- 0:04Hello, welcome back. This is now your
- 0:08video on assignment three, which is
- 0:11called the learner profile project, also
- 0:13known as the LPP.
- 0:16Now, this is an assignment that you're
- 0:17going to be doing when you get here in
- 0:19Madrid. However, it's imperative that
- 0:22you watch this video and all the other
- 0:25videos in this section to understand the
- 0:28different parts of this project. When
- 0:30you arrive in Madrid, we will have time
- 0:33for a quick review. And in the second
- 0:35week, we'll do a little bit of a review
- 0:37again just to keep you on track. But
- 0:40overall, there will be no time for any
- 0:42new briefs uh in the course. So, it's
- 0:45very important that you watch these
- 0:47videos so that you can um have a clear
- 0:49idea of what to expect. Now, I'm sure
- 0:52you will have some uh questions about it
- 0:55by the time you've watched all the
- 0:56videos. So, that's no problem at all.
- 0:58Just make a note of them and we'll go
- 1:00through and make sure that everybody's
- 1:02up to date when you get here.
- 1:05So the aim of this assignment is to
- 1:07analyze a student's current level of
- 1:09English by carrying out various analyses
- 1:12of their reading, writing, listening and
- 1:14speaking skills, which by now you know
- 1:18are the four main skills to teaching and
- 1:21learning English um from the students
- 1:23perspective.
- 1:25Now analyzing a student's current level
- 1:27of English is something that you're
- 1:29going to be asked to do a lot when
- 1:30you're a TEFL teacher. you're going to
- 1:33be able to you're going to need to be
- 1:35able to analyze a level of your students
- 1:38whether it's in a group for a class for
- 1:41an interview um for a test of some sort.
- 1:45Um and so it's going to be very
- 1:46important that you understand how to do
- 1:48that. So this assignment is not just
- 1:51about doing something for the course. is
- 1:53actually here to help you uh really gain
- 1:57some experience of analyzing at students
- 1:59level and uh all the documents and all
- 2:02the forms that you create in this
- 2:05analysis or sorry in this assignment
- 2:07you'll be able to use going forward as a
- 2:09TEFL teacher um for any future analyses.
- 2:13So this is a big project and the reason
- 2:16why you're looking at the information
- 2:17now is so that you can kick off when you
- 2:20get here and spend the two weeks uh that
- 2:22you're here on the course working on it.
- 2:25So overall there are nine analyses to be
- 2:28completed some of which have a bigger
- 2:30waiting than others as follows.
- 2:33As you can see the learner background
- 2:36has less workload. Uh but the course
- 2:39plan towards the end of the project has
- 2:41a lot more of the workload. So the
- 2:44analyses themselves will be the learner
- 2:46background information, a reading skills
- 2:48analysis, a listening skills analysis, a
- 2:51writing skills analysis, creation of a
- 2:53needs analysis document, creation of an
- 2:56oral level test for the speaking skills,
- 2:59a phonetic analysis, a summary of your
- 3:01students four skills, plus their overall
- 3:04level that you're giving them, and the
- 3:06creation of a short course plan allowing
- 3:09them to see how they can improve their
- 3:12English. So, it's a big project, but
- 3:14it's an exciting project and it's really
- 3:16detailed and will be very useful for you
- 3:19going forward.
- 3:21You'll be able to come back to this
- 3:22video and watch it in your own time. So,
- 3:24this will be useful for you once you are
- 3:26here and you need a quick review, but
- 3:29you'll be able to see on the on the
- 3:31right that there's a list of videos that
- 3:34you'll be needing to be able to complete
- 3:36each analysis. The first three where you
- 3:39see video reading and listening skills,
- 3:42the skills of video error and correction
- 3:43one, these are related to the videos
- 3:46that you've already seen in the online
- 3:48tasks. The ones below it are the videos
- 3:52that you will find in this section on
- 3:53the needs analysis, the oral level test,
- 3:55writing up the analysis, and the course
- 3:57plans. So, who will be your profile?
