:07simple truth.
1773. 1:05:10The president bears responsibility for
1774. 1:05:12Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob
  1775. 1:05:14rioters.
1776. 1:05:15He should have immediately denounced the
1777. 1:05:17mob when he saw what was unfolding.
  1778. 1:05:19Leader McCarthy, who I had a good
1779. 1:05:21relationship with, he told me he was
1780. 1:05:23getting really ugly over at the Capitol
1781. 1:05:25and said, "Please, you know, anything
1782. 1:05:26you could do to help, I would appreciate
1783. 1:05:28it." You know, they were scared. Think
1784. 1:05:30about that. Leader McCarthy, who was one
  1785. 1:05:32of the president's strongest supporters,
1786. 1:05:35was scared and begging for help.
1787. 1:05:39President Trump turned him down.
1788. 1:05:42And he kept resisting for another almost
  1789. 1:05:452 hours.
1790. 1:05:47President Trump finally agreed to record
1791. 1:05:49an address to the nation the evening of
1792. 1:05:51January 7th because of concerns he might
1793. 1:05:54be removed from power under the 25th
  1794. 1:05:56Amendment. Whenever you're ready, sir.
1795. 1:06:08I would like to begin by addressing the
  1796. 1:06:10heinous attack yesterday.
1797. 1:06:13And to those who broke the law,
  1798. 1:06:16you will pay.
1799. 1:06:17You do not represent our movement. You
1800. 1:06:20do not represent our country. And if you
  1801. 1:06:22broke the law,
  1802. 1:06:24You can't say that. I'm not going to I
1803. 1:06:26you I already said you will pay. But
1804. 1:06:28this election is now over. Congress has
  1805. 1:06:31certified the results. I don't want to
1806. 1:06:33say the elections are over. I just want
  1807. 1:06:35to say
1808. 1:06:37Congress has certified the results
1809. 1:06:39without saying the elections are over,
  1810. 1:06:40okay?
  1811. 1:06:43Whatever your politics,
1812. 1:06:46whatever you think about the outcome of
  1813. 1:06:48the election,
1814. 1:06:51we as Americans must all agree on this.
  1815. 1:06:55Donald Trump's conduct on January 6th
1816. 1:07:01was a supreme violation of his oath of
1817. 1:07:05office and a complete dereliction of his
  1818. 1:07:09duty to our nation.
1819. 1:07:11It is a stain on our history.
1820. 1:07:15It is a dishonor to all those who have
1821. 1:07:18sacrificed and died in service of our
  1822. 1:07:21democracy.
  1823. 1:07:23Oaths matter.
  1824. 1:07:25Character matters.
  1825. 1:07:27Truth matters.
1826. 1:07:30If we do not renew our faith and
1827. 1:07:32commitment to these principles, this
1828. 1:07:34great experiment of ours, our shining
  1829. 1:07:37beacon on a hill,
  1830. 1:07:39will not endure.
1831. 1:07:42I yield to the gentlewoman from
  1832. 1:07:44Virginia.
  1833. 1:07:46Thank you very much, ma'am. I will
1834. 1:07:47definitely pass it on to him.
1835. 1:07:49Thank you so much for calling and
  1836. 1:07:50sharing. Have a wonderful day.
  1837. 1:07:52Bye.
  1838. 1:07:57Congressman Kinzinger's office, how can
  1839. 1:07:59I help you?
1840. 1:08:00Thank you very much. He'll be very He
1841. 1:08:02will really appreciate this. Thank you
1842. 1:08:03very much for sharing. I will definitely
  1843. 1:08:05pass it on.
1844. 1:08:07It was a big night. I'm glad we did it
  1845. 1:08:09primetime. I'm glad,
  1846. 1:08:11you know, it was a success.
1847. 1:08:13And and it's not about the entertainment
1848. 1:08:15value. It was about putting that story
1849. 1:08:17out in front of people like
1850. 1:08:20you had a guy that literally watched
1851. 1:08:22this happen and did nothing. And it's
1852. 1:08:25like we assume, living in the bubble of
  1853. 1:08:27DC,
1854. 1:08:29that people all knew that. They didn't.
