9 Signs You Have Truly Completed a Cycle — and 4 That Only Look Like It — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00In 1677,
- 0:01a printer in La Rochelle published a
- 0:03book with almost no words in it.
- 0:07It was called Mutus Liber, the silent
- 0:09book. 15 engraved plates, a title, a few
- 0:13lines of Latin, and an author who signed
- 0:15himself only as Altus.
- 0:18The first plate shows a man asleep on a
- 0:20rock at the foot of a ladder. Angels are
- 0:23climbing it, and two of them are blowing
- 0:25trumpets at his head, trying to wake
- 0:27him.
- 0:28Then the work begins. A man and a woman
- 0:31working side by side. They leave cloths
- 0:34out overnight to catch the dew, and in
- 0:36the morning they ring them out into a
- 0:38basin. They distill what they have
- 0:40gathered, heat it, seal it, open it, and
- 0:43pour it from one vessel into another.
- 0:46And then, a few plates later, they do it
- 0:49again.
- 0:50The same exposure, the same vessels, the
- 0:53same gestures. A reader turning the
- 0:55pages for the first time keeps thinking
- 0:58they have accidentally gone back. They
- 1:00have not. The book repeats itself on
- 1:02purpose because the work does. One of
- 1:05the late plates is, quite literally, a
- 1:08multiplication.
- 1:10On the last plate, the ladder is lying
- 1:12flat on the ground. It is no longer
- 1:14needed. A sun shines at the top of the
- 1:16page. A figure is lifted up by two
- 1:19angels and crowned with a wreath. And on
- 1:22the ground below lies Hercules with his
- 1:24club, the hero whose labors are over.
- 1:27The commentators read the lifted figure
- 1:29as the sleeper of the first plate awake.
- 1:32The man and the woman kneel on either
- 1:34side, holding up two scrolls, and on
- 1:37both of them, the same two words.
- 1:40Oculatus abis.
- 1:43You leave with your eyes open.
- 1:45Not, you have arrived. Not, the work is
- 1:49finished. You leave seeing. A dozen
- 1:51plates of the same labor repeated, and
- 1:54the reward at the end is not a treasure.
- 1:57It is sight.
- 1:58The book has no text to explain any of
- 2:01this. It was designed so that the only
- 2:03way to understand it was to go through
- 2:05it.
- 2:06This is the last episode of this series,
- 2:09and it does what the tradition did at
- 2:10the end of every stage. It sets out the
- 2:13marks. Nine signs that a cycle of the
- 2:15work has completed, and then the four
- 2:18conditions that imitate completion
- 2:20closely enough to be mistaken for it,
- 2:23which is where the real value of a list
- 2:25like this has always been.
- 2:28One thing before the list, and it
- 2:30governs everything in it.
- 2:32A cycle, not the cycle.
- 2:35The alchemists were explicit about this,
- 2:38and almost everyone who borrows their
- 2:40language forgets it. The stone, once
- 2:42made, is not the end of the process. It
- 2:45can be multiplied.
- 2:47In 1471,
- 2:49an English canon named George Ripley
- 2:51wrote a long poem called The Compound of
- 2:53Alchemy, and dedicated it to King Edward
- 2:56IV. He laid the work out as a castle
- 2:59with 12 gates, one operation behind
- 3:01each. Calcination is the first gate. The
- 3:0511th is multiplication, and the 12th is
- 3:08projection.
- 3:09Multiplication means that the finished
- 3:12stone is taken back into the work. It is
- 3:14dissolved again, and fixed again, and
- 3:17each time it comes out stronger, more
- 3:19potent, able to transmute more base
- 3:22metal with less of itself. And nothing
- 3:24in Ripley, or anywhere else in the
- 3:26corpus, describes the last pass. There
- 3:29is no final turn of the wheel. The
- 3:31operations go round.
- 3:34That is why the oldest image of the
- 3:35whole art is a serpent eating its own
- 3:38tail. In a Greek manuscript known as the
- 3:41Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra, the ouroboros
- 3:43is drawn in a ring, and inside it are
- 3:46three words. The all is one. The end of
- 3:49the circle is the beginning of the
- 3:51circle.