- 4:00Well, you will be introduced to a
- 4:02non-native English speaker who has
- 4:04volunteered to help you with this
- 4:06project in their own time. Usually,
- 4:09we're able to provide somebody that we
- 4:11know. However, if you do know somebody
- 4:13yourself, feel free to reach out to them
- 4:16and ask them if they would be happy to
- 4:17volunteer.
- 4:19This could be a friend of the family. It
- 4:21could be a colleague that you've worked
- 4:24with before. It could be a flatmate that
- 4:27you've met, a landlord of your
- 4:28apartment. Who knows? It doesn't matter.
- 4:31But if you know a non-native English
- 4:33speaker who might be interested in
- 4:34taking part and practicing their
- 4:36English, please reach out to them and
- 4:39and ask them. If not, we will be able to
- 4:42provide you with a student.
- 4:45Whether your student is ours or someone
- 4:47you know, you must make them must they
- 4:49must be between an A2 and C1 level. So
- 4:52this means that they mustn't be complete
- 4:54beginners 0 A1 because it'll be far too
- 4:57difficult for them to participate. But
- 4:59we also don't want a C2 level. So
- 5:01proficient speaker otherwise you won't
- 5:03be able to find any errors or any areas
- 5:05for development.
- 5:07They must also be available in the
- 5:09evenings and or the weekend to
- 5:11participate which we always ask our
- 5:13students to be. So make sure that you
- 5:16check that out if it's someone that you
- 5:17know. Basically this project will take
- 5:20place outside of school hours and so in
- 5:22your time with us you will not have time
- 5:24to work on this project. So it'll be
- 5:26done in your own time and therefore your
- 5:29person must be available in their own
- 5:31time as well. Overall you're going to
- 5:34have one meeting with them which could
- 5:36take around one and a half hours to
- 5:38complete. It can be online or in person.
- 5:41That is entirely up to you and up to the
- 5:43student to arrange.
- 5:45These arrange by no later than the end
- 5:47of Thursday, week two. Um that's because
- 5:51you will have a little bit of time after
- 5:52that to complete your project. and do
- 5:56not have any meetings much later than
- 5:58that. It will cause unnecessary stress
- 6:00and workload for you at the end of the
- 6:02course.
- 6:04It's very important that you speak
- 6:05English the whole time you are
- 6:07conducting the meetings. Let them
- 6:08practice. But this should also include
- 6:10when you're communicating with them
- 6:12beforehand, whether that it's on
- 6:14WhatsApp, an email, by phone, etc. Let
- 6:18them practice. That's why they
- 6:19volunteered to to to to come and do the
- 6:23project with you.
- 6:25So the key to this this project is
- 6:27staying organized. So to help you
- 6:29understand the time scales you should
- 6:31work to here's a breakdown of what you
- 6:33need to collect and do during the
- 6:35meeting. So you'll need to prepare some
- 6:38questions to ask your profile to help
- 6:40you get some information to write the
- 6:42learner background introduction.
- 6:45This will form part of your analysis at
- 6:47the end of the project. So good
- 6:49questions here to ask your profile in
- 6:52the meeting whether it's face to face or
- 6:53online are things like tell me about
- 6:56your family and tell me about your your
- 6:59culture. They could be from Madrid, they
- 7:01might be from somewhere else in Spain,
- 7:03they might be from somewhere else
- 7:04outside of Spain. Um you want to find
- 7:07out a little bit about their uh history
- 7:10of learning English and what um what
- 7:13they believe their strengths and
- 7:14weaknesses are when it comes to English.
- 7:16Most people would say that their
- 7:19strengths are writing or reading as
- 7:21these are the passive skills and
- 7:23speaking could be the most challenging
- 7:25for them.
- 7:27Ahead of the meeting, you're going to
- 7:28prepare a reading activity and you can
- 7:30use one of an activity from one of our
- 7:32books in the library or online library
- 7:35or anywhere that you can find online.
- 7:37And you'll provide the activity with six
- 7:39comprehension questions. So, what we're
- 7:42really looking for here are questions
- 7:45related to them understanding the
- 7:47meaning of what they've just read. So,
- 7:50if there are lots of facts and data in
- 7:52the reading and we ask them the question
- 7:55about facts and data, this doesn't
- 7:57really get them to comprehend. This
- 7:59could just be copying information. So,
- 8:01we really want comprehension questions
- 8:03that perhaps what happened, why did it
- 8:05happen, what was the reason for this,
- 8:08why was that decision made, etc.
