9 WASTE OF MONEY Autumn Fashion Items (I Regret Buying These!) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00There is something about autumn fashion
- 0:02that just reels me in. The colors, the
- 0:05textures, the coziness of autumn. I
- 0:08always feel like I just want to reset my
- 0:11whole wardrobe at this point of the year
- 0:13and buy lots of new things. But over the
- 0:15years, I've realized that the pieces I
- 0:17felt most excited to buy were ones that
- 0:21were the first to go. So, in this video,
- 0:24I'm sharing some of the things that I
- 0:25wish I never bought so that hopefully
- 0:28you can learn from my mistakes, shop
- 0:31more mindfully, and build a wardrobe
- 0:33that you'll actually love for this
- 0:34season and beyond. Knitwear that snags
- 0:37easily. You know, that really fine gauge
- 0:40knitwear that looks so beautiful on the
- 0:43hanger or it looks absolutely gorgeous
- 0:45on the model online. The kind that has
- 0:47that soft drapey finish. It's a little
- 0:50bit sheer and it just has this beautiful
- 0:54elegance about it. Well, I've bought
- 0:56that kind of knitwear more than once and
- 0:59I can tell you that the only reason it
- 1:02looks that good is because it just
- 1:04hasn't been worn yet. The reality is
- 1:06these ultra fine knits are just so
- 1:09delicate to wear. As soon as you start
- 1:11living your life, you put a bag on your
- 1:13shoulder, you put some jewelry on, you
- 1:16accidentally scrape against the wall,
- 1:19your knit is going to snag. It could
- 1:22just be a quick brush against a handbag.
- 1:25It could even be your own dry skin on
- 1:27your hands. It's happened to me before,
- 1:30so I can tell you it happens. One tiny
- 1:33pull and immediately this knit looks
- 1:36completely ruined. And it's not just
- 1:38about the knit being delicate. I've
- 1:41realized that so much about style and
- 1:43fashion isn't about the piece itself,
- 1:46but it's about how you feel when you're
- 1:48wearing it. And if you are wearing
- 1:50something that you are constantly scared
- 1:52that you are going to snag, you're not
- 1:55going to be able to just go confidently
- 1:57about your life, your clothes are going
- 1:59to be restricting you from just living.
- 2:03And there's nothing effortless about
- 2:05that. When I was younger, I used to
- 2:07think that's just like the price you
- 2:08paid, you know, for a nice piece. But
- 2:11actually, as I get older, I want my
- 2:14clothes to work with my life, not
- 2:16against it. A few tips. If I can see the
- 2:19outline of my hand when I hold the knit
- 2:21up against the light, then it's probably
- 2:24going to be very thin and delicate. And
- 2:27if it feels slippery or, you know, even
- 2:29overly smooth, then that's also another
- 2:32sign that it's probably going to be very
- 2:34fragile. Instead, I still look for knits
- 2:36that feel refined, but they have a bit
- 2:39more weight to them and a little bit
- 2:41more texture. I also look for ones that
- 2:43have a slightly tighter weave and aren't
- 2:45so open in the way it's been knit. These
- 2:48kinds of pieces still look elevated, but
- 2:51they'll last you a lot longer. On the
- 2:53topic of knitwear, one shape that I know
- 2:57I have to steer clear from is a bell
- 3:00sleeve. Firstly, as someone who is
- 3:03petite, I'm 5'2, it just drowns me. The
- 3:07proportion of a bell sleeve just
- 3:09completely throws me off. Instead of
- 3:11looking relaxed or elegant, I end up
- 3:14just looking like I've been swallowed by
- 3:16fabric. But more than that, bell sleeves
- 3:19are just kind of annoying. They're
- 3:21really beautiful in theory, but in
- 3:24practice for everyday life, they just
- 3:26get in the way. Autumn, as we know, is
- 3:29all about layering, and it's impossible
- 3:31to layer a coat over something with such
- 3:34a big bell sleeve. The sleeve ends up
- 3:37bunching up around your wrist, and
- 3:39everything feels tight and bulky and
- 3:41awkward. It's just not a good look. And
- 3:44let's not even get into reaching over a
- 3:47dinner table or washing your hands. I
- 3:49have dipped my sleeve into food more
- 3:52times than I care to admit. It's one of
- 3:55those shapes that looks great, but for
- 3:57day-to-day life, it's just frustrating.