- 3:53So, the nine signs that follow are not
- 3:55signs that you have arrived. They are
- 3:57signs that one turn has closed.
- 4:00That is a different thing to know, and a
- 4:01much more useful one. A person who
- 4:04believes they have arrived stops paying
- 4:05attention. A person who knows a turn has
- 4:08closed knows roughly what comes next and
- 4:10is not ambushed by it.
- 4:13It also changes what the signs are for.
- 4:15They are not a certificate. Nobody gives
- 4:17you one. They are closer to the marks a
- 4:20sailor uses to know that a stretch of
- 4:22coast is behind them, not proof of
- 4:24anything, just a reliable way of knowing
- 4:27where you are.
- 4:29If you have watched this whole series,
- 4:30you have the stages. The written work
- 4:33has the whole map underneath them, the
- 4:35four stages and the 12 operations with
- 4:38the primary sources under each. The
- 4:40hermeticschool.org/stone,
- 4:42link in the description.
- 4:46Sign one. The story has stopped
- 4:48changing.
- 4:49For most of a process, your account of
- 4:51what happened to you keeps revising
- 4:53itself. The divorce, the illness, the
- 4:56collapse of the thing you had built.
- 4:58Every few months there is a new
- 5:00interpretation, a deeper cause, a better
- 5:03frame. It was your father. It was the
- 5:05culture. It was a lesson. It was a test.
- 5:09When a cycle completes, that stops.
- 5:13You can tell what happened plainly the
- 5:15same way twice, a year apart, and there
- 5:18is no pull to improve it. Someone asks
- 5:21at a dinner, and you answer in two
- 5:23sentences, and the two sentences are
- 5:25true, and you do not feel the need to
- 5:27add the third one that makes it mean
- 5:29something.
- 5:30The story has not become unimportant. It
- 5:33has become finished. A finished thing
- 5:35does not need editing.
- 5:37Sign two. You have stopped rehearsing
- 5:39it.
- 5:40We took this up in the episode on the
- 5:42yellow dawn. While a truth is still
- 5:44being installed, you go over it. You
- 5:47remind yourself of it in the shower. You
- 5:49look for confirmations in what you read.
- 5:51You explain it to people who did not
- 5:53ask.
- 5:54When it has landed, the rehearsal stops
- 5:57because perceptions do not need
- 5:59maintenance. You do not remind yourself
- 6:01every morning that the stove is hot.
- 6:04Which leads to something slightly
- 6:06uncomfortable. The material you have
- 6:08genuinely integrated is usually the
- 6:10material you never mention. If there is
- 6:13a lesson you bring up every week, that
- 6:15is a sign it is still being learned.
- 6:18Sign three. You notice during, not
- 6:21afterwards.
- 6:22This is the most checkable sign on the
- 6:24list and the one most worth checking.
- 6:27For a long time, a pattern can only be
- 6:30seen in reconstruction. You snap at
- 6:33someone you love and an hour later, in
- 6:35the car, you see exactly what happened.
- 6:38The tiredness, the old wound, the tone
- 6:41that set it off. Understanding arrives
- 6:43afterwards, every time.
- 6:46At the end of a cycle, the pattern
- 6:47becomes visible while it is running. You
- 6:50are halfway through the sentence and you
- 6:52can see the sentence. That is the shift
- 6:54from understanding to sight, the one the
- 6:57Citronella's was about.
- 6:59It does not require that you stop the
- 7:01behavior. Often you do not. It only
- 7:03requires that the behavior has stopped
- 7:05being invisible to you while it happens.
- 7:08Everything else grows out of that.
- 7:11Sign four. Something in your actual week
- 7:13is different.
- 7:15Your calendar, your money, your sleep,
- 7:18who you call back and who you no longer
- 7:20call back. Things that could be observed
- 7:22by someone who knows nothing about your
- 7:24interior life.
- 7:26This is coagulatio and it is the sign
- 7:29that keeps all the others honest.
- 7:31Without it, the other eight describe a
- 7:33very sophisticated inner experience
- 7:35rather than a completed operation. The
- 7:38alchemist did not consider a substance
- 7:40made until it could be held in the hand.
- 7:42A change that exists only in the way you
- 7:45think about your life has not yet been
- 7:47fixed.