1855. 1:08:32Cuz I was totally wrong about the
  1856. 1:08:33hearings. I thought that they weren't
  1857. 1:08:34going to go well. They're doing well. I
1858. 1:08:36was wrong. I am very convinced that
  1859. 1:08:39once, particularly Cassidy Hutchinson
  1860. 1:08:41came,
1861. 1:08:43we we have we have altered the course of
  1862. 1:08:45what the Justice Department's going to
  1863. 1:08:47do.
1864. 1:08:48You were seeming kind of happy.
1865. 1:08:50No, lies. You seemed kind of enjoying
1866. 1:08:52the McCarthy stuff. Is that just my
  1867. 1:08:54imagination?
1868. 1:08:55>> No, that was true. I enjoyed McCarthy
  1869. 1:08:57stuff.
1870. 1:08:58Look, the guy is like
1871. 1:09:02I think what the what hurts me a lot
1872. 1:09:04about McCarthy is that he and I were
  1873. 1:09:05friends.
1874. 1:09:07And that doesn't like hurt me personally
  1875. 1:09:09on that. I I've I can deal with it.
1876. 1:09:11But just to see the level of
1877. 1:09:14of complete groveling he has done and
1878. 1:09:18the damage he's done to our country uh
1879. 1:09:21is so disappointing. And it's just so
  1880. 1:09:23foreign to how I think. I mean, I'm not
1881. 1:09:25trying to sound like Jesus here, but it
1882. 1:09:27truly is just foreign to how I even
1883. 1:09:29think. And uh so yeah, when I can expose
  1884. 1:09:32that, it's fun.
1885. 1:09:37We're going to begin this morning with
1886. 1:09:38the latest on the midterm elections. I
1887. 1:09:39want to see this one.
  1888. 1:09:41What the [ __ ] is this thing? Okay. NBC
1889. 1:09:43News is projecting that Republicans will
1890. 1:09:46control the House for the next 2 years
1891. 1:09:48after winning enough seats to have a
  1892. 1:09:50majority in the chamber.
1893. 1:09:53Jay, with Republicans set to take
1894. 1:09:55control of the House, Kevin McCarthy
1895. 1:09:57appears [music] to be in line to take
1896. 1:09:58over as Speaker. So, what comes next for
1897. 1:10:01him and the party under his leadership?
1898. 1:10:03House Republicans have already said that
1899. 1:10:05they plan to dissolve the January 6th
  1900. 1:10:07Committee
1901. 1:10:08investigating the attack on the Capitol
1902. 1:10:10as it stands right now.
1903. 1:10:12Did you lose in that moment?
1904. 1:10:22Today's GOP agenda rollout by Leader
1905. 1:10:24McCarthy was an opportunity squandered
  1906. 1:10:27by his decision
1907. 1:10:29to once again bow to the MAGA crowd for
  1908. 1:10:32his own political gain.
1909. 1:10:34I I I'd say ask you just not to report
1910. 1:10:36this part before the hearing.
1911. 1:10:38I think we've proven our case. The the
1912. 1:10:41difficult part of where we're at now is
1913. 1:10:43wrapping this up, right? How do you cuz
  1914. 1:10:46there's still loose ends, but there's
1915. 1:10:47some loose ends that we just may not
1916. 1:10:48know that DOJ will have to try to track.
  1917. 1:10:51Right.
1918. 1:10:54Yeah, I mean, And was probably the
  1919. 1:10:55moment I lost. And now, you it's like
1920. 1:10:58kind of the end of the battle, but
  1921. 1:11:00where we sit today,
  1922. 1:11:02when I'm out of
  1923. 1:11:03the combat, let's call it, I've had the
1924. 1:11:06luxury to go back to the beginning
  1925. 1:11:08and play through it.
  1926. 1:11:11It's like always there's moments in
  1927. 1:11:13history where you're like, "Oh, if
  1928. 1:11:14something would have gone a little
  1929. 1:11:15different." And this is one that's
1930. 1:11:17haunted me of recent, which is
1931. 1:11:20after the impeachment vote, there was
1932. 1:11:22such a moment where nobody knew what was
  1933. 1:11:24going on. I think back to that, I'm
  1934. 1:11:26like, "Wait."
1935. 1:11:28There was that moment where had we taken
  1936. 1:11:30charge,
  1937. 1:11:32we might have won.
  1938. 1:11:35And I think it's just recently where I
  1939. 1:11:36kind of
1940. 1:11:37went back, put myself in that moment,
1941. 1:11:40and I'm like, "Could things have been
  1942. 1:11:41different?" I actually think they could
  1943. 1:11:43have been.