- 4:00So, now I know that I need to make sure
- 4:02I look for knitwear that have more
- 4:04simple sleeves. They're easier to layer
- 4:06and just easier to live your life in. On
- 4:09the flip side of jumpers that are hard
- 4:11to layer on top, what about jackets that
- 4:14are hard to layer under? I recently
- 4:17tried the MAC coat from Everane. I've
- 4:20heard so many good things about it. The
- 4:22reviews on the website on it are amazing
- 4:25and actually quite a few of you even
- 4:27recommended it to me in my comments as
- 4:29well. So, needless to say, I was very
- 4:31excited to try it out. I ordered two
- 4:32sizes. So, I ordered the extra small and
- 4:34the small. With the extra small, I
- 4:36thought it looked absolutely beautiful
- 4:38on, very clean and tailored and minimal.
- 4:41But the moment I start to move my arms
- 4:44or I try to layer even a thin knit
- 4:47underneath, it felt really tight around
- 4:50the armpits and the shoulders. And then
- 4:52with the small, I felt like it was
- 4:55better in terms of, you know, having a
- 4:58bit more room under my arms and my
- 4:59shoulders. But then I also kind of felt
- 5:03like it overwhelmed my frame a little
- 5:05bit and it lost that sort of sharpness
- 5:08and structure that I really liked in the
- 5:10smaller size. And like here's the thing,
- 5:13if my funds were unlimited, then I
- 5:16probably would keep the extra small
- 5:18because I do really like how it looks
- 5:20and I could wear this on days when I
- 5:22only need, you know, that really thin
- 5:25layer. But if I'm realistic with my
- 5:27wants and my needs, I want a jacket that
- 5:31I can wear for, you know, a longer
- 5:34period of time than just a t-shirt and
- 5:37then that jacket on top. Because when
- 5:38you can only wear something for like a
- 5:40very tiny sliver of time, I do feel like
- 5:45it ends up being a little bit wasteful
- 5:48most of the time. Let's talk about a
- 5:49faux fur because I think it is an autumn
- 5:53winter 2025 trend which means it's going
- 5:56to be everywhere. A faux fur coat might
- 5:59look soft and luxurious when you first
- 6:02get it. But let's not forget that most
- 6:05faux fur, especially the ones on the
- 6:07high street, are essentially made of
- 6:10plastic. It doesn't breathe. It doesn't
- 6:12regulate your temperature, and you're
- 6:15just going to trap all the heat in. and
- 6:17you're going to sweat in it and it's
- 6:19just not going to be a comfortable thing
- 6:21to wear. It won't keep you warm in the
- 6:23same way that something like a wool coat
- 6:26will. And most of the faux fur on the
- 6:28high street when you really look at it
- 6:30up close and not just shop online
- 6:33doesn't look that great either. It can
- 6:35look very shiny or stiff or even overly
- 6:38fluffy in a way that is going to shed
- 6:41everywhere. And that artificial texture
- 6:43is really hard to style without
- 6:46cheapening the rest of your outfit. I'm
- 6:48sorry. I'm just going to say it. It
- 6:50looks cheap. And let's say you do find
- 6:52one that actually looks quite decent
- 6:54when you first see it. Just give it one
- 6:57season, maybe even two seasons. Faux fur
- 7:00has that tendency to trap dirt and dust
- 7:02and oil. And especially in high friction
- 7:05areas like when you sit down, so like on
- 7:08the back or the bum or under the armpits
- 7:10where you're rubbing against the
- 7:12material, it's going to get really dirty
- 7:15and like matted. The fur is going to
- 7:18clump up and it's just not going to look
- 7:21good. No amount of brushing is going to
- 7:24help that coat. It's one of those pieces
- 7:26that loses its appeal really, really
- 7:29quickly. And once it looks worn out,
- 7:31there's not much you can do to save it.
- 7:33So, just be wary of all the faux fur
- 7:36that we are going to start seeing this
- 7:38autumn winter. If you want a coat that
- 7:41has that texture and warmth, I'd
- 7:43recommend going for something made of
- 7:46wool in the style of like a teddy coat
- 7:49or even vintage or recycled sheerling if
- 7:52that is something that aligns with your
- 7:54values. These materials age better.