- 7:48Sign five. Old triggers fire smaller and
- 7:51you find out in retrospect.
- 7:54The thing that used to take three days
- 7:56to recover from takes an afternoon. The
- 7:58message from that one person still
- 8:00lands, but it lands in the room instead
- 8:03of in the foundations.
- 8:05And you do not notice at the time. That
- 8:07is the strange part. You notice months
- 8:09later looking back at a week that would
- 8:12once have flattened you and realizing
- 8:14with mild surprise that it did not.
- 8:16Improvements in this work are almost
- 8:18always seen in the rearview mirror. If
- 8:21you are watching for them as they
- 8:23happen, you will mostly see the old
- 8:25reactions because watching for them is
- 8:27itself a kind of rehearsal.
- 8:30Sign six, you can hold two things that
- 8:33contradict.
- 8:34The ambition and the wish to be left
- 8:36alone. The love for someone and the
- 8:39resentment of them. The gratitude toward
- 8:41a parent and the clear sight of what
- 8:43they did. Held at full strength, both of
- 8:46them, without a formula that dissolves
- 8:48the tension.
- 8:50This is the cony young show, the
- 8:52marriage of what you refuse to join. And
- 8:54it has a counterfeit that is worth
- 8:56knowing. If you have a tidy resolution,
- 8:58check it. A premature synthesis brings
- 9:01relief, immediate and complete. The
- 9:04contradiction is gone and you feel
- 9:06lighter. The real thing does not feel
- 9:08like that. It feels like widening. You
- 9:10become large enough for both and neither
- 9:13of them goes away.
- 9:15Sign seven, you can be wrong without it
- 9:17costing you anything structural.
- 9:20Not that you enjoy being wrong. Nobody
- 9:22does. But being wrong has become an
- 9:25event rather than a threat. You can say
- 9:27in front of someone, I had that wrong
- 9:30and the floor does not move.
- 9:32This is the sign that distinguishes a
- 9:34completed cycle from the inflation we
- 9:36examined in the third arc. Inflation
- 9:39feels a great deal like completion from
- 9:41the inside. But in an inflated state,
- 9:44the ordinary conditions of being wrong
- 9:46quietly stop applying. Disagreement
- 9:49becomes a sign of the other person's
- 9:51level. Mistakes become teachings. Sign
- 9:54seven is the one inflation cannot fake.
- 9:57Sign eight, you can be around people who
- 10:00have no idea without contempt and
- 10:02without performance.
- 10:04Both have matter.
- 10:07No quiet superiority. No inward sigh at
- 10:10the colleague who has never heard of any
- 10:12of this. No private sense of being
- 10:14further along. And no performance
- 10:17either. No managing how you come across.
- 10:20No carefully casual mention of the work.
- 10:22No dimming yourself so as not to seem
- 10:25different.
- 10:26This is the return, the subject of the
- 10:29episode called never return the way you
- 10:31came. And it is the sign most likely to
- 10:33be missing in people who have everything
- 10:35else on this list. A great deal of real
- 10:38inner work gets stuck exactly here. In a
- 10:41person who has seen a great deal and can
- 10:44no longer sit comfortably at an ordinary
- 10:46table.
- 10:47Sign nine. You want something again and
- 10:50can also survive losing it.
- 10:53For a long stretch of this process,
- 10:55wanting goes quiet. In the nigredo it
- 10:57collapses. In the albedo it is washed
- 11:00out. People in those stages often say
- 11:03they do not know what they want anymore
- 11:05and they are telling the truth.
- 11:07At the end of a cycle, wanting comes
- 11:09back. A project, a person, a place, a
- 11:13piece of work you want to do well. The
- 11:15wanting is real and it costs something.
- 11:18You can be hurt by not getting it.
- 11:21And it is not load-bearing for your
- 11:22existence. If it goes, you go on.
- 11:26That combination, real desire without
- 11:28dependence, is the whole of the fourth
- 11:31stage. It is the red of the rubedo, the
- 11:34blood coming back into the figure. And
- 11:36it is the last thing to arrive.
- 11:40Now the four conditions that imitate
- 11:42completion.