1944. 1:11:45You know, after the 10 of us voted to
  1945. 1:11:47impeach,
1946. 1:11:49I was trying to convince the other nine
1947. 1:11:51impeachers to expand out and basically
1948. 1:11:54take over for the Republican caucus, and
1949. 1:11:57I think we could have done it. Like that
1950. 1:11:59was a immense amount of moral authority.
  1951. 1:12:02Like, let's all join forces together.
1952. 1:12:04Let's say we're in charge here. Just
  1953. 1:12:07declaring we're in charge.
1954. 1:12:09We had this idea of being the
  1955. 1:12:11clearinghouse for downtown. Downtown
1956. 1:12:13being the code word for the PACs to give
  1957. 1:12:15the money.
  1958. 1:12:15>> America's biggest corporations are
  1959. 1:12:17backing away from politics
1960. 1:12:18>> Because these PACs all made the
  1961. 1:12:20announcement that they wouldn't support
1962. 1:12:22the people that voted against
1963. 1:12:24certifying the election. Marriott among
  1964. 1:12:26those turning off money to 147
  1965. 1:12:29Republicans who voted against
  1966. 1:12:31certification.
1967. 1:12:32>> suspend donations to members of Congress
  1968. 1:12:34who voted to overturn the U.S.
1969. 1:12:37>> question campaigns are asking themselves
1970. 1:12:39is how long is this going to last?
  1971. 1:12:42It lasted a whole year.
  1972. 1:12:43But
1973. 1:12:45you know, they made that decision. Had
1974. 1:12:47we then taken that decision matrix
1975. 1:12:50and said, "Okay, we will clear whether
  1976. 1:12:54somebody is pro-democracy or not. Kind
1977. 1:12:56of what Heritage Action does. They put
1978. 1:12:57out a scorecard. The 10 of us are going
  1979. 1:12:59to put out a scorecard. We're going to
1980. 1:13:00say Jim Jordan gets a zero for defending
1981. 1:13:02freedom. So all that money doesn't go to
  1982. 1:13:04him.
  1983. 1:13:04Toyota hears the 86 Republicans that
1984. 1:13:08have basically committed to the defense
  1985. 1:13:09of democracy. Toyota's like great. Let's
  1986. 1:13:12give them all checks.
1987. 1:13:14You could see a scenario where now all
1988. 1:13:16of a sudden people like trying to get on
  1989. 1:13:17our good side.
  1990. 1:13:19You know, $300,000 raise is the
  1991. 1:13:21difference between I support democracy
  1992. 1:13:23and I don't. They're going to start
  1993. 1:13:24openly supporting democracy.
1994. 1:13:26Then it actually becomes you take full
1995. 1:13:29accountability of what happened on
  1996. 1:13:30January 6th.
1997. 1:13:32You have a mea culpa to the American
1998. 1:13:33people. Look, we were wrong. People lied
1999. 1:13:36to you about this. The election was
2000. 1:13:38legitimate. And by the way,
2001. 1:13:41here is our agenda now for the future.
2002. 1:13:42Here is how we're going to focus on
  2003. 1:13:44uniting people.
2004. 1:13:45Yeah, you would have half of the party
2005. 1:13:47upset cuz they still got a little bit of
2006. 1:13:49thing for Donald Trump, but that
2007. 1:13:50dissipates. In order for somebody to
2008. 1:13:53hero worship somebody, you have to
2009. 1:13:54basically keep feeding them material.
2010. 1:13:57For at least three or four weeks, he he
  2011. 1:13:58didn't say a word.
2012. 1:14:00And that would have been all us.
2013. 1:14:03Now you have actually a constant steady
2014. 1:14:05stream of a positive agenda. The deniers
2015. 1:14:09of what happened on January 6th are
2016. 1:14:11outnumbered by the people that say,
2017. 1:14:12here's the truth of what happened.
2018. 1:14:15But the people that also voted to
  2019. 1:14:16impeach,
2020. 1:14:18they just kind of went silent.
  2021. 1:14:21We missed a historic opportunity, a
2022. 1:14:23historic opportunity to at least make an
  2023. 1:14:26effort
2024. 1:14:27to overthrow McCarthy, to change the
2025. 1:14:30future of that party, and instead we had
2026. 1:14:31silence for 3 weeks, and in that vacuum
  2027. 1:14:34McCarthy goes to Mar-a-Lago.