- 8:11We're also going to ask you to prepare a
- 8:13listening activity. You could be able to
- 8:15source this yourself, looking for audios
- 8:17or videos appropriate for the level on
- 8:20the internet, for example, as a great
- 8:22place to to search. And you'll also need
- 8:25to provide your student with a worksheet
- 8:28uh six comprehension questions. Again,
- 8:30making sure that the questions checking
- 8:33their comprehension of the content of
- 8:35the listening activity.
- 8:37You'll prepare a topic to write about
- 8:39for the essay. Now, the essay must be
- 8:43handwritten. Even if this is an online
- 8:46meeting, you will need to ask them to
- 8:48handr write whatever the topic is that
- 8:49you want on their own note paper and
- 8:52then send you a photo, for example. If
- 8:54that's the case, we need them to write
- 8:57at least six lines. Okay? That means
- 9:00that sufficient information for you to
- 9:02be able to correct uh any mistakes.
- 9:05Please don't ask them only to write six
- 9:07lines. Just encourage them to write and
- 9:10if it seems like less than six,
- 9:12encourage them to write some more.
- 9:15We also ask where possible that you get
- 9:17them to write on alternative lines. So
- 9:20if you imagine a notepad all lined out,
- 9:23then just ask them to write on every
- 9:25other line. Basically that will give you
- 9:27some space as the teacher to make any
- 9:30alterations or note your key correction
- 9:32code under any errors that they make.
- 9:35It's not, you know, it's not, it's not
- 9:37mandatory. If they don't do it, it's no
- 9:38problem. It just will be useful for you.
- 9:40So, do encourage it.
- 9:43Now, what we want is all of these
- 9:44activities to be based on a different
- 9:46topic to ensure that your student is
- 9:49practicing and using a wide range of
- 9:52vocabulary and grammar during the
- 9:54activities. So, for example, the reading
- 9:56activity could be something about
- 9:58holidays, the listening activity could
- 10:00be something about sports, and the topic
- 10:03could be something about health and
- 10:05fitness. This just helps your student
- 10:08practice a lot more than they would if
- 10:11all the topics were the same. So, two
- 10:13other things that you'll need to prepare
- 10:15for your meeting. One will be to design
- 10:17a needs analysis document, and the other
- 10:19will be to design the oral level test.
- 10:21Now the content for understanding
- 10:23exactly what's needed in these are in
- 10:26the videos that follow uh in this
- 10:28section. You must watch these before you
- 10:31attend uh to the course in Madrid. Both
- 10:33of them probably around 25 minutes of
- 10:36video literally talking to you about
- 10:38what those documents are and how to
- 10:41create them. Now preparation for the
- 10:44meeting and the meeting itself will be
- 10:45done in your own time. As I mentioned
- 10:47before, you're very welcome to use the
- 10:50school and some meeting rooms in the
- 10:52school to do that. Um, as this is a a
- 10:54good safe place for you to um, bring a
- 10:57student, but the school is open until
- 10:59900 p.m. Monday to Thursday and until
- 11:026:00 p.m. on Fridays. You will be
- 11:04finishing around 6 Monday to Thursdays
- 11:08and usually around 2:00 on Fridays.
- 11:12So once you've prepared all of the
- 11:14documents, you will have got in contact
- 11:16with the person that we've either
- 11:18assigned to you or you have found and
- 11:20agreed a meeting date. The next step of
- 11:22course then is to actually have the
- 11:24meeting itself.
- 11:26So here are the points just as a
- 11:28reminder that you need to go through
- 11:30having prepared all the information to
- 11:32actually have the meeting. So you're
- 11:34going to interview your profile using
- 11:37the background information questions
- 11:39that you actually prepared. You'll need
- 11:41to record this particular part as you'll
- 11:43find it useful for your phonetics
- 11:45analysis much later down the line. So it
- 11:48can be a recording of an audio only. If
- 11:50it's an online meeting, you can record
- 11:51the meeting. You'll give your profile
- 11:54the activities that you've prepared
- 11:56which will include the listening
- 11:58activity and six comprehension
- 12:00questions, the reading and the writing
- 12:02activity with a topic for them to write.