- 11:43They matter more than the signs because
- 11:46nobody is ever confused by an obvious
- 11:48crisis. People are confused by states
- 11:51that feel finished and are not. Each of
- 11:54these can produce several of the nine
- 11:55signs at once. Each of them can last
- 11:58years.
- 11:59The first is resignation.
- 12:02Burnout in its late phase produces a
- 12:05calm that can pass for completion. The
- 12:07reactivity goes. The striving goes. The
- 12:10person stops arguing, stops hoping,
- 12:13stops being disappointed. From the
- 12:15outside, and for a while from the
- 12:17inside, it can look like peace.
- 12:21The distinguishing mark, as we said in
- 12:23the second arc, is contempt. A low,
- 12:26steady bitterness toward the work,
- 12:28toward the people, toward the whole
- 12:30enterprise of trying. Listen to how you
- 12:32talk about the things you used to care
- 12:34about. If there is a small sneer in it,
- 12:37even a gentle one, that is the mark.
- 12:40A completed cycle has no contempt in it.
- 12:43If your peace has an edge, it is
- 12:45exhaustion that has curdled.
- 12:47The second is inflation.
- 12:50Jung gave it a name, the mana
- 12:52personality. It happens when a person
- 12:54has made real contact with something
- 12:56large in the psyche, and then quietly
- 12:59identifies with it. Instead of having
- 13:01met the self, they become, in their own
- 13:04estimation, its representative.
- 13:07Everything feels clear. Disagreement
- 13:09reads as the other person's level, and
- 13:12there is a strong pull to teach, to
- 13:14explain the work to people, to correct
- 13:16them, to gather an audience.
- 13:19The tell is the absence of sign seven.
- 13:22So, check it directly. When were you
- 13:24last genuinely, straightforwardly wrong
- 13:26about something in front of someone, and
- 13:29how did that feel? If you cannot
- 13:30remember, or if the memory has been
- 13:33reframed into something you were
- 13:34secretly right about, that is worth
- 13:37sitting with.
- 13:38The third is premature peace.
- 13:41This one is the hardest to see, because
- 13:44it is made of real effort and often of
- 13:46real practice. It is equanimity that was
- 13:49achieved rather than arrived at.
- 13:52There are three tells.
- 13:54It was worked for, and you can name the
- 13:56practice that produced it. The real
- 13:58thing is usually a byproduct, and people
- 14:01are oddly vague about where it came
- 14:03from.
- 14:04It is defended. Something tightens when
- 14:06it is questioned. If someone suggests
- 14:09your calm is a performance, and you feel
- 14:11a flash of heat, the calm has a guard
- 14:14posted at the door.
- 14:16And it is articulate. It arrives with
- 14:18fluent vocabulary, ready to describe
- 14:20itself. A completed cycle is notably
- 14:23inarticulate about itself. Ask someone
- 14:26who has really calmed through one what
- 14:28changed, and they will often struggle
- 14:30and shrug and say something
- 14:32unimpressive.
- 14:34The fourth is simply having aged.
- 14:36This one is rarely named, and it is
- 14:39common.
- 14:40Between about 35 and 50, many people
- 14:43become calmer, less reactive, less
- 14:46interested in other people's opinions,
- 14:48and less driven by the need to prove
- 14:50anything. Through nothing but time,
- 14:53fatigue, and lower stakes, the body has
- 14:56less fuel for drama. The career is
- 14:58roughly where it will be. The parents
- 15:00are old, and the old fights have lost
- 15:02their point.
- 15:04It resembles the list above very
- 15:06closely, and it is not the same thing.
- 15:09The difference is sign four and sign
- 15:11nine.
- 15:13Aging produces reduced reactivity. It
- 15:15does not reliably produce a changed
- 15:17week. The calendar is the same calendar.
- 15:20The money goes to the same places. The
- 15:23same calls go on returned. And it does
- 15:25not bring back wanting. It usually does
- 15:28the opposite. Desire thins, and the
- 15:30thinning feels like wisdom.
- 15:33So, if your calm arrived without
- 15:35anything in your life changing, and
- 15:37without desire coming back, it is worth
- 15:40asking honestly whether time has been
- 15:42doing the work rather than the work.
- 15:45None of this is a reason for alarm.