2028. 1:14:45So where are we going?
2029. 1:14:47So this is the departing member center.
  2030. 1:14:50Uh
2031. 1:14:51It's where offices go to die.
  2032. 1:14:55Uh not actually.
2033. 1:14:57Every departing member, this is the
2034. 1:14:58office that they get for the lame duck
  2035. 1:15:00session,
2036. 1:15:01um which is the session in between
2037. 1:15:03Thanksgiving and the new year and when
2038. 1:15:04the new Congress is sworn in, which is
  2039. 1:15:06what we're in right now.
2040. 1:15:09Yeah, so this is our this is our space.
2041. 1:15:11This is our this is our cubicle.
  2042. 1:15:15This is the cubicle.
2043. 1:15:17This is where Adam goes. No.
2044. 1:15:21The congressman will not be sitting
  2045. 1:15:22here. What? No.
  2046. 1:15:25No, he'll be We have a special We got a
2047. 1:15:28space on the third floor.
  2048. 1:15:30Yeah.
2049. 1:15:31Speaker Pelosi was kind enough to give
  2050. 1:15:33us the office, so we're lucky.
2051. 1:15:39Isn't this cool? We're in this little
  2052. 1:15:40tiny place.
2053. 1:15:42From the speaker? Yeah. Someone in your
2054. 1:15:44party has some privileges, huh?
2055. 1:15:47I I want to get a clip of what Senator
2056. 1:15:50Durbin sent over as his holiday gift.
  2057. 1:15:54So, wait.
2058. 1:15:56So, wait, is that it?
  2059. 1:15:58Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were
2060. 1:15:59setting me up for something cool.
  2061. 1:16:00[laughter]
2062. 1:16:00It's like nice of him to send a gift,
  2063. 1:16:02but dude,
  2064. 1:16:04like that's really tiny.
  2065. 1:16:07>> [laughter]
2066. 1:16:09>> They made a big deal about delivering it
  2067. 1:16:10to us. Of course, I didn't send anybody
2068. 1:16:12gifts, so whatever. Yeah, but you put
2069. 1:16:13your career on the line.
2070. 1:16:14>> Yeah. What did you get?
2071. 1:16:16>> And I get popcorn for it.
2072. 1:16:19Like come on, man. Give me something
  2073. 1:16:21better than that.
  2074. 1:16:23Give me a tin of popcorn.
2075. 1:16:28Oh, well. It's one less thing I have to
  2076. 1:16:29take home. Yeah.
  2077. 1:16:31Yeah.
  2078. 1:16:46>> I remember I I missed my very first vote
  2079. 1:16:48in Congress
2080. 1:16:50because I thought we could just come
  2081. 1:16:52back to the office.
2082. 1:16:54That doesn't seem like that long ago.
  2083. 1:16:57But that was 12 years.
  2084. 1:17:00I didn't imagine that January 6th would
2085. 1:17:02be the thing that would
  2086. 1:17:04cost me.
  2087. 1:17:10All right, ready? I'm ready. Mr.
  2088. 1:17:12Speaker, it's with great pride that I
2089. 1:17:14rise today to lead this special order.
2090. 1:17:17For the half hour, my colleagues will
2091. 1:17:19join me to reflect on their time serving
2092. 1:17:21the American [music] people and the US
  2093. 1:17:22Constitution.
2094. 1:17:24These members who swore and upheld their
2095. 1:17:26oath of office will be remembered by
  2096. 1:17:28history as patriots
  2097. 1:17:29>> [music]
2098. 1:17:29>> who placed their country over party.
2099. 1:17:32I move that the committee favorably
2100. 1:17:34report to the house the select
  2101. 1:17:36committee's final report
  2102. 1:17:38which includes the committee's
  2103. 1:17:39legislative recommendations
  2104. 1:17:41and criminal referrals of Donald J.
  2105. 1:17:43Trump and others.
2106. 1:17:47Returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom
  2107. 1:17:48and Operation Enduring Freedom, I ran
  2108. 1:17:51for Congress and won.
  2109. 1:17:52While at the time I didn't have a
2110. 1:17:54family, I promised myself to leave them
2111. 1:17:57a better country than the one I
  2112. 1:17:58inherited I inherited.