- 12:04You just do give these one at a time.
- 12:07instruct and model what you want them to
- 12:09do as you go through each activity.
- 12:13Whilst they complete these activities,
- 12:15do observe them um and see how they are
- 12:18doing. See whether they look as if or
- 12:21seem as if that the activities are easy
- 12:23for them, challenging for them. You
- 12:26know, did they ask any questions? Did
- 12:28they make any particular um facial
- 12:31expressions that gave away whether they
- 12:33were sort of finding it difficult or
- 12:34particularly easy? Did they make notes
- 12:36as they went through? Did they um
- 12:39underline uh questions in the reading?
- 12:42You're really just observing here how
- 12:44they're doing and how the activity went
- 12:46as you'll need this for your analysis.
- 12:50Okay. You after that you're going to
- 12:51carry out the oral level test with your
- 12:53profile as per the videos and you'll
- 12:56mark the test sheet accordingly to their
- 12:58ability to answer the questions. You'll
- 13:00be doing that in the meeting and you
- 13:02must record this part as well. So this
- 13:06is the second speaking part that you
- 13:08record and you'll use that for your
- 13:10phenology analysis later. Once all the
- 13:13activities are done, give your profile
- 13:15their needs analysis document and ask
- 13:17them to complete it whilst they are with
- 13:19you.
- 13:21Then at the end of the meeting,
- 13:22obviously thank them for their time and
- 13:24for volunteering and and say you hope
- 13:27that they've enjoyed the activities. Um,
- 13:29make sure you retain all of the original
- 13:31worksheets and the answer sheets and
- 13:33keep the recordings for the analysis.
- 13:36You'll need to submit everything as part
- 13:37of your assignment once you have written
- 13:40up all of your details. Now, you may
- 13:43want to tell the students as well that
- 13:44you'll get back to them. Uh, let them
- 13:46know what level you've decided. Um, you
- 13:49can always send them um the summary of
- 13:51your analysis and the level um as part
- 13:54of that project. I'm sure they'll be
- 13:56very pleased to receive that from you.
- 13:59So once you're here in Madrid, we'll let
- 14:02you have the template that you'll be
- 14:04using to go through your analyses.
- 14:06That's the actual writing of the the
- 14:08documents. So you don't need to have
- 14:10access to any of that now. Um and you'll
- 14:12use the template to complete all of the
- 14:15uh assignments and you'll be attaching
- 14:17extra documents to the pack once you've
- 14:20actually go to submit it.
- 14:23So, this assignment is actually due to
- 14:25be submitted at 9:00 on Wednesday, week
- 14:28three. So, you'll finish in two weeks on
- 14:31the course and we're giving you until
- 14:32the following Wednesday morning to
- 14:34submit the assignment. So, we're giving
- 14:36you some extra time after the course to
- 14:39submit it. If you wish to submit it
- 14:41earlier than that, please do so. It's no
- 14:43problem at all. You have the extra time
- 14:45to get that done. So, all of the videos
- 14:47you're going to be watching in this
- 14:49section and the grading criteria will be
- 14:51made available again to you in the
- 14:53Google classroom that you'll have when
- 14:55you get here uh in Madrid. You'll be
- 14:58asked to submit one full assignment, a
- 15:00digital document. And as the project is
- 15:03big, it does require all nine individual
- 15:05parts to be achieved to get your pass
- 15:08grade. So, as you're checking through um
- 15:12your assignment once you're here, make
- 15:14sure to check the content and grading
- 15:16grading criteria for each analysis to be
- 15:18made available to you to make sure that
- 15:20you are ticking off all the boxes you
- 15:22need to ensure that you've completed the
- 15:25project in time. So, please make sure to
- 15:28watch the next videos. You've got the
- 15:30needs analysis, the O level test, and
- 15:33the course plans to watch this point.
- 15:36See you soon.