- 7:57They're easier to clean and they will
- 8:00actually keep you warm. pieces that
- 8:02evoke a strong energy. So, that was a
- 8:06very specific title that I put, but let
- 8:09me explain what I mean. I have this
- 8:11leather jacket from the Koopils that
- 8:13I've had for over 10 years now. It is
- 8:17this like motorcycle style piece and I
- 8:22absolutely loved it. I wore it
- 8:24everywhere. Absolutely everywhere in my
- 8:26early 20ies. I took it on holiday.
- 8:28Honestly, I wore it everywhere. It made
- 8:30me feel really cool and confident and
- 8:33maybe even, you know, a little bit
- 8:35tougher than I actually was. It was
- 8:38almost like a safety blanket jacket for
- 8:40me. It was like a shield. And even now
- 8:42when I look at it, I still feel that
- 8:45attachment. But at the same time, I also
- 8:49haven't worn this piece in years. It's
- 8:52covered in, you know, the zips and the
- 8:54buckles and all the hardware. And whilst
- 8:58at one time in my life that felt cool,
- 9:01now for my style, it just feels like a
- 9:04little bit too much, every time I put it
- 9:06on and I try to style it, it just adds
- 9:10such a strong energy to my outfit. It
- 9:13instantly makes everything look really
- 9:15edgy, even if that's not the vibe that
- 9:18I'm going for. And the thing is with
- 9:19this jacket is I feel like I I've tried
- 9:22to tone it down, but I can't because
- 9:24it's so loud in its energy. that is what
- 9:27dominates my overall outfit and it just
- 9:29doesn't adapt easily to the rest of my
- 9:32wardrobe anymore. And that's not to say
- 9:33I regret buying it and I wish I never
- 9:36bought it. It was just such a piece of
- 9:38its time and I had the best time wearing
- 9:41it and it definitely represented who I
- 9:44was when I first got it. But I think the
- 9:46learning here is to ask yourself when
- 9:48something evokes such a strong energy,
- 9:52is this something that is going to serve
- 9:54me in the long run? It kind of reminds
- 9:56me of those Miumu motorcycle boots that
- 9:59were trending. Or maybe they still are
- 10:01trending. I'm not sure, but they're like
- 10:03those kneeh high boots that have all
- 10:04those buckles on them. Yeah, they might
- 10:07look cool, but I think they are so of
- 10:10its time because of all of the buckles
- 10:12on them that I just don't think it is a
- 10:15trend that is going to last. These days,
- 10:18I think a leather jacket with simpler
- 10:20lines and less hardware would work
- 10:22better for my wardrobe. something that
- 10:24still brings a little bit of edge and
- 10:27structure, but is slightly more
- 10:29adaptable. Style doesn't have to be
- 10:32black and white. If you truly love
- 10:34something that is really loud and
- 10:36extravagant, then I'm not going to say
- 10:39no to you buying it. But I think that
- 10:41being mindful about longevity can save
- 10:45us a lot of decluttering and save us
- 10:47asking why don't I wear this anymore
- 10:50later on. A cropped trench coat. So, in
- 10:53all honesty, I just don't think a
- 10:56cropped trench is ever going to look as
- 10:58good as a long one. I keep seeing them
- 11:01pop up everywhere because I think they
- 11:03are, you know, a popular trend at the
- 11:05moment, but whenever I see one, I just
- 11:07think it looks awkward. I even tried one
- 11:10myself. I bought the cropped trench from
- 11:13Suzanne and I talked a little bit about
- 11:16it on here and I just felt like it
- 11:19looked off. With a cropped trench, I
- 11:21just feel like the proportions are off.
- 11:23The styling is not quite right. And I
- 11:27think you have to work extra hard for it
- 11:30to look elegant. I personally feel a
- 11:33trench coat, you know, a classic long
- 11:35trench coat adds a quiet drama to your
- 11:38outfits. They add elegance and structure
- 11:41and they give you that long, clean line
- 11:44that makes any outfit look good and put
- 11:47together. Whereas a cropped version just
- 11:50cuts everything short. They can hit at a
- 11:52really unflattering spot, especially if
- 11:55you are petite, such as myself. So maybe
- 11:57this has some sort of bias towards that.