  2113. 1:18:00Unfortunately, Mr. Speaker, I cannot in
  2114. 1:18:03good conscience
  2115. 1:18:04say that I have done that.
2116. 1:18:07Had I known that standing up for truth
2117. 1:18:09would cost me my job,
  2118. 1:18:11friendships,
2119. 1:18:13and even my personal security,
  2120. 1:18:15I would,
  2121. 1:18:16without hesitation,
2122. 1:18:18do it all over again.
2123. 1:18:21And even though my time in Congress is
2124. 1:18:22coming to an end, I stand here renewing
2125. 1:18:25that promise I made over a decade ago to
2126. 1:18:28leave this country a far better place
  2127. 1:18:30than the one I inherited.
2128. 1:18:32Not only for my son, Christian,
2129. 1:18:34but also for future generations.
2130. 1:18:39Ms. Cheney? Aye. Ms. Lofgren? Aye. Mr.
  2131. 1:18:43Schiff?
2132. 1:18:44Aye. Mr. Aguilar? Aye. Ms. Murphy? Aye.
2133. 1:18:48Ms. Luria? [music] Aye. Mr. Raskin? Aye.
  2134. 1:18:52Mr. Kinzinger? Kinzinger, aye.
2135. 1:18:54Mr. Chairman, you are not recorded.
  2136. 1:18:57Chair votes aye.
2137. 1:19:01And last but not least, I need to thank
2138. 1:19:02my staff, both past and present. [music]
2139. 1:19:04They have become like family, and I will
2140. 1:19:06never forget the work that they've done
2141. 1:19:08in service to me and in service to their
  2142. 1:19:09nation.
2143. 1:19:12How long did that go? 11 minutes.
2144. 1:19:14Yeah, what did you think it was, 7?
2145. 1:19:18The Select Committee stands adjourned.
2146. 1:19:35It's been like the longest goodbye, you
  2147. 1:19:37know, it's been months where I know I'm
  2148. 1:19:38leaving.
  2149. 1:19:43You can
2150. 1:19:44mourn about it whenever you want, but
2151. 1:19:50right now I'm in the mode of like
2152. 1:19:52just get out of [music] here.
2153. 1:20:01What the hell's going on? My car sucks.
  2154. 1:20:03It's out of juice.
  2155. 1:20:27It's crazy.
2156. 1:20:28It's the things and actions that he
  2157. 1:20:30committed.
  2158. 1:20:37See you fellas.
  2159. 1:21:13Any courage I showed just comes from I I
2160. 1:21:15think saying I always want to be able to
2161. 1:21:17look at myself in the mirror. You know,
  2162. 1:21:19I had a situation in Milwaukee,
2163. 1:21:20obviously, where guy was killing his
  2164. 1:21:22girlfriend, and I don't know if I'd ever
2165. 1:21:24make that decision again, but at the
2166. 1:21:25time I made the decision to stop it.
2167. 1:21:27You know, going to war, well, millions
2168. 1:21:29of people make those decisions every
  2169. 1:21:31day, but
2170. 1:21:33in terms of the politics of it,
  2171. 1:21:35I I really don't believe what I did was
  2172. 1:21:37courageous. I think it's just I'm
  2173. 1:21:39surrounded by cowardice.
  2174. 1:21:42They don't know it's cowardice, but it
2175. 1:21:44is. So, then when somebody, me or Liz
  2176. 1:21:46Cheney, speaks out
2177. 1:21:49in the absence of other people doing
2178. 1:21:50what their basic job is,
  2179. 1:21:52it appears like courage.
2180. 1:21:54Okay, I agree. You and Liz were just
2181. 1:21:56doing your job, and everyone who didn't
2182. 1:21:57was a coward. But, you know, what
2183. 1:22:00happened in Milwaukee, what happened
  2184. 1:22:01there?
  2185. 1:22:03That was courageous.
  2186. 1:22:05I I didn't I didn't make the conscious
2187. 1:22:07decision to do something. It was like
2188. 1:22:10I guess how I'd been trained to an
2189. 1:22:11extent in terms of how to think,
  2190. 1:22:15what I believed my moral priorities
  2191. 1:22:17were,
2192. 1:22:18that brief second of like what's the
2193. 1:22:20rest of my life going to look like from
  2194. 1:22:22this.
  2195. 1:22:23I made the right decision, a decision I
  2196. 1:22:25shouldn't have made because
2197. 1:22:27I should have died. Never fight anybody
  2198. 1:22:29with a knife.