- 15:47Resignation, inflation, premature peace,
- 15:50and aging are not failures. They are
- 15:53places where the process paused. Each of
- 15:55them can be the beginning of the next
- 15:57turn, once it is seen for what it is.
- 16:01And the medical line, for the last time
- 16:03in this series, if your functioning is
- 16:05impaired, if you are not sleeping, if
- 16:07you feel unreal or outside yourself, or
- 16:10if there is any thought of harming
- 16:12yourself, none of this applies, and a
- 16:14clinician does. The map has no authority
- 16:17over a medical condition and it never
- 16:19claimed any.
- 16:22So, what happens after a cycle closes?
- 16:25Another one opens, usually within a year
- 16:28or two, and usually on material that was
- 16:30not reachable before.
- 16:33That is the hardest thing in this
- 16:34tradition and the most honest. A
- 16:37collapse at 45 is not evidence that the
- 16:39work at 30 failed. It is the next
- 16:41circuit on a layer that only became
- 16:44accessible because the first one ran.
- 16:47The nigredo comes back and it is not the
- 16:49same nigredo because the person it comes
- 16:51back to is not the same person.
- 16:54Jung arrived at this in his own life and
- 16:57described it in his memoirs. For years
- 16:59he had believed that psychological
- 17:01development moved toward a goal in a
- 17:03line and that there would be a point
- 17:05where it was done. During the long, hard
- 17:08period after his break with Freud,
- 17:10drawing circular images in a notebook
- 17:12every morning, he came to a different
- 17:14conclusion.
- 17:16"There is no linear evolution," he
- 17:18wrote. "There is only a circumambulation
- 17:21of the self."
- 17:22Walking around a center, coming back
- 17:25past the same places each time from a
- 17:27slightly different angle, each time a
- 17:29little closer in.
- 17:31Which means the correct expectation of
- 17:33this work is not completion. It is
- 17:36competence. Becoming the kind of
- 17:38operator who recognizes the stage they
- 17:40are in, knows what it asks of them, and
- 17:43does not mistake the blackening for a
- 17:45personal failure when it comes round
- 17:46again.
- 17:48That is what these 24 episodes were for,
- 17:51not to get anyone to the end, to make
- 17:53the next turn recognizable.
- 17:57Go back to the silent book.
- 17:59A dozen plates of the same labor. Gather
- 18:01the dew, wring it out, distill it, seal
- 18:04it, open it, pour it, and begin again.
- 18:08If you were the man in those engravings
- 18:10at any point in the middle of the book,
- 18:12it would be very hard to say whether you
- 18:14were making progress. Every plate looks
- 18:16like the one before.
- 18:18And in the last plate, the ladder that
- 18:20the sleeper needed at the beginning is
- 18:23lying on the ground. The hero of the
- 18:25labors lies on the ground, finished. And
- 18:28the one who was asleep is awake, and the
- 18:30scrolls say, you leave with your eyes
- 18:33open.
- 18:34The labors ended. The seeing did not.
- 18:37That is what a closed cycle leaves you
- 18:38with.
- 18:4024 episodes ago, this series started in
- 18:42the dark with a structure that had
- 18:44stopped working and no name for what was
- 18:47happening. If you have been here since
- 18:49then, thank you. Genuinely. This
- 18:51channel's monetization ended partway
- 18:53through this series, and it continued
- 18:55because people watched it and bought the
- 18:58written work. That is the only reason it
- 19:00exists in this form.
- 19:02The whole series is in one playlist, in
- 19:05order, and it is designed to be walked
- 19:07rather than browsed. If someone you know
- 19:10is in the first stage right now, send
- 19:12them the first episode, not this one.
- 19:15And one last thing for those of you
- 19:17still here. This is the last time I will
- 19:19say it in this series.
- 19:21Everything these 24 episodes walked from
- 19:24the outside is written out underneath in
- 19:26full. The complete library, all eight
- 19:29books, the four stages, the 12
- 19:32operations, the laws, the practice, and
- 19:35the primary sources under every one of
- 19:37them. It is the entire architecture for
- 19:40a fraction of the cost of the books
- 19:42separately. It is at the
- 19:43hermeticschool.org/stone.
- 19:47If this series was useful to you, that