- 11:59But I just think a short trench will
- 12:01never trump a long one. If I'm going to
- 12:04invest in outerwear, I want something
- 12:06that is timeless and practical and
- 12:08flattering. And a classic longline
- 12:12trench just ticks all those boxes for
- 12:14me. Polyester blouses are one of those
- 12:16items that look like it could be a good
- 12:20idea until you actually go about your
- 12:22life wearing one. They are absolutely
- 12:25everywhere on the high street. They're
- 12:27very soft looking and they're drapey and
- 12:30they come in so many different colors
- 12:31and patterns that you are probably going
- 12:35to find one that you really like the
- 12:37look of. But again, the moment you wear
- 12:39one, you realize that you are just
- 12:42trapping heat because polyester is
- 12:45plastic. I think you can get away with
- 12:48polyester blend knitwear or polyester
- 12:52blend coats as long as the natural fiber
- 12:55is the highest content. But with a
- 12:57polyester blouse, this is something that
- 12:59you are wearing directly against your
- 13:01skin. And so that is going to make you
- 13:04feel the most uncomfortable. Poor
- 13:06quality polyester is also going to make
- 13:07you feel not just sweaty but also
- 13:10staticky at the same time. If you love
- 13:12the look and feel of a lightweight
- 13:14blouse, I would go for tensil or silk
- 13:18instead. You'll get that same elegant
- 13:19drape except it will actually feel good
- 13:22to wear and it will last longer as well.
- 13:25You know those jackets that have a
- 13:28really low neckline, like the ones that
- 13:31kind of sit under your collar bone. The
- 13:34moment you try to layer anything
- 13:36underneath, it just looks so awkward.
- 13:40You can't wear a standard t-shirt with
- 13:41it or a high- neck jumper because it
- 13:44just will stick out in all the wrong
- 13:47places. So then suddenly you are limited
- 13:49to only wearing like a low cut tank top
- 13:53or maybe a low cut blouse. And again,
- 13:56this just limits so many options of how
- 13:59you can wear something. I have had
- 14:01jackets like this in the past and I just
- 14:04find that because it's so fussy to try
- 14:06and find something to wear underneath, I
- 14:08just never ever wore it at all. A good
- 14:10autumn jacket needs to be easy to layer
- 14:13with. I feel like this is a recurring
- 14:15theme in this video, but it needs to be
- 14:18easy to wear things underneath. It needs
- 14:20to be versatile so that you can wear it
- 14:22with a lot of different things in your
- 14:24wardrobe. And a low cut colorless jacket
- 14:27just is not it for me. patterns that
- 14:30just don't suit you. Whenever autumn
- 14:33rolls around, all these very classic
- 14:35prints come out to play. Things like
- 14:38plaid and herring bone and hounds tooth
- 14:40and animal print. Autumn is the time
- 14:43when patterns truly thrive. But you know
- 14:46what pattern I always feel like is a
- 14:49good idea because I see it everywhere,
- 14:51but it just doesn't suit me. A stripe.
- 14:54We get told all the time that a striped
- 14:57jumper is a classic piece, but
- 15:00personally for my style, I never feel
- 15:03good in a striped jumper. And it's just
- 15:06not something that I ever reach for when
- 15:09it's in my wardrobe. And to be honest, I
- 15:11can't even pinpoint exactly why that is.
- 15:15Whether that's because it leans too
- 15:18classic or it feels too nautical. I'm
- 15:22still not entirely sure what it is. It's
- 15:25actually just a feeling I get whenever I
- 15:27put on a stripe jumper. I'm like, this
- 15:29is just isn't me. But the amount of
- 15:31stripe jumpers that I've bought in the
- 15:33past, I really just need to let go of
- 15:35the idea that it might suit me now. I've
- 15:37learned my lesson. And it might not even
- 15:39be a stripe for you. Maybe it's a
- 15:42leopard print. This is another one that
- 15:44comes around year after year. And maybe
- 15:46you've tried it time and time again, but
- 15:49it just doesn't work out for you and you
- 15:51keep finding yourself decluttering this
- 15:53print. Maybe it's time to let it go like
- 15:56I am finally letting stripes go. I hope
- 15:59you found this video helpful. If you
- 16:01did, please give it a like and let me
- 16:03know in the comments what is one thing
- 16:05you've bought and instantly regretted.
- 16:08But if you do want to have a sneak peek
- 16:10into my autumn wish list and see what
- 16:12I'm planning to buy this autumn, then I
- 16:15will leave that linked somewhere on
- 16:17screen and you can watch that next. As
- 16:19always, thank you so much for watching
- 16:21and I will see you in the next video.
- 16:23Bye.