2199. 1:22:32But when you make a decision that
2200. 1:22:35you to give your life up
  2201. 1:22:44Yeah, I think
2202. 1:22:46when you make a decision to give your
  2203. 1:22:48life up for a stranger
2204. 1:22:55I mean, how can't that change you?
  2205. 1:23:00And I hope
  2206. 1:23:02I hope I'm never
2207. 1:23:03I never want to do that again and I hope
  2208. 1:23:06that
2209. 1:23:07I don't know if anything if that ever
  2210. 1:23:09happened again to me.
2211. 1:23:11I'm not sure I'd make the same decision.
2212. 1:23:17I met her later, like a year later and
  2213. 1:23:20uh
  2214. 1:23:21I don't know.
2215. 1:23:22What what can you say about that except
  2216. 1:23:25it it's a it's an honor to have been at
2217. 1:23:27that to be able to act.
2218. 1:23:30And yet it's like this creeping cynicism
2219. 1:23:34after like the January 6 stuff of
2220. 1:23:39why would you try to defend these
  2221. 1:23:40people, right? Like they're
2222. 1:23:43they hate you. They want to kill you,
  2223. 1:23:45right? Everybody's self-centered.
  2224. 1:23:48And I think that's
2225. 1:23:50I that's the fight now of my next part
  2226. 1:23:54of life is
  2227. 1:23:56fighting against that cynicism
  2228. 1:24:00because
2229. 1:24:02I don't want in the second half of my
  2230. 1:24:04life
2231. 1:24:05to not be willing to put my life on the
  2232. 1:24:07line for people.
  2233. 1:24:09Um
  2234. 1:24:11even MAGA people.
  2235. 1:24:12Yeah, even MAGA people.
2236. 1:24:14Maybe especially them because they need
2237. 1:24:18they need they need some
  2238. 1:24:20I don't know, some inspiration or
  2239. 1:24:21something that they're not getting,
2240. 1:24:22they're being lied to and abused, but
2241. 1:24:24that's the fight of the second part of
  2242. 1:24:25my life.
2243. 1:24:27Is making sure I can keep my head above
2244. 1:24:29water and find that again, find that
  2245. 1:24:31inspiration again.
  2246. 1:24:33>> [snorts]
2247. 1:24:33>> You just probably need a little break
  2248. 1:24:34first, huh?
  2249. 1:24:37I'm good.
2250. 1:24:44All right, well, thank you, brother.
  2251. 1:24:45Yeah, dude.
2252. 1:24:48Listen, if this documentary helps you
2253. 1:24:50win the presidency and you enact
  2254. 1:24:51horrible conservative policies, I swear
  2255. 1:24:53to [ __ ] god.
2256. 1:24:54>> Oh, I will call my first horrible policy
2257. 1:24:58the Steve Pink Conservative Future Bill.
2258. 1:25:09I got this. I got this. I got this
  2259. 1:25:12feeling.
  2260. 1:25:13It's all right.
  2261. 1:25:15Out of sight.
2262. 1:25:18I got this. I got this. I got this
  2263. 1:25:20feeling.
  2264. 1:25:22It's all right.
  2265. 1:25:23Yeah.
  2266. 1:25:24Yeah.

  2268. 1:25:27Yeah.

  2270. 1:25:33Show me the
  2271. 1:25:39Hulk. Hulk.
2272. 1:25:42I got this. I got this. I got this
  2273. 1:25:45feeling.
  2274. 1:25:46It's all right.
  2275. 1:25:48Yeah.
  2276. 1:25:49Yeah.
  2277. 1:25:51When I'm with you,
  2278. 1:25:53it's always
  2279. 1:25:55sunshine.
  2280. 1:25:59Yeah.
  2281. 1:26:01Oh, yeah.
  2282. 1:26:02Oh, yeah.
  2283. 1:26:03Good times. Oh, yeah.
2284. 1:27:35>> Uh can I have a thing of water, too,
  2285. 1:27:36please?
2286. 1:27:37Oh, you got me a bottle of water. Thank
2287. 1:27:39you. Thank you, Kyle. Um
2288. 1:27:41Whatever you guys get or don't get for
2289. 1:27:43Steve, whatever shortens the amount of
  2290. 1:27:45time we're talking, do that.
